A special treat for our podcast listeners! For years, Bullseye would close out each episode with an essay written by Jesse called The Outshot. It was an opportunity to show appreciation for the things he loves. For Bullseye's recent 25th anniversary tour, we thought we'd bring The Outshot back. In it, Jesse reflects on his time working in radio. This segment was recorded live at The PIT in New York City. Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Hello dear listener, Vanessa here.  First off, I want to let you know about a unique in-person event that Nocturne will be part of in the San Francisco Bay Area on Saturday, January 10th. Way back last January we released the episode, Impression, in which I followed artist, Nathanael Gray out to the wilds of the Point Reyes National Seashore, and chronicled his process of creating a large triptych painting of the ocean, in the dark.  If you'll be in the Bay Area on January 10th, I'd like to invite you to an intimate immersive experience in which we'll gather together from 6:30-9pm, listen to the episode, AND reveal the painting that Nathanael created for the first time, along with his newly created series, Ocean Fields. What's more, they'll be time to mingle in the lovely art/gathering space - A Loft of One's Own, in Emeryville, purchase yummy pop up food, amidst a newly created soundscape by Nocturne composer, and co-creator, Kent Sparling.  The event is free, but there are limited spots available, so RSVP is required. You can find event details at https://www.aloftofonesown.com/impression . And speaking of past episodes, I thought I'd drop an old holiday favorite into the feed as a rebroadcast. The episode is Tree People, from back in 2017, featuring Joel Shupack, who worked for years guarding Christmas Trees at night in NYC. Joel is highly entertaining as he recalls the ins and outs of this very unique nocturnal gig. So, whether you're revisiting this story or hearing it for the first time, I hope you enjoy it. There's a funny thing about Christmas in New York: In a city where most of the living trees are clumped together in just a few areas, right around Thanksgiving new clumps of trees start popping up all over this mostly concrete and asphalt setting. The tree stands sprinkled throughout the city create a festive air, but there's another dimension to the world of Christmas trees in New York City at night. Support Nocturne by donating at www.patreon.com/nocturnepodcast  Tree People Credits Nocturne is produced by Vanessa Lowe. Production help on this episode from Joel Shupack. You can find Joel Shupack's podcast, Square Mile, here. Art imitates life for Canadian actor Will Arnett (Arrested Development, BoJack Horseman) in “Is This Thing On?” — a new film about a middle-aged man at a crossroads. Will left Toronto for New York City right after school to pursue a career in acting. Instead of doing stand-up or sketch comedy, he studied the craft in hopes of becoming a dramatic actor. But then his obvious comedic ability steered him in a different direction. Will joins Tom Power to talk about circling back to that dream with his latest film, and why he tells director and co-star Bradley Cooper he loves him every day.

From Swiss banker to international bestselling author, Nathalie Botros shares how choosing self-love over external success became the catalyst for a life and business rooted in joy, authenticity, and impact. In this episode, I sit down with Nathalie Botros, known globally as The Bon Vivant Girl and a powerful Happiness Activator. Nathalie is an author, psychotherapist, mindset architect, and the Executive Editor of Ageless Living Magazine, where she curates stories that celebrate unapologetic living at every age. Our conversation begins with the magic of being together in person and the energy of women truly supporting women, not transactionally, but from a genuine place of “how can I help you.”Nathalie opens up about the pivotal moments that reshaped her life, from leaving a prestigious banking career in Switzerland to searching for fulfillment through fashion, success, and external validation. Despite checking all the “achievement” boxes, she found herself deeply unhappy. That awakening led her inward, where she began dismantling perfectionism, diet culture, and self-criticism, and replacing them with radical self-love. One simple mirror practice changed everything, transforming not only how she saw herself but how the world responded to her.We dive into the science of happiness, the myths women are conditioned to believe, and why self-love is the foundation of confident leadership, healthy relationships, and sustainable success. Nathalie also shares powerful insights for women entrepreneurs: why authenticity fuels growth, how setting boundaries protects your business, and why saying no, especially to unpaid labor, is an act of leadership, not selfishness. This episode is a reminder that true success means building a life where joy, impact, and alignment coexist. Nathalie's story will inspire you to stop chasing validation and start leading from a place of love, clarity, and self-worth. Tune in and let this conversation reset how you live, love, and lead.Chapters

SEASON 4 EPISODE 42: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump is drowning. Trump’s presidency is DROWNING. Yesterday, it was Republicans forcing a vote to extend Obamacare subsidies. Yesterday, 38 PERCENT approval in the Marist poll. Monday, his Rob Reiner tweet that appalled even the worst of MAGA. Tuesday, Susie Wiles. Friday, the Epstein Files, proving: no, history doesn’t repeat itself but yes, sometimes it LITERALLY rhymes. The Venezuela Wag-The-Dog episode collapsed before it started. It's about Narco-terrorism, whatever the eff that is? Oil? Stuff they stole? Nuh uh. For the first but not the last time we turn to Susie Wiles for the, uh, well, it’s a strange word to use about the Trump administration but here it is: TRUTH. "He wants to keep on blowing boats up until [president Nicolás] Maduro cries uncle. And people way smarter than me on that say that he will." She also single-handedly ended the just-forming prosecution of Jack Smith, and the vowed prosecution of Anthony Fauci, and the already-moribund prosecutions of James Comey and Letitia James and Adam Schiff and and and…All those cases will be thrown out of court. All of them. Because Susie Wiles is on tape saying quote “I don’t think he wakes up thinking about retribution but when there’s an opportunity he will go for it.” About Comey, quote: “I mean, people could think it does look vindictive. I can’t tell you why you shouldn’t think that.” Trump’s chief of staff. Confirming it’s retribution. And retribution means selective prosecution and selective prosecution is illegal and you not only get the case thrown out, if you’ve had to defend yourself or your reputation has been hurt, you can sue the government. And it’s on TAPE. So why did she say it? Why did she think she could get away with it? Because inside the White House even the Chief of Staff knows Trump is drowning. And they are beginning to distance themselves from him. B-Block (27:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Laura Ingraham doesn't know Niagara Falls is in Ontario or Ontario is in Canada or that Premier Doug Ford isn't an American. I make bad choices in Exes. And these MAGA idiots just cannot see anything in the world any more without trying to force it into their brain-dead templates: it MUST be political and it MUST be an attack on Trump. New York City councilwoman Vickie Paladino "knows" the terrible shooting was an attack on Republicans at Brown University, and the moronic troll "Cat Turd" is sure they're wiping the shooter's social media history clean (which is an idea he should execute). C-Block (37:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I'm off by only four days from the exact anniversary, but it is now 42 years since I first met and interviewed Trump and I know most of us who knew him before knew he was nuts, but I must give myself credit. An hour after that meeting I was asking a colleague "what the eff is wrong with THAT guy?"See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our guest for today's episode is one of the most exciting sprinters in the world right now. Julien Alfred is the reigning Olympic champion in the 100m, a World Indoor champion in the 60m, and the athlete who is rewriting history for St. Lucia on the biggest stages in track. On February 1st, 2026, Julien will return to The Armory in New York City to headline the women's 60m at the Millrose Games — the same track where she ran a meet record back in 2024 before going on to win world and Olympic gold. Our conversation with her isn't just about medals or times; it's about what comes after the breakthrough year and how you learn to carry success without letting it crush you.Julien opens up about navigating pressure, expectations, and loneliness at the top and about growing up fast in St. Lucia, leaving home to chase a dream in Jamaica, Texas, and beyond, and learning how to protect her mental health while still pushing her limits. We talk about trust — in her coach Edrick Floreal, in the process, and in herself — and why 2026 feels less about proving something to the world and more about rediscovering joy in the sport she loves.____________Host: Anderson Emerole | @atkoeme on InstagramGuest: Julien Alfred | @julien.alfred on InstagramProduced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr on Instagram____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSNOMIO: Made with 80% broccoli sprout juice, 15% lemon juice, and 5% sugar, Nomio activates your body's natural defense systems to reduce lactate, speed recovery, and enhance muscle adaptation. Eric Stine: The Power of Saying Yes

    7:47 Conversations

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 18, 2025 38:04

In a world obsessed with speed, optimization, certainty, and AI-driven answers, this episode of Gratitude Through Hard Times offers a necessary pause. Chris Schembra sits down with Eric Stine, CEO of Sitecore, for a deeply human conversation about leadership, belonging, gratitude, and the courage to say yes before you feel ready. This is not a tactical episode about growth metrics or technology stacks—it's an exploration of what it means to lead, live, and connect in a time when instinct is being outsourced and humanity is at risk of being optimized away.Eric reflects on a 25-year career across some of the world's most influential enterprise technology companies, but reframes success through a different lens. Rather than crediting restraint or perfection, he points to saying yes as the defining strategy of his life, yes to unfamiliar roles, yes to reinvention, yes to creativity, fatherhood, philanthropy, and Broadway. Along the way, he opens up about imposter syndrome, those quiet moments of doubt that surface even at the highest levels of leadership, and why authenticity—not certainty—is what ultimately creates trust and psychological safety for teams. The conversation reaches back to Eric's eighth-grade years, when he felt like an outsider searching for his people. Theater became the place where he learned that difference wasn't something to hide, but something to bring forward, a lesson that continues to shape how he builds culture today. That theme of belonging becomes especially resonant in today's age of fragmentation and loneliness, where many people feel disconnected not because they lack opportunity, but because they lack spaces where they can show up fully as themselves.Midway through the episode, Eric answers the signature gratitude question, offering heartfelt thanks to his father, Mark, whose belief in living authentically influenced everything from Eric's leadership philosophy to a Tony Award win on Father's Day. The moment grounds the conversation in gratitude, not as sentiment, but as a force that shapes identity, values, and legacy across generations. This episode is especially important now because it confronts a growing cultural tension: while AI can deliver answers at unprecedented speed, it cannot deliver wisdom, belonging, or meaning. Eric draws a clear distinction between systems of record and systems of engagement, arguing that the future belongs to leaders and organizations that pair data with instinct, scale with empathy, and efficiency with humanity. In an era where people are burning out not just from work, but from hiding who they are, this conversation offers a different model, one rooted in community, peer-driven recognition, and shared accountability rather than control.Ultimately, The Power of Saying Yes is a reminder that culture cannot be engineered from the top down and growth cannot be achieved through optimization alone. Culture comes from community. Belonging comes from permission. And the most meaningful paths in life are rarely the safest ones. This episode invites listeners to slow down, embrace impermanence, and choose the more interesting path, not because it's easy, but because it's human.10 Key TakeawaysSaying yes creates momentum.Progress, growth, and meaning often come from leaning in before you feel ready—not from waiting for certainty. Authenticity is a leadership advantage, not a liability. When leaders model vulnerability, they unlock psychological safety and better performance across teams. Imposter syndrome doesn't disappear—it becomes a compass.Doubt is often a signal that you're stretching into something meaningful. Finding “your people” changes everything.Belonging fuels confidence, creativity, and resilience—whether in theater, business, or family. Gratitude is a strategic tool, not a soft one.Recognizing people for their impact on others builds trust, loyalty, and culture at scale. Culture cannot be built top-down.Leaders can only create the conditions; community does the building. AI needs humans in the loop.Data delivers insight, but instinct and empathy deliver relevance. Impermanence creates meaning.Moments matter more when we know they won't last—whether on stage, at work, or around the dinner table. Accountability is empowering when framed as ownership. We don't work in isolation—we work in ecosystems where shared responsibility drives excellence. The best life is an AND life, not an OR life.Passion and profit. Speed and care. Technology and humanity. Both can be true.Eric Stine BioEric Stine is the Chief Executive Officer of Sitecore, driving the company's vision and strategy to unlock business value for clients by empowering them to create compelling digital experiences. Eric was previously Chief Operating Officer, where he led all customer-facing functions. Before Sitecore, Eric was Chief Executive Officer of Elemica. Chris pushes back hard, calling it "pure PR sizzle" that's designed for Instagram photos rather than operational scalability. The debate gets heated as they discuss whether New York City is the right testing ground. ⏩ Tune in for the full episode here: https://youtu.be/RjBUyfWgxzY #Target #TargetSoho #retailinnovation #storeconcept #experientialretail #retailstrategy #omnichannel

Pittsburgh Tomorrow recently placed a dog-friendly, holiday billboard in New York City's Times Square, inviting the nearly 400,000 people who pass by every day to consider moving to Pittsburgh. While some locals say they don't love it, head of storytelling Caroline Fisher says the city needs to take big swings if we want Pittsburgh's stagnant population to grow. Host Megan Harris asks about the cost, the mission, and how they're feeling about people's reaction to the ad. Scrooged, a modern 80s retelling of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" stars Bill Murray as a cynical, mean-spirited TV executive who finally learns the true meaning of Christmas, but its production was marred with difficulties. After a four-year hiatus following the overwhelming success of Ghostbusters, Bill Murray returned to acting for this passion project. But before signing on, Murray literally tore apart the original script with screenwriters Mitch Glazer and Michael O'Donoghue to completely rework it, particularly the romantic subplot and family scenes. What followed was one of Hollywood's most notorious productions. Director Richard Donner and Murray clashed constantly throughout the three-month shoot in New York City and Hollywood. Murray felt Donner rushed through takes and kept pushing him to perform louder and broader, while Donner struggled with Murray's improvisational style. The $32 million production took a physical toll as well. Murray worked on dusty, smoky sets filled with fake snow that made him cough up blood. Co-star Carol Kane accidentally split his lip so badly during a scene that filming had to stop for several days. Co-writer O'Donoghue was equally miserable, claiming less than half the original script survived. The film's iconic ending speech was almost entirely improvised by Murray, who went off-script and received a spontaneous ovation from the crew. O'Donoghue was less than impressed, but the moment became one of cinema's most memorable holiday monologues. Scrooged adds layers of comedy and modern critique to Dickens' original text, showcasing not just the spirit of Christmas but a satirical look at the entertainment industry, and the commercialization of Christmas. What if great communication isn't about saying more, but saying what actually matters? Sarah Kissko Hersh has spent more than two decades inside agencies, brands, and leadership rooms where words carry weight. She grew up in Indiana, built her career in Chicago and New York, and learned early that clarity, not polish, is what moves people forward. Along the way, she worked across architecture, design, travel, luxury, and global firms, often stepping into messy moments where teams felt stuck and leaders felt unsure of what to say next. What started as a traditional PR career slowly evolved into something deeper. Sarah saw how often people were promoted into leadership without being taught how to manage. How communication broke down not because of bad intentions, but because of fear, burnout, and lack of direction. And how simple, honest language could reset entire teams. Today, Sarah is the founder of Type A, a communications and leadership consultancy based outside New York City. Her work focuses on helping people get unstuck, communicate directly without losing kindness, and lead with clarity in moments that matter. In this conversation, Sarah and Justin talk about what PR really is and what it is not. Why simple stories still win. How bad managers can teach you just as much as good ones. Why constraints often unlock better ideas. And how platforms like LinkedIn are less about self-promotion and more about learning to name what you already know. For leaders, creatives, and communicators, this episode is about making work feel lighter without making it shallow. About learning while you laugh. And about remembering that the most effective communication is deeply human. What You'll Learn + Clarity beats complexity. Simple, honest language builds trust faster than polished noise. + PR is about truth, not spin. Good communication starts with what's real. + Leadership is learned. Managing people requires skills most of us were never taught. + Fear keeps teams stuck. Naming it is often the first step forward. + Constraints spark creativity. Less can actually lead to better ideas. Why It Matters Sarah's perspective reminds us that communication is not a soft skill. It is leadership in action. Whether you manage a team, tell stories for a living, or simply want to be understood at work, this episode shows how clarity, humor, and care can change the way people listen and respond. Listen Now If this conversation made you laugh, think, or see your work a little differently, share it with someone who leads, writes, or communicates for a living. Follow Design Of wherever you listen, and keep building work that helps people understand what truly matters.

In this final episode of Season 8, you'll get a powerful, inspiring discussion on defending the nonprofit sector amid political intimidation and retrenchment, with a call to action for funders to act with courage rather than caution. The message is clear: a strong democracy depends on a strong, well-resourced nonprofit workforce, and philanthropy must choose to lead boldly in this moment. Host Rusty Stahl, Fund the People's President and CEO, speaks with Dr. Sherece West-Scantlebury, President and CEO of the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation, as part of the Defend Nonprofits, Defend Democracy series. Reflecting on more than 30 years in philanthropy and her forthcoming retirement at the end of 2025, West-Scantlebury offers a candid assessment of what has — and hasn't — worked in the sector. She traces the evolution of the foundation's equity-centered mission, its focus on working families who are struggling in Arkansas, and how COVID reinforced the urgency of addressing low wages, systemic inequities, and the root causes of poverty.Throughout the conversation, she challenges philanthropy to confront the real costs of sustaining a healthy civil society and to move beyond outdated, restrictive funding models.Dr. West-Scantlebury also details the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation's commitments to capacity building, nonprofit workforce pay and benefits, leader wellness, and innovative approaches such as enterprise capital. She argues that investing in people — through living wages, flexible funding, wellness stipends, and long-term balance-sheet investments — is essential to nonprofit sustainability and impact. The episode closes with a powerful discussion on defending the nonprofit sector amid political intimidation and retrenchment, with West-Scantlebury urging funders to act with courage rather than caution. Jennifer Araoz alleged that Jeffrey Epstein began grooming her when she was just 14 years old, after one of his female recruiters approached her outside her New York City high school. Araoz claimed the recruiter slowly built trust, inviting her to Epstein's mansion under the guise of mentorship and financial assistance. Over several visits, Araoz says she was manipulated into giving Epstein massages while wearing only her underwear, and eventually, those encounters escalated into full sexual assaults. She described being paid hundreds of dollars after each incident, reinforcing the transactional and coercive nature of the abuse.By the time she was 15, Araoz alleges that Epstein forcibly raped her during one of those visits. She recalls being paralyzed with fear, crying and begging him to stop, while he overpowered her. Afterward, he handed her money and continued to manipulate her into silence, using his power and the threat of isolation to keep her from speaking out. Araoz later dropped out of school due to the emotional toll of the abuse. She eventually filed a lawsuit against Epstein's estate, his employees, and also named individuals and institutions she believed enabled the abuse by failing to protect her. Her account underscores the deliberate, calculated way Epstein preyed on underage girls—using female recruiters, financial coercion, and institutional neglect to shield himself from consequences for years.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:New Jeffrey Epstein accuser: He raped me when I was 15Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

In this week's episode Vince discusses how in NYC, urgency is selective: buyers remain cautious, sellers are measured, yet competitively priced homes in the right buildings and neighborhoods are moving quickly, revealing pockets of renewed momentum beneath a seemingly steady surface. Meanwhile, Connecticut shows a different form of urgency—driven by lifestyle migrations, limited inventory, and strong demand for turnkey properties in desirable towns and school districts. The moment the right home hits the market, competition surges.   Together, these markets create a regional ecosystem where urgency does not disappear; it simply shifts. Understanding where that urgency is concentrated—and how pricing, product, and buyer psychology shape it—has become essential for consumers, brokers, and investors navigating the corridor between city and suburbs.   Filmed at Brown Harris Stevens' Studio 1873, Part of the Mastery of Real Estate (MORE) Network.   Subscribe: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/talking-new-york-real-estate-with-vince-rocco/id1645541166   Connect with Vince Rocco: https://www.bhsusa.com/real-estate-agent/vince-rocco   Brown Harris Stevens is one of the largest privately owned real estate brokerages in the country, with more than 40 offices across four states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Florida.   https://bhsusa.com/   #realestatebuyers #nycrealestate #realestate #vincerocco #TNYRE #theeverset #roadwaymoving #newyorkrealestate #nyc

Tune in here to this Wednesday's edition of the Brett Winterble Show! Brett kicks off the program by talking about faith in uncertain times and his alarm over rising global chaos and political radicalism. He opens with a message of belief and resilience, saying he’s confident things ultimately turn out right if people hold onto faith, while warning that powerful narratives and extremists are competing for public attention. Brett then pivots to what he sees as a troubling political moment, focusing on the election of Zohran Mamdani as New York City’s next mayor and arguing that Mamdani is deeply unfit to lead during a period marked by terrorism and antisemitism worldwide. We’re joined by Sandy Moyer from the Republican National Hispanic Assembly of North Carolina to talk about Hispanic outreach and bridging conservative values with political engagement. Sandy explains RNHA-NC’s mission to connect with Hispanic communities across the state and challenge what she calls a long-standing messaging disconnect. She shares her personal story as a second-generation American, emphasizing gratitude for opportunity, legal immigration, and the responsibilities that come with citizenship. Sandy notes that many Hispanic voters hold deeply conservative views centered on faith, family, free markets, and public safety, but are often overlooked or mischaracterized in political conversations.
