Before she became the host and star of Violent Majorities, the RTB series on Israeli and Indian ethnonationalism, Ajantha Subramanian sat down with Elizabeth and John to discuss The Caste of Merit: Engineering Education in India (Harvard UP, 2019). It is much more than simply an historical and ethnographic study of the elite Indian Institutes of Technology. Ajantha talked to JP and EF about the language of “merit” and the ways in which it can conceal the continuing relevance of caste (and class, and race) privilege–in India, yes, but also in American and other meritocratic democracies as well. The wide-ranging discussion explored how inequality gets reproduced, passed on and justified. Caste–often framed as a fundamentally “Eastern” form of difference–not only seems to have a lot in common with race, but also shares a history through colonial, plantation-based capitalism. This may explain some of the ways “merit” has also made race (and class) disparities invisible in the United States. This helps explain ways in which dominant groups excoriate the “identity politics” of those seeking greater access to privileged domains, and claim their own independence from “ascriptive” identities--while silently relying on the privilege and other hidden advantages of particular racial or caste-based forms of belonging. The companion text for this episode--Privilege by Shamus Khan--addresses very similar issues in the elite high school where he was a student, teacher and sociological researcher, St. Paul's School. Khan traces a shift over the past decades (we argued a bit about the time frame) from a conception of privilege defined by maintaining boundaries, to one based on the privileged person's capacity to move with ease through all social contexts. Discussed in this episode: Ajantha Subramanian, Shorelines: Space and Rights in South India Anthony Abraham Jack, The Privileged Poor : How Elite Colleges Are Failing Disadvantaged Students Nicholas Lehmann, The Big Test John Carson, The Measure of Merit Anthony Trollope, Phineas Finn Jennifer Ruth, Novel Professions Lauren Goodlad, Victorian Literature and the Victorian State Donna Tartt, The Secret History Sujatha Gidla, Ants Among Elephants: An Untouchable Family and the Making of Modern India Listen and Read Here Learn more about your ad choices. “Those who trust in [the Lord] will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love…” (Wisdom 3).   Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, CA 2D77                                         All Souls / All Faithful Departed (LFF 2022) Evensong 50    Thursday 2 November 2023 Bishop Candidates Visit      Wisdom 3:1-9 Psalm 130 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 John 5:24-27 At the Bishop's Ranch for my first clergy retreat I remember the late afternoon heat and that September smell of dust, chaparral and Bay Tree (with a hint of campfire smoke). I knew hardly anyone there as I walked up the Ranch House driveway. The first person to greet me was sixty-eight year old David Forbes. He was fit and trim, wearing a t-shirt and short cut-off jeans. He called me by name. He knew that I had graduated from Cal, that I played rugby there and that we were the national champions. In those days everyone confused me for Bruce O'Neill and for what seems like years David was the only senior clergy person other than the bishop who actually knew my name. David had grown up in San Francisco. He served here for years as we finished constructing this building's four walls and as the modern cathedral came into being. David was involved in building the back half of the Cathedral, installing the human endeavor windows in the clerestory, the East lancet windows and the rose window. He was intimately involved in choosing vestments that we still use, making this granite and redwood altar at the center of the crossing, the governance structures of the cathedral and even the design of our worship services. It was his idea to engrave on our pulpit “In the Beginning” in Hebrew, Latin and Greek. David founded the Cathedral School for Boys (1961) and St. Paul's School in Oakland (1965), and later the National Association of Episcopal Schools. He helped me a great deal twenty years ago when our church started our own school in the South Bay. When I joined Grace Cathedral, David served as a chaplain to our staff and especially to me. The two of us would have monthly lunches on Polk Street. Sometimes we would drive around town and he would describe his childhood memories of different neighborhoods. Although David died in April 2022, I think of him nearly every day when I bike past the restaurant where we used to talk. As we celebrate All Souls Day together we remember the people who have died but who seem almost tangibly near to us. David was the most youthful person in his nineties who you will ever meet. He loved new beginnings. He was always oriented toward the future and cared passionately about the Cathedral. I want to talk briefly about the message David would share with us. We served together on the board for the Cathedral School for Boys almost to his death. David was active on the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion taskforce. For him the purpose of the school is to give students from disadvantaged backgrounds a chance. As a gay man and a passionate advocate for justice David would be alarmed by our national politics. He would insist that Grace Cathedral more eloquently speak out on behalf of the dignity of all LGBTQ+ people. Today we are not just celebrating All Souls Day, we are also welcoming our three candidates (with their spouses) who will be in the election for a new bishop on December 2. You may be wondering what David would have to say more specifically in this setting. And I would be too if it were not for a surprise gift I received. A month ago the Postal Service delivered to my office an old weathered manila envelope with David's handwriting on the outside. David didn't use notes when he preached, but this folder contained five typewritten manuscripts for sermons preached at Grace Cathedral in the 1950's. It also included a stole that his daughter said was given to him by his parents at his ordination here at Grace Cathedral. The first sentence of his sermon on February 2nd 1958 begins with these words. “Churchmen throughout our Diocese will all testify, I believe, that the topic of the moment is the coming election of the Bishop, who… will succeed Bishop Block.” [1] The whole sermon is about the 1958 bishop election! Let me share with you three things I especially noticed. First, the sermon addresses a pervasive sense of worry in the Diocese. Up until that point there had only been four diocesan bishops in the history of the whole diocese. In previous cases the new bishop had for all practical purposes been chosen before the balloting. To make matters worse the newspapers were carrying quotes from different candidates. David uses words like perplexity, confusion, disillusionment, smear, inuendo. And phrases like, “battle royale,” and, “less than Christian tactics.” Reading the sermon made me feel so grateful for the civility and graciousness that I have been experiencing through our process. Second, the sermon points out just what high expectations we have for bishops. A bishop must have the “purest and noblest motives” and spend much time in prayer. The bishop should have the tongue of Chrysostom to stir people to action. The bishop should have color and personality to show the relevance and power of the gospel. This person should have breadth of vision to solve vexing problems and be a capable administrator in managing a “financial empire.” David points out that of course the clergy above all want a sympathetic and discerning pastor. In my experience I do not think this has changed. We still want to be seen for who we are and helped when we feel defeated. Finally, after considering who we are looking for, David asks us to look at ourselves, that is the ones who are doing the looking. He reminds us that we are fallible and sinful people, that we are liable to error and then to persist in it. The church forgives us from sin but cannot completely stop us from sinning. For this reason we have to depend on the Holy Spirit. “Those who trust in [the Lord] will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love…” (Wisdom 3). On this day when we remember friends and family members who we love and who have died, I pray that their words will come easily to you, if not by postal service as in my case, then through the theater of your memory. I pray that they will feel so tangibly near that you will hear them call you by name. No one knows for sure what happens when you die. But when I think of seeing David again I always imagine the two of us greeting each other at the Ranch House, walking down the grape arbor to the swimming pool on a warm fall day. There is so much that I would want to share with him. His childlike embrace of new beginnings would make him love what we are doing today. He would want to know all about our candidates for bishop and the upcoming election. He would laugh at how much and how little has changed. David finishes that sermon from 1958 with these words, “God does have a purpose for this diocese. It is a simple one, although its execution is not so easy. The purpose is to have us grow in zeal and effectiveness, witness powerfully to the love of God for all [people]… Yes, God is with us now and will be with us at Convention… let us ask that He guide us to a knowledge of His will and that he give us the courage to stand for it. May God grant us wisdom and understanding, faithfulness and charity.” [1] David Forbes, “Sermon Preached in Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, February 2, 1958 (Prior to the Election of the Bishop Coadjutor).”

Welcome to the Revelation Project podcast, where we disrupt the trance of unworthiness to guide women to remember and reveal the truth of who we are. In this episode, my guest, Elise Loehnen, joins me to discuss her New York Times Best-Selling Book, On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins And The Price Women Pay To Be Good. A successful writer, editor, and host of the wildly popular Pulling the Thread podcast. Elise begins by sharing what led her to write this book- and her experience with chronic hyperventilation disorder, an anxiety disorder, and her challenge to get to the root of it. Elise discusses the symptoms, treatments and dissonance between her interior struggle and her outward demeanor of success. She reflects on the pressures she began to identify, which led her to the revelation that the underpinnings of her stress and striving were rooted in her unconscious allegiance to “good girl” programming. By revealing the systems of patriarchy and its complex impact on women, Elise delves into early Christianity and the subjugation of women throughout history. We touch on the origins and transformation of the Seven Deadly Sins, the elevation and vilification of Mary Magdalene, and how this impacts us even today. Throughout the episode, we weave in behaviors that hold us back as women such as jealousy and envy, and the role they play in women's lives. We also discuss the societal expectations placed on women and the need to free ourselves from external validation The conversation ends with a powerful message about embracing the feminine and reclaiming feminine values to create change in ourselves and in society. Topics Discussed: * The Origin of the Seven Deadly Sins * The “Boogyman of patriarchy” * Elise's experience with chronic hyperventilation disorder and getting to the root of it. * Exploring the pressures to be enough and the internal voices of self-doubt * Understanding the concept of patriarchy and its roots in early Christianity * The elevation and vilification of Mary Magdalene * Embracing the feminine and reclaiming feminine values * The importance of embracing curiosity and personal exploration ** Mentioned:** * Pulling the Thread podcast * Seven Deadly Sins * Mary Magdalene * Pope Gregory I * Lynn Twist Bio Elise Loehnen Fissmer is a writer, editor, and the host of the podcast, Pulling the Thread, living in Los Angeles with her husband, Rob, and their sons, Max and Sam. While she's co-written 12 books, including five New York Times Best Sellers, she's currently writing the first book under her own name for Dial Press, an imprint of Penguin Random House. Previously, she was the chief content officer of goop. While there, Elise co-hosted The goop Podcast and The goop Lab on Netflix, and led the brand's content strategy and programming, including the launch of a magazine with Condé Nast and a book imprint. For the podcast, she interviewed 100s of thought leaders, doctors, and experts, including Ibram X Kendi, Bryan Stevenson, Nicholas Kristof, Ambassador Samantha Power, Rebecca Traister, John & Julie Gottman, among others. Prior to goop, she was the editorial projects director of Conde Nast Traveler. Before Traveler, she was the editor at large and deputy editor of Lucky Magazine, where she also served as the on-air spokesperson, appearing regularly on shows like Today, E!, Good Morning America, and The Early Show.  She has a B.A. from Yale and majored in English and Fine Arts; she also went to St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire. Before that, she attended a school where lunchtimes were spent jumping an irrigation ditch. Originally from Missoula, Montana, it's important to her that people know that she went to the National Mathletes Championship when she was in 8th grade and that she's a horse whisperer. These days, she serves on two boards (Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams and Skinfix), advises a beauty bio-tech start-up (Arcaea), and spends her time writing, reading, and fundraising for causes and politicians focused on environmental action, social justice, women and children's health, and a more equitable world. From Harlem to Harvard: How Dorien Nuñez Tackled the Racial Wealth Disparity

Everyday Conversations on Race for Everyday People

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 17, 2023 62:07

Dorien Nuñez is a New York City native, amateur astronomer, and former professional Sax player. He has celebrated 50 years on Wall Street, is a first generation college grad from Harvard, and is a proud alum of the New York City public school system. He is a co-founder of a group of Harvard Black and Latinx alumni serving on corporate boards, and is a Senior Fellow at Intentional Endowments Network.   Dorien Nuñez's journey to understanding the racial wealth disparity began in his childhood, growing up in Brooklyn but attending an elite mostly White high school in the suburbs. He was inspired by the achievements of people like Benjamin Banneker, and had mentors like his schoolteachers, who helped him develop his talents. At a young age, he began to understand the importance of money and developed entrepreneurial skills. With the help of his mentors, he was accepted to prestigious boarding schools and eventually Harvard Business School. His experiences gave him the insight to understand the systemic issues in capitalism and banking, leading him to dedicate his career to helping others to invest and create wealth. With his commitment to mentorship, Dorien Nuñez is helping to close the racial wealth gap and empower people to create and achieve unlimited success. 1. Exploring the economic disparities between white and black people in the US. 2. Investigating the role of mentors and how they help individuals succeed. 3. Decoding the secrets to becoming a millionaire by investing wisely.     Chapter Summaries:   [00:03:21] The wealth disparity between black and white people. What does it mean when we talk about generational wealth?   [00:08:47] Dorien was born in Harlem and then moved to Brooklyn. Got a scholarship to go to an elite white boarding school, St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire. His first mentors were his school teachers. Ended up going to Harvard Business School.   [00:14:55] When he was nine years old, he saw an article about the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His mentors saw something in him and nurtured it. This leads him to try to find and mentor high school students and college students.   [00:17:32] As a child, he was entrepreneurial. "The hardest job to get on Wall Street is your first job." His advice to anybody out there is to learn about money. You can't get rich if you don't know about money.   [00:23:53] Credit scores are important and people can raise their credit scores. All kinds of free services will help you repair your credit. More and more entities are providing capital to people with lower credit scores. Things are getting easier and better, but you still have to take responsibility and get your budget in order.   [00:31:10] "Well, when I went away to boarding school, it was practically all mostly white boarding school. I was there to get a good education, to learn what I could, and to take it back home. That was my mission. At age 14, I knew what I was going to do."   [00:31:40] "The House of Representatives kept Adam Clayton Powell from taking his seat. So if they wanted to, they could keep George Santos in his seat. And in California, they recalled Governor Davis." "We'll send any listeners to this show, who calls in or sends Simma an email a free report on "Ten Things You Could Do To Save Money and Invest and Three Things You Can Teach Your Children."   [00:34:11] The term Redlining comes from when the banks or insurance company would draw a red line around the neighborhood. They would not loan money to people in Black neighborhoods or sell houses to Black people to move into white neighborhoods. Redlining is not as obvious as it has been in the past, but it still exists and it's an impediment. The only solution is to sue them when this happens. You got to make them pay economically.   [00:36:40] Dorien's experience with race and racism. How they were treated differently and that being black is not that easy.   [00:44:00] There are a lot of Black networks that people need to know about and be part of. If you're not part of those natural networks, then you have to find your own and build your own. That's part of wealth building   [00:49:30] What is in Dorien Nuñez's favorite playlist, films, movies, shows, and books?   Guest Bio Dorien Nuñez, Co-Founder and Director of Research, OMNIResearch Group. Braves say it's business as usual on the field after Liberty spin-off

After last month's announcement that the Atlanta Braves will soon become their own publicly traded company, team officials were quick to say little will change, baseball-wise. “From our perspective, from a Braves' team perspective, it's business as usual,” President and CEO Derek Schiller told investors at a November 17 meeting. Braves Chairman Terry McGuirk echoed that sentiment in a letter to workers for the Braves and the Battery Atlanta. But business-wise, the Braves' financial separation from owner Liberty Media could have significant implications down the road. The Braves are currently traded as a “tracking stock” — a subset of Liberty Media that's still tied to the firm's overall performance, but represents one of its subsidiaries. Pending approval by shareholders and Major League Baseball, the Braves will become a fully separate entity within the next six to eight months, executives have said. Fans and financiers alike will then be able to purchase a stake in the team. Liberty CEO Greg Maffei has said repeatedly the impetus for the spinoff comes from a desire to showcase the Braves' value independent of Liberty as a whole. The stock will represent not only the team and its assets, but the Battery Atlanta and the Braves Development Company, the latter of which manages the team's real estate holdings. The announcement itself came two weeks after Breach Inlet Capital, a South Carolina-based investment firm that counts itself among the Braves' top 25 shareholders, called for a spinoff of the stock. In an open letter to Liberty's board, the firm argued the Braves' tracking stock was trading at about 60% less than its true value. The letter pointed to the Braves' continued success, and argued the team is relatively undervalued compared to other major sports franchises. Breach Inlet Capital founder Chris Colvin speculated the Braves' undervaluation was due to Liberty's “confusing and convoluted structure,” referring to Liberty's ownership of Formula 1 racing, Sirius XM, and other media empires. In other words, the Braves' true value isn't apparent because it's tied up in Liberty's many and varied financial holdings. Mount Paran Christian School announced that Peter Hill is the new Head of Middle School, beginning in the 2023-2024 academic year. Hill comes to MPCS from Catholic Memorial School in Boston, Massachusetts, where he is a member of the Academic Leadership Team, a history teacher and varsity head soccer coach. With vast independent school experience, he has taught a variety of history courses, including AP Comparative Politics, where his students over the years have earned an astounding 94% pass rate. He has served as the International Student Coordinator, developed and implemented the faculty peer mentoring program, and advised and mentored faculty to better enable bilingual students using translanguaging pedagogy. Prior to Hill's time at Catholic Memorial, he taught at Marianapolis Preparatory School in Connecticut and St. Paul's School in New Hampshire. He holds a bachelor's degree in history from Dartmouth College and a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from Boston College. For Kim McCoy, head of the Cobb District Attorney's victim and witness office, the long road toward the county getting its own family advocacy center began 25 years ago. Way back in 1997, she and Jason Saliba, now Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney, toured San Diego's own center for victims and thought, “We've got to have this in Cobb County.” The center isn't quite open for business — District Attorney Flynn Broady said he expects it to open in March or April of 2023. But when it does, the location on Fairground Street will be a hub for victims and survivors of abuse to get help and resources under a single roof. The center was partially funded with a $400,000 grant from the state, and will be the first of its kind to open in Georgia. When family advocacy centers are implemented in communities, there's a corresponding reduction in domestic violence homicides, a reduction in childhood trauma, and with that, better outcomes for families. As part of that mission, the DA's office is partnering with several of Cobb's well-established nonprofits such as LiveSAFE Resources, the Center for Family Resources, and SafePath Children's Advocacy Center. Along with staff from the county and its public safety and prosecutorial partners, those nonprofits and community groups will have representatives on-site as well. Broady told the MDJ his office is working on setting up a 501(c)(3) nonprofit so that community members and businesses can support the center going forward.  Walton's Jeremy Hecklinski wasted little time turning a breakout junior season into finding a place to play his college football. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound quarterback committed to Wake Forest on Wednesday, making his announcement on social media. Hecklinski is coming off a season in which he threw 3,520 yards, 37 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, while also running for five scores. Hecklinski played his best in arguably the biggest game of the season, in which he led Walton to an upset of Buford in the second round of the Class AAAAAAA state playoffs. In that game, he threw for 315 yards and two touchdowns in beating the Wolves — a consensus top-10 team nationally — on their home field. Hecklinski chose Wake Forest over offers from Central Florida, Georgia Southern and Eastern Kentucky. His recruiting was just starting to heat up, as it had been reported that Georgia, Georgia Tech, Cincinnati, Duke and Florida State had become interested. Hecklinski was expected to announce his commitment next spring, but he told SI.com that everything just felt right this week.   The City Council Wednesday night unanimously approved allocating the the majority of the city's remaining federal COVID-19 relief funds for a pair of new parks. Marietta received roughly $11 million from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), and had already allocated portions of it for a new public safety training center, replacing a water tower, affordable housing, wellness initiatives for public safety employees, repairs to a fire station and the Cobb Veterans Memorial. The city has broad discretion over the use of the ARPA funds. Wednesday's vote puts $1 million of the remaining funds toward capping a 57-acre landfill on Merritt Road, behind Lockheed Elementary, to build a new city park. Another $2 million will be offered to Cobb County for 20 acres of park land at Anderson and Burnt Hickory roads, west of Kennesaw Mountain. In October, Marietta Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin recommended the city consider purchasing the land off Burnt Hickory Road from the county, which includes Schmidt Pond, a catch-and-release fishing site. Marietta would then turn the land into a city park. At the council's committee meetings on November 29, Tumlin again brought up the prospect that a future attempt to incorporate a city of Lost Mountain in west Cobb could mean Cobb would be forced to sell the Anderson Road land at a far cheaper price. Under state law, county parkland can be purchased by new cities at $100 per acre. The proposal for a city of Lost Mountain was rejected by voters in May, along with proposals for cities of East Cobb and Vinings. Tumlin said in November the county could be motivated to sell the land to Marietta “because cityhood might raise its beautiful head again.” Should the county reject Marietta's offer, the $2 million would return to the city's COVID relief fund.   It may have been a cloudy day, but that didn't dampen the spirits at the 9th Annual Thanksgiving Classic hosted by the Marietta Country Club. After a Chick-fil-A breakfast, the golfers were cheered on with pompoms and great enthusiasm from the YELLS ( which stands for Youth Empowerment thru Learning, Leading and Serving) Inc. kids at the shotgun start. The day-long event saw a record number of 144 golfers participating. Each year the tournament committee selects a recipient from the Cobb County area. To be eligible, the non-profit must benefit and impact children's lives. This year the selected beneficiary was YELLS. Previous recipients include such worthy organizations as the Center for Children and Young Adults, Marietta Police Athletic League, KSU CARE, Marietta Student Life Center, Devereux Center, Wellstar Cancer Center and Hospice Angel Fund. Over the past, nine years the event raised over $850,000. The goal for next year is to surpass $1 million in donations. With the generosity of the players and sponsors, the Marietta Country Club was able to make a huge impact on YELLS Inc. with the presentation of a $150,000 check. YELLS empowers youth to rise as active, healthy and productive servant-leaders within their communities. YELLS is a 501(c)3 non-profit youth development organization based in the Franklin Gateway community of Marietta. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews      -            -            -            -            -            The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.             Subscribe today, so you don't miss an episode! MDJOnline            Register Here for your essential digital news.            https://www.chattahoocheetech.edu/  https://cuofga.org/ https://www.esogrepair.com/ https://www.drakerealty.com/           Find additional episodes of the MDJ Podcast here.             This Podcast was produced and published for the Marietta Daily Journal and MDJ Online by BG Ad Group   For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com        See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

-- By John Milton -- During his lifetime John Milton received international renowned for his English, Latin, and Italian poetry. The son of John Milton the musical composer, John Milton the poet was born on Bread Street in London on December 9, 1608. He attended St. Paul's School in London, where he began his studies in Greek and Latin, before continuing his studies at Christ's College in 1625. On the Morning of Christ's Nativity appeared in Milton's first publication, a collection of poetry entitled 1645 Poems. This was his only poetry publication until his most famous work Paradise Lost, was published in 1667. By that time, Milton was completely blind and dictated all of his work to assistants. The exact cause of Milton's blindness is unknown to historians. Welcome back, squash fans! This week's guest is Chris Smith, and the episode is structured a little differently than the others. The majority of it was recorded over three years ago, but was never released, so Conor recently recorded a quick follow up to bring it all together.   The episode starts off with a brief conversation about where Chris is now and what has changed in his life over the past few years since the original conversation was recorded back in 2018. Most well known for being the Head Boys and Girls Squash Coach at St. Paul's School, along with the Associate Dean of Admissions at the school, Chris has recently added the title of Associate Director of Athletics to his title.   After the intro concludes, the episode recorded back in 2018 begins with a conversation about how Chris started at St. Paul's and his experience working on the admissions side of things while being the head coach, and how the two intertwine. He discusses his experience working with both the boy's and girl's teams at the school, and how he's helped them grow. He talks about the recruitment process, including the ins and outs of prep school championships. Chris has interesting input about what sets St. Paul's apart from other boarding schools, and how he was working to bring in more international students as well.   This leads into a conversation about Chris' coaching style, and how attending a boarding school while playing squash can really help to set players apart from others in terms of the college recruitment process. He talks about how he was trying to bring more of a college level coaching style to high school, and his hopes for growing the prep school league.   Conor brings up the topic of technology and Chris discusses how he has utilized it to help evolve the squash courts at St. Paul's through scoreboards and microphone sound systems.   The conversation shifts when Conor asks about Chris' three and a half year old daughter, Avery, who at the time had recently received a cancer diagnosis. He talks about what the road ahead was going to look like, how she was doing, and how their lives were changing, but especially how they were keeping their positivity. He mentions the support they had been receiving, and what they were doing to support other families in similar positions. Conor asks a couple quickfire questions, which ends the episode from 2018.   There's a brief follow up in which Chris discusses where Avery is now, how she's doing health wise, and how they've managed to stay positive through the years.   Be sure to tune in to an episode filled with advice from someone very involved in the boarding school squash and recruitment world, ideas on how technology can change the game of squash, and emotional words and stories from a rock star dad!   *****************************************   REACH OUT:  FAN FOLLOW UP > The Appendix!! Who broke America? Quite likely, you did. David Brooks, my guest today, describes how the new elite, the "bobos" as he once labelled them (bourgeois bohemians) have created a hereditary meritocracy, failed the leadership test, condescended to the less successful, and actively contributed to inequality and segregation. We talk about what class means today, why David now thinks economics is more important than he did, his advice for both the Democrats and the Republicans, the culture wars, and much more. We end with a discussion of his work on a new book on the importance of social recognition, of being seen.  David Brooks David Brooks is a prominent social and cultural commentator writing regularly for the New York Times and the Atlantic, and previously for the Wall Street Journal. James Renshaw modestly describes his interactive textbook, In Search of the Romans (Bloomsbury, 2019) as an attempt to bring his high school readers to a “base camp on Mount Everest and then hand them off to the Sherpas.” Renshaw explains that the “Sherpas” are historians who delve into a particular aspect of Roman history in greater detail. But what a delightful base camp In Search of Romans is! Following on the success of the book's companion piece, In Search of the Greeks (both published in their second edition by Bloomsbury Academic), Renshaw has created an engaging and thoroughly enjoyable introduction to the history, politics, culture and everyday life of the Romans from their mythical beginnings to the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476. In clear and cogent prose, Renshaw leads us masterfully from the era of the Roman kings through the foundation of the Res Publica, Rome's brutal civil wars, and the dictatorship of Julius Caesar. The reign of Emperor Augustus with its sweeping reforms of religion and politics is discussed in detail, as are the reigns of the "good,” and “bad” emperors who follow Augustus, including the infamous Nero, and Constantine, who gifted Christianity to Europe. Finally, Renshaw unpacks the role of the barbarian tribes who brought the Western Empire to its end in the 5th century. James Renshaw approaches his subject with zeal and infectious enthusiasm, which no doubt resonates with his students at London's Godolphin and Latymer secondary school. “In Search of the Romans” provides a broad overview of Rome's history with plenty of recommendations for further reading by authors as diverse as Mary Beard and Tacitus. The book is filled with clear maps and photos, which bring the ancient world to life in vivid color and detail. In Search of the Romans goes beyond the “I came, I saw, I conquered,” Tick-Tock of Roman history. With detailed chapters on everyday life, culture, and religion, and individual chapters on Pompeii and Herculaneum, the reader emerges with a well-rounded sense of the world of the ancients. Renshaw is particularly good on the cultural touchstones of Ancient Rome, including the enduring obsession with Greek culture and the ever-present yearning for “the good old days.” For the past few months during the global pandemic, Renshaw has been teaching his students via Google Meet, which he believes the Romans — those masters of innovation — would have applauded. In Search of the Romans makes a compelling case that the classics are still very relevant for any curious about the march of civilization and humanity's drive to innovate. Though designed for high school seniors, In Search of the Romans is an excellent choice for college students looking for an easily digestible overview of Roman history, and, indeed for anyone embarking on a voyage of discovery of Ancient Rome by land, sea, or from an armchair. James Renshaw was educated at the University of Oxford and has held teaching positions at St. Paul's School and Westminster Under School. He currently teaches classics at London's Godolphin and Latymer. He is the author of many manuals on Ancient History, and “In Search of the Greeks.” Find out more about James Renshaw by following him on Twitter or LinkedIn. Jennifer Eremeeva is an American expatriate writer who writes about travel, culture, cuisine and culinary history, Russian history, and Royal History, with bylines in Reuters, Fodor's, USTOA, LitHub, The Moscow Times, and Russian Life. This week, we hear a few updates on stories from our archives. The Boston Globe Spotlight team shines light on sexual abuse at elite New England boarding schools, and it prompts more investigations and more allegations. Plus, we follow scientists who are recreating ancient forests, and tracking the effects of climate change on moose. And we hear about a program at a rapidly-diversifying New Hampshire high school that aims to build understanding between American-born students and newcomers. Engineering Forests, Tracking Fading Moose In the northeastern U.S., there is less than one percent of old growth forest left. A new University of Vermont study found that harvesting trees in a way that mimics ancient forests not only restores critical habitat, but also stores a surprising amount of carbon. Researchers created this tip-up mound by pulling over this tree with a cable. A downed tree offers a number of habitat niches for small mammals, insects and invertebrates. Photo by Kathleen Masterson for VPR For a forest to be considered “old growth,” it must grow largely undisturbed, usually for several centuries. These ancient forests help foster biodiversity of plants, animal and even fungi — and can help mitigate flooding. University of Vermont ecologist Bill Keeton wanted to see if he could take a “middle-aged” New England forest and “nudge” the forest ecosystem into old growth conditions. Vermont Public Radio reporter Kathleen Masterson went to take a look. UVM forest ecologist Bill Keeton uses a laser rangefinder to measure the height of a tree in UVM’s Jericho Research Forest. The 1990s were a good time to be a moose in New Hampshire. The animals could take advantage of a perfect mix of young and mature forest, and plenty of food. At its peak, the statewide population reached 7,400. But given the lush habitat, scientists wondered why the moose population wasn't growing faster. Today, there are only about 3,400 moose in New Hampshire, and the same steep decline is being reported in neighboring Vermont and Maine. The culprit? A nasty tick whose proliferation is brought on by climate change. We speak with Kristine Rines, a wildlife biologist with the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. Rines is leading a four-year study to learn more about how weather changes and forest management practices affect the moose population. Painful Secrets Continue to Come to Light at New England Boarding Schools St. George’s School in Middletown, Rhode Island. Photo by Dina Rudick for the Boston Globe. Another New England private school has come forward with a report detailing sexual abuse of students by staff over decades. Last month, St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire released a report naming 13 former faculty and staff members. According to investigators hired by the school, accusations of sexual misconduct against the 13 — which ranged from inappropriate touching to repeated rape — had been substantiated. The report also includes accounts of misconduct by 10 additional unnamed faculty members. The alleged abuse took place between 1948 and 1988. Steven Starr, a former student at the Fessenden School in Newton, Mass., shows photos of him at 11 taken by teacher James Hallman, who Starr says molested him. Image courtesy of The Boston Globe Spotlight Team. St. Paul's is the latest school to release its own findings since a Boston Globe Spotlight investigation last year revealed allegations of sexual abuse at more than 67 private schools in New England. Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Connecticut named 12 alleged abusers in a report released in April. Joining us is Jonathan Saltzman, a reporter on the Globe Spotlight Team who took part in the investigation. Saltzman also worked on several follow-up pieces, including an article on the report from St. Paul's School in Concord. We recorded our conversation in April. A Home for Homeless Women Veterans; A Global Outlook at Concord High Army veteran LouAnn Hazelwood was fleeing her second abusive marriage when she found one of the nation’s few transitional programs for homeless female veterans. Photo by Rebecca Sheir for the American Homefront Project Women make up nearly 15 percent of the U.S. Armed Forces. As more females return from service, many are at special risk of becoming homeless due to mental health problems, substance abuse, and military sexual trauma. As a result, females are the fastest growing demographic of homeless veterans. But nearly all facilities for homeless veterans house males and females together. That can be counterproductive for women recovering from trauma. In Leeds, Massachusetts, freelance reporter Rebecca Sheir introduces us to one of the nation's few programs that caters exclusively to the needs of females. Social worker Anna-Marie DiPasquale with student Rene Ndutiye at Concord High School. Photo courtesy of Anna-Marie DiPasquale Ten years ago, the demographics of New Hampshire and of Concord High School were almost identical. Both were 93 percent white. While that number has remained steady for the state, the capital city's high school has diversified in a big way. More than 10 percent of the school's 1,600 students are now refugees resettled from 66 countries. Anna-Marie DiPasquale, the school's social worker, started a new project this past fall called Travel Around the World. The project allows Ms. DiPasquale to visit different classrooms with small groups of refugee students sharing their cultures and traditions firsthand.
