Trump's Most Self-Defeating Move on Rare Minerals

Shift Key with Robinson Meyer and Jesse Jenkins

President Trump announced on Monday that the U.S. would create a domestic stockpile of critical minerals for civilian use — essentially a Strategic Petroleum Reserve, but for lithium, copper, rare earths, and other rocks central to electronics and decarbonization. It's one of many experimental and unusual steps that the administration has taken to boost U.S. mineral production over the past 13 months. But are any of those plans working? What could improve — and what does any of this mean for clean energy? On this week's Shift Key, we talk to someone who saw these policies up close. From 2023 to 2025, Nathaniel Horadam worked on electric vehicle and mineral policy at the Department of Energy's Loan Programs Office, eventually overseeing the office's critical mineral portfolio last year. The office is the department's in-house bank (it's since been rechristened the Energy Dominance Financing Office) and it runs some of the federal government's most ambitious industrial policy.Horadam is now founder and president of Full Tilt Strategies, LLC, and he writes about mineral issues for his Tailings substack. He joins us to discuss what's working, what's not working, and what needs to improve. Shift Key is hosted by Robinson Meyer, the founding executive editor of Heatmap, and Jesse Jenkins, a professor of energy systems engineering at Princeton University. Moving Away From ComplexityLeaders Make It Better "Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that does bear fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit." – John 15:2 (ESV) What is the purpose of pruning… that less… produces more As organizations, ministries, leaders grow, so does complexity. However, complexity is not a necessity. Great leaders make things better—not by adding more, but by doing less, better. As I write this, SpaceX launched its first rocket of the year early this morning. Last year set a record for the number of launches, and this year is already on track to surpass it. SpaceX has pioneered lower-cost rockets that not only launch but return safely to Earth—a concept that was considered impossible just a few years ago. But a team of the best engineers on the planet, paired with a visionary leader willing to attempt the unthinkable, proved the doubters wrong. I recently saw Elon Musk post a picture showing the evolution of their Raptor rocket engines. These engines are ultimately designed to carry humanity to Mars. But to me, the true marvel lies in how each version has been refined. Raptor 1 looked like a tangled mess of wires, tubes, and complexity. It worked, but it was difficult to build, maintain, and reproduce. Raptor 2 was a major step forward—cleaner, more streamlined, and a genuine engineering breakthrough. Yet, the team didn't stop there. Raptor 3, the latest version, is elegant in its simplicity. It's powerful, efficient, and ruthlessly refined— the result of hundreds of intentional decisions to remove what didn't belong and simplify what remained. Elon Musk's team didn't arrive here by accident. They followed a radical but effective design philosophy. "Every requirement is dumb until proven otherwise. Delete it. Simplify. Optimize. Accelerate. Only then do you automate." This isn't just how you build rockets; it's a masterclass in leading toward simplicity. When I arrived at Grace eight years ago, we found over 50 separate ministries operating under the banner of the church. Most were siloed, competing with one another for resources and attention. We made the intentional decision to move from 50 things to four. It was a deliberate shift away from complexity. It's a timeless problem. As organizations grow, complexity inevitably creeps in. Often, it's not bad things, it's good things that no longer serve the mission. Sacred cows. Outdated processes. Organizational comfort zones. If we don't intentionally prune them, we'll never move with the power and speed the Spirit desires. Remember the words of Jesus: "Every branch that does bear fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit." – John 15:2 What Space X Can Teach Leaders 1. Question Everything "Every requirement is dumb until proven otherwise." As leaders, it's our responsibility to question every process, system, and program we engage with. We should consistently ask, "Does this serve the mission?"—until we can either validate it or eliminate it. Why do we hold this meeting? How many of these programs are truly necessary? Can one person do this instead of two? Can this leader handle more responsibility? Why does it take three classes and three months to move someone toward membership? How hard is it to onboard new leaders? Why are we using more than one communication platform? Just because something worked in a past move of God doesn't mean it belongs in the next. 2. Delete, Delete, Delete You can't simplify clutter. Before you simplify, you must eliminate. Craig Groeschel challenges his leaders to keep a "stop doing list" alongside their "to-do list." It's logical—you can't add something new until you remove something old. This year, we made the decision to eliminate our Midweek Fire service to make room for the mission. We asked: Why do we need two weekly services focused on awakening—especially when Sunday is already our strongest and most effective service for that purpose? By removing the Wednesday service, we created space and opportunity for more Grace Groups to meet on campus. That shift better aligns with our vision to train and send. What weekly or monthly meeting can be eliminated or consolidated? What process or system could lose a step or two? What volunteer or leader could be repositioned or reallocated? I promise, you can do more than you think, with less than you think you need. Eliminate what no longer helps people discover life in all its fullness. 3. Clarify What Remains Once something is stripped down to its essential parts, you must then clarify it. Every program, system, activity needs a clear and identifiable win. Every leader needs a clear and simple expectation. Clarity is essential for both mission and movement. What is the win for our Sunday service? What's the expectation for Next Steps? What's the goal of your weekly connection points? What's the purpose of your one-on-one meetings? "Write the vision; make it plain… so that he may run who reads it." (Habakkuk 2:2) Clarity empowers people to run with vision. 4. Accelerate Timeframes What is your big, bold goal for this year? What if you accelerated your timeframe? Instead of going for it slowly over the year, what if you hit it hard for 90 days? Chances are you will not make it… but what if you do? Or how much further will you be along the journey because you accelerated? When you move swiftly and quickly, it might be messy, but it could also be more missional! Remember, the Acts church moved fast because they trusted the Spirit and empowered people. So can we. 5. Automate Last I love automation. This is where systems and programs operate without your constant intervention. However The temptation is to automate first. However if you automate while there is still clutter you will only create confusion. This is why automation is the last step. Today there is a wealth of tools and resources that can steam-line processes, automate tasks and communications. Before you lock them in… make sure that the process has been perfected. Leaders Make It Better This is one of Grace World's 5 Core Leadership Behaviors: Leaders Make It Better. It means we leave things better than we found them. We don't settle for "this is how we've always done it." We treat "it is what it is" like a curse word. We question everything. We eliminate what's unnecessary. We clarify constantly. We move at the speed of the Spirit. And we multiply what matters. As leaders, we take initiative to clear obstacles. We don't wait for someone else to do it. Questions 1. What is one area in your ministry you can simplify this week to make it better? 2. What is a system, step, or sacred cow that needs to be challenged? 3. Where have you settled for the status quo instead of stewarding revival? "Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life… so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody." – 1 Thessalonians 4:11–12 Follow Up Questions What is on thing you will STOP doing in the next 30 days? What is one thing you need to SIMIPLIFY in your life immediately? What is one BIG BOLD goal you can SPEED up?

How Amplio scaled from founder-led sales to repeatable AE closings without founder involvement | Trey Closson

Category Visionaries

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 23, 2026 21:10

Amplio operates a two-sided marketplace that helps manufacturers monetize surplus inventory and decommissioned industrial equipment rather than writing off assets or paying for disposal. The company has won contracts with GM and SpaceX despite competing against liquidators with 30-year local relationships. In a recent episode of BUILDERS, we sat down with Trey Closson, Co-Founder and CEO of Amplio, to unpack how the company executed a complete business model pivot from supply chain risk software to marketplace, discovered that enterprise deals close faster than SMB despite conventional wisdom, and built repeatable GTM motions in a fragmented $100B+ market previously dominated by local operators. Topics Discussed: Executing Amplio's pivot from supply chain risk software to surplus inventory marketplace Moving four truckloads of inventory through a WeWork to prove the business model Closing GM and SpaceX inbound from Google Ads as the PMF validation signal Displacing 30-year incumbent relationships through corporate + local dual threading Why enterprise contracts closed faster than SMB deals in Amplio's specific context Scaling beyond founder-led sales to repeatable AE motions Operating a two-sided marketplace: supply acquisition strategy vs. demand conversion GTM Lessons For B2B Founders: Manual heroics prove economics before automation: When a customer offered Amplio $25 million in surplus inventory, Trey had no warehouse, no logistics infrastructure, and no playbook. What was supposed to be four pallets became four full truckloads delivered to their WeWork. Trey and one employee physically moved inventory boxes off pallets into their office space, then figured out how to sell it while the WeWork management threatened eviction. The core insight: "the first time solving a problem, it doesn't need to be an automated, efficient process, it just needs to be okay. A customer has a problem, we need to figure out a way to solve that problem." Only after proving they could profitably solve the problem multiple times did they invest in automation and efficiency. For founders, the implication is clear—delay infrastructure investment until you've manually proven unit economics and repeatability, even if execution requires unsustainable effort. True PMF signals come from zero-relationship wins: Trey leveraged 15 years of supply chain relationships to secure initial customers and build product infrastructure. But he identifies the precise PMF inflection point: "middle of last year, we had both GM and SpaceX respond to a Google Ad." These companies had zero connection to Trey or his co-founder, found Amplio through SEM, and chose them over traditional liquidators they'd worked with for years. This is the distinction between "my network will buy from me" and "the market will buy from us." Founders should use their Rolodex to achieve velocity and prove the concept, but recognize that true product-market fit only exists when customers with no founder relationship choose your solution over established alternatives. Enterprise velocity depends on payment direction and urgency profile: Amplio deliberately focused on enterprise after being told by multiple founders to avoid "hunting whales." They discovered enterprise closed faster than SMB for three structural reasons. First, SMBs had unrealistic recovery expectations—wanting $900K back on $1M inventory when market reality is cents on the dollar, creating unresolvable expectation gaps. Second, enterprises had the problem across 100+ facilities with no dedicated owner and urgent mandates from finance or supply chain leadership. Third, because Amplio pays customers rather than charging them, legal review velocity increased dramatically. As Trey explains: "the lawyers thankfully determine, because we're not getting paid by them, that there's low risk for them in terms of signing a contract with us." Founders should map their specific deal structure and customer urgency profile rather than defaulting to SMB-first based on generic advice. Displace entrenched relationships through dual-threading: The surplus liquidation market is hyper-fragmented with hundreds of thousands of local liquidators, many holding 30-year plant-level relationships. Amplio's breakthrough: "partnering together with that person at the corporate level we can indicate not only can we solve the problem locally, but we can also do it across the entire enterprise." They pair the local plant manager with corporate procurement or finance leadership, demonstrating local problem-solving plus enterprise-wide scalability that local liquidators cannot match. This dual-threading strategy neutralizes the incumbent's relationship advantage while showcasing the efficiency and consistency that corporate leadership values. For founders entering relationship-driven markets, identify the corporate stakeholder whose enterprise-wide objectives trump individual facility loyalty. Accelerate trust through predictable execution in low-NPS markets: Industrial liquidation is a "really low NPS industry—nobody loves working with their liquidator." In markets with poor customer satisfaction and commoditized offerings, trust accelerates when you focus on "say-do ratio"—if you commit to something, execute it. Amplio often solves adjacent problems outside their core offering and frequently removes inventory from warehouses faster than economically optimal to make customers "look like an absolute hero." This over-delivery in low-satisfaction markets creates disproportionate differentiation. The tactical implementation: understand what problems the organization is trying to solve beyond your core product, find ways to solve those problems even if not monetizable, and prioritize making your champion successful over optimizing every transaction. // Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe. www.GlobalTalent.co // Don't Miss: New Podcast Series — How I Hire Senior GTM leaders share the tactical hiring frameworks they use to build winning revenue teams. “These are life-safety lines, and failure is not an option,” says Jake Jacoby, CEO of TELCLOUD. “Our solution has to last 20 years, not five—and that's why partnering with Ericsson makes so much sense.” In the latest episode of the TELCLOUD POTS and Shots Podcast Series, Doug Green, Publisher of Technology Reseller News, is joined by Jacoby and special guest Ian Tearle of Ericsson to discuss how global partnerships are accelerating the replacement of legacy copper lines. Tearle, a Technical Alliances Partner Engineer at Ericsson, explains that his role centers on validating and stress-testing partner solutions to ensure they meet the rigorous certifications required for environments such as healthcare facilities, public safety agencies, elevators, and fire systems. “We're not just looking at whether something works,” Tearle says. “It has to be certified, resilient, and designed for real-world safety use. In many cases, what we deploy could literally save lives.” Jacoby outlines how TELCLOUD's POTS replacement platform depends on unbreakable cellular connectivity, making Ericsson's router technology and long-term wireless roadmap—spanning 5G and beyond—a critical foundation. Together, the companies are enabling partners to replace copper lines while maintaining compatibility with legacy life-safety equipment. The conversation also highlights how the partnership simplifies adoption for channel partners. By aligning and co-terminating licensing terms across TELCLOUD and Ericsson solutions, resellers can deploy future-proof POTS replacement without added operational complexity—making the opportunity accessible even for MSPs without deep telecom backgrounds. Looking ahead, both companies view the partnership as part of a broader modernization of global telecom infrastructure. As copper networks sunset worldwide, the need for reliable, certified communication paths remains—and wireless has evolved into a primary connectivity solution. The episode concludes with the Shots segment, where Jacoby introduces Dame Más Reserva Extra Añejo, a cognac-barrel-aged tequila designed to be sipped and savored—an appropriate close to a discussion focused on durability, precision, and long-term value. Pain or early Prevention logic. Totally consistent with their experience.• Experience beats explanationPeople trust what they feel more than what we tell them. Feeling good is persuasive. Lectures about prevention aren't.• Holidays lieDifferent stress. Lower demand. No deadlines. Physiology behaves. The wobble shows up when normal life returns.• Testing changes the frameProgress exams are a better story: function before symptoms. Data before opinion. It shifts the goal from “pain gone” to “everything working.”• Agree to experimentIf they want to push spacing out, make it a trial: tag-testing, clear checkpoints, shared decision-making. Collaboration instead of drift. The bigger idea:Reactivations and spacing aren't clinical problems, they're belief problems. If you understand the belief, you don't have to push, sell, or convince. Born out of the 2020 lockdowns, Alts.co has grown into a unique platform offering access to unconventional asset classes, including tequila barrels, sports ventures, and K-pop music rights. But how do you promote alternative investments like these without getting lost in the hype?A conversation with Stefan von Imhof, CEO of Alts.co.We covered:* How to deal with the fact that you can't be an expert in everything* The power of community and decentralized due diligence* The right risk-return profile for Alts offeringWatch it on YouTube or listen on all podcast apps.A few quotes from our conversationTrust vs Fun Trust is earned slowly but surely, and you can lose it like that if you're not careful. But that's why we're careful. And so, it feels good. It feels really good to bring great deals to the community. And yeah, if we have stories to tell on top of it, fantastic.I've asked Stefan a few questions about what I call “investing beyond returns”, because investing is not multi-dimensional; topics for dinner conversation, status, learning, etc., all matter. But it turns out that the answer is more boring than I was hoping. Returns matter more than anything else, and trust is built on returns. That Tequila TripWe've been to Mexico twice now. We've been working with our tequila dealer, and yes, he's as cool as he sounds, but we've been working with Miguel for about a year before this. And then as we matured as a company and realized tequila really is a great investment. It has all the same appreciation as wine and whiskey, without the wait. Tequila goes from Blanco to Reposado, to Anejo, to extra Anejo in three and a half years, and you're out. I was a bit obsessed about something that sounded too much fun to be a sound investment: a tequila tasting and investing trip to Mexico. It turns out that meeting people, visiting locations, are just a normal part of a thorough due diligence, a topic that kept coming back in the conversation. The Right Risk-Profile It's tough to get our community excited for anything under like 12%, roughly. I would say the sweet spot is like 13 to 18%. The area above 20%, people just start   getting skeptical.  It sounds like b******t.And then it's got to have downside protection.Stefan also added that they don't offer startup investments and avoid Equity risk for the same reason. This brought me back to the issue I expressed with YieldStreet Willow Wealth: the most toxic offering for retail investors is a high headline yield, combined with a high level of risk (such as equity tranches) hidden in the footnotes. AI is everywhere—and yet, in most organizations, it's nowhere. People are intrigued, but unsure. Leaders evangelize, but workflows stay the same. Curiosity, it turns out, is not a strategy. In this episode, we're joined by Justin Angsuwat, Chief People Officer at Culture Amp, to unpack how they flipped the script. In just six weeks, they moved nearly 80% of their workforce from passively curious to actively confident in using AI—without top-down mandates or perfectionist paralysis. We get into the nuts and bolts of the “Accelerate” program, the value of separating exploration from expectation, and why confidence—not usage metrics—is the better north star for early-stage AI adoption. Justin also shares the uncomfortable truths about integrating AI into daily work, especially for senior employees whose identities are tied to outdated workflows. If your team is hovering in AI limbo, this conversation is your blueprint for action.Related Links:Join the People Managing People CommunitySubscribe to the newsletter to get our latest articles and podcastsCheck out this episode's sponsor: DeelConnect with Justin on LinkedInCheck out Culture AmpSupport the show

In this episode of Business Coaching Secrets, Karl Bryan and Rode Dog dive deep into the strategies and mindset shifts that elevate coaching businesses to elite status. The hosts explore the concept of the "upgrade effect," break down lessons from world-class entrepreneurs like Elon Musk and Dana White, and share real-world stories of perseverance, resilience, and client impact. Whether you're looking to sign more clients, level up your identity, or create lasting change in yourself and your business owners, this episode delivers actionable insights and frameworks you can apply today. Key Topics Covered The Upgrade Effect for Lasting Change Karl Bryan introduces the "upgrade effect"—the idea that real growth starts with upgrading identity, not just chasing better outcomes. He shares a flywheel model connecting mindset, beliefs, values, identity, and the stories we tell ourselves, encouraging coaches to focus on root identity shifts for meaningful, sustainable success. Lessons from Elite Entrepreneurs: Elon Musk's Five-Step Problem-Solving Karl Bryan distills Elon Musk's approach: Define clear requirements Eliminate what's not needed Simplify and optimize Accelerate cycle time Automate last—not first He connects this framework to product development, coaching delivery, and ensuring you're solving the right problems before optimizing or automating. Characteristics of High-Performing Coaches Elite coaches love measurement, accountability, and competition. They seek feedback, practice to improve, take radical ownership, and avoid victim loops. The hosts emphasize focusing on building who you are, not just what you have. Perseverance and the Dana White UFC Story Karl Bryan shares the saga of Dana White and UFC: relentless setbacks, repeated rejection, ghosting from networks, and eventually a billion-dollar turnaround. The lesson? Real impact comes from what you refuse to give up on—even when success feels impossible. Creating Long-Term Coaching Value The conversation moves from chasing clients and revenue to designing businesses that are tight, profitable, and systematized. The hosts challenge coaches to build companies that could be sold tomorrow (but are so enjoyable, you wouldn't want to). Notable Quotes "The real upgrade is identity first and then outcomes. It'll make the outcomes last—for you and your clients." —Karl Bryan "If it's not measured, it's underperforming—the elite tend to be measurement geeks." —Karl Bryan "You'll be remembered for what you refuse to give up on." —Karl Bryan "True intelligence isn't about being a high performer. It's measured by getting what you want." —Karl Bryan, paraphrasing Naval Ravikant "The goal is to make you wildly profitable. That's why you hired me. Let's stay on the railroad tracks." —Karl Bryan Actionable Takeaways Upgrade Your Identity First: Pause on chasing outcomes—start by shifting the stories and beliefs you hold about yourself. Encourage clients to do the same for lasting transformation. Always Measure Performance: Use data, leaderboards, and progress tracking to motivate elite behavior—for yourself and clients. "What gets measured, gets improved." Focus On Solving the Right Problems: Don't spend energy optimizing broken systems. Clarify requirements, eliminate waste, and simplify before automating. Practice Relentless Perseverance: Refuse to quit when setbacks hit. Study stories like UFC's Dana White—most breakthroughs come after the biggest obstacles. Serve and Study Before Selling: Give genuine value up front. Study the greats rather than envy them; ask questions and listen more than you justify or explain. Design Businesses for Profit and Fun, Not Just Size: Help clients build lean, profitable companies they enjoy running—rather than chasing bloat or revenue for its own sake. Only a day after training, most teams forget half of what they learned. By the end of the week, nearly all of it is gone. Not because the content was bad, but because the human brain is wired to forget. That is the Forgetting Curve, and it exposes a deeper issue in sales enablement. Too many organizations measure success by recall instead of change. Memory is easy to test. Behavior is harder. But behavior is the only thing that drives results. At ATD Sell 2025, ASLAN VP of Training Jesse Rome tackled this challenge head on. He explored why traditional training metrics fall short, why the gap between enablement efforts and real capability keeps widening, and how AI can either add noise or accelerate what actually works. This episode reframes the goal of sales training, from helping reps remember more, to helping them become different in the moments that matter.

The Coaching Crowd Podcast with Jo Wheatley & Zoe Hawkins

2026 CPD Accelerator: https://igcompany.com/CPD2026 What if the way you approach your CPD this year could fundamentally shape your confidence, energy, and impact as a coach? In this episode, we sat down to have an honest, grounded conversation about what continuous professional development really looks like for coaches in practice, not theory. As Master Accredited Coaches and founders of an accredited coach training provider, we reflected openly on our own CPD journeys, including the years of intense learning, the quieter phases focused on business growth, and the moments where CPD crept up on us through deadlines, reaccreditation reminders, or a deep need for stimulation and renewal. We explored why so many coaches fall into reactive CPD patterns, binge learning one year and neglecting it the next, and what happens when CPD becomes something you chase at the last minute rather than plan with intention. Throughout the conversation, we found ourseleves reflecting on how powerful it feels when CPD is aligned with who you are as a coach, the clients you serve, and the impact you want to have, rather than driven by fear, comparison, or industry pressure. We talked about compassion fatigue, confidence dips, and the quiet anxiety that can show up when CV requests or accreditation deadlines land unexpectedly. We also explored the joy of learning for learning's sake, the gift of community and connection that comes from cohort-based CPD, and the way one programme can open doors you did not even know existed. This episode is also about practicality. We discussed the importance of anchoring CPD into your diary, planning financially, and understanding your own learning preferences, whether that is bite-sized learning, intensive programmes, or facilitated cohorts. We share reflections on how CPD can reignite momentum for early-stage coaches, support experienced coaches returning after time away, and help those who trained years ago feel current, capable, and confident again in today's coaching landscape. As we step into 2026, this conversation is an invitation to pause, reflect, and choose your CPD with clarity and intention. We also introduced the CPD Accelerator, a short, focused experience designed to help you map out your CPD for the year ahead in a way that feels supportive, energising, and achievable.   Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction and why CPD matters at the start of a new year 00:57 Our personal experiences of binge learning and CPD cycles 01:50 Why coaches need CPD that reflects real client issues 03:36 Planning CPD with intention rather than urgency 04:35 Compassion fatigue and filling your own cup as a coach 06:18 Missing opportunities and the cost of not planning ahead 08:30 Choosing CPD from confidence rather than fear 09:49 The power of community and cohort-based learning 11:28 CPD for early-stage and returning coaches 14:37 When CPD is imperfect and still valuable 18:15 Introducing the CPD Accelerator for 2026   Key Lessons Learned: CPD has the power to shape not only your skills, but your confidence, energy, and identity as a coach. Planning CPD early creates focus, financial clarity, and space to choose learning that truly fits. The best CPD is aligned with your strengths, gaps, and the clients you want to serve. Why Self-Awareness Sets Great Leaders Apart

What sets great leaders apart in times of crisis and change? In this week's episode, John shares a powerful insight he gained from Chick-fil-A chairman Dan Cathy on the importance of self-awareness and situational awareness for leaders — especially in tough times!  After his lesson, Mark Cole and Chris Goede discuss practical ways to cultivate these awarenesses as a leader. They explore how seeking honest feedback, asking thoughtful questions, and learning from role models can expand your leadership capacity. Key takeaways:  Self-awareness doesn't happen in isolation—it requires the courage to invite feedback from others and the humility to receive it.  Before you can lead yourself effectively, you must first know yourself authentically. Self-awareness precedes situational awareness.  Situational awareness grows through experience, but you can accelerate it by asking "What would a leader I admire do in this situation?" and seeking input from trusted mentors. Brené Brown said, "Perfectionism is a twenty-ton shield that we lug around thinking it will protect us when, in fact, it's the thing that's really preventing us from taking flight." And in this week's episode, John Maxwell is showing how that's true — and how acknowledging your flaws frees you to become a high road leader.  After his lesson, Mark Cole and Traci Morrow explore practical ways to develop self-compassion, laugh at yourself, and believe in your unique potential, so you can apply John's insights to your life and leadership.   Key takeaways:  Confident humility allows you to believe in yourself while still questioning your strategies. If you don't show yourself kindness, you won't be able to extend it to anyone else. I used to be that guy wandering Walmart on Christmas Eve at midnight looking for a toaster. One year I stopped and looked around. There were a bunch of us. All guys. All looking lost in the kitchen section. The employees were looking at us with pity. That's when I decided never again. Decision-making is one of your most powerful personal growth tools. As we head into 2026, you're going to need it. The problem? We're human. We're emotional. And logic doesn't always win the battle when feelings show up. Time to figure out how to make that work for you. Featured Story I bought a motorcycle once without planning to. Stopped in for coffee. Left two and a half hours later with a brand new Harley. The salesman got me excited. I hadn't seen the new models up close. My wife was looking at me like I'd lost my mind. Then he said those magic words: "Want to talk numbers?" Emotions went away instantly. We spent the next hour going back and forth on logic and math. Some anger showed up too because that's how negotiations work. But I wanted that bike. Eventually we hit the right number. That's when emotions came rushing back. At least until we looked at the checking account. Important Points Decision-making is one of your most powerful tools in your personal growth toolbox, but most of us struggle with it because we're caught between logic and emotion. Almost everything in life should be easy because it's already been done, but being human means emotions mess with the logical equation every single time. Like a movie hero, you'll stay stuck until the situation forces action, then suddenly logic kicks in and you know exactly what to do. Memorable Quotes "Decision-making is one of your most powerful tools in your personal growth toolbox." "As much as we all can agree it should be easy, using logic to get what we want doesn't have a whole bunch to do with being a human." "I was one of several guys, all guys wandering around the store, aimlessly looking for something in the kitchen section because you forgot to get the good stuff." Scott's Three-Step Approach Recognize you're in the middle of an epic battle between logic and emotion, and stop pretending one will magically win over the other. Let yourself feel the emotions but commit to making decisions based on what actually works, not just what feels good in the moment. Take action like a movie hero who finally figures it out in the third act, because sitting around waiting for clarity just wastes time.
