Grant Dermody, Ross Garren and Pete Dammann join me on episode 120 for a retrospective on Paul DeLay.Paul is a harmonica player who may go under the radar for some but his unique approach to both the diatonic and chromatic harmonica, as well as his powerful vocals and his insightful and humorous songwriting have placed him firmly in the hearts of harmonica and music fans in the know.Paul was from Portland, Oregon in the north west United States where his first outfit was the Brown Sugar Blues band. He formed The Paul deLay Blues band in the early 1980s releasing four albums before a period of incarceration in the early 1990s saw him breakout with his highly original blues based material, all laced with harmonica playing quite unlike any other. His passing in 2007 has left a Paul deLay shaped hole which has never been filled.Links:Paul deLay website:http://www.pauldelay.com/Grant Dermody interview:https://www.harmonicahappyhour.com/grant-dermody-interview/Pete Dammann LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/peter-dammann-4777b916/Videos:Brown Sugar Blues Band - I Know My Baby Been Cheating:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IdB1HuB9soBurnin' album:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGa0DQNJ2aoFourteen Dollars In The Bank:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzqF1jNhO-YdeLay Does Chicago album:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaI0T2rhQQMOcean of Tears album:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IE1u-RBPfmIPodcast website:https://www.harmonicahappyhour.comDonations:If you want to make a voluntary donation to help support the running costs of the podcast then please use this link (or visit the podcast website link above):https://paypal.me/harmonicahappyhour?locale.x=en_GBSpotify Playlist: Also check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains most of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQPodcast sponsors:This podcast is sponsored by SEYDEL harmonicas - visit the oldest harmonica factory in the world at www.seydel1847.com or on Facebook or Instagram at SEYDEL HARMONICAS--------------------------------Blue Moon Harmonicas: https://bluemoonharmonicas.comSupport the show

But now lets turn our attention to the fourth of July and the shores of the Willamette where tens of thousands of fans gather at the Waterfront Blues Festival. Here's Peter Dammann to let you in on who's playing this time around.

It isn't quite time for the 2023 Waterfront Blues Festival but it is time for OMN's annual preview from the lips of festival Artistic Director and ace guitarist Peter Dammann. The festival is back at full strength after weathering covid. The same old beautiful grass-covered park alongside the Willamette July firsr to fourth. There will be some old favorites, others returning from long absences, newcomers we've heard about and some we will discover, that's one of the delights of the festival. The cruises, the food, the sun and the breezes all await as does the headliner, Buddy Guy who is advertising this appearance as his “Damn Right Farewell Tour.” Welcome back Peter Dammann.

Every year for years and years around this time, we've had the Waterfront Blues Festival Artistic Director Peter Dammann let us know who's playing even though it's April and the festival isn't until the fourth of July weekend. The big news is that after not having a festival in 2020 and having a truncated festival held at Zidell Yards in 2021 the festival will return, all four stages of it, to it's normal location at the…well, the Waterfront. Peter will run down all of the headliners and some of the locals as he has not yet booked all of our friends and neigbors. OMN will be there, no booth this year but lots of photographers and writers to bring you the flavor of the weekend. Right now, get ready to hear who's playing…straight from the curator's mouth…..Peter Dammann.

After a one-year absence due to the coronavirus, the Waterfront Blues Festival returns to Portland next week. Artistic Director Peter Dammann is here to talk about the new location for Portland's biggest party, what fans can expect this year, and some of his favorite memories from festivals past.
Want to do something that makes you feel like we're getting back to normal? One thing you can do is listen to this episode of Coffeeshop Conversations at Artichoke Music because unlike last summer when there wasn't one, Peter Dammann is here to tell us all about the 2021 Waterfront Blues Festival. You heard me! It's back. It's smaller and down the street from where it usually is but there are people at this moment knocking themselves out to make it happen. As he has been since the beginning of time, Festival Artistic Director and ace guitarist Peter Damman is in the Café to tell us pretty much everything we want to know about the festival. Doug Dammann: Elmer Ellsworth and His Zouaves In the summer of 1860, young lawyer Elmer Ellsworth and a civilian militia company of 50 men from Chicago set out on a twenty-city tour. In those days, volunteer militia companies held drill competitions, and Ellsworth hoped that his unit's new "Zouave" training (based on semi-gymnastic maneuvers modelled after those of French Algerian soldiers) would dominate the competition. The tour was a success beyond their wildest dreams. When war started and their training was needed on the battlefield rather than on the parade ground, the men who had accompanied Ellsworth found themselves in positions of leadership within the Union Army. Our June speaker, Doug Dammann, will explore Elmer Ellsworth's widespread influence on the northern army. Despite all of his drills and military training, Ellsworth's death, ironically, did not come in battle but rather early in the war, inside the Marshall House hotel in Alexandria, Virginia. Ellsworth succeeded in removing the Confederate flag raised by the building owner only to be shot and killed by the owner, James W. Jackson, as he descended the stairs from the building roof. Ellsworth's body would lie in state at the White House before being taken to his home state of New York for burial. Abraham Lincoln would call his close friend (almost a second son) Ellsworth "the greatest little man I ever met." Ellsworth's memory lived on throughout the war as "Remember Ellsworth" became a rallying cry for supporters of the Union. His death would spur even more volunteers to don the flashy Zouave attire Doug Dammann is the curator and site coordinator of the Kenosha Civil War Museum. A native of Lena, Illinois, and son of this Round Table's close friend Gordon Dammann, he received a BA in history from Kalamazoo College in 1996 and earned his Master's Degree in historical administration from Eastern Illinois University in 1999. Prior to coming to Kenosha, he worked at The National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick, Maryland, and The National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC.

Elisabeth Schellekens Damman discusses disagreement about taste in this episode of Aesthetics Bites. Aesthetics Bites is a podcast series of interviews with top thinkers in the philosophy of art. Sister Mary Corita, IHM (1918-1986), was a beloved artist and teacher whose role as the rebel nun continues to inspire contemporary audiences. Corita joined the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1936 when she was just eighteen years old, and soon after became an initially reluctant Art teacher at Immaculate Heart College. Corita remained part of the community on Franklin and Western Avenues in Hollywood until 1968 when Los Angeles archbishop Cardinal James Francis McIntyre, and other conservatives, targeted the orders reformist ways. Corita's Pop Art styled prints celebrating the presence of God in the most ordinary of everyday subjects (Mary is the juiciest tomato of all) drew the ire of McIntyre in particular. At age fifty, she took one of many unconventional steps and left the order to start life anew as an independent woman. In Corita Kent: Art and Soul: The Biography (Angel City Press, 2015), April Dammann traces Corita's path as an artist and religious woman who participated in the heady scene of the Los Angeles art world in the 1960s while engaging her own devout spirituality at the same time. Coritas journey into printmaking took her beyond the confines of the college to the world of the most famous artists and designers in Los Angeles including Charles Eames, John Cage, Edward Kienholz, and Tony Duquette. She interacted with Henry Miller, Anais Nin, and other members of Los Angeles literary avant-garde. Clad in her nuns habit, Corita was more than a picturesque observer of the scene, however. Her highly refined silkscreens combining word and image with meticulously placed colors transformed the medium. She culled subject matter from the ideas of thinkers and social commentators ranging from Goethe to Isaiah, to John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and radical priest and soul mate Daniel Berrigen. Corita's students, many of whose voices color Dammann's carefully researched book, were beneficiaries of Corita's aesthetic and intellectual explorations. As we reconsider the life of Corita Kent, we are confronted, in the quiet yet powerful manner of the artist herself, with a woman whose contributions to the radical forms of the 1960s are immense. Kirstin L. Ellsworth has a Ph.D. in the History of Art from Indiana University (2005) and currently, is an Assistant Professor of Art History at California State University Dominguez Hill.
Center for Advanced Studies (CAS) Research Focus EU Business Regulation (LMU) - HD
[Conf.] The New EU Financial Markets Architecture – International Conference | In the past years, global financial markets have seen an unprecedented wave of regulation. Regulators worldwide have significantly expanded regulatory reach to formerly unregulated markets (e.g. OTC markets and dark pools), trading practices (e.g. short sales), and market participants (e.g. fund managers), and intensified existing regulation such as disclosure duties or the ban on presumptively abusive trading practices. In the wake of this flood of ever more detailed and far reaching rules, policy makers, regulators and capital market scholars run the risk of losing sight of the "big picture", the fundamental questions and the overall challenges of financial markets regulation: Who should regulate capital markets? Who should enforce regulation? How much deceleration do financial markets need? How intensely should we regulate the distribution of financial products? What is the proper reach of disclosure duties? | Center for Advanced Studies LMU: 02.07.2015 | Speakers: Jens C. Dammann, Jill E. Fisch | Moderation: Lars Klöhn
