Dr. Edward DeLong is a Professor in the Department of Oceanography at the University of Hawai'i Mānoa as well as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at MIT. Research in Ed's lab brings together a variety of disciplines to study microbial communities in the ocean. He is interested in their ecology, evolution, biochemistry, genomics, and their impacts on marine systems. Particularly of interest for Ed are the microscopic organisms that are the primary producers or “forests of the ocean” responsible for releasing oxygen and serving as food for other organisms in marine food chains. When he's not working, Ed loves to be out in nature. He enjoys spending time outside with his family, hiking, kayaking, and snorkeling in the beautiful coral reefs near his house. Ed has also taken up yoga to help him stay limber and relaxed. Ed received his B.S. in Bacteriology from the University of California, Davis and his Ph.D. in Marine Biology from the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. Afterwards, he conducted postdoctoral research at Indiana University. Ed has worked as a research scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, a faculty member at the University of California, Santa Barbara, a research scientist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, and a faculty member at MIT before accepting his current position in Hawai'i. His honors and achievements include the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award, the DuPont Young Faculty Award, the Apple Bioinformatics Cluster Award, the Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky Medal of the European Geosciences Union, the Proctor and Gamble Award in Applied and Environmental Microbiology, American Society for Microbiology D.C. The Chill MomBoss - Build a Profitable Business from Home while Raising Kids

Being a mom is the greatest thing I've ever done. And it mixes with other wonderful things - like running my businesses from home, helping women make their lives better, and sharing my knowledge of business, entrepreneurship and life. I've never seen staying home with my kids as a sacrifice because if you think of what you do as a sacrifice, you've already set yourself up for failure. Because as soon as you use words like sacrifice, you transform yourself in to a martyr. The all sacrificing martyr - and no one recovers from being a martyr. That identity creates a box for you to live in. Have you ever made yourself into a martyr? What did you tell yourself to avoid changing? Sunk cost is the "perceived" cost that makes us refuse to step away from something we've spent time or money on, even though that's the sensible thing to do. It is also the reason most entrepreneurs are "stuck" in the business. KEY POINTS:The mentor/mentee relationship is critical in advancing medicine and technology. Significant technological developments in bone health imaging help predict fractures. As the density of bone goes down, the risk of fracture increases. CurveBeam AI Medical Director - Endocrinology Prof. Ego Seeman recently sat down with Vinti Singh, CurveBeam AI's Marketing Director, to discuss the future of bone health imaging.Prof. Seeman is a Professor and Endocrinologist in the Departments of Medicine and Endocrinology, Austin Health, University of Melbourne. He was recently awarded the Gideon A. Rodan Excellence in Mentorship Award at The American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) 2022 Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas.Dr. Seeman said his own mentors have played an integral role in shaping his career. He first became interested in bone and mineral metabolism during his post-doctoral fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester under Professor B Larry Riggs.“I learned so much," Prof. Seeman said of his experience at Mayo. "I made wonderful friends that I still have today, and I recommend to every young person to move out of their local town and get into the world.”Prof. Seeman also discussed the current paradigm of bone health imaging, and where analysis based on high resolution peripheral quantitative CT imaging holds promise for better detection of those patients at risk for a fragility fracture."The technology is such that the radiation exposure has been minimized and allows us to measure the very fine architecture...of the bone," Prof. Seeman said.

Stefanie R. Brown, MD is the Internal Medicine Residency Program Director at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Section Chief for the Med-Peds and Pediatric Hospital Medicine. Dr. Brown completed her medical school from the University of Cincinnati, pursued a residency in Med-Peds from Rutgers New Jersey followed by a chief resident year. Prior to this role, Dr. Brown has been the program director of the Med-Peds Residency at the University of Miami as well as the Assistant Dean for Diversity and Multicultural Affairs. She is the recipient of a number of awards including the Women in Academic Medicine Excellence in Mentorship Award. Today, Dr. Stefanie Brown shares an analogy that a past mentor taught her about achieving excellence: In medicine, there are two pies that define your life.  The first contains the things you are responsible for. The slices are made up of your job and your responsibilities, whether it be clinical, administrative, research, or teaching. But the second pie is full of the things you really like to do: The slices in this pie contain all the things you are passionate about. The key to success—and excellence—is getting these two pies to intersect as much as possible. The more these pies overlap, the more we will accomplish with less stress and effort. Pearls of Wisdom: 1. Moving from good to great is about knowing where your strengths are, and knowing what you need to improve on. From good to great, comes greatness to excellence, then excellence to amazing. And when you are able to pay it forward to others…that is when you move from amazing to inspiring. 2. If you're not at the table, you're on the menu. As residents, we have the opportunity to be in the environments where decisions are made, we can sit in on committees, and learn from the best so that we will be more prepared in the future to hold our own seats at the table. 3. In medicine, there are two pies. The first one contains your job responsibilities. And the second one is about what you are passionate about. The goal is to get these two pies to intersect: The better it will be for us, and the less effort it takes to achieve excellence.

Two tips for overcoming challenges: First, don't withdraw into your comfort zone. Second, Don't be afraid to advocate for yourself. 3. A great formula for moving from the good to the great is full integrity plus persistence. 4. Being a physician, although a challenging profession, is a privilege. Appreciate the beauty in small, everyday successes so you don't live a one-dimensional life.

I got a call one day from a recruiter saying ‘we’re looking to hire.’ I paused and looked at my situation and realized that I was in an environment where there were no female partners — in the electromechanical side of the house — and I was a litigator, living the litigator life: is this really what I want to do with the rest of my career? The call from the recruiter came at an opportune time and got me thinking about the different paths to take my career on. The idea of working with a single client, being embedded in the business, helping solve those business problems really intrigued me, so I decided to give it a chance.” “It was one of those times where I almost didn’t take the job because I was pregnant at the time, and my husband had left his big company job to join his first startup, and we were remodeling our house — a complete teardown; we were building it from the ground up. So I got the call from Intuit and I thought, should I really be taking yet another thing on right now? Is this the time to take on a major challenge as the company's first Chief IP Counsel? The lesson that I learned then and have learned continuously over my life is that opportunities don’t always arrive in your life at the best times, and in my life, it seems that the best opportunities have come at the most inopportune times!” “When I was interviewing… I actually made the decision to tell her when she was making the oral offer… I told her ‘I think I’m pregnant, is that okay?’ It turns out I found out I was pregnant that day. And she gave me the most amazing answer which was: “Thanks for telling me, the job’s still gonna be here.’” “I was a summer associate at a law firm where I worked on a project with a female partner and she was — let’s just say I got a lot of feedback on the project. At the end of that meeting, she said to me: ‘Look, I didn’t have it easy making it to partner, and I’m not going to make it easy for you either.’ I was so taken aback, and that has stuck with me and drives me to do whatever I can to help people.”   More about Anirma Gupta Anirma Gupta at Tanium Anirma Gupta on LinkedIn Anirma Gupta on Twitter ChIPs Board Director Emeritus and co-founder Awards: National Diversity Council 2018: 50 Most Powerful Women in Technology The Recorder 2015: Women Leaders in Tech Law Inside Counsel Magazine ‘R3-100 Roundup’ 2014 and 2015: a list of 100 women most likely to become general counsel in the Fortune 500 The Recorder 2014: Women Leaders in Tech Law South Asian Bar Association of Northern California 2014: Mentorship Award for mentoring efforts in the Bay Area legal community Intuit CEO’s Excellence in Leadership: Received in recognition of results achieved on building Intuit’s patent portfolio Best Bay Area Corporate Counsel Awards 2010: Best IP Counsel

You may think that postpartum depression covers all aspects of perinatal mental health issues that new mothers face. The fact is that there are other kinds of mood changes, some that are talked about and some that are relatively unknown and uncommon. Today’s show focuses on one specific problem that some mothers experience: it’s called D-Mer, which stands for Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex.   Heidi Koss, MA, LMHC, is a psychotherapist in private practice in Redmond, WA. She specializes in perinatal (pregnancy and postpartum) mood disorders, birth trauma, sexual abuse, and parent adjustment issues. Heidi has been the WA State Coordinator for Postpartum Support International www.postpartum.net, and has volunteered for over 20 years with Perinatal Support Washington www.perinatalsupport.org. She served as past board member for PATTCh – the Prevention and Treatment of Traumatic Childbirth, www.pattch.org. Heidi is active leading trainings for clinicians on appropriate assessment and treatment options for perinatal mood disorders and birth trauma. She leads monthly clinical consult groups mentoring mental health care providers to develop their competency and expertise in perinatal mental health issues.   Heidi was a co-founder of the Northwest Association for Postpartum Support (NAPS, www.napsdoulas.com) a postpartum doula organization as well as the recipient of the Doulas of North America (DONA) Penny Simkin Doula Spirit and Mentorship Award. Prior to her psychotherapy career, Heidi was a Postpartum Doula and Certified Lactation Educator for 12 years.   Show Highlights:   Heidi’s work as a mother and perinatal mental health therapist and lactation educator: ”Helping moms with mind, body, and breast” Why D-Mer is not often talked about and often misunderstood What D-Mer is: Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex. It occurs when milk onset/letdown happens and lasts a few seconds or minutes D-Mer is a strange emotional phenomenon with negative emotions of sadness, dread, despair, nervousness, anxiety, and irritability D-Mer can be severe, with fleeting suicidal thoughts and urges for self-harm The biochemical connection is with two hormones, dopamine and oxytocin, in which they “go rogue,” misfire, or become overactive No studies have shown who is more predisposed to experience D-Mer For some women, D-Mer symptoms ease as the baby ages, but some have no change until weaning D-Mer symptoms might be harder to treat and control in women who already have a diagnosed anxiety or depression disorder What D-Mer is NOT: nausea, postpartum depression, anxiety, breastfeeding aversion---”It’s NOT the mom’s fault.” The best treatment is to educate women about D-Mer How some women can “talk themselves through” D-Mer episodes Ideas for easing symptoms include rewiring the stress hormones, making positive associations with breastfeeding, and positive touch (massage) General good habits for life will ease D-Mer symptoms, like mindfulness, meditation, good sleep and self-care, reduced stress, and managing blood sugar fluctuations To target dopamine, nursing locations should be aesthetically pleasing to make a pleasant mental and physical experience for the mother Some women find D-Mer intolerable and decide to wean, while some can deal with the symptoms and continue to breastfeed Wellbutrin works for some women to ease the symptoms How to find support: Find a lactation consultant and pursue therapy with a perinatal mental health therapist   Resources: www.d-mer.org www.heidikoss.com Email Heidi: heidi@heidikoss.com

Dr. Edward DeLong is a Professor in the Department of Oceanography at the University of Hawai’i Manoa as well as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at MIT. When he’s not working, Ed loves to be out in nature. He enjoys spending time outside with his family, hiking, kayaking, and snorkeling in the beautiful coral reefs near his house. Ed has also taken up yoga to help him stay limber and relaxed. Research in Ed’s lab brings together a variety of disciplines to study microbial communities in the ocean. Ed received his B.S. in Bacteriology from the University of California, Davis and his Ph.D. in Marine Biology from the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. Afterwards, he conducted postdoctoral research at Indiana University. Ed has worked as a research scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, a faculty member at the University of California, Santa Barbara, a research scientist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, and a faculty member at MIT before accepting his current position in Hawai’i.
