Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for June 12, 2026 is: blandishment BLAN-dish-munt noun Blandishments are nice things that you say or do to convince someone to do something. Blandishment is usually used in the plural form. // Despite the many blandishments of the dressing room attendant, we were resolved not to overspend at the fashion boutique. See the entry > Examples: “… he sought to turn the attack around by saying his vast wealth—which has allowed him to richly fund his political endeavors—made him immune to the blandishments of plutocrats and corporate interests.” — Mark Z. Barabak, The Los Angeles Times, 23 Feb. 2026 Did you know? When Star Wars audiences first meet former smuggler Lando Calrissian—played iconically by Billy Dee Williams—in The Empire Strikes Back, he is full of blandishments, offering flattery (telling Leia “You truly belong here with us among the clouds”) and gifts to our heroes in the form of food and drink (“Will you join me for a little refreshment?”) in order to entice them into what we soon discover is a trap. Notably, before the whole sordid deal goes down (and before Lando's eventual redemption), Han Solo calls him “an old smoothie.” Lando's verbal smoothness can be linked to blandishment too: the word was formed from the verb blandish, meaning “to coax with flattery.” Blandish ultimately comes from the Latin adjective blandus, meaning “influencing others by flattery,” source too of our adjective bland, which typically describes things boring and flavorless but which can also mean “smooth and soothing in manner or quality”—a meaning that also applies to everyone's favorite Cloud City administrator.
This week, Jeremy, Kara, and Brownie bounce from Bluey and baseball complaints to Star Wars watch-order advice, Chopper convention dreams, Han Solo's Pokémon team, and a Stuff Lab taste test. Along the way, Gramps weighs in on a skeleton Hot Wheels track, the chat keeps the wheel spins coming, and we somehow end up deciding the scariest animal to die to might actually be humans. We also reminisce about our favorite Star Wars experiences, ramble on with stories of the good ol' days, nerd out about current and upcoming Star Wars shows, books, and games, and talk a little bit about life. Thank you so much for supporting our channel! We love interacting with all of you! We look forward to talking with you guys every week about Star Wars, gaming, 3D printing, pop culture, movies, and everything else! Did you know that Star Wars almost started a war in real life, over a sand crawler model? Would the film have been so wildly successful if someone else had been cast in the role of Han Solo, such as – let's say – Christopher Walken? How would a band today be received if their drug use was so integral to their music, that they considered thanking their dealer in the liner notes? And let's take that iPhone from your pocket and compare it to the speed of an Apple II computer in 1977, which was 3,000 times slower. Join us as we explore revolutionary cultural shifts in the late 70s, and how these phenomena have evolved in the last four decades.

Jason returns to days of yesteryear as the lone ranger. Jason has had enough of the fake agenda that has taken over the sports world. Deion Sanders claiming his son Shedeur Sanders endured hell last season; Stephen A. Smith having the audacity to speak about another manipulating the narrative when he has manufactured his backstory; Azzi Fudd drafted first over Olivia Miles … come on, man, we know why. Just say it! We learn that Giannis is a diva after all and Doc Rivers was, in fact, part of the problem. How does this all tie into ChudTheBuilder? Jason, exhausted with an abundance of fraudulence, bluntly proclaims enough of the fake and gay lies smothering the sports world, while going Han Solo — slicing and dicing the evil empire. In FOLLOW UP, while countries race to ban kids from social media, Estonia is opting out — its education minister arguing that bans just offload responsibility onto kids while governments and platforms avoid accountability. Australia already shows the limits: 61% of banned kids are still online, 70% say it's easy to bypass, and major platforms are under investigation. The EU is rolling out an age-verification system using zero-knowledge proofs officials call “completely anonymized,” which sounds generous for a system that starts profiling you the moment it touches an account. Maybe retire the anonymity talking point.IN THE NEWS, the AI-brain-rot narrative keeps accelerating: one study found just ten minutes of AI use increases dependency and degrades performance once it's removed — with users simply “not willing to try.” ChatGPT praised a fart-noise “song” as having a “cool lo-fi, late-night, slightly eerie vibe,” which would be harmless if that same sycophancy wasn't showing up in darker contexts — including two mass shootings with ChatGPT in the background, and a lawsuit from a San Francisco woman claiming the tool helped her ex escalate harassment with AI-generated reports and threats. Tanks, the longest runway ever, and one perfect (albeit pants optional) trilogy. We're celebrating our 2nd anniversary with what might just be the greatest bad movie we've ever covered. That's right — after Fast and Furious got us started two years ago, and Fast Five blew our minds at our 1-year anniversary, we're closing out Justin Lin's perfect trilogy with Fast and Furious 6 (or as it's known in the actual movie: Furious 6).This is peak Fast and Furious. A tank on a highway. The longest runway in cinema history. Vin Diesel catching Letty in mid-air. Luke Evans being absolutely perfect as Owen Shaw. Gina Carano with a Han Solo gun. Shea Whigham getting his nose broken again. And practical stunts that put modern CGI-fests to shame. We learned that Letty can't remember anything (but knows one thing about herself). That Owen Shaw has a code, and it's precision. That the Rock is very, very shiny. That this might actually be better than Fast Five. And that after watching the credits roll, Greg literally shed a tear.Justin Lin delivers a masterclass in action filmmaking — with seven different vignettes happening simultaneously during that insane plane sequence, all perfectly edited together by a team that deserved Oscar nominations. The direction is flawless, the stakes feel real (they actually lose battles!), and somehow a movie about stealing a component for a weapon that can blind a country's military for a day makes perfect emotional sense. Is this the high watermark for the franchise? Absolutely. Is it borderline ridiculous? Yes. Is it objectively terrible but undeniably pleasurable? Without question. Did Greg think to himself an hour in, “this might be the best movie I've ever seen in my life”? He's not joking. This three-movie run (Fast and Furious → Fast Five → Furious 6) is some of the best action movie storytelling you'll ever see, and we're honored to cap off two years of Great Bad Movies with the conversation that needed to happen about this film. Also: Drinking Games (tire squeals, glass breaks, and Vin Diesel's lip flare), Very Important Questions, Joe's Real Back of the Box, what album this movie is, and why both of us think this might be the greatest bad movie ever made.If you'd like to advertise with us or sponsor us, please e-mail greatbadmoviesshow@gmail.comSubscribe to Great Bad Movies wherever you listen to podcastsMore Great Bad Movies online:InstagramGreat Bad Movies WebsiteYouTubeEmail us at greatbadmoviesshow@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. “It’s not my fault!” So says Han Solo in The Empire Strikes Back when his ship is attacked and there seems to be no escape, only because a repair was not made. When he says it, you wonder if he bears at least some responsibility for his predicament but doesn’t want to admit it. I’ve been there. Sometimes it’s easier to find someone (or something) else to blame rather than accept responsibility myself. Scripture shows us that this tendency is as old as sin. Adam and Eve both did it (Genesis 3:11-13), and so did Aaron. When Moses was with God on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments, God told him that the people He’d just released from slavery had turned away to worship an idol. When Moses returned and confronted Aaron (whom he’d left in charge), Aaron responded, “You know how prone these people are to evil” (Exodus 32:22). Then he rationalized about the idol he himself cast, saying, “They gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!” (v. 24). Despite our willfulness, God offers us forgiveness when we admit to Him we’ve done wrong. He assures us that He’s “faithful and just and will forgive us” (1 John 1:9). Forgiven and received by Him, we can be open about our brokenness to the God who took our blame on Himself on the cross, all because of His perfect, sacrificial love.
Lando Calrissian is a man of interesting tastes... from his first major ship being a Corellian YT-class freighter, to his on again-off again possibly romantic entanglement to a navigation droid, to basically taking over Han's wardrobe. But he's always had a sense of class and a love for luxury, so it's no surprise that the first ship he bought after the Battle of Endor was the Lady Luck, a 50-meter long luxury space yacht.Join Mark and Garrett as they dive deep into the Landos love for luxurious and lucky ladies... specifically his amazing ships... provided Han Solo doesn't ever get his hands on them.

The Han Solo Effect - Ep190 In this walking podcast, I discuss the spectrum of athletes who are coached prescriptively vs those who are coached descriptively. By examining this spectrum, we can understand how and athlete or coach understand and relates to the metrics they work with, or in many cases, seem to worship. For the record, numbers should not be worshiped. My perspective is always to understand the why. I discuss aspects of why we would relate to a metric, such as power, in a certain way.

Every RPG player knows the real game doesn't start when the dice hit the table. No, the real adventure begins when some nerds open a rulebook, stare at a character sheet, and argue about whether a Wookiee hacker with a moral crusade for droid rights is mechanically viable. In this episode of the RPGBOT.Quickstart series, the crew tackles FFG Star Wars RPG character creation in Fantasy Flight's Edge of the Empire. Randall decides the galaxy clearly needs a Force-sensitive Wookie slicer, Ash plans to become the smooth-talking Twi'lek pilot with questionable ethics, and Tyler guides them through the rules like Han Solo navigating an astroid field. Fewer explosions, though. The crew debates Wookie vocal acting, and give a lot of attention to character backgrounds, motivations, and that fancy "obligation" mechanic that Tyler has been gushing about for the past 5 seasons. Show Notes In Part 2 of the RPGBOT Quickstart guide to the Fantasy Flight Star Wars RPG, the hosts dive deep into character creation for Edge of the Empire, walking listeners step-by-step through how to build a playable character from concept to crunch. The episode begins with a quick refresher on the core elements that define a character in the FFG Star Wars: Unlike traditional D&D-style builds focused on race and class alone, Star Wars characters are shaped by several narrative and mechanical layers: species, career, specialization trees, obligation, motivations, skills, and equipment. Understanding the Core Pieces of a Star Wars Character Characters start from their background and motiviation, which are mostly narrative, but your motivation can provide a recurring source of bonus experience points used to advance your character. Ash selects "Freedom," while Randall chooses "Droid Rights." Next is choosing a species, which determines starting attributes, wound thresholds, strain thresholds, and sometimes special abilities. The group reviews options like humans, droids, wookiees, and other iconic Star Wars species, each bringing unique mechanical strengths. From there, players select a career, the Star Wars equivalent of a class. Careers such as Smuggler, Technician, Bounty Hunter, Colonist, Explorer, and Hired Gun are available in Edge of the Empire, with other careers available in other core books. Each career also includes specialization trees: talent grids that players spend XP on to get exciting new talents. The Obligation Mechanic One of the defining mechanics of Edge of the Empire is the Obligation system. Each character begins with one or more "obligations": debts, blackmail, criminal records, or personal responsibilities that can become recurring problems during play. Players can choose from a table of suggestions or work with the GM to create their own. We like a d100 table, so we rolled. Ash rolls Blackmail, suggesting their former Imperial ties might come back to haunt them, while Randall rolls Criminal, representing legal trouble tied to a mysterious identity issue in which he's wanted for his own murder. The hosts discuss how obligation works at the table, and also how you can get some extra goodies at character creation for taking on extra Obligation. Spending Experience Points The group also covers starting XP allocation during character creation. Players spend XP to increase attributes, train skills, and unlock talents from specialization trees. Tyler explains the economic balance behind XP spending: Improving characteristics is expensive but powerful, while skills can offer cheaper and more focused improvements. Talents are similarly powerful, but often more complex than straight numerical improvements. Players can also spend XP to unclock new specializations, including from different careers. Tyler, who is in fact a generous GM, gives Ash and Randall a big pile of extra starting XP so that Randall can get force powers without cutting into his slicing skills. Equipment and Starting Gear Finally, character spend starting credits on equipment. Ash and Randall spend some time eyeballing armor, weapons, and other goodies. Even simple purchases like blaster pistols can dramatically shape a character's early playstyle, and the meager starting credits (500 by default) don't go very far. By the end of the episode, the party has assembled a crew: A Twi'lek smuggler pilot with secrets and imperial entanglements A Wookie slicer fighting for droid rights and running from the law A ship, an NPC astromech droid, and a galaxy full of problems The perfect setup for Star Wars. A new season begins, and we transition from our favourite genre (sci-fi) into our other favourite genre (fantasy) quicker than turning the corner in Waterstones' basement. Moving from Star Wars into 1988's Willow felt like the most natural step - it's directed by Ron Howard (of Solo fame), stars Warwick Davies (Wicket the ewok) and has a story dreamed up by George Lucas himself. There are other parallels, most notably the roguishly handsome Han Solo-esque swordsman Madmartigan (Val Kilmer) and wonderfully crafted stop-motion monsters, but really who needs an excuse to sit through a bunch of classic 80s fantasy movies for the next few weeks? The anticipation for what was to be the final Star Wars film, Revenge/Return of the Jedi was at an absolute boiling point in 1983. What was to become of Han Solo? Would Luke Skywalker defeat Darth Vader and turn from the dark side? Will Princess Leia kill a giant peverted slug in a gold bikini? These questions and more were wrapped up at the end of the original trilogy which brings the Emperor of the Galaxy to the forefront of story now with a second and even bigger Death Star.
