See all the Healthcasts at https://www.biobalancehealth.com/healthcast-blog The second set of myths about weight loss involve what we have been told by our federal government through the FDA and surgeon general, that is believed by most of us, but the motivation of the government is not generally for your well-being. Myth #7 Salt is bad for you, and you should limit your intake of salt to minimal amounts. A large study found that eating less than 3 grams of salt a day increases one's mortality by 25% when compared with moderate intake. It is a fact that salt is vital to life, this contradicts the AHA who preaches that a low salt diet is what is required for health. Myth #8. Replacing hormones at menopause, estradiol and testosterone, will cause women to gain weight. The advent of menopause changes a woman's metabolism and makes every woman in industrialized nations insulin resistant which slows their metabolism and causes women to gain fat and lose muscle which lowers the metabolic rate even lower because muscle mass burns 90% of our calories, and as it shrinks the Basic metabolic rate drops. The only way to counteract this cataclysmic change is to replace estradiol and testosterone in a bio-identical and non-oral delivery system (pellets, patches, topical applications and vaginal tabs. Even with sex hormone replacement, insulin resistance is Still a factor in weight gain, so a low carb, high protein diet and medical treatment with Metformin, or Wegovy or Mounjaro may be necessary to regain ideal weight after menopause. Myth #9 Milk products are bad for you, and you should take them out of your diet. Milk is not metabolized in the same way and does not have the same metabolic effects as milk products like yogurt, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, and all cheeses. The majority of Americans can tolerate, and even need milk products as a valuable source of protein. There is a small minority of people who cannot tolerate milk products, and even fewer who respond to milk products with inflammation. If you do not have GI symptoms, or joint aches when you eat milk products then you are not necessarily healthier to cut them out of your diet. Not only is milk good for most Americans, but it has been proven to decrease oxidative stress and inflammation….the very things it is accused of increasing! Myth #10 Skim milk is better for everyone than whole milk, and those people on a diet should opt for skim milk. This myth is born from the myth that we should eat low fat diets to lose weight. It is a fact that Whole milk has more fat than skim milk, but skim milk is higher in carbohydrate, is generally consumed in larger amounts and is not as satisfying as whole milk. Skim milk is 55% carbohydrate/43%protein/5% fat while whole milk is 50% fat/20% protein and 30% carbohydrate. Unfortunately, the processes we use to make milk safe to drink (Pasturization and Homogenation) remove the necessary enzymes (Lipases, and Lactase) that help humans tolerate lactose sugar in milk. The process of skimming milk removes the Vitamin D and A that are in unprocessed milk. If you can drink milk, choose smaller volumes of whole milk, not skimmed, if you like milk products like listed above, then add them to your high protein diet. A 64 million person- year study recently revealed that whole milk drinkers, milk product eater had a significant decrease in all-cause mortality. Skim milk drinkers did not have a decrease in all cause mortality. Myth #11 Cutting animal products in your diet will decrease your cholesterol and therefore prevent heart attacks. So why do we follow fads? I believe it is because we are human and we look for the easiest path to a goal, and easy diets appeal to most of us who want to lose weight, however losing weight is complex and involves a good medical based plan and a change in your lifestyle. Your plan should start with seeking the right kind of medical advice that fits the diet to your blood work, medical history and in some cases your genetics.

Episode: 2927 Dual Inheritance Theory: How our Genes and our Culture are co-evolving. Today, a very odd design feature.
FoodBev Media's Rafaela Sousa rounds up this week's food and beverage news, including Chr. Hansen, Novozymes merger approved, Kerry to acquire lactase enzyme business; UAE's first brewery to open in Abu Dhabi; and more.
For a significant portion of the world's population, baking is punctuated by the pain and discomfort of food intolerances. Lactose stands out as a particularly pesky ingredient in this regard. In this episode of the Xtalks Food Podcast, Sydney talks about Intoleran, a beacon of hope for those troubled by lactose. The Dutch brand, founded by Harmen Treep in 2008, recognized the immense gap in the market and created a line of lactase enzyme supplements tailored to cater to the lactose-intolerant community. She gives examples of other products for lactose intolerance on the market, including Lactaid and Almond Breeze, but explains why Intoleran is different. The standout feature of Intoleran is its user-friendly lactase drops. Instead of crafting an entire recipe around lactose-free ingredients or popping a pill beforehand, Intoleran users can integrate these drops into their regular baking process. By adding just five of these drops to a liter of milk, up to 80 percent of the lactose is neutralized within a day. The team commends this company for creating an innovative product that allows those with lactose intolerance to enjoy baked goods without sacrifices. Also in this episode, Sydney talks about why leading US plant-based food companies are considering the formation of a coalition to counteract successful marketing strategies like The Incredible, Edible Egg and Got Milk?. This initiative, slated for a 2024 launch, comes as a reaction to the negative press and targeted ads by Big Ag. The plant-based sector has weathered turbulent times over recent years, facing hits from multiple directions. Sales attacks, media criticisms and advertisement blitzes, many orchestrated by Big Ag and its affiliates, have all left marks. In response to Big Ag's strategies, Beyond Meat rolled out a campaign that subtly highlighted its commitment to farmers and countered misinformation surrounding plant-based proteins. Peter McGuinness, CEO of Impossible Foods, emphasized the need for better marketing from plant-based companies, given Big Ag's coordinated and resounding voice. The team wonders how the planned plant-based marketing coalition will go about marketing — will it counterattack Big Ag or promote its variety of products in a positive light?Read the full article here:Intoleran: A Revolutionary Solution for Lactose-Intolerant BakersBig Ag Challenges Spur Coalition Among Plant-Based CompaniesFor more food and beverage industry content, visit the Xtalks Vitals homepage.Follow Us on Social Media Twitter: @XtalksFood Instagram: @Xtalks Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Xtalks.Webinars/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/xtalks-webconferences YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/XtalksWebinars/featured

EPA Proposal To Require 60% Of New Cars To Be EVs by 2030 The EPA released a set of proposals this week that would cap C02 emissions for new cars. In order to meet the new stricter targets automakers would need to ramp up electric vehicle manufacturing substantially. By 2030, 60% of new cars would need to be electric. Ira talks with Casey Crownhart, Climate Reporter for the MIT Technology Review, about the new EPA emissions proposals and other top science news of the week including predictions of a bad mosquito season and turtles basking in the moonlight. Lactose Intolerance May Have A Lot To Do With Your Gut Microbiome In the animal kingdom, it's not normal to drink milk past infancy. It's even more rare to consume milk from another mammal. But throughout history, humans have used dairy farming as a way to get calories and nutrition from creatures like cows, goats, and sheep. And a big perk: dairy products taste good. Evidence of dairying goes back to the early Neolithic era. Traces have been found in the historical record in Europe, Asia, and Africa, in ancient teeth and pottery. Lactase persistence, or the ability to consume dairy into adulthood, developed alongside this burgeoning industry. But here's the catch: a large part of the population is still lactose intolerant, either from childhood or developed in adulthood. It's estimated that about a third of the U.S. population is lactose intolerant, with a higher chance among certain ethnic and racial groups. There's a lot to learn about the origins of lactose persistence and lactose intolerance, and much of that knowledge comes from the gut microbiome. Joining Ira to talk about this is Christina Warinner, assistant professor of anthropology at Harvard University, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

Our interview today is with Kristen Gremillion, PhD — Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Ohio State University. She wrote a book in 2011 called Ancestral Appetites, looking at the archeological evidence and ethnographic knowledge we have about human diet throughout our species' history. We love interviewing folks like Kristen because deep historical context sets the stage for clearer thought and makes it abundantly obvious just how profoundly confused we've become about what we should or could be eating. Kristen's perspective is refreshing because she isn't taking a dogmatic approach — for instance, she doesn't believe that there's some pure, pre-agricultural or traditional diet we should be adhering to. In fact, she's quick to point out, both in her book and here, that humans have successfully added novel foods into our diet throughout our species' timeline. In some cases, like lactase persistence, our bodies physically change in response to novel foods, a testament to the success of these novel dietary changes. Lactase persistence is the adaptation to dairy consumption that has led some populations to continue the production of lactase into adulthood — that's the enzyme that breaks down the sugars in milk — rather than ceasing production after weaning. We often say someone is lactose intolerant, as if this was a disease or aberration. However, lactose intolerance in adults is the human biological norm. Lactase persistence is a mutation that allows some of us to easily digest milk products as adults — those of us that can digest dairy… are the mutants. In other words, sometimes our bodies respond favorably to new foods. So, we shouldn't be quick to dismiss novel ingredients. We've been discovering them for millennia. But, Kristen is also wary of a Soylent Green type of dystopian future diet, the kind of thing that some folks see on the nutritional horizon. Her longtime study of human diet seems to lead to a preference for foods that are recognizable as foods. Daniel and Kristen discuss a bit of that in this interview today. Not just where human diets were and are, but where they are headed too. It's an interesting conversation in a continuing dialogue with those who've made this field of inquiry their profession. We're of the opinion that the more we understand about our history, the clearer the path forward will be. And this will become ever more important as we, a rather unique but also very confused, species of ape, grapple with an incredibly uncertain future. In the last few decades, food wasn't something many people had to think a lot about, at least in the more opulent nations of the world. But that is changing, and it's poised to change a whole lot more in the coming decade. One way or another, humanity is gearing up to come face to face with our food and food supply. There's no way around it. And knowing where we've been might just be incredibly important… as we move forward… into this brave new world. Evolution of The Carnivore Diet, Issues on Keto Diet: Maybe Electrolyte Imbalance?, Weird Reaction To Beef & Lamb?, Do All Cells React to Light?, Electrolyte/Magnesium Sensitivity? Make your health an act of rebellion. Join The Healthy Rebellion Please Subscribe and Review: Apple Podcasts | RSS Submit your questions for the podcast here Show Notes: News topic du jour: Obesity and disease tied to dramatic dietary changes The 'mismatch hypothesis' argues that our bodies evolved to digest the foods that our ancestors ate, and that human bodies will struggle and largely fail to metabolize a radically new set of foods. This intuitive idea is hard to test directly, but the Turkana, a pastoralist population in remote Kenya, present a natural experiment: genetically homogenous populations whose diets stretch across a lifestyle gradient from relatively 'matched' to extremely 'mismatched' with their recent evolutionary history. Enter the Turkana -- a subsistence-level, pastoralist population from a remote desert in northwest Kenya. In the 1980s, an extreme drought coupled with the discovery of oil nearby led to rapid transformation of the region. Large segments of the population abandoned their nomadic lifestyle, some to live in villages and others in cities. Traditional Turkana still rely on livestock -- dromedary camels, zebu cattle, fat-tailed sheep, goats, and donkeys -- for subsistence, while Turkana living in cities have switched to diets that are much higher in carbohydrates and processed foods . This is a trend that is widely observed across the world, a result of increasing globalization, even in remote communities. "We realized that we had the opportunity to study the effect of transitioning away from a traditional lifestyle, relying on almost 80% animal byproducts -- a diet extremely protein-rich and rich in fats, with very little to no carbohydrates -- to a mostly carbohydrate diet," said Julien Ayroles, an assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and LSI who is the senior researcher on the new paper. "This presented an unprecedented opportunity: genetically homogenous populations whose diets stretch across a lifestyle gradient from relatively 'matched' to extremely 'mismatched' with their recent evolutionary history." "But Turkana who had moved to cities exhibited poor cardio-metabolic health, with much higher levels of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular illness and high blood pressure. The health metrics also showed that the longer Turkana had spent living in the city, the less healthy they tended to be, with life-long city dwellers experiencing the greatest risk of cardiovascular disease." 1. Evolution of The Carnivore Diet [15:52] Bradley says: I love your podcast, I love the open minded science based approach towards diet and nutrition. I’m a graduate of Mark Sisson’s Primal Health Coaching course and am I huge nutrition nerd. I’ve tried vegetarian, vegan, and finally got amazing results from primal eating. I’ve always leaned more towards the low carb mainly animal product end of the spectrum on Primal and have been listening to carnivore podcasts almost exclusively for the past few months. I do have a comment that maybe you could help me understand. I bought The Carnivore Code by Paul Saladino and I love the book and his points on plant self defense mechanisms and it makes sense. Maybe I missed something but if we evolved to become more animal based wouldn’t it also make sense that we’ve now evolved back to being able to eat some plants? Maybe there hasn’t been enough time for that evolution? Isn’t being able to drink milk without the gassy affects an evolution too though? I appreciate any insights https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactase_persistence#:~:text=The%20first%20identified%20genetic%20variant,C%2FT*%E2%88%9213910.&text=Other%20alleles%20associated%20with%20lactase,T%2FC*3712%20in. 2. Issues on Keto Diet: Maybe Electrolyte Imbalance? [23:53] James says: Hello. My name is James and I am a 30 year old male and I live in Charlottesville, VA. I decided to meet with a functional medicine doctor/ nutritionist about 10 weeks ago. During my initial consultation I was at 188lbs with ~24% body fat. I also got my blood work done that I can send for reference. My goals are mainly focused on developing good nutrition habits to feel good and maintain a healthy body composition. I also had consisting gas/bloating issues. For the first 2 weeks I followed a paleo diet focused on getting adequate protein from meat sources (hand sized portion with lunch/dinner). I also followed intermittent fasting M-F eating from 12-8. For the next 6 weeks I practiced intermittent fasting during the week and followed a somewhat ketogenic diet ( 136g protien, 26g carbs, and 146g fat). During this time I was also taking magnesium supplement/ fish oil at night and vitamin D/ floramyces during lunch. I was also practicing CrossFit regularly about 5-6 times a week. At week 6 I did a long workout in the morning in a fasted state. Post workout I felt dizzy/weak and my legs were just cramping constantly. I was at the point where I felt like I was going to faint. My nutritionist said this was likely an electrolyte imbalance. He recommended and electrolyte supplement pre/post workout and increasing magnesium on training days. Also trying to eat low carb vegetables more to get natural sources of potassium. I did this and I am still having some issues. This past week I hav had some hot/cold sensations in legs/feet with some hamstring cramping. Yesterday I was tired of this feelings and I tried eating some fruit through carbs. This seemed to resolve my symptoms fairly quickly. Thinking about introducing carbs back into my diet. Right now down like 8 pounds but just want to feel a little more Normal again. 3. Weird Reaction To Beef & Lamb? [29:32] Kim says: Hi Nicki and Robb, Your podcast and books are life savers. I am so, so grateful for what you do to educate! I had been vegan/vegetarian for years but after processing the grief from suddenly losing my mom I found myself completely depleted, losing my mind, and in extreme physical pain. Through tireless research on my own over the last 3 years I have found my way to thriving health by completely changing what I eat. I believe the years as a vegan almost killed me! From this whole experience I am acutely aware of how my body reacts to different foods. I have had to eliminate all estrogenic foods but now completely enjoy my new diet based on plenty of low carb green leafy vegetables, cruciferous vegetables, some types of seeds and nuts and of course pasture raised meats and eggs and wild caught fish. My question is about a weird reaction I have to beef and lamb. When I eat fish, chicken or pork I do fine but when I eat even the highest quality grass-fed beef or lamb I have the same reaction that I do to highly estrogenic foods, anxiety and hyper awake (sleep issues). Is there anything in the amino acid profile of beef and lamb that is substantially different from that of chicken and pork that could be causing this? Is there something I could eat along with beef and lamb to counteract this reaction in my body? Ideally I would like to eat be able to eat beef and lamb over pork and chicken so I need to figure this out. Any thoughts you have would be most gratefully received. Thank you again for all that you do. All the best, Kim 4. Do All Cells React to Light? [36:25] Mariessa says: Hi, Robb! Regarding the blue light glasses: the book Lights Out noted that all (many? More than just eyes) cells react to the light if I'm remembering correctly. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks, Mariessa Circadian Clocks in Human Red Blood Cells https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3040566/ 5. Electrolyte/Magnesium Sensitivity? [41:24] I have found that if I have more than 1 packet of LMNT a day, I get a bit of digestive trouble probably due to the magnesium. I seem to be fairly sensitive to magnesium in all forms. Any tips? Thank you for all that you do! Sponsor: This episode is sponsored by Joovv. Broad Spectrum Digestive Enzymes Children on the autism spectrum have difficulty digesting their food properly. This means they do not absorb the nutrients from the foods they eat. This starves their brain of what it needs to function properly. Broad spectrum enzymes assist in the digestion of many foods including protein, carbohydrates, fats, and fiber. Enzymes are naturally produced by the body unless the GI tract is not working properly. If so, digestion and absorption of nutrients and many other factors are effected. Enzymes can be very helpful when taken just before or with meals to help break down food particles, proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. The enzyme known as DPPIV helps break down the large proteins in wheat known as gluten, and casein in dairy. Enzymes for Therapeutic use When enzymes are taken away from food they can be helpful as little garbage collectors in the sense of cleaning up the toxic debris from various viral and bacterial issues. Benefits Beyond Digestion Enzymes can be extremely helpful with the sensitive digestion needs of those with autism, ADHD, allergies, and more. By improving digestion there can be a reduction in inflammation in the GI tract, therefore, better overall health. Keeping the gut healthy is crucial. The gut has receptors that make neurotransmitters for the brain such as serotonin which effects mood, appetite, and sleep, and GABA which acts to calm nerve function. Enzymes also act as little garbage collectors cleaning up toxic debris . From using enzymes parents report better concentration, increased language abilities, improved digestion, and behavior. Help with positive gut bacteria and phenols There are beneficial microorganisms in the gut that are built from fiber foods such as vegetables. If the GI tract is compromised and weak it can have trouble digesting fiber. Additionally, Phenols are a compound found in many healthy foods including vegetables and dark colored fruit. These are healthy foods but our kids may be sensitive to them. One enzyme formula that can be helpful with both fiber digestion and phenols is No-Phenol from Houston-Enzymes. They come in capsules and chewable form. Some Common Enzymes are: • Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) breaks down casomorphin (from casein) and gluteomorphins (from gluten) • Proteases break down proteins • Lactase breaks down lactose (found in dairy) • Amylase for starch (carbohydrate) digestion • Alpha-galactosidase breaks down beans and other fiber-rich foods • Xylanase helps digest fruits and vegetables (phenolic foods) • Beta-glucanase for fiber-rich vegetables and grains • Lipase breaks down lipids or fats • Bromelain and papain are enzymes derived from pineapple. They break down proteins. Note: Some people exhibit sensitivities to fruit or citrus, so watch for signs of this from your child. Cellulase may interfere with some time-released, cellulose-based medications. Ask your doctor or check your labels for hydroxypropyl cellulose, or hypromellose. Some products come as “cellulose-free”. Quality Products Broad spectrum digestive enzymes are taken just prior to eating a meal for their assistance in digestion. This helps the body absorb nutrients for better health and well being. There are several great products available such as Trienza by Houston-Enzymes. This formula has the added benefit of DPP-IV, a specific enzyme that breaks down the larger proteins in dairy and wheat products that can injure the gut lining and create toxins in the blood which make their way to the brain. This often triggers an allergic response to these foods. Trienza also comes in a chewable form. The size of the meal often determines the dosage. Start slowly with half the recommended dosage and work your way up to the full amount over a 12-14 day period. The beauty of broad spectrum enzymes is that they assist with so many different types of foods. We do not always know exactly what disturbs our digestion. This way we cover a multitude of possibilities with one product. Radio Show interview Please listen to my radio show interview with Dr. Devon Houston of Houston-Enzymes. It is show #44. He then was awarded a B.S. degree in Medical Science in 1980 and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine in 1987. Dr. Houston’s graduate work focused on how the aging process affected certain enzyme systems. Click Here for more details.
Today's podcast is a two-part special on ancestral eating, an ancestral diet and healing autoimmune conditions using an ancestral approach. In the first part of the show, I teach you how to determine how you should be eating based on how your ancestors ate. Next, I turn it over to my guest Dr. Michael Smith for a special lecture from him on his specific protocol for healing autoimmune conditions using an ancestral eating approach. Dr. Smith, who first appeared on my show in the episode "" hails from the First Nations in Canada, grew up on the diet of his indigenous ancestors eating wild organ meats from the animals he hunted and feasting from the wild salmon that he caught. He learned many of the medicine traditions and the “Medicine Wheel” of the First Nations people. He studied Martial Arts and taught Canadian Military self defense techniques, and along the way, his Martial Arts teacher took him aside to say to tell him that he was “more of a healer than a fighter”. His teacher then began to teach him the Oral Tradition of Classical Oriental Science, or better known as Traditional Chinese Medicine. Michael is now a huge pillar in the healing community of Nelson, BC. For example, restaurants in the Nelson area will produce a special menu at certain times of year when he holds the event of cleansing season. He's helped with bringing Medical Cannabis dispensaries to the city and produces supplements paired with Cannabis Medicine sold there. You often see him ushering in folks at open public sweat lodge ceremonies with burning of sage. Michael is an author, speaker, professional martial artist, teacher and clinician, and a respected integrative medicine pioneer with over 20 years experience. In his Nelson, British Columbia practice he combines functional medicine and evolutionary nutrition with the ancient wisdom and vast experience of Traditional Chinese medicine. His primary focus in medicine is complex chronic auto-immune diseases (as a patient, Michael had lived with both Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis for well over 20 years). He is a co-founder of the prestigious Academy of Classical Oriental Sciences, the first five year full time doctorate level training program in TCM in Canada. He is also the primary developer of Neuro-Somatic Therapy, a hands on approach to reducing the way people embody distress, illness and trauma. As a Martial Artist, Michael has been training for almost 40 years. He has had the good fortune to train with some of the highest level teachers in the Western world, including a teacher of the late Bruce Lee. After training prison guards, police officers and members of both military and paramilitary organizations, Michael decided to leave traditional martial arts and develop his own approach to resolving physical violence. He has taught this approach, called Applied Combatives, for over 20 years. If you read this week's article "", then you are aware that I'm not a big fan of a myopic "one-size-fits-all" approach to diets. And yet, despite the enormous amount of biochemical individuality that exists from person to person, there is still a plethora of diet books published each year (particularly close to swimsuit season or the New Year) that promise to be the de facto final solution for everything from fat loss to banishing acne to beating cravings and building muscle when, in fact, the same ketogenic diet that helped your neighbor shed twenty pounds can result in rampant inflammation, brain fog and oxidized cholesterol for you. The same could be said for a vegan diet, a carnivore diet or many of the other currently popular eating approaches. In today's podcast, Part 1 of a 2 part series on customizing your diet to you, you're going to discover more about the concept of biochemical individuality, along with how to test your body to determine the perfect diet for you, and a range of dietary options to choose from that have been vetted by yours truly. Enjoy! During this solosode discussion, you'll discover: -The concept of biochemical individuality...7:35 Book: Biochemical Individuality by Roger Williams No such thing as an "average" person. Nutrition and environment can affect our outcome. Some people do not need to supplement Vitamin C, A, Riboflavin, etc. Others are resistant to things such as Vitamin D; taking the recommended amount damages their system. What worked for someone else may be damaging for you. Ketogenic Diet I used this when racing in Ironman triathlons; I still use it for days I need endurance. Some are high in cholesterol, high liver enzymes. Familial hypercholesterolemia; negative response to high intake of fats. Low amount of Alpha-Linolenic acid (ALA) is converted into usable DHA or EPA Elongation of Omega 6 fatty acids Thrifty gene hypothesis (James Neal in 1962): Why humans build fat mass Some people possess genes that cause them to accumulate fat faster than others. FTO and PPRA genes are responsible for storing fatty acids. Consider a low fat, or plant-based diet vs. a ketogenic if you have these genes. Book: Wired to Eat by Rob Wolf -Differences in methylation between individuals...30:20 Meat eaters: most meat has high amounts of methionine, which is a high methyl donor Methylation occurs when a methyl group is taken from one compound or molecule and is transferred to another. If you're undermethylated, you would benefit from a high intake of muscular meats. Folate acts as a serotonin reuptake promoter. Good for undermethylators. Overmethylation: last thing you need is a bunch of meat for every meal. Consume protein, but don't be an extreme carnivore. -How to eat according to your ancestry...35:05 Northern European: Access to fish, Vitamin D Mexicans, Hispanics, Chinese: More folate rich foods, leafy greens. Japanese, Continental Europeans: High starch consuming Lactase persistence gene If of European descent, more likely to be lactose intolerant. Digestive enzymes might be the most overlooked, underappreciated part of a good nutrition plan. Even the healthiest diet does little if you don't have good digestive health. Unfortunately, most people don't think about using them unless they have issues with their gut health. As you'll see, they're essential for more than breaking down the food you eat. They can play a role in weight loss, muscle growth, and aging well. Not surprisingly, they're part of my Foundational Five. About 20% of the US population is known to have a digestive issue. That's about 60-70 million people. The percentage continues to grow in the US and across the world. Symptoms can be as subtle as gas and bloating to more extreme symptoms like constant diarrhea or intermittent pain. Exercise, increased core body temperature, injury, stress, and certain diseases can compromise enzyme production. Processed foods may deplete enzyme activity and availability. Digestive enzyme insufficiency may contribute to: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)hyperthyroidismCeliac diseaseCrohn's disease Excessive exercise and diets high in processed foods contribute to a lack of enzymes. What are Digestive Enzymes? Enzymes speed up chemical reactions in the body. You use more than 5000 different enzymes every day. Most of those enzymes are metabolic enzymes, responsible for everything from your thoughts to the thickness of your blood. A relatively small group of your 5000 enzymes convert the food you eat to nutrients that fuel and build your body. Without digestive enzymes, you wouldn't break down protein, fat, and carbohydrates, and your foods would pass through you undigested. Along the way, the food would destroy your intestines' lining, cause immune reactions, and cause inflammation. Nutritionally, you'd starve, no matter how much food you ate. Digestive enzymes fall into three different categories, based on the macronutrient they act on: Proteases and peptidases: Convert protein to peptides and amino acids. They also act on other parts of the body to support normal immune function, inflammation levels, tissue repair, and blood viscosity.Common proteases and peptidases: Bromelain, Pancreatin, Papain, Peptidase, Protease, TrypsinCarbohydrases: Convert carbohydrates to glucose and fructose.Common carbohydrases: Alpha-galactosidase, Amylase, Cellulase, Diastase, Glucoamylase, Invertase, Lactase, PhytaseLipases: Convert fat to fatty acids.Common lipases: Lingual Lipase, Gastric Lipase, Pancrealipase Proteases and Peptidases (Proteolytic Enzymes) Proteases (also known as proteolytic enzymes) act on protein in the digestive system. However, they also affect many other areas of the body. The average healthy adult breaks down 250-300 grams of protein throughout the body every day. Your body does this to replace damaged or aged tissues with new ones. Proteolytic enzymes play an essential role in this process. They also help maintain healthy inflammation levels, modulate pain, and support normal immune function. Because the body can produce a limited number of proteolytic enzymes, demand can exceed supply. Following an injury or extreme physical stress, proteolytic enzymes can be directed to the tissue repair, leaving the digestive system without enough to complete digestion. This could be why athletes often deal with digestive issues. If they don't get extra proteolytic enzymes through food or supplements, their available enzymes take part in tissue repair, leaving them short on what they need for proper digestion. On the other hand, in some people, enzymes are directed to digestion, leaving the rest of their body short. In this case, inflammation could get out of hand, or tissues and joints could get irritated. When supplemented in the diet, proteolytic enzymes have been shown to reduce stiffness and exercise-related soreness.* European practitioners regularly recommend proteolytic enzymes to support overall healt...
