In this episode of the Vanderbloemen Leadership Podcast, Jared sits down with Eugene Lee, Director of Consulting at Vanderbloemen, to unpack what it really means to lead beyond your title. Together, they explore the kind of leadership that builds trust, inspires action, and creates lasting impact—not because of position, but because of influence. Key discussion points include: Leadership Beyond the Title: Why a role or title alone isn't enough—and how true leadership is rooted in influence, not authority. Building Trust Through Relationships: How trust, not control, creates a thriving team culture. The Power of Self-Awareness: Why most leaders think they're self-aware (but aren't), and practical ways to get an honest view of yourself. Healthy Feedback Culture: How to both give and receive feedback in a way that builds people up and unlocks growth. Courageous Authenticity: What it looks like to lead with vulnerability—and why it might be your greatest leadership strength. Whether you're leading a team of two or an entire organization, this episode will help you grow in influence, lead with authenticity, and build a culture of trust that goes far beyond your title.

2022 Theater You Can Still See: Set Design from Beowulf Boritt

All Of It

[REBROADCAST FROM September 23, 2022] If you love theater, you've likely seen a set designed by Tony Award-winner Beowulf Boritt, from "Come From Away" to "Flying Over Sunset" to "Merry Wives" to "POTUS." Now he's drawn back the curtain on his process, and the importance of set design, in his new book, Transforming Space Over Time: Set Design and Visual Storytelling with Broadway's Legendary Directors. Boritt joins to reflect on his career, and his collaboration with directors like James Lapine, Kenny Leon, Hal Prince, Susan Stroman, Jerry Zaks, and Stephen Sondheim. You can currently see Boritt's work onstage in "The Piano Lesson" (through January 29), "Mike Birbiglia: The Old Man & The Pool" (through January 15), and "Ohio State Murders" (through late February).   Mecca: A Conversation with Stephen Sondheim Setting: Stephen Sondheim's Turtle Bay town house: the holiest of holies for several generations of theater artists. We're in a ground-floor living room, sprawling and cluttered, spreading from a small front entrance foyer through the main chamber to a back conservatory that opens into a community garden. The room's salient visual feature is Steve's collection of antique puzzles, displayed in frames and vitrines and arrayed on tables. Beowulf Boritt: I'm sure you hear this from a lot of people, but your shows, more than any others, are what convinced me to pursue theater. I grew up thinking musicals were frilly and silly, but when I started being exposed to your shows—first Sunday, then Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd—I thought, This is what I want to do. Stephen Sondheim: So you're blaming me? BB: Just placing blame where it's due, Steve! I asked various directors, “What productions made a strong impression on you when you were young?” Both James [Lapine] and Susan Stroman credited Sweeney Todd and its design as the show that made them think, This is what theater can be. Of course, Hal directed it, and the set was famously a real, and enormous, Victorian factory reassembled onstage by Eugene Lee. But that set isn't inherent in the writing; in fact, the action is never literally in a factory. When you were developing the show with Hugh Wheeler, it wasn't with a factory setting in mind, was it? SS: No, no. That came afterward. That was Hal's idea. I don't know how he came to it. For me, Sweeney Todd is not really a story of how the Industrial Revolution manufactured vengeful Sweeney Todds. That had nothing to do with what I wrote at all—though I did ultimately put one line in the lyrics about machines, to make Hal happy. I wanted to do it as a small, scary show. I told Hal that if we were going to do it at a big theater, I'd like to drape the entire place in black, have gaslit lampposts all around, and have the cast all around, too: on top of you, beside you, in the aisles, and so on. I wanted the whole theater to look like the inside of a coffin. I wanted an organ and an organist onstage for that opening prelude—a loud organsound to start the show. BB: You said you have no part in designing the show, but that's a very clear visual image you just described—your initial thoughts about it. SS: I have no visual imagination to say, “The costumes should be red.” But of course I have some ideas about staging the numbers. The director can throw them out, but I do go on record with what I am thinking. BB: I'm going to rewind to early in your career, to one of my favorite musicals and one I have not yet hada chance to design. Did you have any visuals in mind as you wrote West Side Story with Arthur Laurents and Leonard Bernstein? SS: Where is Puerto Rico? No, I don't think I had anything in mind, but I'll tell you an anecdote, one of those things that one never forgets. Oliver Smith, who designed it, wanted to show us the model of the setso we went out to his house in Brooklyn. He showed it to us and there was concern over the scene with the highway bridge, for the rumble at the end of the first act. Jerry Robbins—or maybe it was Lenny or Arthur—turned to me and said, “What do you think?” I was twenty-five years old! “I agree,” I said. “It just doesn't seem quite right.” Oliver turned on me and said, “Who cares what you think? You don't know anything about the theater!” He was really ugly. He was upset that they didn't like it, but he couldn't lash out at Jerry, Lenny, or Arthur, so— BB: And you were the new guy. SS: Yes. You know , I understand why he did it. BB: Did you ever work with him again? SS: No. BB: When you're the new kid, and an old hand lashes out at you, it's amazing how much it stings. You remember it forever. On my first Broadway show, Spelling Bee, that happened to me. Someone involved in the show, not James, really went after me because I was the new kid. To be honest, I had probably donesomething stupid—but it was unpleasant, and I will never forget it. BB: Last question, and it isn't really a question. I'm going to shorten the quote, but you've said, “Lyric writing has to exist in time. You have to lay the sentences out so there's enough air for the ear to take them in. There's music, there's costumes, there's lighting. There's a lot of things to listen to and look at. And therefore, the lyric must be in that sense simple.” SS: The experience of a musical is so rich that it's like you're getting two kinds of dessert. You're getting the pecan cake and the caramel ice cream, so you don't want to overdo it with either one. SS: All art is about economy of means. It's about finding the part that is necessary and getting rid of the unnecessary. That's the hard part, but once you know it, if you're ruthless, you'll get rid of the extra and keep the great. In general, in art, less is more. Although you must remember, there is also Tolstoy!

If you've ever wondered what it'd be like to see the Little Rascals go up against two vicious murderers ... then seek psychiatric help immediately!Mystery to Me returns this week with a double-feature of two short films from the Our Gang series— alias The Little Rascals or Hal Roach's Rascals. Both shorts play with the detective genre. One is your average silly Our Gang fare. The other has actual death and an extended shoot-out scene.Hide and Shriek is a short film that was released on June 18, 1938. It was directed by Gordon Douglas, and is the last ever Our Gang flick to feature the participation of creator Hal Roach. It stars Carl Switzer as Alfalfa — alias X-10 — Billie Thomas as Buckwheat — alias X-6 1/2 — Eugene Lee as Porky — alias X-6 — and Darla Hood as Darla. In this story, Alfalfa recruits his friends to his new detective agency ... but a jaunt in a haunted house soon proves that mystery-solving can be a bone-chilling profession. This was the 168th Our Gang film.Little Miss Pinkerton is a 1943 Our Gang film directed by Herbert Glazer, starring Billie Thomas as Buckwheat, Billy Laughlin as Froggy, Janet Burston as Janet, and Robert Blake as Mickey. It was released on September 18, 1943. This was the 216th entry in the Our Gang series. In this film, the kids witness a brutal murder and get taken hostage. No, really! That's the plot.Listen to the gang discuss Dashiell Hammett, the Pinkertons, the trailer for The Batman, and aging Áine's frail health.Follow us on the usual social media suspects:FacebookTwitterInstagramSend your traumatic childhood memories to mysterytomepodcast@gmail.com.Mystery to Me is a production of Mystery Sheet LLC.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this episode, Eugene interviews Rachelle Barbour, an assistant federal defender for the Office of the Federal Defender of the Eastern District of California. She is an advocate for Omar Ameen, an Iraqi refugee accused of being an ISIS commander and murdering a police officer in Iraq. On April 21, 2021, a federal judge ruled this was physically impossible because Ameen was not in Iraq at the time of the alleged murder. However, Ameen nonetheless remains detained in an ICE facility and has been held in detention for over 1000 days. Eugene and Rachelle discuss federal immigration cases and the mechanisms that can keep someone locked up and separated from their family. In January of 2020, Ben Taub wrote a piece for the New Yorker that outlines how Ameen landed in prison: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/01/27/the-fight-to-save-an-innocent-refugee-from-almost-certain-death Watch Vice's video coverage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5r1ngPeyv1g Take Action: https://freeomarameen.com/ This episode was edited by Eugene Lee.

What happens when new scientific research meets traditional Christian doctrine? How should we think about the relationship between faith and science? How does the big bang theory fit within Genesis 1? What does quantum mechanics have to do with predestination and the omniscience of God? How does the anthropic principle square with a biblical notion of a designed and purposeful universe? To answer these big questions, we look to the lives and work of theologians and scientists throughout the centuries. They give us examples of how to be an intellectual devoted to both science and Christian faith, showing us that no contradiction exists between them when the truth is genuinely sought. We invite you to read and meditate on Psalm 19 this week asking God to reveal himself to you through his word and creation. In this talk, we explore how to manage, address, and resolve conflict so that you can live a life of happiness and joy. It’s been a year like no other, especially for bartenders and anyone in the hospitality industry. So for our final episode of 2020, we're taking a look back at the year that was on the Living Proof podcast. You'll be hearing snippets of a few of the conversations we were lucky enough to have in 2020, the first of which focus on the subject of wellness and balance for bartenders. We had some great discussions with Tim Philips-Johansson, Australia's most awarded bartender, and Mark Livings, CEO of Lyre's Spirit Co, about how and why young people are increasingly choosing to drink less. Then, we cast our minds back to when the pandemic first took hold of cities the world over, spelling a long lay-off for many bars. We hear from Dante's Liana Oster, who we spoke to back in April, and then Big Bar's Eugene Lee and Selene Martinez. Finally, we explore how the industry might emerge from the challenges of the year with a renewed focus on high quality customer experiences. Alex Ross, who opened the renowned Ginger bar in Melbourne, talks us through how she keeps the customer front-of-mind whenever she's working on a project. And Diageo's Global Cocktailian, Lauren Mote, describes how the front- and back-of-house are coming together to create guest experiences that go beyond the glass. And we couldn't look back on 2020 without re-visiting our hilarious chat with Artem Peruk of El Copitas Bar in St Petersburg - the bar that went from scrounging around to find enough chairs to open, to sitting proudly on the World's 50 Best Bars list.

As the first church began to grow and include people from different backgrounds, the early disciples had to confront their own thinking and see that God's grace was available to anyone and everyone. Through honest discussions and prayer, the disciples learned what it would take to be a radically inclusive community. Today, we explore the idea that the church doesn't exist for itself, but for others. Think about who you can you offer radical acceptance to in your everyday life. And, this week, make the effort to extend a welcome to someone outside your circle.

Regardless of who won or lost the election, the church wins or loses based on how followers of Jesus love others. For Christians, it's not ultimately about who's in leadership, it's about who we ultimately follow. It's about discipleship and apprenticeship to Jesus. In this talk, we explore how we are called to love others, even in these divided times. Who do you need to show kindness to today? Who can you show radical acceptance to this week? We invite you to pray about who you want to be a blessing to this week and that each of us will be a blessing to our neighbors.

It’s a supreme display of character acting.” Darryl Reilly, "Theater Scene" AMERICAN SON “And as a police lieutenant who arrives near the end, Eugene Lee makes a powerful figure of a plot device.” If you liked this podcast, shoot me an e-mail at filmmakingconversations@mail.com Also, you can check out my documentary The People of Brixton, on Kwelitv here: www.kweli.tv/programs/the-peopl…xton?autoplay=true Damien Swaby Social Media Links: Instagram www.instagram.com/damien_swaby_video_producer/ Twitter twitter.com/DamienSwaby?ref_src…erp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor Facebook www.facebook.com/Damien-Swaby-213805135363397

For those who follow Pop Culture Confidential, you know that we LOVE Saturday Night Live (SNL) and refer often to how it has influenced pop culture over the decades. We are so excited to be joined this week by Eugene Lee, who has been the original Saturday Night Live production designer since the start of the show's first season in 1975. At 77, he is one of the only original crewmembers still working. The SNL set Lee designed has a true New York vibe with real bricks and a nod to Grand Central Station. Three Tony Awards, 12 Emmy nominations, and one Emmy win later, Lee continues to carry on his accomplished tradition in theater while also leading the "SNL" production-design team, week in and week out. Lee comes from the theater world and has worked on Wicked, Sweeney Todd and Candide. He is not slowing down, he has also designed the sets for Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, which show the variety of his work. Lee joined us from his home and workshop in Providence, Rhode Island where he is based. He commutes to New York every Wednesday to start the week at SNL, meeting with the directors and screenwriters to understand their vision for each skit that will come that week. He hand sketches each set and works up until the last minute before each show, perfecting what we at home see on screen. We discuss the wonderful legacy of Saturday Night Live, his work process and the joy he feels being such a part of the experience we have had watching SNL for the last forty years.

We celebrate Booth One's 50th! episode with guest co-host, Jim Reho. For the past several years, Jim has resided in the Brighton Park neighborhood on the South Side and joins us to give a great tour. Learn more facts about Chicago's South Side. Jim reports on some of the highlights in his part of Chicago. For starters, check out some of the best thin crust pizza anywhere at Vito & Nick's, 84th & Pulaski. They have been around for 90 years! Another Reho favorite is a place that serves Korean/Polish cuisine. We are planning a "Roscoe at Large" visit to check out this great concept at Kimski! Read a 4 star review here. For excellent musical programming in a beautiful setting, hear a concert at Thalia Hall. Built in the 1890's as a replica of the Prague Opera House, it was one of the most ornate theaters of its time. Located in the Pilsen neighborhood, it has wonderful acoustics and you can even rent part of the balcony. Talk about Booth One! Check out the fascinating history. We are planning to see a show there and will report back. Between Christmas and New Years was the highest grossing week in Broadway history. 359,495 people saw a Broadway show that week. Jim talks about his favorite classic American musicals, including Carousel, a Booth One favorite. Listening to the original cast album the other night, Jim says there are 4 indelible songs he can list off the top of his head. He asks Gary if there are any songs in Hamilton that will live throughout history. Gary's response is there are probably half a dozen. Jim reveals that while he majored in English, his undergraduate minor was in - get this, the History of the American Musical Theatre! Gary reports on his trip to Writers Theatre to see East Texas Hot Links and says, "You will not see better acting anywhere...It is a powerful, bold and troubling statement. I couldn't recommend it more highly." Read one of the many rave reviews here. This Pulitzer Prize finalist was written by Eugene Lee and directed splendidly by Ron OJ Parson. Speaking of Ron, he's directed a production of Blues for An Alabama Sky, running now at the Court Theatre in Hyde Park. We are looking forward to a featuring the marvelous Court Theatre on an upcoming episode. Gary talks about the Kennedy Center Honors, which featured a stunning tribute to Mavis Staples by Bonnie Raitt and Andra Day, backed by a gospel choir. Read details here.  And watch President Obama's introduction here. Jim and Gary discuss Bonnie Raitt's lovely relationship with her father, John, who was the original Billy Bigalow in Carousel in 1945! See John and Bonnie sing a gorgeous duet of Hey There with the Boston Pops when he was 85. Another highlight of our winter theater season on Booth One was seeing The Christians at Steppenwolf. Gary and Jim talk about the fascinating questions the show raises about faith, death and forgiveness. Again, with crazy good acting - across the board! Chris Jones' review for the Chicago Tribune gives you a great sense of the play. Try to see it in person. Unforgettable! Gary calls for a sequel. Kiss of Death: Learn about Sister Francis Ann Carr, a powerful member of the Shaker community.  Read full obituary. From the Times Union obit, "The Shakers are a Christian religious group founded in 18th century in England. They practice a celibate and communal lifestyle, pacifism, and their model of equality of the sexes, which they institutionalized in their society in the 1780s, the group's website explains...They are also known for their simple living, architecture, and furniture." The Shakers offered homes to children or families who had nowhere else to go. Sister Francis was one of the last three practicing Shakers in her communal village.

Eryn is joined by Suzanne McCalla on this episode of Going for Broadway. Eryn has worked under Suzanne’s direction at the Greenville Little Theatre since 2009, and is a dear friend to her. Suzanne joined GLT in 1993.  She is head of design; designing costumes and sets for the past twenty-one seasons. Suzanne’s early career was spent primarily at The Dallas Theatre Center with legendary director Adrian Hall and Tony Award winning designer, Eugene Lee. Their vision of theatre has always been her primary source of inspiration. Suzanne talks about being in the right place at the right time to help you get success, as well as having connections. The two discuss auditioning for everything versus things that you are only good for. She believes that you must know what you are good that, and only audition for those certain opportunities and not go out for something that you aren’t the best at. Of course, you can work your way up to getting that skill, but that shouldn’t be the start of it. Know yourself! Suzanne’s word of advice comes from being able to have lots of life experience, keep your eyes open, and know that there are many ways of working your way up. She says to meet lots of people as well. Parents, keep those checkbooks open; be an investor and supporter in the arts!

A year and a half ago when I was researching how to start a wiki and looking for best practices in wikis – there was little information out there about it. So I decided to reach out to our internal consultant and found out there were already 6 wikis within the BearingPoint organization all built to do collaboration for various teams! I once read that 90% of collaboration happens in email – which is a shame since that really isn't collaboration – it's almost the opposite of collaboration! The goal of collaboration is to include as many people to get the best thinking on any given issue.
