If you'd like to suggest a topic for a future SoCal history segment, email it to atcomments@laist.com.  Orange County is still in a state of emergency after smoke and debris from the Tustin hangar fire tested positive for asbestos and other toxins last week. Tustin schools remain closed. The fire broke out at Tustin's Marine Corps Air Station early Tuesday morning, irreparably damaging one of two historic blimp hangars there. The hangars were built in 1942 to hold Lighter-Than-Air aircrafts, or LTAs, that patrolled the U.S. coastline during World War II. At 17 stories high, more than 1,000 feet long, and 300 feet wide, the hangars were two of the largest wooden structures in the world. They've been mostly vacant since the base was decommissioned in 1999, sometimes serving as a shooting location for films and commercials. Now, the north hangar (Hangar 1) will have to be demolished completely. The south hangar (Hangar 2) is still standing, but there are no current plans to preserve it. The Marine Corps community is reeling from the loss. Joining Larry to discuss the hangars' history, significance, and the fight for preservation are Brian Delahaut, retired Marine Colonel stationed at Tustin between 1983 and 1995, and Chris Jepsen, local historian and president of the Orange County Historical Society.

Wer Colindale kennt, kennt London, denn dorthin verliert man sich nur mit einem driftigen Grund. Carla erzählt von drei Menschen aus der Gemeinde, die sie dort über Jahre seelsorgerisch begleitet hat. Alle sind mittlerweile verstorben, und Carla geht heute aus einem anderen Grund nach Colindale: das Museum der Royal Air Force. Ein Gelände mit drei riesengrossen Hangars vollgepackt mit Flugzeugen. Ein lohnenswerter Ausflug für alle Generationen. Wer gerne asiatisches Essen mag, kann sich danach in der Bang Bang Foodhall verköstigen. Danach kann man Colindale aber auch wieder verlassen.

Sipplingen erreicht man von Norden kommend nach grade mal 5 Kilometern ab Seebeginn. Man kann also von dort aus recht schnell beide Seiten des Sees erkunden. Foto: Quelle Dornier Museum Friedrichshafen Auf der Seeseite, an der Sipplingen liegt, kann man vorbei an dem bekannten Pfahldorf und vorbei an Meersburg über Immenstadt, Friedrichshafen, Kressbronn und Lindau bis nach Bregenz fahren. Das sind rund 70 Kilometer, die man ohne anzuhalten in einer guten Stunde schafft. Wir haben nach der Hälfte der Strecke und der Fahrzeit in Friedrichshafen einen Stopp beim Dornier-Museum eingelegt. Das ist auch ein guter Tipp für einen Schlechtwettertag. Das vermutlich bekannteste Flugzeug – richtiger gesagt Flugschiff - des Visionärs Claude Dornier war ohne Zweifel die DO X mit ihren zwölf Kolbenmotoren, die in sechs Tandem-Gondeln über der Tragfläche angeordnet waren. Dieses Flugschiff existiert heute leider nicht mehr, aber im Dornier-Museum sind dennoch viele Flugzeugexponate zu sehen. Foto: Quelle Dornier Museum Friedrichshafen Dass das Dornier-Museum in Friedrichshafen steht hat seinen Grund, der Ort ist die immerhin die Geburtsstätte der Firma Dornier. Das Museum ist in Form eines Hangars mit 5.000 Quadratmetern Ausstellungsfläche in einen Landschaftspark von rund 25.000 Quadratmetern integriert. Im Museum gibt es eine Dauerausstellung, die in drei Bereiche gegliedert ist. Das Kernstück ist die sogenannte Museumsbox. Dort wird in einem Rundgang die Geschichte des Dornier Konzerns und die Entwicklung der Luft- und Raumfahrt in den vergangenen 100 Jahren gezeigt. Die Faszination des Fliegens kann man im Hangar fühlen. Hier stehen beispielweise die Dornier Wal  und die noch flugfähige Do 28 A sowie weitere Originalflugzeuge und der Hubschrauber Bell UH-1D, alle können aus nächster Nähe bestaunt werden und sind legendäre Klassiker der Fluggeschichte. Das Dornier-Museum ist von Dienstag bis Sonntag jeweils von 10:00 bis 17:00 Uhr geöffnet, auch individuelle Führungen in Gruppen von maximal 20 Teilnehmen sind möglich! Walter Smerling ist Ausstellungsmacher, Kurator, Kulturmanager und für seine zahlreichen engen Verbindungen in Politik und Wirtschaft berüchtigt. Als Vorsitzender der Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e.V. Bonn leitet er unter anderem das Museum Küppersmühle in Duisburg und rief die höchst umstrittene sogenannte "Kunsthalle Berlin" ins Leben, ein privates Ausstellungsprojekt in zwei historischen Hangars des stillgelegten Flughafens Tempelhof. In der Kulturszene der Hauptstadt löste er damit einen Sturm der Entrüstung aus, weil der Berliner Senat seinem privaten Verein nicht nur die Räume gratis zur Verfügung stellte, sondern zu Beginn auch noch einen Teil der Betriebskosten sponserte. Am Montag dem 30.Mai, also einen Tag vor Veröffentlichung dieser Folge, die wir bereist vor ein paar Tagen aufgenommen haben, wurde überraschend bekannt, dass die Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur in Tempelhof keine weitern Ausstellungen plant. Just came across an announcement that American Airlines Hangar 3-5 have been cleaned up at LaGuardia Airport That caught my eye as the notice also mentioned that the original AA domestic passenger facility at LGA Hangar 1 one of the most historically significant buildings on any airport anywhere had been demolished. But to compare them in value historically with Hangar 1 is like trying to match up some pseudo paste with the Hope Diamond. This is the place that guaranteed that there would be a LaGuardia with airplanes in New York City in 1939. As the airport was building in 1938 at North Beach , Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia still needed an anchor tenant so he set aboutconvincing American Airlines founder CR Smith and the brilliant negotiator CR had just coaxed away from Braniff OM “Red” Red Mosier to move AA's entire corporate headquarters operation from Chicago to New York's new North Beach Airport Hangar1 in Flushing Queens. Mosier made the deal,New York City awarded American "pole position" in Hangar One at the new airport, and AA set up shop in New York City. Our featured guest pilot today is Dave Reilly joining us from Merlan Soaring center in Virginia.  Like many of us From the time he was a kid he wanted to fly. Dave discovered gliding in 2005 and progressed from the 2-33 to the 1-26 and on. He now enjoys flying in is very own LS8-18 Dave shares some great stories with us like the time he was not sure if he was going to make it back to the glider port but remembered he had been in this situation before in the same area during simulation flying in Condor what happens next may surprise you?  In mid May Dave did a 240 mile flight that completed the altitude and distance requirements for his Silver Badge, as well as the requirements for his Gold Distance and the Diamond Goal. On a fun note, he recently flew a 114 mile run to the North west ridges and retrieved the Boomerang plaque from the Front Royal club after they landed at Merlin and claimed it on 5/15. In this special episode of Object Matters, Dr Craig Barker is joined by Toni Hurley, teacher, educator, historian, one-time president of the History Teachers Association and known to generations of school students as a co-author of the Antiquity series of textbooks. Toni is also the grand-daughter of renowned Australian photographer Frank Hurley (1885-1962).   In this podcast Toni and Craig discuss two lantern slides of Hurley photographs, formerly from the Geology Department collection. Both are images of the 1st AFC Australian Flying Corps campaigning in Palestine in World War One, and Hurley's pioneering work recording the missions of the Flying Corp in the Middle East both from the ground and from the air. We discuss Frank Hurley as a grandfather and a photographer, his love of the Middle East, his experiences in Antarctica and Papua New Guinea, the importance and controversies of his war photographs, including composite images and the role of museum collections in school history education. We also look at Frank Hurley's love of risk and his interest in aerial photography during this pioneering phase of aviation and aerial warfare. Heute befinden sich die als Technische Denkmale gesicherten Anlagen inmitten des Campus' der Humboldt-Universität zwischen den Institutsgebäuden der Chemie und Physik und dem Erwin Schrödinger-Zentrum.
