SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are taking a deeper look at stress in an attempt to find our way back to peace. No matter what your level of stress is, everyone can benefit from a more peaceful existence because life can sometimes feel like an endless juggling act, and let's be real—most of us are using bowling pins instead of tennis balls. Between the pressure to perform, the nagging feeling of not being good enough, and the constant stress of “adulting,” it's no wonder so many of us are stuck in a cycle of burnout. But here's the good news: there's a way to hit the pause button, reclaim your peace, and rewrite the narrative playing in your head. In this episode, we're diving into how to manage stress, tackle the relentless inner critic, and embrace the idea that you're not just “enough”—you're extraordinary. We'll explore why so many of us feel like we're falling short, unpack the serious toll this mindset takes on our health, and share practical, empowering strategies to help you flip the script. Because let's face it, you deserve to feel good about yourself—and that starts today. Ready? With peace being the ultimate destination, let's chart a course offering valuable pitstops along the way. Maybe you sometimes feel stress but not sure it's all bad or that you suffer from too much stress. Maybe the word Peace conjures up tie-die an hemp necklaces instead of a tranquil existence. Let's start with a few definitions to make sure we're all on the same page: Stress: a feeling of emotional strain and pressure that occurs when a person perceives an event as taxing or endangering their well-being.  Peace: freedom from disturbance; tranquility. Ok, simple enough? Hardly. At Healthline, I found Why Americans Are More Stressed Today Than They Were in the 1990s Kira M. Newman helps us understand What to Do When You Never Feel Good Enough found on Greater Good On Therapy in a Nutshell's YouTube channel, I found, Stress, Anxiety, and Worry Self-regulation tools can be divided into quick fixes for immediate relief and long-term health practices for sustained well-being.  Quick Fixes: Excellent for acute stress or when you need fast relief. Long-Term Practices: Create a buffer against future stress and support sustained emotional balance. Integration: Use quick fixes during high-stress moments while building long-term habits for resilience. Quick Fixes These are tools you can use in the moment to calm stress or regain focus. While effective for immediate needs, they don't address the underlying causes of dysregulation. Deep Breathing Take 4-5 deep breaths, inhaling for a count of 4, holding for 4, and exhaling for 4. Quick relaxation of the nervous system. 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique Identify 5 things you see, 4 you can touch, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, and 1 you taste. Redirects focus and alleviates anxiety. Progressive Muscle Relaxation Tense and release muscle groups from head to toe. Relieves physical tension caused by stress. Short Walk or Movement Break A brisk 5-10 minute walk outside or light stretching. Boosts mood by releasing endorphins and clearing the mind. Journaling for 5 Minutes Write down your thoughts or worries. Provides mental clarity and emotional relief. Mindful Distraction Engage in a quick, enjoyable activity like a puzzle or music. Offers temporary relief by shifting attention. Long-Term Health Practices These build resilience and create a foundation for improved self-regulation over time. Mindfulness Meditation Commit to 10-20 minutes daily to cultivate present-moment awareness. Reduces stress and improves emotional regulation. Exercise Routine Regular aerobic activity like walking, yoga, or cycling 3-5 times a week. Strengthens mind-body connection and releases stress-reducing chemicals. Sleep Hygiene Prioritize 7-8 hours of quality sleep with a consistent bedtime routine. Regulates mood, energy, and cognitive function. Healthy Nutrition Focus on a balanced diet with whole foods, reducing caffeine and sugar. Supports mental clarity and stable energy levels. Therapeutic Practices Engage in regular therapy, counseling, or self-reflection exercises. Addresses root causes of stress and emotional dysregulation. Regular Gratitude Practice Write down 3 things you're grateful for daily. Shifts perspective and fosters resilience. Learning Emotional Regulation Skills Techniques like cognitive reframing or dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Provides tools to manage triggers and stress more effectively. CHALLENGE:  Start small. Identify one stressor in your life and address it with a calming technique we discussed, like deep breathing or reframing your thoughts. Then, commit to taking one small step toward asking for support or setting a boundary—because your peace is worth protecting.   I Know YOU Can Do It!

Purposeful Fusion: Aligning Passion with Impact

SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are aligning our passion with impact to create a purposeful fusion. This idea may feel as impossible as seeing a unicorn or finding the funtain of youth. But remember, we are talking about your passion, not someone else's or some predetermined and assigned passion. But I get it.  Finding your purpose can be a real challenge. Society often pushes us toward more traditional paths, making it tough to explore what really lights us up inside. With the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it's hard to find a moment to really dig deep and figure out what we're truly passionate about. And let's not forget about the fear factor – the worry of failing or being judged can stop us from taking those leaps of faith into the unknown. Plus, our interests and who we are can change so much over time, adding to the complexity. Finally, not having clear role models or guidance in certain areas can leave us feeling a bit lost. The natural starting point here is to find out what you're passionate about and for many of us, that could be the biggest challenge. If you've spent your life catering to others' wants, needs, and desires then finding time to do your own deep dive may have been impossible. So for any good journey, let's start at the beginning.  What brings you joy? What lights your soul on fire? What gives you that feeling of fulfillment? What speaks to your heart? I'm not looking for an immediate answer here but these are all important questions to ponder, sit with, and explore.  Ikigai is a Japanese concept that unites the joy of life with a sense of purpose. The term is a combination of the Japanese words 'iki' (to live) and 'gai' (reason), which together signify "a reason to live." To guide us on this journey, we are going to explore the intersection of the four essential elements:  Your passion (what you love) Your vocation (what you're good at) Your mission (what the world needs) Your profession (what you can be paid for) Over at betterup.com Maggie Wooll says The secret to finding your passion isn't looking, it's doing Maggie Wooll to the rescue again with Wondering what you're good at? Here are 10 ways to figure it out found at Betterup.com Dr. Alex Lickerman leads us with How To Find Your Mission found at Psychologytoday.com  Margie Warrell shines a light with Your Purpose Lies at the Intersection of These 3 Things found at success.com Aligning your passion with impact to create a purposeful fusion involves several key steps: Identify Your Passion: Reflect on what activities, topics, or causes ignite a sense of joy and fulfillment in you. What could you spend hours doing without feeling bored or drained? Assess the World's Needs: Consider the pressing issues, challenges, or gaps in society that resonate with you. What problems do you feel strongly about addressing or solving? Find the Intersection: Look for areas where your passion and the world's needs intersect. This could involve brainstorming ideas, researching existing initiatives, or seeking inspiration from others who have successfully aligned their passions with impactful work. Set Clear Goals: Define specific, measurable goals that reflect the impact you want to make. This could include targets related to community engagement, environmental sustainability, social justice, or other areas aligned with your passion and the world's needs. Take Action: Start taking steps to turn your passion into meaningful action. This might involve volunteering, starting a project or initiative, or exploring career opportunities that align with your purpose. Stay Flexible: Be open to adjusting your approach as you learn and grow. Your understanding of your passion and the world's needs may evolve over time, requiring you to adapt your plans accordingly. Seek Support: Surround yourself with people who support your vision and can offer guidance, resources, and encouragement along the way. Collaborating with like-minded individuals or joining communities focused on purpose-driven work can also be beneficial. Reflect and Refine: Regularly reflect on your progress and reassess how well you're aligning your passion with impact. Be willing to refine your approach based on what you learn and experience. CHALLENGE: Start taking steps to turn your passion into meaningful action. Align your passion with impact to create a purposeful fusion that not only brings fulfillment to your life but also contributes positively to the world around you.   I Know YOU Can Do It!

NOTES: When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. “Bring them here to me,” he said. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children. Matthew 14:13-21 When you give, the Lord will have LORDSHIP over other areas of your life. When you give, you will realize that every other RESOURCE is to be used for God's glory. When you give, you will make a DIFFERENCE.    BOTTOM LINE: The more you LET GO, the more you GAIN. THE CHALLENGE: Start your GENEROSITY journey.

More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music

Sometimes we know what we believe but aren't studied enough to defend it. The chorus of Jon Reddick's song "I Believe It (The Life of Jesus)" inspired me to search for Scriptural evidence supporting what I believe about the life of Jesus. Join me as we use this week's song as inspiration to search the Scriptures for why we believe what we believe. In this episode, I discuss the following: Taking a B.I.T.E. out of Scripture – this week's Bible Interaction Tool Exercises include: Reader larger chunks of Scripture Consider big themes The Episode Guide for this week's podcast Making a case for creeds The Nicene Creed Combatting bad ideas with truth The life of Jesus is not just a story - GotQuestions.org Article He shows up in extra-biblical texts His followers cataloged his life as eye-witnesses - 1 John 1:1-4 We are blessed in our belief - John 20:29 Jesus holds the keys to death and hell - Revelation 1:17-18 The importance of Christ's resurrection - 1 Corinthians 15:14-26 Jesus is coming back again - Acts 1:9-11 Episode 368 Philippians 3:20-21 Titus 2:12-13 Matt 24:44 The Holy Spirit is with us and in us 1 John 4:13 1 Thess 4:7-8 2 Timothy 1:13-14 Galatians 4:6 The Holy Spirit gives us power Acts 1:8 Romans 8:11 Ephesians 3:16 Romans 15:13 Pulling it all together - Romans 1:1-6   If you think we are past all of those bad ideas that plagued the early church so that we no longer need creeds—think again.   Additional Resources Lyrics to "I Believe It (The Life of Jesus)" by Jon Reddick - NewReleaseToday.com "Church History for Modern Ministry: Why Our Past Matters for Everything We Do" by Dayton Hartman - Amazon Paid Link "Exalting Jesus in Revelation" by Daniel L. "A family that prays together stays together." How often have we heard this saying? How often do we roll our eyes and think to ourselves, "oh gosh, here we go again!" Don't be ashamed men, I used to think the same thing. The fact is the healthy do not need a doctor, but the sick. And men, unfortunately, we are all sick. Thankfully, Jesus, the Great Physician, gives us an antidote to our illness...prayer!St. Vincent de Paul summarizes prayer perfectly when he states, "Give me a man of prayer and he will be capable of everything. He may say with the apostle, “I can do all things in him who strengthens me.”  Prayer transforms us. God does not need our prayers. God knows everything already. Prayer is for us, gentlemen. Without prayer, we have no captain driving our ship. Prayer is what keeps us grounded and humble to recognize how great God is and how minuscule we are. Listen to part 1 of our 3 part series on prayer! See why the phrase "hound of heaven" is Father Dom's favorite expression of Jesus and why "The Hound of Heaven," was once called "the most magnificent poem ever written in English" by the great G.K. Chesterton to which J. R. R. Tolkien, the master behind "The Lord of the Rings" stated Chesterton was not giving the poem the credit it deserves.  James' Challenge: Start praying! 1, 5, 15, 60 minutes. Doesn't matter! Begin today. Simply ask Jesus to be present in your life, to direct your path, and give you peace. Jesus always meets us where we are at. He is always knocking on our door. Let Him in and see what He can do! As always, please pray for us! We are men who are striving every day to be holy, to become saints and we cannot do that without the help of the Holy Ghost! Get social with us:Follow us on the ‘gram' here.Join our private FB group exclusively for our listeners.Support this apostolate on Patreon. Contact Father Dom and James directly:james.cr.caldwell@gmail.comdcouturier@olcparish.net Resources mentioned: 1. Today my guest Samara and I will be diving into her career as a Speech and Dialect Coach to explore the concept, “I am what power sounds like”. Not only will you learn about different vocal tools you can use to step into character as an actor or increase your impact as a speaker, but you will also learn how to own your voice in order to be heard.Samara coaches actors on projects like Wonder Woman 1984, Eurovision, and American Crime Story: Versace. When not on set, Samara is a public speaking coach for women running for office for the first time, entrepreneurs, and anyone struggling to use their voice in the moments that matter. She has a podcast on iHeartRadio called Permission to Speak and a forthcoming book of the same name published by Penguin Random House about voices and power.Remember: Creating an authentic accent or dialect is all about muscle memory and recognizing what sounds create the experience you hear. So tune into how the people around you communicate and focus on what they do to form different sounds. Research: Out of the different vocal tools listed in the show, such as pitch, up speak, down speak, and vocal fry determine what ones you utilize most often. Are they serving you? What other tools would help you ultimately be heard?Challenge: Start using your voice with great intention in order to share your message best. Whether it's to step into character with a unique accent or it’s to make a difference as a speaker. More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music

There is a difference between optimism and hope that is displayed in the Bible. Before the birth of Christ, there was a tension in the waiting as all of creation anticipated the coming Messiah. Because of Jesus, we live in an age of hope. Building 429 sings about this in their new Christmas song, "Hope is Here (Do Not Fear)." Jesus is our hope of salvation. Let's celebrate Him this week. In this episode, I discuss: Taking a B.I.T.E. out of Scripture - our Bible Interaction Tool Exercises this week are: Read in context Repetition Listen to an audio version Read in a variety of translations Read the text aloud Study with a friend Remember, the people described in these accounts are real Make a list Utilize outside resources - Bible Project The 30 Day Music Challenge - ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE HERE How the angel told Joseph, "Do not fear" - Matthew 1:18-25 Reading the details of Jesus' birth repetitively for Increased comprehension Increased comfort with the text Richer conversations around the text A deeper understanding of the characters Noticing new things in the story Shifting your focus to big ideas Increased ability to make more associations Making a list of what the angel told Joseph about Jesus He came from the Holy Spirit He would save his people from their sins He will be called Immanuel (which means God with us) Recognizing the difference between optimism and biblical hope - Bible Project Resources Beginning with the end in mind - Romans 5:1-11 Making Old Testament connections with Paul in Romans 15:8-13 From the beginning, God had a plan. He didn’t get to Matthew chapter one and say, “I wonder what I’m going to do to redeem my people?” Everything up to this moment was pointing to Jesus. Additional Resources Song release article - FreeCCM.com This Week's Challenge Start this week by diving into the texts describing the birth of Christ in Matthew and Luke chapters 1 and 2. Consider that this was the beginning of Christ’s earthly life but was by no means the beginning. Think about the difference between optimism and biblical hope. Read and meditate on Romans 5, and the salvation described there that was promised through the angel’s words to Joseph.

What is a divine appointment? A divine appointment is a meeting with another person that has been specifically and unmistakably ordered by God. It's not an accident. It's not a coincidence. It is a meeting between you and another person planned by the Holy Spirit.Proverbs 20:24 says, “A person's steps are directed by the Lord.”If this is true, and we believe that it is, it makes perfect sense that God would divinely orchestrate our steps so that we would come across people who need Christ.Over the years, I have had many divine appointments. I met the right person, at the right time, at the right place. Sometimes God gave me the opportunity to talk to them about Christ, or to invite them to church. Sometimes it's an opportunity to pray for someone or to bring a word of encouragement. Other times, it's an opportunity to meet a need. This has happened to me in the grocery store, at restaurants, on airplanes, and many other places. I'm convinced that God wants to use us as his representatives all the time. If we pray and desire that God would use our lives, we shouldn't be surprised when he does. The key issue is that we must be ready and willing. How often do we experience delays, changes of plans, or redirections and regard them as interruptions? It could be that God is detouring us so that we can do something different or new for Him.Here are a couple of things you can do to begin see God use you in this way.Pray for divine appointments. I assure you, this is a prayer God will answer. He wants to use your life for his glory. Prepare for divine appointments. The Bible says in 2 Timothy 4:2, “Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season” (NIV). Also, in 1 Peter 3:15, “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect” (NIV).Today's Challenge: Start looking for these “divine appointments,” you will find them. By making ourselves available to God, we will see things happen that we would have never expected. Believe that He wants to use your life to make a difference. They will be looking to you to guide them, encourage them, and ultimately direct them. So create that bond and trust early on in order to give them permission to come out of their shell. Research: How is your client feeling about the shoot? Check in with them before, during and after the shoot to get a gauge on where you can show up for them. Challenge: Start developing your process! What allows you to be at your best? What works for you and your projects? Start developing and testing a process that brings you success in your projects and in your career.

As part of my regular job, I edit goop's podcast. A recent episode I worked on was with guest Christian Busch, who believes that luck may not always be circumstantial—and that by training ourselves to see something in the unexpected, we can make those accidents more meaningful. You can listen to the full episode here: https://goop.com/the-goop-podcast/can-we-create-our-own-good-luck/. One of the main take-aways for me though was to start a "serendipity journal". It's where you right down all the seemingly happenstance moments of your day without judgement so you can start to recognize what IS actually happening in your life. Because so many of us complain nothing ever happens BUT SOMETHING IS ALWAYS HAPPENING. We just need to remain present to see it. So that's what I challenge you to do—to start writing down all those moments IN a serendipity journal. See how it works for you. Once you start being more present, then you can kick it to the next level by setting intention as Joe Dispenza writes about in Becoming Supernatural (http://www.becomingsupernatural.com/). But I'll save the full details of that for another lesson. Start with the journaling. Try it out and please share your experience down below or hit me up on social media @PhilSvitek. Also, here's an earlier episode I did talking about our ability to increase our luck that tackles these notions from a different perspective: https://philsvitek.com/increase-the-surface-area-with-which-luck-sticks-to-you/. You can only display your talent by doing something. Doing something creates assets and that's what grows your career. Stop waiting for someone to give you permission to express your passions creatively. I don't care if you're a musician, painter, filmmaker, writer, host, etc—find a way to do what it is you love and create something tangible for people to see. I'm not advocating you must finish something ASAP. Take your time. But by sitting on the sidelines, you don't move forward. Plain and simple. 30 Day Water Challenge STARTS: 07/01/2020 ENDS: 08/01/2020 This COVID 19 YEAR 2020 SUMMER, I’m popping bottles… water bottles…LOL. I’ve noticed that I have not been drinking a lot of water. As a matter of fact, I strongly dislike drinking water and that’s the truth. Don’t judge me. I know that water is a crucial part of your health.I get it. I really took notice of my lack of water intake when my hair became brittle and dry. You know how much I love my hair so therefore I’m going to make the sacrifice to drink water for the sake of my curls. For the next 30 Days, I will be drinking a gallon of water a day. I’m going to need your help, though.Join me on my 30 Day water challenge. Here’s how: Grab a gallon of water. Take out your favorite Sharpie markers and design your jug. Add the times during the day when you will be drinking. I rise and grind early so I start drinking between 7 am and 9 am. I consume the amount of water in relation to the markings and times on the jug. Write some inspirational sayings on your bottle. These friendly reminders will set the tone for your drinking. It will give you a reason to want to consume that H2O, so make those statements personal to you. Try these: ” You got this!” “My hair will be so bomb after this.” “Abs over everything.” Throw some flavor in the mix. Add your favorite fruits, herbs, and vegetables to your water. Who said drinking water has to be boring? You can turn up the flavor of that H2O for a better drinking experience. Tell a friend. You don’t have to do this alone. Ask a friend to join in on the fun. Having someone to hold you accountable raises the stakes of this challenge. Remember that friends don’t let friends drink alone–even water. Let’s get out here and pop bottles! In this episode we’ll be talking about kids trading nudes or “sexting” as the old people like to say! Why are kids participating in this risky behavior? And what can we do about it?   Recently we were chatting with a safety officer at a local middle school who relayed the following story (shared with permission):   “I was called to the office to deal with a couple because the school administrator had found nude photos of the girl on the guy’s phone. So I get to the office, and I know these kids, and I say: ‘What’s the deal guys? Are you having sex?’ And the girl goes off! She says, ‘Ew, no way! He has never seen me naked in person--just pictures! That way I can get a good angle and then I can touch it up and put on a filter!’”   There are many questions and side issues when it comes to trading nudes: -Is it child porn?  -Who can be incriminated?  -Have you heard of “sexploitation”? This is basically blackmail with nudes.  -What happens when adults get involved--like predators or adults posing as kids?  However ... in this episode, we’re going to keep it simple and focus on KIDS sharing nudes with other KIDS.   In this context, “NUDES” are pictures of children sent to children (nude selfies). This is different than pre-made porn found on the internet. In today’s culture, kids don’t think of nudes as pornographic images. (How crazy is that!)   So … Why are kids trading nudes? And what can we do about it?   Today we will be discussing:   The Problem: Why Kids are Sharing Nudes The Solution: Tips for Parents Your Best Resource: Talk to the Experts--Your KIDS!   WHY KIDS ARE SHARING NUDES    “Everyone is doing it” -Kids’ perception in today’s world is that ‘everyone is doing it.” In reality, research shows that on average 1 in every 4 kids participate in this behavior. -Titania Jordan from Bark told us that “Trading nudes is the new first base.” For today’s kids, it’s considered a normal, standard way of interacting with their peers. -Since this behavior is so prevalent, and so many of our kids have access to digital devices, viewing nudes can also happen by accident. Just like kids can see bad words written on the bathroom walls at school, our kids might not go looking for these things, but they are exposed to them anyway.  -Kids can be victims of circumstance--just doing their thing--and someone sends them an unsolicited nude picture.   Romantic pressure -Romantic relationships can be a key motivator when it comes to trading nudes. -Girls might have a desire to please or acquiesce or gain attention from a specific young man “this boy wants me to send him 2 pics of me 1 in a bra and the other without a bra. I'm scared to do send them cause he might show people ...but I really like him.” -There is a lot of pressure on our boys to ask for nudes when they are in a relationship because in today’s culture that is what they are “supposed” to do.   Social pressure -Society tends to blame the girls when this happens. -Trading nudes perpetuates the “boys will be boys” mentality. -Boys are collecting and trading nudes “like baseball/hockey cards.” -There are so many challenges for kids surrounding the decisions to send nude photos. Should they be flattered or offended? (Watch this video to hear teen girls talk about it!)   TIPS FOR PARENTS -Be informed about what we mean by “trading nudes.” -Don’t just get upset about the problem. Use the energy to motivate us to talk. -Give your kids a safe place to talk about this in your “Construction Site.” (Create a safe place where your kids can talk to you about anything!)  -Sometimes we slam on the brakes! Assume the best of your kids: If there are images on their phone and they tell you it was an accident or that someone sent it to them without their knowledge, believe them! These things happen. Be on the same team! -Keep in mind your kids might be trading nudes … but don’t panic!  -Don’t assume your kids aren’t feeling pressure to conform. Or they haven’t done so already. -Be sensitive: Your kids might be holding on to some guilt.  -Be a mentor: Help them navigate their feelings. Create a safe place they can come back to  -Be wise about timing when giving your child a camera-enabled device (and don’t be afraid to disable the camera!) -Monitor the pics your kids are taking. If possible, share a cloud so you can see each other’s pics. -If possible, screen your kids’ text messages--not in a creepy or sneaky way. Work together. Mentor. Be a team. Let them know you want to keep them safe.   Want an easy way to monitor your kids’ social media and text messages 24/7? Check out the Bark app! Click here for a free 30-day trial or use the promo code MEDIASAVVY at checkout.    III. TALK TO THE EXPERTS--YOUR KIDS!  -Give kids creative solutions to fight back against the culture of sharing nudes. For example, one group of girls banded together and agreed to send a photo of a raw chicken when they are asked for nudes. Another girl always sends a pic of herself in a T-rex costume when a guy solicits her for nudes. -For young kids, give prescriptive solutions. But for older kids, let them problem-solve and come up with their own solutions. -Make sure your children know they can always come to you and talk about these things. -Role-play: Create a game plan for your kids if they encounter nudes. Ask them specific ques: -What would you do if you see a nude photo on a friend’s phone? -What would you do if a friend sends you a nude picture? -What would you do if someone asks you to send a nude picture of yourself?   Challenge: Start an open dialogue with your kids in the car, at the dinner table, etc. Ask them, “What would you do if someone sent you a nude picture?”    Links: Teens talk about the pressure to share nude selfies (video)

But first I want to ask you a serious question. Do you really think you stand a chance as a designer or an artist or a creative who's really making it? If people don't recognize your style? I guess I'm asking you, do you have a style? What exactly is your signature? What does your voice sound like? What is your aesthetic look like? I'll be real with you. When it comes to daily routines, I'm literally the worst. And I found myself in this situation where I was leaving my full time job back in January and I was kind of scrambling because I was like, Oh God, like I don't have my own style. What is my style, what is my style? And it's because I didn't really put in the work to starting to develop my own style before I went out as an independent artist. Speaker 1: 01:00 Right. And part of that was because of the situation. You know, I, my husband proposed to me and then all of a sudden we were moving to Alabama and my current job wanted me to continue working full time remotely for a while and I was also planning a wedding. So like on top of all that, I don't really have a lot of time to discover my in develop my own art style, but how'd I started, you know, years ago then I would have been well on my way to recognizing my own style, you know, my, my Instagram would've looked cohesive, etc. Etc. So the point is one of the most important things you can do as an artist is developing your own art style. And that's why I'm hosting a 90 day art style challenge that goes all summer. So it's awesome because it's a summer challenge and I'll be sharing daily prompts in my Instagram stories and in the design tribe Facebook group for the next 90 days. Speaker 1: 02:02 So if you're not a member of the design tribe Facebook group, go over to Facebook. You can type in the URL, facebook.com/groups/design tribe, Lauren, Leslie, Leslie is with an e, y as I've mentioned, and you'll be asked a few questions just to make sure that you actually are a creative and make sure it's a good fit. But I'm just fill out those questions. I am not going to accept anyone who doesn't answer that questions y'all. So you have to answer the questions, um, and joined the group and basically it's going to be so amazing because everyone's going to be posting their 90 day project and you're going to use the hashtag 90 days of design. And in the Facebook group I'll be posting and daily prompts, um, I'll, I'll put it out every Saturday. Yay. Sabado Sabato but I'll, yeah, I'll be putting out the prompts every Saturday and there'll be daily prompts. Speaker 1: 03:03 And seriously, if you know you're overwhelmed one day and you're like, oh, I can't get to my art style challenge, it's okay. Like, no one's going to die. It's going to be fine. And I'm sure I'm going to have those days as well. Just Fyi, I'm not the most disciplined person in the world, but I had to get my act together because I was showing my designs and collections at blueprint, which happened two weeks ago. So yay. So I had my very first exhibit, um, and I, you know, exhibited at this show and it was really awesome. And basically I was like, you know, starting in, starting February 1st I was like, crap, I'm showing, I'm showing my work at the show, but I don't even have a style. I don't have any work. What am I going to do? And instead, so usually when you're under the gun like that and under a bit of pressure, you're able to figure it out and just pull it off. Speaker 1: 03:56 And that's what I did. And that's also kind of, you know, it was my inspiration to create this challenge because I was like, holy crap. Like I was able to create my own style in 90 days. Now is it the best style in the world? No, but it's mine and I like it. It's going to continue to develop and get better and progress. The more, um, the more art I make and the more challenges I do. So 90 days is like really the perfect amount of time to accomplish anything you set your mind to. Quarterly goals are so attainable, seriously, their bite sized, you know, it's not like an annual goal where we were like, Oh yes I have the whole year to accomplish this and you know, it's going to get done eventually. No like you have 90 days, this is happening now. So it's totally in your reach but you also have enough time throughout 90 days to really make some serious change. Speaker 1: 04:49 And that's what I love about this art style challenge is that it is three months. You know, it's not going to take you all year. It's not like a commitment like a four year art school or something like that, but it is enough time for you to make some serious change and some serious progress in your work. And that's what I'm super excited to see. Um, and look, I totally failed at starting the 100 days project. Like, so, you know, I mean, I, I hesitate to even join some of these challenges sometimes because I'm like, oh, I'm not going to be able to do it. I'm not going to be able to finish. I'm totally gonna feel like a failure and I'm here to tell you that I'm making this an evergreen challenge so that you don't feel that way. You are here to, you know, do as much or as little as you are able to. Speaker 1: 05:36 I realized that everyone's schedules are different. Some of you have kids, I don't have kids and I'm still gonna like fail a day here and there at this challenge. So it is okay. I promise. Um, you know, it's, it's going to be evergreen so you can literally do it prompt by prompt by prompt and if it takes you longer than 90 days, that's totally cool because hey, you're still doing the work. Um, I'm just making it a 90 day challenge because that is what I did in getting ready for blueprints show in New York. Um, but my first trade show and it really did work. Okay. Okay. So 90 days is just a great schedule and I am going to be keeping with the schedule just to keep everyone motivated and to kind of keep the group together. But if you need to go at your own pace, it's totally cool. Speaker 1: 06:25 Just go back to the Facebook group, you know, go prompt by prompt. And I'm also going to be sharing these prompts every Saturday in my email list. So if you're not a part of my email list, then you will want to go ahead and sign up for that. Um, and you'll do that by just joining the Facebook group already. And if you're not part of my email list or you're not getting my emails for some reason, just shoot me a private message and I'll gladly add you. So yes, that is pretty much it. I don't have a guest on today. I just wanted to tell you about the art style challenge that's going to be happening all summer long and I want you to join and it's going to be amazing and mixture to use the hashtag 90 days of design and tag me at Lauren Leslie Studio. Speaker 1: 07:11 I'm on Instagram because I'll be sharing my favorites and my Instagram stories as well. And I want to encourage you to also follow the Hashtag cause you know how you can follow hashtags on Instagram now. So follow the Hashtag 90 days of design. 90 is literally the numbers, nine zero days of design. And because I want to encourage you to share each other's works as well. That's how you gain exposure, right? If one person shares my work to their audience and you know, 10% of their audience follows me, then that's amazing, right? And if five people shared my work, then that would be a 50 new followers, you know, so it just, I wanna encourage you guys to share each other's work. I'm going to be sharing your work, but you guys share each other as well. Um, because it's just a really great way to promote each other and give back and just encourage each other and make friends. Speaker 1: 08:08 Right? Um, but you do want to ask people if it's okay. Um, you can, you know, you could put it in your stories that you're happy to share. If people respond to your stories so that way you don't have to go in and DM like a million different people. But that way people can respond to your story and then you can just share your favorite um, piece from their feed just like that. So it's a great way to share works and get exposure. And guys, if you do this art challenge, you are going to have your own art style in 90 days or less. I mean, sometimes it happens really quick once you really commit to making them this amount of work and you're just, you're never going to find your art style if you can't commit to making the work. And like I said, if you miss a day is okay, it fine. Speaker 1: 08:55 You are not a failure but you still have to do the work. Okay, you have to get up the next morning and do it the next day or stay up a little bit later, you know, 30 minutes later or draw something on your lunch break. You know, you have to commit to doing the work and just find a way to do it and prioritize it. So that you can have your own art style, because we all want to be like famous in our own field, right? Like now, like Hollywood famous. But you know, we want to be, we want to do a good job. We want, um, we want to be the best that we can be, um, and have that rewarding feeling. So anyway, thank you guys for tuning in. I will catch you in the next episode. Bye.

We've all done it. At certain times in our lives we've all settled for second best; accepted what we thought we could get, rather than pushing for what we really wanted. But what about the other side of the coin? When you refuse to recognise the victory for what it is and keep on pushing until you've burnt yourself out, alienated people around you, and find yourself left with nothing at all? When the ego comes knocking, Total Victory can seem like a real goal – but is it? Victory can also be the moment of greatest vulnerability, as events shake out and you need quickly to set the agenda for what comes next, before someone else does it for you. In these delicate transitional moments, it's easy to start believing your own hype, which history shows is very much like penning your suicide note... Law 47 centres around the need, above all things, to plan what you intend to do – to respond rather than simply to react in the moment, buffeted by the winds of fate. Do you know where you're trying to get to? Will you even recognise your goal once you've reached it? it's all too easy to imagine an emotional state in place of the tangible victory, and start pouting and whining when you achieve the latter without the former. This Law – presaging the final, 48th Law – emphasises adaptability above all things. Ego must come second: do you want to be right, or do you want to be effective and successful? Most of the time, the two don't go together. As ever, we share our own stories and difficulties with this Law. Dre explains how he's still working to overcome the habit of thinking his goal was closer than it appeared, and not to get sick of something he's working for when it simply takes too long to achieve. Jon wonders about education and whether degrees and qualifications actually matter – especially when they, like other paper goals, end up getting substituted for self esteem. We also explore how to cultivate an awareness of how things are going, rather than falling into nameless anxiety; seeing luck as the Absence of Catastrophe; we advocate more sleep to avoid becoming Margaret Thatcher; and also define the nature of belief... Because, why aim low? This episode includes: Stamping your authority on victory, before someone else steals your thunder How startups fail to observe this Law... to their peril Why lottery winners squander their money Getting real: Is the goal you're aiming for actually going to mean what you hope it will? Bad luck and why we should love it Knowing when to push to the end, and when to drop things and move on Outstaying your welcome Mentioned in the episode: You can buy our beautiful companion book, The 48 Laws of Power in Practice, from the publisher HERE, or through Amazon Mark Manson's book, The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A Fuck Our feature interview with the awesome Cory Allen Nassim Nicholas Taleb's, The Black Swan   Challenge: Start an argument with somebody on a particular subject... and stop as soon as you get one concession. Don't press beyond that mark and see what happens. Be silly. Be kind. Be weird. Join us as we continue our 48 Laws of Power review, exploring Robert Greene’s provocative and compelling book, in which he lays bare the history, practice, psychology, and philosophies of power that ultimately shape all human relations. Often seen as a handbook for the ‘modern Machiavelli’, we take a closer look, beyond the hyperbole, and discuss how understanding and implementing these Laws can actually enrich your life personally, professionally and spiritually. Jon and Dre aim to get to the heart of each of the Laws, grapple with their sometimes disturbingly amoral nature, and discuss what the Laws mean in everyday life (often revealing their own experiences – good and bad – when they’ve either observed or transgressed them).

It's time for the next Dear Nina Friendship Monthly Challenge! The January challenge was to see a friend in person, which meant reaching out to make a plan. The February challenge is to start a ritual/tradition with friends to strengthen new relationships or maintain existing ones. For accountability, report back in the Dear Nina Facebook Group, on Substack, or via email when you've made the plan. It's okay if the plan doesn't happen in February. Just get the planning going! To quote (myself!) from January, "In a healthy, robust, social life, or at least a deeply fulfilling one where you feel like you can be yourself, there's less keeping score, less keeping track, less waiting for invitations, and less moralizing about who should have included you. You dear listener are in charge. You will do the including."And that statement is completely applicable to the February challenge as well. I hear from people who feel they need to start over with friendships or that they've never had good friends. So when you hear something like "start a ritual," you might be thinking, "But Nina, I don't have any close friends." And that's the point. These rituals and traditions can become the foundation of close friendships. In my interview with Rachel Steinman and Rachel Winter, co-authors of STAY GOLDEN, GIRLS, you will hear examples of traditions between longtime friends, newer friends, and I share some of my own traditions with people who are now longtime friends, but who weren't when we started certain annual plans. The power in rituals and traditions are not even about the activity itself in many cases. It's about the anticipation and organization! Of course there are tricky elements of planning these traditions, too. How many people should you include? That's a big one, and there are others. We discuss them all in the episode!Links mentioned:All the 2025 Monthly Challenges newsletter posts "How to Make Plans with Friends" Episode #56 with Kat Vellos: Managing Group TextsMeet "The Rachels"Rachel Steinman and Rachel Winter are here to help give inspiration to all of us.
