Did you know that many people with OCD still turn to medication as a first option, even though psychotherapy could be just as effective, if not more so? In this episode of The OCD Whisperer Podcast, host Kristina is joined by Dr. Amy Huberman, a psychiatrist specializing in OCD, anxiety, and trauma. Dr. Huberman discusses her journey from prescribing medication to focusing solely on psychotherapy as a way to treat OCD. In their conversation, Dr. Huberman shares how her initial belief in the necessity of medication shifted after observing the remarkable progress some patients made through intensive cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). She describes how, during her residency at Johns Hopkins, she learned that OCD, anxiety, and depression were often treated with medication, but over time, she began to see the power of psychotherapy in helping patients regain their agency—allowing them to take control of their lives and symptoms. Dr. Huberman also opens up about her decision to stop prescribing medication and dedicate her practice to providing intensive psychotherapy. She reflects on the benefits and challenges of this decision, emphasizing that therapy, especially tailored CBT techniques, can have a profound and lasting impact on patients. This episode offers insight into a psychiatric professional's personal and professional journey toward providing more holistic and individualized care. Whether you're struggling with OCD yourself or working in the mental health field, this conversation is a deep dive into the evolving treatment options for OCD and anxiety. Exactly what that person said in that comment is that everyone with OCD or anxiety disorders or depression should receive medication." - Dr. Amy Huberman [00:04:48] “I saw patients fully getting their lives back, really recovering in a sustained and full way, that was in the few months when I received some training in cognitive behavioral therapy.” - Dr. Amy Huberman [00:08:34] “So when I left residency and sort of started my own practice, I, you know, despite the fact that I was already so excited about psychotherapy and questioning a little bit, at least the message that I had taken away from my training of medication must always be a part of treating somebody with OCD or anxiety." - Dr. Amy Huberman [00:14:34] “The things that people were telling me was most helpful to them were not actually the medication pieces but the psychotherapy, which has honestly always been the part that I really loved about working with patients.” - Dr. Amy Huberman [00:21:38] “Understanding what our symptoms say about us, reveal about us, that's actually really important and positive.” - Dr. Amy Huberman [00:23:03] “When I hold a knife up to my loved one's neck and I don't do the thing that I think I'm going to do, that process itself can reveal, 'Oh right, this is actually the person I am, somebody who would never want to do that.'” - Dr. Amy Huberman Our Guest Dr. Amy Huberman, a skilled psychiatrist on the volunteer faculty at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, brings her expertise to individuals through private practice in Maryland. This is a birth story episode that really warmed my heart. Tiffany used knowledge to overcome fears around being a woman of color getting pregnant and giving birth. As someone who researches everything, she knew she needed to be prepared with information to go through the birth process, especially as a first time mom. Tiffany says “Finding Dr. Rankins, a Black woman like myself, gave me the courage to face birth and pregnancy head on. Most importantly, I was empowered to advocate for myself because I had the knowledge I needed to do so.” A lot of the things she talks about are really problems ALL women can face, regardless of race. The medical system can take away the power women have over what happens to their own bodies. Education is one of the most powerful tools you can have at your disposal to ensure you get the care you need. Tiffany's experience with the birth prep class helped her to trust her own body and have a beautiful birth. In this Episode, You'll Learn About: -What made Tiffany apprehensive about getting pregnant and giving birth -What her pregnancy was like including some uncomfortable encounters -How the birth prep course helped her prepare for her birth -How an experience of losing consciousness and vomiting influenced her birth -How she was able to have beauty in her birth even though it didn't go exactly as planned -Why she had to stop breastfeeding and how she handled the feelings that came along with that difficult decision -How doctors treated her differently depending on whether her husband accompanied her to appointments Full website notes: drnicolerankins.com/episode140 Register for my free birth plan class - How to Make a Birth Plan That Works. MercyOne encourages everyone who is eligible and able to receive a vaccination to protect yourself from COVID-19. Unvaccinated people are more susceptible to the virus and its variants, and people who are not vaccinated make up most COVID-19 hospitalizations today. Many individuals could avoid the hospital entirely if they had been vaccinated. Still, there are many eligible individuals who have not been vaccinated, citing a number of reasons or concerns. In this episode, we bring those concerns to infectious disease expert Aneesa Afroze, MD, to provide additional context and even dispel some myths. Claim: The vaccine is experimental and not safe. Fact: The vaccine has Emergency Use Authorization and with more than 350 million doses administered in the U.S. the vaccine has received the most intense safety monitoring of any vaccine in history. Note: The Pfizer vaccine received FDA approval on August 23, 2021. Claim: The vaccine may cause infertility or impact pregnancy. Fact: There is nothing to indicate the vaccines impact the ability to conceive a child. There were no significant safety concerns observed during clinical trials. The vaccine when given in the third trimester of pregnancy will allow your baby to obtain some protection through antibodies, and antibodies can be passed through breastmilk. Read more: MercyOne maternity experts support COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy Claim: Young and healthy people don't need to worry about COVID-19. Fact: While it's true that most people experience mild symptoms and recover, the virus can cause severe health risks and some people still have symptoms for months after they are infected. Individuals requiring hospitalizations today include increasing numbers of individuals ages 40 and up. Nationally, COVID-19 deaths have included people from all age groups. Read more COVID-19 vaccine facts here. Crowded hospitals can strain available resources and impact other people who need care, unrelated to COVID-19. This is why it is important to protect yourself and do your part so everyone can receive the care they need. Thankfully, I have the incredible communication pathologist and cognitive neuroscientist, Dr. Caroline Leaf, with us to share her 5 step process to managing our MINDS. She is here to shift the narrative about mental health and encourage us to put a stop to the shame spiral once and for all. Let's get the tools we need, stop repressing, start self-regulating, and clean up our mental mess! About The Guest:Dr. Caroline Leaf is a communication pathologist and cognitive neuroscientist with a Masters and PhD in Communication Pathology and a BSc Logopaedics, specializing in cognitive and metacognitive neuropsychology. Since the early 1980s she has researched the mind-brain connection, the nature of mental health, and the formation of memory. She was one of the first in her field to study how the brain can change (neuroplasticity) with directed mind input. During her years in clinical practice and her work with thousands of underprivileged teachers and students in her home country of South Africa and in the USA, she developed her theory (called the Geodesic Information Processing theory) of how we think, build memory, and learn, into tools and processes that have transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), learning disabilities (ADD, ADHD), autism, dementias and mental ill-health issues like anxiety and depression. She has helped hundreds of thousands of students and adults learn how to use their mind to detox and grow their brain to succeed in every area of their lives, including school, university, and the workplace. There is a lot of confusion when it comes to vaccines: when to get them, what to get and what to know about them? Dr. Dodds breaks down the common ubiquitous diseases that are necessary to vaccinate for and clears up some of the confusion we face when trying to make good decisions for our pets. Another point of confusion is what are titers and does your pet need one? A titer test is a blood test that measures the level of immune system proteins called antibodies.
