Today, The Two Mikes spoke with the prominent economist, historian, sociologist, and author Dr. Rainer Zitelmann about his fine new book Unbreakable Spirit: Rising Above All Odds. Dr. Zitelmann said his book is about physically disabled individuals who refuse to adopt the persona and soothing-but false excuses of victimhood –sexism, racism, feminism, capitalism -- and instead seek to take advantage of the initiative to use their powers to not only survive, but to thrive. Dr. Zitelmann discusses the achievements of 20 unique individuals – including the blind Saliya Kahawatte who climbed the seven highest mountains on the seven continents, Beethoven, who composed the 9th Symphony when nearly deaf, and the extraordinary success of singer Ray Charles in rising from a ruined life to preeminence ins his field— who provided all of us the lesson that what makes a person great is his or her ability to transform weaknesses into strengths and overcome limitations.

Zitelmann studied history and political sciences, graduating with a doctorate “summa cum laude” in 1986. His dissertation was published in both German and English: Hitler. The Policies of Seduction. Rainer Zitelmann began his career lecturing history at the Freie Universität Berlin from 1987 to 1992. He then became chief editor at one of the leading and most prestigious publishing houses in Germany, Ullstein-Propyläen. He followed this with the role of section editor at the major German daily newspaper “Die Welt”, which he held until 2000. In the year 2000, Rainer Zitelmann, Ph.D. founded a company, Dr. ZitelmannPB. GmbH. He ran the company from 2000 to 2016, establishing it as by far the leading PR consultancy for the German real estate industry. He sold the business in 2016. Zitelmann built his wealth through his entrepreneurial activities and as a successful real estate investor. In 2016, Zitelmann was awarded his second doctorate, this time in sociology, with his thesis on the psychology of the super-rich. Today, The Two Mikes spoke with the renowned German author and economist Rainer Zitelmann about the troubled western economies, including that of the United States. Dr. Zitelmann said he had come to defend capitalism and to warn of the dangers that it currently faces. He said that in Europe and the United States capitalism is now seen as serious problem that needs to fixed – with a socialist remedy -- rather than as the reliable regime of growth and ever broader prosperity that it always has been. It almost seems, Dr. Zitelmann said, that few recall the economic “accomplishments” socialism. At the time of the USSR's collapse, for example, East Germans wanting to buy a car had to wait 12.5 to 17 years for its delivery, and then the car they received was all but worn out. At the same point in time only 27- percent of East Germans lived in a place where toilet facilities were not shared, and only 16-percent of East Germans had their own telephones. A refreshed Reaganite world economy would create societies where individuals could again become masters of their own fate and not just exist as self-pitying victims. In such a scenario, consumer choice we again be a dominating power and planned economies would receive the scuppering they merit. As an example of the process, Dr. Zitelmann said that he just returned from giving a seminar in Vietnam, where he found it was harder to find a Marxist that it was in the United States our Europe. In 1986, he was awarded the title doctorate Summa cum laude. He then went on to lecture history at the Free University of Berlin from 1987 to 1992, before becoming editor-in-chief at one of the leading and most prestigious publishing houses in Germany, Ullstein-Propyläen. He followed this by taking up the role of section editor at the major German daily newspaper Die Welt, a position he held until 2000, when he embarked on a career as an entrepreneur. He set up the public relations consultancy Dr. ZitelmannPB. GmbH, which he quickly established as by far the leading PR consultancy for the German real estate industry. He sold the business in 2016. Zitelmann built his wealth through his entrepreneurial activities and as a successful real estate investor. In 2016, Zitelmann was awarded his second doctorate, this time in sociology, with his thesis on the psychology of the super-rich under the mentorship of Professor Wolfgang Lauterbach at the University of Potsdam. The study has been published in the United States, the UK, China, and South Korea as The Wealth Elite.  Zitelmann has written a total of 25 books, which have enjoyed substantial success in a range of languages around the world. For example, his book Dare to be Different and Grow Rich has been published in 12 different languages alone. He is a popular guest speaker at events in Asia, the United States and across Europe.
