With the new year comes a new surge of energy for me to GET MY LIFE IN ORDER! My kids always laugh at me when I get these bursts of motivation because they never last. They roll their eyes and humor me as I declare plans to declutter our home and patiently wait for my resolve to fizzle. Is this cycle familiar to you too? Well, if so, you're in for a treat. I truly believe that with some mindset shifts and a deeper commitment to our WHY for decluttering our homes, this can be the year that decluttering actually sticks. My guest today, Erica Layne from The Life on Purpose Movement, believes this too. On this week's episode, Erica will share: - The simple mindset shift that can make it easier to "get to work" when you're feeling overwhelmed by your messy house. - What clutter does (and does NOT) say about you. - The best way to approach decluttering with sentimental items. Are you ready to start the decluttering process and follow through this time? Let's do this! Plus, if you're looking to dive deeper into mental decluttering, my Declutter Your Motherhood Course is currently $50 off through the end of January. This bonus excerpt is one I pulled from Eli's full episode that dropped earlier this week. (If you haven't had a chance to listen, I highly recommend it. It's one of the most value-packed conversations I've had on 3 in 30!) Because it was so value-packed, we had to trim it to 30 minutes, and I didn't want you to miss out on this fascinating part of the conversation, so I decided to make it a bonus episode. These thoughts from Eli on co-regulation for parents blew my mind! I mean, I had heard of co-regulation before, but the scientific evidence behind it is fascinating! I had no idea there were nerve fibers that are activated when I caress my child, and these nerve fibers calm my child's heart down! It takes the old adage "If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy" to a whole new level.
We all know how important it is to raise securely attached kids, but how to do it can be the tricky part! It's true what they say about parenting: The days are long but the years are short. I feel like the years are flying by with my two kids, who are both now in double digits, and I often find myself wondering how I can parent them in a way that will keep our bonds strong through their teen years and into adulthood - and in a way that they will thrive in their adult relationships after they leave my care. This is why I've been drawn to the work of therapist and author Eli Harwood, who has dedicated her career to studying research on attachment theory and making it applicable to everyday humans trying to build secure relationships, whether that's the clients in her private practice, the hundreds of thousands who follow her on social media, or the people across the world who read her books. Eli's newest book, Raising Securely Attached Kids, will be released on September 3, 2024, and it was a thrill to have her back on the podcast to discuss this important topic. And Moon Mastery 101 begins next week: Sign up here! 02:51 – This week's theme is: Independent Women! 03:01 – The three big things: First, we have a Full Moon at 14 Virgo this week! The Moon is conjunct the Asteroid Lilith (representing the woman who would not be subservient) and parallel fixed star Altair (the eagle, representing boldness and military power). This Full Moon also squares Mars at 21 Gemini on fixed star Capella, expressing the need for independence. So, this Full Moon represents folks struggling against oppression. Also, will Beyonce make news this week? Her chart is activated! 05:55 – Second, Saturn enters Pisces for the next three years! Saturn represents structures, boundaries, and achievement after hard work. Pisces is the zodiac's last sign, representing endings, compassion, forgiveness, spirituality, and concern for other people. Will Jimmy Carter make more news? His chart is activated, and he represents both an authority (Saturn, since he was President) and he's very Piscean. Where are you looking to find mastery? Where is Pisces in your chart, and what house will Saturn pass through? (Also, for only $12, grab your Saturn in Pisces video series!) 09:00 – Third, Jupiter (abundance, law, long journeys) meets Chiron ("the wounded healer") at 14 Aries. This transit could also be related to women fighting for freedom globally: Venus in Aries is sextile Mars in Gemini in a received sextile. Also, Mercury in Pisces is sextile Uranus in Taurus – on a world point! Will there be an announcement about change or freedom from something? We may see a release with the Moon in the Disseminating Phase (5 Scorpio) and near the South Node. The Jupiter/Chiron conjunction at 14 Aries is also conjunct fixed star Alpheratz, which relates to the wonder of the flying horse and its sense of freedom and love of movement. What will be set free in your life, and what will we see in world news? 15:45 – On Sunday, the theme is OPPORTUNITY. Make your own magic. The Moon enters Virgo at 7:38 pm PT. 17:09 – On Monday, the word of the day is FREEDOM. Bad habit begone! Someone may wild out. 18:20 – Tuesday's focus is DISSOLUTION. Check out the show notes for the Saturn in Pisces video series. The Full Moon at 16 Virgo is at 4:40 am PT. Saturn enters Pisces at 5:34 am PT. 19:27 – On Wednesday, the word is RECOVERY. What was lost may be found. The Moon enters Libra at 6:43 am PT. 20:16 – On Thursday, the theme is ENCHANTMENT. Find the delight in something magical. 20:45 – On Friday, the emphasis is DEEP. Complex emotions may surface. The Moon enters Scorpio at 4:05 pm PT. 21:31 – On Saturday, the word is REQUEST. Ask, believe, receive! The Disseminating Moon at 5 Scorpio is at 2:32 am PT. Jupiter is conjunct Chiron at 14 Aries. 23:40 – Thanks for listening to Celestial Insights! Celeste discusses how this relates to the Pisces New Moon from last week. Also, movie star Raquel Welch died, coinciding with Venus conjunct Neptune. Another related story was Nikki Haley announcing her run for President and Nicola Sturgeon stepping down as First Minister of Scotland. 04:25 – This week's theme is: Bullseye! It can be one of the most productive weeks of the year! 04:35 – The three big things: First, we have a First Quarter Moon (FQM) at 8 Gemini on Monday. This FQM relates to the New Moon from May 30, 2022; it will also connect to the Full Moon on November 27, 2023. This FQM is conjunct fixed star Aldebaran (the right and bright eye of the bull) on the USA's Uranus. It is a hot degree, where Mars stationed direct on January 12. At the time, all the airlines grounded, so take measures to prepare for travel problems, as needed. Also, take care around fire. Interestingly, Venus joins Vesta at 8 Aries in a sextile with the Moon – think, "Crazy eights." Saturn and Pluto are also at 29 degrees, in a semi-sextile, which can speak to being in the right place at the right time. Pay attention! Aldebaran can bring success, but you must act with integrity. 08:44 – Second, Venus (love, beauty, harmony) conjuncts Jupiter (abundance, luck, serendipity) at 12 Aries – the benefics meet! Benefics give to life, rather than take away. Do you have planets at 10-15 degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra, or Capricorn? Something positive could happen this week, or perhaps you'll make great connections. Do watch out for overindulging. 11:07 – Third, Mercury enters Pisces (March 2 – March 18) on Thursday. Mercury's last aspect will be conjunct Saturn in Aquarius, which may bring a hard news cycle, but is excellent for concentration! Then, when Mercury enters Pisces, it can struggle to communicate. Lean into expressing yourself through creativity. 13:25 – On Sunday, the theme is COMPROMISE. Avoid the pitfall of senseless arguing with those you love. Potential topics are chores and kids. The Moon enters Gemini at 7:47 am PT. 14:50 – On Monday, the word of the day is CHOICES. Consider your options and make a decision. First Quarter Moon at 8 Gemini at 5:25 am PT. 16:12 – Tuesday's focus is DOUBLECHECK. Review your strategy and adjust as needed. The Moon enters Cancer at 6:39 pm PT. 16:57 – On Wednesday, the word is INDULGENCE. Treat yourself to something nice but don't break the bank. 17:58 – On Thursday, the theme is DELIBERATE. Great day for concentrated thinking. Mercury enters Pisces at 2:51 pm PT. 18:48 – On Friday, the emphasis is HEALING. Practice self-care. The Gibbous Moon occurs at 27 Cancer at 2:19 am. The Moon enters Leo at 7:15 am. 20:20 – On Saturday, the word is CAUTIOUS. Look before you leap. 21:16 – Thanks for listening to Celestial Insights! If you've ever struggled with indecision, overthinking or lack of self-trust, this episode is for you. This episode will teach you how to practice self-trust, how to not belabor or second-guess yourself, and how to get out of the spiral of overthinking. In this episode of The Confidence Podcast, we're talking about: How to build self-trust, and how to trust big decisions you need to make How to be someone who does what they say they will do How to become a good bet - trusting that your effort will always pay off REVIEW OF THE WEEK: The COC takes the podcast to the next level. . I could have just watched the workshop to save myself hours of listening to podcasts. What I loved about this workshop were the exercises to help evaluate failures, and handle thoughts about future failures. -Trevor F. TRUSTING YOURSELF - HOW TO DO IT Know yourself. Establish a baseline of friendship with yourself. Actionables: Write out a list of times when you have made good choices, worthy of trust.Write out another list where you didn't trust yourself - and why that makes sense. PAST BROKEN SELF-TRUST IS A GOOD THING I spent years second-guessing and overthinking because I trusted hard - and the wrong people. Like anything, decision-making isn't something that just comes naturally. It's a skill that we have to learn, we have to practice, we have to strengthen. Therefore, the decisions you made in the past make sense. How does it make sense?Would I do it differently?Next time what will I change? We get stuck in overthinking and tapping into other people for decisions and over-confirming because we cast judgment on past "bad" decisions. Instead of labeling a decision "good" or "bad," what would it look like to label it as the decision you wanted to make? … that whatever the decision, you know that you can make it a good decision. HOW TO "BET ON YOURSELF" The best thing Brandon has ever said to me is: "you're a good bet." I'm going to say the same to you. How can you create a personal where you are a good bet? Show up for yourselfBe impeccable to your word.Have your own back.Train Affirmations for Self-Trust: I am a good bet.I made good decisions.I am worthy of trust and I act in a way that builds trust with myself.I have my own back.My inner voice is clear and strong.I trust God's plan for my life and I am practicing listening to His guidance. I have the courage to show up in the world as myself.I am okay making decisions other people don't agree with.I love trusting myself.Happiness is my natural state. It's safe to trust myself here.I always know what's best for me.I can make any decision a good decision. I make good decisions that make my life better. My gut tells me when something is off and I am good at listening to it. I seek inner peace and I can hear God's promptings. I believe in myself and in my potential. I am good at follow-through.I can create emotional certainty in the face of uncertainty. God guides me and will always be with me. This episode of Graying Rainbows is a review of Billie Jean King's new autobiography "All In." I highly recommend the audio version because it is read by King and her emotions come through. King's story includes "coming out later in life." She describes the toll that the delay took on her health and happiness, as well as the new sense of freedom she discovered when she was finally out to herself and the world. In Beyond the Binary of Deconstruction and Reconstruction Part Two, the discussion centers around the aftermath of waking up. What do you do with the shame, regret and anger of living in a high control environment? Each host shares their journey through that cloud of emotions. Being gracious with yourself, finding a safe place to express anger and learning to listen are some of the lessons learned by our hosts in their waking up aftermaths. They also explore how those manifestations of waking up can be connected to our place in this world. Race, gender and sexual identities can play a big part in what we feel we are “allowed” to feel or express. Triggers are also talked about as important revelations about our own assumptions. The episode concludes with our Overrated/Underrated segment. The segment leads into a detailed tiered system that Jeff has devised on restaurants. Beyond the Binary of Deconstruction and Reconstruction Part One explores the first movement in someone's journey toward change, waking up. To lay the groundwork, not only for this episode but the episodes to come in this series, each host shares some of the experiences that put them on the path of deconstruction. Because of the benefit of highsight, insight is given into the difficulty and eventual freedom in the deconstruction process. Toward the end of the main conversation we share a relevant portion of an interview with Debbie Glander, LMFT. Debbie's insights into the negative effects of many fundamentalists communities is invaluable. The episode closes with a segment called This or That. Once again during the segment Jeff and Rajeev enter into their timeless battle about what makes pizza pizza. Progressivism and Fundamentalism once again do battle on the cheesy field of goodness. This episode is an interview with Julie Sondra Decker, author of "The Invisible Orientation: An Introduction to Asexuality." Most people acknowledge that sexual orientations includes homosexuals, bisexuals, and heterosexuals, but there is actually a fourth possibility. A person who identifies as asexual does not feel sexual attraction to anyone. Unfortunately, many assume that this represents a disease when actually it is part of normal human diversity. We discuss what asexuality IS as well as what it is NOT. Asexuality is about attraction NOT behavior. Our goal is to embrace human diversity and acknowledge that each person's identity should be respected as equally valid. If the idea of asexuality is new to you, I hope you will listen to this informative interview. Dr. Larry Millhoffer is a retired physician who is grateful to have been with his husband for 45 years. Over that time the meaning of "coming out" has evolved, but a pivotal time in his life was caring for the first patients with AIDS as a young physician in the early 80's. During our conversation he reflects on the challenges of caring for patients in a time of fear and uncertainty, and on how the AIDS crisis changed the LGBT community. Because our community lost so many people during this period I think it is extremely valuable to hear from those who lived through that time. As a gay physician Dr. Millhoffer brings a perspective that we don't usually get to hear. Richard Lloyd Parry is the author of "Ghosts of the Tsunami," which focuses on the story of a small elementary school in the town of Okawa, around 200 miles north of Tokyo. 74 pupils and 10 teachers at the school that day lost their lives to the tsunami that followed the Great East Japan Earthquake. "Ghosts of the Tsunami" is a must read for anyone interested in learning about the disaster: a beautifully written, harrowing account of what happened on 3/11 and the events that unfolded afterward, as it became clear to survivors that the deaths of those children were entirely avoidable. With just five months and six days to go until the Olympic opening ceremony, large parts of Japan are still under a state of emergency, and the first vaccine has only just been approved for use here. As if those weren’t big enough challenges to overcome, the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee was plunged into scandal earlier this month after its president, Yoshiro Mori, suggested that women talk too much in board meetings, leading to his eventual resignation. On Jan. 6, the U.S. Capitol came under siege from a mob of Trump supporters, incited by the former president. The attack was condemned around the world and shone a spotlight onto the dangerous misinformation and conspiracies that fueled the riots. One that has come under particular scrutiny is QAnon, a conspiracy that dates to 2017 and that has picked up a significant following in the U.S. But, says Bloomberg’s Max Zimmerman, the U.S. is not the only country to have supporters of the QAnon conspiracy, and a fringe group of followers has also developed here in Japan. Japan has an uncomfortable relationship with tattoos, which are associated with the yakuza and the criminal underworld of Japan. We’re joined by Japan Times contributor and former columnist Alice Gordenker, who hopes to challenge that stereotype, through a new documentary she’s produced called “Horimono: Japan’s Tattoo Pilgrimage,” which follows the annual pilgrimage of the Choyukai, a group united by their full-body tattoos. We discuss Alice’s film, misconceptions about tattoos in Japan, and how tattoos turned from celebrated body art of the Edo Period to something thought of as a criminal accessory. Ginny is probably best known for her 2018 translation of "Convenience Store Woman," the bestselling novel by Sayaka Murata, which won the prestigious Akutagawa Prize when it was first published in Japanese in 2016. Like the original, the English translation was a bestseller, and the author and translator have collaborated again to translate Murata’s 11th novel, "Earthlings," which was published at the beginning of October. We hear from Ginny about the art of translation and why she thinks we should all be reading more books from other cultures. This episode of Graying Rainbows features my friend and fellow physician Lorena de Idiáquez Bakula. Lorena shares her story of growing up as a boy in Puru, where she attended university and medical school before moving to the United States to complete her training. It was not until she had been a successful physician for several years that she was able to transition and embrace her identity as a woman. Teotihuacan on Board Game Arena, ASK THE BELLHOP Today we have a question from Patron of the show Roger Meloche who asks: “I have a question regarding Power Creep. Not the kind you find in games, but the power creep experienced by the players. I was introduced to a game called “Great Western Trail”. I had never experienced anything like this, it was all completely new to me. To say I was overwhelmed would be an understatement. I remember somebody saying the game was easy, before we played it and I am sure they really thought it was, but I wouldn’t call it a gateway game. Of course, now that I’ve played many different games, I would take a game like Great Western Trail in stride and really enjoy it. This brings me to my first question; How do you determine if a given player’s skill and experience is a good match for a new game they are about to play, given that a player’s skill level is very subjective at best? As far as power creep goes; As my skill increases and I look for greater and greater challenges, am I going to lose interest in most of the current games in my collection as I pursue this hobby?” Links: Weighing in on Game Complexity, A Heavy Topic - Podcast Ep 38, Board Game Geek, Weight on BGG, Race for the Galaxy, How to pick what board game to play? When Kim Tang discovered Bikram Yoga in 2003, a fire was lit within her to inspire and empower others in their ability to change their minds, bodies, relationships with themselves, and the consciousness with which they conduct their lives. Kim has been a student, teacher, studio owner, presenter, demonstrator, and champion of yoga, and she is here to support your expansion. David Danon is a multi-faceted yogi with 40 years of practice and over 20 years of teaching experience. In that time, he has founded a clothing line, earned a pilot’s license, built motorcycles, and followed a number of other creative pursuits, perhaps all fueled by his deep questioning of authority and the status quo. After a cancer diagnosis in 2012, he embarked on a journey of research and experimentation into the world of traditional and alternative treatments of cancer, which has recently culminated in the release of his new book, Life, Yoga and Cancer: Lessons From the Battlefield. In this episode, you’ll hear from David on: What yoga, dharma, and improvisational jazz have in common, and why children have a unique advantage to progress in almost anything Why creativity is overrated when it comes to sequencing, and the value of consistent repetition in both teaching and practice Dealing with hypersensitive students in class, and what David focuses on to get students to either fall in love or stay in love with yoga How he used the tools he learned in yoga to respond to a cancer diagnosis, and how anyone can face a worthy opponent in the battlefield of life with grace Announcements: Sign up for 300-hour Advanced Jared McCann Yoga teacher training this July at Lighthouse Yoga School. Jered Seibert is the founder of Warrior Wear LLC. Last year in 2017, he left his mutual fund sales work to become a full-time entrepreneur, creating yoga products for men. Drawing upon inspiration from yoga service, and frustrated by the lack of brands and stereotypes of male practitioners, he decided to start his own company. In this episode, you’ll hear from Jered on: Why he’s made it his mission to change the narrow image of yoga for male practitioners, and the importance of finding your “why” as an entrepreneur in any space How he struggled to take off the mask he wore for years as an insurance salesmen, and why authenticity is especially important in the yoga community How developing a quality of sensitivity has helped him build connections and create a movement larger than himself Announcements: Sign up for 300-hour Advanced Jared McCann Yoga teacher training this July at Lighthouse Yoga School. Jeanne Heaton’s journey began with the deep realization that if she were to save her life she would need to change it, entirely. After years of debilitating heroin addiction and homelessness, a painful attempt at rehabilitation, and eventually surrender, she discovered hot yoga and realized ‘this’ was the missing ingredient to her recovery, and that it could be the missing ingredient to everyone’s recovery. She received a scholarship to Bikram Yoga Teacher Training in 2010 and went on to co-found the non-profit, ‘One Posture at a Time’ with Pure Action.org in Texas and Fuel Hot Yoga in Georgia. Jeanne is currently drafting her upcoming book, From Junkie to Yogi, Finding Freedom One Posture at a Time. In this episode, you’ll hear from Jeanne on: Striking parallels between the 12-step program and the practice of yoga, and how yoga fills a critical missing link in the traditional addiction recovery process Why addiction is not a problem of the brain, despite popular opinion, and what addiction is truly a symptom of Why the one person you can’t stand or you think you’re most different from could be your absolute best, most important teacher The simple psychic shift Jeanne made (and continues to practice daily) that unlocked the present moment Announcements: Sign up for 300-hour Advanced Jared McCann Yoga teacher training this July at Lighthouse Yoga School. Michael Fine’s life was tragically altered on the morning of April 14, 2010, when driving to work, he was struck head on by a truck, resulting in the traumatic amputation of his left arm at the shoulder. After the accident, Michael found some relief from Chronic Residual Limb Pain Syndrome through a combination of Hatha Yoga and medical cannabis, both of which he has championed as a teacher and advocate. Michael believes there is no “magic bullet” to pain relief but rather a regular regime of various modalities, all working in unison, to treat the entire person, body, mind and spirit. In this episode, you’ll hear from Michael on: Readjusting to life after a life-altering accident that pushed Michael to a suicide attempt, and the specific yoga sequence that finally provided relief when nothing else could The simple yet profound mindshift that got Michael through the trials and tribulations of teacher training, after he had already packed his bags to leave early What Michael and his wife did to earn the hatred of health insurance companies, and how they’re helping to bring medical cannabis to the people of Illinois suffering from serious conditions Announcements: Sign up for 300-hour Advanced Jared McCann Yoga teacher training this July at Lighthouse Yoga School: henrywins.com/events Looking to deepen your practice without the teacher training? Today’s podcast is all about creating an elevator pitch. (An actual elevator not required) Elevator pitches aren’t just for sales people, everyone needs one, even if you’ve never been inside an elevator before in your life you need one. This show is jam-packed with content, tips, and the exact steps you need to take to create an elevator pitch that ROCKS. I was inspired to talk about this topic after participating in a career development workshop hosted by XACTLY CORP a couple weeks back. The workshop was led by Brandon Maslan, an Executive Advisor for AWE (Advancing Women Executives) organization. AWE's mission is to increase the number of women in senior management and on boards. They coach others on branding advancement strategies and inspire people to take action in their own career development. Ummm RIGHT.UP.MY.ALLEY. I admire Brandon for the passion, enthusiasm, and sense of humor he shares with others. I had the opportunity to attend Brandon’s Personal Branding workshop last year when XACTLY previously hosted him so it was really neat to see him again and soak up more of his juicy advice. Look for episode 19 to listen to last year’s show where I feature Brandon’s tips and tricks from his personal branding workshop!
