Revisiting: Undoing the Urge to Overdrink

In this episode, Molly revisits a listener favorite: Undoing the Urge to Overdrink — a heartfelt and informative conversation first shared just before Thanksgiving 2023. Molly reflects on how emotional triggers, life events, and deeply rooted habits shape our relationship with alcohol — and how we can interrupt the cycle to create lasting change.Molly also shares a poignant personal moment, connecting the episode's theme with the anniversary of her father's passing on Thanksgiving night in 2022, making this revisited conversation especially meaningful. This episode coincides with the launch of Just One More, Molly's new two-week mini-course aimed at helping binge drinkers take the first powerful step toward a peaceful relationship with alcohol. (Sign-ups are open now! Check the link in the show notes.)Key Topics Covered:Defining Overdrinking and Binge Drinking: Molly clarifies what constitutes a binge for women (4+ standard drinks) and men (5+ standard drinks) — emphasizing why even gradual consumption across a day still counts as overdrinking.Impact of Overdrinking Beyond Intoxication: How even without reaching a "drunk" state, overdrinking disrupts sleep, elevates anxiety, taxes the liver, and triggers inflammatory responses.Holiday Drinking Traps: Common ways Thanksgiving and other holidays can lull us into overdrinking patterns — and why "spreading it out" doesn't negate its negative effects.Personal Reflections on Thanksgiving: Molly shares her experience navigating family-induced stress (especially dealing with her mother-in-law's anxiety) without turning to alcohol, highlighting the importance of mind management. The Cycle of Overdrinking: Breaking down the behavioral patterns and emotional triggers that drive overdrinking — and how building awareness interrupts the urge before it turns into action.Tools for Undoing the Urge: Molly emphasizes key strategies:Practicing mindfulness during urgesChoosing empathy over resentment in stressful family situationsReframing thoughts to shift emotional responsesFocusing on gratitude and emotional resilienceImportant Reminder: Changing your drinking habits isn't just about counting days — it's about understanding your brain, managing your mind, and creating a lifestyle of peace and intentionality.Featured Resource: Just One More A two-week mini-program designed to help binge drinkers interrupt old patterns and create a sustainable path toward mindful drinking.  Sign up here (link in the show notes)Connect with Molly:Website: www.mollywatts.comFacebook Group: Alcohol Minimalists: Change Your Alcohol HabitsLow risk drinking guidelines from the NIAAA:Healthy men under 65:No more than 4 drinks in one day and no more than 14 drinks per week.Healthy women (all ages) and healthy men 65 and older:No more than 3 drinks in one day and no more than 7 drinks per week. One drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor. So remember that a mixed drink or full glass of wine are probably more than one drink.Abstinence from alcoholAbstinence from alcohol is the best choice for people who take medication(s) that interact with alcohol, have health conditions that could be exacerbated by alcohol (e.g. liver disease), are pregnant or may become pregnant or have had a problem with alcohol or another substance in the past.Benefits of “low-risk” drinkingFollowing these guidelines reduces the risk of health problems such as cancer, liver disease, reduced immunity, ulcers, sleep problems, complications of existing conditions, and more. Welcome (or welcome back!) to the Alcohol Minimalist Podcast with your host, Molly Watts, coming to you from salubrious Oregon! In this final episode for Alcohol Awareness Month, Molly gets personal and shares the three major ways her drinking habits — and more importantly, her thinking about alcohol — have evolved over the years. This isn't just about counting drinks or cutting back to a “magical low number.” It's about creating peace with alcohol and living intentionally. Molly dives into how shifting from automatic drinking to intentional, mindful drinking has been the cornerstone of her transformation. She also introduces her brand-new mini-program, Just One More, designed to help you rewire the "binge brain" for vacations, weekends, and parties where overdrinking used to sneak in.If you're looking for inspiration and actionable strategies to rethink your relationship with alcohol, you won't want to miss this episode.Key Takeaways:Intentionality over Autopilot: Molly explains how she shifted from drinking mindlessly to making conscious, purposeful decisions about alcohol.Alcohol as an Option, Not a Solution: She no longer uses alcohol to solve problems or enhance experiences — vacations and celebrations are about the moments, not the drinks.Freedom Through Planning: Rather than feeling restrictive, planning her alcohol consumption ahead of time actually brings freedom and protects her long-term goals.New Program Launch! Get the inside scoop on the upcoming mini-program, Just One More, launching May 6th — perfect for anyone who struggles with binge drinking during "special occasions."Resources Mentioned:Just One MoreWebsite: www.mollywatts.comInstagram: @alcoholminimalistFacebook Group: Alcohol Minimalists: Change Your Alcohol HabitsLow risk drinking guidelines from the NIAAA:Healthy men under 65:No more than 4 drinks in one day and no more than 14 drinks per week.Healthy women (all ages) and healthy men 65 and older:No more than 3 drinks in one day and no more than 7 drinks per week. One drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor. Katie Slayton shares stories of memories that she has held onto for many years.  You won't want to miss this heartwarming episode. Here are some thoughts from Katie Slayton.I've always been puzzled by people who hate having a birthday.  Life's circumstances have taught me to cherish every year.  My grandmother lived to be thirty-six, but did not get the opportunity to see any of her five children as adults.  My mother lived to be thirty-eight.  She never saw me graduate from college.  She never met my husband, her grandchildren, or her great grandchildren. Both women were mothers briefly and never had a chance to be a grandmother.I am the first woman in three generations to hold both titles and I feel so fortunate. Don't you want to celebrate Just One More birthday?Support the show

How can you best help ALL of your students learn when they are all different?  They each have their own complex lives and life histories.  Listen to Kirsten Behling and Thomas Tobin talk about bringing the principles of Universal Design for Architecture to the learning environment to help manage this seemingly intractable problem.  Universal Design for Learning promises to reduce more barriers for more of your students providing opportunities for more of your students to succeed.  When adopting the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Behling and Tobin encourage faculty and staff to make one change at a time.  Plus One Thinking.  To start, use UDL principles to change just one aspect of your course or your learning environment at a time.  Don't try to overhaul the entire course at once.  The result is almost certain to be failure and frustration for you and your students.  Everyone will be unhappy, you will abandon UDL, and you will go back to your old ways reassured that everything was fine before.  Except of course that you were failing too many of your students.  Plus One Thinking reminds me of a good friend that plays the guitar.  How many guitars does he need?  Just One More!  Maybe that is the attitude to successful implementation of UDL principles.  Incremental.  Begin with just one change……….

These are the results of your voting. You can help these artists out by following the playlists and adding tracks you love to your playlists. Sign up through my link and you can support this podcast as well. Oh! And drop me an email if you'd like some hints on how to make a successful podcast. BUY SELCOUTH BY MARC GUNN My latest CD features Sci F'Irish music. That means it is original songs fusing pop culture themes with Irish drinking songs. There are some traditional music on the album. But mostly, it features songwriting by Marc Gunn with guests including: Screeched Inn, The Muckers, Jamie Haeuser, Sam Gillogly, Nathan Deese, and Mikey Mason. Selcouth means, “when everything is strange and different, yet you find it marvelous anyway.” The album is not completely Celtic and it's not just science fiction and fantasy. It's a fusion of the two. It's heartfelt and a lot of fun. It's now on sale in my Bandcamp store. Check out Selcouth now. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! Maire P.S Thanks so much for pronouncing Celtic correctly!" Charlene Adzima emailed: "Hey there Marc, I'm Charlene Adzima, fiddler and singer with Wisconsin - based all - female Irish music trio, The Lilies of the Midwest. As the pandemic seems to be waning, we've been reaching out to venues, festivals, radio shows, and podcasts to let folks know that we have an authentic, energetic, and charming stage presence and we'd like to get known outside of our small part of the Midwest. Our core instrumentation is fiddle, concertina, and mandolin, with the occasional guest guitarist or percussionist. With our Ohio - based guitarist Rick Nelson, we recorded a 6 track EP called Flora, which we'd like to offer you to play on your podcast. Thanks much and all the best! " Peter Bengtson emailed: "Hi Mark, I was walking yesterday and tried to get on SeriusXM.  Something was wrong and I couldn't get on. I got on your podcast  -  Episode 546 I think.  Once that episode was over, another episode started.  I listened to a total of 4 or 5 episodes.  This works great for me.  In the past, it seems that once the episode I listened to stopped, I had to go to start a new episode of Celtic Music or startup SeriusXM."

In 1970, Adriano Celentano - a successful Italian singer - wrote and recorded a song in gibberish. The incomparable Marianne Dissard has brought the song up to date by - well - we don't want to spoil it so you'll have to listen to the show to find out what she's done. Northplace Church Podcast

On November 10th, 2019, we had one united service in the Curtis Culwell Center that culminated the launch of our Unfinished Vision Initiative. We knew the day would be significant, and Pastor Bryan had a message burning in his heart, but I had no idea how one simple sermon illustration would become a battle cry that would shape the destiny of this church. For those of you who were there, it will be a shared experience we will never forget. In a world that is spiraling downward faster than we could ever imagine, the church is the lifeboat that rescues the perishing. Here’s the question we asked ourselves that day: Do we have enough lifeboats?Toward the end of the message, Pastor Bryan started calling people forward to get in small stationed lifeboats upfront in the arena. We crammed as many people as we could over the course of several minutes. His plea during that time was “Just One More!” Surely we can get “one more.” As people tried to press in anywhere, there was room, and it was apparent many would be left out.Somehow, at that moment, in that very powerful visual, God used a simple illustration to break our hearts for people far from God. Hardly a week has gone by since that day when someone hasn’t sent us a note or email with this statement: Just One More! You’re going to be seeing that phrase a lot over the next few months. FOR THE ONE. It’s the vision of this church. It’s the heartbeat of God. Just one more! It’s all about one more changed life! For the one, broken in your sin. For the one blinded by your addiction. For the one, imprisoned in your unbelief. For the one, that’s always searching and never finding. For the one that’s always traveling and never arriving. For the one that tried religion, and it failed them. For the one angered byinjustice. For the one that feels used up, wasted, overlooked, and forgotten. For the one, far from God. You are the reason God put Northplace Church here almost 100 years ago. You are the reason we are still here today. We exist: FOR THE ONE.

Are you ready to feel empowered, inspired, motivated?  Today’s guest is all about making you feel good, bringing you joy, and powering you with the strength and confidence you need to live your best life! From her popular fitness class, HIIT IT!, and her Power Hour networking events to her inspiring Instagram feed @Definedbydaphnie, and her podcast Just One More!, you are definitely going to love this conversation with fitness entrepreneur, innovator, and founder, Daphnie Yang. Daphnie turned her love of dance, passion for running, talent for performing and experience in personal training into a life and career she loves with the launch of her wildly popular fitness class, HIIT IT!, which burst onto the fitness scene in October 2013. What began as a group workout with a few clients in Central Park has grown into the ultimate high intensity interval training workout. On today’s episode we talk about how running transformed her life, where her journey with dance and fitness began, the narrative she created that almost prevented her from building her brand, having a positive mindset, and of course her sweat-drenching, fun-infused workout, HIIT IT! The one hour, 800 calorie burning workout she created that blasts body fat, torches calories, sculpts lean muscle mass, strengthens the core, skyrockets the metabolism and improves cardiovascular endurance. Empowered with a BFA in Dance from NYU in 2007, multiple International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) Certifications in Personal Training, Pre and Post Natal Training, Marathon Coaching and Nutrition Counseling, Daphnie has motivated hundreds of people to reduce body fat, sculpt lean muscle mass, and run marathons, but most importantly, she has helped countless people achieve balance and wellness in their day to day lives. HIIT IT! classes are taught at Athleta Flatiron and Primary in NYC. Daphnie currently trains clients six days a week at her gym space in downtown Manhattan or on-site at clients homes and corporate offices.  To learn more, head over to her website, www.daphnieyang.com or follow her on social @definedbydaphnie, @powerhournyc, @hiititnyc or @justonemorepod. In this standalone sermon, Pastor Nate preaches from Luke 14 which is a biblical example of our, "Just One More", mission statement. In the parable, Jesus illustrates that at any banquet, there will always be those with a reason not to attend. Although the will of God is that all should be saved, in this story, Jesus chooses to highlight the role of the servant. Once those invited declined, the master sent the servant out to seek out everyone he could, even those undesired by society, to come enjoy the banquet. In this we see ties to the Restoration Church mission; Jesus is for everyone.

Really loved listening to this instrumental show on my brisk lunchtime walk along the Red River in Winnipeg, Canada. In between tracks, you'd swear you could hear the ghosts of Scottish and Métis fiddles joining in." Nash from the UK emailed: "Hey Marc, Tried to confirm my subscription and although I am taken to the “thanks for subscribing” page, I still have not had the sign up email / zip for the albums. Waited a few hours, put your address in the contacts, but no joy yet. Maybe there are some leprechauns at work....? Nice podcast – just a suggestion. Could you put the tracklist / artist in the show notes? It’s great that you play a few songs back to back to not interrupt them, but by the time you then announce the artist / track name, I sometimes struggle to match them up." Hey Nash, thanks so much for writing. If you signed up to the email list and did NOT get an email back, I'd suggest you check your spam folder or trash. I don't know what those leprechauns are up to, but they can be troublesome with email. One more suggestion for everyone who is subscribed, reply to one of the magazine emails. That will hopefully insure that future emails go straight to your inbox and not to your gmail promotions or anything like that. As for the podcast suggestion, Nash, everything you mentioned is there. If you look at your podcatcher, you should be able to find all of the tracks and time listings for the artists in the show. If you can't find them there, please let me know. But you can also find them on our website at celticmusicpodcast.com Jim & Judy Wolfe emailed about the Flute/Whistle special idea: "Hey Marc, been listening for many years and one band I discovered on the podcast that fits the bill is Flook. Sarah Allen’s flute, and Brian Finnegan’s whistle are great examples for you to consider. Keep up the good work." A few episodes back, I suggested a flute/whistle episode might be in order. So I decided to set that up as our new Patreon Milestone. We are thirty dollars away from a 2-hour Celtic Flute & Whistle special. Chrissy Willow emailed: "Hey, Marc! I followed your podcasts years ago until Google Listen was retired and lost track of you. I'm so glad to see your podcasts on Google Play and have begun following again! The reason I write is because I'm trying to locate a song you played years ago. It was a ballad of a woman who walks the strand and calls up storms to dash the sailors' ships on the rocks. I've searched all over the place but can't find it, and can't remember enough of the lyrics to help. Thus, I'm hoping you might remember the song. Thank you so much for bringing such wonderful Irish music to my life. Have a lovely Saint Patrick's Day!"

Homesteady - Stories of homesteading farming hunting and fishing

SPOILER ALERT: If you haven't heard the prologue to this episode:Emergency on the Farm, Just One More, we highly suggest you stop and listen to this episode first. It's about an hour, and highly emotional, so don't forget those tissues! Thank you, listeners, for your support regarding the loss of Boone. We were, and continue to be, profoundly moved by your outpouring of empathy. Your stories of the beloved companion animals you have lost help heal the hole in our own heart. We are heartened by  how many of you told us that you have made changes on your own properties- reducing and eliminating your own use of poisons-in honor of Boone. This is why we shared Boone's story. You have shared these stories with the #forboone Hashtag. PLEASE, keep doing so. It makes his loss continue to have meaning for us and others. On the podcast, we share parts of several of your stories- of your much-loved pets, of the changes you've made on your properties. Our hearts are so grateful for this podcast community. As you may remember, I was able to get a spot put on the waiting list of Three Cedar's Retrievers list for JUST ONE MORE puppy sired by the same parents as Boone. How did this selection process go for us? Watch this video to find out. It will be the cutest thing you see all day. With the help of Jack's matchmaking skills, we selected "Socks" to come home with us to the farm.   Or maybe, "Socks" picked us. To be honest, it was hard to get a new puppy while still grieving Boone's loss. But we moved forward and started to build a spot in our family for our puppy. All purebred animals are registered, with a an official name. We re-named Socks "Bones" for his call name, a name that honored Boone. His official name? Three Cedars Boone's Little Brother. After earning the nickname Lazy Bones, for his marked lack of interest in any training activities, Bone matured into an eager retriever.   Which will it be? This one? Hmm... Seems to like us... Yep. That face. THAT face... Hansome pup Winston Churchill Bones. #forboone   More than that, he has filled the hole next to me, and has become my new best friend. She will be missed...(DIBS ON HER DDR MATS!) This show was our longest to date, editing it down from 64 minutes of audio goodness. So much good stuff was taken out we could have made TWO Fluff shows out of it! I suggest you listen carefully and keep an eye out for weevils, Norris, and soapy pasta. Musical Guest: Mad Caddies performing "Just One More" (via the Podsafe Music Network) and Deep Six performing "First Days of Summer" Tales of Wonder: * Roadside Attractions of the South-West: Hey Baby, Nice (straight) Ass (road)! * The Worst Cooks in the World * "Making Friends 101" Taught by Professor Ashley * CNN Ticker Guy's Last Day on the Job * Most Memorable Lines Taken Out of Context: * "There's a Margarita Festival that I saw on TV one time where they make this gigantic enchiladas...I mean Margarita." * "You know those black spots in the potatoes...that's not pepper.
