Welcome to the Purple Patch Podcast! On this episode, IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon and Purple Patch Fitness Coach Max Gering discuss a case study on Gwen, a 43-year-old triathlete who has been dealing with recurring lower-body injuries. Gwen's training followed a fixed three-week high-load cycle, leading to frequent injuries. The intervention focused on a three-week cycle with intentional recovery, shifting from a swim-bike-run routine to a more varied approach. Swimming emphasized cardiovascular conditioning, cycling focused on strength endurance, and running prioritized tissue integrity. Gwen's performance improved significantly, achieving her best half-IRONMAN time without injuries. The key takeaways include the importance of out-of-the-box thinking and consistent, non-intensive training. In this insightful episode of Nomadic Diaries, host Doreen Cumberford sits down with Lucy Boland, a seasoned expat coach, marathon runner, and mother of two, to discuss the realities behind the polished exterior of expatriate life. Lucy discusses how success abroad doesn't always equal happiness. This is the paradox of the high-achieving expat. Key Topics & Highlights:Lucy's Expat Journey:Lucy recounts how a one-year stay in the US turned into a 20-year global adventure, finally repatriating to Poland with her family. She discusses the challenges and surprises of returning "home".Run for Mental Health:Lucy talks about her upcoming marathon in support of the charity CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), underlining the importance of mental health awareness among expats and high-achievers.The Hidden Struggles of Expats:Despite enviable lives showcased on social media, expats often face isolation, difficulty finding genuine connections, struggles with identity, sleep, work-life balance, and unspoken mental health challenges.Expectations and Vulnerability:High-achieving expats may feel pressure to manage everything themselves, leading to a reluctance to seek help and increased disconnection from loved ones both locally and back home.Building Authentic Connections:Lucy offers practical advice for intentionally and strategically building a support network as an expat—whether through hobbies, spontaneous connections, or structured meetups—and shares touching personal anecdotes.Confidence and Adaptation:The expat journey can shake one's confidence as cultural expectations shift. Lucy explains the need to recalibrate self-image and embrace a new way of being confident in unfamiliar settings.Types of Expats & Their Unique Challenges:Lucy identifies four expat archetypes—those preparing to move, first-timers in the honeymoon phase, repeat movers, and long-term nomads or repatriates. She encourages self-compassion and embracing the trade-offs of global living. The Importance of Community:Well-being and thriving abroad hinge on understanding and nurturing the right kind of social connections for individual needs, from deep friendships to activity-specific groups.Holistic Coaching Approach:Lucy describes her coaching framework, utilizing the "Wheel of Life" to address eight interconnected areas: career, family/friends, finances, hobbies/recreation, environment, personal development, health, and significant relationships.Memorable Quotes“Once an expat, always an expat.” - Lucyna Boland“Living abroad is a trade-off. You will never truly ‘fit in'—and that's okay.” – Lucyna Boland“Home is a decision; it is not a place.” Doreen Cumberford“We are holistic—one topic in our life touches all areas.” Doreen CumberfordConnect with Lucyna BolandWebsite: lucinaboland.comLinkedIn: Lucy Boland on LinkedInFacebook: Lucy Boland on FacebookWe are a small independent podcast! The GCLS conference has come and gone, but this was recorded before that, so Kris shares her plans for the con. We hear the tale (tail?) of a new kitty entering Kris's domain. Everybody give it up for Mangy Kitty! Wait, we're getting an update. The cat has a new name and it's… oh. Oh dear. Really? You'll have to listen to find out more. Kris and Tara also do a final debrief of their (very strong) feelings about the ending of The Ultimatum: Queer Love. Official Recommendations From Kris: Woman on Fire (2016) Kris's official recommendation this week is the 2016 documentary Woman on Fire, which tells the story of New York City's first transgender firefighter. Kris says it's very informative about the trans experience and strongly recommends it as a starting point to educate yourself if you're looking for more information. From Tara: Date Everything! (Sassy Chap Games) Tara's official recommendation this week is Date Everything! It's a dating sim game where, after being let go from your customer service job, you receive a mysterious gift of glasses that allow you to date everything in your home. Everything becomes a person. The bed, the ceiling, the toilet, the blender, and 96 other things. Everything is there for you to date, befriend, or hate. Tara loved this game, playing it like it was her job and ended up laughing until she cried. Works/People Discussed Destination X (NBC) Building the Band (Netflix) Jeopardy! In 2000, Luna Halo was fronted by former Reality Check front man Nathan Barlowe and released their debut CD Shimmer on Christian music label Sparrow Records. Even though Shimmer was praised by critics, Luna Halo left Sparrow Records and the Christian music industry before recording their next album due to creative differences.Barlowe replaced guitarist MacIntosh with his younger brother Cary Barlowe, Aaron Jenkins replaced bassist Brad Minor, and drummer Chris Coleman replaced Jonathan Smith, completing the lineup for the new Luna Halo.Rumors of an imminent major label deal began to surface in 2004, and a deal with DreamWorks,[2] was announced prematurely, but later proved to be untrue, after negotiations broke down. The band released another EP, Wasting Away (originally recorded as a demo for DreamWorks) and opened shows for artists Velvet Revolver, Hoobastank, Collective Soul, Ours, Needtobreathe and Family Force 5.In 2005, Luna Halo were signed to American Recordings and began work on their second album, Luna Halo. Originally scheduled for a Summer 2006 release, the album was plagued with delays. This was due to American Recordings owner Rick Rubin's departure from Warner Bros to Columbia Records. The album was finally released in late 2007.On November 13, 2012, lead singer Nathan Barlowe announced that Luna Halo would be playing their final show on December 8, 2012, at 12th and Porter in Nashville, TN. This show would mark not only the band's final show, but also their twelve-year anniversary celebration.Their song 'I'm Alright' from their 2007 album was also featured inside Flatout: Ultimate Carnage as a part of the soundtrack. After a seven-year hiatus, on February 11, 2022 Luna Halo performed a sold out show at the Mercury lounge in Nashville, Tennessee. They announced during their show that they only had two days to prepare for this concert.Luna Halo signed a multi-album deal with Spirit Music Nashville/Fluid Music Revolution in June 2024 and is currently working on new material to be released in the Fall of 2024.https://www.instagram.com/lunahalomusic/"Still on the Run" - https://www.fbrmusic.com/Host - Trey MitchellIG - treymitchellphotography IG - feeding_the_senses_unsensoredFB - facebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848Threads - www.threads.net/@treymitchellphotographySponsorship Information/Guest Suggestions - ftsunashville@gmail.com

Ever tried to juggle visionary ideas, tight budgets, and a team that spans every learning style under the sun? In this episode of The Small Nonprofit, Maria sits down with management coach and EDI powerhouse Marisa Tran (they/them) to unpack what “people-first, consent-based leadership” really looks like when you're running a small shop. Marisa is an autistic, gender-queer, Irish-Vietnamese settler with 15 years of experience helping organizations clean up their HR, embed equity, and grow managers into actual leaders. Their superpowers: workplace harm reduction, accessibility audits, and coaching folks who were promoted for being great at their job...but never shown how to lead. Managing People – The Highlights Performance talks should be boringly routine Make goals and feedback part of every weekly or bi-weekly check-in so “the big scary review” never sneaks up on anyone. Consent in management LONG before performance reviews, work with the staffer to create a work plan and a check in cadence. Autonomy = trust. Recognition isn't one-size-fits-all Annual raises matter, but some staff love public shout-outs while others want quiet affirmation or extra learning budgets. Ask, don't assume. Leaders own the misses; teams own the wins When targets slip, step up and shield your crew. When they soar, hand them the mic and the credit. Diversity of thought strengthens strategy Pair big-idea generators with detail-oriented implementers and professional problem-spotters. Different brains, stronger outcomes. 3 Actionable Tips for Managing People: Bake goals into your meeting agenda Create a living doc or dashboard you revisit every check-in. Progress, blockers, next steps; nothing fancy, just visible. Run a “How do you like to be celebrated?” survey Five quick questions (think love-languages-at-work) will save you from that pizza-party flop and show staff you actually listen. Track turnover like a KPI Note tenure, role, and identities (where shared). Spikes in departures—especially among marginalized staff—are flashing red lights for culture repair. Coach, I'm getting ready for my full distance IRONMAN this Fall. What do you think about me doing a full marathon as a build up to the IRONMAN? That's awesome—you're gearing up for one of the most demanding endurance events out there! Preparing for a full-distance IRONMAN (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, 26.2-mile run) requires a smart balance of volume, intensity, and recovery. Your question about whether a full marathon is necessary or ideal is a great one, and it really depends on your goals and current training status. Is a Full Marathon Necessary for IRONMAN Prep? While many athletes include a marathon in their build-up, it's not always the most effective or safest choice. Here's why: Pros of Running a Marathon Before IRONMAN: - Mental confidence boost from completing the distance. - Opportunity to test nutrition, pacing, and gear. - Simulates the fatigue and mental grind of the IRONMAN run. Cons: - High injury risk due to the pounding and recovery time required. - Doesn't replicate IRONMAN fatigue (you'll be running after 6–8 hours of swimming and biking). - Can disrupt your training cycle due to the taper and recovery needed. Viable Alternatives to a Marathon Here are some smart substitutes that can build endurance and race readiness without the downsides of a standalone marathon: 1. **Century Ride (100-mile bike)** - **Pros**: Low-impact, builds aerobic base, simulates IRONMAN bike leg. - **Use it for**: Nutrition testing, pacing, and mental endurance. - **Pair it with**: A short brick run (e.g., 6–10 miles) to simulate race fatigue. 2. **Long Swim Events (e.g., 5K–10K open water)** - **Pros**: Builds swim confidence, improves pacing and sighting. - **Use it for**: Practicing open water skills and wetsuit comfort. - **Pair it with**: A bike ride or short run for a swim-bike brick. 3. **Race Simulation Bricks** - **Example**: 80-mile bike + 13-mile run. - **Pros**: Mimics IRONMAN fatigue better than a standalone marathon. - **Use it for**: Testing gear, nutrition, and pacing under fatigue. 4. **Back-to-Back Long Runs** - **Example**: 12 miles Saturday + 10 miles Sunday. - **Pros**: Builds run durability with less injury risk than a marathon. - **Use it for**: Building cumulative fatigue without a single long effort. Coach's Summary Recommendation Unless you're chasing a marathon PR or need the mental boost, **skip the standalone marathon**. Instead, focus on **race-specific brick workouts**, **long rides**, and **progressive long runs**. These will better prepare you for the unique demands of IRONMAN day. Get Gritty Tip: Follow Your Dreams! Welcome to this very special Get Gritty Tip, where we're celebrating a huge milestone—500 episodes! Listeners, did you know that most podcasts don't make it past their third episode? While some podcasts have hundreds or even thousands of episodes, a large number of podcasts are abandoned early. Visualize finish chute! Hydrate during recovery between brick sets. Balance of time in Zone 2. Fun Segment: IRONMAN or IRONmad? Alright, we covered a great question in our Ask A Coach segment—should you run a full marathon during your IRONMAN build? That got me thinking about all the wild decisions athletes make leading up to race day. So welcome to a new segment I'm calling Ironman or Ironmad? Here's how it works: I'll throw out some scenarios—real ones we've seen or heard—and we'll give our take. Are they solid strategies… or are we veering into madness? Scenario 1: “You decide to do a heat adaptation block for your IRONMAN—by sitting in a dry sauna in a full bike kit every day for a week.” Scenario 2: “You ride your longest bike session—112 miles—indoors on the trainer because you want to control nutrition, effort, and minimize interruptions.” Scenario 3: “You sign up for a local sprint tri just to ‘shake off the rust'… but end up racing it full throttle two weeks out from your IRONMAN.” Scenario 4: “You tape motivational quotes inside your helmet, on your bike stem, and under your water bottle to read mid-race.” Scenario 5: “You fly to your race 48 hours before the gun goes off, figuring you'll ‘sleep on the plane' and save money on hotel nights.” Bonus Scenario! Scenario 6: “You wear your brand-new race kit, race shoes, and nutrition mix for the very first time… on race day.” Race day success isn't about doing more—it's about doing what matters. So when you're making decisions in your IRONMAN prep, ask yourself: Is this building toward the race… or just feeding my ego? And if you've got a questionable training story or race-week decision you want to share, send it our way. We might feature it in the next Ironman or Ironmad? Closing: Thanks again for listening this week. Please be sure to follow us @303Triathlon and @grit2greatnessendurance and of course go to iTunes and give us a rating and a comment. We'd really appreciate it! Stay tuned, train informed and enjoy the endurance journey!

Hello, dear listener. I hope you've been well since I last dropped in to see you. You've probably noticed that I've been quiet for a minute. In short, life has been life-ing, and I've been being human. Many years ago I told myself (and anyone else who'd listen, haha) a couple of things: first, that I'd give music to the world until the day I die. That's a promise I know I'll keep. Second, that I'd always stay true and authentic as it relates to my artistry and I would never release music just for the sake of having something "new" up at the moment. The quality of my content is much more important than the quantity of it. So...I've been quiet, concentrating on being and staying grounded and nourishing my soul through some interesting times we're in. As they say though, there's always sunshine after the rain. Let it shine...Let's talk about music. Even though it's been spell since you've seen new content released by me that doesn't mean that I haven't been over here endlessly finding the most beautiful new music to present to you. Speaking of new music, wow. We are in such good times for music right now. I believe that because of the "tough times" we're living through that humanity at large is needing comfort and joy. That is showing up with a return to rich and emotionally-driven melodic music. You'll find the best of that here on this new set. Each of my sets fall differently as it relates to the ebb and flow of the energy. Sometimes the set will peak late, sometimes earlier. It's my belief that this set kind of peaks in the middle of the set (and that's OK!). There IS a cohesiveness from beginning to end, so I'm not concerned about where the "peak" is. But about that peak...wow. I have a string of songs that are epic masterpieces. As I sit and type these words I'm listening to that set within this set and I am covered in chill bumps. I hope you'll feel these same "feels" as me. Pay close attention to the set once I get to "Start A Fire" by Above & Beyond. After that I go through Coastlines "Everything All At Once", Aname "Hopeful", WhoMadeWho "Bedside", Topic "I Adore You" and Anthony Keyrouz "Young And Beautiful" -- all powerful masterpieces.Above & Beyond dropped a new album today, July 18th. I present two of the singles from the album (Start A Fire and Quicksand) because of how good they are and also so I could talk about the album. Go listen to it. Run. It's a beautiful collection of heart-driven masterpieces. Start A Fire is probably my favorite single from the album. Featuring Richard Bedford on vocals, it starts chill and low in energy and steadily builds into a hands-to-heaven emotional anthem.Enough with my words. On to the music. As always, this set was conceived and mixed with every ounce of love that I've got to give. From my heart...to your ears. LOVE.Artist/Title/Remix01. Gheist/Searching Places/Original Mix02. Last summer, Grant Fisher made history by becoming the first American man to win Olympic bronze in both the 5000m and 10000m at the Paris Olympic Games. Last month, he dropped down in distance and ran an 11-second personal best at the Bowerman Mile at the Prefontaine Classic. Now, he's gearing up for the USATF Outdoor Championships, where he's hoping to land a spot on Team USA for this year's World Championships in Tokyo. In this episode, he talks about how his training is going, how he reflects on being an Olympian (never an under-dog again!), and what it was like being Faith Kipyegon's right-hand man during her Breaking 4 attempt. Today's guest is Will “Hoss” Ratelle — former All-Big Sky linebacker turned strength and conditioning coach, with experience at the University of North Dakota, the NFL, and the CFL. Known for his intense, results-driven training style, Hoss blends his pro football background with evidence-based methods to build size, speed, and resilience in athletes. He's also the creator of popular programs like “Hoss Concurrent” and a respected voice in the online performance space. Most fitness and training education tends to be rigid, centered around fixed sets, reps, heart rate zones, and prescribed loads and timing. While this structure has value, athletes eventually need to move beyond it and enter a more adaptive, natural rhythm of training. Sets and reps can serve as a starting point, but great coaching gives training a feel, one that fosters ownership, problem-solving, and deeper athlete engagement. On today's episode, Will Ratelle shares practical strategies for building training protocols that allow for flexibility and athlete autonomy. He discusses how to keep athletes dialed in during strength and power work, while also diving into topics like hamstring rehab, velocity-based training, and more. Will adapts by simplifying programming indoors and accepting seasonal fluctuations in volume and intensity. What to try: Plan for seasonal ebbs and flows, especially in outdoor-heavy programs. Shift to more controlled indoor environments during harsh weather periods. Keep aerobic and speed elements alive through creative indoor alternatives like tempo sleds or circuits. The Role of Giant Sets in Strength Training – [9:35] Will uses giant sets to create training flexibility. These allow athletes to autoregulate volume, manage energy, and work at their own pace without strict rep schemes. What to try: Build sessions around circuits of 3–4 movements: main lift, jump, core, mobility. Set time limits (e.g., 20 minutes) instead of strict sets/reps. Let athletes self-select volume based on daily readiness. Building Competition and Problem-Solving into Small Group Training – [15:11] Will's small group setups naturally encourage problem-solving, teamwork, and friendly competition—all without over-coaching. What to try: Create circuits or mini-competitions that require collaboration. Encourage athletes to solve challenges together (e.g., team med ball throws for max reps). Keep coaching cues minimal—let athletes figure things out. Time-Based Plyometrics for Better Autoregulation – [18:05] Will prefers time-based plyo sets to help athletes naturally regulate their own volume and quality of output as they warm up and fatigue. What to try: Run 30-60 second blocks for depth jumps or hops instead of fixed reps. Encourage gradual build-up in intensity within each b...
