If you've ever found yourself saying, “I'll be happy when…” — when the house is clean, when the kids are older, when you finally get that promotion or dream kitchen — you're not alone. Maybe you're always chasing the next goal, the next purchase, the next big thing… but somehow, happiness still feels out of reach. In this episode, I'm getting real about something I've been struggling with for years: destination addiction. It's that constant feeling of needing more to finally feel content. Whether you're in full hustle mode or feeling a little lost between “next big things,” this episode is your permission slip to slow down, breathe, and start appreciating the incredible life you're living right now. ✨ In this episode, I talk about: What the “hedonic treadmill” really means — and how it keeps us stuck How society, social media, and even ADHD feed into our addiction to “more” The emotional crash that comes after a big milestone Why midlife crises aren't what we think they are How to raise your “baseline” and feel truly content again Simple but powerful ways to practice gratitude and presence every day

What if your greatest business challenge could become your launchpad into thought leadership? Today, Bill Sherman sits down with Aaron Marcum, visionary behind Breakaway 365 and bestselling author of EntreThrive, to explore how a journey from entrepreneur to industry thought leader unfolds—often unintentionally. Aaron shares how his frustration with data gaps in the home care space led to the founding of a data analytics company and, unexpectedly, a national reputation as a thought leader. Along the way, he leveraged the insights of thinkers like Brian Tracy and Michael Gerber, and later deepened his impact through a Master's in Applied Positive Psychology under the guidance of Dr. Martin Seligman. Aaron breaks down how storytelling with data shifted his role from CEO to an in-demand industry voice, fueling brand growth, product evolution, and ultimately, a lucrative exit. But he didn't stop there. With EntreThrive, he's now equipping entrepreneurs to beat burnout, overcome inertia, and find lasting fulfillment. Whether he's on stage, coaching leaders, or writing his next big idea, Aaron exemplifies how thought leadership evolves with intention and legacy in mind. He doesn't just teach frameworks—he lives them. And his mission? To empower other coaches and entrepreneurs to do the same, with impact that extends beyond business and into family, travel, and values. Three Key Takeaways: • Thought Leadership Can Be Accidental—But It Shouldn't Stay That Way: Aaron began as a consumer of thought leadership, applying insights from Brian Tracy and Michael Gerber to his business. Over time, he evolved into a recognized voice in the home care industry by solving real problems with data, eventually becoming an intentional and strategic thought leader. • Data + Storytelling = Impact: His ability to interpret data and turn it into actionable insights transformed his brand visibility, customer engagement, and exit valuation. By controlling the narrative through thought leadership, he elevated his company's reputation and market value. • Purpose Drives the Next Chapter: After exiting two companies, Aaron continues to lead with purpose—not for profit, but for impact. Through EntreThrive and Breakaway 365, he's focused on coaching entrepreneurs to overcome burnout and thrive, combining positive psychology, personal experience, and a calling to serve others. If you're exploring how thought leadership can evolve from personal insight to organizational strategy, this episode offers complementary perspectives. In Discovering Thought Leadership, Mark Smith shares his journey from HR research to establishing a formal thought leadership role at SHRM, navigating internal structures to align research with actionable business goals.
Daria Burke is an author, executive, and healer-at-heart. She's also a grandchild grieving for her grandmother and a daughter estranged from her parents. In this episode, Daria shares the profound impact of losing her maternal grandmother at age seven and how that early loss reverberated through her life. This loss and grief exist alongside the immense healing she's done around growing up in poverty, childhood trauma, and her parents' absences, addictions, and the eventual estrangement from them. With the recent release of her memoir, Of My Own Making, Daria opens up about the moment, decades later, that reawakened the grief for her grandmother - finding a newspaper article about her fatal car accident. That discovery, and ensuing grief, started a new chapter in Daria's healing process. In our conversation, we talk about inherited trauma, the emotional weight of estrangement, the invisible grief of childhood neglect, Daria's healing practices, and how she stays connected to her grandmother through what she calls “love taps.” Key Topics: What role Daria's grandmother played in her early childhood The ongoing impacts of childhood grief and unprocessed trauma How truth-telling is part of healing The collective grief she grew up around in Detroit of the 1980's Uncovering the grief she buried after her grandmother died Grieving for family members who are still alive Grief Practices Daria Shares: Giving herself permission to cry freely Meditative practices to connect with her grandmother Volunteering on holidays and creating new rituals Finding signs from her grandmother in the world around her Daria Burke is an American writer, speaker and award-winning business leader. A marketer by trade and a seeker at heart, Daria is a storyteller and sense-maker, weaving together personal experience and the science of healing and transformation to explore new ways of understanding how we choose who we become. This passion led her to complete Dr. Tara Swart's Neuroscience for Business course at MIT and Positive Psychology and Well-Being at Stanford, taught by Dr. Daryn Reicherter, an international expert in trauma psychiatry. Her debut memoir, OF MY OWN MAKING (April 2025) explores trauma, neuroplasticity, and Post-Traumatic Growth through the lens of her own healing journey. Kiese Laymon called it “as profound a book about the treacherous experience of befriending ourselves as I've read this decade.” Part memoir, part methodology, OF MY OWN MAKING blends personal narrative with scientific insight, Daria inspires readers to reimagine the narratives that define their lives. He found that his interests drew him to teaching improv. Nathan Keats has delved into researching improv, one major project being with autistic people. He is an expert on autistic people, and we discussed the terms that have been use for autistic people that does not honor their individuality. We spoke several years ago, and I was delighted to connect with him again. He is a Lecturer in Health and Social Care at the University of Sunderland in London. Welcome to Strategy Skills episode 546, an interview with the authors of Radical Listening: The Art of True Connection, Prof. Christian van Nieuwerburgh and Dr. Robert Biswas-Diener. Most conversations barely scratch the surface, because true connection isn't just about hearing words, it's about listening with purpose and presence. In this episode, Prof. Christian van Nieuwerburgh and Dr. Robert Biswas-Diener introduce the concept of Radical Listening: an intentional, culturally aware approach to making others feel seen, heard, and valued. Drawing from their research and coaching experiences, they explain why our intentions behind listening matter just as much as the act itself and how distractions, politeness, and even the need to be right can undermine true connection. They share practical strategies leaders can use to build stronger teams, navigate conflict, and create space for deeper conversations, even across cultural differences. Prof. Christian van Nieuwerburgh (PhD) is a leading academic and executive coach with an international reputation. He is Professor of Coaching and Positive Psychology at RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences (Ireland) and Principal Fellow at the Centre for Wellbeing Science at the University of Melbourne (Australia). Christian delivers consultancy, training, and executive coaching globally, regularly presenting in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the Middle East. He is passionate about motorcycling, writing, and coaching. Dr. Robert Biswas-Diener is a researcher, author, and consultant with 75 peer-reviewed academic articles and over 27,000 citations. His previous books include The Upside of Your Dark Side (New York Times bestseller, 2014) and the 2007 PROSE Award winner, Happiness. He has presented keynotes to Lululemon, Deloitte, Humana, AARP, the World Bank, and others. In 2024, Thinkers50 named Robert one of the “50 most influential executive coaches in the world.” He lives in Portland, Oregon, and enjoys drawing and rock climbing. She's the author of The Secret To Peak Productivity, a sought-after speaker and advisor to companies like Microsoft and KPMG, and one of the first 600 people in the world to earn a master's in Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. In this conversation, Tamara shares the results of her multi-year study - the first of its kind - on how leaders influence meaning in the workplace. She introduces the three core drivers of meaningful work: community, contribution, and challenge, and explains why they're more relevant than ever in a world grappling with burnout, disconnection, and shifting values around work. We also talk about the lasting impact of the pandemic, the rise of employee apathy, and how social media has warped our collective expectations about fulfillment. Tamara, who teaches at both the University of Pennsylvania and Boston College, blends her academic insight with a deeply human perspective - reminding us that meaning is not just a nice-to-have, but a business imperative. I think it's such an important book for parents of autistic children to read, as it shares insights into what our kids ultimately need to grow up as people who can advocate for their needs and invent new ways of living, loving, and being that work with their disability rather than against it. In this conversation, we discussed the journey of self-acceptance for autistic individuals and the cultural shifts happening around neurodivergence. Devon shared insights on how parents can support their children in embracing their authentic selves while navigating a world that often prioritizes conformity. And we also talked about the impact of generational trauma on family dynamics and why redefining success beyond societal norms is crucial for long-term well-being, and much much more. There are more adults discovering their own neurodivergence through parenting their own neurodivergent child, and I think Devon's book and everything he shared in this conversation can help anyone who is trying to live more authentically with their autism AND any parent who is raising an autistic child that wants to consider what life looks like for their child at various stages of life. This is a great one. Have a listen and please share this episode in your communities. About Dr. Devon Price Devon Price, PhD, is a social psychologist, professor, author, and proud Autistic person. His research has appeared in journals such as the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, and the Journal of Positive Psychology. Devon's writing has appeared in outlets such as the Financial Times, HuffPost, Slate, Jacobin, Business Insider, LitHub, and on PBS and NPR. He lives in Chicago, where he serves as an assistant professor at Loyola University Chicago's School of Continuing and Professional Studies. Things you'll learn from this episode Why self-acceptance is an ongoing, internal process that can be especially challenging for neurodivergent individuals How despite progress, the world remains largely inaccessible to disabled people, making advocacy and practical life planning essential Why friendship and love are common struggles for autistic adults and why support, self-awareness, and empowerment rather than forced conformity is critical Where we are now — cultural awareness of neurodivergence is growing yet parents still face pressure to make their children fit societal expectations Why the key to a fulfilling life as an autistic adult means questioning societal norms, addressing generational trauma, and embracing authentic self-expression Resources mentioned Unmasking for Life: The Autistic Person's Guide to Connecting, Loving, and Living Authentically by Dr. Devon Price Devon Price on Substack Devon Price on Medium Unmasking Autism: Discovering the New Faces of Neurodiversity by Devon Price, PhD Laziness Does Not Exist by Devon Price, PhD Devon Price on Instagram Autistic Self-Advocacy Network (ASAN) Sarah Casper and Comprehensive Consent The World of Estranged Parents Forums (IssenDai) Learn more about your ad choices. On this episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, we engage with psychologists Dr. Christian van Nieuwerburgh and Dr. Robert Biswas-Diener to explore the concept of radical listening. We discuss why effective listening is challenging in today's fast-paced, technology-driven world and identify cultural and emotional barriers that hinder genuine communication. We'll also highlight how radical listening can transform personal and professional relationships by making others feel seen, valued, and heard through active curiosity and empathy. This episode serves as a call to action for listeners to cultivate deeper connections through intentional and empathetic listening practices. You're listening to Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different. We are the real dialogue podcast for people with a different mind. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go. Introduction to Radical Listening Christopher sets the stage by introducing his esteemed guests, Dr. Christian van Nieuwerburgh and Dr. Robert Biswas-Diener. He poses them a critical question: why do so many people struggle with listening effectively? This question serves as the foundation for a deep dive into the nuances of listening and its impact on human connection. Dr. van Nieuwerburgh begins by highlighting a paradox: despite being born with the ability to hear, many individuals fail to listen well. He attributes this to several factors: our current fast-paced modern lifestyles, technological distractions, and each person's internal emotional barriers. Dr. Biswas-Diener adds that cultural dynamics play a significant role in shaping our listening habits. In Western societies, individualism often leads to conversations becoming competitions for airtime. People frequently listen with the intent to respond rather than to understand, resulting in superficial interactions. This "waiting to talk" mentality is a significant barrier to genuine listening. The Importance of Curiosity Chistopher shares his personal journey of self-discovery, emphasizing the importance of personal development in improving listening skills. He recalls a coach who taught him that what many people call listening is often just waiting for their turn to speak. This insight underscores the need for a shift in mindset. Dr. van Nieuwerburgh agrees and adds that a key aspect of radical listening is approaching conversations with curiosity. When individuals genuinely seek to understand others, they create a space for deeper connection. This involves asking them open-ended questions, avoiding assumptions, and practicing patience and letting the other person finish their thoughts without interruption. Cultural Influences on Listening The conversation shifts to the impact of technology and social media on listening habits. Christopher points out that many platforms prioritize self-promotion and broadcasting over genuine interaction. This environment fosters a culture of "me first," where individuals are more concerned with sharing their own experiences than engaging with others. Christopher also reflects on the teachings of Stephen Covey, who emphasized the importance of seeking first to understand before being understood. He contrasts this with the current trend of self-centered communication, where individuals prioritize their own narratives over listening to others. Dr. Biswas-Diener acknowledges this shift and highlights the need for a rebranding of listening practices to emphasize connection rather than mere comprehension. To hear more from Dr. Christian van Nieuwerburgh & Dr. Robert Biswas-Diener and how Listening can be a superpower in everyday life, download and listen to this episode. Episode Title: Pesach Seder: Breakthroughs Instead of BreakdownsFor some, the Pesach Seder has been a difficult, challenging, or even boring experience. But what if it could be something more? In this conversation with my husband, Rabbi Schusterman, and Rabbi Shais Taub, we explore the deeper mindset behind the Seder—how to shift from feeling stuck in old narratives to creating new, positive experiences. Tamara Myles is an instructor of Positive Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania and is an accomplished consultant, trainer, and international speaker. She is a leading global authority on meaning at work and she is the author of the book, "Meaningful Work.” Tamara's work has been featured in FastCompany, Business Insider, and Forbes, among other publications. In this episode we discuss the following: Given that we spend one third of our time at work, it's hard to feel like life is meaningful if work isn't. Sometimes it just requires a mental shift to make work meaningful. For example, a data center worker realized she wasn't just connecting wires, she was connecting people, and even saving lives given all the industries that depended on the data center. When a young guest at the Ritz Carlton left their stuffed animal behind, the workers didn't just return the stuffed animal. They also took pictures of the stuffed animal enjoying an extra-long vacation at the resort. To make work meaningful, strive for community, contribution, and challenge. And then try to help others experience meaning as well. Hey team! Today, we dive deep with Dr. Devon Price, a social psychologist known for his groundbreaking work on neurodiversity and societal expectations. Dr. Price, who identifies as transgender and autistic, brings a wealth of experience and personal insight to our discussion, focusing on the complexities of masking in neurodivergent individuals. Price graduated with a BA in psychology and political science from Ohio State University in 2009, and he obtained his MS and PhD from Loyola University Chicago, where he has been teaching as a clinical assistant professor at the School of Continuing and Professional Studies since 2012. You can find Dr. Price's research in journals such as the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, and the Journal of Positive Psychology. Dr. Price is also the author of the books Laziness Does Not Exist, Unmasking Autism, and Unlearning Shame. His new book Unmasking for Life is set to be released on March 25th - so if you're listening to this when it comes out tomorrow. I imagine with those book titles; you might have a good sense of where this episode is heading - although I will say that despite Dr. Price's focus on autism, these concepts absolutely apply to ADHD as well, and we definitely get into how they differ. In this episode, we explore the survival strategies behind masking and how these can morph into rigid personas that are hard to shed. We also unpack the nuances of camouflage and compensation in social interactions, the strategic yet often oppressive need to conform, and strategies for managing and minimizing masking in daily life. Dr. Price's expertise is not only academic; his lived experience enriches our understanding of these dynamics, making this episode a must-listen for anyone navigating the intricacies of neurodivergence. With that in mind, we can make conscious choices about how and when we want to be masking. While it can be hard to find places to authentically be yourself and unmask, it's important to find these spaces. These can be with friends and family, or if those are hard to find, there are many online communities to explore. For some, consistently masking can make it hard to remember who is under the mask. To help remove that mask, you can gradually work on introducing authentic traits or behaviors in safe spaces to reduce the psychological strain of constant masking. Additionally, you can consider professional guidance to help with unmasking, focusing on therapy that respects and understands neurodivergent experiences.
