And we explore the other side too - how accepting help can soothe the body, build trust, and deepen our sense of belonging. This episode feels particularly important in our current times. Send one way text to Rev Rachel When the world feels overwhelming—whether it's family struggles, the pain of watching a loved one in addiction, or the heaviness of our collective challenges—it's easy to believe that peace will come once everything “out there” finally settles down. But in Soul Recovery, we learn that waiting for the outside world to change keeps us trapped in fear and frustration. The real transformation begins when we turn inward. In this episode, I share how I've been navigating real-life challenges with my family, including my son's addiction, and how the Soul Recovery process reminds us that we are powerless over others—but never powerless within ourselves. When we shift our focus from control to compassion, from fear to love, we begin to find clarity, strength, and the ability to show up with grace in even the most difficult circumstances. Turning within isn't an escape from life—it's the way to live it more fully, with peace and sovereignty. This podcast is for educational purposes only and is not allied or representative of any organizations or religions, but is based on the opinions and experience of Rev. How To Achieve and Have the Mindset of Success We hear it everywhere: “You need the mindset of success.” But what does that actually mean? And more importantly — how do you get it? In this episode of the Personal Development Unplugged podcast, I'll take you beyond the vague definitions and straight into a practical process you can use right now. We'll cut through the fluff and create a real mindset of success — one where your mind and body are fully aligned toward a specific goal. You'll discover how to: Get ultra clear and specific about what you really want (not what you don't want). Write it down in a way that seeds your unconscious mind. Identify the empowering beliefs that fuel your success. Step into the physiology and psychology of having already achieved your dream. Anchor it all with a simple word that triggers your success state whenever you need it. This isn't about “thinking positive.” It's about aligning your thoughts, feelings, and actions so you naturally move toward your goals. By the end of this episode, you'll not only understand what the mindset of success is — you'll have it. Key Takeaway: Success isn't vague — it's specific. Write it down, embody it, and live it. Key Takeaways (bullet points) Success without specificity is meaningless — define exactly what you want. Writing your goals down engages your unconscious mind and makes them real. Shift from “I don't want X” to “I want Y” to avoid reinforcing negatives. Empowering beliefs like “I've got this” or “I deserve this” fuel motivation. Visualisation plus physiology creates a success state you can step into now. Anchor your mindset with a single word to trigger confidence and focus anytime. Today we're celebrating our 5th birthday — five years, 260 episodes, countless destinations, and some of the most inspiring voices in travel. When I started this show back in 2020, I never could have imagined the incredible community that would form around it, or how many of you would join me each week to dream, to learn, and to reflect on the meaning of travel. So to mark this milestone, I wanted to do something a little different. Instead of a hotelier, a guide, or a travel CEO, I invited three of our most dedicated listeners — Max, Torey, and Nikhil — to join me. Each of them brings their own stories: from safari sunsets and personalized luxury touches, to family adventures and how travel has shaped their careers and worldviews. How can military-honed resilience and positive psychology supercharge physician leadership?  In this episode of Bootstrap MD, host Dr. Mike Woo-Ming interviews Dr. Christopher Colombo, as he shares his path from elementary school dreams of medicine to active-duty training, and his post-retirement "Lego break" before embracing part-time ICU night shifts and executive coaching. Inspired by a fellow physician's transition, he pursued training in executive and positive psychology coaching to address the personal-professional overlaps that frustrated him—like compartmentalizing life domains without recognizing the "you" as the common denominator.  The discussion dives into military lessons on resilience (e.g., Army-adopted programs from UPenn's Barbara Fredrickson), the pitfalls of large-organization training, and why authenticity matters in leadership. Dr. Colombo offers mindset shifts for new leaders: acknowledge emotions and relationships, control primitive responses via storytelling, and use techniques like drafting "flame emails" to yourself. He emphasizes building trust through personal "why" alignment and avoiding cognitive traps like "should" or "must." A vital listen for physicians eyeing leadership or coaching, blending clinical credibility with life-changing insights. Three Actionable Takeaways: Acknowledge Emotions in Leadership – Suppress less, embrace more: Build relationships by understanding your team's personal "why" and framing missions accordingly. Control reactions by pausing to re-story stimuli (e.g., "That driver isn't plotting against me") before responding. Draft 'Flame Emails' to Yourself – When rage hits from an email, reply to your own address, vent fully, then step away. Return calmer to craft (or delegate) a measured response—preventing regrettable sends and honing emotional regulation. Pursue Authentic Alignment – Identify your core values (e.g., excellence over winning) to bridge personal and professional life. Seek a "cognitive sparring" partner for breakthroughs, ensuring you're effective, not just right. About the Show: Bootstrap MD is the ultimate podcast for physician entrepreneurs looking to escape traditional healthcare and control their financial futures. Hosted by Dr. Mike Woo-Ming, a successful physician, entrepreneur, and investor, the show delivers actionable insights on starting businesses, creating passive income, and navigating healthcare entrepreneurship. Featuring interviews with industry leaders, physicians, and experts in telemedicine and digital health, it's your guide to building a profitable, fulfilling career.  Tune in weekly at  http://bootstrapmd.com  About the Guest: Dr. Christopher Colombo is a retired Army critical care physician with 24 years of service, including deployments, is co-founder and president of Functional Mentoring (functionalmentoring.com). This quote from David Roberts seems to say so much that could be useful... important... maybe essential, for us today: “Hope isn't about the future as much as it is about the present." I leave you with a reflection to journal about or ponder over - and if you feel doubt or fear or anger come in that's ok, let them know there's space for them too - and ask the question againWhat makes you hopeful? With loveHenny xPS: This is the link to the episode I mention - recorded with the ever wise Susan McCulley, back in season 4.   “One powerful, overlooked aspect of colorectal cancer survivorship is the emotional and identity transformation that our survivors undergo—and really how little space is given in the clinical arena for that. No one really talks about this ‘invisible recovery.' Facing mortality can lead to prolonged changes is values, relationships, and life goals. And these experiences aren't captured in lab results or imaging scans, but they really shape how survivors live, love, and heal and continue with their lives,” ONS member Kris Mathey, DNP, APRN-CNP, AOCNP®, gastrointestinal medical oncology nurse practitioner at The James Cancer Hospital of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, told Jaime Weimer, MSN, RN, AGCNS-BS, AOCNS®, manager of oncology nursing practice at ONS, during a conversation about colorectal cancer survivorship. Highlights From This Episode “As of the most recent data, more than 1.5 million people in the United States are living as colorectal cancer survivors. So this includes not only those who are currently undergoing active cancer treatment but also those who have completed treatment and ultimately are hopefully in remission. Just a reminder that colon cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States and it's the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths.” TS 1:53 “Our colorectal cancer survivors may have significant barriers when receiving this comprehensive survivorship care, and these challenges can affect not only their physical recovery but their emotional well-being and, ultimately, their long-term health outcomes. We as oncology nurses do play a pivotal role in identifying and addressing these barriers. So these can include fragmented care. Who's caring for these patients? That care coordination between the oncologist and the oncology team and then the primary care providers and team. Limited access—so our patients that may have geographic limited access or also financial- or insurance-related obstacles to follow-up services.” TS 9:10 “Our nurses can also facilitate the communication between specialists and primary care providers, so making sure that we're sending records, keeping those lines of communications open. Also, nurses can provide that psychosocial support, so our screening for distress and also advocating and supporting for referral to counseling or support groups for a patient. Nurses can also act as navigators to guide these patients through complex care systems.” TS 11:21 “Some of the recommended changes—nutrition—enhancing and emphasizing fruits, vegetables, that colorful plate, with whole grains. Limit those red and processed meats, and reduce sugary drinks and alcohol. I know we will all have those patients who have read things or cancer myths about, ‘Oh, cancer feeds on sugar, so I shouldn't drink anything or eat anything with sugar,' and maybe addressing that, just really emphasizing the well-rounded meals.” TS 19:57 “When we think about [ourselves], ‘Well, I don't have an implicit bias,' but we may not think about what that is. Some common preconceived assumptions are that survivorship equals a cure. And this assumption may overlook that chronic symptoms or those late effects and emotional needs of long-term survivors. So knowing that when a patient is coming to us on surveillance, they may be cured; they may not have active cancer, but they're still dealing with some of those chronic symptoms—and acknowledging that.” TS 30:37 “There's an assumption that an ostomy equals poor quality of life, and this may stigmatize patients and discourage open conversations about adaptation and support. A couple weeks ago, I volunteered at the Pan Ohio Hope Ride, which is with the American Cancer Society, and several states have a ride that's similar. And there was a patient riding, and I could tell over his jersey that he had an ostomy bag underneath that. And I just looked at him and I thought, ‘That's amazing. You are still functioning, still living, still riding a bike throughout the entire state of Ohio with an ostomy.' So he's still having that good quality of life. That doesn't stop him from living.” TS 31:39

Jill shares insights from her research and book, which redefine bravery beyond the conventional stereotypes of fearlessness and into meaningful action in the face of fear. Mary and Jill dive deep into understanding bravery as critical to overcoming life's challenges and growing into one's authentic self. This episode explores how bravery is not just about major heroic acts but involves everyday courage to pursue meaningful goals. Jill elucidates the psychological frameworks and evidence-based strategies for cultivating bravery, drawing from her background in positive psychology and personal experiences, including her transformation from a military officer to a motivational leader in corporate settings. About the Guest: Jill Schulman is an expert in bravery and the science of overcoming fear. She has studied positive psychology at the University of Pennsylvania under Dr. Marty Seligman, the founder of the field. In this episode of the Addict to Athlete podcast, Coach Blu Robinson speaks with Josh Dickinson about the transformative power of flow states in recovery. They explore how movement, particularly surfing, can facilitate healing and personal growth. Josh shares insights from his experience as an addictions counselor and trauma specialist, emphasizing the importance of engagement and mindfulness in therapeutic practices. The conversation delves into the science behind flow, the stages of the flow cycle, and the spiritual connection that can arise from activities like surfing. They also discuss the balance between adrenaline and flow states, and how these experiences can enhance self-esteem and overall well-being. Finally, Josh provides information about his program, Resurface UK, which combines therapeutic practices with engaging activities to support individuals on their recovery journey. Takeaways Flow states can significantly enhance recovery processes. Engagement in activities like surfing promotes mindfulness. The flow cycle consists of struggle, release, flow, and recovery phases. Adrenaline and flow states serve different purposes in healing. Self-esteem is crucial for individuals in recovery. Movement therapy can lead to deeper emotional processing. Therapeutic activities should follow flow experiences for best results. Spiritual connections can be fostered through nature and movement. Positive psychology principles can be integrated into recovery. Programs like Resurface UK offer innovative approaches to healing. In this bonus recording I share three observations, each with a reflective question that may support your own compassionate self-enquiry.When you reflect on the themes we covered in last weekend's episode: Here Was Yesterday's There: The Habit of Looking Ahead (S18E1)Where has your mind been living today - and what happens when you gently return to now?Is there a thought you've been carrying that belongs to a time that hasn't yet arrived? What beauty is already here, quietly waiting to be noticed? And, of course, if you haven't yet had a chance to listen to the episode that inspired these reflections, it's there, waiting for you. With loveHenny x ★ Support this podcast ★

Clark and Matt decided to share a special episode from our sister cast, YOU OUGHTA KNOW: THE MOTIVATION SERIES. In this special episode, Matt is joined by the co-developer of Self-Determination Theory (SDT), Richard M. Ryan, to talk about all things motivation. Think of it as a primer on SDT. We hit the basics… What is motivation? What is SDT?‎ ‎What are the origins of SDT?‎ ‎The different types of motivation.‎ ‎Rewards and their impact on one's motivation.‎ ‎Of course, the famous three basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness).‎ ‎We discuss strategies one may take to either create environments to meet others' needs or to do it for oneself.‎ ‎What is well-being? How is well-being related to motivation?‎ ‎Is SDT universal? Is it culturally descriptive in all cases?‎ ‎And more! During our discussion on mindfulness, Rich refers to a recently published meta-analysis.  The reference is: Donald, James N., Helena Nguyen, James H. Conigrave, Anya Johnson, Inmaculada Adarves-Yorno, Ryan Cheng, Anya Bedi, Kevin B. Lowe, Jessica L. Lyons, Emma K. Devine, Georg B. Tamm and Richard M. British Journal of Management, 11111. https://doi.org/10.1111/1467-8551.70009  Matt refers to a 1999 meta-analysis on the impact of rewards. That reference is: Deci, E. L., Koestner, R., & Ryan, R. M. (1999). A meta-analytic review of experiments examining the effects of extrinsic rewards on intrinsic motivation. Psychological Bulletin, 125(6), 627–668. https://doi.org/10.1037/0033-2909.125.6.627 Three references about the cultural generalizability of SDT are: Chirkov, V., Ryan, R. M., Kim, Y., & Kaplan, U. Do you ever find yourself looking forward to your next holiday… even when the last one just ended? Or counting down to lunch before your day has even begun? In this opening episode of Season 18, I explore our very human tendency to live ahead of ourselves — and how we can gently guide ourselves back to presence.I reflect on conversations with my son, moments of yearning, memories from years gone by — and the beautiful, sometimes difficult practice of being with what is. I share thoughts on how cultural conditioning, unconscious habits, and even well-meaning manifestation messages can pull us out of the now… and what helps us come back. There's a lot of heart in this one, including:what we miss when we live for the “there”quotes from Thich Nhat Hanh and Ram Dass that always bring me homeand why presence doesn't mean avoiding changeI also share a little about A Piece of Quiet — and why it's becoming one of the things I most love to create. You'll hear the wind get up as I talk about coming into Winter - and the beaded curtain that covers the open door of the stable begins to clatter slightly. Shirin Oreizy, engineer and coach, found herself hindered by a pattern of perfectionism as she embarked on a career transition. She'd known about the Hoffman Process for five years, but she didn't think she needed it. When she saw the effects of this pattern of perfectionism and how it was blocking her from creating her dream and vision, she knew it was time. Concurrently, over these five years, Shirin and her husband had been on a long, painful IVF journey. At the time of her Process, Shirin was beginning to recover from the trauma of this journey and the grief of loss from four miscarriages. She was in the process of accepting that she and her husband would never be parents. Namaki During her Process, everyone knew Shirin as Namaki, which was her childhood name. Since no one in her Process knew her given name, her classmates and teachers called her Namaki. As her week at the Process unfolded, Shirin found that rekindling her relationship with Namaki was the path back to her true self and self-love. As she tells Drew: "I think what I really love about Hoffman specifically was that there's this imprint. There's this somatic, felt, body-sense imprint of love in me. That it will never go away; and you know, the patterns come ... and I forget myself, but I have access to come back to this deep imprint of self-love." At the Process, Shirin worked with Namaki's moments when she felt deeply unsafe. Through this, Shirin was able to experience a "falling back into trust with my place in the world." She realized there's a larger arc to her life story than she had been holding onto through control. Content Warning: Before you begin, please know that this conversation contains descriptions of "reproductive trauma, loss, and grief." Please use your discretion. More about Shirin Oreizy: My journey began as an engineer at Nvidia, where I learned the art of solving complex problems. Later, I founded and led a behavior design agency, partnering with both scrappy startups and Fortune 500 giants for two decades. Along the way, I became fascinated by how people truly transform. How real change happens within both teams and individuals. Today, I focus on coaching and speaking because I know how pivotal life's transitions can be. My work draws on a lifelong passion for understanding what drives us as humans, shaped by years of hands-on experience with leaders, teams, and individuals. I weave together insights from a range of disciplines: Personality Profiling: Enneagram & Big Five (self-understanding and connection) Hoffman Process (healing old patterns, renewing a sense of “enough”) Neuroscience (building resilience and hope) Positive Psychology (cultivating optimism and curiosity) Behavioral Science (creating sustainable habits and agency) Conscious Leadership Group (leading with awareness and presence) Outside of coaching, I've shared my work on human behavior with audiences at TechCrunch Disrupt (Audience Choice Award), as a guest lecturer at NYU, Columbia, and Stanford, and as a keynote speaker at major industry events. I live in San Francisco with my husband—also a Hoffman grad—and our dog, Pickles, a Hoffman grad in spirit (he's mastered the art of welcoming love, especially when treats are involved). We love exploring stunning landscapes around the world that challenge us physically and mentally. Since Hoffman, we've launched a passion project, Life of Adventure and Change, where we're mapping out a decade of travel adventures to share with friends. Our goal is to build a community of conscious travelers who inspire each other to embrace new adventures and experiences. Learn more about Shirin at her personal website. Episode 3725: Mark Fisher shares the inspiring story of Brian Patrick Murphy, whose daily rituals transformed deep grief into a lifelong practice of joy and presence. Drawing on personal resilience, positive psychology, and timeless spiritual wisdom, Fisher illustrates how happiness is not accidental but a deliberate choice cultivated through gratitude, belief, and daily action. Read along with the original article(s) here: https://markfisherfitness.com/dedicated-pursuit-happiness/ Quotes to ponder: “By creating these rituals, Brian understood that happiness is not a byproduct of our environment, but a choice to pursue deep inner contentment.” “We must have the stubbornness to accept our gladness in the ruthless furnace of this world.” “Every part of me knew that it wasn't the greatest idea, but I reminded myself of the practice. So, I jumped in that ocean. I planted that flower.” Episode references: The Grapes of Wrath: https://www.amazon.com/Grapes-Wrath-John-Steinbeck/dp/0143039431 Learn more about your ad choices.
