Kool & The Gang's Robert 'Kool' Bell on 60 years of creating hits

Formed as a jazz ensemble in the mid-'60s, Kool & the Gang became one of the most inspired and influential funk units during the '70s, and one of the most popular R&B groups of the '80s after their breakout hit "Celebration." Just as funky as James Brown or Parliament (and sampled almost as frequently), Kool & the Gang relied on their jazz backgrounds and long friendship to form a tightly knit group.  Their 21 Top 40 hits display a huge range, from the tough funk of "Jungle Boogie," to the smooth instrumental soul of "Summer Madness," to the lively pop of "Joanna." They hit the Top Ten of the R&B chart with several albums that include the gold Wild and Peaceful in 1973, the all platinum Ladies' Night in 79, Celebrate in 80, Something Special in 81 and Emergency in 84.   Since the '90s, Kool & The Gang have focused most on touring, but they've released several original albums during this time too - the latest of which is People Just Wanna Have Fun in 2023. Our guest today is ROBERT 'KOOL' BELL who with his brother Ronald, founded the group. The boys grew up in Jersey City and picked up the music bug from their father, who was a professional boxer. The duo formed the Jazziacs in 1964 with several neighbourhood friends: they soon renamed themselves the Soul Town Band and began playing clubs in Greenwich Village. After a mix-up with a club owner resulted in the group being billed Kool & the Flames, (and in order to not offend James Brown) they changed their name to Kool & the Gang and quickly became a success on the R&B charts. It was with their 6th album, Wild and Peaceful that Kool & the Gang hit the big time. "Funky Stuff" became their first Top 40 hit at the end of 1973. Then both "Jungle Boogie" and "Hollywood Swinging" reached the Top Ten. Over the next four years, Kool & the Gang delivered a Grammy-nominated recording and scored several Top 40 hits. Their hit "Open Sesame appeared on the Grammy-winning film soundtrack Saturday Night Fever.  However, after this, the rise of disco stalled their popularity. In 1979, the group added two new vocalists, Earl Toon Jr and former Jersey nightclub singer James J.T Taylor. Kool & the Gang also began working with Brazilian jazz fusion arranger/producer Eumir Deodato who produced them from 1979 to 1982. Their first album together, Ladies Night  was their biggest hit yet, the first of three consecutive platinum albums, with the Top Ten singles "Too Hot" and the title track. Celebrate was released in 1979 and spawned Kool & the Gang's only number one hit, "Celebration," an anthem favoured by thousands at ball games, wedding receptions and even astronauts in space. The group produced several more hits, including the single "Get Down on It." Between 1983 and 1985, the band had a pair of number two hits with "Joanna" and "Cherish.” Kool & The Gang remained a going concern throughout the 2000s, teaming up with many younger artists. Fellow co-founders Ronald Bell and Dennis D.T Thomas both passed away in 2020 and 2021, respectively. The album "Perfect Union" was completed with both musicians and was released during the latter year. It was promoted with extensive touring, including performances in 2022 with the German Philharmonic Orchestra. Just ahead of their 60thanniversary, Kool & the Gang quickly returned in 2023 with the album "People Just Wanna Have Fun" led by the single "Let's Party." Kool & The Gang remain the most sampled group in the world. Their longevity is a testament to their talents and Robert ‘Kool' Bell fills us in on all the ins and outs of their journey this week. For more information about Kool & The Gang head for their website https://www.koolandthegang.com/ Please feel free to send me your comments, feedback or any suggestions for future interviews you'd like to hear. An Application of the Prophetic Challenge with the Present

Prophecy fulfilled is history, and understanding it is a matter of study.  Prophecy future is expectation, and understanding it is a matter of judgment.  Prophecy unfolding is a matter of discernment.  And that, is the prophetic challenge, and its likeness to history in general. We can discuss what has happened, and no one can say we are wrong because it has happened.  We can discuss what may happen, and no one can prove us wrong  because it has not yet happened.   The challenge comes when we try to specify with certainty that prophecy is happening in the present - now, around us, in front of us, and to us.  It is a challenge to prove or disprove with absolute certainty. And yet, prophecy to be fulfilled must happen, and happen in real time.  Sometimes it happens in a moment, sometimes longer, and sometimes over vast stretches of time, but it does happen, and happens in real time.  The challenge is to see it, understand it, and deal with it. - Dennis D. It has been said that “An education cannot make the most of a person, but a person can make the most of an education.” Some of the greatest men in the modern history of Christian ministry were without any formal theological training. Such a list is too long to include here, but names many will recognize are Charles G. Finney, Dwight L. Moody, Lewis S. Chafer, and A.W. Tozer. On the other hand, the names of countless persons who have served in ministry (following graduation from well known schools), who could parse both Hebrew and Greek, explain complicated doctrinal theories, and argue apologetics with crisp reasoning, have passed though history scarcely known. - Dennis D. PRIMARY CARE DOCTORS It's a good idea to have a primary care doctor. For a lot of specialist, you'll need a referral. This is to save everyone's time and money. EDUCATING INSTEAD OF OVERMEDICATING Many doctors overmedicate. It's a symptom of not knowing much about nutrition. They aren't taught it. What Dr. Greg knows, he has taught himself. Now, he teaches his patients about good nutrition. If time was spent on teaching patients about how to lose weight and eat healthily, medications would be less necessary. Joseph and Mary could not have known what Christmas would eventually mean to history, and how it would become the one time of the year when so many around the world wanted to be home.  Nevertheless, they were certainly aware that the night when Mary’s baby was born was a night like no other – a holy night. We now take up postmodernism’s general tenants two and three: 2). Community is important, but never static, it must always evolve. 3). Reality is perception, and perception is personal not corporate. The reaction against a static community calls for the continual evolution of community. What is considered required, proper, taboo or essential by one generation must give way to more enlightened or more expedient forms of community. In other words, each person in each generation has just as much right as the community at large to determine what is acceptable. Dennis D. Frey, M.Div., Th.D., President

I was about eleven years old when we got the word that my mother, older brother, and I had finally been approved to move into the government housing project. We had been on the waiting list for a long time, and by most accounts it was a big move up. Dennis D. Frey, Th.D., President Master's International University of Divinity the.mdivs.edu

In all aspects of human life, there are certain skills that are termed “soft,” but the adjective doesn’t make this set of skills any less important than their hard counterparts. Soft skills breathe life into the work you do and the environment you create which allows you and everyone around you to truly thrive. Dennis D. Doran is a leading expert in the construction industry and the author of the highly praised book, Soft As Steel. Steve Farber talks to Dennis about why, ultimately, people in work settings should be putting rigor and focus into developing soft skills. While hard skills are still, of course, essential to performing tasks essential to the job, soft skills are the oil that keeps the whole machine moving. Hello and happy March 4th to everyone who is listening in real-time today, March 4th, 2020. If you haven’t yet decided where you want to march forth today on March 4th, I have a suggestion for you at the end of the show. But before we get into today’s topic, the greatest obstacle to our relationships, a listener from South Carolina asked if I would explain what he called “my strong reaction to the relationship quote” from last week’s show, episode 53. You may recall the quote came from Princess Diana, who said, “I don’t go by a rule book, because I lead from the heart, not the head.” [ I read SC listener response, and then my reply] 2nd person who brought this up I was thinking more about her relationship to leadership principles than interpersonal relationships Another of her quotes, “Only do what your heart tells you.” At the end of today’s show I have a relationship quote from another famous Brit that I wholeheartedly endorse, so stay tuned for that So much for last week’s show, it’s time to move on to today’s episode 54, where we will examine the greatest obstacle to experiencing the kind of relationships we were made for. Because once properly identified, we can then deal more effectively with this relational roadblock in order to experience the joy God wants for us in our relationships Introduction The apostle Paul tackles this subject in the 12th chapter of the Book of Romans in the Bible. In verse 2 he writes, “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world.” That’s how the New Living Translation of the Bible translates it. Other versions read “Do not be conformed to this world” “Do not conform to the pattern of this world” or “Do not conform to this age” Regardless of the version you go with, and they’re all quite similar, and it raises the question Exactly what are the behavior and customs, or pattern of this world in the age in which we live? The answer to this question in my mind reveals the greatest obstacle to experiencing the life-giving relationships we were all made for. Listen in and let’s discover together exactly what this formidable foe is to our relationships. I start with the premise that because the Bible was written for all people, for all cultures, for all time periods of history, we have to consider what Paul is talking about that is universal to the human condition. What’s the” behavior, pattern and customs of this world” that is true now, and was true in Paul’s day in the 1st century. And which is true in all cultures, and true of all mankind, at all stages of history. I’ve got a story that I think will shed some light on this. [Listening talk I gave at a church awhile back] At the break, a man with a USA today newspaper and an article he read on the plane Read “One Question, Why Aren’t You Asking Me Any” Questions I asked the audience: When was the last time someone asked you a question that went beyond how are you?, and that was about YOU and nothing to do with the questioner and information he or she wanted? What were you asked, and how did you react inside? Why do we ask so few questions of each other? Think of the conversations you typically have with friends in relaxed social settings. What would you guess is the percentage of time spent in those conversations that involve people asking questions of each other? I would have to go along with the columnist for USA Today, and cast my vote for “ME-ism” as the behavior and custom of the world both today and the 1st century. Self-centeredness is the biggest obstacle to healthy relationships. It affects all of us. You see it in 3 broad areas of the human experience; How poorly we listen to each other. Thread that ran through MC2 conference Pride - the source of all conflict, per Fighting for Peace by Dennis D. Morgan Lack of curiosity about other people and our relationship to the world, While “ME-ism,” our self-centeredness is a significant obstacle to our relationships, it can be overcome. We’ll talk about how to do this in next week’s episode, #55. But for now, If you forget everything else, here’s the one thing I hope you remember from today’s episode. Our show in a sentence We are far more self-centered than we realize. The more aware we become of this enemy to our relationships, and the more we take steps to battle it within us, the greater fulfillment we will find in our relationships. Here’s what you can do in response to today’s show. Ask yourself, “to what extent does ‘Me-ism’ permeate my life?” Because of the fall, it’s afflicts us all. It’s baked into the pattern and customs of all people - from all cultures since the beginning of time. And where do you see your self-centeredness rearing it’s ugly head in YOUR life? Where do you see it how you listen to people? In your pride? In the level of curiosity you have about people? And let’s march forth, starting today, March 4th, in our relationships - free of our self-centeredness. As always, feel free to let me and your fellow listeners know what resonated with you about today’s episode. You can share your thoughts in the “Leave a Reply” box at the bottom of the show notes. Or you can send them to me in an email to john@caringforothers.org. Closing I hope your thinking was stimulated by today’s show, to both reflect and to act. So that you will find the joy God intends for you through your various relationships. Because after all, You Were Made for This. Now for Our Relationship Quote of the Week Selfishness is the greatest curse of the human race. ~ William E. Gladstone (Gladstone served for 12 years as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, spread over four terms, beginning in 1868 and ending in 1894) That’s all for today. See you next week. Bye for now.

I am finishing an audiobook for Fred Dodson now called Time Travel: Through Consciousness and Advanced Technology and it is awesome! It will be out on audiobook in March, but meanwhile I wanted to pull a theme from Chapter 7 in the book that is worth the whole price! Let's talk about our "way of being" and how things show up in our life. As Fred puts it - Non-Linear Causality. 222 - Non Linear Causality Transcription [00:00:00] and welcome back to another subconscious mind mastery podcast. Thomas and Majona in the booth. Rocking and rolling in here. Welcome everyone. We really are. We were listening to, so Dennis D. Young was the lead singer of sticks back in the day. Allianz and I was playing come sail away and just rocking in this booth with sheet.[00:00:27] The acoustics are amazing. And found out that he's coming to Dallas in the summer, so we're going to check out and see. Maybe we'll go to that. We were blasting from the past and, Hey, I'm sorry I can't listen to that stuff today. Well, I'm right there with you. I don't understand it, but those of you who do, that's great.[00:00:44] I love you. And I love the love the people who make the music that brighten our lives. Even our 17 year old Brock listens to Johnny Cash.[00:00:56] I mean, now that is doing it right. Yeah. See, see these young people, there is hope for the future Majona. There's hope for them that they know they have a musical ear. They're like, this stuff today has got to change. Anyway, sorry, we degress so first of all, thank you for all your notes on the Facebook page.[00:01:15] If you guys are not on there. We both have one. Majora has life after life radio, and I have subconscious mind mastery, which kind of is subconscious mind mastery. And the other podcast that I'm doing every day called fun astrology, and that's kind of where the party is because I'm doing those every day now.[00:01:32] And just following the energy as it affects our lives. For a quick little blip that is posted at 4:00 AM central time every morning, so you can get up and as many people in the comments say, have your coffee and listen to what's going on in the, in the energetic world above. You know what I think is the coolest part of that is to go back and look in retrospect.[00:01:58] That was the energy. Okay? [00:02:00] Globally, what happened that day? Because it's amazing. If you don't see it in your own life, look globally and boom, it's there. Well, and that's a great parlay to what we're going to. Pick apart today because here's the thing. When you think about, we still see in the comments on Facebook, your page, this page and emails that we get, you're seeing that people have an amped up increased.[00:02:27] Challenge and struggle in their life. So we're seeing it in social media. You see it in the context of social gatherings, and it just seems like the whole world is kind of on edge, and now you throw this potential pandemic into things and it's like, yeah, wow. In fact, as we're recording this right now, that one of the top headlines, if you searched today's news, is the locusts that have invaded Africa.[00:02:56] Have you seen that I have not. So the locusts have, they say they're wiping out entire fields of crops in 30 seconds and people are saying, and then you throw in the Corona virus, our people are saying, is this a biblical proportion kind of plague? You know? So I think that's the global energy that people are feeling.[00:03:19] And the biggest concern I have around that is if people go to fare and panic because there's always lessons to be learned and love is stronger. So I'm in the middle of a Fred Dodson audio book, which always refreshes my soul. It's called time travel. Through consciousness and advanced technology.[00:03:39] Recently published in 2020 we're going to get the audio book out and released hopefully in March, 2020 and we're going to make a couple of references to that because it just, you know, whenever you get around Fred Dodson's material, it's just good for you. It's good for your soul, it's good for your consciousness, it's good for your energy level.[00:03:59] And then just the [00:04:00] concept of time travel. Hello, who's not curious and interested in that and is it a possibility? Yes. I think you and I time traveled the day we met, I think so many times since that to past life experiences. So listen, here's the thing, and one of the things that came up from this book is if you're in, like Fred saying, if you're going to time travel.[00:04:23] One of the things you do is you set focuses and an in intentions, and that's all in the book. We'll, get Fred on here too, and I'm sure he'll want to talk about it because he was very excited about this topic. But here's the thing, if you focus on seeing so many challenges. Then what kind of energy does that put you in seeing so many challenges?[00:04:49] Challenging energy. Absolutely. So I'm dancing between a thin line and my, I'd like your comments on this and everybody I know would have their own opinions on this. When you see trends in the news in social media, when you see email trends and you pick up on what's going on in the collective consciousness in the world where we, like when we had our Saturn Pluto get together, were about what, 15 people there, and I asked the question, how many of you have felt more adjuncts in the last about six months?[00:05:27] Every hand went up. So from the position of more so along the lines of. observation, you realize and see more people are getting re like relationships are breaking up, financial challenges, death even. And you see that on an increased basis, throw in a pandemic and locusts, you know, then are we focusing our attention on something or can we step back from [00:06:00] that and observe it.[00:06:02] And play with that energy. I think it's yes, and honestly I think that because our human experiences and we signed up to experience a huge range. That the universe gives us opportunities to experience those, right? We get opportunities to panic. We get opportunities to experience deep peace and love in either extreme.[00:06:28] And everything between your choice is how to deal with it. So when you know, everybody knows someone who can be very, very calm in a crisis situation, and there are those that panic in a crisis situation, there's choice. Which do you choose to be. Well, if you are hearing this podcast, then you have chosen to be on the earth during the Saturn Pluto conjunction, and that, as we've talked about at links on here and on the fun astrology podcast, very frequently is an energy that is still very much with us and will be with us for really most of 2020.[00:07:10] This is deal with your stuff. Bring up massive transformation into whole new realms of consciousness if you're awake and alert to it so we can observe that. We can go back in history and realize that it was under this similar kind of pattern, that the American revolution and the declaration of independence in the birth of the 13 original States that are now the 50 States of America began.[00:07:38] We can see that. Protestantism began and relief from the oppression of Catholic domination began, and the beginning of the Renaissance area era began back in the 13 hundreds so we can observe from history and know that there is, there is transformational energy at play. But here's the thing with that, those [00:08:00] are major institutional changes.[00:08:03] Where does all of that begin? Individual level, right? So everybody going through right now and personal upheaval and the dark night of the soul, all that really unpleasant stuff is your call to action. It is the universe prompting you on a very deep soul level to do some self evaluation and make changes that sweats leads to the big institutional changes.[00:08:30] Absolutely. I mean, it was those, those . People with an accent who called themselves Americans back in the day. I don't know what you'd be talking to them, right. Those people felt the call for independence. It was one little, rebel monk, Martin Luther who said, we doing it this way no more. Mr. Pope. Well, maybe not quite like that.[00:08:53] There would have been more hip, it would've been more hip, more colorful. Hey Pope, we ain't doing well anyway. Yeah, that we keep the expletive banner away from this podcast. So, but anyway, look, you can observe those changes. You can observe the fact that this energy is powerful. Definitely down to your toes.[00:09:19] So here's this other point that Fred made. Chapter seven in this book, time travel through consciousness and advanced technology is worth chapter seven alone. Even if you didn't touch the whole time travel piece. It's kind of an interlude chapter where he talks about nonlinear causality. Oh, I love it.[00:09:41] That's a big word. Okay, so what does it mean? Would you explain how you got from that . Right? Well, I think because people, humans are linear. We look at time as linear. There's a before and after the present. And that's how we look at cause and effect. Science teaches us [00:10:00] to look at cause and effect. But Fred is saying, and in a quantum sense, it's not linear.[00:10:07] It's very, very web, like very interwoven. And that is exactly what Fred talks about. So let's do a cause and effect. Okay, so let's say that you walk into a bank with a pistol and you demand money. You put the money in a pillow case, you run outside the bank. Now today with sophisticated cameras and early warning systems and alarms.[00:10:32] There are police waiting right outside for you. They capture you, they take you down, they take your gun away, you go to jail. There's video evidence of the event. So you are sentenced to a term in jail that's cause and effect, right? Based on our legal system. Yes. Okay. Now, what Fred is saying is if you have.[00:10:54] Greed, or let's say covetousness, to use a biblical word, right? If you covet the money that's in the bank, or if you're greedy about that money or let's even bring it into maybe more applicable terms, you feel that you don't have enough money. That's a way of being that is in the absence of linear time and space.[00:11:21] The same cause that will set up the trip of dominoes, of other things that come from being without money. Right. And you can even take that farther back, you know, say as a child, your growing up on a farm and. It's depression time and the, your father goes to try to get a loan from the first national bank and he's declined.[00:11:47] You lose the farm. Now you're in poverty and in your mind as you're growing up, the first national bank is to blame for that. For all of your hardships, the meals that you didn't get, how [00:12:00] hard you had to work at such a young age to contribute to your fine family's survival. Then as an adult, even though you don't really necessarily dwell on that any longer, if you find yourself stuck in a tough financial situation and maybe you're not approved for a loan or some other catastrophe happens immediately, the first national bank comes to mind.[00:12:25] All right? That's where you Rob, and so it's not linear time. It's really pulling from other circumstances throughout your whole life. It's that energy of negativity that you held towards first national bank for all of those years, that surface later, and because that energy was triggered from that childhood experience, we call that.[00:12:47] Subconscious programming. Exactly. Hello, how did we come to name this podcast? Because those experiences, think about this. Now connect these dots, those experiences imprint who we become energetically that trigger these nonlinear unconnected. Results seemingly and connected. Exactly. That's the whole point is that what Fred is saying is that when you become that lack of money or that resentment toward the bank.[00:13:29] Then that can trigger a whole wide series of nonlinear. Or in other words, it wasn't that, you know, you went in, you robbed, you got arrested, you went to jail. It's, that's a linear progression, right? But it is the whole dynamic of your life that then gets threaded around that way of being, you know, really good examples of this are, I think, present day movies.[00:13:54] People really like those movies that take it deeper. So. In this case, that [00:14:00] might be a movie line. And then you're really thinking, okay, this person, if the movie starts out that way, wow, what is this guy doing? Trying to steal everybody's money? And then it goes back and shows you the backstory, and now you have empathy for the guy.[00:14:13] So you're saying like our culture supports victim hood in that sense? It does. Absolutely. So Fred's point in the book is that these events that happen in our life. Are mostly tied to our way of being or our state. So if somebody says everything bad always happens to me, I can't get a break. And that's their state of being.[00:14:43] And they observe their life and they see that that is absolutely justified and they look at this material and they say, well, yeah, you talk about all that reality creating and manifesting stuff and all that, but it doesn't work. Are they ever going to get out of that loop? Of course not. Because where your energy is is what you will continue to attract.[00:15:03] Now, here's the key. It may not be on that action reaction or action reward. Sequence of linear causality that we're talking about. So in other words, you might be in that negative state and something happens that's positive, right? Yes. But the global theme of your life is going to continue to produce that according to which you are attracting from your perspective.[00:15:34] You know, one thing I think is so powerful, Joe Dispenza's book, you are the placebo. He talks about over 90% of your thoughts every day are one repetitious and two subconscious. So your state of being, if you aren't by nature or by programming a negative person, then most of those thoughts are negative thoughts, which is going [00:16:00] to bring more negative.[00:16:02] Energies into your life as things that happen to you to perpetuate your lack of self control and victimhood. And again, borrowing from the book, there's one line in there where he says, basically you are programmed subconsciously by repetition. So what you constantly feed your mind is the programming. It is, and it's, it is a real effort conscious.[00:16:30] Determined effort to change that. So I think the lesson from all of this is as we're seeing these headlines, as we're seeing the things around us, as we watch videos, I guess at some point of crops being destroyed in 30 seconds by locusts, and as we see friends and family succumbing to illnesses or loss, or even losing people close to us that we look around.[00:16:59] By observation, and I think this is the real key thing to drill down on, not only in your own own life. You have to observe what you are doing. What are you telling herself? And this is where we have to stop our pattern in our daily life enough to get our journal out and do this work where we analyze and review magenta.[00:17:20] And I did this on a walk just yesterday. Where are we? We started to look at, are there any. Cogs in the wheel. Are there any bad thoughts? Are there any repetitious thoughts or as Majona was saying, things that you resist? That's another big clue. If you're resisting something, anything in your conversation, your thoughts or your actions, that's a big clue that that's a piece of this programming.[00:17:47] So the point there is to identify it as an observer. So when you see these things going on around you, does that mean that that has to apply to you. [00:18:00] It does not necessarily apply to you, although probably most of the time it will if it's, if it's resonating with you and getting your attention, but no matter what the situation, I think the real point is to look at this and try to be objective.[00:18:15] Take your emotion out and say, what are the lessons here? What can I gain from this? Several years ago, Thomas and I were snow skiing and I just made a really stupid mistake and felt my knee pop and found myself lying in the snow trying to protect any further damage that turned out to be a broken tibia and two torn knee ligaments.[00:18:43] And literally as I was lying there waiting for someone to help, all I could think about was. There is no way. This is about one stupid mistake I just made. What is the real lesson here? What is this really about? And that set you on a long, I mean, an extended journey of self exploration. Yeah, because I'm stubborn.[00:19:06] It's the universe can't just give me a clue what it's about. It's going to have to show me repeatedly. I got it. And see, that's where I've approached this energy from this perspective. Here's how I've adapted to it. This is the most transformational energy that we have seen on this planet since the year 1518 I'm going to get my piece of it.[00:19:28] I'm going to be a part of it with ease and grace, ease and grace, and I am going to open up to the transformation that comes up as it comes up and as each one of these layers of the onion starts to peel, I am going to do the work. And I want the universe's support to work on it with me and to do it in a, in a as Benefic away as I will allow and I'm really been open to allowing it to be Benefic you are being actually here.[00:19:55] Amazing with that. I think having an accountability partner [00:20:00] is also very helpful, but even if you don't have one, Thomas and I serve in that capacity for each other. But you know yourself better than anybody else knows you. And Thomas will come up with things that I wouldn't necessarily realize for him.[00:20:16] And he'll say, you know, let's talk about this. Let's explore this. So Thomas, how do you recognize those parts of you that are so deep? I can't even see them. Wow. We try to keep these to 20 minutes. We just blew the 20 minutes question. Well, it goes back to number one, when, I changed everything in 2008, 2009, I had to find another way of being, or I was done, you know?[00:20:49] So I had to find a different life. I had to find a different way of living. That sent me on a quest because I had zero tools or zero knowledge of what we so freely communicate on here. Now, I had none of that, so I had to start with learning about it, acquiring research, study, listening to books, listening to audios, videos, et cetera.[00:21:14] Now, do you remember that course that we went to over in Lewisville at Joy's bookshop where that guy pointed at me and he said, you see how hungry this guy is for this knowledge? I do. That I think is probably the key. That number one, I have just for the last decade, have been on a self-driven every day desire to improve my life, and that's just core to who I am now.[00:21:40] I rarely have a day that I'm not just completely focused on how I, what one thing, if, if nothing else, one thing that I could pick up that I, where I could improve my life. So that's one. The second came through like doing so much work around Fred Dodson and picking up that way of [00:22:00] being, where intuition became one of the key things that I started to follow.[00:22:06] And that came from all those hiking trail. Class sessions in Colorado of getting in tune with the inside. So I think there's an increased perception. Or an ability to tone down the mind, turn up the intuition. And you notice a lot of those come when we're walking out there, and that's one of my favorite times, but when they come up, when that intuition comes up, it's like the Malcolm Gladwell blink theory that.[00:22:35] All of a sudden now it's the blink. So you don't argue with, Oh yeah, I can work on that later. No, when those things hit your consciousness for that very spark, and sometimes it's just a little spark, now I reach in and grab onto that and I hold onto it and I magnify it so that that becomes a topic of discussion.[00:22:56] And, and by bringing it up to you or starting to journal about it, or just starting to think about it in my mind, and I kind of have the same pattern. I go back to when it first showed up. I look at the situation and the circumstances around it. I look at how I responded to it. So that's what created the programming, and then I start to look in the opposite direction.[00:23:20] That's my little formula. And that is changing a habit, right? Because like you said, you often think, Oh, I'll deal with it later and later never happens. It has to be now, Nadia, not only even a habit, it's a way of being. So I think, you know, to replicate what we just said there is number one, you have to have that hunger to change your life.[00:23:39] If you don't have that. Absolute passion, yearning to change your life. Then you're just dabbling in this stuff because you try to want to make a little something better. Have you ever noticed a Starbucks at morning drive time and or a Chick-fil-A at lunchtime would be another analogy? How many people are [00:24:00] in the drive through.[00:24:01] And you can park your car and walk 45 feet into an empty line. Right. We are a drive through mentality. We will sit for 20 minutes in our car so that we don't have to get out of our car. Yeah. Just wait on me. Serve me. So apply that to spirituality. And it becomes that we become robotics. So let's think about our linear causality in life.[00:24:27] The alarm goes off, you get up, you take a shower, you get the kids ready. If you have kids, if you don't have kids, then you get yourself ready and you get out the door. You go sit in traffic, you go to a job. Basically you have somebody else tell you what to do for the next eight to 10 hours of your life.[00:24:41] You do all of that. For a paycheck, which we need, and then you fight traffic back home and you, if you have kids, help them with their homework, pick them up, take them to their events, et cetera. It may be you go for a walk, maybe you go to the gym, you sit down in front of the television, you watch some TV because it's mind neutralizing, and then you go to bed, rinse and repeat times five.[00:25:02] Okay, where is consciousness in there? There's not a lot of consciousness. It's survival. Yeah. And that's why we don't see this stuff. We have to break the pattern now. Yes. I was lucky enough at a point in my life created, I'm not going to say lucky, created a point in my life where I opened up a couple of years window.[00:25:23] And didn't, I mean, stumbled into it, but that time in Colorado was my time to really get conscious with this process. If you don't have that ability or if you don't have that, you know, dedicated step away from. Your culture and get into an environment where you can work that through. You can absolutely create it with all of these tools.[00:25:47] Fred Dodson's audio books. Fred's got a great membership site. We're getting ready to create a membership site that we're going to invite you into when we get that established Magenta's podcast on talking about the [00:26:00] nonphysical realm, her angel and guide meditation, and. And, also readings that she's doing.[00:26:06] I mean, all of this stuff that we've created, our resources and tools for you to be able to create that environment in your own world right now. So let's look at that real briefly as a nonlinear linear causality. Ah, good point. You opened up to a new way of being many years before you were presented with the opportunity to go to Aspen and focus on this.[00:26:32] Yeah, that's true. But that during that whole time you're, you're in the RV and all the whole time since then, you've been very focused on the changes and. Being self employed and having to the flexibility to travel and be who you want. That's been your focus is who do I want to be? So it didn't happen right away.[00:26:54] And I do believe a piece of that is the universe fully supporting you. Because if that would've happened too early, you would not have gotten nearly as much out of it as you did. Yeah, that is a great point. And it brings up the point that we're trying to make here. You have to become what you want. If you want to be a millionaire, you have to be a millionaire right now.[00:27:19] Yeah, but Thomas, I can't rub two nickels together in my bank account. How can I be a millionaire? You have to become that in your, not just your mind. I am a millionaire. I'm a millionaire. I am a millionaire. No, you have to be that in your consciousness. You. It's a deeper state than just affirmations or repetitions.[00:27:39] Now you get that by every day that you wake up, you be a millionaire. Yeah. But I don't have two nickels. Nothing's happening. That's where you're in the cause and effect the linear progression. So don't think that just because on the day that you're listening to this episode, all of a sudden you decide to be a millionaire.[00:28:00] [00:27:59] Great. What's next? Ah, you might go in debt. Yeah. We're not advocating that. You know, you might, bad things might happen. Something else might take place. It's non linear. But you hold, I am a millionaire. I am a millionaire. And you through repetition. And emotion reprogram your subconscious and you keep holding that than a non linear sequence.[00:28:29] Sequence of events will eventually present themselves. That will take you in that destination, in that direction. Now, here's the other thing. The question then comes up, well, how long does it take for that to manifest? Ah, as soon as you ask that question. It's not manifest well and you are not in that state.[00:28:50] Right. I said, I played with this with Majona yesterday. I still have my little miracle Jeep that I got when I was, the year in the RV in 2009. It's still doing great. It still looks great. It has 170,000 miles on it. It's still going strong. I still love that vehicle and I. I put my hand up on the dashboard, like I'm petting, it's a little back.[00:29:11] If it were a cat, and I'm saying, I love you. I love you. I do. I send it love because, I just really appreciate the universe giving me that vehicle. And as I was saying this to my Gianna, I wonder when I'm going to own a Jeep. You know, I've always wanted to own a Jeep. I wonder when that's going to happen.[00:29:30] What do you think that'll happen? Magena you know, I asked him, Hey, Majona, when do you think it'll happen? That I own a Jeep? And she goes, you already do, you know it's that I own a Jeep. I would never ask that question, right? So why would I even ask, when is my Jeep going to show up? Wait a minute. You know, look outside, it's there.[00:29:51] It is kind of fun to play with time, take out the linear aspect and, and it kind of opens, we think of it as make-believe or imagination. [00:30:00] Because we think it has to be linear. Have fun with it. All right, let's cut this one off for now. We've gone way over time. Sorry about that, but this was just going to good to say.[00:30:09] Let's stop. So thank you for hanging in there with us. We will see you back again soon. I've got a thing coming up from him at, we're going to go to Colorado and talk to my buddy him at about some yoga stuff and we have more coming up so we will see you next time. Thank you so much for listening. Enjoy the journey. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Interested in this topic? You might enjoy my book: Monsters in the Bible Our focus on this show is on the Bible, and how interesting it is. Sometimes the show will be straight up Bible Q and A - down to earth topics with answers solidly grounded in the biblical text. Sometimes the show topics will be a little more - out there, shall we say. Like today. Today's topic is Unicorns, and it is dedicated to my daughter, Phoebe - who is a huge unicorn fan. You might be wondering what Unicorns have to do with the Bible, but if you are a King James only kind of person, you probably already know that the word ‘Unicorns' appears in the KJV version of the Bible 9 times in the 1611 KJV and 9 times in the updated 1769 Standard version. At some point in the show, we will probably do a podcast solely focused on the  1611 KJV and King James Version only people. It's an interesting topic for me in particular, because most people in the KJV Only camp would reject the more Catholic associated apocryphal books of the Bible, and yet the 1611 KJV contains 14 apocryphal books, in addition to the OT and the NT. But I digress. One day soon, I think we will cover both the 1611 KJV AND the Apocrypha, but today is not that day.  Today is the day, however, that we cover unicorns. You might not know that unicorns are actually in the Bible - but they are. Sort of. In the Bible. Let's take a look:  Psalm 22: 19 But be not thou farre from mee, O Lord; O my strength, hast thee to helpe me. 20Deliuer my soule from the sword: my darling from the power of the dogge. 21Saue me from the lyons mouth: for thou hast heard me from the hornes of the vnicornes.  1611 So - let me say this. As I mentioned in the trailer for the show, I believe that the Bible is faithful and true - inerrant in its original language and absolutely trustworthy. Therefore, I believe that the Bible is speaking of a real animal here and is not putting forward some sort of myth, or what have you. Does that mean unicorns are/were real creatures? Not necessarily. Believing in the trustworthiness of the Bible, we have two options here for our KJV Unicorns.  #1 - Unicorns actually existed, but they are probably extinct now. #2 - The KJV translators of the Bible did not properly or exactly translate the Hebrew word for ‘unicorn.‘ We will take a long look at both options, but first, let's take a look at the Hebrew word itself.  Re'em, Reh·ām' Reh-Aim   from the Verb rä·am' (Rah-Am), which means to ‘Raise up.'  All 9 times Reh-Aim appears in the Old Testament, the 1611 and 1769 translators of the KJV used the word ‘unicorn.'  Here are all of the appearances of the word in the Bible. Let's pay attention to any physical descriptions to determine if the word Reh-Aim actually refers to the equine/horselike creature of fantasy and legend, or perhaps some other creature:  Numbers 23:22 God brought them out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn. Isaiah 34: And the Unicornes shall come downe with them, and the bullockes with the bulles, and their land shall be soaked with blood, and their dust made fat with fatnesse.8 For it is the day of the Lords vengeance, and the yeere of recompences for the controuersie of Zion.  KJV 1611 Deuteronomy 33:17 His glory is like the firstling of his bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns: with them he shall push the people together to the ends of the earth: and they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh. Job 39:9 Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib? Job 39:10 Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee? Psalms 22:21 Already read.  Psalms 29:6 He maketh them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young unicorn. Psalms 92:10 But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil. Isaiah 34:7 And the unicorns shall come down with them, and the bullocks with the bulls; and their land shall be soaked with blood, and their dust made fat with fatness. So some interesting passages, to be sure. The KJV Bible seems to indicate that God has the strength of a unicorn, That his horns are like the horns of the unicorns, and that God is coming with unicorns and bulls on the day of judgment.  So, wow - what in the world is going on here? Here's what we learn from these passages, remembering that the actual Hebrew word in question is reh-Aim . Reh-Aims are powerful, they are difficult to control or tame, they have at least one horn (more on that later) and they are quite wild and untamable, Unfortunately, that description fits many wild animals, and doesn't really tell us exactly what creature the authors of the OT were referring to, though we can safely remove three toed sloths, dung beetles, and platypodes from consideration. The Bible's mention of unicorns was not lost on the leaders of the early church, who also puzzled over these passages.  Origen, an early church father living in the 200s, wrote this : “other prohibitions such as that to eat of the unicorn (τραγέλαφος), a creature which has no existence” Source: Frederic William Farrar, History of Interpretation (London: Macmillan and Co., 1886), 192. Jerome, however, seems to have believed in the reality of these beasts, writing,  “There are beasts of this sort in the desert of the East, but they are never seen by human beings or captured by them.” (circa 400 A.D.)  Source: John Cassian, John Cassian: The Conferences, ed. Walter J. Burghardt, John Dillon, and Dennis D. McManus, trans. Boniface Ramsey, vol. 57, Ancient Christian Writers (New York; Mahwah, NJ: Newman Press, 1997), 578. Theoderot also writing in the 400s, seems to take the Unicorn as symbolic, in a way, used by the biblical writers as a sort of euphemism: “They say the unicorn is equipped with one horn, and the Law gave instructions for adoring one God; so it was right for him to liken the one Temple, dedicated to the one God, to a unicorn.” Theodoret of Cyrus, Commentary on the Psalms: Psalms 73–150, ed. Thomas P. Halton, trans. Robert C. Hill, vol. 102, The Fathers of the Church (Washington, DC: The Catholic University of America Press, 2001), 39. So  - lots of information so far, but no answers. Back to our original question: Does the Bible proclaim the existence of unicorns?  Here are our two options:  Yes, the Bible teaches that Unicorns, the fantastical beasts of legend, exist, or once existed, or no - the word Reh-aim means something different.  On the yes side, Dr. Elizabeth Mitchell, writing for Answers in Genesis, says this:  Modern readers have trouble with the Bible's unicorns because we forget that a single-horned feature is not uncommon on God's menu for animal design. (Consider the rhinoceros and narwhal.) The Bible describes unicorns skipping like calves (Psalm 29:6), traveling like bullocks, and bleeding when they die (Isaiah 34:7). The presence of a very strong horn on this powerful, independent-minded creature is intended to make readers think of strength. The absence of a unicorn in the modern world should not cause us to doubt its past existence. (Think of the dodo bird. It does not exist today, but we do not doubt that it existed in the past.) Eighteenth century reports from southern Africa described rock drawings and eyewitness accounts of fierce, single-horned, equine-like animals. One such report describes “a single horn, directly in front, about as long as one's arm, and at the base about as thick. . . . [It] had a sharp point; it was not attached to the bone of the forehead, but fixed only in the skin.” SOURCE Dr. Mitchell goes on to mention a few other possibilities for the Reh-Aim, but does clearly seem to favor an equine, mono-horned solution - much like what we would call a unicorn. She does mention some evidences scattered about for such a creature as well, including drawings and eyewitness accounts from Africa of possible unicorn sightings.  This brings to mind that cryptid from the Congo in Africa that many talk about - the Mokele Mpembe. “ "one who stops the flow of rivers”   A German explorer, Captain Ludwig Von Stein, wrote this as a description of the Mokele Mpembe: The animal is said to be of a brownish-gray color with a smooth skin, its size is approximately that of an elephant; at least that of a hippopotamus. It is said to have a long and very flexible neck and only one tooth but a very long one; some say it is a horn. A few spoke about a long, muscular tail like that of an alligator. Canoes coming near it are said to be doomed; the animal is said to attack the vessels at once and to kill the crews but without eating the bodies. The creature is said to live in the caves that have been washed out by the river in the clay of its shores at sharp bends. It is said to climb the shores even at daytime in search of food; its diet is said to be entirely vegetable. This feature disagrees with a possible explanation as a myth. The preferred plant was shown to me, it is a kind of liana with large white blossoms, with a milky sap and applelike fruits. At the Ssombo River I was shown a path said to have been made by this animal in order to get at its food. The path was fresh and there were plants of the described type nearby. But since there were too many tracks of elephants, hippos, and other large mammals it was impossible to make out a particular spoor with any amount of certainty Is such a thing possible? I've no idea. It makes for a great campfire tale, but the lack of fossilized remains does seem to be a bit of a strike against the creature.  Likewise, the lack of fossilized remains seems to be a strike against the existence of an equine-style unicorn. In fact, I think, barring evidence to the contrary, it's likely that such a creature has never existed. Perhaps a horse or other horse-like animal with one horn has been seen - such mutations occasionally happen, but I'd like to see more evidence for a mythical unicorn before I sign on enthusiastically.  So that brings us to option #2 for Unicorns in the Bible. And that option is that the translators of the KJV, like the translators of the Latin Vulgate upon which much of the KJV is based on, mistranslated the word ‘Reh-Aim'.  Michael Heiser, Logos scholar in Residence  - the difficulties of Bible Translation.  SOURCE:  http://www.biblestudymagazine.com/bible-study-magazine-blog/2017/2/28/treason-translation   A famous Italian proverb declares “traduttore, traditore,” which means, “Translator, traitor.” Those who assume this is true are unaware how difficult it is to produce a translation. Every translator at some point invariably discards the meaning of the original text. A committee of scholars assembled to produce a translation typically adopts an overarching philosophy of translation. In simplest terms, there are two. The first is called “formal equivalence,” which seeks to account for virtually every word in the original text by producing its English counterpart in translation. This is “word-for-word” or “literal” translation. The second is called “dynamic equivalence.” This approach seeks to capture the thought of the original verse in context, and then re-create that thought using whatever English words are most precise. This is “thought-for-thought” translation. But adopting an approach does not mean that all the translators will apply it equally. There is also a matter of interpretation. When the biblical text allows more than one translation due to ambiguity in the context, grammar, or word usage, a translator needs to make his or her own decision—which can lead to controversy. First Corinthians 7:1 is illustrative of the potential hazard. ESV: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” NASB: “It is good for a man not to touch a woman.” NIV: “It is good for a man not to marry.” TNIV: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” NLT: “It is good to live a celibate life.” The most “word-for-word” of these translations is that of the NASB, which captures the literal reading of the Greek words in the verse, particularly the verb “touch” (ἅπτοµαι, haptomai). Other translations move away from the ambiguous “touch” to “have sexual relations with” (ESV, TNIV). The most controversial renderings are the NIV (“It is good for a man not to marry”) and the NLT (“It is good to live a celibate life”). How is it that the translators could go from a Greek word that means “touch” to these options? The answer is that the translators factored in what was presumed to be the wider context of the chapter and, ultimately, the writer. In 1 Cor 7:7–8, Paul describes himself as single. His advice to the Corinthians in several places is that it would be wiser for those who are not married to remain unmarried (1 Cor 7:7–8, 26–27) because of an undefined “present distress” (7:26). This context is presumed in 7:1 by the NIV and NLT. These translations are certainly plausible, but still problematic. While Paul notes a “present distress” in 7:27, can we be certain that Paul was thinking of that distress in 7:1? Might Paul have been thinking about sexual morality instead? The verses that immediately follow 7:1 speak frankly of sexual temptation (7:2–4). If morality was on Paul's mind, then the ESV and TNIV are more on target. The point would then be an admonition to avoid sexual contact outside of marriage, not to avoid marriage itself. Translation isn't just a matter of matching words of one language to words of another. Rather than consider Bible translators as traitors, we need to be sympathetic to their burden. Reading multiple translations can reveal the complexities of the process. SOURCE:Of the above): http://www.biblestudymagazine.com/bible-study-magazine-blog/2017/2/28/treason-translation   This doesn't mean that we can't understand the Bible, of course - but what we are dealing with in this question of the unicorn, and what we are dealing with when we read some of the more thorny issues in Paul's letters is largely the same thing - the difficulty in translation. It's not an insurmountable difficulty, but it does require some careful study and thought. Back to Unicorns. I believe the best way to handle the unicorn/Reh-Aim issue is to realize that the writers of the KJV likely used a word, ‘Unicorn' which is a less than ideal translation. I have yet to see evidence that convinces me that these KJV translators themselves believed in the mythical unicorn. So, going with the thought that ‘Unicorn' isn't the best translation or meaning of Reh-Aim, what is? I suggest three Three possibilities, and then conclude with what I think is the best option:  Siberien Unicorn Elasmotherium sibiricum four metres long, 2.5 metres high, weighs 3.5 metric tonnes and has a preposterously large horn in the middle of its face? For you American listeners, we're talking 14 feet long, almost 9 feet tall, and beefier than your'e uncle Bubba carrying a four by four tire.  The Elasmotherium Sibircum is  A really massive unicorn, that's what….Despite its huge size it was lithe and seemed adapted to running across its homelands of central Asia: Kazakhstan, western and central Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan, and possible areas of Mongolia and China.   This animal GREATLY matches the biblical description of the Reh-Aim. It was large, powerful, had an incredible horn, but was also agile and fast.   According to Cosmos Magazine, “Until now, E. sibiricum had been thought to have gone extinct about 200,000 years ago as part of the natural extinction rate that preceded the arrival of humanity,” The radiocarbon dating yielded some surprising results, suggesting that the unicorn was still kicking until 39,000 years ago.  So, science up until late last year, was off on the extinction of the Elasmotherium by about 160,000 years. What if they are still off by a few more thousand years - what if Elasmotherium lived until Old Testament times? Not very likely, but a distant possibility. I rank this as the 3rd most likely explanation of Reh-aim.  2. Our second most plausible explanation is that the Reh-aim is actually what we would call a rhinoceros. There's a few solid reasons to go in this direction. For one, The Latin Vulgate says "rinocerotis" in Deut 33:17 and "rinoceros" in Job 39:9. The noble rhino would, like the Siberian ‘unicorn'  Professor Allen H. Godbey wrote an extended article on the biblical ‘unicorn in 1939. In that article, he notes that Pliny's Natural History records that in roughly 62 B.C., a rhinoceros was exhibited during the games of Pompey the Great. That rhinoceros had white skin, was roughly the size of an elephant, and that it had a single horn on its nose. Though we would hesitate to think of a rhino as graceful, they can be quite powerful, and fast, and undoubtedly have a large and powerful horn. Would that writers of the Old Testament be familiar with the rhino? It is possible, though nowhere near certain. 3. Finally, I would suggest that the most likely explanation for the Reh-aim would be either the extinct aurochs, or an animal very similar. I realize, of course, that an aurochs does not merely have one horn, but two, and that is okay. It does not appear that the original Hebrew word Reh-aim, demands a one-horned animal. Indeed, one way of translating Numbers 23:22, the way that the NASB, ESV and CSB translations choose,  is to say “"God brings them out of Egypt, He is for them like the horns of the wild ox.” The Hebrew for “horns” tow'apaha (also translated strength or glory) is indeed plural. That means that the mighty aurochs ticks all of the boxes off for the old testament description of a Reh-aim. It is large, and powerful. Difficult to tame, and quick, and has very imposing horns. In addition, unlike our options above, the aurochs appears to have inhabited Israel during the time of the Old Testament. Sadly, it would appear that the last aurochs died out in a forest in Poland in 1627. Happily, I think, there are several genetic projects underway right now to reintroduce the aurochs, though I can indeed imagine a sort of mammalian Jurassic Park scenario here that doesn't necessarily end well. Julius Caesar himself was quite familiar with the aurochs (whom he called an ‘urs,' and described him thusly in the first century:  “Those animals which are called uri. These are a little below the elephant in size, and of the appearance, colour, and shape of a bull. Their strength and speed are extraordinary; they spare neither man nor wild beast which they have espied. These the Germans take with much pains in pits and kill them. The young men harden themselves with this exercise, and practice themselves in this sort of hunting, and those who have slain the greatest number of them, having produced the horns in public, to serve as evidence, receive great praise. But not even when taken very young can they be rendered familiar to men and tamed. The size, shape, and appearance of their horns differ much from the horns of our oxen. These they anxiously seek after, and bind at the tips with silver, and use as cups at their most sumptuous entertainments.” Source: Gallic War Commentaries, Chapter 6.28 One more reason to support the candidacy of the mighty aurochs as the Biblical ‘unicorn' comes from the 1906 Jewish Encyclopedia:  The allusions to the "re'em" as a wild, untamable animal of great strength and agility, with mighty horns (Job xxxix. 9-12; Ps. xxii. 21, xxix. 6; Num. xxiii. 22, xxiv. 8; Deut. xxxiii. 17; comp. Ps. xcii. 11), best fit the aurochs (Bos primigenius). This view is supported by the Assyrian "rimu," which is often used as a metaphor of strength, and is depicted as a powerful, fierce, wild, or mountain bull with large horns. Finally, Dr. Allen H. Godbey, who probably studied this question more than anybody in history, concludes: “The decisive factor came with the deciphering of the cuneiform inscriptions... reaching back four thousand years earlier than any Hebrew text that we have, [the texts] give the word rimu repeatedly... It is a gigantic wild ox. The cuneiform ideogram confines him to the mountains.” Source: The Unicorn in the Old Testament, 1939 Ultimately, though I am team aurochs, I think that recognizing the ambiguity of the term and preserving it, is the best approach here, because even though the aurochs checks all of our boxes, the evidence for it is circumstantial, at best. Therefore, we should probably do what most modern Bible translators do with the passage, which is similar to how they handle another passage of mystery, Genesis 6:4. In the KJV, Genesis 6:4 reads, “There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.”  What the translators did there is render the Hebrew word Nephilim as ‘Giants,' a very interesting translation, to be sure, but quite a problematic one.  Let's look at a more modern translation. Genesis 6:4 “The Nephilim were on the earth both in those days and afterward, when the sons of God came to the daughters of mankind, who bore children to them. They were the powerful men of old, the famous men.” Yes, it's a bit of a cop-out, but in the absence of compelling evidence that the best translation of Nephilim is ‘giants,' I think it might be a good cop-out, especially given that we have almost no idea whatsoever a Nephilim actually is. More on this in a future episode of this podcast.  Given all of the above, Numbers 23:22 would have been better rendered by the translators of the King James Version as, “God brought them out of Egypt; he hath, as it were, the strength of a great horned beast.”  In doing that, though we have slightly elongated the text, we have faithfully translated it in a better and much less problematic way. A rendering that preserves clarity while translating re'em Reh-Aim accurately and understandably in a way that avoids guessing about what exact animal the original authors of the Old Testament were referring to.  That doesn't solve the mystery, of course, but it is our best and safest option. Of course, we could also simply say, “He hath, as it were, the strength of a re'em.  Unfortunately, it means that we'll have to file this mystery in our ‘cold case' file. The identity of Reh-aim will remain a secret to us, and is likely to remain so until the Second Coming. Alas.  Well, that's all for this episode. I'm grateful that you took the time to listen - thank you for that! If you are particularly interested in this topic, I'd like to point you to my (in progress) book, Monsters in the Bible. Often when Black History Month rolls around, we focus on the emancipation efforts that happened in North America. I get pretty offended that we don't pay homage to the emancipation efforts that took place in other Black spaces around the world, so this month I will profile 4 people. Their history, their accomplishments and their legacy in the hopes in sparking conversations about what happened across the African Diaspora. Last week's episode was Kwame Nkrumah, this week is the Democratic Republic of Congo's first democratically-elected President, Patrice Lumumba.References:Smyth, Patrick. (2018). June 4th 2013 - Time to go deep this episode...... meltwater, icecap, space sheep and false dawn. Just a couple of titles of tracks you will hear this episode. After our party-weekend (Celebration of the new Fresh Air! formula via Mixcloud) this is a very welcome after-party mix. The opening came to us via e-mail; JEFX makes music of all kinds, we sure do like this ambient piece! Followed by the brand new album release on Ultimae records, the new MIKTEK album called ‘Elsewhere’ is a true sweet ambient release; perfect for livingroom and bedroom. We play three tracks, you find the markers... Time for great music from Germany with Erik Seifert, music we should play more often I think... it’s adventurous and well produced, certainly tracks that tell a story and have this typical classic electronic sound we grew up with. Two tracks from two different albums, you’love the pieces and your neighbours as well. ‘Your Personal Sun’ by ASTRONAUT APE... what can we say?.... brilliant piece! Play it loud. It’s the album released on Microcosmos Records, one we’ve played more before because it’s good, very good stuff. The ‘Borderline’ track by AES DANA gives that lovely deep feeling, mixed with steady beat, fancy percussion and wide reverb.... just awesome in every situation. Special delivery; please meet Halcyon Hall, coming from Petersburg (Russia) this is Dennis D. explaining to us what electronic music really means.... I literally fell of my chair. This is a true treasure for your ears, body and soul. And you know what? The album is a free download on Soundcloud. When we asked him why he has done this he told us: “ it’s the first meet and greet with the audience, I like to offer them a free gift to introduce myself...” Go, go , go for it people! We @ spacemusic look forward to the next album by Halcyon Hall - No matter how much it will cost us... Final track by TMA ft. Martinson, a Syngate Release (Luna) We’re back now, comfortable, simply beautiful track ‘Before Midnight’, like a soundseeingtour and a trigger to play the whole mix again from start....! Feel free.
