//The Wire//2300Z May 20, 2026// //ROUTINE// //BLUF: POTENTIAL FOR WAR TO RESUME IN MIDDLE EAST REMAINS ELEVATED. VIOLENT ATTACKS, STREET TAKEOVERS, AND MOB ACTIVITY REMAINS PARAMOUNT IN UNITED STATES. U.S. TENSIONS WITH CUBA CONTINUE TO ESCALATE.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE----- -International Events-Middle East: This morning CENTCOM announced the boarding and seizure of the M/T CELESTIAL SEA in the Gulf of Oman. This vessel was attempting to run the American blockade to onload cargo within Iran.Analyst Comment: Otherwise the grand question of further military action remains. Regional aversion to a resumption of the conflict is understandably high, however military measures to prepare for a resumption of the war are ongoing. Both the Iranians and the United States have conducted substantial resupply and rearming campaigns during the ceasefire, and the Israelis have reached a point of semi-stability regarding their ground invasion of Lebanon. The Emirates and Saudis have likewise been the main belligerents actually conducting targeting efforts during the ceasefire, so they're also ready to go at a moment's notice. All diplomacy has failed so far, and all drafts of any sort of peace settlement provided indicate that all parties are probably further from a peace agreement right now, than when the war first began. All things considered, nothing might happen, or the war might kick off again soon, with President Trump himself indicating that the war might begin again this weekend.-HomeFront-Washington D.C. - This afternoon, the DoJ announced the indictment of Raul Castro on charges of conspiring to kill Americans, which is linked to the downing of two American planes in 1996.Analyst Comment: American aspirations for control of Cuba have become increasingly more serious over the past few weeks, with various tactics being used to apply pressure on the Cuban government. Of note, Castro is not physically located in the United States...he's in Cuba. As a result, this indictment could be laying the groundwork for a Maduro-style operation to snatch him, while simultaneously expanding the American foothold on the island.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Around the nation, various instances of civil crime and unrest have resulted in localized states of chaos in various locations. Street takeovers have become common in most major cities, and mass fights/mobs/riots have become a routine threat as well. In Rhode Island, a mass fight resulted in 3x people being stabbed at Narragansett Town Beach. The same day, a riot of 400-500 people was dispersed by police in Rochester, NY after a meetup turned into a mass fight in Ontario Beach Park. In Washington D.C. local authorities are still seeking information on the suspects who caused a mob attack at the Navy Yard Chipotle over the weekend. In Long Branch, New Jersey a mass riot broke out after mobs began attacking cars in Pier Village. This devolved into a full-blown riot, with a state of emergency being declared, a curfew being implemented, and riot police dispersing the crowds. In all of these cases, there was no reason for the unrest and destruction...this is just now routine behavior in many cities. As summertime arrives, the standard and routine behavioral/cultural considerations which make all major US cities very low-trust environments get dialed up to eleven, and street takeovers and flash mobs are very likely. From a threat assessment perspective, these types of incidents strike without cause or much warning, and take place purely due to the degradation of societal norms of accountability. As a result, there is no "trigger" to watch out for, and the only indicator of impending violence is the gathering of large crowds of people who are likely to engage in such behavior. Most of these riots are conducted purely for the enjoyment of violence, and consequently there's not much that can be done to mitigate these types of incidents, with the exception of avoiding large crowds which are likely to devolve into chaos. These riots are occurring during the middle of the day, on a weekday. And with Memorial Day weekend coming up in a few days, the potential for civil unrest is high.Analyst: S2A1 Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2underground Disclaimer: No LLMs were used in the writing of this report. //END REPORT//

Like the palm tree, the Everglades, Disney World, and the “Florida Man,” the orange is a classic symbol of the Sunshine State. But maybe not for much longer. Production has declined to catastrophic levels, a decrease of more than 95% in less than 25 years. It's a produce murder mystery—and Decoder Ring is tagging along with reporter Alex Sammon to crack the case. The suspects include insects, hurricanes, mortgage-backed securities, and the American habit of not reckoning with enormous, load-bearing flaws until it's way too late.In this episode, you'll hear from Alex, a feature writer at Slate, who visited Florida to check on the orange and write about its demise. You'll also hear from Gary Mormino, Florida lover, expert, and professor emeritus of Florida Studies at the University of South Florida. This episode was produced by Katie Shepherd and Evan Chung, Decoder Ring's supervising producer. In this show rather than one wine legend, I talk about a team of people who saved the wine world from The Great French Wine Blight of the 1860s – 1890s, which turned out to be caused a destructive, insect called phylloxera that came to Europe on American grapevines. I discuss the contributions of eight people who worked together and across continents to collectively save the European grapevine, Vitis vinifera, from extinction. Today, we drink Pinot Noir, Cabernet, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Syrah all because of the efforts of these people. This podcast is the story of what they did and how they did it. I discuss the contributions of: Jules-Émile Planchon Gaston Bazille CV Riley Hermann Jaeger George Hussman TV Munson Leo Laliman Pierra Viala All played key roles in identifying the cause of vine death in France, and finding the solutions that would work best. Marc Andreessen joins Joe Rogan for a conversation on AI, politics, technology, and the future of American society. They discuss how artificial intelligence is rapidly moving from novelty to infrastructure, and why Andreessen believes its long-term impact will be overwhelmingly positive despite growing public fear around automation and surveillance. The conversation covers the explosion of AI coding tools, the emergence of “AI agents,” and how these systems are already reshaping software development, medicine, and education. Andreessen argues that AI should be understood less as replacement technology and more as a universal layer of cognitive augmentation, giving individuals access to capabilities that previously required teams of experts. They also discuss the political and cultural dynamics surrounding AI, from fears about mass unemployment and surveillance to concerns about censorship, centralized power, and China's accelerating AI ecosystem. Along the way, the discussion expands into California politics, wealth taxes, urban decline, crime, housing, nuclear energy, and whether America can still build ambitious things at scale. This episode unpacks the key discussion points from the U.S.-China summit, including Taiwan, the Iran war, AI regulation, and the future of U.S.-China relations. Host: James M. Lindsay, Mary and David Boies Distinguished Senior Fellow in U.S. Foreign Policy, CFR Guest: Nicholas Burns, Roy and Barbara Goodman Family Professor of the Practice of Diplomacy and International Relations, Harvard University Kennedy School of Government; Former U.S. Ambassador to the People's Republic of China (2021–2025) We Discuss: Whether the Trump-Xi summit in Beijing represented a genuine diplomatic breakthrough or merely a cooling of tensions without resolving underlying conflicts. What the dueling U.S. and Chinese post-summit statements reveal about each country's divergent priorities and negotiating strategies. How significant the summit's economic deliverables—agricultural sales commitments, Boeing aircraft sales, and a potential tariff truce—actually are. How Xi Jinping's early and deliberate warning about Taiwan set the tone for the summit, and what his decision to leak that statement mid-meeting signals about Chinese tactics. Whether President Trump's equivocation about U.S. arms sales to Taiwan and the One China policy constitutes a major strategic mistake and what it means for American credibility with allies in the Indo-Pacific. What the presence of Putin in Beijing immediately after Trump's visit reveals about Chinese strategic alignments. Why an emerging U.S.-China dialogue on artificial intelligence regulation could prove to be the most consequential and underappreciated outcome of the Beijing summit. What concrete benchmarks—from tariff agreements to arms sales to Chinese follow-through on commitments—will determine whether this summit actually put U.S.-China relations on a more stable footing. Tara opens with an emotional reflection on her daughter's graduation and the challenges of raising teenage drivers before pivoting into a fiery breakdown of Trump's endorsement of Ken Paxton and what she calls the collapse of the Bush-era Republican “unit party.” The episode also dives into concerns about election integrity, Senate obstruction, and the alarming disappearance of millions of men from the American workforce. PODCAST SUMMARY Today's show begins on a deeply personal note as Tara talks about watching her daughter graduate and the emotional reality of seeing children grow up seemingly overnight. The conversation shifts into parenting teenage drivers, the dangers of reckless driving, and why seat belts, preventive healthcare, and life experience matter more than young people realize. Tara and Lee discuss fatal crashes involving teenage boys, the importance of airbags and seat belts, and how simple decisions can mean the difference between life and death. The show also touches on mammograms, colonoscopies, and the importance of preventive medicine. The second half of the episode pivots sharply into politics, with Tara arguing that Trump has finally broken from establishment Republicans by endorsing Ken Paxton over John Cornyn in Texas. Tara frames the battle as a war between the America First movement and the Bush-era “RINO” wing of the Republican Party, focusing heavily on the SAVE Act, immigration policy, voter rolls, and Senate leadership. The discussion expands into criticism of Senate Republicans, Mitch McConnell, and John Thune, with Tara arguing that establishment Republicans have repeatedly blocked Trump's agenda. The episode concludes with a discussion about declining male workforce participation in America and the growing number of working-age men who have disappeared from the labor force. KEY TOPICS Parenting and watching children graduate Teenage driving safety and seat belts Preventive healthcare and screenings Trump endorses Ken Paxton John Cornyn and the GOP establishment The SAVE Act and election integrity Mitch McConnell and Senate leadership criticism America First vs. Bush-era Republicans Workforce participation decline among men Economic and cultural shifts in America
DESCRIPTION Tara opens up about her daughter's graduation, parenting teenage drivers, and the life lessons kids refuse to learn the easy way. Then the conversation pivots hard into Washington, where Trump's endorsement of Ken Paxton signals a major shift in the Republican Party's war against establishment “RINOs,” open-border Republicans, and the old Bush-era political machine. PODCAST SUMMARY Today's show starts with a personal and emotional moment as Tara reflects on watching her daughter graduate and prepares for the next chapter of parenting. That leads into a broader conversation about teenagers, driving, seat belts, and the tragic consequences of reckless behavior behind the wheel. Tara and Lee discuss how many fatal crashes involving teenage boys are preventable, emphasizing the importance of seat belts, slowing down on curves, and understanding basic driving physics. They also highlight other preventable health tragedies, including the importance of mammograms and colonoscopies. In the second half of the show, the focus shifts sharply to Republican Party politics. Tara argues that the “RINO” wing of the GOP — including figures tied to the Bush-era establishment — has spent decades undermining conservative priorities, especially on immigration and border security. The discussion centers on Trump's endorsement of Ken Paxton and what Tara describes as a growing revolt against establishment Republicans like Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham. The episode frames the current GOP divide as a battle between grassroots conservatives and the old guard “unit party” Republicans who Tara says have prioritized compromise and open-border policies over American sovereignty. KEY TOPICS Parenting teenagers and watching kids grow up Teenage driving dangers and seat belt safety Preventable deaths from reckless driving Importance of preventive healthcare screenings Trump endorsing Ken Paxton GOP establishment vs. conservative populists Border security and immigration politics Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham, and Republican infighting The future direction of the Republican Party
Today's Poll Question at Smerconish.com: When you vote, which matters more: character or policy? Michael Smerconish explores one of the oldest and most uncomfortable questions in American politics: should voters prioritize a candidate's personal character or the policies they promise to deliver? Drawing on the views of Colin Powell and James Madison, plus examples from JFK, Nixon, Clinton, and Trump, Michael examines the gap between what voters say matters and how they actually vote. If millions knowingly support candidates they view as dishonest or immoral, is policy ultimately what drives elections? Or does character still define leadership in a meaningful way? This episode unpacks the tradeoffs voters make in the privacy of the voting booth. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. It's Wednesday, and unless you're Louisianan or something weird like that, that means election follow up. And election follow up means Greg Dworkin. And Greg Dworkin means pundits get abbreviated and rounded up. This morning, everyone's attention was diverted to The Slush Fund. Everyone was talking about it. Even the big time pols, who are supposed to be talking about such things, but often seem to take days to do so. Not this time! Even Josh Shapiro is on it. Republicans are on it, too. Some of them are hinting that they'll run away from it (i.e., the elected ones), while others (the trolling operatives) are already claiming they've formally applied for a payoff, as unlikely as that is to be true. By the way, does the name in the story ring a bell? He was supposed to have turned over a new leaf in life, but it turns out it's just the same leaf over and over. But after that, it was that elections thing I previously mentioned. They happened in Kentucky, where Thomas Massie found out (though he surely saw it coming) that keeping your 2024 campaign promises that were also Donald Trump's 2024 campaign promises gets you kicked out by Donald Trump in 2026. They also happened in Georgia, where Republicans also found out that preventing Donald Trump from fulfilling 2020 campaign promises didn't help, either. Georgia also reelected nominally Republican state Supreme Court Justices on the 2026 equivalent of the butterfly ballot. Anyhoo... Trump's backing got lots of crazy nutbars through their primaries, but getting through November is another story. This story, to be precise. And they've got data for that. After all that, pretty soon we'll get to see if it's the same story all over again, but in Texas. And keep in mind, Republicans who lose their jobs during Trump's "retribution tour" are now free to do as they please. (Unless they're threatened with murder or whatever.) But they still have to choose to show up to do it. On the Democratic side of the ledger, Jared Polis is pretty sure that eventually, everyone's gonna see his Tina Peters commutation as rainbows and unicorns. But right now, people see it as... well, there could be a horse involved. I guess. Israeli and American war "planners" may have given the reins over to the other end of the horse as well, when they hatched this scheme to bomb Mahmoud "I'm a Dinner Jacket" Ahmadinejad out of "jail" and into the presidency of Iran. It did not work, possibly on account of the bomb.
Opie returns from a weekend in Boston with a massive reality check on American history. Did you know Paul Revere's "midnight ride" actually involved 38 other people and remained a secret for nearly a century? Or that Sam Adams was a failing businessman who had nothing to do with brewing the beer that bears his name? We dive into Opie's visits to the graves of Hancock and Adams, plus the hilarious "clown car" cab moment in Boston. Back in New York, Ron the Waiter reports on the raw madness of the city: another horse and carriage running wild in the streets and the unbelievable, tragic story of a woman who perished after stepping into a manhole. Plus: The LIRR strike is finally over, the Knicks prep for the Cavs, and we discuss why "Giants" are taking over the NBA.
Robotaxis are multiplying across American cities… But are consumers actually ready to trust them? Zoox CEO Aicha Evans joins Rapid Response to talk about the company's strategy as an Amazon subsidiary, its intensifying rivalry with Waymo, and why a new partnership with Uber could be the key to getting autonomous rides from novelty to scale. Evans also reveals why she recruits what she calls an “invisible army of rebels” inside Zoox, and what Marie Curie and Nelson Mandela have to do with leading through uncertainty.Visit the Rapid Response website here: https://www.rapidresponseshow.com/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
A.M. Edition for May 19. The outcome of a handful of primaries across the country could signal whether Republicans are willing to adopt a form of MAGA politics that embraces leaders who break with President Trump, including Thomas Massie in Kentucky, WSJ's Washington coverage chief Damian Paletta says. Plus, oil prices slide on the prospect of a potential peace deal between Iran and the U.S. And with blocked data centers, plummeting poll numbers and booed commencement speeches, the American rebellion against artificial intelligence is gaining steam. Erin Price-Wright speaks with Michael Duffey and Dino Mavrookas about what it will take to rebuild the American defense industrial base for a new era of competition. As production capacity becomes a central constraint, they outline how the system must shift toward speed, scale, and modern manufacturing. The conversation covers the role of autonomy in both defense systems and industrial processes, and how new approaches to design, labor, and production can dramatically reduce cost and complexity. Mavrookas explains how building for software and autonomy enables entirely new classes of platforms, while Duffey emphasizes the need for structural changes in how the Department of Defense works with industry. They also discuss the importance of commercial markets in supporting defense capabilities, the fragility of existing supply chains, and why aligning private capital with national priorities is essential to long-term resilience. I find her refreshing. I find her intriguing. I find her wise: In wine. Natalie brings to the proverbial table an unabashed view of wine and she will tell you like it is. I have to tell you that having Natalie McLean on the show was one of those times where you know you could just keep talking for hours, and still barely scratch the surface. From the moment she cracked her opening line about starting to drink when she met her husband—"and haven't found a reason to stop"—I knew we were in for an episode rich in anecdotes, laughter, and real insight into the world of wine and the people orbiting it. I love a guest who doesn't take themselves too seriously, especially when that guest has the credentials and accolades to do so if they wanted. Right off the bat, the story of how Natalie McLean first dipped her toe—well, her glass—into wine was classic. The ex-husband, the MBA couple, and the journey through Spanish classes, golf, and finally onto wine studies left me grinning. You know, everyone's path to wine is different, but hers, starting with a night course in Toronto after failed golf and Spanish efforts, reminded me that for every over-serious sommelier out there, there's a person who just wanted to relax after work and stumbled into a passion. And let me tell you, Natalie McLean didn't just dip in; she cannonballed. I was genuinely impressed with the way she described her wine education—full sommelier diploma, authoring books like Red, White, and Drunk All Over, and racking up James Beard awards along the way. But what I really admire is her ability to bring it all down to earth. She calls herself the "Chief of Wine Happiness," which put an instant smile on my face—because at the end of the day, isn't that what a great bottle is supposed to do? There's this refreshing honesty in Natalie McLean about wine's intimidating side. I shared my own blunders—forgetting wine for family Easter, wandering into the market like any other consumer, grabbing a brand and sometimes striking out. She had her own: sweating bullets in a restaurant interview, staring at a wine list, and famously ordering a Cabernet with Dover sole at a big consulting dinner. Didn't get the job, but it sparked that classic realization: "I never want to feel that way again." I could relate—as much as anyone, even after decades in the business, that dusty wine list in a posh restaurant can still get your palms sweaty. The conversation took a fun turn when she described her divorce tastings—pairing Cabernets with burning love letters. We laughed, but there's a message in the humor: wine isn't just labels and numbers; it's woven into our life's best and worst moments. We got onto selecting wine in restaurants, talking to the sommelier, and why confidence is more important than credentials. That tip Natalie McLean gave—to "point at the price" when you don't want to say it out loud—folks, I'm adopting that one! I appreciated her point: most people just want a glass of pleasure, not an encyclopedia of terroirs. That struck home. Of course, we got nerdy too—talking about licensing, liquor laws in Canada, and the absurd hoops you still have to jump through to get a good bottle at home if you're north of the border. Yet, through it all, Natalie McLean kept it relatable and warm, whether it was "free my grapes" in Canada or shelf talkers in American supermarkets. Put simply, Natalie McLean reminded me and, I hope, everyone listening, that wine is about stories, connection, and yes, a good laugh at yourself every now and then. And that, for me, is what keeps the conversation, and the cellar, alive.

Starring Emmy-nominated TV actor Adam Scott, this horror movie about an author contemplating bleak endings at a remote Irish inn is about to introduce its indie darling director to a whole new American audience. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, there are nearly 170 Million employed civilians in the American workforce. However, that number may be an undercount because it does not include kids working at BizTown. Junior Achievement’s BizTown gives kids in fourth, fifth and sixth grade the chance to experience working in a simulated city in various fields, including healthcare, construction, food service, journalism, banking and more. Kids are given jobs based on interviews they’ve done and BizTown money to purchase various goods and services in their make believe city. Host Dave Miller and producer Rolie Hernandez spent a day at Biztown recently, talking to students at Boring's Hood View Adventist School and Vancouver's Columbia Valley Elementary to find out what a day of adulthood was like for students. They also spoke to the actual adult responsible for the exercise: Barbara Smith, CEO of Junior Achievement's BizTown.

Last week, Ben Gorashchenko looked down into the Chicago River at the long, twisting, wriggling creature he just reeled in. Gorashchenko was pulling in an American eel — an extremely rare find in the Chicago River. Researchers told Block Club that, to their knowledge, there is just one other known instance of someone catching an American eel in the Chicago River in recent years, when a child caught one in 2017. This catch also presents bigger mysteries — like what finding an eel in Chicago can tell us about the local ecosystem and how exactly this animal found its way to River North. CLICK HEREWho we areBlock Club Chicago is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit news organization dedicated to delivering reliable, relevant and nonpartisan coverage of Chicago's diverse neighborhoods. We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch seven years ago, we've published more than 30,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 150,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.
What does it mean to be American? What does it mean to be Asian American — and why, in 2026, are so many of us still leading with worry? Today, in honor of AANHPI Heritage Month, we're diving into the TAAF STAATUS Index 2026 by unpacking some stats that are eye-opening, some that are infuriating, and some that are deeply familiar. We'll talk about how Asian Americans are seen - and how we see ourselves - from the food on our plates to the question of whether you even have to be born here to belong here. It's AANHPI Heritage Month, and we have some thoughts (unsurprising to all of our regular listeners, we're sure!). If this episode resonates with you, please share widely - and let us know what action step you decided to take after listening. What to listen for: The latest data shows that Asian Americans in 2026 feel predominantly worried right now (compared to other groups who feel more "hopeful") - here's why we think that might be, and it may not be the why that's most common What does it mean to be American? Do you have to be born in the US? And why do so many folks of Asian descent feel you don't have to be born here to be American? How Asian culture shows up in our homes. Some ideas for what you can do this month: Watch an Asian film (made by Asians, featuring Asians), have some Asian food, research a significant moment in Asian American history, speak with your Asian friends to learn something new about their lives.
In this episode of Art Ed Radio, Tim Bogatz sits down with Melissa Birnbaum, a New York City art teacher and chair of the NYC chapter of the New York State Art Teachers Association (NYSATA). Melissa teaches at an international high school in the Bronx where 100% of her students are American newcomers and native Spanish speakers--many of whom have never had an art lesson in their lives. She shares how she designs her choice-based art room to meet students exactly where they are, using sketchbook journals, materials play, and a scaffolded approach that builds foundational skills while honoring each student's creative instincts and lived experience. Tim and Melissa also dig deep into one of the most meaningful topics in art education: resilience. Melissa explains what resilience actually looks like in her classroom, and what she learns from her students. She talks about the power of "confidence coaching," normalizing failure, and why loving your students is the most effective classroom management strategy there is. Ramones. Blondie. Television. Talking Heads. Patti Smith. New York Dolls. Everyone knows the big names that made New York City THE epicenter of American punk rock in the 1970s. But that's only a part of the story... For every band that "made it" in some way, there were hundreds of bands who either faded into obscurity or never got the break they deserved. They shared the same stages at legendary clubs like CBGB and Max's Kansas City. And their stories are essential to the NYC punk revolution of the era. One of those bands was Manhattan's The Rousers, whose drummer, Jerid O'Connell, joins us as Third Lad today! Rousers 1979 Sire Session is out now on Left For Dead Records on both black and translucent white individually numbered 12” LP vinyl and 2 x CD set (with bonus tracks). Inspired by the New York Dolls, Ramones and such immortal ‘50s rockers as twangy guitar hero Duane Eddy, the Rousers were woefully under-documented in their prime. A few major labels sniffed around, including RCA and Warner Bros. subdivision Sire. But no one committed them to vinyl until their single “Party Boy” b/w “Don't Let The Band Stop Playing” 45 (produced by Wayne Kramer of the MC5) via Jimboco in 1981. This oversight is corrected with the release of the demos that the original Rousers lineup cut for Sire in the label's basement studio on New York's Upper West Side in 1979. Never before released, the tapes sat shelved in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's Sire archives for decades, digitized and restored in 2024. This is not a footnote. It's a rescue mission. Tracked to tape under the sharp ear of Ed Stasium, hot off sessions with the Ramones and Talking Heads, the 1979 Sire demos are raw, radiant, and long overdue for release. They captured the Rousers in full dragstrip ignition mode: dueling Gibson guitars plugged into Fender amps for maximum punk twang, hiccupping Elvis/Buddy Holly vocal inflections, and a rhythm section built for backseat makeouts and beer-splashed dance floors. We celebrate the true underground of NYC punk this week, including Jerid's incredible stories ranging from hanging out with Sid Vicious the week before his death to the Rousers' neighbor Madonna opening for them. Josh opens the show breaking down the high-stakes Kentucky primary as anti-Trump Congressman Thomas Massie faces off against Trump-backed challenger Ed Gallen. Josh explains what a Massie victory would mean for President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement, while also sounding the alarm over polls showing the president sitting under 40% in key numbers. Josh also reacts to comments from California Governor Gavin Newsom about a potential “break the glass” scenario if two Republicans advance in California’s governor primary, exposing just how panicked Democrats are becoming about losing control. Plus, Josh takes aim at remarks from New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani regarding a famous quote from President Ronald Reagan. While Josh says he doesn’t fully agree with Reagan’s quote in today’s economy, he argues Mamdani is completely detached from reality for claiming hard-working Americans can’t still get ahead. Josh also exposes the outrageous ways New York City is spending taxpayer dollars, dives into the true meaning behind “Nakba,” and explains why the release of a recent propaganda video should outrage every American.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of Tax Tuesday, Anderson Advisors' Barley Bowler, CPA, and Eliot Thomas, Esq., answer listener questions covering a broad range of real estate, retirement, and investment tax topics. They break down cost segregation studies and depreciation recapture, explaining how bonus depreciation accelerates deductions and how 1031 exchanges and stepped-up basis can help investors defer or eliminate gain entirely. They address whether vacated rental rooms can qualify as deductible office space, and walk through how multi-state 1099 income is taxed when a worker performs services in Kansas for California patients through a Utah company. Barley and Eliot also clarify how MAGI determines the taxable portion of Social Security benefits in retirement, and confirm that qualified retirement plan distributions are protected from California taxation once a taxpayer has established residency in Nevada. Additional topics include 529 college savings plans for children attending accredited foreign universities, combining Roth IRAs with a payroll strategy for minor children, when Schedule E versus Schedule C applies to short-term rental income, and the significant hurdles of qualifying for Trader Tax Status — along with an alternative C-corporation trading structure that may offer far greater and more reliable tax advantages. Tune in for expert advice on these topics and more! Submit your tax question to taxtuesday@andersonadvisors.com Highlights/Topics: [00:00] Intro to Tax Tuesday with Eliot and Barley [7:10] "I would like to know more about cost segregation and depreciation recapture on property sales." Cost segregation accelerates deductions upfront. Recapture taxes those gains at ordinary rates upon sale. [18:00] "At the beginning of this year, I moved into a new home. At my previous residence, I had been renting two rooms, and I am currently working to sublet them. I am still on the lease and committed to covering the cost of those two rooms until I find replacements. My question is: since I am continuing to pay for these rooms, would it be possible to classify them as office space and potentially use them as a tax deduction?" Have your business assume the lease directly. That creates a clean, legitimate deduction. [22:53] "My wife is doing remote 1099 work, and I had a question on where state taxes are due. We live in Kansas and she performs the work from a home office or rented office space in Kansas. She is performing this work through a contracting/locums company based out of Utah, but the current work she is providing is for patients in California. Do we pay KS or CA state income tax for this 1099 work?" Both Kansas and California claim the income. Kansas credits taxes already paid to California. [29:35] "Taxes in retirement: we know you can be taxed on Social Security. We don't know the details. How much can you make to avoid being taxed? Does the IRS include all incomes, passive and active? We just don't have details." Between 50–85% of benefits may be taxable. MAGI includes all income, even tax-exempt interest. [36:54] "I have been a Nevada resident for 2 years. I started my retirement from a California corporation this year. Can California tax my retirement benefits now that I am a NV resident?" No. Federal law fully protects qualified retirement benefits paid to Nevada residents. [40:55] "I am a business owner in Texas. My twin kids are growing up in a foreign country with their cousins. They may want to pursue higher education there. I haven't started a 529 college savings plan yet. If they decide not to go to college at an American university, what would be the best type of tax-sheltered account to invest in, for the kids?" 529 plans cover accredited foreign universities. Combine with a Roth IRA for maximum impact. [48:17] "Is it okay to use Schedule E to report short-term rental income?" Yes, if you provide only minimal services. Substantial services push income to Schedule C. [53:55] "For 2025 tax year, I made more than 800 trades - frequently - 3 days/week throughout the year. I made profits both from long-term investing and short-term trades. Am I eligible for Trader Tax Status and able to deduct my expenses in 2025 filing (I applied for extension)." Trader Tax Status is highly subjective and audit-prone. A C-corp trading structure is safer. Resources:
