Frank Herbert's landmark science fiction novel has become more culturally central thanks to the recent blockbuster films by Denis Villeneuve adapting the story. But as we make our way through our series on the late David Lynch, we had to stop by Arrakis and grapple with his much-maligned adaptation from 1984. Featuring a massive budget (which came with lots of production demands as well), a star-studded cast, and classic 1980s sets and effects, Dune did everything it could to capture an epic space-opera vibe.We discuss how successful or not it was alongside friend of the show Julie Ahern and new friend of the show Nicole Amato. This is a hearty, fun, thoughtful conversation that also wrestles with Dune's unique themes subverting our prominent concepts of destiny and heroism. We enjoyed tremendously discussing this film and we hope you enjoy it as well!3:32 - Getting to know Nicole Amato19:10 - DUNE (1984)See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In this episode we try our damnedest to avoid the golden path. But no matter how much emo teenage pouting we do it still all ends up in genocide and our kid turning into an immortal homicidal worm. That's right, it's Frank Herbert's seminal epic Dune. We will once again look for Satan in Science Fiction through the lens of the Christ Myth. The idea of a chosen one, a demi god, not exactly god but more than human with supernatural powers coming to rescue us all from evil. Then it's Tom Hiddleston in a J. G. Ballard adaptation of madness, destruction, and paint in High-Rise, directed by Ben Wheatley from 2015. Next, Emily Blunt has to do some very unethical things in order to bring a drug cartel down, with the help of Benecio del Toro and Josh Brolin in Sicario, directed by Denis Villeneuve, from 2015. And then we get into The Russo Brothers' The Electric State from 2025. Is it as bad as people say it is? Can Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt salvage this movie, or is this one for the scrap heap? All of this plus the shocking absence of comedy specials and reality shows and the return of Black Mirror and You. got a suggestion for the show?: whatsnewtonetflix@gmail.com

This week Jim dips into Flesh for Frankenstein, Darren watches Death of a Unicorn while Lee enthuses over his newly night purchased Commodore 64... What follows is some nostalga bait and then some intense peer pressure for Darren as we try to make him spend money on a zx spectrum. Producer Dan Levine recalls the making of 2016's iconic Arrival. From the moment he read Ted Chiang's Story of Your Life, Dan knew he had to find a way to bring it to the screen. Director Denis Villeneuve, an incredible talent but still relatively unknown, was the perfect choice. Producers had to wait until Denis wrapped Sicario, but things moved quickly once Amy Adams came on board and suggested Jeremy Renner as her co-star. Production went smoothly, although the material presented endless challenges for Denis and the producers. The scariest moment was after the finished film was screened for the studio - they did not like it and wanted rewrites and a reshoot to change the ending. Dan knew the film worked and fought for the ending that garnered 8 Oscar nominations. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Now that Adrien Brody has finally wrapped up his acceptance speech, we can bring you Episode 59 of Vintage Sand. And since it's March, and the Oscars just passed, we're right on time with our annual year-end review, which we call 2024: The Year of the Brutal. As seems to be the case over the last few years, we came away from the year in film with mixed feelings. The interesting thing is that we did not seem to agree on any of the major films of the year. Mike and I liked "Anora" a lot, and John did not. We also both liked "Emilia Pérez", which John actively disliked. John and I liked Garland's "Civil War", which Mike didn't like at all. John liked "The Brutalist", and Mike and I were underwhelmed. I was alone in loving both "Nosferatu" and "The Substance". Mike and John liked "Conclave" and "A Complete Unknown", both of which I found kind of conventional despite outstanding performances. And so on. It makes it difficult to come to a consensus on the year, but it makes, as you will hear, for an excellent episode; after all, what could be more boring than when the three of us agree? As for the Oscars themselves, we were pleasantly surprised at how good Conan was, and pleasantly not surprised how good the opening number from "Wicked" was. We were relieved at the absence of Malala vs. Cocaine Bear audience schtick (minus Adam Sandler), surprised at the politics-free nature of the evening, appalled at the James Bond “tribute”, amazed at how young Mick Jagger looks, and, as ever, disappointed in the In Memoriam section. And while we appreciated the Gene Hackman and Quincy Jones tributes, we were shocked that nothing special was done for David Lynch (something we plan to remedy in our next episode). Good on Sean Baker for winning four statuettes for "Anora", yet continuing puzzlement as to why Denis Villeneuve, among the greatest world-builders currently directing, can't seem to get nominated for films that all seem to get nominated for Best Picture. In considering our eternal question of which of these films will be watched by anyone in 25 years, let alone show up the Sight and Sound poll in 2032, I can only imagine that "Anora" and "Nosferatu", in the contexts of their respective directors' careers, might make the cut. It seems slightly possible that the Dylan film, "Conclave" and "The Brutalist" might have some legs as well, but it's less likely. For me, 2024 will always stand out as the year featuring women in films that were social commentaries in the context of the horror genre ("The Substance", "Maxxxine", and "Blink Twice" being among the best examples). It suggests that a kind of brutality, often directed at women though not exclusively, has crept into American film, as it seems to have done in American life itself. So we urge you, intrepid listeners, to support the arts and humanities, go to movies in theaters, and keep fighting the good fight.

On this episode of Unsupervised Learning, Razib talks to Titus Techera, a Romanian living in Budapest, but commenting extensively on American and European culture. He is the Executive Director of the American Cinema Foundation, International Coordinator of the National Conservatism Conference and is a primary contributor to the Substack PostModernConservative. Techera also hosts a podcast for the American Cinema Foundation. Razib first talks to Techera about the 2024 Romanian presidential election that was overturned by the courts over accusations of Russian interference. Techera explains the social and cultural context of the candidate initially declared victorious against a backdrop of Romanian society's typical stock characters. Techera also discusses the tension between having a nation-state with a distinctive character and becoming part of the broader EU project that is attempting to forge unity across 27 countries. He then addresses what a “Postmodern Conservative” is in the context of the arts. Perhaps most importantly, PostModern Conservatives take the 20th century and the modernist period seriously; they are not simply reactionaries who want to return to the 19th century. Conservatives who value the arts and culture cannot simply roll the tape back; they have to engage with what has come before. Razib and Techera also consider how inferences from the sciences, like the rejection of the “blank slate,” might influence the arts. They also discuss their disagreements about the latest Dune films, Techera prefers David Lynch's attempt to adapt the book in 1984 to Denis Villeneuve's 2021 version.
On the sixty-sixth episode of The Cinematic Odyssey, Tristen and Max run through all categories for the 97th Academy Awards with their picks and predictions for how the night might go. The episode includes a heated debate about the use of AI in film, a shoutout to longtime Cinematic Odyssey listener Bowen Yang, and the most predictable Best Picture choice coming from the both of them. They also discuss snubs, techno, and Denis Villeneuve, in a semi-thorough awards preparation.

This week, Jason and Brian dive into the chaos surrounding Elon Musk's growing influence in government tech, with young engineers playing key roles in his takeover. DOGE employees are being ordered off Slack, USAID is crumbling, and Musk's war with U.S. officials rages on. Meanwhile, AI takes center stage with the EU banning high-risk systems, DeepSeek's security concerns, and Amazon throwing down $100 billion on AI advancements. Big Tech moves are equally absurd—Google is now open to AI-powered weapons, Meta might scrap risky AI models, and Tesla is struggling in Europe thanks to Elon's latest blunders. Meanwhile, states are rushing to pour taxpayer money into so-called “strategic cryptocurrency reserves.”In entertainment, The Devil May Cry anime's ridiculous theme song is a standout, Mythic Quest returns, and Beast Games looks promising. AI controversially helped The Beatles score a Grammy, and Denis Villeneuve is making Dune 3 because, well, fans demanded it. Over in reboot land, Sarah Michelle Gellar may return for a Buffy revival on Hulu with Chloé Zhao at the helm, while Neil Gaiman finds himself in serious legal trouble. Gadget fans get a look at the Anker Zolo charger, a Google search trick to dodge AI summaries, and Apple's latest social feature. Also, say goodbye to Apple's AR glasses before they even had a chance to shine.Dave Bittner joins The Dark Side segment with updates on cybersecurity, including a wave of ransomware payment refusals and the Andersons' infamous eviction from Disneyland's most exclusive club. Dune: Prophecy, the six-episode prequel series to the Dune films, now streaming on Max, delves into the origins of the Bene Gesserit. The series is set 10,000 years before the events of the movies. Bringing this ancient future to life was just one of the challenges faced by cinematographer Pierre Gill, CSC, a veteran of science fiction and period pieces alike. Pierre, who has a deep affinity for the sci-fi genre, sees it as a close cousin to historical dramas. “It's like another type of period piece,” he explains, citing the importance of costumes, lighting, and set design in creating an immersive world. His experience in science fiction is extensive, having served as additional and second unit cinematographer on Denis Villeneuve's Dune, Arrival, and Blade Runner 2049. This prior experience proved invaluable for Dune: Prophecy. “On Dune: Prophecy, the challenge is there's not really a lot of light source in the concept of the universe,” Pierre notes. The goal was to respect the established aesthetic of Villeneuve's Dune, avoiding an overabundance of typical sci-fi lighting. During his initial interview for the series, Pierre emphasized his understanding of the Dune look, a perspective informed by his work on the first film. He felt the series should align with the films, potentially even enhancing viewers' appreciation of the cinematic universe. However, Pierre was also determined to bring his own artistic vision to the project. “At the same time,” he admits, “it's difficult because as a cinematographer, I don't want to recreate what Greig Fraser, the master, did. I don't want to copy him.” Pierre's approach for Prophecy involved strong, wide shots with splashes of bold color. After extensive lens and camera testing, Pierre chose to shoot with the Arri Alexa 35. He also used two Steadicams to maximize efficiency during the action-packed shoot. Pierre favored a centered camera, even in close-ups, and faced the significant hurdle of lighting the massive sets. Time constraints limited pre-lighting opportunities, forcing Pierre to find innovative solutions. He employed mobile softboxes and book lighting to sculpt the actors' faces, creating soft bounce light. The presence of ceilings on some of the sets allowed for lower camera angles and the inclusion of more background detail. He was also able to use many practical lighting sources throughout the set. Dune: Prophecy has been picked up for a second season and Pierre is excited to explore the Dune universe further. “Season 2 will be even more powerful, I think,” he predicts. Denis Villeneuve's massive sci-fi epic “Dune: Part Two” is up for best picture at the Oscars this year. Last year, around the film's Canadian premiere, the Quebecois filmmaker joined Tom Power to discuss his vision for the second installment, the challenges of shooting in the intense heat of the desert, and how politics and religion in Quebec play into the film more than you might think.
The Oscar nominations are finally here! The usual suspects made the cut, and Dune: Part Two landed a Best Picture nomination—but Denis Villeneuve was snubbed, as many predicted. Could Dune pull off an upset and take home the top prize? We break down all the Oscar nominees, including how Emilia Pérez leads the 2025 Academy Awards nominations with a record-breaking 13 nods, surpassing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma. Following close behind are The Brutalist and Wicked, each securing 10 nominations. Other top contenders include A Complete Unknown and Conclave, both earning eight nods. These films will compete for Best Picture alongside Anora, Dune: Part Two, I'm Still Here, Nickel Boys, and The Substance. Big news in the acting categories as Demi Moore and Isabella Rossellini land their first-ever nominations, while Karla Sofía Gascón makes history as the first openly transgender performer to be nominated for Best Actress. Plus, Netflix leads all studios with 16 nominations. On today's show, we're diving deep into all the major categories, surprises, and snubs.
