A cargo ship carrying over 3,000 vehicles, including hundreds of EVs and hybrids, has sunk off Alaska following a fire that burned for nearly three weeks. Investigators are still probing whether the fire started in the area where electric vehicles were stored, highlighting growing concerns about EV safety during ocean transport, not to mention in everyday driving. Tesla finds itself in legal hot water in France over its Full Self-Driving system. French regulators accuse the automaker of misleading marketing, improper prepayment handling, and misrepresenting the vehicle's autonomous capabilities, warning Tesla it has until October to correct the issues or face substantial daily fines. And as our final news story, a federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration's freeze on $5 billion in EV charger infrastructure funding. The ruling allows 14 states to move forward with their clean transportation projects, challenging what one judge views as an unlawful and abrupt policy shift. Sobre un trazado que combina los 24,358 km del Nordschleife con el bucle completo del circuito GP (sin la chicane Mercedes-Arena), 136 equipos y más de 450 pilotos se lanzaron a una vorágine de 170 curvas por vuelta, cambiante como pocas. Ni las nuevas normas de “Slow Zones” —que este año se ampliaron a 31 sectores— ni la obligatoriedad de rodar con un mapeado de motor específico durante las horas nocturnas restaron espectacularidad: la carrera promedió 195 km/h para los GT3 punteros y volvió a batir récord de público con 235.000 espectadores a lo largo de la semana. La parrilla 2025 estuvo encabezada por 26 coches de la categoría SP9/GT3, auténtica referencia de la prueba. Audi Sport llegó con el nuevo R8 LMS Evo III-24h, ligeramente retocado para acomodarse al “Balance of Performance” tras el dominio de 2024, pero fue BMW quien marcó la pauta inicial gracias al M4 GT3 “25 Years” con paquete aerodinámico Nürburgring. Tras una salida en seco a 19 °C, la niebla nocturna obligó a neutralizar la prueba entre las 03:12 y las 04:47; de nuevo el nuevo reglamento de “Full Course Slow-Zones” evitó la bandera roja, y los equipos exprimieron cada segundo para jugar con los compuestos “cut slick” desarrollados por Michelin y Falken ex profeso para 2025. El amanecer trajo la segunda gran dosis de drama: el Porsche #911 Manthey-EMA, líder hasta ese momento, sufrió un pinchazo lento en el Flugplatz que desembocó en un trompo salvado por centímetros. Aquella incidencia entregó el mando al BMW #98 ROWE Racing, que mantendría la cabeza hasta meta pese al acoso del Mercedes-AMG #3 GetSpeed y del Audi #15 Scherer Sport PHX, este último rubricando la vuelta rápida definitiva en 8:05.442. Desde un punto de vista estratégico la clave residió en los stints largos de 9-10 vueltas gracias al consumo optimizado por los mapas “Eco-Boost” de turbo y la grada de 8.000 aficionados en el “Mutkurve” volvió a vibrar con la épica final: Dries Vanthoor defendió los ataques de Jules Gounon con un margen de apenas 5,7 s tras 154 giros, lo que sitúa a BMW como la marca más laureada de la carrera (22 triunfos) por delante ya de Porsche. En las entrevistas post-meta, los pilotos coincidieron en señalar la exigencia mental extrema: más de 650 adelantamientos documentados en la noche y 48 “Code-60” obligan a recalcular lo aprendido curva a curva. Más allá de la crónica deportiva, Nürburgring 24h 2025 reafirmó su condición de laboratorio móvil. Shell presentó un E-Fuel sintético 80 % neutro en carbono que se probó en el Porsche Cayman “718 GT-E” de la Universidad de Aachen; Bosch testó un LIDAR-over-Ethernet para banderas electrónicas; y la DMSB oficializó la telemetría abierta para los “flag marshals” que reduce el tiempo de intervención médica un 22 %. Un campeonato que nació en 1979 y que ha sido cuna de grandes pilotos, momentos históricos y una constante evolución técnica que la ha convertido en la categoría más avanzada de turismo en Sudamérica. Su legado es enorme: marcas oficiales como Toyota, Renault, Chevrolet u Honda han escrito páginas gloriosas en su historia, e incluso fue la primera categoría del mundo en disputar una carrera dentro de un estadio, en aquel inolvidable evento de La Plata en 2013. Hoy, más de cuatro décadas después, el TC2000 inicia una nueva etapa sin renunciar a su identidad. Lo más llamativo de esta transformación es su giro hacia los SUV, una decisión que no solo responde a una tendencia de mercado sino que propone una conexión directa con lo que hoy vemos en las calles y concesionarios. Se trata de la primera categoría del mundo en convertir SUV de serie en auténticas máquinas de competición, con modelos como el Toyota Corolla Cross, el Volkswagen Nivus, el Chevrolet Tracker o el Honda ZR-V. Una apuesta clara por mantener el ADN del TC2000: coches reales, llevados al extremo, con tecnología de competición. Hablamos también de cómo se desarrolló esta nueva generación de vehículos, gracias a un equipo técnico de primer nivel liderado por Gustavo Estrada, ingeniero vinculado a Mercedes-AMG, y Stephane Basque, desde BaseN Engineering. El resultado es espectacular: motores turbo de cinco cilindros fabricados en Argentina con 500 caballos de potencia, aerodinámica activa con efecto suelo, alerones móviles, un sonido demoledor y una velocidad máxima que supera los 300 km/h. Todo esto hace del nuevo TC2000 la categoría de tracción delantera más rápida del planeta, y una referencia técnica y sensorial. El cambio ha tenido un gran impacto también en los equipos y pilotos. Marcas como Toyota y Honda han reafirmado su compromiso con programas oficiales y apoyo directo desde fábrica, mientras que nombres como Matías Rossi, Leonel Pernía o Tiago Pernía están siendo protagonistas de esta revolución. La competición se ha vuelto más intensa, con más potencia, más oportunidades de adelantamiento y un sistema de Balance of Performance que mantiene la igualdad y la emoción en pista. With the team at Mercedes-AMG putting the V12-powered S65 out to pasture a handful of years ago, the highest-performance S-Class has become the 4.0-liter-powered S63. This latest iteration in the long line of hopped-up S-Class machines blends the aforementioned 4.0-liter with an electric motor at the rear axle. Powering this 188 hp electric motor is a 13.1kWh battery pack that can be recharged. According to Mercedes-AMG, this plug-in hybrid system was derived from the hybrid system that powers the brand's Formula 1 machine. Of course, that electric motor at the rear works with the 604 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque from the internal combustion engine and gives the latest S63 a staggering 791 hp and 1,055 lb-ft of torque – not bad for a luxury cruiser. According to Mercedes-AMG, this combination is good enough to rocket this 5,831-pound car to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds. Slotted below the C-Class, the Mercedes-Benz CLA expanded the Mercedes-Benz coupe and sedan lineup when it came onto the scene in 2013. Shrinking the styling of the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, the CLA-Class is a swoopy alternative to the statelier C-Class with a lower starting price. Building on its first generation, Mercedes-Benz rolled out the second-generation CLA-Class in 2019 and carried along the wild AMG 45 into the next generation. Splitting the difference between the fire-breathing AMG CLA 45 and the more subdued CLA 250 is the CLA 35. Powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4, this CLA promises an AMG-enhanced powertrain that delivers 302 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. That power travels through an eight-speed automatic transmission and into the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. We admit the Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 isn't quite as sleek and sexy-looking as its sibling, the GLA, but when you're at the controls of the compact sports utility, it immediately ceases to matter. The influx of 300+ horsepower is the biggest reason. Suddenly, you're not operating a mundane grocery-getter, but instead, you find yourself piloting an agile, goes-where-you-point-it sports sedan that just happens to be almost five and a half feet tall. The Motor Press Guild's annual Drive Day gave Host Jack Nerad the chance to reacquaint himself with the joys of the AMG GLB 35 4Matic+, which is the hot rod of the GLB lineup. At $59,050, it not only features an AMG-tuned version of a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that delivers 302 horsepower, but also a well-tuned sport suspension that includes a multi-link rear. With giant brakes, 19-inch alloy wheels, and low-profile tires, the mashup proves irresistible. Nerad will tell you more in this episode. While EVs aren't selling as well as many had hoped, they are certainly using a lot of electricity. A new study shows how much and where. Of course, the expanded use of electricity has a lot of implications, and we'll explore them in this episode. In other news, Tesla hasn't been able to persuade California to call off its investigation into the way it has marketed its self-driving technology. And Toyota is doubling down on hydrogen despite the fact its Mirai hydrogen fuel cell vehicle has not garnered many sales. Both of those stories are worth exploring, too. These days, over a trillion semiconductor microchips are made and shipped each year. The industry is worth eye-watering amounts, and since the 2020-2023 global shortage, nearly all governments are trying to get a slice of the industrial wafer.But what was it like just 40 years ago trying to get yourself a home computer when your communist leaders didn't approve, and there were nowhere enough devices to go round anyway? Andrada Fiscutean spoke to some of the bootleggers.These days, not only are computing devices in just about everyone's hands, they are mostly interconnected to vast arrays of machines collectively forming “the cloud”, which provides so much of our economic and scientific infrastructure. It is no longer about stand alone computing. But just maybe the deep future of computing lies in using individual atoms and photons as information-bearing digits. This is the basis of “quantum computing” which could use the properties and mechanics of the quantum scale to perform hugely complicated calculations in fractions of a second. Prof David Lucas of Oxford University physics department and colleagues are building some key demonstrators of the techniques we need to master. And just recently, they built an impressive manifestation of “Blind Quantum Computing”, which just might enable something like the quantum cloud of the future.Also, we have a look at an app for modern motorists that adjusts a piece of music to react to the movement of the car. Tom and guest host Paul Herrold of the Sons of Speed covered a number of topics this week. First, the hosts addressed the surprise Rivian reveal of not one, but two, small crossovers last week, both of which are scheduled to be built at the maker's existing Illinois facility. Both will be much more affordable than Rivian's current offerings. Also, the Chevrolet Blazer EV is back in production, this after a stop-sale was ordered by the brand as a result of software issues. Listen for details regarding the Blazer's return to production, and significant price cuts. Still in the first segment, Paul shared the scoop on a pair of excellent Sons of Speed-produced “The Lap” videos, one featuring a collectible Dodge Challenger, the other a rather rare—and high-performance—Mercedes-AMG product. In the second segment, the hosts welcome Randy Dale of Nissan to the program. Randy walked Tom and Paul through the updates to the 2024 Nissan Sentra, which Tom feels has become a far better vehicle—and a great value. In the last segment Paul is subjected to Tom's “Who Made More” quiz, which Tom expected Paul to fail. Did he? The hosts wrapped up the show covering a number of subjects, including the impressive interiors of Hyundai and Genesis cars and crossovers.
Some high-tech luxury cars enter the Unnamed Automotive Podcast garage this week, as Sami finally shares his experience driving the totally redesigned 2024 BMW X2.
