Imagine!Spring cleaning in full swing- master bedroom, closet and dressers got the "black contractor bag" treatment.Goslings set to hatch end of next week- so far, the seven eggs look good!

Despite recent declines in some goose populations, fresh data suggest that hunters have reasons to be optimistic about the number of young birds flying south this fall. Dr. Mike Brasher is joined by goose experts Josh Dooley (US Fish and Wildlife Service) and Frank Baldwin (Canadian Wildlife Service) to discuss indices for arctic and subarctic goose populations from Alaska to Atlantic Canada. Many areas experienced early spring and good to excellent conditions for nesting, with multiple indicators suggesting better production than what was experienced a few years in the past. New data and hunter reports from the prairies support these conclusions, so good luck to goose hunters as you head afield.Listen now: www.ducks.org/DUPodcastSend feedback: DUPodcast@ducks.org

As artists who released records as part of the label's Crucial Bliss CD-R series, it was wonderful to finally meet and talk to Adam at some length. During the interview we cover a lot of fascinating ground, including his early years as a musician in the Maryland doom and hardcore scenes, the enduring influence of horror films in his love of heavy extreme music; a theme that moves from Adam's earliest years to the devastating horror noise doom-filth of the infamous Crucial Blast artist Maurice de Jong aka Gnaw Their Tongues. We also discuss the label's origin story and some of Crucial Blast's seminal early releases by Merzbow, Weed Eater, The Angelic Process, The Goslings, among numerous others--the beginning of a deep dive into the label's massive discography. The interview covers a lot of interesting topics including the evolution and eventual nexus of hardcore and extreme heavy music, our shared love of harsh noise, and Adam's recent passion for the emerging improvisational death metal scene. We really look forward to part 2 and hopefully meeting Adam in person in the near future!

In spring and summer, the paths around local ponds might have some fluffy obstacles: young goslings along with their caring and defensive parents. Adult Canada Geese lose their flight feathers for several weeks in the summer, often while they're raising a brood of goslings. Without the ability to fly away from people, and with their young to protect, grounded geese may act especially territorial. Fortunately for a growing family of geese, newly-hatched young are able to swim and even dive underwater within just 24 hours.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? Summary: Ever wonder about those Canada Geese that hang out in Arizona all year long? Join Cheryl and Kiersten to find out some pretty amazing things about these waterfowl!   For our hearing impaired listeners, a transcript of this podcast follows the show notes on Podbean.   Show Notes: www.Allaboutbirds/guide/Canada_Goose www.birdnote.org  Our email address, please reach out with comments, questions, or suggestions: thefeathereddesert@gmail.com   Transcript   Host Voice: Welcome to The Feathered Desert a podcast all about desert bird feeding in the Southwest region of the United States. (Various bird calls play)   Cheryl: Welcome to the Feathered Desert! Today Kiersten and I are going to totlak about the Canada Goose. It is what I wait for when fall is just around the corner, to look up and see these large, bodied birds in their v-formation flying over my head.  Sometimes, so low I can hear their wings flapping as they propel themselves through the air to their nighttime resting spot along a water's edge.   I decided to find out a little more about these geese that to me represent a change in the seasons.   Kiersten: Description: I love this idea because the Canada Goose always mean Fall is coming! There are at least 11 subspecies of Canada Goose.  In general, the geese get smaller as you move northward, and darker as you go westward.  The 4 smallest forms are now considered a different species: the Cackling Goose. I love that name! (laughs)   These big water birds with a long black neck, large tan breast and, or large gray/brown body, with a large, webbed feet, and a wide flat bill.  They have a white cheek and a white chinstrap. This is the more prominent identification Canada Geese have a smoothly sloping transition between bill and forehead. Very statuesque birds!   Cheryl:  Habitat and food sources Canada Geese in habitat many habitats near water, grassy fields, and grain fields.  These large waterfowl are particularly drawn to lawns for two reasons:  they can digest grass and when they are feeding with their young, manicured lawns give them a wide unobstructed view of any approaching predators. Thank you very much golf courses!  So, they are especially abundant in parks, airports, golf courses and other areas with expansive lawns.  Two subspecies have adapted to urban environments and graze on domesticated grasses year-round.   Kiersten: That's smart!   Cheryl: Birds are always one-step ahead!   In spring and Summer, geese concentrate their feeding on grasses and sedges, including skunk cabbage leaves and eel grass.  During fall and winter, they rely more on berries and seeds including agricultural grains, and seem especially fond of blueberries.  This fascinates me that scientists know they like blueberries.   Kiersten: I know I like blueberries, so I don't blame them at all.   Cheryl: They are efficient at removing kernels from dry corn cobs.   Kiersten: That fascinates me! They have a lot more strength in those beaks than you might think!   Cheryl: Yes! You don't want to be nipped by one of those.   Kiersten:  Social behavior Canada Geese mate for life with a very low divorce rate (we could learn a lesson there!), and pairs remain together throughout the year.   Canada geese are known to be very devoted to each other.  These geese mate “assertively”- larger birds choosing larger mates and smaller geese choosing smaller mates.  Canada geese do not breed until their fourth year of life. That's which too! You need to know who you are before you get involved.   Baby Geese or goslings (I love that name!) are quick learners.  These impressionable young birds use their mimicking skills to mimic the adult birds. Which is smart! You are on the ground and need to get your stuff together quick! Goslings learn how to swim just 24 hours after hatching.  Parents teach their young ones how to fly when the goslings are 2-3 months old. That's when their flight feathers have grown in. It's kind of hard to fly when you're covered in downy feathers.   Cheryl: It's fascinating that they teach their young how to fly, I thought they just instinctively knew what to do.   Kiersten: They do have to figure out what to do with their arms, or wings.   Migrating flocks generally include family groups and individuals.  Young geese often remain with their parents for their entire first year, especially in the larger species.     Cheryl:  Territorial behavior Although usually very social during breeding season Canada Geese are highly territorial. Don't approach those gosling! Territorial threat displayed by these geese may involve head pumping, bill opened with tongue raised, hissing, honking, and vibrating neck feathers.  If the interloper does not retreat geese may grab each other and hit each other with their wings. You don't want to get nipped by one of these geese. When I was young, my mom had to flee to the top of our station wagon when we accidentally got in between him and his goslings and mate! He went after my mom and she climbed on top of the car but he was still able to bite her and she got a big bruise!   Kiersten: Oh yes! My husband walked to school as a child and they had to walk by a pond. During breeding season, they knew to steer clear of the lake and avoid the geese. They'd walk almost a mile out of their way to make sure they didn't get bit!   Kiersten:  V-Formation That's what everyone thinks about when we think of geese. The v-formation is a kind of synchronized aerial tailgating and marks the flight of flocks of larger birds, like geese.  Observers believe that each bird behind the leader is taking advantage of the lift of a corkscrew of air coming off the wingtips of the bird in front.  Each bird flies a little higher than the bird in front of it. This corkscrew updraft is called a tip vortex, and it enables the geese to save considerable energy during long flights.  This formation also helps the weaker of the flyers to have support through the migration flights. The V-formation may also enhance birds' ability to see and hear each other, thus avoiding mid-air collisions. That is super smart!   Smaller birds probably do not create enough of an updraft to help others in the flock and don't fly in vees.   It's a bit controversial, but there does seem to be a lot of research supporting it. The older birds will switch places from the front giving the leaders a break during flight. The smaller, younger birds will not because of their size and that they are still earning the route.   Cheryl: This is all learned, as well! And they work well together as a team.   Kiersten: Yes! We could learn another lesson here!   Cheryl:  Whiffling in for a landing. When a flock of Canada Geese comes in for a landing at a lake and you might be surprised by their appearance of laissez faire attitude toward landing on the waters surface.  But that is only the perception of you as an observer, if the flock comes in too fast or too high above the water, geese have a little trick to slow themselves down for a safe landing. The geese stop flapping and then quickly roll their bodies upside down, while twisting their long necks the right way up.    That sounds like a yoga pose I could not do!   Finally, they rotate again to right themselves just in time to gently splash down.  This maneuver is called whiffling and it seems to help these birds to slow down quickly-but it might just be for fun.   Kiersten: It does sound like fun! Maybe it is both!   Cheryl: Yes! Fun and useful!   Kiersten:  Migratory or not? If Canada geese are supposedly migratory than why do we see them here all year round?  Good question.   Up until the early 1900's Canada Geese were almost hunted to extinction.  Yes, that's right this large bodied bird that is so abundant was very close to being not.      In the early 1900's non-migratory geese were brought in by the hundreds to populate wildlife refuges.  Many of the geese that stay year-round are the descendants of birds introduced by game management authorities in an effort to revive some of the original wild populations that had been decimated by hunting.  I say that Canada Geese re-wilding was a success!   Cheryl: When you hear that very familiar honking and look up to see these amazing birds flying in their V-formation hopefully this information helps to feel more awe inspired.

The idea is that Disney would use the membership program to make it more attractive for guests and customers to increase spending on all its products and services. For Disney, it would give more consumer data as to your spending habits and more.So would this mean the retirement of programs like D23? Days being longer just means they just keep going...Lupine had her final calf, and after watching her push a few times with nothing to show for it, Acorn had to pull a "James Herriott" and reach inside (up to her armpit) to see what was the problem.  No front feet or nose, but a bum with back legs tucked under its body.  Acorn had to grab each back hoof and ease it out and when both feet were showing Lupine gave some mighty pushes and out plopped a lovely dun bull calf. Phew!Garden is "getting there."  Goslings love their new LARGE area and even "self loaded" into their night-time pen this evening. Pour the ingredients carefully into a glass in the order listed to keep the colored layers separate. You'll need a steady hand and a strong stomach. To layer, take a bar spoon and hold it in the glass, touching the side, with the back of the bowl facing up. Slowly pour each subsequent ingredient over the bowl of the spoon, so it settles lightly over the top of the ingredient below. The high proof dark rum that is floated on top is meant to be lit on fire. This step is NOT necessary but definitely adds a lot of fun and show. Please use your discretion and use extreme CAUTION when lighting alcohol on fire. Hatching BasicsWe cover chickens, ducks, and geese in this episodeTouching on turkeys and quail, the more common poultry species on mosthomesteads. From how to pick your incubator, pick the right eggs to hatch, where to put yourincubator, and how long. There is a lot to know! While we all can read as much information as we can digest, you do gain a lot ofinformation once you have a few hatches under your belt. The difference isn't too vast when it comes to each species we will talk about, butthere are a few.Set up and choosing an incubator:There are SO many.Simple StyrofoamIncubators that have auto turnersCabinet styleHow do you choose? Most of us are going to go middle of the road and invest in anincubator with an auto turner. This allows us to set the eggs and NOT have to turnthen 3-5 times a day.The incubator is mimicking what would be happening if a broody would elect tohatch a clutch, so we cant just set the eggs and walk away for 21-28 days. And then we have to talk about the “air types” inside the incubator. There are basically two types of incubators available, forced-air and still-airincubators. Forced-air incubators have fans that provide internal air circulation. Thecapacity of these units may be very large. The still-air incubators are usually smallwithout fans for air circulation. It is just kind of like a hot box and not as common.Still-air incubators are trickier to use, and it requires precision to set this kind ofincubator. The radiant heat warms up the air, and since the air will not be able tocirculate, it is very crucial to identify the correct placement of the eggs. The warmair tends to not be equal, thus making it harder to achieve a successful hatch. In addition, the setting of still air incubators has to be exact otherwise, temperatureand humidity anomalies might occur inside.Backing up, in order to have a successful hatch you have to focus on two things.Temperature and humidity. Remember we are replicating what it would be like ifthe hen or goose went broody and hatched these eggs on their own.We have talked about it before, how we as humans seem to interfere too much whenit comes to many aspects of homesteading, this is no exception.Chickens 21-days/Lockdown day 18- Temperature 99.5 incubator temp/Humidityaround 45% for first 18 days and then bump up to about 60-65% at lockdown.Ducks 28 days/Lockdown day 25-26 (besides Muscovys)- Temperature99.5/Humidity about 50-55% for the first 25 days and then bump up to about 65-68% at lockdownGeese 28-35 days-/Lockdown 3 day before hatch day- Temperature 99.5 (if not ahair lower- 99.4)/Humidity 50-55% for the first 25 days and then bump up to about65-68% at lockdown. For waterfowl- a cooling period is even more beneficial/crucial than with chickeneggs. Again, this is mimicking the mother bird. Some folks with mist the eggs every day or so, again replicating the mother birdbathing or swimming.Place your incubator in a draft free location.Everyone will have slight variations, we all live in different home environments. This is why we talk about trialing with a couple of eggs, especially if you arehatching eggs that are very special or hard to find.Assisting the hatch? While you are waiting for the poultry to hat

Spring means a new generation of wild animals on the landscape. With more people enjoying the great outdoors, that can mean more human/wildlife encounters. Wildlife biologist Anne Mary Myers talks about how those encounters often end badly for wild animals, especially young animals removed from the wild by well-meaning people. It's important to understand that a young animal's chances of survival drop precipitously when they're removed from their natural environment.

Enjoy this episode with some Goslings neat, or in a Dark 'n Stormy! Goslings' official website: https://www.goslingsrum.com/ (https://www.goslingsrum.com/) Brief Historical Timeline: 1806 - William Gosling charters a ship to carry his eldest son James Gosling to Virginia from London with £10,000 worth of wine and spirits to open a merchant business, becalmed at sea, the ship only gets him to Bermuda before his charter runs out 1820s - Ambrose Gosling, younger brother of James, joins him in Bermuda 1857 - One of the blends Ambrose has been experimenting with becomes known as "Old Rum", later to be renamed Black Seal. Pre-WWI, the Goslings begin bottling their Old Rum in reused champagne bottles, sealed with black wax, locals begin to order the "black seal" 1940s - The logo with a black seal juggling a barrel of rum on it's nose is introduced 1991 - The Dark 'n Stormy cocktail is trademarked by Goslings Key Cocktails: Goslings is a required part of the trademarked Dark ' n Stormy. Here's how to make it: 4 - 5 oz. Ginger Beer (Goslings would prefer you use their brand) 1.5 oz. Goslings Black Seal Rum Lime Wedge Fill a glass with ice, pour in the ginger beer, float the black seal on top, and garnish with the lime. It’s remarkable to hear John Bello’s current take on SoBe, the lifestyle beverage brand that he co-founded and sold to PepsiCo for nearly $400 million. Already an accomplished marketing executive when he launched the brand in 1996, Bello helped shape SoBe’s healthy halo and exotic vibe by infusing its drinks with trendy functional ingredients like ginseng and ginkgo biloba. However, he admits that SoBe was essentially “sugar water” packaged and designed to give consumers what they believed to be a healthier option. “There was a user base that liked the fact that there was ginseng, ginkgo and guarana in it,” he said. “And almost every week on every lifestyle show they would be talking about something new that could make you stronger, smarter, skinnier and sexier, and that’s what we promoted. The reality was, we were sugar water. We had a user base that really felt that what they were drinking was better than the alternatives.” Bello’s admission is part of an intriguing conversation included in this episode. In it, he expounded upon the development of SoBe, including early missteps and why coming of age during an era of “healthy hedonism” turned it into a top-seller.  He also chronicled his long career as a business executive and entrepreneur, which began with an ROTC scholarship and a tour of duty in the Vietnam War and included roles with General Foods and the NFL. Bello also explained why he accepted an offer to become chairman of Reed’s, a ginger-centric brand of craft sodas, and how he views its products as providing the kind of functional benefits that SoBe lacked. Show notes: 2:42: Interview: John Bello, Co-Founder, SoBe/Chairman, Reed’s -- In an interview recorded at Reed’s headquarters in Norwalk, Conn., Bello recounted how his experience in the Navy provided a foundation for his business career and how he earned the nickname “Merchant of the Mekong Delta” during the Vietnam War. He also explained why working on the Sanka brand while at General Foods was his “first exposure to wellness,” and what he learned about branding and distribution while at PepsiCo. Later, he spoke about his experience as the vice president of marketing for NFL Properties and how it gave him his first taste of entrepreneurship and how a stint at AriZona paved the way for SoBe’s marketing strategy. He also explained why the initial concept for SoBe failed and how the brand’s embrace of “healthy hedonism” and timely distribution opportunities gave it a runway for success. Finally, he spoke about why he joined Reed’s and why he views its ginger beer brand as potentially filling a void in major beverage portfolios. Brands in this episode: SoBe, Reed’s, Maxwell House, Sanka, AriZona, Mountain Dew, Pepsi, Hint, LaCroix, Goslings, Cock'n Bull, Fever-Tree, Bundaberg, BodyArmor

The new 12 inch on Mexican Summer, which sold out in a matter of days and is pretty much long gone from distros (try the Nominal shop), is a nice slice of dreamy pop from the sister duo. The A side features the two "hits", while the much more preferable B-Side is two smeared and haunted daydream lullabies that resonate the loudest, at least with me. Three seven inches are forthcoming (PPM, Big Love and Gloriette) and a 12 inch on Art Fag, hopefully in the coming months.LA Vampires, who recently sprung up out of nowhere, drop one of the more innarestin' tracks on the already explodin' with ideas comp, My Estrogeneration. LA Vampires, which is in fact a moniker for this mysterious sole female project, trudges the same warped reggae/dub path already worn by labelmate (and future collaborator!) Sun Araw, albeit in a more chopped 'n screwed way. New split 12 inch with Psychic Reality just unleashed on NNF, more on that soon. Also, keep an ear out for an upcoming collab with Zola Jesus.Despite reams of acclaim from Washington Post, Baltimore Sun, AMG, LA Record, The Stranger, BBC Music, and even Rolling Stone, I somehow completely missed one of 2009's most exciting LPs, namely Double Dagger's More on Thrill Jockey. While jammin' some records over at a friends place, More was eventually put on with a smirk and no mention of the band name. Holy shit! Is this an Unwound rarity I've never heard? Did ...Trail of the Dead ditch the pomp and circumstance and go back to the white-fisted anger of Madonna? Dude, seriously, what the hell is this? The record apparently hadn't even hit the shelves of any decent record store in town, but it was ordered in through the local grocer and I've been immersed in this monster ever since. Only drums, bass and vocals, but what a dense racket these three fellas make. The above mentioned bands are obvious starting points, so fans of those post-hardcore aggressors are urged to seek this one out. Highest recommendation. Thanks to the always quick work of Art For Spastics, I got to the Rotting Chapel site just in time to order one of the last 150 copies of a new Goslings double cassette release. Fans of the Goslings already know what they're getting into, namely, an overdriven-sludge pummeling that's recorded well beyond the red. There really isn't anyone out there making this much of a unique and, yet, highly listenable racket on the planet right now. Archive just re-issued the classic Grandeur Of Hair CD (check that out here) and their collab with Warmth. Archive, with their handmade and silkscreened CD packages, are about the only label out there worth buying a CD from. So go do that, please.Topping Bottoms are a new-ish band that fall in step with the long line of overblown psych bands that have emerged from Japan over the last 25 years or so. High Rise, Acid Mothers Temple, Suishou No Fune, and Mainliner (all of which owe a massive debt to the mighty Les Rallizes Denudes) are the forbearers of the sound, and Topping Bottoms are there to keep the amps smoking. Eye-popping silkscreened inserts with artwork by band member Ryo, who also did the artwork on the recent Blank Realm LP and cassette release.

As expected, missed records from 2009 keep rolling in, with the Meercaz LP on Tic Tac Totally (reissue of Gulcher Records CD from early 2009) currently dominating the stereo. For those that are also late to the game on this one, Meercaz is based outta Portland, Oregon and even shares a member with one of my favorite bands from that city, Meth Teeth. Definitely one of those records that doesn't sound contemporary, but more like some long lost mid-70s proto-punk group hailing from some industrial city in middle America. Heavy riffage, tone deaf vocals and plenty o' weird analog synth bleeps and burps thrown in for serious left tiltage. Songs range from two-minute, fist pumping MC5-styled jams to seven-minute stormy industro-punk excursions. Highly recommended. Also late on the 2009 chopping block is the sprawling 2LP speaker shredder that is the new Shit & Shine. Over an hour of repetitive riffs that sound spewed through slashed amps and run over with a rusty lawnmower. 229-2299 Girls Against Shit also makes brief dalliances into dub, disco and, uhhm, race car humour(?). Yeah, anyways, fans of the early, damaged end of the Butthole Surfers and even the overkill fuzz-sludge of The Goslings are urged to pay attention. The painfully limited-run of the Siltbreeze 10 inch compilation Skulls Without Borders dropped in the mail slot last week, and it's an odd mix of folks trying to share the same airspace. Puffy Areolas make a nasty punk-splatter and give high hopes for their forthcoming Siltbreeze debut LP; Chickins, an FNU Ronnies off-shoot, put down a quirky number complete with raygun guitar shots; Dan Melchior plops down another grumpy blast of fuzz riffs and off-kilter guitar solos. The flipside, featuring Kurt Vile, Tommy Jay Band and Sic Alps, will be played next week...Heading back over to this side of continent, AFCGT (aka A Frames Climax Golden Twins), who have been given much love here on ETMS, drop their vinyl-only (!) release via Sub Pop next week, and I was lucky enough to be able to provide a sneak peek. Not much has changed from the Seattle juggernaut, hell, if anything, the 5 piece have beefed up their sound considerably on the more amped up tracks, and waded even deeper into their more experimental side. Not yr typical Sub Pop release, but we're pleased as all hell they've decided to put this one strictly to wax.Swimming up the coastline back to our city, Tassles sent over a few intriguing tracks of drifting bedroom electronic pleasantries. Tassles is better known in Vancouver as Sean Orr, who helms the shit detector on Beyond Robson's Morning Brew and fronts the recently reunited post-hardcore revisionists Taxes. Tassles sees Orr relaxing his jaw for a few and learning to relax a little bit. You probably won't see Tassles open for Taxes anytime soon. Either way, someone out there release fucking something from either of these...asap!Banana Head (aka Zully Adler, head of Goaty Tapes) also was kind enough to send some new jams my way. Brand new cassette of solo loner jams, absolutely perfect for these bland winter days. Goaty Tapes has come a long way since its inception a few years back; brand new tapes by HNY (awesome cassette on Not Not Fun reviewed here), Russian Tsarlag and Paradise Sisters, who have a forthcoming 12 inch due out soon on De Stijl. In the works are cassettes by El Jesus De Magico, Psychic Reality (split 12" with LA Vampires forthcoming for them on Not Not Fun) and Goaty will also head into LP territory with an Ancestral Diet full length. Get stoked, people.Hot off the heels of the much-loved seven inch, Brainbombs offshoot No Balls release a full length LP on Sweden's Release The Bats. And, of course, its in a disgustingly small pressing of 300 and sold out before it was even outta the pressing plant. Not far off the Brainbombs aesthetic of violent, hammering repetition, but, this time around with just drums and guitar, plus the occasional sax squlech and distance vocals, which may or may not be appallingly misogynistic. This meager pressing has annoyed me enough to share a ripped version with ya'll (courtesy of Soundeyet).Tassles "Brother Soft" unreleased mp3, 2010Indian Wars "Carol Anne" s/t 7" (Bachelor) 2009The Intelligence "Gettin' Classy" split w/ Unnatural Helpers 7" (Dirty Knobby) 2009Fair Ohs "Automatic" Obscene & Violent: A Tribute To GG Allin 7" (Italian Beach Babes) 2009Male Bonding "You Hate Me And I Hate You" Obscene & Violent: A Tribute To GG Allin 7" (Italian Beach Babes) 2009Chickins "Chickin Den" Skull Without Borders compilation 10" (Siltbreeze) 2009Dan Melchior "1000 Times" Skulls Without Borders compilation 10" (Siltbreeze) 2009Puffy Areolas "El Jita" Skulls Without Borders compilation 10" (Siltbreeze) 2009Meercaz "Unlust" s/t LP (Tic Tac Totally) 2009Shit & Shine "Have You Really Though About Your Presentation?" 229-2299 Girls Against Shit 2LP (Riot Season) 2009AFCGT "Black Mark" AFCGT LP (Sub Pop) 2010No Balls "Come Clean" Come Clean LP (Release The Bats) 2009Oneohtrix Point Never "Russian Mind" Russian Mind LP (No Fun Productions) 2009Afternoon Penis "...Jack Of Hearts" split w/ Eskimo King LP (Abandon Ship) 2009Banana Head "Take It Back" In The Tubs CS (Goaty Tapes) 2009Blue Sabbath Black Cheer & Nihilist Assault Group "untitled" Planned Obsolescence LP (Gnarled Forest) 2009
