Rachael Sage Shares Thoughts On Her New Album

Rachael Sage sometimes seems like a force of nature. A distinctive and expressive artist, she could also be considered as one of the individuals at the forefront of the women's movement, having founded her own record label, MPress, being named a six-time Independent Music Award winner, as well as a John Lennon Contest Grand Prize winner. She's shared stages with an eclectic array of other artists, performed at the Edinburgh Fringe festival, SXSW, and toured internationally. Her brand of provocative alt-folk is both adventurous and appealing, as illustrated by the fact that her 2020 album Character brought her a charting single, "Blue Sky Days,” while her subsequent project, Poetica, found her fusing poetry, jazz, classical music and Americana in a way that brought to mind an unlikely alliance between Leonard Cohen and Laurie Anderson. Her most recent efforts, aptly titled Another Side, finds her toning down her quirkier qualities and aiming instead for a more melodic perspective, sharing a series of songs that are delicate and demure, yet uplifting and optimistic all at the same time. True to form, it shows Sage conveying the warmth and conviction that's so essential to her sound. Rachael spoke to Lee and Billy on My Backstage Pass and shared her thoughts on her new album, her output in general and what it means to be not only an exceptional artist but the head of a record label as well. Send us a Text Message.Jonas Friddle is a singer, songwriter and Old-Time banjo player whose songs have received The John Lennon Songwriting Award, First Place in the Great American Song Contest and a nomination for Album of the Year in the Independent Music Awards.  His tunes bear the marks of a musician who has done his time in pub sessions and square dance halls, and his writing is full of imagery, honesty and humor.   His website is www.jonasfriddle.com.Friddle was raised in the mountains of North Carolina and learned to play guitar on a yard sale Harmony six string. He was already writing songs by the time he got to Kentucky at age eighteen. There, the bluegrass pickin' and old-time dances turned him on to the power and joy of traditional folk music.  He added a mandolin, fiddle and banjo to his arsenal and got a job slapping bass with the college bluegrass band. After serving his time in higher education, he spent a year traveling around the world playing music in pubs and living rooms. In 2007 Jonas landed in Chicago, started the Barehand Jugband, the Sleepy Lou Old-Time duo and began teaching at the Old Town School of Folk Music. Since then he has released multiple studio albums under his own name and with the folk supergroup “The Majority.” During that time his music has won multiple awards and been featured online at American Songwriter, Huffington Post and Paste.  Recent years have brought Friddle's focus back to songwriting and with the release of his latest album “The Last Place to Go” he puts out his best songs yet. A collection of sung stories backed by the sound of drums, fiddle, dobro, electric guitar, bass, organ and trumpet.  “[Friddle] deftly explores just about every nook and cranny of modern folk, from revivalist antique appropriation to protest songs to modern love songs. The immaculate arrangements would sell it, if his lithe voice hadn't already given it away. Jessica Stuart is a multi-instrumentalist and an acclaimed songwriter with an international fan base. Not only taking the lead on stage, she's also a skilled producer and in-demand side person working across genres. I've known Jessica for over a decade and have been inspired by her since our collaborations on stage as performing songwriters. I was especially moved when I saw  a documentary she both stars in and composed the soundtrack for. The CBC documentary, spearheaded by Oscar winning director Daniel Roher, follows Jessica's decades-later return to Japan to look for her childhood friend who had mysteriously disappeared. In our chat, she talks about the shock of the film's viral, worldwide reach with millions watching the most intimate moments in her search for someone she thought she'd lost forever. We had so much to catch up on and I was eager to ask Jessica about what she has learned on her way to becoming a top-tier musician, touring internationally and earning big stage opportunities with major musical theatre productions. We talk about what is worth working towards- like better conditions for musicians to be appreciated.  Beyond her creative projects, Jessica opens up about going to therapy and changing her perspective on making confident choices. She told me about how deepening her focus by refusing to compromise on quality has led to both better work life balance and more exciting career opportunities.  We dive into an ongoing success first born from a rejection: her songwriters' residency “JS Presents”, held monthly at Toronto's treasured haven for musicians, the Tranzac Club. She has created a reflective space of her own for her and other songwriters to perform in an intimate “listening room” setting, where artists are given the respect and compensation they deserve- along with the opportunity to world debut a new composition!  Jessica's dedication to building spaces for musicians to feel safe in experimenting and creating shines through wherever she goes. This episode brought back so many music making memories for me, and even if you aren't a musician yourself, I know you'll connect with Jessica's story. - - - When Vancouver-born, guitarist, koto player, vocalist and songwriter Jessica Stuart moved to Toronto, quitting work as vintage clothing buyer for a career in music, her goals were simple – release an album of original songs, hear her music on the radio, and satisfy her wanderlust on tour around the world. Stuart's trio The Jessica Stuart Few checked the final box with their first Asian tour (and Top 40 single in Japan) in 2013, and since then, have played music festivals and been heard on airwaves from Australia to Germany and beyond. Sum, a specialist in AI with a rich background in music, copywriting, and creative direction, brings a unique perspective to this discussion. Sum's journey is as diverse as it is impressive. He has worked with tech giants like Microsoft, Fox, and Disney in research and community management, and his expertise extends to music streaming, where he trained music discovery algorithms for some of today's biggest platforms. His creative flair is not just confined to technology; he's also a celebrated musician and a two-time Independent Music Award nominee, featuring his work in major TV shows and video games. Sum emphasized the critical need for creatives to discuss AI in our conversation. AI continues to play a pivotal role in our industry, and there's a growing concern among creatives about embracing this technology. Many fear it might render their roles obsolete or drastically alter their work. Sum addresses these concerns, advocating for a safe space where creatives can openly discuss the challenges and opportunities AI presents. Sum's passion for this subject is evident as he talks about the necessity for leadership to involve creatives in conversations about AI. He believes that doing so ensures that their voices are heard, and their roles are preserved and adapted in a way that benefits from AI advancements rather than being overshadowed by them. Beyond his professional accolades, Sum is also an activist, serving as Creative Director in Residence for the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition since 2020. His work in this area has helped to raise awareness about the expanding police surveillance state and the potential harms of artificial intelligence in predictive policing. This work earned a nomination for a Mozilla Foundation Creative Leadership Award in 2021. Sum's insights are not just limited to his professional experiences. As the Founding Principal and Creative Director at The Kizmet Experience Studio, he brings an interdisciplinary approach to creative direction, blending his extensive knowledge of AI with his creative expertise to forge new paths in the industry. Join us in this compelling episode as Sum Patten shares his invaluable insights on the role of AI in creativity, the importance of inclusive discussions in the tech industry, and the future of AI in shaping creative roles. He studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where he studied composing with John Adams and double bass with San Francisco Symphony bassists.[5]He worked with Van Morrison, Oingo Boingo, and David Grisman. His 1983 album Solo won Down Beat magazine's Record of the Year award. On the albums Duets and Trios, he worked with Bobby McFerrin, Rickie Lee Jones, Cheryl Bentyne, Lou Reed, Stéphane Grappelli, Jerry Garcia, Brian Wilson, Willie Dixon, Branford Marsalis, Bob Weir, Edie Brickell, Les Claypool, Neil Young, and Elvis Costello.Duets was nominated for three Grammy Awards. Bobby McFerrin won for "Brothers", which was performed with Wasserman. Wasserman also won Holland's Edison Award for Record of the Year. His 2000 album, Space Island, incorporated more contemporary musical elements. RatDog, which he co-founded with Bob Weir from the Grateful Dead, occupied much of his time. He toured extensively with Lou Reed.Wasserman was a judge for the sixth-tenth annual Independent Music Awards.[8]Rob Wasserman died on June 29, 2016. Cause of death was cancer.[9] Entombment was made in Salem Memorial Park and Garden at Colma, California.[10]                Willie Dixon (1915-1992) was one of the preeminent blues songwriters and performers of all time. The Grateful Dead covered a fairly lengthy list of his songs, attesting to his influence on the band: “Down in the Bottom,” “I Ain't Superstitious,” “I Just Want to Make Love To You,” “Little Red Rooster,” “The Same Thing,” “Spoonful,” and “Wang Dang Doodle.”            The song was written during the sessions for Rob Wasserman's Trios album. “Guitar Player” magazine ran an interview with Weir in 1993:“I had this chord progression and melody that I wanted to run by Willie to see if he liked it .... he did, so he started dashing off words. He wanted me to run a certain section by him again and stuff like that, and we started working on a bridge. Then he dashes off this sheet of lyrics and hands it to me. Now I'm really stoked to be working with the legendary Willie Dixon and I'm prepared for just about anything.“He hands these lyrics to me and I'm reading through them. And they seem, you know, awfully simplistic. Like there wasn't a whole lot to them....“....Now he wants me to read through it and sing the melody I have and see if they fit. And so I started singing through these simplistic lyrics, and that simplicity takes on a whole other direction.“By the time I had sung through them, it's like my head is suddenly eons wide. I can hear what's happening just sort of echoing around in there and I'm astounded by the simple grace of what he has just presented to me. I'm sitting there with my mouth open literally, and Willie's laughing. He's just sitting there laughing, saying, 'Now you see it. Now you see it. That's the wisdom of the blues.'”           David Dodd (author of Complete Grateful Dead Annotated Lyrics) – “Weir's songs from this era (anything from “Victim or the Crime” forward) seem aggressively innovative, shall we say. The rhythmic patterns, the big multi-layered chords, the changes in meter and tone, all add up to something that seems calculated to disrupt any comfort we might have been sinking into. OK, I didn't say that very well, but anyone who has struggled with these late-period Weir songs knows what I mean.”           SHOW #3:        Childhood's End                           Track No. 8                           3:10 – 4:15               A “new” Phil tune, first played July 24, 1994 at Deer Creek Music Center, Noblesville, IN              Played 11 times in concert              Last played July 9, 1995 at Soldier Field – last show              Never released on a studio album                “Childhood's End” on 7/20/94 – the last original Grateful Dead song to enter the live repertoire, written and sung by Phil Lesh.             Per John Hilgart of 4CPComics, the background story is that Lesh (and perhaps the others) felt that new songs would help fuel Garcia engagement in a period when Jerry was headed in the same direction as in the mid-1980s, when his drugged-out-bad-health put him in a coma that he narrowly survived – living on to drive the 1989-onward renaissance of the band. In the 1995 remake, Jerry died. The big musical difference between those two episodes is that everyone else in the band had their shit together in 1994, whereas the whole band was a mess in 1986.              John's general take on post-Brent 1990's Dead is that they were not to be dismissed – a band that had stopped depending on Garcia's leadership to determine the musical outcome, but who were always therefore also ready when Garcia was feeling spry. Weir has said something to that effect. And when Garcia was feeling spry, it was just as you would wish it to be. SHOW #4:        Way To Go Home                           Track No. 14                           2:59 – 4:12                           A “new” Vince song music by Vince and Bob Bralove, lyrics by Robert Hunter.              First played February 23, 1992 at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum              Played 92 times              Last played June 28, 1995 at The Palace of Auburn Hills, Auburn Hills               Also wrote Samba In The Rain for the Dead.               Bob Bralove is a keyboard–synthesizer player who worked as a sound technician with the Grateful Dead from 1986 to 1995. Throughout his tenure, he performed as an auxiliary musician throughout "Drums" and "Space", the band's signature aleatoric music segments.[1]Accordingly, he played a key role in their integration of MIDI technology (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a technical standard that describes a communications protocol, digital interface, and electrical connectors that connect a wide variety of electronic musical instruments, computers, and related audio devices for playing, editing, and recording music.[1]  ; Before the development of MIDI, electronic musical instruments from different manufacturers could generally not communicate with each other. This meant that a musician could not, for example, plug a Roland keyboard into a Yamaha synthesizer module. With MIDI, any MIDI-compatible keyboard (or other controller device) can be connected to any other MIDI-compatible sequencer, sound module, drum machine, synthesizer, or computer, even if they are made by different manufacturers.), first working with drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, keyboardist Brent Mydland, and later guitarist Bob Weir and synthesizer/piano player Vince Welnick. He also co-wrote several songs with Weir and Welnick, including "Picasso Moon" on Built to Last (1989) and "Way to Go Home" and "Easy Answers", which were slated to appear on the band's unfinished fourteenth studio album. (A live reconstruction, Ready or Not, was ultimately released in 2019 and contains both songs.) Perhaps his most significant project with the band was curating excerpts from "Drums" and "Space" on Infrared Roses, a 1991 compilation album. "Parallelogram" and "Little Nemo in Nightland" are some of his most notable "compositions" from this release.Bralove was also a member and producer of the Psychedelic Keyboard Trio, along with Welnick and fellow former Grateful Dead keyboardist Tom Constanten.[2] Bralove and Constanten also collaborated as Dose Hermanos, a showcase for their improvisational keyboard work; since 1998, they have toured irregularly and released five albums under the moniker. Bralove also worked with Stevie Wonder, setting up and programming Wonder's synthesizers including while he was touring.[3]  OUTRO:            Days Between                           Track No. 20                           5:55 – 7:24                           “new” Jerry tune              First played February 22, 1993 at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena              Played 42 times by the Dead              Last played June 24, 1995 at RFK Stadium in D.C.               It has become a favorite of the surviving band members, played the third night at the 50th Anniversary Shows at Soldier Field in 2015 and frequently played by Dead & Co. with Bobby singing,  Also played by Bob Weir and Wolf Bros. and Phil and Friends.  Great tune to end this episode.               David Dodd:  “Days Between” has come to be an anthem that makes us remember Garcia in a particular way, and, in particular, the days between his birth date of August 1 and his death date of August 9. It's a fitting song for such thoughts, with its big sweeping chords and its lyrics heavy with nostalgia and longing. There's a word in German, sehnsucht, that lacks a proper emotional counterpart in English, but which means, roughly, “longing.” It carries a sense of wishing you could see something—see something again, see something at all—that something is missing from your eyes and from your presence. I find that “Days Between” belongs with a raft of songs that induce this feeling in me.“Days Between,” a late song in the Robert Hunter / Jerry Garcia songbook, was perhaps their last collaboration on a big, significant song, one that ranks with “Dark Star” and “Terrapin Station” as ambitious and intentionally grand. (I was talking the other day with a friend, about Garcia's playing and songwriting, and the thought came up that Garcia, like few others, was unafraid of grandeur, and could successfully pull it off. Same with Hunter.) During its relatively short time in the live repertoire, they played it 41 times, always in the second set, and fairly frequently rising out of the Drums. Phil:  “I don't know whether to weep with joy at the beauty of the vision or with sadness at the impassable chasm of time between the golden past and the often painful present.”

A visionary and trendsetter since the early 1970s, Stanley's passion for both the musical and visual arts has perhaps been the key to the astonishing ongoing worldwide phenomenon known as KISS. The world has just lost one of the great guitarists of a generation, the maestro himself Jeff Beck! Jeff represented so much for musicians because of his never ending strive for tone and proficiency as a guitar gunslinger. He reached millions through his decades of stellar recordings and performances that permeated our souls. He is the father of modern guitar instrumental music and pioneered the path for such guitarists as Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, Al Di Meola and countless others. He was truly a risk taker and forged ahead in new styles of music that very few would ever dare to tread.“Jeff was a hero of mine on many levels. He gave us so much wonderful electric guitar music to enjoy. R.I.P. Jeff Beck.”Joe Satriani“There are few musicians in history who transcend their instrument of choice and reach a level of pure, beautiful expression. We are all so fortunate to have lived in a time when one of those rare gods walked the earth and shared his gift with all of us.  Safe travels, Maestro.”Dean Brown (David Sanborn) “I had the honor of being featured together with Jeff on Tina Turner's recording of Private Dancer. Watching him in action Jeff had the innate ability to make one feel like both giving up on the guitar and trying harder at the same time. The God of Guitar Gods, there will never be another like Jeff Beck.”Hal Lindes (Hal Lindes)"In 1966, when I first heard the Yardbirds “Shapes of Things” … double lead guitar solo was so exciting it defined psychedelic rock and undoubtedly influenced Jimi Hendrix. There will never be another Jeff Beck, a once in a generation talent."Carl Verheyen (Supertramp) GUITAR TRAX is hosted by mulit-Emmy award winning guitarist Brian Tarquin featuring in- depth interviews with today's hottest guitar legends and airs every Monday night from 10pm-12pm on WFIT 89.5FM on the Florida space coast and can be streamed on WFIT.org. September 29, 2021: Whirling fiercely in the wake of wildfires, fear-induced headlines and a pandemic in its path was the too-real tornado that struck Nashville in March 2020. Admittedly shaken up by the storm, Folk-Americana singer/songwriter Calista Garcia snapped out of fear by turning to music… specifically, “Banana Pancakes” by Jack Johnson. As howling winds have continued over the past year, Calista has kept her calm by tapping back into this feeling through renewed awareness of the beauty that remains. On nature walks by her house, for example, she has come to notice how the canopies of leaves wave hello as she walks by; it is from this tender place, she has created a musical world to reflect what she has witnessed. Lending her lyrics now to listeners, Calista Garcia's “A Beautiful World” EP, out October 29th, 2021, provides refuge through the power of rose-colored perspective. “I created ‘A Beautiful World' to be an expression of radical optimism,” Calista shares. “Optimism, not because life is full of sunshine and rainbows, but rather in spite of how tough it can be... I think holding knowledge of the bad and still believing good can prevail is the bravest thing we can do.” As she has accessed hope through songwriting, Calista has found herself writing the EP in solitude from safe places like the park benches nearby, her piano and the floor of her bedroom. Notably, the only co-write on the EP, “After You're Gone,” came from a Zoom collaboration with Rachel Weisbart and Patrick Oberstaedt of the Gender Gnomes; speaking to the loss of family members during the pandemic, this song has already moved listeners to tears including composer/lyricist Andrew Lippa. Produced by Buddy Speir and Calista Garcia at 38 North Studio, “A Beautiful World” was engineered by Sean Russell (Damien & Stephen Marley, Allison Krauss, Bruno Mars), mixed by Grammy Award Winner Jim Scott of Plyrz Studios (The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Sting, Foo Fighters) and mastered by Grammy Award Winner Richard Dodd (Dixie Chicks, Tom Petty, Boz Scaggs). Featured musicians include Calista Garcia (vocals, acoustic, electric and resonator guitar, harmonica, Wirlitzer electric piano), Buddy Speir (acoustic & electric guitar, Wurliter electric piano, percussion), Harrison Finks (Hammond B3 organ, piano), Eric Scott (bass, backing vocals), Ben Tufts (drums, percussion), Denise Garcia (backing vocals) and Jim Scott (percussion). Without question, Calista Garcia's fiercely-hopeful disposition has continued to propel her music career forward. In spite of its challenges, 2021 has managed to be a hallmark year as Calista was recently nominated Chris Austin Songwriting Finalist at MerleFest, playing a summer of live shows alongside Bad Cameo and as a part of Show X's tour with The Last Real Circus. Previous releases include her critically-acclaimed debut EP “Wild Woman” (2019) which was selected in the 2020 Independent Music Awards for “Best Roots/Country EP,” recognized by the International Music Awards (IAMA), International Songwriting Competition (ISC) and the Mid-Atlantic Songwriting Contest (MASC). In addition, Calista Garcia's extensive musical history includes her title as 2020's National YoungArts Gold Winner in Voice/Singer-Songwriter, 2021 Alicia Key's She is the Music Foundation Songwriting Fellow, 2020 Johnny Mercer Songwriting Project Fellow, 2017-18 Berklee Performance Showcase Winner, 2017 Bernard Ebbs Young Songwriter of the Year and two-time Grammy Foundation Young Songwriter Program Artist. As Calista continues to shine light onstage, tour plans continue with an upcoming show at The Birchmere alongside the renowned Rick Wakeman of “Yes” on October 24th, 2021. In Calista's words, “My greatest wish is that this song helps you as a listener let go of your fears, and feel a little freer from your hangups. This really is a beautiful world we get to live in.” -https://www.themarketingmixtape.com/pressrelease-abeautifulworld --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/loveletterstovirginia/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loveletterstovirginia/support
