This episode we talk with the ethereal Bailey Bigger about her new album "Resurrection Fern" and how she has grown and changed since her last album was released.   Resurrection Fern explores vulnerability, nature, and growth, all delivered through Bigger's distinctive lens. Known for her enchanting melodies and impeccable lyricism, Bigger dives deep into themes of renewal, fragility, and the resilience found in the human spirit. Each track feels like a conversation with an old friend, guiding listeners through moments of self-discovery and connection. As a storyteller, she paints pictures that are as vivid as they are introspective, drawing on personal experiences and weaving them into universal truths. Her poetic approach to music, combined with a rich vocal presence, marks her as one of the most exciting new voices in today's music landscape. With this release, Bigger continues to prove why she's being hailed as a fresh voice for her generation. Her ability to channel complex emotions into beautifully simple yet profound songs sets her apart, and Resurrection Fern is a testament to her growth as an artist and storyteller.  The 24 year old singer/songwriter/instrumentalist has collected back to back nominations at the Arkansas Country Music Awards, been named Songwriter of the Year in Memphis, won Audience-Favorite music video at Indie Film Fest, and has had multiple songs featured on TrueSouth on SEC Television. Bigger has traveled the country over the last four years, enchanting audiences with her siren song and classic American songwriting. She has shared stages and festival lineups with Sierra Ferrell, The Local Honeys, The Avett Brothers, and toured alongside Joe Purdy and Trampled by Turtles. Bailey's voice has graced the stages of Red Rocks Amphitheater, The Bluebird Cafe, Georgia Theater, and many festivals including FloydFest, Americanafest, and Memphis in May. Much inspired by her own Celtic heritage, folklore of the world surrounding her, and connection to the natural world, Bailey's new record, “Resurrection Fern,” (releasing October 25th) takes the listener on a journey through the four seasons, and the cycles of death that we, and the earth, face every year. Leaning into the mystery and lore of the unknown, human emotions, and the wild nature within all of us, “Resurrection Fern,” captures the magic that Bailey found within her years of tuning in deeper with the natural cycles, and the primal knowledge within.  Check her out here:  Website: Baileybigger.com Facebook: Bailey Bigger Music Instagram: Bailey Bigger TikTok: @coyotecreature

Playwright Garry Michael Kluger stopped by to sit in the Playwright's Spotlight to talk about all things playwriting and also touched on its from film and television. Having been a three-time semi-finalist, we discuss the process of and when to submit for the O'neill's and whether it's ever okay to pay to submit your work. We also touch on how playwrights one has never met can serve as a mentor, conversation being spontaneous while dialogue being scripted, and how one's characters dictate the verbiage as well as the difference between humor and comedy, learning how to say no, dusting off old and incomplete work, writers having the final word, creating layered characters, the misconceptions of playwriting, and the process of editing. We unpack so much more that I can't list them all. Garry offers so much insight that I walked away with so much information. I hope you find the same for you. Garry Michael Kluger has written 19 plays, 3 books, 2 TV pilots, several television series, and 12 documentaries and was a writing member of Theatre West; one of Los Angeles' most prestigious theatre companies. Three of his plays have been semi-finalists for the prestigious O'Neill Playwright's Conference. His play The Other Half, was a part of the 2014 Pittsburgh New Works Festival and WestFest at Theatre West in Los Angeles, and Top Ten at the Sterts Playwrights Festival in London. The Homecoming, was a finalist in the Warner International Playwrights Festival, the West Hollywood Gay and Lesbian Play Reading Festival, and winner of the Chaos Theory Play Festival in 2011. In 2010 his play Brotherhood won “The Audience Favorite” as a part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival at the Tre Stage. Whether she's covered in cheesecake or getting paddled on stage, this performer loves blurring the lines between provocative and obscene, between dancer and audience. In this episode, we're speak with two Israeli activists and refuseniks Amitai Ben- Abba (@amitaibenabba) and Atalya Ben-Abba about the current uprising happening against the Netanyahu government and the movement refusing service in the Israeli army in protest of the occupation. The anti-Netanyahu movement, or the “Balfour struggle,” as it's known in Israel, has been out in the streets across the country and in front of “Crime Minister” Benjamin Netanyahu's homes for months. The Israeli left has not only begun to see large numbers of people joining them and increased police violence against protestors, but also a convergence of anti-austerity movements, the anti-occupation movement and people fed up with the government's corruption and bungling of the COVID-19 crisis. We also talk with Atalya and Amitai about the film “Objector” (@objectorfilm) which documents Atalya's decision to refuse service in the Israeli army, the “refusenik” movement of young Israelis resisting military service and their family's transformation as a result. Atalya Ben-Abba is an Israeli conscientious objector who sat in prison for 110 days in 2017 for refusing to serve in the Israeli army. After volunteering to do civil service for two years at a shelter for homeless youth, she now studies Sociology, Anthropology, and Philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and continues to be active in various activist groups in Israel/Palestine. Amitai Ben-Abba is a writer, filmmaker, and activist now based in Oakland, CA. Amitai is the writer and producer of the full-length documentary Objector about Atalya's refusal and their family's transformation as a result of her decision. Amitai's poetry, fiction, and essays received awards and appeared in publications such as CounterPunch, Haaretz, The Independent, and Witness Magazine. Amitai holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Mills College, where they attended as a Fellow in Writing and Community Engagement. Objector (@ObjectorFilm) premiered at IDFA in 2019 (where it was a Top 5 Audience Favorite) and won awards at major film festivals, including Best International Documentary at the Hot Springs Festival and Best Interfaith Film at St. Louis International Film Festival. Really Cool History: https://www.history.com/topics/valentines-day/valentines-day-facts - TimeStamp: 00:19:40a. Origins to a Bloody Pagan Festival: Some trace Valentine’s Day origins to a Christian effort to replace a pagan fertility festival that has been dated as far back as the 6th century B.C. During the festival of Lupercalia, Roman priests would sacrifice goats and dogs and use their blood-soaked hides to slap women on the streets, as a fertility blessing. According to legend, women would later put their names in an urn and be selected to be paired with a man for a year. - TimeStamp: 00:19:55b. Every year, thousands of romantics send letters addressed to Verona, Italy to “Juliet,” the subject of the timeless romantic tragedy, “Romeo and Juliet.” The city marks the location of the Shakespearean tale, and the letters that reach the city are dutifully answered by a team of volunteers from the Juliet Club. Each year, on Valentine's Day, the club awards the "Cara Giulietta" ("Dear Juliet") prize to the author of the most touching love letter. - TimeStamp: 00:22:52c. Box of Chocolates: The Valentine’s Day tradition of giving a box of candy was started in the 19th century by Richard Cadbury, a scion of a British chocolate manufacturing family. With a new technique recently established at the company to create more varieties of chocolate, Cadbury pounced on the opportunity to sell the chocolates as part of the beloved holiday. - TimeStamp: 00:23:50d. First Valentine Was Written From a Prison: History’s first valentine was written in perhaps one of the most unromantic places conceivable: a prison. Charles, Duke of Orleans wrote the love letter to his second wife at the age of 21 while captured at the Battle of Agincourt. As a prisoner for more than 20 years, he would never see his valentine’s reaction to the poem he penned to her in the early 15th century. - TimeStamp: 00:24:20e. ‘Wearing Your Heart on Your Sleeve’: The term “wearing your heart on your sleeve” may have origins in picking a valentine. Smithsonian reports that during the Middle Ages, men would draw the names of women who they would be coupled with for the upcoming year while attending a Roman festival honoring Juno. After choosing, the men wore the names on their sleeves to show their bond during the festivities. - TimeStamp: 00:25:45f. ‘Sweethearts’ Candies Started Out as Lozenges The iconic chalky heart-shaped candies that have been passed out lovingly every Valentine’s Day started out as lozenges. According to the Food Business News, pharmacist and inventor Oliver Chase created a machine that would quickly create the lozenges before switching to using the machine to create candy—later known as Necco Wafers. Chase’s brother came up with the idea to print messages on the candy in 1866, and the candies got their heart shape in 1901, appealing specifically to Valentine’s Day sweethearts. In 2019, the Sweetheart brand of conversation hearts was suspended for a year as the candy’s new owner, Spangler Candy Co., needed time to make a supply of the hearts for Valentine’s. - TimeStamp: 00:26:53g. Cupid Began as a Greek God: The chubby baby with wings and a bow and arrow that we call Cupid has been associated with Valentine’s Day for centuries. However, before he was renamed Cupid, he was known to the ancient Greeks as Eros, the god of love. Eros, the son of Greek goddess Aphrodite, would use two sets of arrows—one for love and another for hate—to play with the emotions of his targets. It wasn’t until stories of his mischief were told by Romans that he adopted the childlike appearance that we recognize today.i. Bethel refers to God with Eros love… GROSS - TimeStamp: 00:28:48h. How ‘X’ Came to Mean ‘Kiss’: The idea of using a kiss to sign off on valentines also has a long history, according to the Washington Post. The use of “X” came to represent Christianity, or the cross, in the Middle Ages. During the same time, the symbol was used to sign off on documents. After marking with an X, the writer would often kiss the mark as a sign of their oath. As the gesture grew among kings and commoners to certify books, letters and paperwork, these records were described as having been “sealed with a kiss.” - TimeStamp: 00:30:178. Saint Valentine- it’s a hot mess and is no longer considered a saint in 1969. - TimeStamp: 00:32:09a. Stories aren’t consistentb. St. Valentine refused to renounce his faith and Christianity and was executed outside the Flaminian Gate on February 14, 269. However, other tales of St. Valentine's life claim he was executed either in the year 269, 270, 273 or 280. Other depictions of St. Valentine's arrests tell that he secretly married couples so husbands wouldn't have to go to war. Another variation of the legend of St. Valentine says he refused to sacrifice to pagan gods, was imprisoned and while imprisoned he healed the jailer's blind daughter. On the day of his execution, he left the girl a note signed, "Your Valentine."c. ExCatholic4Christ.wordpress.com9. Being Single On Valentines Day - TimeStamp: 00:33:55a. 1 Peter 5:10i. A great article by John MacArthur called “True Love” - TimeStamp: 00:36:33a. https://www.ligonier.org/learn/articles/true-love/b. Most of the talk about love these days ignores this principle. “Love” has been redefined as a broad tolerance that overlooks sin and embraces good and evil alike. That’s not love; it’s apathy. God’s love is not at all like that. Remember, the supreme manifestation of God’s love is the Cross, where Christ “loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God” (v. 2). Thus Scripture explains the love of God in terms of sacrifice, atonement for sin, and propitiation: “In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 John 4:10). In other words Christ made Himself a sacrifice to turn away the wrath of an offended deity. Far from dismissing our sins with a benign tolerance, God gave His Son as an offering for sin, to satisfy His own wrath and justice in the salvation of sinners. That is the very heart of the Gospel. God manifests His love in a way that upheld His holiness, justice, and righteousness without compromise. True love “does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth” (1 Cor. 13:6). That’s the kind of love we are called to walk in. It’s a love that is first pure, then peaceable.11. Lauren and Becca share how they celebrate Valentine’s Day - TimeStamp: 00:41:5512. Can you see 8020? The Pareto principle (also known as the 80/20 rule, states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes.  I’m sure we have all heard the phrase, 80% of the work is done by 20% of the members, and as it turns out, it’s usually true.  That doesn’t [...] The post A Podcast Audience Favorite — Can you see 80/20? If you're starting out in business, or you're at an early stage of development, an incubator will help you with your business plan, your strategy for growth, and other guidance. They may even introduce you to investors. But, like being admitted to a good college, getting accepted into an incubator can be competitive. And, despite the best of intentions, the outcome of that competition is not always without bias, or solely merit-based. That's why, in 2009, an incubator and business accelerator calling itself Propeller started up here in New Orleans. Propeller is designed to help small businesses and non-profits in the areas of community economic development, food, water, health, and education. These areas, they say, have both "significant inequities, and proven market opportunities for local entrepreneurs to implement solutions." Andrea Chen is Executive Director of Propeller. On this edition of Out to Lunch, Andrea introduces two winners of the 2019 Propeller business pitch competition, Pitch NOLA. Jon Renthrope is CEO and Brewmaster at Cajun Fire Brewing. Cajun Fire Brewing is one of 6,500 craft beer breweries in the US. Of those 6,500 breweries, only seven, or 0.1%, have African American ownership. Cajun Fire Brewing is one of that very small number. Arien Hall is co-founder and co-owner of Mastodonte - a stormwater management company and a construction company. They design and install French drains, ponds, rain gardens, water features, rain barrels, and water retention systems. Mastodontoe won two awards at Propeller's 2019 Pitch NOLA competition. They won in the Water Challenge division - for businesses involving water management - and they also won the Audience Favorite award. Photos over lunch at Commander's Palace by Jill Lafleur. A.J. Ali is the Director and Producer of WALKING WHILE BLACK: L.O.V.E. Is The Answer, an award-winning feature-length documentary film improving relations between police and people of color. He coined the acronym L.O.V.E. which stands for: Learn about your community Open your heart to the people in it Volunteer yourself to be part of the solution in their lives and Empower others to do the same. The film won Best Documentary and Audience Favorite at the Garifuna International Film Festival in Los Angeles, California and A.J. was awarded the Platinum Award by the NAACP in Howard County, MD for Contributions to the Community Through the Arts & Entertainment. A.J. is also the Creator, Producer and Host of Wellness 101, a TV game show based in Santa Monica, California. His first film, “Positive Choice,” is credited with saving the national youth soccer program “Soccer in the Streets” from extinction. He was the Creator, Producer and Star of “Good Fellas of Baltimore,” which aired on Fox 45 TV in the Baltimore market. He has produced, written and/or appeared in numerous TV shows, films, commercials and PSA’s. He's a 2019 BMe Vanguard Social Determinants Of Health Fellow, a member of L.A. County District Attorney Jackie Lacey’s Community Justice Panel and an active member of ACTS Church in Santa Monica, California. He is a service-disabled veteran who served honorably in the United States Air Force from 1983 to 1987 as a Journalist and Media Relations Specialist. After experiencing racial profiling by several law enforcement officers in Howard County, MD, A.J. made it his mission to bring awareness and reconciliation between law enforcement and people of color. In addition to directing and producing the film, WALKING WHILE BLACK: L.O.V.E. Is The Answer, A.J. and his team facilitate L.O.V.E. Is The Answer workshops across the country, and have named September 17, 2019 as the Inaugural National Day Of Reconciliation in the U.S.A. In his conversation with us, A.J. sheds light on the everyday issues facing the black community and what we can do to bring an end to the racial profiling and stereotypes that have caused so much tragedy and division in this country. A.J. demonstrates that L.O.V.E. is truly the answer and invites us into the possibility of healing and reconciliation, one community at a time. Key Takeaways If you’re white in America, you can choose whether to engage on matters of race. You don’t have to have ‘the talk’ with your kids about how to engage police officers. If you’re black in America, the issue of race comes up every single day. We have to be literate in another language almost – the language of race. Whenever there is a divide between people, love is always the answer. Reconciliation takes time but it is possible. As a nation we need more civility – where we allow people to mess up, and we are there to help them up and show them a different way. Watch the film. The guys welcome Edreace Purmul to discuss Quentin Tarantino's problem with Hollywood's Cinerama Domeallegedly backing out of its agreement to show his movie in lieu of Star Wars. Edreace Purmul graduated from San Diego State University’s Film and Business school in 2006. His first debut into the cinema limelight incidentally was also his first film attempt post-graduation. His micro-budget feature film MOZLYM received immediate international acclaim and interest for its controversial and socially conscious appeal. MOZLYM received a Nomination for Best Picture in 2008 at the Cairo International Film Festival and won the Audience Favorite award at Riverside International Film Festival. It also was selected for official competition at International Film Festival Thailand, South Africa Film Festival, and British Film Festival of Los Angeles, where Purmul received multiple nominations for Best First Time Director. Check out Edreace'slatest film here! Full Podcast Transcript NASIR: Welcome to our podcast where we cover business in the news and add our legal twist. My name is Nasir Pasha and this time we’re joined with a Star Wars expert, Matt Staub, right? MATT: You know, you’ve said many different things for me. This was probably the one that’s farthest from the truth. NASIR: Yeah. MATT: I’m trying to think of some of the other ones you’ve said for me in the past like make-up expert. I think mine might be closer to that than Star Wars expert, unfortunately. So, I don’t know how much I’ll be able to offer on this but we’ll see what happens. NASIR: No. In fact, I’m pretty sure we talked last week about covering this episode and you’ve only seen the old ones which is forgivable because the new ones aren’t as good and we can kind of get into that discussion but it seems like you weren’t too familiar with it so I went ahead and got my own expert – since I knew you’d be lacking – my good friend, Edreace Purmul. He’s an independent filmmaker in San Diego. Edreace, are you there? EDREACE: Yes, I am! NASIR: Nice. Welcome to the podcast. EDREACE: Thank you guys for having me. NASIR: No problem. So, Edreace, Star Wars… This new film, is it going to be good, bad, or to be determined? EDREACE: Star Wars is kind of one of those unique – I guess you could say – sagas or series that the properties that it carries in terms of fan base and how it’s made and who’s behind it is very different than something that’s a little bit more consecutive because it’s spread out over the span of, you know, we’re talking 1976, it had its own fan base. George Lucas had his own – you know, he has his take on what he wanted to do with it and, really, the first Star Wars was not really called Episode IV. That’s not how it started. He actually just created the idea and didn’t really think about if this thing became a sequel. And so, after it kind of struck gold, then he started to kind of look at it and say, “Okay, let’s map it out.” But then, thirty years later, there’s a reboot and there’s another trilogy that’s part of the same clause, I guess, but you have completely different takes on it and you have a lot of jaded Star Wars fans who are like, “This is not the Star Wars I remember.” It got to a point where, you know, one of the reasons why Lucas even claims he left and basically sold it to Disney was he kind of lost control over what he thought was his own creative vision because the world had kind of owned it at this point and they were telling him, “You should have done this and you should have done that.” I think him kind of surrendering the reins to J.J. Abrams and Disney, it’s probably just going to feel different, in my opinion. I know J.J. Abrams, one of his goals was to try to really make it feel like the Star Wars that inspired him when he was young. I think he saw Star Wars when he was like eleven or something. And so, there’s a little bit of hope I guess for some of the older Star Wars fans ...

The Private Advice of Harry Connick, Jr. Chandler Canterbury is a child actor with a dazzling future. Immediately following the world premiere of When Angels Sing, a not-yet-released movie young Canterbury made with Willie Nelson, Connie Britton, Lyle Lovett, Fionnula Flanagan, Kris Kristofferson and Harry Connick, Jr., Harry grabbed a microphone and told a funny story about his first encounter with Chandler. (I've posted my iPhone video of that moment in http://mondaymemo.wpengine.com/rabbithole (the rabbit hole) for you.) But Harry C. Jr. told an even better story privately. “Chandler and I were hanging out between scenes,” Harry said, “when he looked at me and said, ‘What's the secret of being popular? How do you get people to like you?'” An interesting question, don't you think? Most of us would have responded by saying “Just be yourself,” or “Popularity is overrated,” or some other such claptrap. But Harry believes in answering questions as asked. So the astoundingly popular actor and musician looked young Chandler in the eyes and said, “The secret of being liked is to always ask 5 questions before you say anything about yourself. People won't remember what you said about yourself, but they'll always remember what you asked about them.” Harry then let Chandler practice asking him different kinds of ice-breaking questions until the young man finally mastered the art. It kind of makes you wish Harry Connick, Jr. had taken you under his wing when you were a kid, doesn't it? The bigger story, though, is the movie itself. Turk Pipkin wrote When Angels Sing as a story to be read to his friends and family each Christmas. Year after year, Turk would pull those sheaves of dog-eared paper out of a shoebox and read the story to a roomful of friends who would faithfully gather to hear it. And each Christmas, the crowd got bigger. One year, Fred Miller was in the room. Among his other accomplishments, Fred was executive producer of For All Mankind, that miraculous film documenting the Apollo space missions from 1968 to 1972. When released in 1989, For All Mankind was selected as the Audience Favorite and the Grand Jury Winner at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award. That same Fred Miller jumped up and said, “This story needs to be made into a movie.” Then Elizabeth Avellan – producer of 30 movies including the Spy Kids franchise – got on board. Following Elizabeth was Shannon McIntosh, executive in charge of post-production for Quentin Tarantino's Oscar-winning Inglourious Basterds (2009) and executive producer of this year's Oscar-winning Django Unchained (2012.) And now you want to invite Fred Miller to your Christmas party, right? When Willie and Harry and Connie and Lyle and Fionnula and Kris heard about the project and read the screenplay, each of them volunteered to make the film for a teeny-tiny fraction of the prices they typically command. Each of them knew in their heart this film was a magical Christmas card that would cause tens of millions of people to have happier holidays for decades to come. And each of them wanted to be part of a movie that said, “Merry Christmas. You are loved.” Hollywood desperately wants to gain control of this film but the actors and producers aren't sure they want Hollywood to have it. During a laughter-filled afternoon on the campus of Wizard Academy a few days ago, the general feeling of the producers was to possibly try and repay the $17,000,000 it cost to make this movie by crowdfunding through Kickstarter. I'm not sure whether the Kickstarter thing will happen, but I can definitely tell you that everyone who was involved in the making of When Angels Sing looks at this not-yet-released movie the same way old hippies look at Woodstock, “I was there. I was part of...
