Ugh. I love & hate long weekends. Love them for the extra day off…hate them because they come to an inevitable end. We started today off with a rundown of our Memorial Day activities, and we recapped all the NBA, NHL, & racing action from the long, holiday weekend. Let you know what's new on New Release Tuesday, and discussed some of the deals you can take advantage of on "National Hamburger Day". It's also "National Brisket Day" today! Had a great story about a kid in NY that was born without a left hand that recently got a serious upgrade! Apparently, women are no longer interested in Dad bods…they're looking for rodent-faced men thanks to the new Zendaya film. Glorious day for Major League Baseball as Angel Hernandez is retiring immediately, and a tough weekend for Mike Tyson! Take a look in your wallet…your two $1 bills might be worth THOUSANDS! The phones sorta work, so we were able to talk to Grant Bilse from the Wisco Sports Show this morning, and during today's "Bad News with Happpy Music", we had stories about an actor who got killed over a catalytic converter, a traffic jam on Mount Everest, a Mayor in MO that had to resign because the cops killed a deaf & blind dog, a man on a cruise ship who jumped into the ocean, a stabbing at a movie theater in MA, a couple of pickpockets who stole an elderly man's wallet & bought a bunch of gift cards, a woman who called 911 so they could tase a raccoon at her house, a guy who's trying to visit every Pizza Ranch in the country, and a wedding reception that ended in gunfire. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette Digital News Desk, and I'm here with your update for Thursday, July 6.According to the National Weather Service, Thursday should be sunny in the Cedar Rapids area with a high of 80 degrees. The low temperature will settle in at 53 degreesAbortion access in Iowa would be restricted under legislation that statehouse Republicans plan to craft next week during a special session of the Iowa Legislature, called for Wednesday by Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds. The special session will take place Tuesday at the Iowa Capitol. The special session will be conducted “with the sole purpose of enacting legislation that addresses abortion and protects unborn lives,” the governor's news release said.Three Iowa House Republican lawmakers told The Gazette-Lee Des Moines Bureau that they expect Republicans will once again pass legislation that would ban abortions once a fetus' heartbeat can be detected.Currently, abortion in Iowa is legal until the 20th week of pregnancy. Some major medical organizations, like the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, note that what is detected at six weeks is not a heartbeat, but instead electrical impulses, and that an actual heartbeat does not occur until roughly 17 to 20 weeks of pregnancy.Police in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City received hundreds of complaint calls about fireworks in the four days around the Fourth holiday this year, though the totals were down from previous years. It's illegal for individuals to set off fireworks in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, though people can fire off consumer fireworks in some surrounding cities and in unincorporated Linn County during certain hours.A state law amended two years ago made it illegal for cities to ban the sale of fireworks or limit their sale to certain areas, like industrial zones. But individual cities and counties still can restrict their discharge. In Cedar Rapids, police received 410 fireworks-related calls for service between Saturday and Tuesday. In the same time period last year, police had 426 calls for service, down from 595 in 2021 and 750 in 2020.Police issued 11 citations for illegal fireworks usage in the city over the four days, the same number as last year, but down from 15 in 2021 and 24 in 2020.Iowa City saw similar decreases The Solomon's Landing development — a $20 million project that seeks to create an “entertainment district” just north of Penn Street in North Liberty — will receive city tax incentives worth up to $7.5 million. The North Liberty City Council during a brief special session this week approved a development agreement authorizing tax increment payments. The city agreed to make eight annual payments not to exceed $7.5 million to reimburse a portion of taxes. The agreement approved Monday is between the city and Pratt Real Estate Management. Developer Brandon Pratt, of North Liberty, is behind the project and had previously asked for financial assistance from the city. The proposed development includes a 34,000-square-foot indoor recreation building, as well as a 33,000-square-foot bowling entertainment center with an adjacent Pizza Ranch restaurant. The recreation building — called The Palestra — will be used for various indoor sports and community events. The entertainment facility would include bowling, ax throwing, arcade, billiards and a bar.

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Thursday, February 16.Snow returns Thursday. According to the National Weather Service there will be patch blowing snow starting mainly from before you wake up in the morning through 4 p.m. Three to seven inches of snowfall is the current predicted total. The high is predicted at 28 degrees, with a low of 6.In a precursor to a potential run for the White House, former Vice President Mike Pence took aim Wednesday at the Linn-Mar Community School District and its transgender-affirming policies during a rally in the early GOP nominating state.“No one should have a greater role over what our children are learning or the values they're being taught than their parents,” Pence said to a room full of parents and supporters at a Pizza Ranch in Cedar Rapids. The Linn-Mar policies, adopted last year but largely in place at many other school districts as well, spell out inclusive practices for transgender students, including giving them access to restrooms, locker rooms or changing areas that correspond with their chosen gender identity. Students in the seventh grade or above could request a “gender support plan” that calls for teachers and peers to address the student by a new name and new pronouns. The policy leaves it up to the students whether to notify parents.Pence said “average Americans have been dragged into a left-wing culture war” that has “invaded our schools, our colleges and our workplaces.”Pence did not say whether he will launch a 2024 White House run against his former running mate, former President Donald Trump, who already announced his campaign. Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who formally launched her presidential bid Wednesday, is scheduled to campaign in Urbandale and Marion early next week.Compounding the escalating costs associated with the University of Iowa's construction of its 14-story Stead Family Children's Hospital, campus officials are asking permission to spend $45 million replacing damaged windows on nine floors — tripling the $15 million they originally planned to spend replacing cracked or delaminated windows on two floors. If the Board of Regents next week approves the higher cost, UI plans to start replacing windows this spring — nearly four years after first discovering problems with windows on floors four and five in July 2019, just two years after the hospital opened in 2017.In UIHC's request for board approval to spend three times the planned amount, officials explained the problem is more widespread than surmised and the hospital is "experiencing systemic issues with the windows failing to perform consistent with the agreed upon specifications.”Iowa lawmakers once again are moving forward with a bill that would restrict the ability of cities like Cedar Rapids to use traffic enforcement cameras along interstates, state highways and county roadways.A three-member House Public Safety subcommittee this week advanced legislation, House File 173, that would prohibit municipalities from placing or using automated traffic enforcement systems along state and county roads within the city's boundaries, including state highways and interstates.Placement and use of such devices by cities would be restricted to city streets. However, the bill does not prohibit the Iowa Department of Transportation from placing and using the devices on primary roads, or a county from placing and using cameras on secondary roads. The bill also limits the civil penalty for a traffic citation captured by the traffic...

Welcome to the weekend! This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Saturday, January 28, and Sunday, January 29.First comes the snow, then comes the cold. According to the National Weather Service snow is likely in the Cedar Rapids area on Saturday. There will be a high near 22 degrees and an 80 percent chance of snowfall. Between 1 and 3 inches of snowfall is the current prediction. On Sunday it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 12 degrees. The wind chill will drop to as low as -10 degrees, with wind gusts as high as 25 mph. On Sunday night, the low temperature will settle in at 1 degree. The cold temperatures will continue into the beginning of next week.Four people were killed Friday morning and others were injured when a van they were in went out of control on a highway in northern Iowa. The crash happened a little before 7 a.m. when the driver of a westbound 15-passenger van lost control on icy Highway 20 near the small community of Wellsburg, in northwest Grundy County, according to the Iowa State Patrol. The van entered the median and rolled before coming to rest in the highway's eastbound lanes. One adult and three children under the age of five died. The state patrol noted that none of the van's occupants had been using using seatbelts or child restraint devices at the time of the accident.A proposed $20 million development in North Liberty would bring various amenities to the growing city and create a new entertainment district just north of Penn Street. The proposed development, referred to as Solomon's Landing, includes a 33,600-square-foot indoor recreation center, as well as a 32,909-square-foot bowling entertainment center with an adjacent Pizza Ranch restaurant.During his pitch for the district, Brandon Pratt of Lion Development Group told the North Liberty City Council this week the city needs to be a place where residents can “live, work and play.” He argued that with the support of the city, his development idea could be where the play comes in.The proposed indoor sports and recreation center — called The Palestra — would be used for various indoor sports and community events, Pratt said. The Palestra would be located on the west side of the lot at the corner of Saratoga Place and Hayes Lane.Possible activities include basketball, indoor soccer, football, volleyball, pickleball and wrestling, as well as e-gaming tournaments. Other features could include indoor inflatables, birthday parties and opportunities for seniors to have a place to walk indoors. The bowling facility and Pizza Ranch would be to the east of The Palestra with parking in between the buildings, the site plan showed.Iowa fell to No. 1 Penn State in wrestling Friday night.Iowa won three of the first four bouts, giving Iowa an 11-9 lead heading into intermissionBut Iowa only won one more bout the rest of the way, and Penn State pulled away 23 - 14. The loss snapped the Hawkeyes' 15-dual win streak.

In a discussion with Dairy on the Air host Andy Vance, Jon Moss, Chief Brand Officer/Senior Vice President at Pizza Ranch, shares how strategic partnerships between Pizza Ranch and Midwest Dairy have been mutually beneficial for driving demand during the pandemic and beyond. Moss details the original partnership that celebrated National Dairy Month in 2020 by offering free extra cheese to customers who purchased online. Moss also described how this initial partnership has now led to a more extensive partnership between Pizza Ranch and Midwest Dairy, along with other organizations with similar goals. This partnership has helped successfully launch Pizza Ranch’s frozen breakfast pizza line, which is a win-win for all involved, generating incremental sales and customer satisfaction across the board.

This episode really highlights the importance of the GM and retaining the General Manager over a longer timeframe. In January, before the COVID - 19 days were upon us. I had the pleasure of speaking with Ryan Achterhoff, the Chief Administrative Officer of Pizza Ranch, Inc. What I found is that he has more data to prove this point, than most. Ryan can show the direct correlation between profitability and the length of service by the General Manager. This is so encouraging and so important! Due to the dawn of celebrity chefs - restaurants have changed and are now more ever about the food. On the customer side, the change is… It's also about being a foodie and Instagram-able dishes, but I have to ask a very important question, “How can a general manager have a lasting impact on the people and the profits?” To get some answers, please listen and enjoy my conversation with Ryan Achterhoff. This was an extremely enlightening for me and I hope it is for you as well. Ryan Achterhoff currently serves as the Chief Administrative Officer for Pizza Ranch and has served in several roles in franchise development, restaurant consulting & operations, and supply chain management in his 17 years with the company. Ryan currently directs all legal affairs, strategic planning initiatives, and franchise relations efforts for the company; as well as Human Resource and people development activities. Prior to Pizza Ranch he worked in commercial lending and bank management for Iowa State Bank and Sales & Marketing management for a national promotional apparel and headwear manufacturer and distributor. Ryan currently serves as the chairperson for the Iowa Restaurant Association and on the Board of Directors for the Pizza Industry Council, an extension of the National Restaurant Association. A few days ago in a stadium far far away..... It is a period of Wildcard war. Underdog Vikings, striking from all over the field, have won their second recent playoff victory against the evil New Orleans Saints. During the battle, Vikings defenders managed to steal the football from the Saints ultimate weapon, DREW BREES, a hall of fame quarterback piloting an offense with enough firepower to destroy an entire secondary. Pursued by the Saints sinister bounty program, Kirk Cousin threw deep passes all over the field, and came away the custodian of a playoff win that can save Vikings fans and restore peace and justice to the NFL..... Come, let us worship! For your convenience, in the back corner of the sanctuary there is a room for any parents with children in need of a quiet place. The restrooms are located on the lower level. Please ask if you have any further questions or concerns. Lord Jesus, you took on our humanity and fought temptation. You were victorious! All praise to you for your perfect obedience! And miracle of miracles . . . you have credited this perfection to me. Thank you! AMEN.Christ’s Kingdom Grow through the Means of Grace:Christ’s kingdom exists only with the Word and Sacraments. Therefore, it is necessary to baptize little children, that the promise of salvation may be applied to them, according to Christ’s command to baptize all nations (Matthew 28:19). Just as in this passage salvation is offered to all, so Baptism is offered to all, to men, women, children, infants. It clearly follows, therefore, that infants are to be baptized, because salvation is offered with Baptism. Second, it is clear that God approves of the Baptism of little children. God’s approval of the Baptism of little children is shown by this: He gives the Holy Spirit to those baptized [Acts 2:38–39].Apology to the Augsburg Confession, Article 9 (Concordia p. 153)Because He Knew: He Would Died – He Would LiveWhy did Jesus keep moving toward the cross? Surely, he should have known this was coming. Surely, he could have avoided the pain, the suffering, the death. But that’s the point, Jesus knew all along he was going to die. That was the eternal plan of the Father, that the holy Son of God would suffer and die for a world of sinners. However, Jesus also knew that death would not be the end. The payment for sin would be accepted and he would rise to life again and defeat death itself, for us.How does the Temptation of Jesus solidify our Christian hope today?OPENING HYMN: 224 – God Himself is PresentLITURGY: Holy Baptism, CW p. 12Please rise.PRAYER OF THE DAY:M: Lord our strength, the battle of good and evil rages within and around us, and our ancient foe tempts us with his deceits and empty promises. Keep us steadfast in your Word, and when we fall, raise us up again and restore us through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. The WordFIRST READING: Genesis 22:1-18What do you love so much that it would be impossible to willingly and gladly give up if the Lord required it? The time of Lent is a call to serious struggle against sin, including the idolatry of loving anyone or anything more than God:Some time later God tested Abraham. He called to him, “Abraham!” Abraham answered, “I am here.” 2God said, “Now take your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains there, the one to which I direct you.” 3Abraham got up early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, along with Isaac his son. Abraham split the wood for the burnt offering. Then he set out to go to the place that God had told him about. 4On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go on over there. We will worship, and then we will come back to you.” 6Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and loaded it on Isaac his son. He took the firepot and the knife in his hand. The two of them went on together. ( . . . continued . . . )7Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father?” He said, “I am here, my son.” He said, “Here are the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” 8Abraham said, “God himself will provide the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So the two of them went on together. 9They came to the place that God had told him about. Abraham built the altar there. He arranged the wood, tied up Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar on top of the wood. 10Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. 11The Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham!” Abraham said, “I am here.” 12He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy. Do not do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” 13Abraham looked around and saw that behind him there was a ram caught in the thicket by its horns. Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14Abraham called the name of that place “The LORD Will Provide.” So it is said to this day, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.” 15The Angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven 16and said, “I have sworn by myself, declares the LORD, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17I will bless you greatly, and I will multiply your descendants greatly, like the stars of the sky and like the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the city gates of their enemies. 18In your seed all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.” PSALM: CWS 3 (Bulletin p. 6)SECOND READING: Romans 8:31-39Lent proves the love of God: God gave his own Son for us all. With this truth planted into our hearts, God gives us perseverance in all things: 31What then will we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32Indeed, he who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also graciously give us all things along with him? 33Who will bring an accusation against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies! 34Who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus, who died and, more than that, was raised to life, is the one who is at God’s right hand and who is also interceding for us! 35What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will trouble or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?36Just as it is written: For your sake we are being put to death all day long. We are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. 37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor rulers, neither things present nor things to come, nor powerful forces, 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. THEME VERSE: Matthew 4:10It is written: “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.” Thanks be to God.GOSPEL READING: Mark 1:12-15In his grace, God leads Gentiles to worship Christ:12The Spirit immediately sent Jesus out into the wilderness. 13He was in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels were serving him. 14After John was put in prison, Jesus went to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God. 15“The time is fulfilled,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near! Repent, and believe in the gospel.” This is the Gospel of our Lord Jesus.Praise be to you, O Christ!HYMN OF THE DAY: 201 – A Mighty Fortress is Our GodSERMON based on Mark 1: Only a Victorious Christ could Preach the GospelCONFESSION OF FAITH: Luther’s Explanation of Holy Baptism, from the Small Catechism (1529)M: What is Baptism?C: Baptism is not just plain water, but it is water used by God's command and connected with God's Word.M: Which is that Word of God?C: Christ our Lord says in the last chapter of Matthew, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”M: What does Baptism do for us?C: Baptism works forgiveness of sin, delivers from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe this, as the words and promises of God declare.M: What are these words and promises of God?C: Christ our Lord says in the last chapter of Mark, “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.”M: How can water do such great things?C: It is certainly not the water that does such things, but God's Word which is in and with the water, and faith which trusts this Word used with the water. For without God's Word the water is just plain water and not baptism. But with this Word it is baptism, that is, a gracious water of life and a washing of rebirth by the Holy Spirit.M: Where is this written?C: Saint Paul says in Titus, chapter three, “God saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is a trustworthy saying.” ( . . . continued . . . )M: What does baptizing with water mean?C: Baptism means that the old Adam in us should be drowned by daily contrition and repentance, and that all its evil deeds and desires be put to death. It also means that a new person should daily arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever.M: Where is this written?C: Saint Paul says in Romans, chapter six, “We were buried with Christ through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”OFFERINGPRAYER OF THE CHURCH & LORD’S PRAYER: p. 32The sacramentFor our Holy Communion practice, please see the purple sheet in the pew racks.COMMUNION LITURGY: p. 33DISTRIBUTION HYMN: 737 – God’s Own Child, I Gladly Say ItSONG OF THANKS: CW 316 (Purple sheet or hymnal)CLOSING HYMN: 752 – In Christ AloneNOTESAll are invited to celebrate Gideon’s baptism at noon at the Pizza Ranch.See the sign-up at the back of church for next week’s congregational bowling.Midweek Lenten worship continues with a 6 PM meal & 7 PM worship. Membership is about belonging to Christ, growing in faith, and sharing the joy of salvation together. We enjoy life together with a merciful God through faith, growing together as lifelong learners of Jesus, spending time together with one another in Christian friendship and support, and going out together into our communities and circles of friends to make a meaningful difference. Our new member process aims at nurturing those relationships, which includes but is not limited to an agreement together on the truths of the Bible. Unity of belief is the building block for life together with Christ, growing in faith together, and sharing in the joy of salvation together. Those who want to join Shepherd of the Lakes coming from other WELS or ELS churches will be familiar with our beliefs. Others experienced in another church, or who have little or no religious background at all, become members through participation in a Bible information class taught by Pastor Hagen. Many of our members have taken this class numerous times, as a reminder and refresher on the different teachings in God’s Word.Togetherness in beliefs then leads to a new member process that nurtures togetherness in relationships with God, church and community.Speak to Pastor Hagen if you’re interested. There is no charge. Even if you’re just curious, come check it out!
