Stephanie Johnson's journey began with earning her Master of Science in Integrated Marketing Communications and gaining experience at a safety association. That path led her relocate to Denver and join AlphaGraphics, where she rapidly ascended from her initial role as Marketing Campaign Manager in 2019, to her present position, VP of Marketing for AlphaGraphics, POSTNET and World Options, All three of these brand flags flying under the umbrella of MBE Global.    AlphaGraphics operates approximately 230 franchises across the U.S. focusing on providing printing and marketing solutions for businesses, small and large. Her Marketing team is charged with increasing brand awareness and lead generation through national campaigns while improving internal communications with franchise owners. In response to COVID-19, AlphaGraphics boosted their marketing efforts with a campaign that offered $25,000 brand makeovers to small businesses, served by their franchisees. This was followed by their wildly successful “Bring Your Brand to Life” initiative, emphasizing storytelling via high-quality videos. In mid-November, the Medill School of Journalism, Media, and Integrated Marketing Communications at Northwestern University issued its annual  "State of Local News Project" report, which now counts 6,000 newspapers in the United States, which comprises approximately 1,200 dailies and 4,790 weeklies. This year, the study also reported on 550 digital-only local news outlets, 700 ethnic media organizations and 225 public broadcasting stations producing original local news. The report's executive summary stated, "There was both good news and bad news for local journalism this past year. The good news raised the possibility that a range of proposals and programs could begin to arrest the steep loss of local news over the past two decades and, perhaps, revive journalism in some places that have lost their news. The headlines on the bad news resoundingly conveyed the message that urgent action is needed in many venues — from boardrooms to the halls of Congress — and by many, including civic-minded organizations and entrepreneurs." Some of the report's key findings include: There are now 204 counties with no local news outlet. Of the 3,143 counties in the U.S., more than half, or 1,766, have either no local news source or only one remaining outlet, typically a weekly newspaper.  The loss of local newspapers ticked higher in 2023 to an average of 2.5 per week, up from two per week last year. There were more than 130 confirmed newspaper closings or mergers this past year.  Since 2005, the U.S. has lost nearly 2,900 newspapers. The nation is on pace to lose one-third of all its newspapers by the end of next year. About 6,000 newspapers remain — the vast majority of which are weeklies. The country has lost almost two-thirds of its newspaper journalists, or 43,000, during that same time. Most of those journalists were employed by large metro and regional newspapers. There are about 550 digital-only local news sites, many of which launched in the past decade, but they are primarily clustered in metro areas. In the past five years, the number of local digital startups has roughly equaled the number that shuttered. Based on the demographics and economics of current news desert counties, Medill's modeling estimates that 228 counties are at an elevated risk of becoming news deserts in the next five years. Most of those “Watch List” counties are in high-poverty areas in the South and Midwest, and many serve communities with significant African-American, Hispanic, and Native American populations.  New this year was a "Bright Spots" map that showed the local news startups in the U.S., highlighting 17 outlets they labeled “with promising new business models for the future.” In this episode of "E&P Reports," we un-pack Medill's 2023 "State of Local News" report with co-authors Senior Associate Dean Tim Franklin and Visiting Professor Penelope Muse ("Penny") Abernathy as we investigate their latest findings and methodology, as well as what this data means when it comes to the future of local journalism in the U.S.

The train derailment disaster in East Palestine, Ohio catapulted the degraded condition of the US's freight rail network into national consciousness. But workers have been sounding the alarm for years. Long hours, short staffs, poor sick leave, and dangerously extended trains have raised the risks inherent in railroad operations for workers and the public in order to fatten the profit margins of corporate rail carriers. While the Department of Transportation has called for stricter regulation in the wake of East Palestine and other recent disasters, rank-and-file workers say it's not enough. The problem is not simply one of inadequate regulation, but the power of private, profit-driven interests to shape what is ultimately public infrastructure. Thus comes the call to nationalize the railroads. But how might this be accomplished, and how effectively can it solve the problems plaguing the rail system today? Journalist and professor Kari Lyderson and former Railroad Workers United General Secretary Ron Kaminkow join TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez to discuss current issues in the US rail system, and the potential solutions nationalization could offer.Kari Lyderson is a Chicago-based journalist, author and assistant professor at Northwestern University, where she leads the investigative specialization at the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications. This week John presents a special NFL Draft Edition featuring a duo of current and former NFL players here to break down their NFL experiences and predictions for the 2023 draft. To kick things off, John welcomes New York Giants linebacker Bobby Okereke to discuss his rise from Stanford to the NFL. Bobby and John discuss a number of key insider facts about NFL contract provisions and the quest for the all important second contract that is key for all players looking to secure their long-term financial futures.  Bobby Okereke began his playing career at Foothill High School in Santa Ana, California.  He would commit to Stanford University for his collegiate career and redshirt his freshman year before seeing ample playing time throughout his career. Bobby finished his career at Stanford with 240 tackles with 19 tackles for a loss and 10.5 sacks. After his Stanford career Bobby was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the third round with the 89th overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft. After three years with the Colts Bobby agreed to a four year contract with the New York Giants in March 2023.  In the second half of the show John welcomes former Green Bay Packers fullback and Morgan Stanley Financial Advisor Danny Vitale for an insider look at the mechanics of NFL contracts and wealth management for professional athletes. Danny played for Northwestern University beginning his freshman season in 2012. He was named to the Academic All-Big Ten three times, during his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons.   While at Northwestern, Vitale majored in Economics with minors in Business Institutions and Integrated Marketing Communications. After a successful stint with the Green Bay Packers, Danny has parlayed his professional sports experience with that Northwestern degree to become a wealth management advisor with Morgan Stanley. The FBI executed a search of Donald Trump's Palm Beach, FL residence on Monday, suggesting that the Department of Justice could be edging closer to bringing criminal charges against the former president. News of the raid prompted house minority leader Kevin McCarthy to issue a statement accusing the DOJ of “weaponized politicization” and warning Attorney General Merrick Garland to “preserve your documents and clear your calendar.” Meanwhile, a federal appellate court ruled Tuesday that the House Ways and Means Committee may legally obtain Trump's tax returns from the I.R.S. We'll talk about the legal and political implications of both developments and how Republican officials are responding. On June 29th, 2022, the Local News Initiative at The Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications of Northwestern University released their latest study, “The State of Local News 2022, Expanding News Deserts, Growing Gaps, Emerging Models.”  The primary author of the report is Penelope Muse Abernathy, who is nationally known for her “news deserts” research and acts as visiting professor at Northwestern and has served as Knight Chair in Journalism at the University of North Carolina. Abernathy has also held executive positions with The New York Times and Wall Street Journal. The study confirms that U.S. newspapers rapidly continue to close at an average rate of more than two a week, with the country losing more than one-fourth since 2005 as of publication date leaving only 6,377 surviving papers with 1,230 reported as dailies and 5,147 as weeklies.  Moreover, the study states that this loss of local journalism has been accompanied by the “malignant spread of misinformation and disinformation, political polarization, eroding trust in media, and a yawning digital and economic divide among citizens.”  And when a local news source dies, so does voter participation while corruption in both government and business rise along with taxes. Over the last two seasons, we have had the great opportunity to catch up with sports communication scholars. It may seem like we have gone a little overboard. Maybe. But, since many of us are consumers of sports media and many of us watching huge sporting events, these conversations about representations of athletes in a sports media context help us shape our perspective the next time we engage in sports viewing. Today's conversation is not too different. Today, we catch up with Dr. Amy Head Jones, who is the Director of Integrated Marketing Communication and an Associate Professor of Digital Communications at the University of West Alabama. Amy Head Jones grew up in Shelbyville, Kentucky in a family of sports enthusiasts. She began playing golf at the age of three, competitive golf at the age of eight, and concluded her amateur athletic career on an athletic scholarship at the University of New Orleans. During this time, Amy gained experience in the media and sport industries while working in public relations for the New Orleans Superdome and New Orleans Arena. This experience led her to pursue additional graduate education in these areas. She continued to work in the sport and media industries, serving as a graphic designer for bby Publications and as a golf teaching professional at Big Spring Country Club. In the spring of 2007, she was hired as a journalism and speech professor at UWA, a position she still holds today. Amy enjoys spending time with her husband Michael and son Rock, while supporting UWA athletics, exercising, playing golf, and attending University concerts, plays and pageants.
