Liberals won't like it, but according to the Seattle based historian and podcaster Daniel Bessner, Trump's wannabe imperial presidency is a “natural outgrowth” of the centralized power of the FDR presidency. In a provocative Jacobin piece, Bessner contends that executive power has been expanding since FDR, with the U.S. President increasingly becoming an "elected monarch." The leftist Bessner criticizes American liberals for both obsessing over the fictional specter of fascism and for failing to address the economic inequality that enabled the rise of Trump. And he expresses pessimism about meaningful reform, arguing that 21st century capitalism has become too entrenched for significant changes without some dramatic external shock. 5 Takeaways from the Bessner Interview* Trump's presidency represents a continuation of American traditions rather than fascism, with his immigration policies echoing historical patterns like the Palmer Raids and McCarthyism.* The significant shift under Trump is his aggressive tariff policy against China, which represents a departure from decades of neoliberal economic approaches.* Presidential power has been expanding dramatically since FDR (who issued over 3,700 executive orders), creating what Bessner calls an "elected monarch" with increasingly unchecked authority.* The failure of liberal leadership, particularly Obama's inadequate response to the 2008 financial crisis and insufficient economic redistribution, created the conditions for Trump's rise.* Bessner expresses deep pessimism about the possibility of meaningful reform, suggesting that capitalism has become too entrenched globally for significant democratic changes without some external shock like climate disaster or war.Daniel Bessner is an historian and journalist. He is currently the Anne H.H. and Kenneth B. Pyle Associate Professor in American Foreign Policy in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. He previously held the Joff Hanauer Honors Professorship in Western Civilization and is also a Non-Resident Fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, an Associate of the Alameda Institute, and a Contributing Editor at Jacobin. In 2019-2020, he served as a foreign policy advisor to Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign; in 2024, for unclear reasons, the Russian government sanctioned him. Daniel is an intellectual historian, and his work has focused on three areas of inquiry: the history and contemporary practice of U.S. foreign relations; the history and theory of liberalism; and, most recently, the history and practice of the entertainment industry. Han hade tävlat i multisport i över 30 länder i drygt 20 år och träffad så många gatuhundar på vägen. Men ingen var som Arthur. Den här veckan gästas jag av entreprenören, producenten och multisportaren Mikael lindnord. När han för 10 år sedan tävlade VM i Ecuador gav han en gatuhund ett par köttbullar mitt under loppen ute i djungeln i en liten by. Efter det släppte hunden inte Mikael. Det som hände i djungeln blev viral och när laget gick i mål hade dom en extra lagkompis som dom döpt till Arthur. Historen blev fyrsten bok som Mikael skrev och nu har den även blivit en hollywoodfilm med Marc Wahlberg i huvudrollen som Mikael. Jag är nyfiken på vad det var med Arthur som gjorde att han var så annorlunda än de andra hundarna han mött genom åren, vad Arthur har betytt för Mikael, familjen och många andra. Och såklart hur det var att följa arbetet kring filmen “Arthur the King” då Mikael var på plats under hela inspelningen, vilket inte är helt lätt att få till i Hollywoodfilmer, att personen som speglas får vara med. Lars sa sig vara en framgångsrik affärsman och lovade henne guld och gröna skogar. Bland annat skulle han investera i filmen om Greta Garbo så att Anna-Karin kunde få sin stora filmroll. Deborah Snyder has produced some of the biggest blockbusters and action franchises in the last decade including Wonder Woman, 300 and Watchmen. Her newest work, Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver arrives on Netflix this week. It's the second instalment of the Rebel Moon series, a space opera set in a fictional galaxy with a female protagonist. Deborah produced it alongside her husband and long-term creative collaborator, director Zack Snyder. She joins Jessica Creighton live in the studio.Today is the deadline to register to vote in the local elections on May 2nd. The most recent data suggest that 4.3 million young people in England aren't currently registered. Jessica speaks to Sharon Gaffka, who's supporting the Give an X campaign, calling on young people to get involved. A survey by the youth led charity My Life My Say also says that fewer than 1 in 6 of young women trust politicians and more than four in 10 believe their vote won't make a difference in an election. Professor of Politics and Director of the Global Institute for Women's Leadership at King's College London will join Jessica to explain the trends behind the latest data. In 1927 journalist Sophie Treadwell attended the sensational trial of Ruth Snyder, a New York woman accused murdering her husband. Ruth was found guilty, along with her accomplice lover Henry Judd Gray, and both were executed by electric chair in January 1928. Those events inspired Sophie Treadwell to write the play Machinal, which premiered on Broadway later that year. Vor 20 Jahren, genauer gesagt am 9. Februar 2004, veröffentlichte die schottische Band "Franz Ferdinand" ihr selbstbetiteltes Debütalbum und damit einen echten Meilenstein der 2000er Indie-Rock-Ära. Das lag mit Sicherheit auch am größten Hit des Albums "Take Me Out". Anfang der 2000er war Indie-Rock vor allem aus Großbritannien absolut im Trend. Bands wie Radiohead, Maximo Park, Bloc Party und viele, viele mehr haben die angesagtesten Tracks des Jahres geliefert. Ganz vorne mit dabei waren auch die Schotten von Franz Ferdinand. Franz Ferdinand haben es mit ihrem selbstbetitelten Debütalbum quasi direkt an die Spitze der angesagtesten Indie-Rockbands geschafft. Vor allem ihr Song "Take Me Out" war aus den Clubs und aus dem Radio nicht mehr wegzudenken. 2005 bekam die schottische Band für ihre Leistungen dann sogar den begehrten BRIT Award verliehen. Zu dieser Zeit tourte die Band nicht nur viel auf den Bühnen, sondern sozusagen auch über die Cover diverser Musikmagazine wie "Visions", "Musikexpress", "Rolling Stone" oder die Zeitschrift "Spex". Die Verbindung nach Deutschland geht vor allem vom Gitarristen Nick McCarthy aus, der im oberbayrischen Bad Aibling (in der Nähe von Rosenheim) zur Schule ging und später auch Klavier und Kontrabass in München studierte. Neben dem Bandnamen gibt es auch einen deutschen Songtitel auf dem Debütalbum der Band: "Auf Achse", der sich auf die gleichnamige deutsche Fernsehserie aus den 1980er-Jahren bezieht. Zu Gast in dieser Folge der SWR1 Meilensteine ist auch André Pittelkau. Er ist nicht nur Fan der SWR1 Meilensteine, sondern hat selbst einen starken musikalischen Hintergrund. Er war unter anderem Teil der erfolgreichen deutschen Popgruppe "Frida Gold". Als Keyboarder und Songwriter hat er an dem erfolgreichen Debütalbum "Juwel" von Frida Gold mitgearbeitet und er hat auch selbst eine indirekte Verbindung zu den Bandmitgliedern von Franz Ferdinand, wie er im Podcast erzählt. Unabhängig von der persönlichen Verbindung zur Band ist für André Pittelkau das Debütalbum von Franz Ferdinand aber ein echter Meilenstein. "Ich finde, das ist ein absoluter Meilenstein, weil es nicht weniger als die letzte große Rockrevolution mit ausgelöst hat", erzählt André Pittelkau im Meilensteine Podcast. Neben der absolut tanzbaren Indiemusik, die in den 00er-Jahren – vor allem die kleineren Clubs, auch bei uns in Deutschland dominiert hat – haben Franz Ferdinand noch mehr Independent Vibes verbreitet. Denn auch visuell hat die Band sich anders präsentiert als die großen Mainstream-Künstler und bei der Wahl der Plattenfirma schlug das Herz der Musiker ebenfalls ganz auf "Indie". Das hat genauso die Plattenfirma "Domino Records" gefreut, denn für die waren Franz Ferdinand der erste große Treffer, der vielleicht sogar die Existenz des Labels sichergestellt hat. "Franz Ferdinand haben es mit diesem Album geschafft, sich als Schutzpatron aller Indiebands zu etablieren und zwar für alle die, die ohne Kompromisse einzugehen an die Spitze der Charts kommen wollen", meint André Pittelkau über das Vermächtnis von Franz Ferdinand und ihrem gleichnamigen Debütalbum. Die Entstehung des Songs "Take Me Out", der für die Band zum größten Hit wurde, ist besonders spannend. Denn die Inspiration für den Song, in dem zwei potenziell Liebende sich sozusagen umkreisen, kommt aus dem Kriegsfilm "Duell – Enemy at the Gates" mit Hollywoodstar Jude Law. In dem Hollywoodfilm versuchen zwei Scharfschützen, sich in der Schlacht um Stalingrad gegenseitig auszuschalten. The movie is expected to provide an economic boost in the state, along with providing local job opportunities. Episode 068 Scott Pellet S.O.S. Friend, Skater, Hollywood Film/TV editor, TEXAN! Scott and I met over 10 years ago when he was trying to help put together a film on the history of Texas Skateboarding. We quickly became friends and have stayed in touch since then, sharing meals, skating, stories, hanging with family and mutual friends, etc... Scott found an interest in filmmaking at an early age.  Being a kid who grew up in the Dallas area and riding at the Jeff Phillips Skatepark, the first major media project he put together was on Jeff Phillips. Scott's love of skateboarding, filmmaking and music have filled his life and still do. He has been working in the Hollywood TV/Film world for quite awhile now.  I have been fortunate enough to get to visit him at some of the studios he was working at and see sets for successful TV shows such as The Goldbergs and Chuck. He has worked as an editor on the TV shows  "Chuck" (NBC), "The Goldbergs" (ABC), "Mad Dogs" (Amazon), "Sneaky Pete" (Amazon), "L.A.'s Finest" (Spectrum), "Painkiller" (Netflix) and the Lionsgate feature, "The Devil You Know".  You can check his IMDB credits by clicking on this IMDB link.  You will see all the cool stuff this skater has done. I am stoked I have gotten to see a lot of it up close and personal over the years. For several years, Scott and fellow Texans Heath Cherryhomes and Jake Kirby would make an annual pilgrimage to all the local skateparks while Heath and Jake stayed with me during the summer. We were all given nicknames and Scott's was S.O.S. "Sex on a Stick".  I had Texas-sized stickers of our nicknames printed for our helmets symbolizing our brotherhood.... Things we discuss in this podcast that I think some of you might find interesting are our skating adventures, his work on his first film about Jeff Phillips, his Hollywood gigs and the time he filmed interviews (including Jeff Grosso) at my house.
