Most people think lab tests are only useful once something is wrong. But what if your blood work could show you where your health is headed—years before disease ever develops? In today's Office Hours, I break down how to read your labs through a functional medicine lens—so you can spot early dysfunction, connect the dots between symptoms and biomarkers, and take control of your health before problems escalate. In this episode, I walk you through: • Why “normal” lab ranges often miss early warning signs • The key markers that reveal the most about metabolic health, inflammation, thyroid function, nutrients, and cardiovascular risk • How functional medicine focuses on optimal ranges, patterns, and trends—not just disease thresholds • What your labs can tell you about symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, and gut issues • How to track your numbers over time and ask smarter questions to shift from reaction to prevention Labs aren't just for diagnosing disease—they're a roadmap to optimizing your future health. When you understand your numbers, you stop guessing and start making data-driven decisions that build resilience and longevity. Visit functionhealth.com for 160+ lab tests at just $365 a year. Millions live with chronic pain, fatigue, and brain fog—yet are told their tests are “normal.” In this episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Sayan speaks with Dr. Bruce Gillis about what changes when fibromyalgia is treated as a measurable, immune-linked condition. This conversation is for anyone living with fibromyalgia symptoms, long COVID–like fatigue, or persistent pain who feels dismissed or unheard. Dr. Gillis explains the science behind immune cell dysfunction, why symptoms can be body-wide, and how objective testing may support better care and self-advocacy—without relying on guesswork. About the Guest: Dr. Bruce Gillis is a physician and researcher, and the founder of Epic Genetics. He discusses the FM1 diagnostic blood test for fibromyalgia and his research connecting fibromyalgia symptoms to immune system abnormalities. Key Takeaways: Fibromyalgia may involve measurable immune dysfunction, not “all in the head” symptoms Chronic pain, brain fog, sleep issues, and GI distress can share a common underlying pathway Objective testing can help patients advocate for themselves and clarify next steps Viral triggers and epigenetic changes may play a role in symptom onset for some people Patients who feel stuck may benefit from reviewing peer-reviewed research, not internet noise How to Connect With the Guest: FM1 test info: https://fm1test.com/ IMBIX info: https://www.imbxx.com   Want to be a guest on Healthy Mind, Healthy Life? A recent 2024 Hologic x Gallup survey found that nearly half of women have skipped or delayed a health screening a doctor recommended. In this episode, we're breaking down a huge part of screenings and prevention: blood tests. I'm walking you through 10 blood tests that can reveal major health clues, what they actually tell you, and how knowing your numbers can help you feel more in control of your health — not stressed by it. Think Dobbs ended the abortion debate? The numbers say otherwise. We unpack why abortions have risen since the ruling, how chemical pills and telehealth shattered state borders, and why federal inaction leaves courts and clinics chasing the wrong target. From March for Life optics to agency appointments and policy gaps, we take a frank look at what pro-life voters expected, what they got, and how strategy must evolve when access is a mail-order box away. Then we pivot to real hope on the dementia front. A new blood test could flag Alzheimer's earlier, improved delivery methods aim to cross the blood-brain barrier more effectively, and gene therapy advances for neurodegenerative disease hint at a new class of treatments. We break down how inflammation, vaccines like shingles, lithium's neuroprotection, and lifestyle interventions interact, while keeping expectations grounded in the long timelines and hard math of clinical research. We also step into a kitchen-table dilemma: the soaring price of youth sports. Tryout fees, club dues, and travel costs pressure families to choose between community, church, and competition. We question the promises, ask what the end game should be, and explore healthier paths to skill, character, and family life that don't depend on a weekend in a hotel and a four-figure bill.To close, we talk AI's uneasy march into intimacy and end-of-life decisions—from chatbot “partners” to euthanasia pods with algorithmic gatekeepers. We love what AI can do for research and care, but we draw a clear line: technology must not replace moral judgment or human presence. If this conversation challenged or encouraged you, share it with a friend, subscribe for future episodes, and leave a review to help others find the show. What's the one change you think would make the biggest difference right now—policy, culture, or tech?SHOW NOTES:Abortions Rise after Dobbs: After the Supreme Court's 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization ended the constitutional right to abortion, national abortion numbers were expected to plunge. Instead, they rose. At the center of this counterintuitive trend are abortion pills, telemedicine, and the evil inclination of human beings who seek to usurp God's will with their own. In this episode, I share what showed up, what those results actually mean, and why this isn't failure or disease - but classic burnout biology - and how chronic stress quietly hijacks your hormones, your energy, your emotions, and your sense of self. Send us a textThere's not a lot that we both need to do and get paid to do. Dr. Michael Koren joins Kevin Geddings to discuss one of the most beneficial parts of clinical research: getting paid to do what you should be doing anyway. As an example, the doctor talks about Lp(a), a really, really, really, really bad cholesterol that increases the chances of having a heart attack and stroke. Dr. Koren explains that most people haven't had an Lp(a) test done because traditional cholesterol medications don't lower this really bad form of LDL, but that people canget an Lp(a) test done at a research center, get paid for their time and travel, and may even be referred to an Lp(a) lowering study if their numbers are high.Be a part of advancing science by participating in clinical research.Have a question for Dr. Koren? Cancer screening is evolving beyond a single-organ approach to an approach that evaluates multiple organs throughout the entirety of the body with a simple blood test. In this episode, Dr. Michelle Beidelschies shares how Cancerguard can help health systems detect more cancers earlier, reduce late-stage diagnoses, and improve outcomes. We explore the clinical, operational, and financial implications of adopting multi-cancer early detection testing at scale. Information presented is not clinical, diagnostic, or treatment advice for any particular patient. Providers should use their clinical judgement and experience when deciding how to diagnose or treat patients. Exact Sciences does not recommend or endorse any particular course of treatment or medical choice. The Cancerguard test was developed, and the performance characteristics validated by Exact Sciences Laboratories following College of American Pathologists (CAP) and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations. This test has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. The test is performed at Exact Sciences Laboratories. What Your Blood Really Says: Using Blood Tests for Preventive Health. Blood tests can reveal far more about your health than most people realize, often long before symptoms appear. In this episode, I explain how blood work can be used as a powerful preventive tool, not just to diagnose disease. We talk about what common blood tests can tell you about your metabolism, thyroid, hormones, nutrient status, and cardiovascular risk, and why “normal” lab ranges don't always mean optimal health. You'll learn why some nutrients need to be tested in whole blood or red blood cells rather than serum, which markers are often overlooked, and how to choose the right tests without overtesting. This episode is for anyone who wants to move beyond guesswork and use blood tests to gain clarity, track progress, and make more informed health decisions.Takeaways:Blood tests can reveal new health information.Early detection through blood tests aids in prevention.Doctors often check for severe health issues, not optimal health.Optimal ranges in blood tests are crucial for overall health.TSH is just one parameter for assessing thyroid health.Vitamin D levels should ideally be between 60 and 80.Magnesium should be tested in red blood cells for accuracy.Cortisol levels significantly affect energy levels throughout the day.Supplement dosages vary from person to person.Retesting is essential to confirm the effectiveness of health protocols.(blood tests, health insights, optimal ranges, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal health, cortisol, supplements, retesting)Would you like to book a health consultation for yourself or a loved one?
