In the spring of 2026, Israel and the United States conducted joint offensive military operations against Iran: coordinating targets, dividing airspace, and operating with a degree of integration that has no precedent in the history of the alliance. The operation significantly degraded Iran's military capabilities, and it marked what many analysts regard as a genuine turning point, not just in the regional balance of power, but in the nature of the American-Israeli relationship itself. For decades, that relationship had been structured as a powerful patron supporting a dependent client. What the Iran war suggested to some observers is that Israel has—at least in part—outgrown that structure. That is the backdrop for a debate that is now live in both Jerusalem and Washington: what should American military aid to Israel look like when the current memorandum of understanding between the two countries expires in 2028? The U.S. currently provides Israel with approximately $3.5 billion annually in grants, earmarked for the purchase of American-made military equipment—an arrangement that dates to the aftermath of the Yom Kippur War and that has been renewed, and periodically enlarged, ever since. For most of that period, the case for the aid seemed self-evident. First the Arab states, and then Iran and its proxies, were actively threatening Israel's existence. American military and diplomatic support was an indispensable buttress of Israel's security. Whether that case remains self-evident today, in the wake of a war that has significantly diminished Iranian capabilities, is now a serious question being debated by Israelis and Americans of good faith, with thoughtful arguments on multiple sides. In this episode, Mosaic's editor Jonathan Silver speaks with a proud Israeli patriot who has been making the case for ending American aid for some time. Raphael BenLevi is a senior fellow at the Misgav Institute for National Security and Zionist Strategy, director of the Churchill Program for Statecraft and Security at the Argaman Institute in Jerusalem, a reserve officer in the IDF intelligence branch, and an occasional contributor to Mosaic. On Wednesday's Mark Levin Show, the global and especially American situation is very dark, grave, and worsening daily. The Democrat Party no longer offers support to Jews, as it has been taken over and devoured by Islamists and Marxists who are welcome there. Also, the Supreme Court issued a major decision upholding that the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was never intended to allow creation of congressional districts based on race; it aimed instead to end race-based segregation in the South. The ruling reaffirms that districts cannot be drawn with racial intent to discriminate or guarantee outcomes, requiring actual evidence of intent to block minorities' opportunity to elect candidates of their choice rather than mere allegations. Democrats have misused the Act to advance their party by creating race-conscious districts, treating certain racial groups as reliable voters and fearing losses in majority-white areas, contrary to the Act's original colorblind aim. Later, Rep Byron Donalds calls in and reports that Gov Ron DeSantis submitted a new congressional map, which the legislature passed and the governor plans to sign. This is a strong reflection of the Florida's political framework. In America’s first hundred years, the animal you were most likely to see was a passenger pigeon. And you saw a lot of them. Flocks were so numerous they literally blotted out the sun for days and their combined weight snapped the branches of entire forests where they roosted. Yet by 1914, the last specimen, a female named Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoo, marking the complete extinction of what had been North America's most abundant bird numbering in the billions just decades earlier. Early Americans assumed the nation's bird populations were infinite, so market hunters fashioned homemade cannons to blast sleeping ducks by the dozens, "pigeoneers" shipped passenger pigeons by the trainload to city restaurants, and feather hunters shot rare birds worth more than their weight in gold so Gilded Age women could wear plumes in their hats. What followed was an unlikely coalition of bird-lovers like Roosevelt, gunmakers, business titans, and brave game wardens who transformed American conservation. They couldn’t save the passenger pigeon, but they saved other species from extinction, like the Canada Goose and the trumpeter swan. Today's guest is James H. McCommons, author of The Feather Wars: And the Great Crusade to Save America's Birds. We discuss how Roosevelt used executive powers to create the first federal bird refuge at Pelican Island in 1903, why the revolutionary 1918 Migratory Bird Treaty Act made nearly all wild birds wards of the federal government while inadvertently establishing that federal law supersedes state law, and how conservation success stories including wild turkeys, wood ducks, trumpeter swans, and bald eagles were all brought back from extinction's brink. McCommons also warns that America faces a new crisis reminiscent of the Gilded Age.
