Ten years ago, international companies typically needed to monitor national security developments only if they were doing business with a U.S. government agency or operating in higher risk jurisdictions or sectors such as military or dual-use goods. Over the past decade, however, Western governments—led by the United States—have expanded the use of sanctions, export controls, import restrictions and investment laws to more jurisdictions and more sectors, requiring nearly every multinational company to be attuned to and anticipate developments in these laws and regulations, including those seeking to prevent espionage, theft of trade secrets, cyber attacks and other similar threats. In addition, the governments of nations such as Russia and China have enacted an array of sanctions, export and other control measures, which can subject multinational companies to highly challenging situations with conflicting sanctions regimes. In this environment, companies and financial institutions must address a range of national security risks and considerations when establishing or executing their business operations, legal decision-making and compliance programs. In this podcast, former federal prosecutors Sharon Cohen Levin, Nicky Friedlander, Tony Lewis and Amanda Houle discuss major developments in national security enforcement, including the Department of Justice's increased focus on this area. Sharon led the Money Laundering and Asset Forfeiture Unit in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York for two decades; Nicky is a former Chief of the Complex Frauds and Cybercrime Unit in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York; Tony was the Deputy Chief of the Terrorism and Export Crimes Section in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California; and Amanda was Co-Chief of the National Security & International Narcotics Unit in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.

A New Zealand-made drink company has been forced to publish a notice saying it's made some 'unsubstantiated' claims. The Ministry for Primary Industries has confirmed the notice the company had put online was compulsory, after an investigation into its labelling and advertising. Co-founder and co-chief executive Angus Brown says it's tough to balance complex, emerging science with health codes. A Canton native and Ohio State University graduate, Corrine Burger started her career with accounting giant Deloitte in Phoenix, a location she chose in part for the warm weather. She eventually returned home to the Buckeye State, though, taking on a variety of positions with the financial institution we today know as JPMorgan Chase & Co., the country's largest bank and an employer of nearly 20,000 people in Central Ohio. As she advanced in her career, one of the biggest challenges Burger faced was figuring out how to break out of the accounting sphere and into the wider world of opportunities at the firm. Eventually, she said, she realized one action that could help get her where she wanted to go. "When we had some big problems that needed to be solved, I raised my hand," said Burger, who now serves as chief control manager, managing director and Columbus location leader for the financial giant. Burger's willingness to take on problems is perhaps best-evidenced by her work on JPMorgan's acquisition of Washington Mutual during the 2008 financial crisis. Today’s episode is with herbalist and author Ellen Evert Hopman. She's going to teach us all about the Doctrine of Signatures. This class was taught at the 2017 New England Women’s Herbal Gathering in New Hampshire. Learn an ancient plant classification system that was developed in a time before most people could read. Did the plant grow in sun or shade? In damp soil or in a dry area? The shape of a leaf, the color of a 9 flower, the taste of an herb were all guides to which body system or organ the plant was appropriate for. Although you'll learn a lot in this episode, you should look into her book: Secret Medicines from Your Garden - Plants for Healing, Spirituality and Magic She covers the Doctrine of Signatures along with a lot of other herbal and magical concepts.  To find out more about Ellen, you can visit her online at elleneverthopman.com. Amergin by The Dolmen THE DOLMEN … A Storm has washed over Europe. Every so often, a band comes out of the Celtic heartlands, takes the musical audience by the throat and shakes it hard. And guess what, it’s about to happen again. The ever popular Celtic Folk-Rock scene in the UK has served up a real rough diamond, THE DOLMEN, a gig-hardened bunch of piratical rebel-rousers from the clan-lands, whose music and live performances have become the stuff of tribal legend, being both unique and very addictive. In 2011 they take this raw energy to mainland Europe. We are very proud to bring you one of their powerful, atavistic earlier tracks, Amergin from their album Songs from the Druids of Stonehenge. You can find out more about The Dolmen on their website at The Dolmen or on our Contributor Page.   Get EXTRA content in the Celtic Myth Podshow App for iOS, Android & Windows Contact Us: You can leave us a message by using the Speakpipe Email us at: garyandruth@celticmythpodshow.com.
