What actually makes a mix feel musical before you ever touch an EQ? Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Eric Sarafin, better known as Mixerman - a gold- and platinum-selling producer, mixer, and engineer with credits ranging from The Pharcyde and Tone-Lōc to Ben Harper, Lifehouse, Barenaked Ladies, Foreigner, and Pete Murray. He's also the author of Zen and the Art of Mixing, Zen and the Art of Producing, Zen and the Art of Recording, and his newest book, Mixerman's Ultimate Guide to Producing Records, Music & Songs.   In this episode, Eric and I get straight into what really makes mixes work - not plugins, presets, or loudness targets, but arrangement, balance, and the way instruments naturally interact. We talk about masking as something musical rather than something to eliminate, why most of the "music" lives in the midrange, and how perceived loudness comes from balance, not hype at the top or bottom.   We also dig into how listening quietly can reveal problems faster, why speed and familiarity with your tools matter more than features, and how motion and distortion bring life to otherwise static tracks. Eric shares his perspective on working fast, stepping away to regain objectivity, and making decisions that serve the song instead of the tech.   Along the way, we cover practical mic strategies for home studios, why placement matters more than price, and how knowing why you're choosing a tool is more important than following trends. This one is about thinking musically first - and letting the mix follow.     THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS! http://UltimateMixingMasterclass.com https://usa.sae.edu/ https://www.izotope.com Use code ROCK10 to get 10% off! https://www.native-instruments.com Use code ROCK10 to get 10% off! https://www.adam-audio.com/ https://www.spectra1964.com https://gracedesign.com/ https://pickrmusic.com  https://RecordingStudioRockstars.com/Academy https://www.thetoyboxstudio.com/ Listen to the podcast theme song "Skadoosh!" https://solo.to/lijshawmusic Listen to this guest's discography on Muso: https://credits.muso.ai/profile/925b8031-48bb-40d5-af32-c289cd7663a7   If you love the podcast, then please leave a review: https://RSRockstars.com/Review   CLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES AT: https://RSRoockstars.com/544

In a world of shifting policies and "Wild West" internet searches, how do you find the truth? This episode dives into the recent major changes in the caregiver support world, including the transition of AlzAuthors under the leadership of All Home Care Matters. We move past the industry headlines to focus on the human element: why community is the only thing that keeps a caregiver sane when the ground is shifting. Inside the Conversation: Vetting the Noise: Why "human-filtered" information is the best defense against the costly misinformation and false promises targeting caregivers today. The Power of Storytelling: How memoirs and fiction provide the "me too" moments and emotional escape that medical manuals simply cannot offer. The "First 48" Strategy: Lance shares his personal journey of being "new to the wheel" and why professional healthcare often misses the human needs of the family. Bridging the Gap for 2026: As the "Silver Tsunami" peaks, we discuss how veterans can support the massive new wave of caregivers entering the trenches this year. Our Guest: Lance A. Slatton Lance A. In this episode, I'm talking directly to parents who feel like their dream life has been put on pause. If you've ever thought “I don't have the time, energy, or headspace to manifest anymore”, this one's for you. I share why becoming a parent doesn't block your ability to manifest, it changes it, and how trying to force old routines into a new season of life can create more frustration than flow.We explore how manifestation can work in real parent life without perfect routines, long rituals, or extra pressure. From nervous system regulation and tiny daily moments, to identity shifts and tools that work in the background, this episode is about releasing guilt, honouring capacity, and trusting that you're still building your dream life, just in a more grounded, embodied way. If you're a parent trying to grow, evolve, and want more while carrying a lot, I see you.www.cannycrystalsacademy.co.uk/love - JOIN THE MAGNETIC SELF-LOVE 14-DAY CHALLENGEwww.mani-fest.uk

If money feels harder than it “should” right now, this episode is your reset: you don't have a marketing problem, you have an offer clarity problem. In this conversation, I'm breaking down the foundational truth that changes everything in your coaching or service-based business: you can't sell what you can't name. And I know that sounds basic. But I'm telling you, after talking to business owners every single day, this is the pattern I see over and over again: people think they need better messaging, more leads, a stronger launch, or “visibility.”Meanwhile they can't clearly answer one question:What are you selling?I also share how my background teaching yoga shaped the way I understand offers: one class doesn't change your life, but a practice does. And your business needs to be positioned the same way.If you've been feeling stuck, fuzzy, or like your business should be working better than it is, listen to this episode. It will help you stop spinning and start selling what you're actually here to do.Because your next level isn't hiding in another funnel. It's hiding in the question you've been avoiding. In This Episode, I Talk About:Why revenue doesn't feel “easy” when you're unclear on what you're actually selling The difference between selling a modality vs. selling a transformationHow most coaches and business owners are misdiagnosing their “problem”Why people won't invest time, energy, or money if they can't picture the outcome they're buyingWhy specificity isn't a “niche trap” What “profitable” actually means in terms of business modelsHow values-driven businesses can lead right now, creating spaces of love, safety, and belonging when people need it most.If you've ever found yourself asking “why does making money feel so hard right now?”, pop your earbuds in and give this one a listen. And if you want help getting clear on it, come join me inside the Profitable Coaching Business Bootcamp (week of February 9). They're extremely helpful when it comes to reaching our audience, and I read each and every one!Key Quotes & Takeaways:"Most of the members of the Academy tell me that a lot of the things that have helped their business, they picked up from just looking at what we're doing, what has worked for them as a member of our Academy.""But that now means that we can look at what's next because there's always a portion of your audience who need more, want more, and are willing to invest in something that will get them either more access, something that will deliver a higher level of results, something that will get the more support and all of that sort of stuff.""So your membership is highly unlikely to cover absolutely every inch of grass on the field within your market. And so having a real top down understanding of where you fit, what isn't covered, what opportunities there are for you to diversify your offering or to just rule out, you know, I never want to work with this demographic, not because I don't like them, not because they're too basic or too advanced, just I don't feel this is a part of my market I want to serve.""If you've been thinking about a price increase for your membership, just do what we're doing. Make sure you're utilizing that legacy pricing because not only does it work as a marketing strategy, it's also the fairest thing to do for your existing members."

I hate that I even have to write this. But fake recruiters and fake job postings are everywhere right now. And job seekers are being targeted hard. That's not because you're careless. It's because scammers go after people who are motivated, hopeful, and actively searching. That's you. What makes this worse is how convincing these scams have become. In fact, a couple months ago, one of my clients showed me a recruiter message that fooled me! The company looked real. The LinkedIn profile looked legit. The email sounded professional. It wasn't. That's why this week's lesson is about how to protect yourself. Not with fear. With awareness. In today's video, I walk you through 10 clear warning signs that help you quickly answer one critical question: Is this real…or is it just a scam? You'll learn: What to check first when a recruiter emails or messages you. How fake job postings give themselves away. Why Gmail addresses, rushed language, and vague roles should always make you pause. What legitimate recruiters never ask you for. How to verify a job or recruiter in minutes, not hours. This isn't about becoming paranoid. It's about becoming informed. If you're job searching right now, please don't skip this one. Even smart, experienced professionals are getting caught off guard. And if this helps you, pass it along to someone else who's searching. A simple heads up can save them a lot of stress. Listen to STOP Falling for Fake Jobs and Recruiter Scams now! However, she always thought about either going back into aviation or pursuing her dream of being in the film business inspired in part by her brother, Ashley Boone, a pioneering film executive. Learn more about Ashley here: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/he-was-star-wars-secret-weapon-why-was-he-forgotten-1275211/Through him, she attended an advanced screening of Star Wars before its release in May 1977. That moment proved transformational and solidified her belief that the motion picture industry was where she belonged. So, she packed her bags and moved to Hollywood. Over the decades that followed, Cheryl worked on the marketing, publicity, and release of some of the most iconic films in cinema history. Her credits include Forrest Gump, Titanic, The King's Speech, Braveheart, The Artist, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Right Stuff, Once Upon a Time in America, The Wedding Singer, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, and Spider-Man 2. She also worked on two Indiana Jones films and five Star Trek films.Behind the scenes, Cheryl broke significant barriers. She became the first African American woman to lead a major studio marketing department at New Line Cinema, and later the first African American to serve as President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, where she guided the organization through a pivotal period of reflection and change.Today, she continues shaping the future of storytelling as the Founding Director and Professor of Practice at the Sidney Poitier New American Film School at Arizona State University (film.asu.edu). In that role, she mentors students and builds a program grounded in Sidney Poitier's legacy, emphasizing inclusion, leadership, and real-world industry experience. From the skies of Pan Am to Hollywood studios and now the classroom, Cheryl Boone Isaacs' career reflects a lifelong commitment to storytelling, leadership, and opening doors for future generations. Support the show Visit Us for more Pan Am History! What actually happens when you stop isolating everything and just let a band play together in the room? Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Travis Harrison, founder of Serious Business Music, a Brooklyn-based studio known for capturing raw, honest performances from real bands. Travis joined me to talk about how his studio and workflow evolved over time - from early audio-only recordings to embracing video, hybrid setups, and modern tools - while still staying rooted in classic recording approaches. We talked about recording bands live in the room, why Travis embraces bleed instead of fighting it, and how capturing the energy of a performance often matters more than perfect isolation. He shared how he'll use simple setups like a single M 160 ribbon mic on drums, how preparation and adaptability become critical when recording larger bands, and why letting musicians interact naturally can shape the sound of a record in ways plugins never will. Travis also broke down his hybrid workflow, using tape as a tone-shaping tool rather than a rigid format - running tracks through a tape machine for color before moving into Pro Tools for editing and mixing. We discussed mic choices like using an SM57 on bass cabinets for midrange growl, routing and flexibility with a Soundcraft Ghost console, and how his Brooklyn studio has been shaped by real-world challenges like soundproofing, space limitations, and evolving technology. Throughout the conversation, we kept coming back to the balance between tradition and innovation - and why great records still come down to musicians, rooms, and decisions made in the moment.   THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS! http://UltimateMixingMasterclass.com https://usa.sae.edu/ https://www.izotope.com Use code ROCK10 to get 10% off! https://www.native-instruments.com Use code ROCK10 to get 10% off! https://www.adam-audio.com/ https://www.spectra1964.com https://gracedesign.com/ https://pickrmusic.com  https://RecordingStudioRockstars.com/Academy https://www.thetoyboxstudio.com/ Listen to the podcast theme song "Skadoosh!" https://solo.to/lijshawmusic Listen to this guest's discography on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0RdFM4aImmogaEJBwV5pla?si=8b285a72dca7478a   If you love the podcast, then please leave a review: https://RSRockstars.com/Review   CLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES AT: https://RSRoockstars.com/543

What if the “alpha” you've been chasing was never something you had to become… but something you had to remember? In this interview-season episode of the Alpha Male Coach Podcast, I sit down with a brother who's close to my heart: Salu “Lu” Smith - a fellow Projector, a long-time student in the Academy, a graduate of Tribe Class 002, and a mentor who returned to support Tribe Class 003. This is not a surface-level conversation about tactics, dominance, or performance. This is an initiation story. A seven-year transformation. A real example of what happens when a man stops outsourcing his power and starts listening to the voice inside him that already knows the truth.Lou takes us back to the beginning: 2018 in California, a relationship that exposed the “nice guy” conditioning, and the pressure he felt to become harder, stronger, more masculine - not from alignment, but from insecurity. Like a lot of men, he got pulled into the mainstream “alpha male” content and the idea that being an alpha was about getting women, gaining status, and proving something. But underneath that drive was something deeper: a craving to finally feel enough. That search eventually brought him to this podcast and to the Model of Alignment - the simple but life-changing understanding that your circumstances don't create your results… your thoughts do. Lou shares how he would come in and out of coaching at first, trying to “figure it out” on his own, until life humbled him into a deeper commitment. And that commitment became the turning point: not because the answers were outside of him, but because having a coach helped him see what he couldn't yet see in himself. We go deep on what it really means to invest in your inner world - especially when money fear, doubt, and ego resistance rise up. Lou explains how the leap always feels risky in the moment, but once the decision is made, reality starts rearranging around it. The money figures itself out. The mind quiets down. The path opens. From there, we talk about Tribe - not just as coach training, but as a high-accountability brotherhood container where men hold space for each other to grow, awaken, and lead. Lou shares what it was like to experience Tribe first as a student in Class 002, then to return as a mentor in Class 003. Watching other men rise didn't just inspire him - it expanded him. It sharpened his understanding. It brought new layers of wisdom online. And then we go to the hardest question of all: How do you explain “the lights being on” to someone who's never had the lights on before? How do you describe awakening to a man still living inside the program?Lou's answer is simple and profound: you don't convince the mind. You invite the feeling. You listen for resonance. You trust the signal. And you take the leap - even when it scares you - because that fear is often the ego trying to keep the old identity alive. If you've been feeling that pull inside you… this episode is for you.Elevate Your Alpha.

Continuing Below the Line's 2026 Oscar series, the conversation turns to Visual Effects — a category that sits at the intersection of technology, craft, and storytelling. This week on Below the Line, Skid is joined by Kent Seki and Chris Batty for a focused conversation about the Oscar nominees for Achievement in Visual Effects. Together, they look at how the category has evolved — and what separates technical accomplishment from storytelling impact. As with the rest of this year's Oscar series, this episode is available both as an audio podcast and as a full video conversation on YouTube, offering listeners and viewers a closer look at how visual-effects work is discussed, debated, and evaluated from inside the process. Our discussion ranges across: The different creative demands of large-scale spectacle versus realism-driven effects How films like Avatar: Fire and Ash and Jurassic World Rebirth approach scale and world-building, compared to the grounded physical environments of F1 and The Lost Bus The challenge of integrating effects into performances, locations, and production design without overwhelming the story Why elements like fire, debris, and destruction require as much restraint as technical precision How visual effects intersect with cinematography, editorial, and sound to maintain continuity and tone The increasing expectation that effects choices support narrative clarity rather than novelty What this year's nominees suggest about how the Academy continues to define excellence in the field Rather than focusing on predictions, the conversation looks at how visual effects decisions are made — and how those choices shape tone, performance, and story across very different kinds of films.

Send us a textAs if the fourth in a horror film series, this week TGTPTU goes to space! In Season 16, Ep 4 of Gray Matter (working title), Ken, Thomas, and Ryan discuss writer-director James Gray's AD ASTRA (2019) as their unpatented pincer movement continues along the auteur's eight-movie filmography.   Cowritten with a television writer of meager IMDB credits, Gray's highest budget film to date sends astronaut and resting heart rate champion Roy Richard McBride (Brad Pitt) to the furthest reaches of the explored solar system in order to present him jump scares and (un)excusable homicides on his journey in a near future to retrieve his father played by Tommy Lee Jones who apparently can't get enough being in outer space (see Season 2, Ep 8 for our Space Cowboys coverage). Because this is a Gray joint, you know daddy and son are gonna have some emotional reckoning. What you might not be expecting are a moon car chase, falling from near orbit to Earth, or kickflipping a shuttle's flotsam while grinding a wicked rail of an asteroid belt (at least one of these happens, no further spoilers).   Like last week's ep, Gray did not have final cut (i.e., the film rights; he might have had the professional, high-performance video editing software designed by Apple for macOS and iPadOS, although there is a strong possibility he had neither), which allowed for surprise research revelations by Ken, Tom, and Ryan and a wish for a hard media release of the Director's Cut audio track.   Chris Nolan's late-career cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema (listen back to Season 12 for more on the lenser so nice they named him twice) shoots this beautiful film. Ad Astra garnered Gray's first and to date only Academy nomination for Best Sound Mixing, which host Ken is in real time appalled by what films received Academy noms for Best Special Effects to the exclusion of this film's many practical VFX. Also, Ken struggles to name Robert McKee to really land a movie reference despite covering Adaptation in both the pod's Nicolas Cage (Season 3) and Meryl Streep (Season 8) coverage; Ryan has galaxy brain generational conflict ideas about the movie's themes; and Tom tries placing the flick among the good space movies of the past decade.   Factoid: The film was released in France under the tile “Ad Astra,” which means “to the stars” in Latin and in Finland as “Ad Astra,” which also means “to the stars” in Latin. THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @goodpodugly.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gLetterboxd (follow us!):Podcast: goodpoduglyKen: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

On today's show, Richard and Alison hop on a boxcar and stare wistfully as the 20th century passes them by with Best Picture nominee Train Dreams. They discuss director Clint Bentley's lush, if somewhat sanded-down take on Denis Johnson's novella about a lumberman haunted by his past, starring a very quiet Joel Edgerton. Train Dreams is one of Netflix's Best Picture nominees this year, but the film was not an original production. It was acquired by the streamer at last year's Sundance Film Festival. On the occasion of this year's festival (which is happening as we speak) we also discuss how Sundance works, and what, exactly gives a movie that ineffable Sundance flavor we have come to associate with small-scale American indies like Little Miss Sunshine.  We also discuss Netflix's seemingly endless quest to win Best Picture, why the Academy is so resistant to giving them the big prize, and why the most popular streamer in the world is so desperate for Academy validation in the first place.
