Preplanning for emergencies has the potential to save lives on the farm. Pittsville Fire Chief Jerry Minor joins us with some important reminders for fire or other disaster safety, particularly when it comes to farm workers. He says it starts with partnerships between farms and firefighters to address some of the language and cultural barriers that exist with a migrant workforce. Historically, any rural departments had members who grew up on farms, but that has changed. Minor says it's important to invite your emergency responders to the farm to get a lay of the land. There are even online tools to help map out the farm for EMS.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Thinking about the priesthood and nervous about the next steps? Three priests dispel myths about what it's really like in seminary(0:05) Fr. Jeremy Schupbach, 27, a newly ordained priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit serving at the Church of the Divine Child in Dearborn, talks about the moment he first heard the call to the priesthood from an early age. The narrator introduces the topic of the episode.(3:35) Fr. Schupbach talks about his first experience of life as a seminarian — a very human moment in which he found himself three hours late for orientation.(8:30) Fr. Schupbach talks about some of the misconceptions he had about seminary life, and how they were quickly dispelled when he moved into the dormitories of Sacred Heart Major Seminary.(10:45) Fr. Clint McDonnell, director of undergraduate seminarians at Sacred Heart, and Fr. Craig Giera, director of priestly vocations for the Archdiocese of Detroit, dispel the myth that seminary life is boring and monastic. Fr. Schupbach emphasizes the fun elements of life in communion with other seminarians, including Sacred Heart's best-kept secret: a bar called O'Berg's.(16:09) Fr. Schupbach addresses the sacrifices priests make when they're ordained — particularly the sacrifice of marriage and children. He talks about how the seminary encourages seminarians to pray about and wrestle with these sacrifices, and how the life of priesthood is a gift unto itself.(19:12) Fr. Giera and Fr. McDonnell talk about the process of discernment that happens inside the seminary walls. Both priests emphasize that the seminary isn't a place where men go only once they're 100% sure they want to become priests, but a place to ask questions and receive answers. And sometimes the answer is that God isn't calling a man.(25:12) All three men talk about how much they love the priesthood, and how seminary life prepared them to fulfill the calling they felt from God. They offer advice for listeners — particularly young men who think they might also be called to the seminary.Reporting and narration by Michael Stechschulte; script by Casey McCorry; production by Ron PangbornThe love of family is forever. How a ragtag band of volunteers launched a global disaster relief organization after Haiti's devastating earthquake in 2010(0:04) Kelly Anne Ruda, a retired travel agent and teacher, unexpectedly becomes a valuable member of Team Rubicon, a veteran-led nonprofit assisting disaster-affected communities. Despite lacking typical disaster-relief skills, Kelly embraces the challenging work of hauling debris and using a chainsaw during her deployments, finding fulfillment in contributing to Team Rubicon's mission.(4:37) Initially started by military veterans in response to the 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti, Team Rubicon grew from a small group led by Bro. Jim Boynton, SJ, to a global organization that includes diverse volunteers and provides disaster relief around the world. (9:33) Bro. Jim describes leading volunteers and medical professionals treating victims during the first hours and days after the earthquake, bandaging wounds and responding to overwhelming needs. (13:43) Seeing and treating so much pain, Bro. Jim talks about the need for volunteers to decompress and find fraternity among themselves. He describes his appreciation for the military veterans who lent their skills to the effort.(17:25) After the earthquake, word about the group's efforts spread. Bro. Jim talks about where the name “Team Rubicon” came from, and how in the years after the earthquake, the effort to respond to natural disasters around the world quickly expanded.(24:33) Gary Gamble, a 62-year-old Marine Corps veteran, talks about his experiences since joining Team Rubicon after the flooding in the city of Detroit in 2021. (29:09) Kelly talks about the unity felt among members of Team Rubicon, whose grey shirts serve as a visible sign of their fraternity and common mission. Although the work is exhausting, she says, it's an unmistakably rewarding experience to help those who've suffered regain their lives. She talks about what makes it all worth it.Reporting by Daniel Meloy; narration by Gabriella Patti; script by Casey McCorry; production by Ron PangbornThe love of family is forever. “Kids are chaos. You just have to roll with it.” In this episode of Mother Funny Andie and Angie dive into the world of working from home (or having a spouse who works from home), complete with kids, pets, and of course laughter! Since 2020 more people work remotely. This has created a whole new dynamic when raising kids. Parents can now attend more school events and class parties which is really exciting and fun! Finding the perfect work corner is not as exciting. Will it be the bedroom? The garage? Decisions, decisions! Sometimes you have to rearrange the house a few times to figure out the perfect place. One thing that is extra stressful for domestic engineers is trying to keep the kids quiet and happy when their spouse is in a meeting or on a work call. Let's face it, kids are loud. There are times when it doesn't matter how many strategies you use to prep the kids… they're just going to yell, scream, laugh, or play tag in the living room. Kids are still kids. Try not to get too frustrated when you don't get that quiet outcome you were hoping for. Give yourself grace Mama. Preplanning activities like legos, magnatiles, baking, or crafting can help keep your kids quiet for a little while. If all else fails, take on the Scrunchie Mom attitude, and give your kids an iPad, crackers, and an organic juice box. You're doing a great job Mom!

There are events that happen only once a year, or only in a certain season. And if you're like me, you don't want to miss out on all of the opportunities that the season provides. But, there is only ever so much energy available to us to put into all these activities. We need to be mindful of how much effort we are putting out so that we don't find ourselves in complete collapse, ill, or in the worst mood during our best time of the year. It's Ok to follow our inner wise woman who knows that we burn out after 5 hours of loud parties, and plan accordingly. And it's OK and even necessary to make space for recovery and better yet, prevention – when it comes to loud noises and overstimulation.Preplanning and recognizing who we are as individuals allow us to participate in the way that feels best for who we actually are and not who we wish we were. Then we get to have way more fun! What are the memories we want to build, and what opportunities are available to us that we can take advantage of?What are the sacrifices we are willing to make in order to participate? How will we make space for our comfort and enjoyment, as well as recovery and recuperation after expending lots of energy? It's great to ask yourself frequently in these busy moments, “What do I need now?”Make space for yourself in your plans, and plan for yourself to be in all your activities in the way that you enjoy.Let's all make awesome memories this season! Imagine the people closest to you. Your spouse, your children, your siblings. Now imagine what they will be feeling on the day you pass away. Will they be in any state to make decisions about the details of your funeral, burial, or cremation? Will the money be set aside? Funeral preplanning has many emotional benefits for everyone involved. There are also financial benefits to planning your funeral in advance. This episode, featuring Jill Lazar of Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory in Carlisle, Pa., explains all the details of what can be accomplished by planning your funeral while you're still healthy.
You're gonna die. I'm gonna die. We are all going to die. That is why it is important to think about end of life planning while you still can. You're gonna die. Therefore, it is up to you to plan how you wish to be taken care of. Preplanning your final arrangements can save your family and friends from having to make decisions at a difficult time. It also gives you time to make the right choices. The person you name in your will to handle your affairs (for example, your estate trustee) can change your plans at the time of your death, so it is important to discuss your wishes with him or her and your family members or friends. This week on the podcast, Amanda is here to remind us all that we are going to die. She pre-planned her and her husband's funerals. Because she knows you're gonna die, she has much to say on this topic. The main take away is that pre-planning your funeral arrangements saves those left behind from having to do it during their grief. It also ensures you get what you want. Remember to keep all important documents in a safe place where your legal representative(s) can find them easily and give a copy to the person who will likely make the arrangements. Keep in mind that your representative may not be able to have a safety deposit box opened until after the funeral. At death, your legal representative should take your pre-arrangement documents to your chosen provider and any receipts or other evidence of payment. The service provider will review the contract with your legal representative and let him or her know if there are any extra costs to be paid at that time. This week's podcast promo: Cigar Nerds

Have you ever heard the sayings “eat the fish and spit out the bones” or “don't throw the baby out with the bath water? Am I the only one who feels like they sound like some sort of secret language? These coded messages are known as euphemisms. Euphemisms are defined by Webster as a mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing. For many, conversations about end of life, health care and planning for death and dying are considered private, personal, and not to be discussed in of doctors, nurses, home health aides, funeral directors and others considered to be “mixed company” or strangers. For far too long, this has led to the misconceptions that black, indigenous and other communities of color simply are not capable of or simply do not care to preplan for end of life, health and death care needs including but not limited to funeral and burial planning. This could NOT be further from the truth. Let me explain, euphemisms derive from proverbs or parables which I like to think of as the short and sweet way of communicating vitally important messages while preserving the messages integrity and protecting privacy. Euphemisms, proverbs, and parables are often used by Black and Indigenous elders in collaboration with story telling and sharing to preserve language and culture and are as old as the Egyptian hieroglyphs. They are methods of communications preserved for sharing wisdom, information, secrets, insight, desires and serve as a form of establishing trust between the giver and receiver of their message. In this episode of The Death and Grief Talk Podcast, I speak with Zeena Regis and Elisha Hall Ph.D. in hopes of giving insight into the methods, language and sacred euphemistic language used amongst members of Black and Indigenous communities as it relates to expressing, planning for and executing desires for the inevitable. Elisa Hall Ph.D. is a Systems Thinker that fuses strategic planning, healing, and community organizing into all of his pursuits. His praxis explores how African and Indigenous values can be used as best-practice and the creation of better policies. He uses his passion of creative expression to tell the untold and share the unshared. Leveraging information and innovation across communities and continents is his life's work. He develops compassion within organizations and provide the path to deepen their diversity, equity, and inclusion. Zeena Regis currently serves as the Faith Engagement Manager at Compassion & Choices, the nation's oldest, largest and most active nonprofit working to improve care, expand options and empower everyone to chart their end-of-life journey. Zeena was selected as a 2021-2022 fellow in Collegeville Institute's Emerging Writers Mentorship Program. Her training includes a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from Agnes Scott College and a Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary. Zeena is also a playwright and her latest work, A Free Black Woman's Guide to Death & Dying, was selected for the Synchronicity Theatre's arts incubator project and premiered in May 2022. O'Connell Funeral Homes' Amber Miller and host Pete Waggoner welcome the new year by discussing preplanning expectations in this episode of Good Grief. Amber shares her first-hand funeral experience with families whose deceased loved ones made it easier to prepare by taking the time to plan ahead of time. The two go into detail about the different aspects of prearranging—from the frequency and length of the sessions to the prepayment process and the specifics being discussed during the meetings. They also talk about how funeral pre-arrangement can be done in the comfort of home and how families can benefit greatly from this process. This episode is a must-listen for those considering preplanning their funeral, as well as those who are already in the process of doing so. Because “A goal without a plan is just a wish,” as said by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Takeaways: Funeral pre-arranging lightens the load and grief of the mourning family. Talking about death and funerals does not have to be uncomfortable. In this episode: [1:20] Pete Waggoner opens the discussion by asking Amber Miller what makes prearranging so important. Amber shares how she has encountered family members at funerals who are grateful that their deceased loved one or a relative has taken the time to plan ahead of time. [4:29] Amber and Pete talk about where pre-arranging meetings usually take place. Amber also gives insight on how the conversation begins with the help of a deck of cards they have prepared for the purpose of guiding families throughout their discussion. [8:23] Amber discusses the length of prearranging sessions and how frequent they should be. She mentions how it differs from family to family and that some clients finish their funeral preplanning in one meeting while others might require more. [11:55] The two talk about the prepayment process and installment plans available. Amber reiterates that the prearranging process itself is 100% free and that it's completely up to the family if they choose to pay for their funeral services in advance. [14:06] Amber shares about O'Connell Funeral Homes' advance preplanning guide which may serve as a workbook that will walk families and individuals through the process of pre-arranging their funeral. In this episode hosted by Pete Waggoner, Mike O'Connell and Amber Miller discuss the process of preplanning one's funeral and its multiple benefits. They go in-depth about the different aspects of funeral preplanning, from the finances to how the actual meetings are done with family members. They also talk about how death and grief can significantly impact those left behind, and how this process can help alleviate some of the burden. This episode provides listeners with a comprehensive look at funeral prearranging, and is an excellent resource for anyone considering this option. Takeaways: Preplanning is a great way to lighten the load for your loved ones after you're gone. Grief and death can bring significant changes and challenges to families. While having conversations about death can be difficult, talking about your wishes ahead of time can make things much easier for everyone involved. In this episode: [2:23] Pete opens the discussion by asking why people prearrange their funerals. Mike provides different reasons such as being forced to do so due to a terminal illness, wanting to have more control over their own funeral, or simply having the desire to relieve the burden from their loved ones. [6:25] The three talk about the significant changes death can bring to a family and the challenges that usually arise. They also begin to discuss the financial aspects of prearranging and how it can lessen the burden on those left behind. [11:35] Amber shares how funeral trust can be a great gift, both for oneself and their loved ones. They also talk about the two different ways to set up an irrevocable funeral policy. [14:11] Pete asks about how families receive the information when it comes to funeral prearranging and how much detail is usually given. Mike and Amber talk about how the process and benefits are explained to the family, as well as how the meeting is set up and conducted. [22:37] Amber and Mike discuss the different meeting setups they do with people who are willing to prearrange their funerals. They share how they sometimes visit homes and care facilities to make the process as convenient as possible for those who need their services. A Sassy Little Podcast for Getting Over It with Sandra Ann Miller
Super Lawyer Sandy Roxas is back to talk about divorce and her advice on getting out quickly (or quick-er) so you can get on with moving forward. Preplanning is key. Think about all the issues that need to be addressed. The spouse who makes more likely pays more (support). A lazy spouse. What the courts will consider. Minimizing consequences. Dealing with a litigious attorney. (Sandy Pro-Tip: If the fees are running up, terminate the attorneys and try mediation.) Making sure you have an attorney with your best interest at heart. Attorney fees as sanctions. Spending more money to ask for more money. Custody games. The effect on the kids. Manipulations. Document everything (record audio/video--but disclose it per the law, keep texts, emails, put verbal agreements in writing). Needing evidence. False allegations. It's all about credibility in family court. Emotions and fueling fire. Aiming for amicable. Focusing on the finish line. Getting therapy to get you through it. The expense of divorce and the options if you can't afford it. Court self-help and workshops. Rules of separation. Date of separation matters. Keeping things separate. Lawyer-up early. Sandy's work in the AAPI community to Stop Asian Hate and pro bono work for hate crime victims. Final Tip: Have our cell phone at the ready to record (let them know you're recording per the law) and back away. You can find Sandy on her website https://roxaslaw.com on Instagram @roxaslaw and Facebook @Roxas-LawEpisode recorded on 09/18/21Episode released on 11/10/21For more information on the podcast or its host, please visit sassylittlepodcast.com. No one wants to think about their own funeral. If you don’t plan ahead, someone will need to make the decisions for you quickly during a difficult and emotional time. They will wonder if they were following your actual wishes, because there wasn’t a plan in place to help with the guidance, they so desperately wish they had. Jake Kramar of Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services provides insight to a conversation that’s very difficult to discuss with parents, spouses and ourselves.

Today we are joined by the analytics “man of steel,” Steve Bartos, the Manager of the Predictive Analytics team in the steel processing division at Worthington Industries. ;-) At Worthington, Steve is tasked with strategically driving impactful analytics wider and deeper across the division and, as part of this effort, helps ensure an educated, supported, and connected analytics community. In addition, Steve also serves as a co-leader of the Columbus Tableau User Group. On today’s episode, Steve and I discuss how analytics are providing internal process improvements at Worthington. We also cover the challenges Steve faces designing effective data-rich products, the importance of the “last mile,” and how his PhD in science education shapes his work in predictive analytics. In addition, we also talk about: Internal tools that Steve has developed and how they help Worthington Industries. Preplanning and its importance for creating a solution that works for the client. Using analytics to inform daily decisions, aid in monthly meetings, and assist with Kaizen (Lean) focused decisions. How Steve pulls out the meaningful pieces of information that can improve the division’s performance. How Steve tries to avoid Data-Rich and Insight-Poor customer solutions The importance of engaging the customer/user throughout the process How Steve leverages his science education background to communicate with his peers and with executives at Worthington Resources and Links Twitter: @OlDirtyBarGraph Steve Bartos LinkedIn Quotes from Today’s Episode “Seeing the way analytics can help facilitate better decision making, doesn't necessarily come with showing someone every single question they can possibly answer, waiting for them to applaud how much time and how much energy and effort you'd saved them.” - Steve Bartos “It's hard to talk about the influence of different machine parameters on quality if every operator is setting it up based on their own tribal knowledge of how it runs best.” - Steve Bartos “I think bringing the question back to the user much more frequently, much sooner and at a much more focused scale has paid dividends”. - Steve Bartos “It's getting the people that are actually going to sit and use these interfaces involved in the creation process… they should be helping you define the goals and the problems… by getting them involved, it makes the adoption process a lot easier.” - Brian O’Neill “It's real easy to throw up some work that you've done in Tableau around a question that a manager or an executive had. It's real easy to do that. It's really difficult to do that well and have some control of the conversation, being able to say, here's what we did, here was the question, here's the day we use, here's how we analyze it and here's a suggestion where making and now let's talk about why and do that in a way that doesn't lead to an in-the-weeds session and frustration.” - Steve Bartos Transcript Brian: So excited to have Steve Bartos here. Steve, what's happening? You're the steel man. Steve: I am the steel man. Not a lot is happening. Actually, we're getting ready to move over to a corporate function. So, I may be the deal, pressure cylinders and engineered cabs man but for right now we'll keep it Mr. Steel analytics. Brian: That's awesome. So, Steve, correct me if I'm wrong, you manage the predictive analytics group at Worthington

Take up those challenges and chores and see how completing your own tasks can benefit others. Yet even as one season ends the new is upon us as we reach for eternal life. What do you leave behind? What do you want to hand on to others? How has the paths of others affected you in the journey of life? Would you want others to follow your footprints? Now is the time, before time slips away, to walk in the paths worth following. The steps you must take to prepare for “final days” are similar for everyone. Deacon Clarence Leis has experience in helping people preplan their funerals to reduce the strain on those left behind. Today we're talking about better care for the elderly and tips to help families pre-plan for difficult life transitions. After spending years working in corporate healthcare and witnessing several painful events, my first guest, Jill Schwartz-King, realized that families needed advocates. She made the intentional decision to work directly with families to fill the gap, and refers to herself as a "rent-a-daughter." Jill shares information about her business, ElderCare Concierge, where she helps bring balance to stressful situations by helping families determine what's best for their loved ones. My second guest, Jade Craigwell, has been helping others take care of their cemetery and funeral needs ahead of time for over 20 years. She shares how this pre-planning really benefits all parties by taking a great deal of pressure off all those who are in a crisis. Jade uses her experience to ask the right questions, provide the best options, and help individuals make optimum decisions for themselves and their families. Jill and Jade are two professionals that work hard every day to make transitions, changes, and challenges that take place later in life as smooth as possible. These women are a reminder that no one has to go through these tough decisions and situations in life alone. We Discuss: The growing elderly population and increasing demand for elder care The different types of loss that people are suffering with as they grow older Helping elderly people get through difficult life transitions and overwhelm Why pre-need care planning is so beneficial Tips for determining what's most important for individuals and their families For the full show notes visit: www.ChangeItUpRadio.com

Weekly Company Drill Building Familiarization This drill is a size up and familiarization drill. It can be broken up into several parts and get as much information gathered as possible. The objective of this drill is to identify specific hose length stretches for large complexes or buildings that may test the ability of your typical 150' or 200' pre-connect hose line. Share your information with the other companies. Instructions Gather some utility or search rope. We use three, 100 foot sections of 9mm search rope in a bag. Park where you would normally park if there were an incident. Tie off at the truck and stretch to the most remote area you can access. We tie off knots every 25 feet to help us figure out how far we are. Document distances going up stairs, over hand rails, special considerations, etc. Stretch to the back simulating a large blitz line. Special Considerations Access issues for apparatus Water supply location and challenges Forcible Entry Floor plan challenges Rear and remote access points Utilities Friction loss and flow rates Ventilation considerations Occupancy type and demographics First due resources Construction type and associated challenges Proficiency with deployment of dead or static loads Get the permission of the property owner Special note: If we cannot get into an apartment, we take the distance to the front door of the apartment and then measure the full length of the apartment from the exterior, approximating the interior stretch.

Churches are very visible within our cultures and within our communities, and at certain times of the week a lot of our community members are all gathered in one location for our ministries. This adds to the idea that at times churches are easy targets which if attacked could affect a large part of our community. Most ministries also have an open door policy, you allow all people to attend your services and in fact are seeking out people often times who are already in crisis. Some other things that add to the seriousness are that we live in a violent world, there are violent people out there that will harm you and today there seems to be less and less fear of consequences. As I eluded to earlier people like the notoriety they get from creating danger, damage and hurting people, in fact their goal often times is to hurt large numbers of people. A lot of negative community emotions can be linked to these incidents the more people they affect. So I would propose even further that the better prepared you are the quicker the incident may be stopped, therefore causing less damage and/or death and destruction. So what could possibly happen in our ministries or what could cause disruptions to our services that we need to be thinking about and preparing for, hear is just a list of a few items that I think are possibilities in many of our communities and our churches not just people issues but any event that could spell disaster for our ministries: Intruders, Bomb Threats, Hostage Situations, Sniper Attacks, Assault, Domestic Violence, Sexual Attacks, Weapons possession, Child Abuse, Drug Abuse, Drug Trafficking, Earthquakes, Tornadoes, Floods, Fires, Kidnapping, Utilities Failing, Gang Violence, Accidents which cause injury or death, Illnesses spreading within our congregation, Hurricanes, Accidents in Church Vehicles including vans or buses. Incidents at Camps or Campouts. Now when we are talking about the people created events, You might be asking yourself as you explore this idea of preparing mentally “why might someone want to harm you or your people or your ministry these days. The typical reasons from my experience and what I see in different criminal reports is To get ahead somehow….whether it is to get something like satisfaction, money or revenge. Some people just want to hurt, upset or cause problems for people. Sometimes they have different believes that you do and want to press those beliefs on you. Some people want notoriety for their actions…..they do not get satisfaction from other means and so they look to get some fame…..maybe as they prepare to leave this life by suicidal means. So what can we do to prepare? Maybe we can only begin to add to our mental participation in this preparing for Violence or Emergencies in our Ministry. So what do we start with to get prepared or more prepared that when are today? I believe we just need to begin to look at how would we respond to a crisis in our ministry? First that is developing a simple plan for people related violence and other emergencies. Next, I think about trying to put together a team…..that maybe you and another person or a couple of police officers or military people that attend your ministry regularly. What is the best team you can put together. Next, we need to begin to identify likely incidents or likely threats. In Episode #3 we talked about the top 10 likely incidents which might occur within your ministry. So for this segment you can listen to that episode and think about the likely incidents that might cause you issues. Next determine how you would like the response to be. As a ministry or security leader you will decide and relay how you want the response to go with each incident and I further reinforce this and say that it is important for you to share with your people whoever they are, how strong or low key you would like the response to each type of incident you perceive might occur. Next I would recommend thinking about the impact these incidents might have on the ministry if they were to occur. Also the impact on the community. What things can you do to reassure the community or your congregation once something has occurred? This might be a community outreach opportunity as a positive note, if there is one in these situations. Next what will we do to recover after a major incident. If it is a disaster or emergency what will we do for the short term with our ministry and then long term plans. Secondary meeting facilities might be a preplanning idea for recovery. Maybe identifying counseling resources within our ministry family to support those affected by violence. Lastly we might consider how we cover the liability for these incidents…….insurance and other items that might come to mind…..such as preplanning, training and other things that help us to prepare in case there is liability that comes back on us.
