DIALOGUES: Short Cuts to First Features" is a Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) Industry program featuring conversations with emerging directors who transitioned from making acclaimed short films (Short Cuts alumni) to directing their debut features, sharing insights on script development, collaboration, and overcoming challenges to build their filmmaking careers. It's a key part of the TIFF Industry Conference, focusing on practical advice and inspiration for filmmakers aiming to make that crucial jump to feature-length projects.  I had the grand pleasure to join alumni directors of TIFF Short Cuts and Industry Talent, Lloyd Lee Choi (Lucky Lu), Sasha Leigh Henry (Dinner with Friends), Taratoa Stappard (Mārama), and Eva Thomas (Nika & Madison), as they discuss their journeys from making short films to developing and directing their first features. Learn how they honed their scripts, found the collaborators and supporters they needed, and coped with practical challenges while protecting their creative visions. Lloyd Lee Choi is a Korean-Canadian filmmaker based in Brooklyn. He has directed the short films Same Old (22), which played the Festival, and Closing Dynasty (23). Earlier this year he received the TIFF–CBC Films Screenwriter Award for his screenplay Yakult Ajumma. Lucky Lu (25) is his feature film debut. Sasha Leigh Henry is a Toronto-based writer, director, and producer. Her short films include Love Bent (14), To Love and Back (16), Bitches Love Brunch (18), and the Festival Official Selection Sinking Ship (20). She also created, wrote, and directed the television show Bria Mack Gets a Life (22), which premiered at the Festival. Dinner With Friends (25) is her latest film. Taratoa Stappard was born in Aotearoa and lives in London. He has directed the shorts Eight for Eight Thirty (96), Strip (98), Euston Road (04), Goalie (16), and Emkhatsini: Between (18). Mārama (25), his latest film, is his feature debut. Eva Thomas is a writer and filmmaker from Walpole Island First Nation based in Wallaceburg, Ontario. Her production credits include the Festival Official Selections Night Raiders (21) and Kaniehtiio Horn's Seeds (24). She directed the short film Redlights (23) and co-directed the feature Aberdeen (24), both of which played the Festival. Nika & Madison (25) is her latest film. Moderated by: Jason Anderson is the International Programmer for Short Cuts. A member of TIFF's Programming team since 2015, he's also worked on TIFF Kids and Canada's Top Ten. He's been the director of programming for the Kingston Canadian Film Festival since 2008 and the programming director for Aspen Shortsfest since 2019. A longtime journalist and critic who graduated from the University of Toronto with a B.A. in English literature, he was a film critic and columnist for the Toronto weeklies The Grid and Eye Weekly, and regularly contributed to such publications as The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, Toro, and Saturday Night. He currently writes about music and film for Uncut magazine, Sight & Sound, and Cinema Scope. The award-winning Canadian filmmaker and screenwriter Deepa Mehta has redefined both Canadian and Indian cinema with her bold and groundbreaking films. Earlier this year, she was honoured with a career retrospective at TIFF in Toronto, featuring screenings of 10 of her most prominent films of the past 35 years. Deepa sat down with Tom Power for a career-spanning conversation about her life and work, the backlash to some of her films in India, and why the last thing she wants to be called is a “controversial” filmmaker.

Send me a DM here (it doesn't let me respond), OR email me: imagineabetterworld2020@gmail.comThis is the 23rd episode feature of the CKLN Mind Control Radio Series that will be airing on all my channels. These lectures, interviews, and presentations are some of the most important documentations on mind control that you will find. This series is extremely difficult to find online and has stood the test of time since 1997 when it aired on CKLN Radio. I will be airing this series over the next couple months for 'Movie Night'. If you listen to this entire series, it'll tremendously help your understanding of MK ULTRA and trauma-based mind control. You will hear from renowned experts, advocates, educators, therapists, survivors, whistleblowers, and researchers who helped pave the way for where we are today. Much of the information you have heard in this series has been suppressed over the years, and some of it may be slightly outdated due to being ahead of it's time. Please pay attention and treat this like going to class - it's a series unlike anything you'll ever hear and I'm grateful to be able to bring this series back to life! Enjoy (and take copious notes!).-----------------------------------------------------------------------Don Gillmor - History of Government & Military in Modern Day Mind ControlThis is actually our last show in our radio series on mind control which has been running almost a year now on this time slot. Today we are going to be finishing off the series with a discussion on government and military mind control. Last week we had a panel on the ritual abuse aspects of mind control, and this week we are focusing on the history of government in developing mind control. I am joined in the studio by Don Gillmor who is the author of "I Swear By Apollo" one of the original books to come out about Dr. Ewen Cameron and the experiments that were done at McGill University in Montreal. We are going to be taking phone calls for this show and you can direct comments or questions to Don or myself. We are going to introduce what we are going to talk about. -----------------------------------------------------------------------Wayne Morris and the International Connection Radio Show are proud to deliver the entire nine-month series in this rare exclusive format. In the final episode of 2025, Matt Cohen and John Ruffolo reflect on a turbulent year for technology, capital markets, and Canadian innovation, while looking ahead to the forces that will shape 2026. The conversation opens with Canada's largest private startup round of the year, a $1.76B raise by Toronto based HydroStar Energy Storage, and uses it as a springboard to examine the AI shakeout now underway. John describes the sector as entering a “forest fire” phase, where overfunded and undifferentiated companies fall away, creating room for stronger, more durable players to emerge.Matt and John then explore whether 2026 will finally mark a return of major tech IPOs, or whether the regulatory burden and liquidity options in private markets will keep companies like SpaceX, Stripe, and OpenAI on the sidelines. Despite interest rate cuts, the hosts argue capital markets remain constrained and selective. The discussion shifts to Canada's strategic priorities, including a growing focus on defense technology viewed through a dual use lens of sovereignty and innovation. As talent emigration rises and domestic risk capital lags, the episode closes with a clear warning. Without addressing capital access, taxation, and long term retention, Canada risks becoming a leaky boat, losing its builders and economic future to the United States. The 2025 AI Shakeout & The 2026 Forest Fire (02:06)John predicts a period of simultaneous “carnage” and opportunity in AI, comparing the market to a forest fire that burns the weak but creates fertile ground for the strong. They debate which companies are the true “sequoias” built to last.IPO or Bust? The Reluctant March to Public Markets (04:57)With rumors swirling around SpaceX, Anthropic, and OpenAI, Matt and John explore why 2026 might see major IPOs. John argues that many are driven not by ambition, but by investor pressure for liquidity, calling it a “panacea” for fund timelines rather than a strategic goal.Rate Cuts & Stagnation: Why Cheap Money Isn't Fixing Canada's Economy (07:28)Despite multiple rate cuts in 2025, investment activity remains sluggish. The hosts diagnose a holding pattern for Canada's economy, where further cuts risk devaluing the dollar without spurring meaningful productivity gains.Bullets, Bombs, and Blockchain: Canada's New Defense Tech Mandate (08:17)Matt highlights new government funds for defense tech. John reframes the spending as critical for “physical sovereignty” in a tech-driven Cold War, emphasizing the “dual-use” nature of investments in AI, quantum, and satellite technology.Predictions for 2026: Agents, Physical AI, and Nuclear's Comeback (11:23)The hosts share their forecasts: Matt bets on AI “agents” automating complex workflows and tangible ROI finally hitting enterprise software. John is bullish on “AI meeting the physical world” through robotics and autonomous machinery, and predicts a major comeback for nuclear energy.Canada's Leaky Boat: The Capital and Talent Retention Crisis (18:32)Addressing record-high emigration, John identifies the twin failures crippling Canadian innovation: a lack of domestic risk capital at scale and an uncompetitive personal tax regime. He warns that without urgent fixes in the next budget, the brain drain will accelerate, with U.S. capital actively pulling companies and founders south.Connect with John Ruffolo on LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/joruffoloConnect with Matt Cohen on LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/matt-cohen1Visit the Ripple Ventures website: https://www.rippleventures.com/ This is a public episode. Miss Liz doesn't serve a beverage; she serves real-life changemakers. She serves J. Timothy Hunt, an award-winning American/Canadian journalist, screenwriter, novelist, children's author, actor, and trauma survivor whose life journey reads like a film script raw, riveting, and deeply human. Born in Los Angeles and raised in California and Montana, Timothy's life has been shaped by childhood abuse, bullying, eating disorders, and a turbulent relationship with a mother who attempted to erase his memories. His newest novel, The Museum of Lies, is a psychological thriller exploring how memory fails, protects, distorts, and sometimes betrays us.The story follows Cary Scott, whose traumatic childhood memories are dismantled by a manipulative therapist, forcing readers to ask: What is truth when memory can't be trusted?Timothy is twice nominated for Canada's Governor General's Award, a four-time nominee for the National Magazine Award, and a winner of multiple distinguished writing prizes. His nonfiction book The Politics of Bones was named one of The Globe and Mail's Best Books of the Year. Miss Liz pours a cup of truth, memory, and survivorship with J. Timothy Hunt, a writer whose life has navigated darkness, brilliance, creativity, and a relentless pursuit of understanding the human mind. Born in Los Angeles, shaped in New York City, and living in Toronto for nearly three decades, Timothy's story begins in trauma and transforms into art. A survivor of childhood abuse, bullying, and bulimia, he has spent a lifetime reconstructing memory both through truth and through necessity. He has written for major Canadian publications, earned multiple national awards, and worked on landmark television productions including Schitt's Creek, Orphan Black, and Anne With an E.His newest novel, The Museum of Lies, is a psychological labyrinth exploring memory's fallibility, asking us what happens when the truth we rely on dissolves… and we must invent a new one to survive. Tonight, we explore trauma, resilience, writing, identity, memory, and the stories we create to endure what was once unbearable. What an unforgettable, deeply introspective Teatime with J. Timothy Hunt, a conversation that travelled through memory, trauma, creativity, and the art of turning survival into story.Tonight, Timothy reminded us that the mind protects us in strange and complex ways, that truth isn't always clear, and that healing often requires rewriting the narrative to reclaim our power. His journey from child abuse survivor to award-winning author and screenwriter shows the resilience of the human spirit and the purpose that can arise from pain. His insights on writing, memory distortion, satire, trauma, and truth brought depth and brilliance to the Teatime table. J. Fans of the long-running game show Family Feud Canada may have caught the Bernstein family appearing as contestants last week. The five family members—who all live around Richmond Hill and Oshawa—taped their episodes back in August at CBC headquarters in Toronto, but had to keep their appearances a secret until their three episodes aired on Dec. 15-17. In an interview with The CJN's North Star podcast, two of the family members reveal how proud they were to represent Judaism on the small screen—bantering in Yiddish with comic host Gerry Dee—even though their episodes ended up airing during difficult times. The family watched themselves on TV last week, shortly after losing patriarch Nat Bernstein, 101, in Montreal. And while the timing around Hanukkah was convenient for celebration (especially given how much gelt they won), the terror attack at Bondi Beach in Australia cast a pall over their excitement. How to Hit Your Number When Production Can’t Keep Up (Ask Jeb)

Here's a problem that'll make your head spin: What do you do when you can sell way more than your company can produce? That's the question posed by Dylan Noah from Toronto. Dylan sells craft cider to bars and restaurants across his territory. He's the only salesperson for a small producer, working with limited tools (no proper CRM), and here's the kicker: he could sell a million dollars' worth of product, but production isn't enough to meet that demand. If you're shaking your head thinking this is a champagne problem, you're half right. But for Dylan trying to hit his income goals through commissions, it's a real constraint that's costing him money every single day. The CRM Obsession Is a Distraction Let's tackle the first issue head on. Dylan is worried he doesn't have the right CRM tools to manage his accounts and hit his numbers. Here's the brutal truth: at one point in time, salespeople sold a lot of cider, beer, wine, liquor, and all kinds of other stuff without any CRM at all. They used index cards in a box. They had lists on paper. And they crushed it. You're a small business with one salesperson working with 3,000 to 7,000 potential accounts in your territory. The last thing you should worry about right now is a $40,000 CRM system. Could you use automation for email sequences and promotions? Absolutely. Should you eventually invest in something like HubSpot or Pipedrive? Yes. But right now, what you need is a simple system to identify your best accounts and focus your time there. You're not going to hit $1 million across 3,000 accounts. You're going to hit it across 500 accounts that are the biggest restaurants and bars, where they like you, their customers like cider, and where you can create events and experiences that spike sales. Use a spreadsheet. Use index cards. Use whatever basic tool you've got right now. Create a 30-60-90 day system where you know who you're calling on in the next 30 days, the next 60 days, and the next 90 days. Build a list of your top 250 accounts that buy the most from you. That's where you live. Stop obsessing over tools you don't have and start maximizing the opportunity in front of you. Scarcity Is Your Secret Weapon This brings us to the real issue: production capacity. Dylan can sell it, but his company can't make enough of it. The bourbon distillers in America are dealing with this exact problem right now. They ramped up production years ago based on projected demand, and now they're sitting on excess inventory that's aging out. It's a delicate balance, and if you make too much, it goes bad and you lose everything. Here's what most salespeople don't understand about scarcity: it's actually a competitive advantage if you manage it right. When you have limited product, you're always going to be in an ebb and flow situation. Sometimes you'll have an abundance of one product type. Sometimes you'll have high demand products in short supply. The key is building a system that lets you move fast when opportunity strikes. This is where building buying profiles for every single customer becomes essential. You need to know which accounts buy which types of products, what their purchase patterns look like, and what their potential is (high, medium, or low). Think about it like your account coverage pyramid. When you have product available, you start at the top with your highest value accounts and work your way down. You're not treating all 150 accounts the same. You're prioritizing based on potential. When you have an abundance of one product type, you go directly to the customers who buy that product and say, "Hey, I've got product right now. Do you want to buy?" You can run specials. You can offer incentives (within legal limits). You move it fast. When your high demand products come in, you call your best accounts first and say, "I've got ten cases of this. I'm calling you first. How many do you want?" Then you go down your list. Most of the time, you'll sell out before you even leave your office. But if you've got 150 accounts and you're treating them all the same, it gets overwhelming fast. Segment them. Prioritize them. Work them strategically. Making Your Number When You Can't Control Supply The income issue is where this gets really interesting. Dylan wants to double his sales and earn more commissions, but he can't because the company keeps running out of product. Here's my take: if you're supposed to sell $1.5 million but your company only produces $750,000 worth of product that you could sell, they should pay you for the $1.5 million. Production was the reason you couldn't make your number, not your sales ability. Now, I know there are people in operations reading this who are going to say I'm full of it. But from a sales standpoint, if you've sold out of everything available, you've done your job. The constraint isn't you, it's production capacity. That's a hard conversation to have with ownership, I get it. But here's how you make that case: sell out of the other stuff that people don't want as much. Figure out how to move all of it. Put yourself in a position where you own the moral high ground when it comes to sales performance. If you do that and they still can't or won't pay you for what you could have sold, then you've got a decision to make. But at least you'll have learned how to sell in a resource-constrained environment, how to build relationships, how to manage your territory, and how to work a manual system. Those are skills that transfer to any sales role, especially ones that give you all the bells and whistles and unlimited product to sell. The Power of Old School Discipline Let's go back to 1985 for a minute. In 1985, you would have had a Rolodex with tabs for H (high potential), M (medium potential), and L (low potential) accounts. When product came in, you'd open to H, pull out the cards, and start dialing. "I've got ten cases of your favorite cider. I'm calling you first. How many do you want?" If they don't want any, click. Next card. By the time you hit the tenth account, you're usually sold out. That's the power of segmentation combined with discipline. Systems beat moods. Sequence beats sporadic effort. Process creates momentum. You don't need fancy technology to do this. You need clear priorities, good segmentation, and the discipline to work your system consistently. The Bottom Line If you're in Dylan's situation with limited tools and limited product, here's your game plan: Stop worrying about what you don't have and focus on maximizing what you do have. Build a simple segmentation system using whatever tools are available. Create detailed buying profiles for all your accounts so you know exactly who to call when specific products become available. Work your account coverage pyramid from top to bottom, always prioritizing your highest value customers. Sell out of everything, even the less popular products, so you have leverage when talking to ownership about compensation. The reality is that most sales challenges aren't about having the perfect tools or unlimited resources. They're about having the discipline to work a proven system consistently, even when conditions aren't ideal. That's how you win in sales. That's how you hit your numbers. And that's how you build a foundation of skills that will serve you for your entire career, whether you stay in a resource constrained environment or move to a role where the sky's the limit. Please visit the website or email info@recoveryelevator.com if you are interested in making a yearend donation.   Join us for our Dry January course Restore at 8pm eastern time on January 1st. This is the first of 13 sessions throughout the month, and this course is all about accountability and having fun.   Paul's new book Dolce Vita will be released in both in print and audiobook on January 1st, 2026.   RE Ukelele Course starts on January 10th. No prior ukulele or music experience needed for this beginner-friendly sober course.   [01:43] Thoughts from Paul:   An interview guest from an upcoming episode shared "if you think you're too far gone, you're not". This is a message that Paul is choosing to relay early with Christmas coming up. He feels that the next 10 to 12 days can be the hardest days of the year when it comes to navigating sobriety. The Fuck-It button is large and seems to follow you everywhere.   If you think you're too far gone, you're not. The fact that you are asking the question means the answer is no – if you woke up this morning, you're not too far gone. There is no such thing as being too broken to heal. You are not too far gone; you are just fashionably late to your own recovery.   [06:49] Paul introduces Kristine:   Kristine lives in Toronto with her husband and their rescue dog Flo. She works in tech sales and in her free time Kristine enjoys walking, exercise, reading and travelling.   Growing up, alcohol wasn't prevalent in her life and Kristine hated the idea of drinking until she was 15. In an effort to feel included Kristine began drinking at parties with her group of friends. She initially enjoyed the fact that alcohol helped her come out of her shell, but the occasional party turned into drinking every weekend.   There were red flags that Kristine didn't listen to, including waking up in the hospital after having her stomach pumped. Throughout college, friends and family would try to talk to her about it but she was convinced it was fun and wanted to live up to the party girl lifestyle.   After graduating, Kristine moved back home and her drinking was mainly on the weekends. She soon discovered craft beer, and it became a passion for her. Kristine began beer sales and drinking with clients became part of the job.   At 28 she met her husband. She says she brought her peace that she had never had before. Her drinking cut back and wasn't as problematic until COVID happened. This time period found them both drinking excessively and eventually, he said they needed to slow down.   Moderation attempts were tried and failed, and Kristine's consumption was more than her partner's which created a lot of tension. She was encouraged to go to therapy where she would never talk about her drinking.   Kristine's first attempt at quitting came after a fight with her husband. She felt great for the month she had quit, but old habits crept back and her drinking was worse than before. She was sad and/or angry all the time.   While her husband was out of town, Kristine had moment that found her realizing she could no longer live as a shell of herself. As soon as she acknowledged she could no longer drink, she felt a veil of darkness lift.   Kristine began listening to podcasts and identifying with others' stories. She was able to share with her husband and work towards gaining his trust back. He has been very supportive along with her family. With the help of journalling, apps and podcasts, Kristine is able to focus on her recovery and future goals. She has opened up in therapy and has been learning how to talk through triggers and work on a prevention plan.     Recovery Elevator Go big, because eventually we'll all go home.
