My guest today is Mikaela de la Myco. I was drawn to the way she presents herself as a mother in the psychedelic space through her platform, Mama de la Myco. I had every intention in having a conversation with her about psychedelic parenting. However, I threw out all my questions out the window and followed Mikaela's energy; it was clear that Mikaela had so much to share with us about centring mothers, women, and ingenious voices in the psychedelic movement. She lends us a perspective around how the psychedelic mainstream movement is falling short, and the reality of how indigenous people are treated in the psychedelic industry. In addition, we talk about how mushrooms are helping mothers through the challenges of the postpartum period, and how psychedelics might be useful for families.Mikaela is currently pouring into the Mushrooms and Moms survey with support from Dr. Jim Fadiman and the Microdosing Institute. This project is surveying mothers and birthing people who consumed psilocybin mushrooms throughout their motherhood and parenting journey in order to accumulate a body of evidence for effects of psilocybin on birthing people, women and their children. Imagine a world where you get to work in your natural strengths most of the time. To be energized and fulfilled according to your skillset and your natural strengths would be a dream come true. Chris Ediger introduces us to the 70:30 Principle. This gives leaders insight for understanding  why they are sometimes drained within their job and at other times energized. It gives a practical framework to adjust to be able to have a healthy balance.Chris gives a great exercise to try. On one side of a piece of paper write down a list of your natural strengths - those things that bring you energy and are your "sweet spots". On the other side of the page, write down those things that are draining - those things that you have to really work at, that are not natural to you. Now take inventory of how much of your work day is spent on each. The goal is to spend about 70% of your time in your strengths and unconscious competencies, with only about 30% in those things that are not natural to you. Now, don't go and quit your job if this is off balance. Instead, start making a plan as to how you can start making adjustments to get in a place where you are working in the areas that most suit you. It may be that if you work on a team, you all will be able to do this exercise together and move around responsibilities to make sure each member's strengths are really being maximized.Chris Ediger mentioned that he loves working with craft breweries. The industry faces the daunting challenge of providing high-quality care to an aging and increasingly ailing population. By 2025, chronic diseases will affect 49 percent of Americans, and by 2030, 21 percent of Americans will be over 65. Furthermore, the healthcare system is poised to accommodate an additional 30 million new patients by 2025. One of my favorite things we do at Wife Teacher Mommy with creating exciting and engaging resources and activities for students. Because let's be real, there are some concepts that students need to learn, but aren't engaging enough. We have a real treat for you today that will give you some fun ideas in the classroom. On today's episode, I'm talking with Teresa Kwant about gamification in the classroom and escape rooms. Teresa Kwant is a former teacher turned teacher-author business owner. She graduated from the University of Utah in 2009 with a degree in elementary education. After graduation, she taught 6th grade in an elementary school for 5 years. Along the way, she found TPT and started dabbling in product creation. She now creates full-time and specializes in gamification in the classroom with products like escape rooms and game shows with PowerPoint and Google Slides.Teresa is a pro at gamification and shares so much knowledge on gamification in the class room on this episode. Gamification in the classroom is when you integrate game elements into a learning environment. It takes an experience that students might have a hard time staying engaged with—like a whole-class lesson—and makes it more engaging. Teresa has done this with escape rooms.Students learn best when they can get engaged in the activity and lesson. What better way to break away from the classic, “sit-n-listen” learning environment than with a classroom escape room? Escape are an engaging and unique lesson that students will learn from. Escape room classrooms teach:CreativityProblem-solvingCommunication and teamworkAnd so much more!If you're looking for new classroom actives, don't miss this episode! And if you love what you hear from Teresa today… be sure to join us at E&R where she will be speakingGamification in the classroom is the incorporation of game elements into a learning environment. When implemented well, it takes an experience that participants might otherwise not find fun—like a whole-class lesson—and makes it more engaging!Head over to the show notes: https://www.wifeteachermommy.com/podcast/gamification-in-the-classroom/In this episode on escape rooms and gamification in the classroom, I discuss:What gamification in the classroom is and what it looks likeWhat an escape room activity is and how to do it in the classroomTeresa's history and how she began creating escape room resourcesThe benefits of doing engaging and active lesson plans in the classroomHow an escape room activity works in the classroomResources mentioned:Join the Wife Teacher Mommy Club!Teresa Kwant WebsiteTeresa Kwant FreebieWife Teacher Mommy: Mentioned on Podcast Amazon List

As savage-minded entrepreneurs, we have to think beyond the norm and push boundaries. Nothing new happens unless we do. This may take the form of pursuing methods or ideas others have dismissed or perhaps not even considered. It may take the form of ignoring those who say it won't work. For an entrepreneur, rejecting the expected is integral to life and goals.Eager to discuss this further, I (Kyle) interviewed Matt Speer, the Founder of LIV Indy, and the Founder and CEO of Property Management Advisory (LivLabs.io). Matt shared how he's used not-so-ordinary ideas to accomplish goals throughout his life, and now is improving the technology that is sorely lacking in the world of real estate and property management. Matt related stories of avoiding working in the campus bookstore, the chip on the shoulder mindset, values to determine passion, and having hard conversations.“But when it's your own vision–you know, when it's just an idea and it becomes a reality–and then you're selling that product... That tendency to get led into or follow the delicious temptations of information, data, and stories that bear a family resemblance to the project you're working on, but are not quite on track. The stories that are fascinating and feed your mind, but don't necessarily move your project any closer to a conclusion. Like you, I'm up against the challenge of the rabbit hole too. But instead of seeing rabbit holes as something that derails us, perhaps it's possible to view them as gifts.  In today's episode, I share a process that accommodates the pleasure of following where the rabbit hole leads and supports the time frame you typically have to do your work. ResourcesThe shape of notesApps to match your note-taking styleReferencing software reviewedConnect with AlexLinkedInWebsiteWatch the podcast on YouTube➡️ Join WriteCME Pro for ongoing professional development ⭐ Review the podcast

In this episode, we're going to talk about a Twitter thread that went viral. Dr. Liz Norell's thread on her night class now has more than 800,000 views. On it, Norell talks about ice breakers, her liquid syllabus, ungrading, a "punchy" Word document syllabus she created the night before, and communicating the message of care and belonging.  When it comes to ungrading, Norell tells students that learning is change happening in their minds, something that you can't always see. "And so my hope is that by the end of the semester...students really embrace ungrading, because I find, contrary to my own expectations, they do more work because they care, because they're interested, and they're not doing it for a grade." Additionally, Norell explains that a delightful consequence of ungrading is that students learn how to self-advocate and take ownership of the work they've done. From ungrading to a liquid syllabus to bringing snacks to class, Norell's main goal is  communicating a message of care and belonging to every person in the classroom.  Recommended Resources:Liz Norell's ResourcesThe viral Twitter thread: Last night, a professor walked into a night class for the first time since 2016. No one becomes successful overnight. People around us simply seem to work and work. Eventually, they succeed. Consider Brecht Palombo, the man behind the investing weekly #AltReports. In business, he has achieved great success. But his life wasn't a smooth ascent into a trajectory of achievement; rather, it was marked by many twists and turns. Brecht always worked three jobs but was never good with money. He got to the point where he got eviction notices for not paying rent and had a car repossessed when he was 21. He was good at making money but had no idea how to manage it. Brecht then decided to get into real estate. In 2008, his traditional real estate sales went down from $220,000 to $19,000, doing the same amount of work. He had all different kinds of expenses and had tons of debts with no revenue at all for a couple of years. After a year and a half, he had nothing. He got to the point where he filed for bankruptcy and learned tremendous humility as he struggled through the ignominyof business debts and foreclosures. So much that he had no choice but to seek shelter from his mother and his wife and children to cope with the predicament he was in. To get out of the situation, Brecht looked for a way to earn moneyagain, where he learned to sell data. In 2009, he had his first software product even though he didn't have a technical background. Despite the company's success, there came a time when he lost interest in talking about the same topics, so he decided to sell the software as a service (SaaS) app he had spent the better part of a decade developing. His company was making $300,000 in the last couple of years before he sold the business. The best part was that he was spending very little time working in the business. After the exit, Brecht and his family drove off with no schedule and camped, helping him recenter his life and making him feel more worthy and successful.Brecht's journey as an entrepreneur and investor has not been without its share of obstacles, but he has met each one head-on and emerged stronger on the other side. This has encouraged him to take a more thoughtful approach to life and work in pursuit of what matters most. That despite any obstacles you encounter in life, like seeking shelter from your parents as an adult, it is fine as long as you know how to navigate yourself from there. Brecht engages Jamie in a conversation rich in anecdotes of business hardships and the lessons that may be learned from them. These include dealing with cash-flow issues, facing an unanticipated economic slump, and so on.Quotes:“Instead of just getting up and grinding away the computer every day, I have to be much more deliberate in what I was doing. I would have to only do the things that mattered. That allowed other people to do what they could to run the business, which was a major letting go period for me.” "I haven't been able to get over the feeling that now I have more money than I've ever had before, it could all disappear in a moment. It has never left me.”Brecht talks about his new business venture #AltReportsSelling the business, Distressed Pro, which he built 12 years agoThe defining moment that led Brecht to make a pivotal change of selling his businessDespite the success of his business, Brecht reflects that he struggled with depressionSelling everything they owned and unpacked into a van and trailer with three kids and a dog, and set off on a 15-month trip. The 15 month-trip that dramatically transformed his mindset and businessHitting a plateau in the businessMoving into his mother with his wife and kids to seek shelter from a business slumpSelling his business in 15 days for more than seven figuresMoney alone doesn't bring you happinessBrecht discusses his first business when he was 15 years old How Brecht's procrastination, which plagued him in his early 20s, was a source of greatdifficulty for himBrecht's poor financial management in his early 20s and how he overcame itThat time when Brecht got into the real estate businessThe ups and downs he experienced first-hand as a realtor How Brecht confronted enormous expenses and business debts with no income at all as a realtorConfronted with the prospect of insolvency and foreclosure, he thought back to the period when he relocated his family—wife and two children—into his mother's home. How The 4-Hour Workweek book by Timothy Ferriss led him to his AHA! momentHow Brecht transitioned from being an auctioneer to a full-time non-technical software entrepreneur.Brecht recalls the birth of his podcast and that time when he got his first paying sign-up for $80Getting hacked, which shut off the whole site The Hustle Culture The power of simple and clear systems that are easily duplicatedThe importance of having competent people who can execute the way you need things to be executedBrecht's system approach: Eliminate - Automate – Delegate – ImproveThe driving force of financial securityHow being present is the most effective thing you can doThe one thing most people misunderstand about BrechtA piece of advice for his 18-year-old self Sharing a cup of coffee with Ben FranklinThat one meal to eat for the rest of his lifeBusiness struggles or challenges in his business right now #AltReports: A fun, irreverent, daily newsletter for investors.Books and ResourcesThe 4-Hour Workweek by Timothy FerrissTurnaround Management Association: TMAAmerican Bankruptcy InstituteConnect with BrechtLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brecht/Twitter: https://twitter.com/brechtifyWebsite: https://brechtpalombo.com/Podcast: https://bootstrappedwithkids.com/author/brecht/If you want to know more about #AltReports and the services they offer, you may visit https://altreports.com/Support Labrador LendingWEBSITE: https://labradorlending.com/LINKEDIN: https://www.linkedin.com/company/71512077/admin/FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/labradorlendingTWITTER: https://twitter.com/LabLendLLCINSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/labradorlendingllc/YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChYrpCUlqFYLy4HngRrmU9QTIKTOK: https://www.tiktok.com/@labradorlendingllc?lang=enConnect with JamieLINKEDIN: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamie-bateman-5359a811/TWITTER: https://twitter.com/batemanjamesINSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/batemanjames11/Investment OpportunityAre you an accredited investor interested in monthly cash flow from an investment backed by physical real estate? Our income fund-- which is uncorrelated to publicly traded stocks and bonds--invests in first-lien mortgage notesdiversified by geography, property value, and borrower type. BIO: Ana Melikian, Ph.D., is an optimist who had to overcome two bouts with cancer to learn that pursuing happiness is a fallacy. STORY: When Ana started her online coach business, she was looking for the quickest way to find clients. This hunger made her fall for two marketing strategies that never worked. The first was a search engine that promised to be better than Google, and the other was publishing a chapter in a book. LEARNING: Marketing does not get you clients; building relationships does. Have both sales and marketing departments.   “Marketing will not get you the client. Building relationships will.”Ana Melikian  Guest profilehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/anamelikian/ (Ana Melikian, Ph.D.,) is an optimist who had to overcome two bouts with cancer to learn that pursuing happiness is a fallacy. To choose happiness is a much more powerful strategy to tap into our highest human potential. Either by working with leaders and their teams, or other coaches and consultants, Ana supports her clients to break through their mindset limitations and upgrade their psychological operating systems so that they achieve better results than ever in work and life while enjoying the process. Worst investment everWhen Ana moved to the United States from Portugal, she had to reinvent herself professionally. She decided to be an online coach, so she built a website hoping that people would find it. A salesperson contacted her and told her about this search engine that was going to be the next Google. The salesperson showed Ana these really cool and well-done features on the search engine. They did a demo for Ana and convinced her that if she invested in the search engine, she'd secure a permanent placement on page one of search results. Ana signed up believing she'd get more clients than she could handle. She didn't get a single client. The same thing happened to Ana again. Someone else contacted her online with an idea to write and publish a book that would position her as an expert and get clients quickly. The company would just interview Ana, put everything together, and then publish a chapter in a book with her photo. Ana thought, okay, why not? So she put more money into it, and they fulfilled their promise and published her in an excellent chapter. But when Ana received the book, she realized that the other people featured were not the kind of people she wanted to be associated with. So the books stayed in a box somewhere in storage in Ana's house. Lessons learnedMarketing does not get you clients. It's a way of creating awareness. Focus on building relationships if you want to get clients. You need both marketing and sales departments. Andrew's takeawaysYou will fail if you think that just doing marketing will bring you clients. The sales process (guiding a customer through the buying process) is different from marketing. Actionable adviceDon't wait for people to come and work with you. Create opportunities to have conversations and build relationships. Today on the As Told By Nomads podcast, Khary Lazarre-White joins Tayo to talk about racial narratives in the US and his organization, The Brotherhood Sister Sol. The pair opens this conversation by introducing the audience to the lack of funding present in minority communities. Given this lack of funding, in combination with familiar stereotypes and narratives regarding black intelligence and athletic ability, for example, it's no wonder that young children in black and LatinX communities are discouraged from breaking free from the boxes they were confined to. Khary took it upon himself, however, to create The Brotherhood Sister Sol, a nonprofit that helps young black and LatinX Americans claim the power of their history, identity, community, and education. In spite of fighting a rather uphill battle, Khary is incredibly passionate about helping children take back their own narratives. It's time to start debunking the common misconceptions that black people only have futures in music or athletics, that they're violent, that they're drug addicts, etc. After all, the perpetuation of these notions obscure black and LatinX histories, generational trauma, futures, and the link between poverty and violence. Khary goes on to talk about the American obsession with crime, and how the sheer volume of crime series on TV and racist news propaganda criminalizes the young black man in the American psyche. Through Khary's organization, Brotherhood Sister Sol, he hopes to help black and LatinX transcend the boundaries that have been created for them.
