On October 26, 1825, the fate of New York City – and the entire United States – changed with the opening of the Erie Canal, a manmade waterway that connected the Hudson River to Lake Erie.It was the most significant engineering project of its time, linking the ocean to the nation's interior -- a 363-mile route from Albany to Lake Erie. Without even knowing where the Erie Canal is on a map of New York state, you could probably guess its course because of a row of cities which developed and prospered, almost in a westward line – including Utica, Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo. In some cases, these were modest-sized places like Schenectady or Rome that benefited financially from canal construction; in others, such as Syracuse (which was founded in the year 1820), the canal was chiefly responsible for its existence. However, it was also one of the most critical events in New York City's history, even though the entrance to the canal is approximately 150 miles north of New York Harbor. It essentially became the canal's gateway for freight traveling to any place inside the country or out to the world. As a result, New Yorkers quickly took advantage of the opportunities the canal offered.Today, we're celebrating the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Erie Canal by going straight to the source – in a conversation with Derrick Pratt, the Director of Education and Public Programs at the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse, New York.Visit our website for more images and other tales from New York City history. This episode was produced and edited by Kieran Gannon. Donate (no account necessary) | Subscribe (account required) Join Bryan Dean Wright, former CIA Operations Officer, as he dives into today's top stories shaping America and the world. In this Friday Headline Brief of The Wright Report, we cover the indictment of James Comey, a national DOJ investigation into George Soros, Pete Hegseth's extraordinary call for all generals to return to Virginia, Trump's warning to Democrats about pushing conservatives too far, and headline updates on tariffs, green energy, AI, and global flashpoints. Quick hits to set your radar for the weekend.   James Comey Indicted: The former FBI director faces charges of false statements and obstruction of justice. Trump pushed prosecutors to act before the statute of limitations expired, insisting Comey's role in Crossfire Hurricane was “a coup” against the elected government. Bryan argued, “James Comey deserves the death penalty… it would be a righteous and correct judgment.”   DOJ Targets Soros's Open Society Foundations: At least seven U.S. attorneys will probe Soros funding networks for alleged terrorism support, arson, fraud, and racketeering. Bryan compares the crackdown to federal efforts in the 1960s and 70s against the Weather Underground.   Pentagon Showdown Next Week: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth summoned every U.S. general and admiral worldwide to a meeting in Virginia as Trump demands a 20 percent cut in four-star officers. Politico reports many senior leaders are unhappy with the rebrand to the Department of War.   Trump Warns Democrats on Violence: After MSNBC and the John Brown Gun Club suggested ICE agents “deserved” recent attacks, Trump warned, “The Left better not get the Right energized because it won't be good for the Left.”   Turning Point Rejects Kimmel's ‘Apology': Spokesman Andrew Kolve said, “What we need is, ‘I'm sorry, I lied, I was wrong, and I won't do it again.' Otherwise… his political agenda is more important than the life of my friend who was just taken from us.”   Dallas Shooter Update: The killer searched “Charlie Kirk shot video” while planning his ICE attack, suggesting a copycat killing. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed he used Democrat-developed tracking apps to stalk ICE agents.   NYC Worker Punished for Helping ICE: A city staffer was retrained after reporting two criminal illegals to ICE, violating sanctuary laws that protect even convicted felons from deportation. Bryan called it “diabolical.” Tariff Cheaters and Whirlpool's Complaint: Appliance makers are under DOJ investigation for undervaluing imports to dodge tariffs, costing U.S. producers.   Green Energy Failures: California's $2.2 billion Ivanpah solar farm is shutting down after killing 6,000 birds annually. Bryan added, “That's wonderful news for the birds.”   AI Revolution Goes Federal: Elon Musk's Grok chatbot is now the U.S. government's official AI system, including for secret agencies, despite studies showing AI is unreliable and prone to lying.   Global Watch for the Weekend: Farmers furious at Argentina selling soybeans to China, European leaders ready to shoot down Russian aircraft, Britain exploring digital IDs, Tony Blair offering to run Gaza, and new medical studies on obesity, eye health, and aging.   "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." - John 8:32     Keywords: James Comey indictment Crossfire Hurricane, Trump DOJ Lindsey Halligan Erik Seibert, Comey Steele Dossier coup, DOJ Soros Open Society terrorism probe, Pete Hegseth Pentagon generals meeting, Trump warning Democrats violence ICE, John Brown Gun Club Hey Fascist Catch, Turning Point rejects Jimmy Kimmel apology, Dallas ICE shooter Charlie Kirk copycat, Kash Patel ICE tracking apps, NYC sanctuary laws ICE prisons, Whirlpool tariff cheating DOJ, Ivanpah solar farm shutdown bird deaths, Elon Musk Grok chatbot federal contract, Sam Altman AI smarter than humans, Argentina soybeans China, Europe NATO Russian jets, UK digital ID program, Tony Blair Gaza Strip, Greta Thunberg Gaza flotilla hacked ABBA

Amid a recent surge in politically charged violence across the United States, concerns are mounting over the deepening polarization and its root causes. Former White House Press Secretary and FOX News Contributor Ari Fleischer joins the Rundown to discuss the increasingly divisive political climate and what politicians and others can do to bring the temperature down. Then, Fleischer weighs in on President Trump's latest comments regarding the war in Ukraine, the New York City mayoral race, and Vice President Harris's book tour. The Trump administration recently announced that it will add a $100,000 fee for new H-1B visas, which are typically used by companies to fill specialized jobs with foreign workers. Besides early confusion about whether the new fee would apply to those already in the country, the plan also generated some pushback from the tech sector, which heavily relies on H-1 B visas. Labor Secretary Lori Chavez Deremer joins the Rundown to explain how the new policy will work and why the Trump administration believes this will benefit the American worker and help crack down on fraud and abuse. Ever felt like you're hustling so hard that you're slowly burning out—but you keep pushing because that's what entrepreneurs are “supposed” to do?In this episode of the Happy Hustle Podcast, I sit down with Jesse's Fireside Chat, and I share my personal story of burnout, reinvention, and building what I now call The Happy Hustle. We dive into the turning point in my life when I walked away from a high-flying tech startup career in New York City, with big VC backing, partnerships with giants like Microsoft and IBM, and a public exit on the horizon because deep down, I was empty. I was “successful” on paper but completely out of alignment: no sleep, no joy, and relationships falling apart. That decision to say “no” and pivot to a life in harmony was the seed that grew into The Happy Hustle, a bestselling book, top 0.5% podcast, and thriving community that now helps purpose-driven entrepreneurs systematically harmonize ambition and well-being.In this conversation, Jesse and I talk about what it really takes to recognize burnout, the lessons I learned rebuilding my life in Bangkok, and the tools I now share with others through masterminds, events, and the S.O.U.L.M.A.P.P.I.N' system. It's real, raw, and hopefully relatable for anyone who's grinding without fulfillment. Here are a few of the big takeaways you'll hear in this episode:Burnout is a signal, not a badge of honor. Recognizing the stress, anxiety, and overwhelm for what it is can be the first step toward change.Commit to the process, not the stats. I promised myself 200 podcast episodes, no matter who listened and that discipline became the foundation of the show's success.Balance requires intention. The S.O.U.L.M.A.P.P.I.N' framework is my personal operating system for staying aligned.Community is the cure for isolation. Masterminds and retreats aren't just events—they're powerful spaces to be vulnerable, connect, and grow with like-minded entrepreneurs.Good and done beats perfect and never finished. Whether it's publishing a book, launching a business, or making a big pivot, action trumps perfection every time.If you've ever wondered how to build a business without sacrificing your health, relationships, or joy, this episode will hit home. This week we present two classic stories from people who had hypotheses. Part 1: Teaching sixth grade science becomes much more difficult when Xochitl Garcia's students start hypothesizing that fire is alive. Part 2: When journalist John Rennie is assigned to cover an entomological society event where insects are served as food, he sees an opportunity to face his fear of bugs. Xochitl Garcia is the K-12 education program manager at Science Friday, where she focuses on supporting the inspiring efforts of educators (of all types) to engage students in science, engineering, math, and the arts. She is a former NYC school teacher, who specializes in sifting through random piles of junk that she insists are "treasures," to figure out cool ways for learners to explore scientific phenomena. You can find her making a mess in the name of science education at the Science Friday office, her house, with other educators...you get the picture. Update: Xochitl welcomed her baby (not fire) into the world on 1/1/2020. John has worked as a science editor, writer and lecturer for almost 40 years. Most recently, he was a deputy editor at Quanta Magazine. During his time as editor in chief at Scientific American, between 1994 and 2009, the magazine received two National Magazine Awards. The morning of Friday May 25, 1979, started out like just another day for Julie Patz; her husband Stan, a photographer; and their children, eight-year-old Shira, six-year-old Etan and two-year-old Ari. It was a busy morning. Julie ran a daycare out of her Soho loft at 113 Prince Street in New York City, and she was getting her own kids ready for the day and at the same time, preparing for the influx of kids who would be arriving soon. Shira didn’t want to roll out of bed, but Etan, who his family described as a sweet, loving and friendly boy, was excited to start the school day. Six-year-old Etan asked his mom if he could walk the two short blocks to the school bus stop alone - for the very first time. Since it was the last few weeks of the school year, his mom said that would be okay. Etan had a plan. He had a dollar in his pocket, which a neighborhood handyman had given him the day before when Etan helped him in his workshop. Etan was going to stop at the corner bodega at Prince and West Broadway, and buy a soda before getting on the bus. Julie walked Etan downstairs, and as she watched him walk down the street before going back upstairs, she told herself that it was only two blocks. That was the last time that Julie ever saw her son. This case became a huge story not just in New York but in the entire country. Etan Patz became the literal poster child for missing children, and Julie and her husband Stan were the living embodiment of every parent’s worst nightmare. What if your child disappeared one day, and you never found out what really happened to them? Forty-six years later, this case is still active. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In 1864, the American Civil War reached a critical juncture with Ulysses S. Grant’s Overland Campaign, including the brutal battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania, which claimed over 60,000 casualties, surpassing Gettysburg as the Americas’ deadliest clash. Abraham Lincoln faced a contentious re-election against George B. McClellan, while Confederate General Jubal Early’s troops came within five miles of the White House. Abolitionists pushed for emancipation, and desperate Confederate plots, like the attempt to burn New York City’s hotels, marked the war’s final months, culminating in Lincoln’s assassination by John Wilkes Booth in April 1865. Today’s guest is Scott Ellsworth, author of “Midnight on the Potomac: The Last Year of the Civil War, the Lincoln Assassination, and the Rebirth of America.” We explore how the staggering losses of 1864 shaped Lincoln’s strategy of attrition amid political uncertainty. These include lesser-known moments, like the Washington Arsenal explosion that killed 21 workers and Early’s near-invasion of Washington, D.C., which could have altered the war’s course. We also examines the November 1864 Confederate plot to destabilize New York and the conspiracy behind Lincoln’s assassination, including the unresolved question of Confederate government involvement. Reflecting on the war’s toll—over 620,000 dead and four million African-Americans freed but facing new struggles—Ellsworth illuminates how these events reshaped America’s identity.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
