On this episode of Mining Stock Daily, Paulo Macro returns for a wide-ranging discussion on today's turbulent economic landscape. Paulo unpacks the core narrative driving gold, explaining its rise as a reaction to currency debasement and a broader crisis of confidence in public institutions. He draws compelling parallels between the current speculative fervor and historical periods like the lead-up to the 1929 crash, noting that financial knowledge seems cyclical as each generation relearns the same lessons. The conversation also delves into specific commodities, highlighting how major supply disruptions in copper and uranium are being largely ignored by generalist investors. They analyze the strategic implications and potential dangers of the U.S. government taking equity positions in private resource companies. While expressing acute concern for risk in the near term, Paulo explains why the underlying bull market for real assets remains philosophically intact. This episode of Mining Stock Daily is brought to you by... Revival Gold is one of the largest pure gold mine developer operating in the United States. Curses, hexes, and haunted houses—oh my! It's officially spooky season and we're wading into the dark waters of family legacies, sinister spirits, and houses that seem hellbent on destroying anyone who dares to live within their walls. From generational name curses to homes that literally fall apart around their inhabitants, these listener stories remind us that sometimes bad luck isn't random—it's inherited, conjured, or tied to the very land beneath our feet. Stories include: A house so burdened with dark energy that tenants' lives devolve in tragedy, a child spirit calls for his mother, and even skeptics are driven to terror.  A family home in Mexico haunted by shadowy figures, chains dragging across the floor, and a sinister spirit that whispers into your ear. A lifelong haunting by a spirit named George, who may have latched on so tightly he passed from one partner to another like the ultimate cursed companion. A cursed UK home built on the ashes of a pub, where a boxer's ghost lies bleeding and a sinister entity named Kevin taunts a listener through seizures. So whether you believe curses are cast, inherited, or simply born from a place, these stories will have you wondering what dark energy might be following you. CHICAGO POLICE OFFICER INDICTED FOR SMUGGLING GUNS TO CARTEL.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-United Kingdom: Scandal has erupted following the announcement of a national identification paper scheme. The British government is set to implement a mandatory digital ID system that will be required for all British citizens to be allowed to function in society.Europe: Drone incursions have continued over the past few days, with limited reports of drone incursions popping up in Norway and Denmark. Overnight, more drones were spotted over the port city of Korsor, along with a handful of airports scattered around the country.Analyst Comment: Right now it's hard to tell if these drone reports are any different than the standard incursions that have become common in civilian aviation over the past few years. When an airport sends out a hazard report to pilots, a description of "UAS activity" doesn't really indicate much. What is quite clear is that the initial drone reports in Denmark were vastly different than most of the typical quadcopter reports that are more common. However, now that media attention is on the skies once again, it's possible that more drone sightings will be reported. It's also very likely that, now that people are paying attention, more people will confuse legitimate drone threats with commercial aircraft, as has been a trend lately.-HomeFront-Mississippi: This morning 911 call center services went offline for the entire state, which local authorities state were caused by a "series of fiber optic cuts".Analyst Comment: Right now it's not clear as to if this was the result of malign action, or by accident. Generally speaking it would be a bad idea for an entire state's critical infrastructure to be vulnerable to one swipe of a backhoe, but it's certainly possible.Illinois: A Chicago police officer has been indicted for smuggling weapons for cartels in Mexico. The indictment states that Officer Kevin Rodriguez used his law enforcement credentials to purchase firearms that were illegal for normal citizens to buy in the states of Illinois and Indiana. He was then paid by a cartel member by the name of Diego Valdez, who took possession of the firearms and smuggled them into Mexico. Analyst Comment: This scheme allegedly ran from September to December of 2024, and so far all of the court documents indicate that only two rifles were smuggled into Mexico. However, this may be a larger network, as these types of arrangements usually go on for some time before they are detected.Alaska: This morning US Air Force aircraft were scrambled to intercept Russian bombers off the west coast. A flight of Russian Tu-95 BEAR H aircraft were observed approaching the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), which prompted American aircraft to intercept them and escort them during their flight near American airspace.Analyst Comment: This is a fairly standard event that usually goes unnoticed most of the time. However, this case is probably related to President Trump's recent comments on Russia's incursions in Europe, namely stating that European powers should shoot down Russian aircraft that violate their airspace.New York: As the UN General Assembly continues, President Trump met with the new leader of Syria, Ahmed Al-Sharq, where he is expected to be a focal point of this year's summit.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: As a reminder, Ahmed Al-Sharq changed his name upon seizing power a few months ago. His previous name was Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, a high-ranking al-Qaeda commander from the Global War on Terror. Upon his AQ-linked militia group seizing power during the fall of the Assad regime, he changed

For many children, going barefoot isn't a choice—it's a daily struggle that puts their health, safety, and future at risk. But one pair of shoes can change that story.Today, we'll hear how Buckner Shoes for Orphan Souls is bringing hope and dignity to vulnerable children around the world. Shawn Spurrier joins us to share how God is changing lives through something as ordinary—and extraordinary—as shoes.Shawn Spurrier is the Director of Buckner Shoes for Orphan Souls at Buckner International, an underwriter of Faith & Finance. A Mission That Began in DallasBuckner Shoes for Orphan Souls started in 1999 as a local effort in Dallas, Texas, to serve children in Russian orphanages. Over 25 years later, God has expanded this work into a global ministry. Today, more than 5 million children in 86 countries have received shoes through the generosity of churches, businesses, and believers across the U.S.What began as a small act of compassion has grown into a worldwide movement of hope.More Than Shoes: Health, Safety, and EducationAround 300 million children worldwide lack access to shoes. This barrier affects nearly every aspect of life:Health—Shoes prevent footborne diseases, many of which carry social stigma and long-term consequences.Education—In many countries, shoes are required for school attendance. Without them, children are forced to stay home, trapped in cycles of poverty.Hope—Receiving shoes as a gift in Jesus' name opens hearts to the Gospel and connects families with life-changing ministries.Shoes are more than fabric and rubber—they are a bridge to dignity, opportunity, and transformation.Restoring Dignity for FamiliesFor many of us, buying new shoes for back-to-school is routine. But in parts of the world where Buckner serves, parents may spend months saving to afford just one pair—or go without entirely. Some families must rotate a single pair of shoes between siblings, deciding who can attend school on a given day.The gift of shoes restores dignity to parents, enabling them to provide for their children and giving kids the confidence to learn, grow, and thrive.Global Reach and Local ImpactBuckner's ministry extends both globally and locally:United States—Shoe distributions in Texas, including for families affected by flooding.Latin America—Serving children in Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Honduras, and Peru.Africa—Programs in Ethiopia and Kenya.Beyond—Partnerships have extended Buckner's reach into 75+ additional countries.Every pair of shoes opens the door to broader ministry. Following the regulatory changes that led to a 30% drop in express volumes from China/Hong Kong, DHL surges customs agent hiring as new tariffs confuse importers. Despite sourcing diversification driving double-digit growth from countries like Vietnam and Mexico, DHL Express is forecasting an unusually muted peak season lift of just 20% to 25%, down significantly from the typical 40% to 50% jump. Domestically, we dive into the contentious legal battle over California's Advanced Clean Trucks Rule (ACT) as the Federal goverment fires back in court over California waiver cancellation. Owner-operators, who face astronomical repair costs like $21,000 for emissions equipment on a $30,000 truck, argue that these standards dramatically drive up operating expenses, leading major associations to back regulatory rollbacks, as noted in Truckers back Trump's emissions rollback at EPA. The soft freight market highlights the intense need for financial agility, illustrated by a recent small carrier filing for Chapter 11, where their lawyer stressed that the cash needed for operations “doesn't generate itself”. This scenario emphasizes why the reliance on factoring services is now a critical lifeline for many smaller outfits struggling in the current economic environment, as detailed in Small carrier's bankruptcy spells out need for factoring. We examine how the annual corn harvest creates a short but lucrative peak season for Midwestern carriers, relying heavily on the FMCSA agricultural commodity exemption to maximize hours and earnings, as explored in How the corn harvest season changes freight networks across the Midwest. Finally, we analyze the structural shifts impacting the rails following the Union Pacific/Norfolk Southern proposed merger, where a union job guarantee meant to secure support is being widely warned against by former executives, as heard in Rail merger: Lifetime job is great “until you are stuck in it”. A "relentless" surge has happened in U.S-Mexico trade, which reached a staggering $840 billion in 2024 and jumped another 21% year-to-date in 2025. Companies like Echo Global Logistics are capitalizing on this growth, accelerating investment by opening a new office in Monterrey, Mexico, a key hub in the "golden triangle" of manufacturing. Nearshoring significantly enhances supply chain efficiency, cutting transit times from finished product to a U.S. door down to just 24 to 72 hours, far superior to the 14 to 20 days typically needed for freight coming from Asia. Shifting focus to the Pacific ports, we analyze the sharp, "truly historic decline" in U.S. container imports, projected to fall 15.7% for the remainder of 2025, driven by China tariffs and shipment front-loading. This soft volume is "absolutely hammering" the domestic trucking sector, leading to significant cuts in Q3 and Q4 earnings estimates for major asset-based truckload carriers like Schneider and Werner. Small carriers are feeling a "brutal" cash flow crisis, illustrated by the Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing of H5 Transport, which relied heavily on factoring to make weekly payroll. Union Pacific's proposed merger with Norfolk Southern is still on, aimed at achieving $1 billion in annual cost savings. We discuss why industry veterans caution that the secured lifetime job protection guarantees for the SMART-TD union might become a "ticket to misery" for employees forced into undesirable work or relocations. Ultimately, navigating the freight industry's future requires adapting to three massive disruptive forces: effectively integrating AI and FreightTech, managing geopolitical shifts and trade policies, and adjusting to changing workforce dynamics due to automation. Loren Voss, Public Service Fellow at Lawfare, sits down with Dan Byman, Lawfare Foreign Policy Editor and the Director of the Warfare, Irregular Threats, and Terrorism Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies; Ryan Berg, Director of the Americas Program and Head of the Future of Venezuela Initiative also at CSIS; and Lawfare Senior Editor Scott R. Anderson. They talk about the new United States approach to drug smuggling, the lethal strikes against drug smuggling boats, and the ongoing counterdrug efforts in Mexico.Anderson applies international law to the facts as known on the military strikes on drug smuggling boats, highlighting the difficulties of treating drug smuggling as a “use of force” and a transnational criminal organization as a non-state armed group. Byman and Berg discuss the importance of the host government in dealing with terrorist or criminal threats, but are skeptical that the counterterrorism framing will be effective without also addressing the demand for drugs within the United States. The group ends with a discussion on how current strategies and legal analysis could be applied to other geographies or criminal groups. Were those supplies to be interrupted as a result of trade or other disputes, the eurozone would suffer economic harm, they warned. A Word With You

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 24, 2025

Some longtime friends dropped by for a visit and they told us a moving story of what had happened to their son. Tom had been a missionary pilot in Mexico - one of those spiritual heroes, I think, who take the Gospel and God's help to places where it could otherwise never go, including a mountain village in Mexico where the pilots have been God's instruments to launch a mighty work for Christ. And then came the crash. With three missionary pilots and several passengers aboard, a defect in their plane's almost new engine caused a terrible crash. Tom was one of those who survived that crash that could very well have killed everyone. The villagers who loved them actually traveled hours to reach them and rescue them. Tom's body was really badly shattered, and his recovery was long, grueling. But then he was flown back to the area where he ministered. His parents really choked up, and so did we, when they told us what happened as he got off the plane. There to greet him was a crowd of cheering Mexican friends. And they were holding a banner that simply said "Welcome home, Captain Tom!" I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Your 'Welcome Home.'" I'm hoping you and I can get a "welcome home" like that in heaven someday. It all depends on what we live for in the years until we get home. In our word for today from the Word of God, Paul clearly lays out what matters most to him about the legacy of his life. In 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20, he writes these words to the people that he's invested his life in spiritually: "What is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when He comes? Is it not you? Indeed, you are our glory and joy." Paul is looking forward to getting to heaven and seeing a lot of people that he touched for eternity. That's the welcoming party he's looking for. Basically, Paul says there are two things that matter in life: the Savior you serve and the lives you touch. That's your reward for the years you spend on this planet, that's your legacy, that's your joy. Well, at least it's supposed to be. It's possible that your life's priorities have gotten a little inverted by the pressures and the people and the problems that tend to fill up your life. You've been taken over by a truckload of earth-stuff. One friend of mine summed it up pretty well the other day. When someone asked him if he's ever played Trivial Pursuit, he said, "Every day." He wasn't talking about the game. He's talking about his life. Just hearing about Pilot Tom's "welcome home" was an important values-clarification reminder. If you've become consumed and sidetracked with a lot of stuff that's non-eternal, maybe it's time to get with Jesus and replace your agenda with His agenda to "seek first His kingdom" (Matthew 6:33). And if you're a little weary or discouraged in your faithful service for Jesus, I hope you'll be encouraged by the thought of the reward you're building, the legacy you're developing and the lives that have been touched by your sacrifices who will be thanking you forever. The people you've risked to take to heaven with you will be there, humanly speaking, because you cared. The lives that have been touched by the ministries you've given to will, in the Bible's words, be "credited to your account" (Philippians 4:17). All that really matters is what's going to meet you when you get to heaven. First, your Savior who will welcome you with the words you have lived for, "Well done, good and faithful servant." And the people your life in Christ has touched for eternity. Who knows, maybe they'll be holding a banner with your name on it that says, "Welcome home!"

Ep 158 Description:  “If something feels good and you are not harming anyone, keep doing it, because pleasure will give you health, as simple as that.” —Samara Ferrara Imagine for a moment that your body's capacity for pleasure is your greatest strength in birth. That every fear, every past pain, could be transformed into a source of profound power and release. This isn't a fantasy; it's an ancient wisdom rooted not in fear, but in profound joy, release, and presence. Samara Ferrara is a professional home birth midwife in Mexico who brings a blend of science, spirit, and sacred care to her work. Having witnessed birth as a child and later birthing her own three children at home, she embodies a deep trust in the body's innate wisdom. Her courageous journey of healing from past trauma offers profound insight into how women can reclaim their sovereignty and transform the birthing process through pleasure. Tune in as Debra and Samara dive into the heart of Samara's practice, exploring how her personal story with pleasure and spiritual connection guides her work. She also shares a moving homebirth experience that revealed birth as a rite of passage and opens up about how motherhood, loss, and life's deepest cycles have shaped her sacred service to others.    Connect with Debra! Something Shiny: ADHD!
Why are folks so scared of overdiagnosis?

    Something Shiny: ADHD!

Check out the collection of fidgets Team Shiny loves! Is the 'overdiagnosing' of ADHD, autism, and other neurodevelopmental conditions a 'danger,' and to whom? Isabelle and David continue taking some common myths and misperceptions, questioning who and how we gatekeep 'neurodiversity' (including the idea that maybe there really is no 'neurotypical')--and how one group's fears that these labels harm us cannot negate the fear neurospicy folks have that they will be in trouble, or judged, or stigmatized for being who they are and unmasking. Also using the power of compassion and inviting more conversations, while not jumping to cancelling anyone--because everyone gets to fart in an elevator once or twice. -----Isabelle is coming in hot. She continues to explore her reaction to a podcast episode she listened to recently, Armchair Expert with guest Suzanne O'Sullivan on overdiagnosis, which went from covering seizure disorders to ADHD and autism, especially high-masking autism, real quick.  She is so frustrated that a non-expert on ADHD—someone like O'Sullivan, whose expertise is working with epilepsy and seizure disorders, has now spent so much time talking about ADHD and autism when that is not an area of expertise. David names that he thinks this is an important conversation to have, because we are validating the other perspectives. There is a medical model of disease sets us up to want to oppose or eradicate the ‘disease;' where things like neurodevelopment conditions like ADHD and autism are not something to be ‘cured' or ‘fixed.” David makes the comparison, its like a bunch of people sitting and talking about going to Mexico when no one has ever been there—cultural representation. For example, someone has mild amounts of anxiety throughout the day. They understand this anxiety as having ADHD. They use ADHD interventions to help them and they found a community, and it makes sense and they feel better, it works for them. And then someone comes up with a reason to say that person does not have ADHD, that this definition does not apply—why are we being so careful when it comes to gatekeeping diversity, including neurodiversity?  This wonderful person that David met at a training, named Shay, asked: is there anyone that is neurotypical? We could think of the difference between traits and states. And then he thought about personal examples. He doesn't know if there is someone "neurotypical." Would it to be less shocking that people have different neurological needs or educational differences if we recognized that there may be no 'one' baseline or group to compare everything to? And how quickly we dismiss difference--like knowing that because David listened to books, the argument that what he did was not 'reading'--but we get back to actual question, which is...what was the task, and did it get done?  Often, talking about the fantasy of how ADHD looks or how its supposed to be, it's more about other people. A lot of people with ADHD believe that if its easy for them, they're cheating. Because its supposed to be hard. Do most non-ADHD people think that way?  The debates are now that anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD—these are neurological differences—they are also looking at causal factors to all these conditions that are not chosen. So is the only person who is ‘normal' the person who has no feelings, reactions, or responses?  Someone who has no big responses to stimuli, someone who is antisocial? Isabelle does fall into the categorizing and black and white thinking, and how its a part of learning, to categorize and generalize. This is not dissimilar to how people talk about race, gender, and about culturally defined parts of experiences because we collectively make them a thing—maybe its myth making and collective storytelling. There is a gravitational pull to the idea of being neurotypical or mentally ‘well' and then there's good and bad. Isabelle wonders where the compassion goes? David speaks up—they have compassion. People are scared. People are scared and when we're scared, we have a reflexive reactions. People have found safety or comfort in the label of ‘normal' or ‘neurotypical,' and they see difference as not good, and they're really trying to, in their mind, help people in their messaging. Terror management theory: when you're scared, you find a group of people who are like you and you band together to be less scared. So, there are a chunk of people out there who are getting very specific about who is in or out of the group.  David can have a lot of compassion for that fear, that fear about who gets to belong. But he also wants to speak to the neurodivergent person who is doing something you tell them will help—and it hurts them? It's a real fear we carry. David uses the example of his mom—bless her heart (see the Southern US use of this phrase on many levels below)—who grew up being told the importance of having arch support in shoes, and so when David had flat feet, she had him use these inserts—David is not blaming his mom, she did the best she could—lots of people are told not to touch things, don't go into the light. Every neurodivergent person has to have the fear “I'm doing this wrong, I'm in trouble, I'm doing something bad!” To little David: you know, you have flat feet, you have more stability around corners—but another voice would say “don't tell anyone you have flat feet, it's bad.” He has compassion for the fear people have that want everyone to be the same, to not stand out or be different, and there is also a fear that neurodivergent people sit with every day about whether or not they're allowed to act the way they act. Isabelle names that the podcasters were saying “oh, these diagnoses are an excuse to then act in ways that are socially awkward.” Ahem. Isabelle describes how this feels like when she describes her inner workings to someone in all the steps she takes when she sits down next to someone, wondering if this is the right physical distance, is she staring at their eyebrows too long, is she pausing appropriately, etc.—and when she unmasks and reveals this, the person considers it a compliment to say “I couldn't tell.” It's the idea that someone outside of you knows more about your experience than you do. The way that diagnoses connect to power and gatekeeping for services and Isabelle makes the point that those who are saying “over diagnosis is dangerous”—to whom? On what planet are folks who are neurospicy getting enough of the supports and services and resources and access that they need? The system is already failing most of us. David names: this isn't cancer, this isn't people getting chemo erroneously. There is no danger in identification, it's about getting our needs met. What do we do as a society to neglected people, and the more you know about your needs, the less of a danger being neglected becomes. This is a question of someone who knows a lot about things wandered over into another area and made bold statements without the expertise. Isabelle was extra miffed that she also dismissed the intersections of Autism, ADHD, POTS, hyper mobile Ehlers Danlos, and MCAS and ‘nonexistent' —so damaging and harmful. These are real things, the interconnectedness of them is being actively researched, just because you are new to the party does not make something false or untrue. As David puts it, in the 70's or 80's, the APA took a vote to decide if being gay was good or bad, essentially (“do we keep gayness as a disorder?” Yes folks, this was that recently. GAH.). Now imagine someone was asleep for ten years and missed that memo and is now walking around looking at pride flags wondering “why are there so man...

In this episode of The Wright Report, we cover Jimmy Kimmel's controversial return to television, a Supreme Court ruling that could reshape presidential power, the growing struggles of America's farmers and truckers, and new White House warnings about Tylenol and autism. From free speech fights to medical debates, today's brief connects culture, politics, and science shaping America's future.   Jimmy Kimmel Returns to Air with FCC Debate: Disney announced Kimmel would return, calling his remarks “ill-timed and insensitive” but not admitting his claims about Charlie Kirk's assassin were lies. Sinclair caved after death threats, canceling a Kirk tribute and airing Kimmel again. Senators Rand Paul and Ted Cruz blasted Trump's FCC for even raising news distortion, with Cruz comparing it to “Goodfellas.” Bryan warned, “We cannot sit down with the modern Democrat party… they assassinate people who get in the way — like Charlie Kirk.”   Supreme Court Expands Presidential Power: In a 6–3 decision, the Court allowed Trump to fire a Democrat FTC commissioner while hearing the full case in December. The ruling challenges the 1935 precedent limiting executive power. Bryan explains it could restore Jefferson-style authority, including presidential impoundment of spending. “Welcome to the new version of American democracy… it's a bit of a mess right now.”   Farmers, Ranchers, and Truckers Under Pressure: New screwworm cases in northern Mexico threaten U.S. cattle herds already at historic lows. Soybean farmers face collapse as Xi stops buying American crops, while truckers lose money under depressed rates and costly California regulations. Critics called the claims weak, but Bryan compared it to past medical dogmas debunked by Dr. Barry Marshall, who proved ulcers were caused by bacteria: “Quite literally the entire world of Medical Science was wrong. Josh Weinberg recently checked in with Kurt Refsnider, a bikepacker attempting the first full ride of the Orogenesis Trail. At roughly 5,000 miles, the route begins at the Canada–US border and travels through Washington, Oregon, and California to the Mexico border, then onto the Baja Divide. At the time of recording, Kurt was in Paisley, Oregon, about 1,100 miles in, nearing California and the halfway point through the U.S. section.Kurt details how challenging the ride through Washington was, with nearly 120,000 feet of climbing and descending over rugged moto trails and non-motorized singletrack near Mount St. Helens. He faced detours due to land closures, and construction added to the difficulty.Once in Oregon, Kurt has primarily followed the Oregon Timber Trail. Using elevation gain as a metric for daily effort, he explains how climbing has taken priority over daily mileage, aiming for 7,000 to 8,000 feet of climbing per day.He also dives into gear maintenance and resupply strategies, which have been tough, with dust wearing down his suspension and brake pads, and unpredictable provision availability. He's already swapped out some wear items and explains how opting for battery packs over a dynamo hub for power has worked out.Along the way, Kurt has been fueled by strong community support.Folks following along are tracking his progress, offering lodging, bringing food, and sharing real-time trail conditions. Looking ahead, he faces a tough, deadfall-heavy section in southern Oregon. Once he crosses into California, he'll encounter faster ATV trails before taking a rest near Quincy and heading into long singletrack sections through Truckee and Tahoe, where we plan to catch up with him again.

Why does Mexico owe the US water?

The major rivers of the Rio Grande and the Colorado run through both the United States and Mexico and they are the source of a water sharing agreement between the two countries that dates back to 1944. Under the terms of this treaty, Mexico must send 430 million cubic metres of water per year from the Rio Grande to the US, to supply Texas and dozens of cities near the border. Whilst the US sends a much larger allocation of nearly 1.85 billion cubic metres of water a year, from the Colorado River to supply Mexico's border cities like Mexicali and Tijuana. But 80 years on, a deepening row over a shortage of water has put the treaty in jeopardy. Mexico is in arrears and has failed to keep up with its water deliveries to the US for much of this century and its unlikely to meet its obligation this year too. Farmers on both sides are struggling to water their crops, whilst the border cities are facing water shortages for both their populations and industries. And pressure on Mexico is mounting with President Trump earlier this year accusing Mexico of ‘stealing' the water. So this week on The Inquiry, we're asking ‘Why does Mexico owe the US water?'Contributors: Stephen Mumme, Emeritus Professor in Political Science, Colorado State University, USA Dr Rosario Sanchez, Senior Research Scientist, Texas Water Resources Institute, USA Susanne Schmeier, Professor in Water Co-operation, Law and Diplomacy, IHE Delft, The Netherlands. "What we do in Mexico is my dream for Minnesota. We provide free spay neuter to both owned and street animals every single week." This episode is sponsored-in-part by Maddie's Fund and The Community Cat Clinic. In this international perspective episode, host Stacy LeBaron speaks with Maia Rumpho, founder of Pet Project Rescue, who turned a chance encounter with a street dog in Mexico into a binational animal welfare organization. Maia's journey began in 2007 during an engagement trip to Mexico, where rescuing a street dog sparked her understanding of the resource disparities between communities. What started as a dog-focused rescue evolved into Minnesota's only free TNR program, while maintaining weekly spay/neuter clinics in Mexico that serve as a model for comprehensive community animal care. Maia shares how her social work background shapes her approach to animal welfare, recognizing that effective programs must address barriers facing the people who care for community cats. Her organization removes financial obstacles that might force caregivers to choose between their own basic needs and helping animals. The conversation explores the striking differences between urban and rural cat populations in Minnesota, where urban colonies typically number 10 or fewer cats while rural areas often have 30 or more. Maia discusses the challenge of veterinary access in rural areas, where both distance and lack of feral cat experience among local veterinarians create significant barriers. The discussion highlights Maia's experience working in Mexico, where government support, animal control cooperation, and cross-organizational teamwork create an environment she wishes could be replicated in Minnesota. Her Mexico programs include weekly clinics serving 25 animals and annual three-day events handling 1,100-1,200 animals with remarkable efficiency. Maia's vision includes bringing MASH-style clinics to Minnesota, already piloting monthly Friday clinics in North Minneapolis that target the city's highest need area. This episode demonstrates how international experience can inform domestic programs and why collaboration across all sectors is essential for addressing community cat overpopulation. Press play now for: How a 2007 Mexico engagement trip sparked Minnesota's only free TNR program The dramatic scale difference: 30+ cat rural colonies vs. 10 or fewer urban populations Mexico's collaborative model with government support and skilled veterinarians Weekly clinics serving 25 animals and annual 1,100+ animal three-day events Why Minnesota procedures cost 4-6 times more than Mexico operations Adapting Mexican high-volume models for North Minneapolis communities The authorization system that provides flexibility for unexpected additional cats Strategic targeting of areas with highest need and lowest income brackets Why summer is optimal timing for TNR activities nationwide Resources mentioned: Pet Project Rescue website (https://petprojectrescue.com/) Pet Project Rescue Instagram: @PPR_mpls (https://www.instagram.com/ppr_mpls/) Pet Project Rescue Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/PetProjectRescue/) Pet Project Rescue TNR Program (https://petprojectrescue.com/about/programs/trap-neuter-return-tnr/) Coco's Animal Welfare - Playa del Carmen, Mexico partner (https://cocosanimalwelfare.org) Rocco's Relief Foundation - Mexico City area partner (https://rrfmexico.org) MN SNAP - Minnesota Spay Neuter Assistance Program (https://mnsnap.org/) Contact: Info@PetProjectRescue.com Sponsor Links: Maddie's Fund (https://www.communitycatspodcast.com/maddies631) The Community Cat Clinic (https://www.communitycatspodcast.com/catclinicga) Follow & Review We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet.
