This one's for anyone who's ever wanted to fall asleep to the sound of rain without actually getting rained on. I imagined a bed with the windows open, somewhere deep in a tropical forest at night... the air thick and warm, rain tapping steadily on leaves just outside, and nothing else demanding your attention. There's something about that kind of rain, the layered, textured sound of it hitting a whole canopy instead of just a roof, that feels different from a normal rainstorm. More alive, somehow. The script leans into that feeling, guiding you to relax through your whole body while the rain keeps its own quiet rhythm in the background. It's slow on purpose, no rush to get anywhere, just permission to sink in and let the forest do the rest. If you've had a version of this you loved before, or there's a setting you'd want next, I'm always open to it... this stuff works best when it's actually built around what helps people sleep, not just what sounds nice on paper.—

The other day, I was staring at my list of common Irregular Verbs, trying to think of a lesson I could create with 10 of them. Immediately, I saw some potential! Swing -> Swung, Broadcast -> Broadcast, Sleep -> Slept.  Somehow the clump of words I selected led me to one of the most bizarre stories I've ever heard about U.S. culture and history: Dance Marathons of the 1930s and 1940s. Imagine people dancing for days on end, even sleeping while dancing, for the chance to win some cash. It's a crazy story, and from the discovery of this event, this two-part episode was born.  Don't miss part 2! It's coming next week. In part one, you'll learn how to use the common expression “to keep someone on their toes,” you'll hear a joke, and you'll work on your American English pronunciation! The Hound of the Baskervilles, Chapter 14, by Arthur Conan Doyle — A Calming Bedtime Story for Sleep & Insomnia | Books at Bedtime A calming bedtime story to help you fall asleep — Chapter 14 of The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, read slowly and softly for anyone lying awake in the small hours. This is the chapter the whole book has been walking towards, and Conan Doyle gave it the same name as the novel itself. Holmes, Watson and Lestrade lie waiting among the rocks above Merripit House while a great white fog rolls in off the mire, thickening minute by minute over the one path they need to keep clear. What follows is the most famous night on Dartmoor in English fiction — and then, quietly, the unwinding of it. The long walk out across the Grimpen Mire the next morning, guided by wands planted in the peat. An old black boot lifted from the slime. An abandoned tin mine on an island in the bog, and the last of Stapleton's secrets laid bare in the daylight. There is no need to follow the plot tonight, and no need to reach the end. Let the rhythm of the Victorian prose and the hush of the moor after the fog has lifted do the work while your body settles. If you drift off in the first few minutes, that is exactly what this reading is for. Books at Bedtime is the sleep story series from Calming Anxiety, hosted by clinical hypnotherapist and former paramedic Martin Hewlett — alongside Coffee Break for the Soul and the daily ten-minute guided meditations. If classic audiobooks help you sleep, this series is written for those long, wakeful hours. You can take the whole library with you — download Anchored on iOS. Access over 3,000 searchable, offline-ready audio sessions, sleep stories with Books at Bedtime, and built-in nightlight features for the small hours.

In this episode, Dr. Gladden speaks with Dr. Hany Demian about the shift from reactive medicine to prevention, personalization, and longevity-focused care. Dr. Hany shares how his journey through breast surgery, emergency medicine, and chronic pain management led him to a more systems-based approach to health, aging, and healing. They discuss why aging may be better understood as a condition, how patient empowerment changes outcomes, and why nervous system regulation, stress reduction, and individualized care matter as much as diagnostics and therapies. "Sometimes I wonder if heaven will feel a bit like an afternoon nap," writes Brett McCracken in The Wisdom of Sleep. Maybe it's because naps are signpost of something far greater that we've not yet fully experienced. Maybe it's because even the most relaxing vacation, replenishing Sabbath, and restorative night's sleep are only teasers for the perfect rest we're wired to desire. Maybe there's more to sleep and rest than we think. Maybe in his mysterious sovereignty, God designed these things to be a sacred portal of sorts, a connective tissue between heaven and earth, between death and resurrection, between the God of rest and the restless souls who can't help but be magnetically tugged toward him. In this episode of the Influence Podcast, I talk to McCracken about these "maybes," what sleep reveals about God and us. I'm George P. Wood, executive editor of Influence magazine and your host. Brett McCracken is a senior editor at The Gospel Coalition, where he writes on the intersection of faith and culture. He is also author of The Wisdom of Sleep: How Rest Reveals God's Truth and Revives Weary Souls, published by Zondervan Reflective. How to Extend Your Healthspan with Dr. Sandeep Palakodeti Living longer is not the real goal. Living longer with the strength, energy, mental clarity, and independence to enjoy those years is what matters. In this episode of The Customer Service Revolution Podcast, John DiJulius speaks with Dr. Sandeep "Dr. Deep" Palakodeti, founder and CEO of Velocity Health and author of The Ultimate Asset: Extend Your Prime, Not Just Your Lifespan. They explore how proactive longevity medicine, personalized healthcare, better diagnostics, and sustainable lifestyle changes can help people extend their healthspan—not simply their lifespan. What Is the Difference Between Lifespan and Healthspan? Lifespan measures how long someone lives. Healthspan considers how many of those years are lived with physical capability, cognitive health, energy, and functional independence. Dr. Deep explains that most people do not simply want more years. They want to remain active, mentally sharp, and capable of caring for themselves as they age. John connects that goal to his philosophy of living an extraordinary life. Developing your full potential is not only about personal achievement; it affects your family, employees, customers, and everyone who depends on you. How Much of Our Health Is Determined by Genetics? Genetics can increase a person's risk for certain diseases, but increased risk does not always determine the outcome. Dr. Deep discusses how sleep, cardiovascular fitness, metabolic health, nutrition, exercise, and other environmental factors may influence long-term health. Understanding your risks can help you and your healthcare team make more informed decisions earlier. Why Is Traditional Healthcare Often Reactive? The traditional healthcare system frequently gives physicians limited time with each patient. This can make care feel rushed, impersonal, and focused on responding to problems after they appear. What Is Concierge Precision Medicine? Concierge precision medicine uses a smaller patient panel, longer appointments, advanced diagnostics, ongoing coaching, and more direct physician access to provide proactive, relationship-based care. Velocity Health uses a digital-first model that serves patients across all 50 states. Members work with a physician, concierge, and human performance specialist to understand their health data and build a personalized plan. Can Technology and Medication Replace Healthy Habits? No medication, supplement, or emerging therapy eliminates the need for sleep, nutrition, movement, strength training, and mental well-being. Dr. Deep explains that tools such as GLP-1 medications or hormone replacement therapy may provide momentum for appropriately selected patients under medical supervision. However, lasting results require sustainable behavioral change and professional guidance. What Are the First Steps Toward a Longer Healthspan? Dr. Deep recommends beginning with three areas: Improve the quality and consistency of your sleep. Measure meaningful health indicators under qualified professional guidance. Find a physician or healthcare team willing to provide personalized, relationship-based care. Key Takeaways Healthspan is more meaningful than lifespan when the goal is to remain active and independent. Genetics can affect disease risk without completely determining a person's future. Sleep, exercise, nutrition, metabolic health, and mental well-being remain foundational. Advanced diagnostics can reveal risks that routine healthcare may not identify early. Concierge medicine is designed around accessibility, time, relationships, and proactive care. Medication should be treated as a clinical tool—not a replacement for healthier behavior. The best health plan is personalized, measurable, medically guided, and sustainable. Protecting your health helps you continue contributing to your family, organization, and community. Memorable Quotes "Functional independence is what we want." — Dr. Sandeep Palakodeti "You can only manage what you measure." — Dr. Sandeep Palakodeti "The new flex is being healthy." — Dr. Sandeep Palakodeti "Being independent allows me to have one boss and one boss only, and that's the patient." — Dr. Sandeep Palakodeti "Living our life to its fullest potential is a responsibility." — John DiJulius "We all have seeds of potential." — John DiJulius Episode Chapters 00:00 Introducing Dr. Sandeep "Dr. Deep" Palakodeti 02:23 How Velocity Health delivers digital-first precision medicine 07:08 Why personal health belongs in a leadership conversation 12:44 How genetics and lifestyle influence long-term health 17:47 Lifespan versus healthspan and functional independence 20:08 Traditional healthcare versus concierge medicine 26:37 GLP-1 medications, hormones, peptides, and medical guidance 30:07 Using diagnostics to build a personalized health plan 38:23 Why health may be the new status symbol 40:59 Why medication cannot replace healthy habits 44:56 Longevity medicine for women and couples 46:19 Three ways to start improving your healthspan 48:30 How to learn more about Velocity Health Learn more about Velocity Health at VelocityHealthClinic.com. I recorded this one for those nights when your mind just won't stop circling... you know the feeling. It's built around the sound and imagery of a fire crackling in a quiet cabin, the kind of place where the only light comes from the flames and the only sound is the occasional settle of the logs. I wanted it to feel less like a "sleep exercise" and more like you're actually there, tucked into a warm bed while something ancient and steady just keeps burning nearby. The script moves slowly on purpose... starting with the warmth of the fire itself, then gently guiding your attention through your body, letting each part soften and settle the way you would if you were genuinely winding down after a long day. There's no rush to it. It's meant to be listened to with your eyes closed, ideally already in bed, and it's completely fine if you never hear the end.If this kind of thing helps you, I'd love to know what you'd like to see next... more fireside scenes, different settings, different sounds. And if you're new here, welcome. I make these because I know what it's like to lie awake for no good reason, and I wanted to make something that actually helps.

Hey friends, Chase here. Every summer, I revisit conversations from the archive that have stood the test of time. Not because I'm nostalgic, but because the best ideas don't expire. They deepen. This is the sixth and final installment of Summer School 2026—episodes I personally returned to most this year when I was stuck, blocked, or facing a very particular need. This one with Elizabeth Gilbert is the closer for a reason. I kept finding myself spending so much time navigating my internal landscape that it felt like it was taking me away from everything I wanted to do out in the world. And then I remembered something Liz said that rearranged the frame: she considers mental health her full-time job. Writing—being a professional creator—is a hobby she does on the side. That line alone is worth revisiting every summer. Liz Gilbert is the bestselling author of Eat, Pray, Love (more than 12 million copies), a Time 100 most influential person, novelist of City of Girls, and the rare creative who can talk about fear, mercy, grief, and truth-telling without flinching—and without performing enlightenment. She's a force of nature. Spend a few minutes with her and you'll know why. In this conversation, she makes the case that the way out of pain is through honesty. That grace can take you places hustling can't. That mercy is the foundation of any healthy creative life. And that you make the world safe for yourself by telling the truth in it. Grace can take you places where hustling can't. Summer School: Elizabeth Gilbert on Truth-Telling, Mercy, and the Art of Being Yourself Liz opens with City of Girls—a novel about promiscuous girls in 1940s New York theater who behave recklessly with their sexuality and aren't ruined by it. A palate cleanser, she jokes, from Anna Karenina: one orgasm and then you're under the train. Underneath the glamour is a deeper subject: how do you become yourself? How do you just be—not a role, not a brand, not a performance of "good girl"? Her aspiration is almost revolutionary: to be the most relaxed person in every room she's in. To show what it might look like for a woman—for anyone—to be at ease in a world of nearly universal anxiety. How do you get there? Not by hustling harder. Through foundational, almost unbelievable honesty—truth to yourself and truth to others. Spending most of the day saying no. Ending the hustle so grace has room to work. Her great love and teacher, Rayya (Ria in the transcript), lived by a line Liz now lives by too: the truth has legs. It's the only thing left standing in the room at the end of the day. Everything else blows up into drama. Since you're going to end up at the truth anyway—why not start there? If you've ever felt that taking care of your inner world is somehow stealing time from your "real work," this episode will reframe that entirely. The care is the real work. What You'll Hear in This Episode Why City of Girls is about becoming yourself—and why "just being" is rarer than we admit Liz's aspiration to be the most relaxed person in the room—and why honesty makes that possible "The truth has legs"—and how Rayya schooled her in radical truth-telling How withheld truth eventually breaks the body and mind—and why die-or-tell-the-truth becomes the only choice Why people-pleasing is really self-protection, not generosity Creativity and fear: being just 1% more curious than you are afraid A working definition of a creative life: decisions based more on curiosity than fear Mercy as the foundation—for self, for others, for the inevitable disappointment of making imperfect work Mental health as the full-time job; writing as the side practice The daily dialogue with Love that has saved her life for 20 years—and why writing slows the mind What to do when you're creatively stuck: walk away and do something with your hands Truth Has Legs Liz is clear: try to have a completely honest relationship with at least one person in your life—and it's best if that person is yourself. When she was younger, she thought she couldn't tell the truth because the world wasn't safe for it. Later she learned the reverse: you make the world safe for yourself by telling the truth in it. Around 30, the first major truth she couldn't say—ending her marriage—nearly destroyed her. Sleep gone. Appetite gone. Twenty pounds lost. Mental health broken. Physical health broken. Die or tell the truth. She finally told it. Instead of killing her, it brought her to life. And if she'd said it two years earlier, it would have been a greater gift to him as well. People-pleasing, in her frame, isn't kindness. It's manipulation for perceived safety. The other person deserves to know who they're actually talking to. And truth-telling isn't a one-and-done graduation. Life keeps offering another chance to be brave. The only way out is through honesty. Do it again. Trust builds. It gets easier—not because the stakes drop, but because you finally believe the method. Rayya's cancer journey deepened this. When Liz couldn't cope by clinging to her partner as salvation, she had to become the steady one. Wisdom she doesn't share, she says, starts to hurt—like unused talent turns into pain. So she shares. Not out of marketing duty to readers. Out of self-preservation and love. Mercy, Curiosity, and Mental Health as the Job Asked for compressed creative advice, Liz answers in one word: mercy. Mercy for yourself. Mercy for others. Mercy for the inevitable disappointment when what you make isn't the tourmaline butterfly you dreamed—when day one excitement becomes day two self-hatred. The only people who get to day three are the people who have mercy. Ann Patchett's image: smash the gemstone butterfly on day one, then make the weird little thing out of chewing gum and baseball cards and twigs—and say, good job, self. No one's ever made one like that before. That's compassion: ending the argument against reality. This is what we've got. Flap flap. A piece falls off. Keep going. On fear, Liz's saving grace is curiosity—just 1% more curious than afraid. That's enough. Her definition of a creative life isn't watercolor class. It's any life where your decisions are routinely based more strongly on curiosity than fear. Then the life itself becomes the work of art. And here's the Summer School lightning bolt: an enormous percentage of Liz's days is spent managing her mental health—the "dysfunctional family" inside her mind. Writing is what she does on the side. She was managing her mental health on the plane that morning. There are very few days off from saving her own life. Her primary practice for twenty years: a daily dialogue with Love (capital L)—writing the words she always wanted someone to say. I'm right here. I've got you. You can't tire me out. Love doesn't need the room to be different. Love doesn't issue a five-point improvement plan. Love is company in the darkest hour. Writing slows the mind enough to receive that. When creativity is stuck? Don't force the tormented artist fantasy. Walk away. Garden. Fix a bicycle. Power-wash a driveway. Get out of your head and into your hands. Inspiration returns after embodiment—not after more self-punishment. Creators still treat self-care as optional overhead between "real" output. Hustle culture still pretends grace is lazy. This conversation is the antidote. Mental health isn't what you do after you're successful. It's the work that makes everything else possible. Truth isn't a brand strategy. It's how you stop poisoning your own body with secrets. Mercy isn't soft. It's the only way anyone ever reaches day three. That's why this episode earned the final Summer School slot. The year asked a lot of our inner landscapes. Liz's answer is still the one that helps me return to the world without abandoning myself: tell the truth. Tend the mind. Prefer curiosity over fear. Make the imperfect butterfly. Keep company with Love. Class dismissed—until next summer. Keep Going Deeper If this conversation resonates: City of Girls Big Magic Eat, Pray, Love Liz online: elizabethgilbert.com Follow Liz: Instagram | X/Twitter | Website Questions to Reflect On Where am I hustling for a result that only grace—and honesty—can deliver? What truth do I already know I'm going to end up telling—and what would it cost to start with it? Am I making the world safer for myself through honesty, or waiting for the world to feel safe first? Where has people-pleasing become self-protection dressed up as kindness? In my creative work, am I on day two (self-hatred) or practicing the mercy that gets me to day three? If mental health were my full-time job this week, what would change about how I schedule my days? When I'm stuck, am I forcing the art—or am I willing to power-wash a driveway and return to the present? The Core Idea You don't graduate from truth-telling. You practice it. You don't earn rest by producing enough. You save your own life daily so you have a life worth creating from. Liz's invitation—as the last lesson of this Summer School season—is both soft and severe: tell the truth until the room is safe. Put mercy under every creative attempt. Be just slightly more curious than afraid. Tend the warring neighborhood in your mind like it's the job. Write love to yourself when no one else can hold the need. And when the work won't move—move your body instead. If there's one lesson worth carrying forward from this final Summer School session, it's this: Mental health is the work. Creativity is what you get to do when you've tended it—and the only way out of the hard parts is through honesty.

The Hound of the Baskervilles, Chapter 13: Fixing the Nets, by Arthur Conan Doyle — A Calming Bedtime Story for Sleep & Insomnia | Books at Bedtime A calming bedtime story to help you fall asleep — Chapter 13 of The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, read slowly and softly for anyone lying awake with a busy mind. Tonight the net begins to close. Sherlock Holmes returns to Baskerville Hall, and over a late supper he notices something in an old family portrait on the wall — a face beneath a plumed hat and curling love-locks that he has seen somewhere far more recently. From that single quiet observation, the whole tangled case begins to draw together. Holmes and Watson leave for Coombe Tracey, call upon Mrs Laura Lyons, and lay the last of the traps. Lestrade arrives on the evening express. And Sir Henry is asked to do the one thing he has been warned against all along — to walk home alone across the moor. This is a slow, unhurried reading. There is no need to follow the plot, and no need to reach the end. Let the rhythm of the Victorian prose and the hush of Dartmoor at night do the work while your body settles. If you drift off in the first few minutes, that is exactly what this is for.
