Does Light Tire and Does It Prove the Big Bang Wrong? Join Hugh Ross in this News of the Day episode of Stars, Cells, and God. Hugh describes a paper published by a computer scientist Lior Shamir who claims his statistical analysis of redshifts of distant galaxies indicates light may lose energy as it travels through space and that if light indeed gets tired a major revision of the standard big bang model is in order. Shamir's claimed effect may be a statistical artifact akin to Bible code claims. Tired light is just one of several systematic effects that could explain the statistical bias discovered by Shamir. Direct distance measurements have affirmed that galaxy redshifts are entirely explained by cosmic expansion out to 470 million light years. If light indeed tires, images of distant quasars and blazars should be blurry. They are not. If light indeed tires, the cosmic microwave background radiation should cool at a different rate than what astronomers observe. The apparent maturity of some galaxies in the early universe does not challenge the standard big bang model if, as the Webb telescope has affirmed, many of the universe's first stars are hundreds of times more massive than the Sun. I'm your host, Anna, and today we'll be covering a range of exciting topics, from SpaceX's clash with the FAA to new discoveries in galaxy clusters. Plus, I have a couple of stories on how you can help contribute to science projects in progress. Get ready for a cosmic journey through the headlines that are shaping our understanding of the universe.Highlights:- SpaceX vs. FAA: In a bold move, SpaceX is vehemently rejecting the Federal Aviation Administration's recent allegations of launch requirement violations. The FAA has slapped the company with a hefty $633,000 fine. But SpaceX isn't taking this lying down. The space giant argues that the FAA is falling behind the rapidly evolving commercial spaceflight industry. They claim the agency is struggling to keep up with the pace of innovation and is misallocating its limited resources. SpaceX's vice president for legal affairs, David Harris, sent a strongly worded letter to congressional committees overseeing the FAA. In it, he asserted that the company forcefully rejects the FAA's assertion that it violated any regulations. This clash highlights the growing tensions between traditional regulatory bodies and the new wave of private space companies pushing the boundaries of exploration. As the commercial space race heats up, it seems the rulebook might need some updating to match the speed of progress.- NASA's Next-Gen Eclipse Mapping: NASA has taken eclipse mapping to a whole new level. With their latest development, they've created a process that generates incredibly accurate eclipse maps by incorporating lunar topography data from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. This is a game changer for both astronomers and eclipse enthusiasts. Traditionally, eclipse calculations assumed a smooth, symmetrical moon and didn't account for Earth's varying elevations. But now NASA's new method factors in the moon's actual cratered and uneven surface, as well as the true altitude of locations on Earth. The result? We can now see the real-time varying shape of the moon's shadow as it passes over our planet. It turns out the shadow isn't a smooth oval as previously thought. It's more like a potato. This irregularity is caused by the mountains and valleys along the edge of the moon's disk, which can affect the timing and duration of totality by several seconds. This level of detail is unprecedented and provides valuable information for scientific studies and eclipse predictions. It's a testament to how far our understanding and technology have come, allowing us to map these celestial events with extraordinary precision.- Chandra X-ray Observatory Discovery: In a cosmic dance of hot gas and galaxies, NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory has made a fascinating discovery in the Zwicky 8338 galaxy cluster. Located about 670 million light years from Earth, this cluster is home to an extraordinary phenomenon: two streams of superheated gas crossing each other. This celestial spectacle involves a comet-like tail of hot gas trailing behind a galaxy, spanning an impressive 1.6 million light years. As the galaxy plows through the cluster, it's leaving behind this enormous tail, which has split into two distinct streams. What makes this discovery particularly intriguing is that it's not the only set of tails in the cluster. Astronomers had previously observed a shorter pair of tails from a different galaxy nearby. The crossing of these gas streams is providing valuable insights into how cosmic collisions can shape the structure of galaxy clusters and potentially trigger the formation of new stars. This chaotic landscape of galaxies, superheated gas, and shock waves is a result of two galaxy clusters colliding to create Zwicky 8338. It's a cosmic laboratory that's helping astronomers understand the complex dynamics at play in these massive celestial structures.- Citizen Science and Light Pollution: In an effort to combat the growing issue of light pollution, researchers have developed an innovative and cost-effective solution. They've created an inexpensive sensor designed to track light pollution on a global scale. This project isn't just about scientific data collection; it's a call to action for citizen scientists worldwide. The sensors, which can be built using readily available components for under $65, are capable of measuring night sky brightness caused by artificial light. By encouraging people around the world to construct and install these devices, the researchers hope to create a comprehensive, real-time map of light pollution. This grassroots approach serves a dual purpose. Not only will it provide valuable data for scientists, but it also aims to raise public awareness about the detrimental effects of light pollution, from disrupting ecosystems and wildlife behavior to interfering with astronomical observations. The impact of excessive artificial light is far-reaching. By participating in this project, citizen scientists can contribute to our understanding of light pollution spread and help inform strategies to mitigate its effects. It's a powerful example of how technology and community engagement can come together to address a global environmental challenge. After New Horizons' successful flyby of Pluto in 2015, scientists were eager to extend the mission but faced the challenge of finding a suitable target in the vast, unexplored Kuiper Belt. For nearly ten years, astronomers scoured the outer solar system, developing new tools and techniques along the way. They used ground-based telescopes, citizen science efforts, and even the Hubble Space Telescope in their quest. Finally, in 2014, they struck gold with the discovery of Arrokoth. This small, oddly shaped world became New Horizons' second flyby target, visited on New Year's Day 2019. The hunt for Arrokoth not only gave us unprecedented views of a distant Kuiper Belt object but also revolutionized our methods for studying this frontier region of our solar system.- Exoplanet Research and Citizen Science: In an exciting development for exoplanet research, amateur astronomers and citizen scientists have made significant contributions to our understanding of distant worlds. Their efforts have helped refine the orbital parameters of an exoplanet known as WASP-77 ab. This collaborative project, led by researcher Federico R. Noger from Arizona State University, along with teams from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Goddard Space Flight Center, has produced the most precise physical and orbital parameters to date for WASP-77 ab. The study combined data from various citizen science projects, including Exoplanet Watch and ExoClock, as well as professional observations from space telescopes like Spitzer, Hubble, and James Webb. WASP-77 ab is a gas giant exoplanet, slightly larger than Jupiter but orbiting incredibly close to its star. These refined parameters will help astronomers better predict future transit events, crucial for planning spacecraft observations and improving atmospheric models. This success story highlights the power of citizen science in advancing our knowledge of the cosmos. It shows that anyone with a passion for Astronomy can contribute meaningfully to cutting-edge research, bridging the gap between amateur enthusiasts and professional scientists. Growing up in the Swiss Alps, Fritz Zwicky liked to throw rocks across rivers, and snowballs at church steeples. He just wanted to throw things higher and farther than anyone else. Decades later, Zwicky became the first person to throw something away from Earth — a metal ball bearing blasted from the nose cone of a rocket. It escaped Earth's gravity and went into orbit around the Sun. It was the first step in a grand plan to explore the solar system. Zwicky was born 125 years ago today, in Bulgaria. After earning his doctorate in astronomy, he joined the Mount Wilson and Palomar observatories in California. At the time, any star that suddenly flared into view was called a nova. But in the late 1920s, Zwicky realized that not all of these stars are alike. Some are far more powerful than others, so they're called supernovas. Zwicky and a colleague also realized that a supernova should leave behind a crushed corpse, called a neutron star. The first one was discovered more than 30 years later. Zwicky also served as research director at Aerojet Engineering. He studied jet engines, solar-powered furnaces, and colonies on the Moon. And he devised a five-step plan for human expansion into space — from “throwing” pellets farther into space, to reworking the planets and moons of the solar system to make them habitable. The Coma Cluster consists of more than a thousand galaxies, all moving through space together. Yet most of the cluster is invisible — it consists of dark matter. It produces no energy, but its gravity pulls on the visible matter around it. The Coma Cluster provided the earliest evidence of dark matter. It was first suspected by Fritz Zwicky, who was born 125 years ago this week. We'll have more about him tomorrow. Zwicky was studying observations of the Coma Cluster made by Edwin Hubble, the namesake of Hubble Space Telescope. He found that many of the galaxies were moving too fast to be held by the gravity of the cluster's visible matter. He surmised that some form of “dark matter” was contributing to the cluster's total gravity. But there were so many uncertainties in the observations that other astronomers didn't buy it. It wasn't until the 1970s that enough evidence began to pile up to convince most astronomers. Today, we know that dark matter makes up about 85 percent of all the matter in the universe. Yet we still don't know what it is. The leading idea has been that it's a heavy subatomic particle. But searches have all come up empty. So new searches are focusing on much lighter particles — perhaps the “missing mass” of the universe. The Coma Cluster is in the constellation Coma Berenices, which climbs into good view in the northeast by 10 or 11 p.m. Small telescopes reveal several of the cluster's galaxies.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

Subrayan et al. on Wednesday 30 November We analyze a sample of 45 Type II supernovae from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) public survey using a grid of hydrodynamical models in order to assess whether theoretically-driven forecasts can intelligently guide follow up observations supporting all-sky survey alert streams. We estimate several progenitor properties and explosion physics parameters including zero-age-main-sequence (ZAMS) mass, mass-loss rate, kinetic energy, 56Ni mass synthesized, host extinction, and the time of explosion. Using complete light curves we obtain confident characterizations for 34 events in our sample, with the inferences of the remaining 11 events limited either by poorly constraining data or the boundaries of our model grid. We also simulate real-time characterization of alert stream data by comparing our model grid to various stages of incomplete light curves (t less than 25 days, t less than 50 days, all data), and find that some parameters are more reliable indicators of true values at early epochs than others. Specifically, ZAMS mass, time of explosion, steepness parameter beta, and host extinction are reasonably constrained with incomplete light curve data, whereas mass-loss rate, kinetic energy and 56Ni mass estimates generally require complete light curves spanning greater than 100 days. We conclude that real-time modeling of transients, supported by multi-band synthetic light curves tailored to survey passbands, can be used as a powerful tool to identify critical epochs of follow up observations. Our findings are relevant to identify, prioritize, and coordinate efficient follow up of transients discovered by Vera C. Probing the low-mass end of core-collapse supernovae using a sample of strongly-stripped Calcium-rich Type IIb Supernovae from the Zwicky Transient Facility by Kaustav K. Das et al. on Wednesday 12 October The fate of stars in the zero-age main-sequence (ZAMS) range $approx 8-12$ Msun is unclear. They could evolve to form white dwarfs or explode as electron-capture supernovae (SNe) or iron core-collapse SNe (CCSNe). Even though the initial mass function indicates that this mass range should account for over 40% of all CCSNe progenitors, few have been observationally confirmed, likely owing to the faintness and rapid evolution of these transients. In this paper, we present a sample of nine Ca-rich/O-poor Type IIb SNe detected by the Zwicky Transient Facility with progenitors likely in this mass range. We perform a holistic analysis of the spectroscopic and photometric properties of the sample. These sources have a flux ratio of [Ca II] $lambda lambda$7291, 7324 to [O I] $lambda lambda$6300, 6364 of $gtrsim$ 2 in their nebular spectra. Comparing the measured [O I] luminosity ($lesssim 10^{39} mathrm{erg s^{-1}}$) and derived oxygen mass ($lesssim 0.1$ Msun) with theoretical models, we infer that the progenitor ZAMS mass for these explosions is less than 12 Msun. These correspond to He-stars with core masses less than around 3 Msun. We find that the ejecta properties (Mej $lesssim 1$ Msun) are also consistent with those expected for such low mass He-stars. The low ejecta mass of these sources indicates a class of strongly-stripped SNe that is a transition between the regular stripped-envelope SNe and ultra-stripped SNe. The progenitor could be stripped by a main sequence companion and result in the formation of a neutron star $-$ main sequence binary. Such binaries have been suggested to be progenitors of neutron star $-$ white dwarf systems that could merge within a Hubble time, and be detectable with LISA. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.05729v1

The multi-epoch X-ray tale of I Zwicky 1 outflows by Daniele Rogantini et al. on Wednesday 07 September The narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy I Zwicky 1 shows a unique and complex system of ionised gas in outflow, which consists of an ultra-fast wind and a two-component warm absorber. In the last two decades, XMM-Newton monitored the source multiple times enabling the study of the long-term variability of the various outflows. Plasma in photoionisation equilibrium with the ionising source responds and varies accordingly to any change of the ionising luminosity. However, detailed modelling of the past RGS data has shown no correlation between the plasma ionisation state and the ionising continuum, revealing a complex long-term variability of the multi-phase warm absorber. Here, we present a new observation of I Zwicky 1 by XMM-Newton taken in early 2020 characterised by a lower X-ray flux state. The soft X-ray spectrum from the RGS reveals the two components of the warm absorber with $log xi sim -1.0$ and $log xi sim 1.7$. Comparing our results with the previous observations, the ionisation state of the two absorbing gas components is continuously changing, following the same unpredictable behaviour. The new results strengthen the scenario in which the ionisation state of the warm absorber is driven by the density of the gas rather than the ionising luminosity. In particular, the presence of a radiation driven, inhomogeneous clumpy outflow may explain both the variability in ionisation throughout the years and the line-locked N V system observed in the UV band. Finally, the EPIC-pn spectrum reveals an ultra-fast wind with an outflow velocity of $sim 0.26c$ and ionisation parameter of $log xi sim 3.8$. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.02747v1

Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - When Jan Zwicky talked about the need to be independent of the grid, she mentioned a 60 second outage at 4 AM last year. Zwicky wasn't aware there was a problem until she went into the basement three days later. Her freezer, which had been packed with food, was off. Most of the contents were ruined. Zwicky said she is not dependant on a computer and has a back-up system that can keep the lights on, “ But boy, I don't want that freezer to fall apart!” “So I think I can, can encourage all of us as it were to do that kind of energy inventory. Where do you really need it? What would it take to keep you functional?” she said. Mike Gall added, “We've we've learned very quickly in the past two years, And then in particular, in the last two months, the how fragile our systems of sustaining our society truly are.” Quadra Island receives its electricity from Vancouver Island. “All the takes is a severing of that artery and suddenly we're into a 2, 3, 4 week scramble to try and live with literally no electricity available to us other than what we can do by running generators or some secondary means of supplying our electrical requirements,” he said. Jan Zwicky and Mike Gall are members if Quadra Island's Energy Self Sufficiency team, one of several groups that came out of the community meeting that launched ICAN, in March 2020. “It was suggested that we divide up into interest groups and energy was one of them. I ended up talking with Rod Burns and Jack Segal, those were the two folks most interested in energy. I'm really aware of the places where for me electrical energy is essential and I don't trust the grid staying up,” Zwicky explained. She remembers Quadra losing power for 10 days, when a hurricane struck in 2014. Zwicky was living in Edmonton in 1994, when the Northridge earthquake in California took out Alberta's grid. That was when it dawned on her, “This is a continental system. You can't count on it's being there if there's a crisis somewhere else.” “We believe that there will be upcoming stresses on the energy system. There's going to be a way more price hikes , but also a lot of our energy contributes to climate crisis, said Zwicky. “We're encouraging awareness of ways in which energy can be conserved to make your life less dependent on the grid and then awareness of alternative ways of satisfying your energy needs to make you even more independent of the grid.” The energy self sufficiency team is working on a number of projects right now. They're putting solar panels on the roof of Quadra Elementary School and intend to hold workshops on: an inexpensive DYI window insulation; testing cleaning, and recharging batteries; and on the pros and cons of various solar heating systems. They also supported the recent Canoe Pass Tidal energy project on Quadra Island which, according to the Quadra ICAN website,” hinged on government's willingness to allow a non-profit island energy co-op to participate in BC Hydro's net metering program.” However the Energy Self Sufficiency team says Quadra residents will need to do more than just produce more energy. “The first steps is the conservation mode learning all the techniques that you can possibly garner to bring your energy consumption levels down,” said Gall. Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - Quadra ICAN will soon be installing 14 solar panels on the roof of Quadra Elementary School. Terratek Energy already has the panels and mounting system in stock. They are waiting for final approval, which should arrive in December. The system is expected to generate approximately 5.6 megawatt hours of power a year, which is what an average home uses and about 5% of the school's electricity needs. As ICAN Energy Self-Sufficiency team members Jan Zwicky and Mike Gall explained, this project is meant to educate grade 5 and 6 children how solar panels work. They will be able to access real time readings of what the panels are generating at any given moment, on their computers and phones. “So during the summer when they generate lots of power, that would be a pretty exciting event, but in the winter we can also find that perhaps solar panels are a little bit weak as part as the total,” explained Gall. He added that this shortfall leads to the question, “What else can we add to help reduce the costs of operation?” This could also prompt kids to start asking to see the family BC Hydro bills at home. “Part of the idea is also to help members of the community evaluate the extent to which solar power might be at least a partial solution for them,” said Zwicky. One of the advantages of real time readings is that, if the panels are not generating sufficient power at any given moment, people can choose to lower their energy consumption. Quadra ICAN is waiting for approval to add the weight of the panels to the school's roof. They originally hoped to use a new lightweight racking system, but “discovered the roof was constructed in such a way that there was a little layer in it that couldn't be penetrated.” This meant they need to use a standard system, which requires a permit. Zwicky is confident this is coming because “we only need to add a very small amount of weight per square foot.” The roof was built to carry the snow loads experienced 25-40 years ago and the calculations for this region have been lowered due to climate change. This means that even with the added weight of the panels, the roof should still meet engineering requirements, “but we have to be able to prove that engineering wise.” “If we can get the approval,  we would start construction in December. The system would be operational by at least the new year, maybe even in December,” said Gall. “We would hopefully also be able to take advantage of the school break during the winter months so that we're not interfering with the kids access to the school while it's being done. It's only a day or two's worth of work.”

In 1933 Fritz Zwicky suggested that the high speeds of galaxies in the relatively distant Coma Cluster are indicative of some type of invisible material which is pulling on them. In the 1970's Dr. Vera Rubin began to measure the speeds of stars in galaxies using the Doppler shift. She expected stars orbiting at different distances from the centers of spiral galaxies to behave like the planets in our solar system since for these giant star systems the luminous mass that we observe is concentrated towards their centers.  To her amazement the stars near the edge of the great galaxy in Andromeda and many other spiral galaxies are moving at speeds which indicate that these galaxies contain ten times the amount of mass that emits radiation which is visible to us. It was at this point that Dr. Rubin realized that she had discovered compelling evidence to support Zwicky's dark matter hypothesis.

Inden da havde han været redaktør for Børneavisen og Public Service-ansigtet for DR's nyheder til børn, Ultra Nyt. Fra at sidde til middagsselskaber og få ros og interesse for sit arbejde med at formidle nyheder til børn, blev han mødt af skepsis og mistro i sin nye rolle. Da det blev afsløret, at Huawei var involveret i udvikling af software, der kunne bruges til at forfølge et mindretal i Kina, sagde han sit job op. Vi snakker med ham om hans oplevelse hos Huawei. Rigtig mange danskere keder sig nok rigtig meget for tiden, nu hvor vi må lave så lidt. Vi snakker med en ekspert i kedsomhed om det. In this episode of the podcast, we talk with Beth’s longtime friend and colleague Cynthia Zwicky about the ancient tradition and emerging movement work field of Restorative Justice. While we talk about Cynthia’s experience primarily within the context of the education system, we also reflect on how the practice of restorative justice can provide a vital foundation for much of the social justice work we do. We also discussed how institutionalized power and privilege in the pursuit of justice often results in prioritizing the peace and comfort of those in power rather then well being of the community as a whole. Finally, Cynthia shares her experience first bringing restorative methodologies to her North Minneapolis school, the challenges she faced in doing so, and the ultimate successes her school achieved as a result. Beth also catches us up on what she’s been up to so far this decade, what she’s got coming up, how to get in on her upcoming “Facilitating Cultural Change” workshop, and gives us a sneak preview of our next few episodes. W 1933 roku astronom Fritz Zwicky zauważył, że galaktyki wchodzące w skład gromady Coma poruszają się znacznie szybciej niż powinny, biorąc pod uwagę masę tej gromady wywnioskowaną na podstawie jej obserwowanej jasności. Zwicky doszedł zatem do wniosku, że większość materii budującej gromadę Coma nie świeci - jest ciemna. To początek pojęcia ciemnej materii w fizyce i astronomii. W czasie wykładu zostanie wyjaśnione, jaka była ewolucja tego pojęcia, czym może być i czym nie może ciemna materia, dlaczego jest ona tak ważna i budzi takie zainteresowanie, jak jej szukać oraz jakie są z nią związane kontrowersje.

Back in the early 1930s, astronomer Fritz Zwicky discovered a problem. Zwicky studied galaxy clusters, which can contain hundreds to thousands of galaxies loosely bound together by gravity. While examining one such cluster, he realized that the visible material within the galaxies did not have enough mass to hold the cluster together. As a result, he inferred that some dark, unseen matter must exist. Decades later, Ramanath Cowsik theorized about the source of this extra gravitational force. Cowsik, who now directs the McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences, describes the history of dark matter and shares how his discovery changed the way scientists think about this invisible force in the universe.

I forelæsningen diskuterer Michael Zwicky Hauschild, professor på Danmarks Tekniske Universitet, hvad vi mener med bæredygtighed. Han ser også på, hvilke aspekter der er omfattet af bæredygtighedsbegrebet. Galaxy formation is one of the most fascinating topics of modern cosmology. Since time immemorial, people have desired to understand the origin, motion and evolution of planets, stars and, more recently, galaxies and the Universe as a whole. Great advances in astronomy always have had impact on philosophy and redefined the self-understanding of mankind within the Universe. The first milestone on the long road of discoveries was undoubtedly the formulation of the laws of gravity and mechanics in 1687 by Newton. Einstein's extension of these laws in the years 1905 and 1913 led to a revolutionised understanding of space and time. In 1929 Hubble established the expanding Universe which subsequently led to the postulation of the hot Big Bang by Lemaitre (1934). Zwicky (1933) found that most of matter in the Universe is dark. The nature of this matter, interacting only through gravity and perhaps through the weak interaction, is still a mystery. Finally, Penzias and Wilson (1965) discovered the cosmic microwave background radiation, not only confirming the theory of the Big Bang, but also - as was observed later - revealing the origin of structure in the Universe. Today, cosmology and especially galaxy formation are fast paced exciting scientific fields. Surveys like the Sloan Digital Sky Survey will soon provide a catalogue of about 500 million galaxies with an unprecedent wealth of data. Deep observations with 8 or 10 m telescopes or with the Hubble Space telescope allow to observe objects in their very early evolutionary stages. In addition to this, the dramatic increase in computer power now allows us to carry out numerical experiments on galaxies and even on the large scale structure of the Universe. The latter is possible because of the extraordinary fact that as a result of microwave background observations the properties of the Universe some 300,000 years after the Big Bang are well known. As ordinary matter makes up only about ten percent of the total matter in the Universe, it can be neglected in simulations in a first approximation. An initial density field can then be evolved under the sole influence of gravity. The result of such simulations may be combined with semi-analytic models for the baryonic physics associated with galaxy formation. Gravity is a long range force, and it turns out that length scales of 100 Mpc or more have to be included in large scale structure simulations in order to obtain results that are representative for the Universe as a whole. The sizes of galaxies, however, are three to four orders of magnitude smaller than this so that numerical resolution has always been a concern in simulations which try to include galaxy formation. A clever and powerful trick alleviates this problem. After a low-resolution simulation has been performed, a small region of interest is selected and the simulation is run again, this time concentrating most of the computational effort on the small region, allowing the resolution to be increase dramatically without losing tidal influences from the large cosmological volume. This technique - called resimulation - is the driving force behind all the simulations that were performed for this thesis. After having run about 1500 supercomputer jobs it is clear that this technique is extremely powerful and allows the faithful simulation of objects that are far into the regime of non-linear evolution while taking into account the full cosmological context. In the first chapter of this work we briefly introduce aspects of the observable Universe and discuss the relevant theoretical background for this thesis. In the second chapter we use high-resolution simulations of structure formation to investigate the influence of the local environment of dark matter haloes on their properties. We run a series of four re-simulations of a typical, carefully selected representative region of the Universe so that we can explicitly check for convergence of the numerical results. In our highest resolution simulation we are able to resolve dark matter haloes as small as the one of the large Magellanic cloud. We propose a new method to estimate the density in the environment of a collapsed object and find weak correlations of the spin parameter and the concentration parameter with the local halo density. We find no such correlation for the halo shapes, the formation time and the last major merging event. In a second step we produce catalogues of model galaxies using a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. We find correlations between the bulge-to-disk luminosity and the B-V colour index with the local environment. In chapter three we compare observations of the internal structure and kinematics of the eleven known satellites of the Milky Way with simulations of the formation of its dark halo in a LambdaCDM universe. Earlier work by Moore et al. 1999 and Klypin et al. 1999 claimed the cosmological concordance model of the Universe, the LambdaCDM model, to disagree with observations. The so-called "substructure-problem" is one of the two major challenges for this model and has attracted much attention. In order to remove the discrepancy, changes of the cosmological model have been proposed. We reinvestigate the substructure-problem using our ultra-high resolution simulations. For a galaxy-sized dark matter halo, our mass resolution is the highest resolution ever achieved. In contrast to the work of Moore et al. 1999 and Klypin et al. 1999, we find excellent agreement. The observed kinematics are exactly those predicted for stellar populations with the observed spatial structure orbiting within the most massive "satellite" substructures in our simulations. Less massive substructures have weaker potential wells than those hosting the observed satellites. If there is a halo substructure "problem", it consists in understanding why halo substructures have been so inefficient in making stars. We find that suggested modifications of dark matter properties (e.g. self-interacting or warm dark matter) may well spoil the good agreement found for standard Cold Dark Matter. If the dark matter in the Universe is made of weakly self-interacting particles, they may self-annihilate and emit gamma-rays. The detection of the gamma-ray signal would finally, after seventy years since its discovery, shed light on the nature of the dark matter. In chapter four we use our ultra-high resolution numerical simulations to estimate directly the annihilation flux from the central region of the Milky Way and from dark matter substructures in its halo. Such estimates remain uncertain because of their strong dependence on the structure of the densest regions of the halo. Our numerical experiments suggest, however, that less direct calculations have typically overestimated the emission from the centre of the Milky Way and from its halo's substructure. We find an overall enhancement of at most a factor of a few with respect to a smooth halo of standard NFW structure. For an observation outside the region around the galactic centre where the diffuse galactic gamma-ray background is dominant, GLAST can probe a large region of possible MSSM models. This result is independent of the exact structure of the innermost region of the Galaxy. Our analysis shows that the flux from the inner galaxy exceeds the expected contribution from the brightest substructure by a large factor. Nevertheless, for certain MSSM models substructure halos might be detectable with GLAST.
