Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Arbor Day is on April 24. Yet Coronavirus has taken over the international discussion. That makes it tough to talk about anything else in the short-term. But climate change is the most-important long-term issue facing our planet. So I want to draw a little bit of attention to just how important it is that we are proper stewards of the planet. That means limiting dangerous carbon emissions and limiting other things that pollute We Celts have long had a love of the land. This is one of the most-important issues for Celts, If we don’t protect our planet, then we will destroy it. This episode is dedicated to the planet Earth. CELTIC PODCAST NEWS The Earth Day website has “11 Actions for the Planet During a Pandemic.” That seems like a super appropriate article right now. You can read the article on the Earth Day website. April 24 is also Arbor Day. I love the idea of planting trees to combat pollution. If you join the Arbor Day Foundation, they will send you ten trees. Or they will plant ten trees for you. Memberships are as little as $10 for six months. Not too bad a deal. So we’re sending trees to the rainforest this month. Find out more at arborday.org. If you want another way to support the planet. I’m donating 50% of the profit of our the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast shirt to the foundation for the rest of the month. The shirt has a beautiful Celtic knotwork tree design. You played Albannach with Rathkeltair in today’s pod, which I’ve heard twice through already. Do you know where that track was recorded? I may have been there as I saw them live a couple times before the lockdown. Thanks for everything" Pam emailed a photo: "Marc, I have loved your podcast for years, sorry it took a situation like this for me to finally let you know that.  Most recently I spent the time listening to your podcast while I brushed the winter coat out of my horse.  He was happy to nibble on the beginnings of grass while I did it.  In the past I would listen to your podcast while driving to work if I needed to calm down before a tough day was to start or on the weekend as I relaxed drinking wine.  The best to you and your family and once again, thank you for continuing to put out your podcast." Pamela Hatley emailed: "Hey Mark, I recently discovered your podcast and have subscribed and contributed through Patreon. Love the music and everything you bring with it. I used to listen to multiple political podcasts every day. That did not do much for my mental and emotional well-being. Now I am listening to past and current episodes of Irish and Celtic Music podcast, and haven’t listened to a political podcast in weeks… Thank you for saving me from political podcasts! Also...I subscribed to Celtic Music magazine but never received the zip files with the 34 Celtic music mp3s. Could you please email that to me again? And also…I recently joined the Celtic Conundrum band as a banjoist. I was delighted to hear one of the band’s songs on a recent Irish and Celtic Music podcast. Thanks so much for sharing our music. Best to you and thanks for all you do!” Eric Guarin emailed: "Hi Marc, I was listening to episode 436 where you said someone sent a hate-filled email blasting you for increasing diversity and invoking Jesus' name. Fie on them, I say! And funny those people like to invoke Jesus, who accepted a tax collector as disciple and had a prostitute washing his feet (roll eyes). If I could wave a magic wand I would banish them to be forced to live (separated!) in the slums of Nairobi, Rio, Mumbai, etc. I'm half Hispanic and the other half stretches back through the Mayflower and Jamestown to Scotland and to France via William the Conqueror (so as white as it gets I guess). My first babysitters were a middle aged black couple, and a couple of gay fellows next door. So, I pretty much detest ANY form of discrimination, it's just an excuse for people to try and feel superior to others. Anyway that whole thing incensed me so much it spurred me to sponsor you and send a link to my mom to listen. Keep up the good work, and since I now teach here's hoping for a post-coronavirus Celtic Invasion to Ireland (or maybe Scotland but I've never been to Ireland) summer 2021 or Spring Break; if the stars align I could bring my getting-elderly mom. Cheers!"

In fact, it’s almost morbidly comical that one of the biggest challenges musicians have faced over the past few years is the declining sales of our primary revenue stream, CDs. More and more people are streaming music. That’s made touring all the more important. And now we have COVID-19. All of my big gigs through May are canceled. It’s the same with most musicians. There has never been a better time to ask for your help. Please support the musicians you enjoy. If you’re able to buy digital downloads, a CD, or merch or tip the artist online. Do so. If you’re not, we totally understand. So do something to promote the artist. Share their CD or Spotify page. Do something to spread the word. Share your love of them online and in your Facebook groups or other social groups. I confess I’ve never been more thankful that I have this podcast to help support my family. So I can only imagine how other Celtic musicians are faring. Please support them as you’re able. A HUGE thanks for your podcasts: it's always exciting waiting each Thursday! This week (just as the last and, probably, also the next one) I'm working from home, due to COVID19 emergency. Here in Italy very strict rules force us to stay home and go out only for severe necessities. Well, it's been a bit difficult to get used to but... hey! We are safe, alive, and we have our favourite music (Celtic one of course!) and your company! Even in this difficult times I thank the Lord and wait for better times... thanks to you, also, for your weekly gift. Attached you can find a pic of me working at my "new desk"... stay safe my friend!" Eric Mailler responded to a Celtic Music Magazine email: "Hi Marc, I downloaded the songs without any issues. Also wanted to say thank you for everything you do. I love listening to songs I’d never hear otherwise and learning more about Celtic culture through the song lyrics and letters your read. You asked who some of our favorite Celtic bands are. As far as well known bands go, the Young Dubliners and Gaelic Storm are up there for me. But, for local bands, the Rogue Diplomats are awesome. I usually try to catch them in Bethlehem, PA around St. Patrick’s Day. Anyway, thanks again, and Sláinte!" Steven Rausch emailed a photo: "Listening to the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast, made this traditional Guinness beef stew on St Patrick’s Day (and your birthday).  Slainte." Sean Morris emailed: "Hi, loving the podcast! You mentioned that listeners should submit music from female musicians/singers for future consideration. I'd like to draw your attention to banjoist Angela Usher from Manchester, England. Angela is a contemporary of musicians such as Mike McGoldrick, the Farrell's, Dezi Donnelly, Angelina Carberry, John Joe and Grace Kelly, etc who grew up learning and playing together in the 80's/90's in Manchester. She released her first album 'The Gort Mile' last year which has some lovely tunes and songs (some her own pieces). It's a measure of the regard she is held in that she had musicians such as Mike McGoldrick, Colin Farrell and John Carty collaborating with her on the Album. (I think Mike McGoldrick may have produced it) Angela is also involved with a cross community (Irish and Jewish) music project 'Amid the murk over the Irk' as a performer/composer/arranger. This is quite an interesting project which has brought gems such as this version of The Butterfly to us Angela also host several sessions in Manchester. Actually worth mentioning Grace Kelly here as well, former All Ireland whistle champion, sister of bodhran player Jon Joe Kelly who hosts another four sessions in Manchester. We have a strong female contingent of musicians here and it's not unknown for men to be in the minority at sessions here. Anyway, hope you enjoy Angela's album. Keep up the good work with the podcast."

Special thanks to our newest Patrons of the Podcast: Sean Mac Aodha, Kas, and our new Celtic Superstar, Hunter Melville. Years ago, a traditional Irish musician sat me down and told this autoharp-playing Renaissance festival musician what Celtic music really was. He gave me a list of popular trad musicians I should listen to. And I found some awesome bands in his list. That meeting was an important moment in my life. Because I did not see Celtic music the way he did. His definition narrowly defined traditional Irish music. For me, Celtic music is vast and growing. It encompasses the traditional songs and tunes as well as the contemporary arrangements that are more accessible to the average listener, like Celtic rock and even Celtic New Age. So when I started the Celtic Music Magazine and later the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. One of my goals was to share my definition of Celtic music as well as to help independent Celtic musicians. So this week I'm gonna share songs and tunes that I think will be a great intro to someone getting started with Celtic music. I picked some of my favorite bands and tunes. I got a little of input as well from my Patrons of the Podcast. Without my Patrons support this show would not have happened. So think about it, and then email me if you're interested. If I can get a couple dozen or so people interested, I will organize such an event. If you have a preferred day or time, please share that as well. * I WANT YOUR FEEDBACK: What are you doing today while listening to the podcast? You can send a written comment along with a picture of what you're doing while listening. Call 678-CELT-POD to leave a voicemail message. That's 678-235-8763. Nicole Theresa posted on Facebook: "Just wanted to drop a note - - I'm listening to past podcast episodes while I grade music finals (I work for a virtual school in California; I'm a high school music appreciation teacher). The wonderful music is making the painful student submissions a bit more bearable! Cheers!" Shira Gaudet posted on Facebook: "Thank you for your podcast! Yours is what I listen to when I need a mental break. Love the music. Stone Soup is my favorite episode so far! Still working through all of the old episodes." Kevin Long emailed: "I was so happy to find your podcast while searching for Celtic music on iTunes. Where has this been all my life? Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for this! I cannot begin to describe to you, the memories of my childhood that this podcast brings back. My Grand Father and Great Grand Father used to sit and play this very same music on the fiddle and guitar when I was young boy growing up in Sarasota Florida back in the late sixties and early seventies. Within the past two months, two events have drawn me ever closer to your broadcast. First, at my surprise birthday party to celebrate my 50th birthday, my amazing wife Vicky surprised me with a planned trip to Cork (my ancestral homeland)and Limerick for May. Second was the unfortunate passing of my beloved Grand Father James Russell Huff. He gave me many things in life, one of them is my love of music. My Mother found a recording of him and my Great Grand Father playing Celtic music recently and my family sat around and listened. This is when I knew that I was not only destined to find your podcast but, support it as well. Mark, I hope to happen upon you on the emerald isle one day and buy you a pint. #217: 10 Years of Great Irish & Celtic Music, a Retrospective

Irish and Celtic Music Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 23, 2015 199:06

On July 28, 2005, the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast was born from my love of Celtic music. I had been cultivating that love through my Celtic Music Magazine which featured album reviews and free Celtic MP3 downloads from many of the bands on this podcast. The podcast quickly overtook the magazine in popularity. I had three main goals when I created this show. First, to help indie Celtic bands find new fans. Second, to give Celtic music fans a free, easily downloadable show where they could enjoy the music of their cultural heritage. Third, I wanted a Celtic radio show that was focused on the music. What's that phrase: "Less talk, more music". But I wanted it to be true. So I have long sets and usually short breaks where I share news and feedback. There are a bunch of additional reasons, including a latent desire to be a DJ. I'll tell you more about it later. In the meantime, I want to share with you some of the best Celtic music featured in the podcast over the past ten years. Every month, I host the Celtic Top 20 where I ask you to vote for your favorite songs in each episode of the podcast. I've done this since almost the first year. That's how I created this show. It's the songs that fans of the podcast voted for over the last ten years. I just went in and cut down ten hours of music to a meer three hours. I hope you will celebrate your love of Celtic music with me and these amazing Celtic bands with music from The Tea Merchants, Heather Alexander, The McDades, Colleen Raney & Colm MacCarthaigh, Jamie Laval and Ashley Broder, Clandestine, Athas, Sligo Rags, Navan, Jimi McRae And Sam Okoo, Heather Dale, Hawp, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Round the House in the first hour. You'll hear The Elders, Mary Knickle, Kennedy’s Kitchen, Tara MacKenzie, Fiddler’s Green, Rising Gael, Rambling Sailors, Bow Triplets, Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer, Poitin, Ockham’s Razor, Gwilym Morus, LabGraal, The Selkie Girls in the second hour. Then we'll finish the show with Derek Warfield & The Young Wolfe Tones, Maidens IV, The Gothard Sisters, The Killdares, Tullamore, Marc Gunn, Across the Pond, Anne Roos, Holly Kirby, Molly Bauckham, Tallymoore, Samantha Gillogly & Tim Maurice, Stout Pounders, Rathkeltair, Black 47, The Rogues, Flashpoint. Can you believe that Southern liquor laws prevent the sale of alcohol on Sunday? Even after 30 years or so of living in the South, it still boggles my mind. I believe everyone should be able to buy or drink Irish whiskey on Sunday. This is not a political episode though. Just my two cents worth. Vote these laws down. Then start drinking some of the finest Irish music right now with awesome Celtic music from Chief O'Neill's Mixed Flock, Maggie Sansone, Rob Higginbotham, Stout Pounders, Breabach, Ron Cody, Marc Gunn, The Gothard Sisters, Jesse Ferguson, Whiskey Sunday, Finbar Furey, The Ne'er Duwels, The Rathmines, Rathkeltair, The Flying Toads. celticmusicpodcast.com/215 If you enjoy this show, then subscribe to our Celtic Music Magazine. Today's show is brought to you by Celtic Invasion Vacations If you are listening to this podcast then you probably dream of traveling to one of the Celtic nations. So I have one piece of advice. Do it! I'm not saying you should join me on one of my Celtic Invasion Vacations. I'm not saying you should join another tour group. But travel. Go. Right now. Mark Twain wrote: "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." Traveling will change your life for the better forever. Stop waiting for the "right moment". Start planning now. If you enjoy my music, then join me on a Celtic Invasion of another Celtic country. In 2016, we're going to Cornwall in search of Celtic culture, King Arthur and the Holy Grail. Will you join us? A new season of Celtic Christmas music begins with new episodes of the podcast featuring Celtic Christmas songs and tunes from The Rogues, Wicked Tinkers, Haggis Rampant, Bonnie Rideout, Angus Mohr, Rathkeltair. www.celticchristmaspodcast.com It is time once again to launch my Celtic Christmas Podcast. This is a 30 minute show where I play Celtic Christmas music and share a little bit about the Celtic bands on the show. If you have a Celtic band and want to submit music, visit our website, and I'll tell you more at the end of the show. If you have a Celtic podcast and would like to share your Christmas show with my audience, please contact me at celticpodcast@gmail.com My two-hour Best Bagpipe Music special of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast was so popular earlier this month, I thought a show of Bagpipe Celtic Christmas music would be a great way to kick off the holiday season.   This Week’s Celtic Christmas Music "Hellbound Sleigh" by The Rogues from Hellbound Sleigh Founded in Houston in 1994, The Rogues created a new genre of Celtic music with exceptionally, well-played pipes and driving percussion. The band's sound ranges from traditional pipes and drums to innovative textures incorporating whistles, keyboard and guitar, as well as many percussion instruments. Always present in The Rogues' music is that spirit that endears them to their audience. From technical precision to soaring melodies, a Rogues album and performance will move you to tears and get you dancing immediately afterwards. "Coventry Carol" by Wicked Tinkers from Slainte Happy Holidays Pioneers of the growing Tribal Celtic movement, the Wicked Tinkers have been playing haunting, heart-pounding bagpipes and irresistible tribal drums as a professional touring band since 1995. With the addition, of the mesmerizing drone of the Australian didgeridoo and Bronze Age Irish horn, the magic was complete. Sit back and be transported to an earlier time in Scotland and Ireland, when battle cries filled the air and strange, unheard-of creatures roamed the night. Or better yet, get on your feet and let your body move to ancient rhythms and forgotten sounds. "Kirkin' the Midwinter" by Haggis Rampant from The Silver Glens The first stirrings of Haggis Rampant appeared in the fall of 2000 at the first annual Louisiana Renaissance Festival. Steve was feeding his renfest habit while looking for places to practice on his loud instrument. His wife Pam played her bodhran with Steve on the last day of the 2000 run, and, much to his chagrin, the show was a hit. The group was completed with the addition of their daughter Gillian a few years later. Gillian has shown a talent for writing exquisite harmonies on the bagpipes and the good-natured father/daughter competitiveness makes them a fun team to watch. "Christmas Carousing/Ale Is Dear/New Christmas" by Bonnie Rideout from A Scottish Christmas Bonnie Rideout is an award winning Scottish fiddler. Her CD, "A Scottish Christmas" became a New York Times “Top Ten Holiday Best Seller”. She celebrates Christmas with this enthusiastic holiday performance that she takes on the road each year, playing at performing arts centers and large theaters nationwide in November and December. Rideout performs along with the Scottish Christmas Ensemble - a group of internationally renowned musicians including the City of Washington Pipe Band and dancers from the Scottish Highlands! Rideout and crew perform with spirit and gusto. This performance features Eric Rigler on Scottish smallpipes. "I Saw Three Ships" by Angus Mohr & Friends from A Christmas Pageant Just as watery mist remakes the world, and whisky remakes the man, Angus Mohr revitalizes the brogue of traditional Celtic music with an American blues accent and rejuvenates rock ’n roll’s broad spectrum with bagpipe and pennywhistles. No one is ever going to mistake Angus Mohr for a cover band. Sure, they play songs like “Foggy Dew,” the 1916 Easter Rising ballad, and “Whisky in the Jar,” a sixteenth century tale of love and betrayal, and their set list is peppered with songs penned by Dylan, Pink Floyd, Johnny Cash, and the Ramones. But you’ve never heard “Ring of Fire” or “I Wanna Be Sedated” until you’ve heard it with the pipes’ spiraling keen. The 2008 album from Angus Mohr is a departure from their usual sound! This Christmas album features an eclectic mix of styles, including everything from medieval carols to Chuck Berry! "Carols on 45" by Rathkeltair from Something Good for Christmas Rathkeltair blends compelling and catchy original songs with tight, driving straight-ahead rock-n-roll, while never forgetting its Celtic roots. Based in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, Rathkeltair has been on the road full-time since 2003. Highly regarded for its extraordinary energy, showmanship and professionalism, Rathkeltair enjoys a loyal and rapidly expanding community of friends and fans. In 2011, they released their album "Something Good for Christmas". It features over 45 minutes of Christmas classics , Original songs and tunes done Rathkeltair style for the holiday season! --- If you're in a Celtic band and you have recorded Christmas music, then please submit through at www.4Celts.com. Please complete all of the information, especially the band description. If you have a Celtic podcast, I would love to share your show with my listeners. Just email me at music@celticmusicpodcast.com. Include a link to download your Christmas shows. I will get them in our feed. My hope is to release three more exclusive episodes of this podcast, plus additional episodes by other Celtic shows. With any luck, you can expect a lot of great Celtic Christmas music and content in the weeks to come. Of course, if you enjoy this show, then please rate it on iTunes, Stitcher or your favorite podcatcher. And please share the show with your friends. One final note. This podcast is here to support the artists in the show. So if you enjoy the music you heard, please buy a CD, MP3s or show your support anyway you can for these artists. Have a Merry Christmas!
