On this week's show we look at where some Americans are spending nearly $100 a month on streaming services. We also look at some new tech from Sony that promises big improvements for LED TVs. All that plus your emails and the week's news on this episode of the HDTV and Home Theater Podcast. News: Apple TV+, Jason Sudeikis confirm fourth season of ‘Ted Lasso' Lawsuits Hit TCL & Hisense: Are Their QLED TVs A Total Scam? Sony Launches Its First New 4K Blu-ray Player In Over Five Years Other: Spectrum is finally offering a streaming-only subscription for Dodgers Many Americans Spend Over $100 per Month on Subscription Services A recent survey by Bango reveals that nearly 25% of Americans spend over $100 per month on subscription services, including streaming platforms and retail memberships like Amazon Prime. This trend marks a shift from the perception of subscriptions as cost-effective alternatives to traditional cable and satellite services, as consumers face rising costs—streaming plans alone have increased by over 20% in the past two years. To manage expenses, many consumers are turning to subscription bundles, with the average American holding 5.4 subscriptions, including 2 that come through bundled packages. A significant portion of these bundles is linked to mobile phone plans, with 55% of subscribers benefiting from such arrangements. Additionally, 44% of users report receiving services for free through bundles that they previously paid for. Convenience is another critical factor driving consumers toward bundles, as 41% express frustration with managing multiple subscriptions across different apps. A strong demand exists for unified platforms, with 63% of subscribers seeking more options like Verizon's +play. Sony Develops Next-Generation Display System  Full Press Release  Sony has developed a next-generation display system featuring a high-density LED backlight with independent drive RGB (red, green, and blue) control, designed for large screens. This innovative technology allows each RGB color to emit light independently, resulting in high color purity and the ability to reproduce a vibrant, wide color gamut.  Key features of this display system include: Wide Color Gamut Performance: The system covers over 99% of the DCI-P3 color space and about 90% of the ITU-R BT.2020 standard, ensuring enhanced color reproduction.    Advanced Backlight Control Technology: Sony's proprietary technology allows for precise control of light gradation, enabling subtle hues and detailed shading across the entire brightness range. This is particularly beneficial for cinematic productions, where accurate color representation is crucial for conveying narrative expression. Accurate Color Reproduction by a Dedicated Control Processor By individually controlling the brightness of the densely packed RGB LEDs, it is possible to render bright areas vividly without white clipping and to delicately depict the nuances of light in dark areas without black crushing. Additionally, the display system is equipped with approximately twice the processing power and pixel correction technology compared to conventional local dimming processing, allowing the reproduction of subtle color differences and accurate colors without color shifts. The display system aims to enhance film production and home viewing experiences, aligning with Sony's commitment to supporting creators through professional-grade monitors used for color grading and reference. Mass production of this new display system is set to begin in 2025, with plans for integration into consumer televisions and displays for content creation.

Looked quite impressive but a few fast pans stuttered. Otherwise it looked and sounded quite good I ended up canceling my Discovery+ subscription since the same content is available with your Max subscription You can download titles for offline viewing. This was not possible with Discovery+ although it looks like this has been added to the Discovery app. I haven't checked for this feature in a while so it may have been possible for a while now Max subscription plans   Ad-Lite Ad-Free Ultimate Monthly price $10 $16 $20 Number of screens you can watch at the same time 2 2 4 Number of offline downloads 0 30 100 HD available Yes Yes Yes 4K Ultra HD available No No  Yes   LG C2 OLED 42” $900 up to 83” for $3950 α9 Gen 5 AI Processor 4K adapts to the content you're watching, automatically adjusting the TV's settings for improved picture and sound quality Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG webOS Google Assistant / Alexa We have come a long way in TV design and technology. The TV that the C2 replaced was a very old Samsung 720p LCD. The screen size was 37” and the TV barely fit into an armoir in our bedroom. The new LG C2 OLED is 42 inches and fits in the same area with no issues. The larger screen made a huge difference. The picture is stunning, clear, and sharp. I used the image presets as this TV is primarily used for night time viewing. I settled on ISF night mode. It seems a bit cool for my liking so I will probably tweak it to warm up the image. The color is quite good. LG claims the Evo panel's color saturation to be around 100% of the DCI-P3 color space. Other reviewers have noticed that the color desaturates with off angle viewing. In my very informal tests, this was barely noticeable to my eye. If I hadn't read anything about it I probably wouldn't have even noticed. But keep this in mind if you have seating that is off angle. Regardless, it's a ten fold improvement over the LCD it replaced. I have yet to really play with LG's filmmaker mode but even without it the TV has an incredible picture. The only thing I can compare it against was my old Panasonic plasma but much better.  I didn't do anything with the sound beyond the standard as it is typically watched at night so the sound is not usually at a loud level. If you buy a larger version of this TV we would recommend just connecting to a soundbar or better yet, a full fledged audio system. webOS has almost all the apps you'll need including IPTV providers with the exception of DirecTV Stream. If you are only streaming movies and some live TV, there is no need for an external box. But if there are some special news and information apps that your streaming box has it's easy enough to switch between the two. The LG Magic Remote wasn't very magical in my opinion. I mean as a regular remote it worked well. But the pointer version was just not precise enough for my liking. The remote has a microphone that allows you to search for content with your voice. There are dedicated buttons to take you directly to Netflix, Disney Plus, Prime Video, and Rakuten. There are even dedicated buttons for the Google Assistant and Alexa.  LG sells higher end models but if you are moving from a LCD based TV you will be really impressed with this TV. Save some money and go with the C2 model! This week it's all about CES 2022! So much to talk about including Sony getting into the electric vehicle market. We read your emails as well. Samsung Neo QLED - The powerful evolution of Samsung Neo QLED is built on Quantum Matrix Technology. It precisely controls Samsung's exclusive new Quantum Mini LED to express blacks, whites, and every shade in between, more accurately than ever. Enjoy great detail in dark and bright areas. Micro LED - MICRO LED is an inorganic, self-emitting LED designed to change the world of displays. Creating light and color on its own, MICRO LED delivers true-to-life color and contrast with optimum brightness in every scene. Discover stunning details on our biggest screen that surpass your greatest expectations. When you want more than one view, MICRO LED allows for four split-screen views. See up to four screens at once from a variety of sources — including the four HDMI ports — each giving you an immersive experience. The Frame - A minimalist-inspired design makes The Frame blend flawlessly with your interior. A slimmer profile, wider range of hues, and monochromatic back provide a sophisticated appearance from every angle. Connect the One Invisible Connection cable to discover what makes The Frame a modern masterpiece — on or off.³ The Premiere - Ultra-bright, high-resolution images are projected with cutting-edge Triple Laser Technology. The Premiere LSP9T uses a triple laser light source for dramatic home cinema viewing that nearly replicates a theater experience.⁸ Get precise color accuracy and incredible contrast with the Premiere LSP9T 4K Smart Triple Laser Projector.⁹ The Premiere LSP9T is the world's first HDR10+ certified projector for realistic, vibrant viewing. $3500 for 120” $6500 for 130” Eco Remote - combines a built-in solar panel with new wireless charging technology that uses radio waves emitted by Wi-Fi routers. It works by “collecting routers' radio waves and converting them to energy,” Samsung explains. And because it doesn't require any special Wi-Fi technology, it's compatible with almost every router in use today. The Freestyle - is a projector, smart speaker and ambient lighting device all rolled into one lightweight, portable device weighing only 830 grams (1.8 lbs). The Freestyle comes with full auto keystone and auto leveling features that allow the device to automatically adjust its screen to any surface at any angle, providing a perfectly proportional image every time. SmartThings Cooking -  A new service from Samsung SmartThings is designed to make your culinary journey seamless. An automatic Meal Planner powered by Whisk's Food AI recommends meals for the whole week, makes shopping lists with the ingredients you need, and connects to grocery retailers for one-stop shopping straight from the Family Hub™ refrigerator or your mobile screen. Recipe instructions can be sent directly to synced Samsung cooking devices to minimize hassles and mistakes. Samsung Health Smart Trainer on Samsung 2021 TVs: Samsung Health seamlessly transforms the home into a personal gym, and the new Smart Trainer4 feature tracks and analyzes posture in real-time, just like a personal trainer. During and post-workout, Smart Trainer provides feedback on form, helps you count your reps, and estimates calories burned. With video and interactive training via Bixby-enabled voice control, Samsung Health Smart Trainer elevates and personalizes the home workout experience. JetBot 90 AI+: Coming to the US 1H 2021, this new vacuum cleaner uses object recognition technology to identify and classify objects to decide the best cleaning path. LiDAR and 3D sensors allow JetBot 90 AI+ to avoid cables and small objects, while still cleaning hard-to-reach corners in your home. Also outfitted with a camera, JetBot90 AI+ is integrated with the SmartThings app to assist you with home monitoring. Samsung Bot™ Care is designed to use AI to recognize and respond to your behavior. It will be able to act as both a robotic assistant and companion, helping to take care of the details in your life. It will also learn your schedule and habits and send you reminders to help guide you throughout your busy day. Samsung Bot™ Handy: Also in development, Samsung Bot™ Handy will rely on advanced AI to recognize and pick up objects of varying sizes, shapes and weights, becoming an extension of you and helping you with work around the house. Sengled The Smart Health Monitoring Light bulb claims to read heart rate, body temperature and other vital signs through entirely non-invasive sensors. It uses a radar sensor instead of a passive infrared (PIR) sensor, meaning it can read through materials and detect more subtleties. Ideally, the higher sensitivity would allow for the light bulbs to detect different people, see movement through textiles and other complexities of off-skin health tracking. According to Sengled, a collection of Smart Health Monitoring Light bulbs connect via Bluetooth mesh to create a virtual map in your home, relying on several points of “view” for complete health tracking. To be clear, the light bulb doesn't have a camera or anything built in. It can't see or record you, just sense you. Kohler can now run you a bath with just a voice command PerfectFill - PerfectFill consists of a drain kit and digital valve that work together to draw the bath to your preferred temperature and depth. PerfectFill starts at $2,700; that doesn't include a Kohler spout and compatible Kohler bath. It also needs to be professionally installed. PerfectFill will be available to order in 2022. Kholer's Stillness Bath, which was teased at CES last year, will be available to purchase in 2022. It starts at $8,000 and incorporates that PerfectFill tech in a smart bathtub that combines water, light, fog, and aroma to create an “at home spa-like experience” Robern IQ Digital Lock Box — a smart lock box that fits in a bathroom vanity cabinet for storing medication and personal items. $450 Touchless Residential Bathroom Faucets starting at $199 Purist Suspend can be operated by the puck-shaped remote to turn the faucet on and off and adjust the temperature. The main concept here — beyond being quite the statement piece — is reducing counter clutter. With Suspend, your kitchen faucet will no longer be in the way when you're washing dishes (was it really ever?). The faucet hangs from the ceiling and has 180 degree rotation. LG LG OLED EVO Gallery Addition - The next evolution of Self-Lit Pixels brings a new definition of brightness. The latest LG OLED TV features the all-new Brightness Booster powered by an advanced processor making the display 30% brighter than before. This cutting-edge technology revolutionizes picture quality, producing deeper shades of black and brighter highlights to reveal incredible levels of detail and color. LG UltraGear Gaming Setup - This setup consists of a super fast IPS monitor with ATW Polarizer technology that supports high-fidelity color for reproducing vivid scenes. The monitor is compatible with next generation game consoles. Also included in the setup is the The LG UltraGear™ Gaming PC 17G90Q and the LG UltraGear speakers to elevate your gaming experience and deliver detailed, lifelike sounds. LG's smart TVs all run WebOS - now renamed WebOS 22 (for the year). The platform is getting a few updates, including the ability to add user profiles. Users will login and get their own mix of content—but not TV display settings. QNED Mini LED - LG is also updating its 4K QNED line for 2022.  They all feature updated Quantum Dot technology in which the Nano Cell is now an emissive layer. The crux of quantum dot is the clarifying of the light from Blue LED to running some through the Quantum Dots to run them green and then a Nano Cell layer that emits red light. LG claims a 90%+ DCI-P3 wide color gamut reproduction compared to the 70% coverage on traditional LED-LCD TVs. The use of Mini LEDs gives the displays more discrete control of black levels and dampen haloing. Their 8K displays have 2,400 local dimming zones. LG's Magic Motion Remote has also seen some improvements, thanks to a reduction in redundant buttons and a smaller overall profile.  LG Dolby Atmos Soundbars - LG has also implemented some notable improvements to is Dolby Atmos soundbars. In addition to a new dipole-style wireless surround speaker available in the company's flagship soundbar, LG is adding an up-firing speaker to the center channel to increase clarity, presence, and intelligibility for moments when voices can frequently get buried by otherwise explosive soundtracks for action sequences. Instaview Refrigerator - Simply knock twice to illuminate LG's largest, edge-to-edge InstaView™. See favorites in an instant without ever opening the door. Bring one of the hottest trends home with the Craft Ice™ maker that automatically makes batches of three or six slow-melting Craft Ice™ per day. The UVnano™ dispenser automatically removes up to 99.99% of bacteria on the nozzle after 24 hours.* Eve Systems' CES focus is on HomeKit, Matter, and Thread The Eve Outdoor Cam - The floodlight/security camera combo is expected to be available April 5 for $250. It's the end of the year, and that means that it's time to look back on the last 12 very strange months and see what positives we can pull out with Tom's Hardware's Best of 2021.Best CPUWhile AMD has been making huge advances in processors, Intel was falling behind. This year, however, the company came back strong in its newest offering - the Intel Alder Lake lineup. These new processors created two channels of cores - high performance and high efficiency. This allowed low-intensity tasks to be routed to the high-efficiency cores, while high-demand tasks got routed to performance cores. The end result is a processor that uses less electricity, creates less heat, and performs better in all scenarios. We went into more depth in Episode 273 when they premiered.Best Graphics Card2021 was a rough year for video cards, as manufacturing and supply chain issues made it nearly impossible to get ahold of (though we have recommendations in Episode 256 and Episode 276). But, one of the shining stars has been the Nvidia RTX 3060 12GB. This massively powerful graphics card came in at an impressive MSRP of only $329 (when you can get it at all). For that price you got a ton of GDDR6 RAM and is more powerful than the last generation's next level card (RTX 2070).Best Gaming MonitorThere are always a lot of new monitors, but none stood out quite like the MSI Optix MPG321UR-QD. This 32" monitor uses quantum dot technology to produce an impressive picture. In fact, in Tom's Hardware tests, the monitor produced 117 percent of the DCI-P3 color gamut, while also managing to be over 600 nits of brightness. If you have followed our screen conversation in the past, you know that a bright and colorful screen can be a hard ask, but MSI does it. And, the company has made the monitor available on sales throughout the season for as low as $799.Best KeyboardAvram is nothing if not picky about his keyboards. He once detailed his search for the perfect laptop, comparing different units of the same laptop model that all had different keyboard hardware. So, for the Akko 3098B to win Best of 2021, you know it's going to be a killer keyboard. He showed it off briefly in a recent episode while he was in the middle of his product review, and has really taken to it. The keycaps are comfortable and the hot-swappable switches make this a favorite. It can be used wired or wireless, over RF or Bluetooth. When used with Bluetooth, you can pair multiple devices to it at once and switch between them in less than a second.SummaryOf course, there are a lot more categories, and Avram details them in this episode. They include the Best Mouse (Razer Basilisk V3), Best Raspberry Pi Product (Raspberry Pi Pico), and Best Webcam (Dell Ultrasharp Webcam). Together they represent the very best that the year 2021 has had to offer in the PC component and peripheral space.

This week we explain what Wide Color Gamut is and how it affects your TV viewing experience. We also discovered a new remote that wants to be your Harmony Replacement. It's really sexy but it costs a pretty penny. Finally we discuss why you don't want to mount your TV over the fireplace. All that plus your emails and the week's news. Wide Color Gamut We mention wide color quite a bit when we talk about 4K TVs. But what does that mean? In general when we talk about wide color we mean "Redder" reds, "greener" greens, "bluer" blues. More specifically the color space covers 75.8%of the visible spectrum, the DCI-P3 digital cinema color space covers 53.6%. What can you expect? The improvement in color will not blow you away, but you can tell in a side-by-side comparison.  It's more pronounced in red and green. Some TVs will be capable of more colors than others, even if they are labeled WCG.  Look for a percentage of P3 color to determine Wide Color capability. The recent Hisense UST Projector is capable of 107% of P3 color YIO Remote Two Another remote is on the horizon and it looks to be an elegant Harmony replacement. And by elegant we mean expensive . It's available on Kickstarter for a pledge of 369 Euros and delivers in July 2022.   From the Kickstart page: With Remote Two you can control your smart home and multiple devices under one unified interface. No searching for apps on your phone. You get instant control at your fingertips. Remote Two runs fully locally and doesn't require subscriptions to function. Replace all your remotes with one and create activities to simplify control of your entertainment centre. Remote Two even comes with an open API, making it easy for the community to add support for new custom integrations. With Remote Two, you can control devices via WiFi, Bluetooth and - through the smart charging dock - infrared (IR). There is no need for a hub, other than the one you already own. Remote Two connects to your WiFi network and to your home automation system and can control your devices. The charging dock is not just charging the remote, but has its own smarts too. It has built in WiFi and Bluetooth to communicate with the remote. It has infrared LEDs all around to make sure you get a good coverage. We ship an IR extender in the box, so you can use that to control devices inside a cabinet. You can choose to send IR commands to the extender, the built-in IR LEDs or both. The dock can also learn IR commands from your old remotes, so if you cannot find the codes in a database, you can make Remote Two learn the IR commands. The remote looks amazing. It's the combination of a remote with buttons and a tiny tablet. The buttons you would want to be physical are and stuff like automation, activities, and other functions can be mapped to the small screen.  The only question is if it's worth the cost. We'll wait until July to possibly check it out. You shouldn't mount your TV above the fireplace. It's actually a terrible place for it Mounting a TV above a fireplace seems like the most logical spot. It's out of the way, looks nice and is often the most convenient place to put it in a room. However, there are serious issues with such placement. Full article here…

We have to assume this is a pre-release model that is being reviewed): If you have ever viewed the VPL-VW5000ES & thought that machine had a brilliant picture at 5,000 lumens, the purely stunning display chip combined with the newest laser lamp that puts out a whopping 10,000 lumens makes the 5000ES model look like a Triniton from the 1980's! I recently upgraded from the 5000ES to the GTZ380 in my “man cave” with a 165” SI gray slate 1.3 gain screen. If the blacks are brightness of the 5,000 had an amazing image, the dual data/motion flow chipsets and double the lumens combined make for a viewing experience that's so immersive that only in the most gorgeous scenes from a solid, full HDR 4K source do you sit back and both admire the engineering behind this beyond words projector's imagining-that you chuckle at how much you spent to be so fortunate to buy one. Hands down, there is no imagination left to better what already seems that the human eyes can't possibly see anything technologically “better”. After this machine was conceived, I'd have to think that engineers are being laid off- or have abandoned any future development as there is no possibility of any picture quality improvement beyond this unit. Has to be the end of the line for any sort of television or movie watching device innovation- no way anything could ever top this picture quality and brightness that's so full of color and absolutely zero stutter. I can now rest easy, my wife can't be upset at my A/V “addiction”, as this is the last TV/Projector I will ever need or purchase. To spin a quote from the movie Field of Dreams “Is this heaven?....no, this is Sony”! Level of expertise Advanced Where purchased In person Sony products owned 6+ Inteset 4-in-1 Universal With Logitech discontinuing the Harmony Remote we have received a lot of emails asking us about alternatives. There are options that use your smartphone or tablet as well as some high end remotes tied to home automation. For today's discussion we decided to go old school with a simple 4-in-1 Universal remote from Inteset (Int-422 $25.95).  The remote is preconfigured to work with streaming devices like the Apple TV, Xbox One, Roku (excluding Stick) and others right out of the box with dedicated buttons. These buttons can be reprogrammed with the device codes of the components you have in your system by looking them up in their online database.  Typically a setup like this removes remote control clutter but doesn't really do anything for simplicity of use. The Inteset remote has some nice features that make it a better remote than the typical all-in-one.  Volume Lock - Most people use a single device such as a TV, sound-bar, or receiver for audio. You can set up the remote so that the volume and mute buttons control the audio of that device no matter what other mode is selected on the remote. Channel Lock - Lock the number pad to control the tuner/cable/satellite box, so you can change the channels no matter what device mode you have selected. This may not be as important as the volume lock. But it did simplify watching TV on a cable box.  Punch-through Support - Similar to Volume and Channel Lock, any button can be set to send the same IR signal no matter what device mode is selected. Macro Support -  You can program up to 32 commands into a single button. So, for example, you could turn on or off all of your devices, and switch inputs. The multiple symbol buttons on the bottom of the remote can be used for your macros. But this old school harmony remote style. We could not find any codes for direct input switching. Rather you had to hit the input button and then scroll to the input you want and then hit select.  This method is fraught with errors and grief. In our opinion the macros are best suited for turning on and off the devices you want for the activity you are watching. Then switch the input, more than likely using your receiver, manually. There is a special code to program the remote's display button to bring up the smart features of your TV.  The remote itself feels good in the hands. The buttons are logically placed and easy to select. It has a backlight which helps in low light conditions. Not much else to say about it. It's a modern remote. Bottom Line The Inteset 422 is a great improvement over the Universal remotes of fifteen years ago. Locking the volume and numbers buttons individually to a specific device just makes it easier to use. The macros are a good improvement as well but not what we are used to with the Harmony. This remote is perfectly suited for the person who has a cable or satellite box running through a receiver then out to the TV. It will turn them all on and off, control the volume and change channels with no issues. A more complex setup can be made to work, but it will be cumbersome to program and use. This remote will find a home at Ara's mom's house where her two remotes will be reduced to one. You can't beat it for this type of use at $26!

Podcast #921: Optoma CinemaX P1 Review

Optoma CinemaX P1 Review For the past year or two we have been talking about removing our projectors and replacing them with very large format TVs. There are a few manufacturers that produce TVs greater than 85” in size and we were stuck in analysis paralysis. There is a video that accompanies this review. Please watch it to help understand the capabilities of this projector.  That is until Optoma announced and shipped the CinemaX P1 Ultra Short Throw Projector (Street Price $3,299.00). This projector can sit as little as 8” away from your screen and project an 85” image. You will need a screen specifically designed for UST use for this review we paired it with a 90” Elite Aeon CLR (Street Price $600). All in the setup cost $3,900.  Let's compare to what is out there in comparable size: Sony XBR-X850G 85” $2,300 LG 86UM8070PUA 86” $2300 Samsung QN82Q70RAFXZA 82” $3300 So yes it does cost a little more, but if you go up those last 5” to 90” you won't find a TV anywhere close in price. And if you wanted to, for an additional $200, you could slide the projector back a few more inches and have a 100” screen. There is no TV that is 100” anywhere near this price! Plus, this was easier to bring into the house and get setup and that includes assembling the screen! Features Smart Control (We did not use any of these features) -  You can control your Smart+ projector with voice control using your Amazon Echo and Google Home devices. IFTTT support enables interoperability with thousands of other smart devices.  Built-In Soundbar by NuForce (We used our 6.1 system and did not turn this on) - The integrated soundbar is designed to produce detailed sound with clear dialogue thanks to its two full-range drivers and two woofers within isolated, ported chambers. InfoWall (Was fun for five minutes then we turned it off)- Transform your wall or screen into your own personal assistant with the InfoWall customizable information display. Configure it to display your calendar, weather information, daily news, and more using the Optoma companion app on your compatible mobile device. SmartFIT (Very helpful feature) - This automatic geometry correction system helps ensure a hassle-free setup that produces properly squared-off images using just your smartphone. LaserGuard - Two built-in PIR sensors detect objects in the light path and automatically dim the light source. Optoma CinemaX P1 Smart 4K UHD Laser Cinema Features: Resolution: 4K UHD (3,840 x 2,160) Lumens: 3,000 ANSI lumens Contrast: Up to 1,500,000 with Dynamic Black enabled Color: REC.2020, DCI-P3 wide color gamut, HDR10 compatible Throw Ratio: 0.25:1 Image size: 85”- 120” OS: Android 8.0 / Oreo Remote Control: Bluetooth smart home remote with air mouse HDMI-ARC for streamlined setups and reduced cable clutter with popular 5.1 soundbars Other I/Os: 1x HDMI 2.0 (HDCP 2.2), 1x HDMI 2.0 (HDCP 2.2, HDMI-ARC), 1x HDMI 2.0 (HDCP 2.2, side), 1x USB 2.0 (4K media player), USB 2.0 power (side), USB (service), optical S/PDIF out, audio out (3.5mm, subwoofer compatible), RJ45 Setup Setup was a bit more complicated than the typical TV. First you have to assemble the screen which is not terribly difficult. But you do need to be mindful of the screen material so you don't fold or crease it. The screen attaches to the frame with velcro and must be pulled tight for a clean image. Elite screen has a video that we recommend you watch before assembling the screen. It will make things easier. Once completed the screen is mounted via two clips that our screwed into the wall. Elite provides drywall anchors which are plenty strong for this application. The screen is not very heavy at all.  Positioning the screen is a little tricky because the projector does not have lens shift. What we did was project a 90” inch image on the wall and then mount the screen. That sounds easy but before you do that you have to square up the image. You can't use the Smartfit on the bare wall because there is no black screen outline, which is required for the SmartFit algorithm to work. Instead we manually used the geometry settings to square the image. We then pulled the projector back on the TV stand until we had about a 91” mage on the wall. We marked the corners and made sure the screen was mounted within that space. Once the screen was hung will pulled out our phone and used the SmartFIT app and voila! The image got pulled into the screen. It was 99% perfect. There was one corner that need a very slight adjustment. For that we went back to the geometry settings and stretched the image to the corner and we were done! It seems like it was harder to do but I say it was easier than hauling a 85” TV upstairs. Plus there was far less packaging to deal with when it was all done. As far as the TV settings go we did some very minor tweeks, not a full calibration. The only things that were changes off of the default values were the following: Display was set to HDR, HDR Picture was set to Standard, Brightness was set to -2, Contrast to 13, Sharpness to 9. We also made sure the Pure motion was set to off. I recommend you watch the video to see how good the picture looks. We realize that with proper calibration you will see improvements and we may end up doing a full calibration in the future, but we wanted everyone to know a really good picture can be had without the need to spend and additional $300-$500. Performance This is the only thing that really matters. Can this projector replace a large format TV in a room with no real light control? Well the answer is yes! The picture is great when watching anything bright like any sporting event. You can even watch movies with some shadow detail. Although it's not the best. But really, what screen can do dark scenes with good shadow detail in full brightness anyway? We looked at this screen in full daylight viewing and in early evening viewing for the purposes of this review. We recommend watching the video on our youtube channel where you can judge for yourself the quality of the picture. Full Daylight In full daylight we could easily make out the detail in everything we watched with the exception of a few night scenes in Blackhawk Down. The 3000 lumens of laser light combined with the CLR Elite screen make a huge difference when compared to a typical projector. Colors are accurate and the detail is good. There are no issues with off angle viewing. To sum it up, you can watch this projector in full daylight and not feel like you are missing something. Evening As good as the daylight viewing is, evening (or blinds closed) is amazing! Everything we liked about the daytime is amplified at night. Colors are richer, detail is more visible, and contrast is enhanced. It's like you are watching a plasma TV. For the first time since the 4K UHD TV craze it felt like all the additional resolution mattered. The blacks look really good in the evening much better than in the daytime. While watching football, hockey, and baseball we did not notice any motion blur.  We did not game on this projector but being a 60Hz projector at it's highest refresh rate, we'd say there might be some lag for hard core gamers.  Other  The Projector uses an eight segment DLP. We did not see any rainbows during our testing.  There is no chance of image retention. The remote is Bluetooth and as such we were not able to add it to our Harmony Remote. We did enable HDMI control so when a signal was present the projector would automatically turn on. When the signal was absent the projector would turn off. The projector is reasonably quiet. If the projector was on with no audio you could hear it but it wasn't distracting. However with any audio coming through the system the projector was inaudible. Conclusion The Optoma CinemaX P1 is the projector/TV we have been looking for. You can watch sports and even movies in full brightness, but it really shows it's stuff in a dark(er) room. It has good blacks that get even better in the evening. The wide viewing angle means you can sit anywhere in the room and enjoy a stunning 4K picture. Sony Electronics Brings 16K-capable Display System to Consumers' Living Rooms with Crystal LED Residential Solutions PARAMUS, N.J., Sept. 12, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Electronics Inc. today announced the availability of its award-winning Crystal LED display system for home installation. Having initially introduced the technology for use in commercial and entertainment venues, Sony Electronics now offers residential configurations and installation, giving consumers an unrivaled home theater technology capable of displaying 8K HDR video content and beyond – up to 16K. Crystal LED is a modular technology, enabling it to be installed in virtually any desired size and resolution to accommodate consumers' needs and residential space availability. Sample residential configurations include: Full HD Size (18 Units) ~110-inch Diagonal ~8ft (W) x 4ft (H) 4K Size (72 Units) ~220-inch Diagonal ~16ft (W) x 9ft (H) 8K Size (288 Units) ~440-inch Diagonal ~32ft (W) x 18ft (H) 16K Size (576 Units) ~790-inch Diagonal ~63ft (W) x 18ft (H) Sony's Crystal LED direct view display system uses ultra-fine micro-LED measuring 0.003 mm² – half the width of a human hair – which are 100 times smaller than traditional LEDs. The display recently received a prestigious 2019 Display Industry Award for "Display of the Year" from the Society of Information Display, recognizing Crystal LED's unprecedented visual experience. The technology delivers crisp, blur-free moving images with high frame rate up to 120p for razor-sharp motion rendition that is far beyond the reach of conventional video. Additional technical highlights: HDR with high brightness (1,000 nits)  10-bit grayscale  Precise color reproduction  Extraordinary color gamut – 140 percent of sRGB  High frame rates up to 120p  Nearly 180-degree viewing angle  Spectacular 3D  Non-standard aspect ratios  99 percent black surface area for delivering high contrast and high resolution Each module (360×360-pixel) will cost $10,000. Which means a 1080p setup will need 18 modules costing $180,000 and will produce a screen that is 120 inches on the diagonal. A 4K-capable display will require 16 feet of wall width and produce a 220-inch screen. For that you will need 72 modules and a whopping $720,000. This week: seven days with iPhone 7 and Apple Watch Series 2—we’ll tell you what we love (and don’t) about Apple’s newest iPhone and Watch.  Plus: Hissgate, explained; auto-unlocking your Mac with an Apple Watch; and if you’re wondering how to use picture-in-picture mode on Youtube videos in macOS Sierra, we’ll reveal just how to get it working.   This episode supported by   Dollar Shave Club delivers amazing razors right to your door for a third of the price of what the greedy razor corporations charge.  Try it yourself with your first month free at DollarShaveClub.com/CultCast.   TunnelBear, the simple privacy app that makes it easy to browse privately and enjoy a more open internet. Visit GetTunnelBear.com to get your free TunnelBear today.   We also want to give Kevin MacLeod at incompetech.com a  thanks for the great music you hear on today's show.   On the show this week @erfon / @bst3r / @lkahney   Let the lovely lady Lisa enchant you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNDi4UYwrTs   iPhone 7 display is the best LCD ever tested http://www.cultofmac.com/445998/iphone-7-display-best-lcd-ever-tested/ Apple’s new LCD display was rated as “visually indistinguishable from perfect” when it comes to image contrast and intensity. The tiniest amount of color variation, seen when viewing the screen from an angle, also yielded top marks. The DisplayMate report calls the touchscreen display the “crown jewel of the smartphone” One thing that gives the iPhone 7 display a competitive advantage is its adoption of two standard color gamuts: The new DCI-P3 wide color gamut used in 4K UHD TVs, and the smaller sRGB/Rec.709 gamut traditionally used in digital cameras, TVs, computers and most other consumer devices. The test also found that the iPhone 7’s peak brightness can only be achieved when Automatic Brightness is turned on. This prevents users from draining their battery in a flash by accidentally keeping the slider all the way up.   Hissgate: iPhone 7 Plus emits strange noise when under heavy load http://www.cultofmac.com/445972/hissgate-iphone-7-plus-emit-strange-noise-heavy-load/ Some iPhone 7 Plus owners are reporting that Apple’s new devices emit a strange hissing noise when performing processor-intensive tasks. And no one is sure what’s causing it. It appears that Hissgate only effects a small number of devices. Cult of Mac has not been able to replicate the hissing problem on any of our new iPhones. Engadget theorized that it could be a “coil whine” and is likely a small manufacturing defect instead of an overall design flaw. Apple looks to be replacing phones which present the issue   Apple Watch Series 2 review: A tick closer to perfection http://www.cultofmac.com/445874/apple-watch-series-2-review/ Buster For the past 16 months, Apple’s wearable and I have had an on-again, off-again relationship. Apple Watch Series 2 is supposed to be wicked fast at this, but there’s just one problem. The device’s screen never shows “GPS” or another indicator to prove it’s connected. You just have to take it on faith that there’s a connection behind the scenes. It still can’t track your elevation. There’s a huge difference in difficulty between running 5 miles on flat roads verses 5 miles with a 2,000-foot elevation gain. The only way to get your elevation data is to pack your iPhone along for the ride. This watch is screaming fast. I didn’t notice any major gains in battery life, so it’s likely that all the extra juice is being used to power the new GPS chip and display.

Apple announces updates to their iMac line–the 21.5 iMac is now Retina 4K. The big news for digital media creatives is the expanded color gamut of the new iMacs. Apple says this is achieved by shifting the Retina display away from standard white LEDs to advanced red-green phosphor LEDs. Now all three colors — red, green, and blue — are more equally represented and show off real-world color with more balance and precision. The new color gamut is based on the DCI-P3 color space - once only available in high-end pro gear. The new displays allow for 25% more colors to be differentiated on screen. It seems like we’re stuck on old design conventions when it comes to cameras. It's like how the first automobiles looked like the horse buggies they replaced. Will camera manufactures finally break away from the DSLR and camcorder form factor and embrace new designs that help us as digital media creatives to embed ourselves in the action and capture the images we want without getting in the way? It looks like DJI - yes, the drone juggernaut - is doing just that with the release of the a clever new handheld camera and gimbal system called the OSMO.
