Dublin Port has begun a €2.5 million programme of essential remedial works to repair the Great South Wall rock armour, which was damaged in December's Storm Bram. The wall is a critical piece of national marine infrastructure and one of Dublin's most cherished public and historic amenities. Built between 1720 and 1795, the wall is more than 230 years old and still stands in its original form. Today it continues to perform an important engineering function of safeguarding and sheltering the shipping channel into Dublin Port and supporting the safe movement of the vessels that facilitate €165 billion of trade and 1.7m people each year. Urgent repairs following December's severe storms The wall's rock armour has recently sustained damage from increasingly severe weather, as seen throughout January and also including December's Storm Bram – the fifth strongest storm ever recorded on the Irish Sea. During the storm, sections of the existing rock armour, which protects the breakwater, were loosened and displaced. Urgent remedial works are now required. The five-week programme of works will involve replacing lost rock armour at the roundhead near Poolbeg Lighthouse, using material sourced from Arklow. The works will be undertaken by Murphy, and the Port has engaged with all customers regarding relevant updates to sailing practices. A section of the wall, approximately 100 metres from the Poolbeg Lighthouse, is temporarily closed to the public while these works are underway. Climate pressures are intensifying on historic coastal defences Cormac Kennedy, Head of Commercial at Dublin Port, said: "With increasing wave heights, there has been an exponential increase in the power of these waves. That means the wall will continue to encounter more frequent and more damaging storms, and we need to move swiftly to remediate recent damage. What we are doing now is the first phase of works, with more extensive rock armour placement planned over the coming years. "As we deliver on our Masterplan, the impacts of climate change are built into the design of all our projects. We are already strengthening our coastal protection along the Tolka estuary, which will form part of the potential expansion of the Tolka Estuary Greenway. "These remedial works are part of our environmental and conservation responsibilities, which recognise the potential impacts of changing weather patterns and sea level rise. With this work, we are seeking to protect Dublin Port and to continue to safeguard shipping operations." Port Engineer, Eamon McElro,y added: "As storms become more severe, we need to work quickly to protect this crucial piece of marine infrastructure. Our regular laser scanning and 3D modelling of the wall has shown some movement in the rock armour, which requires us to act now to ensure the strength of the Great South Wall. "The walls exist in a harsh marine environment requiring us to closely monitor any movement of the rock armour and wall integrity. Protecting the wall is a key component of our response to climate change, strengthening our infrastructure to protect the Port and the national monument for decades to come. "While these works are ongoing, we would like to remind the public to take extra care when visiting the Great South Wall. Visitors are advised to wear appropriate footwear, be mindful of changing weather and sea conditions, and fully respect any safety signage or temporary cordons in place. We also ask everyone to play their part in protecting this historic national monument by taking litter home and helping to preserve the wall for Dubliners, visitors from around the country, and international tourists for generations to come." With Valentine's Day just around the corner, singles across Ireland are turning to their phones in the search for love. To find out which counties are most actively looking for romance, Virgin Media Ireland, Ireland's leading telecommunications and entertainment provider, analysed Google search data from February 2023 to 2025 to reveal which counties are most actively on the lookout for love. Dublin leads the way as Ireland's online dating capital, recording over 16,000 dating-related searches during February across the past three years. This works out at 1,124 searches per 100,000 people, the highest in the country. With fast-paced lifestyles, busy work schedules, and plenty of social spots, many Dubliners are turning to online dating as an easy way to meet potential partners. Carlow ranks second, with 1,001 dating-related searches per 100,000 people across February over the past three years. Valentine's Day is a popular time for singles in the county to get back on dating apps, particularly as February consistently sees a spike in online dating related searches. With its busy nightlife and walkable town centre, Carlow makes it easy for online matches to move quickly from messages to real-life meet-ups. Waterford takes third place, recording 793 searches per 100,000 people. As Ireland's oldest city, Waterford has centuries of romantic history behind it, from Viking love stories to modern-day Valentine's dates along the coast. The mix of city buzz and seaside settings makes it a popular spot for those hoping their online match might turn into something more. Longford ranks fourth, with 770 per 100,000 people. In a county where everyone tends to know everyone, Valentine's season sees many singles widening the net through dating apps. Online matches offer a bit of mystery, making first dates feel that little bit more exciting in a place where familiar faces are the norm. Rounding out the top five is Leitrim, which logged 767 dating-related searches per 100,000 people. As Ireland's least populated county, Leitrim shows how online dating is changing Valentine's Day for rural singles. Apps allow people to meet beyond county lines, turning quiet February evenings into the start of long-distance love stories, weekend trips, or surprise Valentine's plans. Week 44 takes us firmly into the 20th century, with a strong Irish lineup: James Joyce's “The Dead" from The Dubliners, the opening of Ulysses, and Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot.Joyce surprised me—in the very best way. “The Dead” is rich, intimate, and beautifully written, capturing married love, memory, and Dublin itself as if the city were another character. The opening of Ulysses was stranger and more dreamlike, but not impenetrable; I'm no longer afraid of it, even if I'm not sure the whole novel is in my future.Beckett, on the other hand, infuriated me. Waiting for Godot struck me as deliberately empty, a meditation on meaninglessness that simply wasn't for me, even while I understand its cultural impact.This week underscored how much I've grown as a reader: more patient, more persistent, and open to genres I never imagined loving. Wastewater treatment is an overlooked lifesaver. While the medical advances of the last 100 years—penicillin, chemotherapy, and, more recently, mRNA vaccines—have transformed healthcare, keeping our water supplies free from pathogens like cholera and dysentery, has saved many more lives. The systems developed to treat wastewater are so successful that we can afford to flush and forget. But this is infrastructure we must not overlook. Growing populations, increased use by industry, and regulations that get tighter as we learn of new threats to human life and the environment, are putting wastewater treatment facilities under strain. Existing plants are often tucked away on constrained sites, and work as part of a sprawling network of sewage systems that make it extremely difficult for them to be relocated. This is very much the case at Ringsend in Dublin. Here, on a site bounded by other facilities and the sea, the waste produced by millions of Dubliners—and the city's industry and commerce—must be processed before being discharged into the Liffey Estuary. To update the plant, its owners had considered building a 9km pipe to discharge waste outside of the sensitive areas of the estuary. But a new solution was identified. By implementing a novel form of biological treatment, developed by Haskoning, Egis was able to ensure that the effluent discharged was so clean, it would be safe for wildlife. But installing this would take careful planning and scheduling, in order to complete the work in tight constraints, without any pause in plant operations. The use of phrasing is also noteworthy, sometimes sharp and staccato, and sometimes smooth and flowing. It's as though the language itself has a tempo, texture, and pitch all its own. As though the story were a musical piece in and of itself. Hopefully this becomes even clearer in an audio format. Dublin City Council is pleased to announce the BikeBunkers service to provide secure bicycle storage units for residents. The service is designed to make cycling more convenient and help address one of the biggest challenges for urban cyclists, the lack of secure and accessible bike storage close to home. This milestone follows the success of a pilot project, where 12 bike bunkers were installed in selected residential areas to test demand and gather feedback. The results were overwhelmingly positive; every unit was fully subscribed, and residents strongly supported expanding the programme. Building on this success, Dublin City Council has developed a comprehensive framework to deliver up to 300 BikeBunkers across the city. The framework will run for 10 years, with an initial 4-year service contract. Following a competitive procurement process, Bleeper has been appointed as the operator to commission, deliver, install, maintain, and service the BikeBunkers. This will be a budget-friendly, subsidised service supported by Dublin City Council, making secure bike parking more accessible to residents across the city. For years, it was widely believed that Dublin escaped the worst of the Famine. But is that really the case?In this episode, I'm joined by Dublin historian Maria Ball, who shares her unique insights into how the Famine impacted the capital and why its story has faded from memory. Drawing on her own family's history in the Smithfield tenements, Maria reveals the hidden struggles faced by Dubliners during the 1840s. Dublin City Council is calling on Dubliners to 'Be Sound This Summer' with a public awareness campaign, renewing its call for everyone to be respectful and to prioritise safety when walking, cycling, or driving on the city's streets during the busy summer months. As part of the launch, activations are taking place around the city this morning. Pedestrians and cyclists are being rewarded by "Soundness Detectors" for positive behaviour, thanking those who look out for others and prioritise safety. Commuters will be rewarded for their "sound" behaviour with an 'I'm Sound' badge that they can wear proudly! Following on from the successful original 'Be Sound' campaign launched in January, this summer campaign features a series of short, snappy social media videos featuring the Lane Hog, the Dangerous Dasher and the Light Breaker. These will be rolled out across Dublin City Council's social media channels, highlighting everyday ways to be sound. Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Ray McAdam, speaking about the campaign, said, "As a city, we're working to make travel safer, cleaner, and more connected - not just through infrastructure, but through how we treat one another. 'Be Sound This Summer' is about recognising and celebrating those small, everyday actions that make our streets safer and more respectful for everyone. By adding a bit of fun and positivity to the message, we're encouraging all road users to look out for each other. Whatever way you travel, being sound goes a long way." Recent findings from Dublin City Council's 'Your Dublin Your Voice' survey show that active travel plays a central role in how people get around the city. On average, people split their weekly transport time almost evenly between walking or wheeling (41%) and driving (40%), with a further 19% spent cycling. Dublin City Council continues to roll out dedicated infrastructure across the city, with three vital active travel schemes being completed within the next four weeks: the Ranelagh Village interim scheme, Beatty's Avenue to Herbert Park (part of the Dodder Greenway) scheme, and the Royal Canal Phase 3 scheme. With the summer months bringing more people out walking, cycling and driving, particularly around holidays and city events, Dublin City Council is reminding everyone to be alert and considerate on the streets so people can feel safer opting for more sustainable modes of transport. Active travel doesn't just support safer roads; it also delivers wide-reaching health and economic benefits. According to the most recent 'Walking and Cycling Index', walking and cycling in Dublin removes up to 530,000 cars from the roads each day and generates an annual benefit of €2.39 billion for individuals and the wider city. It also prevents 3,655 serious long-term health conditions each year and saves the health service approximately €64.5?million, equivalent to over 1.17?million GP appointments. Christopher K Manzira, (Acting) Director for the Active Travel Programme Office, Dublin City Council, at the launch said, "With more people choosing to travel actively across the city, we all have a shared responsibility to look out for one another. 'Be Sound' is a reminder that safety and respect are essential on our streets. Whether you're walking to the shop, wheeling to work, or driving through town, a little soundness can make a big difference. The data shows that active travel benefits us all, from reducing emissions to easing congestion as well as the additional health benefits. We want everyone to feel confident and safe doing so." The 'Be Sound this Summer' campaign will be visible across social media, digital channels, and on-street activity. On Thursday's Monring Focus Alan Morrissey was joined by Mike Taylor, Director of Policy FASD and Lucy Killackey, Clare Macra Member. Almost nine in 10 18-to-34 year-olds know someone who is still living at home because they can't afford to buy their own home. A new survey also shows a staggering number of this age cohort know someone who is planning to emigrate because of the housing crisis. Dubliners were most likely to know someone who has left Ireland due to housing affordability, at 45 per cent - while those living in Munster were least likely, at 33 per cent. This begs the question: how can the younger generation start a family, if they can't move out of their parents' home and build their future elsewhere? And, given the situation, will that elsewhere be abroad, where it could be easier to find a home of their own? Earlier, Alan spoke with Fianna Fáil Councillor Rachel Hartigan.

The Donnybrook Fair is recalled in ballad and memoir as a notorious and chaotic annual event, but what really went on there? Over centuries, the annual fair drew revellers from near and far to Donnybrook, but a combination of social reformers successfully brought about its demise in the 1850s. In this story, we meet characters as diverse as prize fighter Dan Donnelly, and civic reformer James Haughton.  This month marks the twentieth anniversary of the passing of the great Frank Harte, a truly remarkable man and Dubliner, who brought this fair to life in his singing.

This week's episode of Inside Business starts with an interview with Irish entrepreneur Jordan Dargan.Fans of the popular BBC show The Apprentice, will have seen Jordan come within a whisker of reaching the final two who got to pitch to secure Lord Sugar's £250,000 investment.There was some consolation for the 22-year-old Dubliner with Lord Sugar giving him his business card before he left the boardroom and encouraging him to keep in touch. It's been reported that more than 1,000 Syrians have been killed in the past few days in clashes between security forces and loyalists of ousted President Bashar al-Assad, and revenge killings that followed. Since then, over 800 women have climbed Everest, yet they still only make up an estimated 12% of all climbers to tackle the mountain. Rebecca Stephens is the first British woman to summit Everest and tells us more about Junko.Have you been watching Toxic Town? The Netflix series tells the story of a town's toxic waste case. It follows the real-life battle of families in Corby who gave birth to children with limb differences in the 1980s and 1990s and their search for answers and justice. In 2009, after a long legal battle the High Court ruled Corby Borough Council was negligent in managing the waste. And in 2010 families affected won a financial settlement.
