In this episode, Chris Cochrane guest-hosts for his brother Ray and devotes the whole show to one event: Disney’s D23 2026 fan convention in Anaheim. Friday night delivered Marvel’s new X-Men cast, Adam Driver as Mister Sinister, a fresh Avengers: Doomsday trailer, and a release date for Frozen 3. Saturday turned to the parks, with Villains Land, an Indiana Jones dark ride, the long-awaited Expedition Everest yeti repair, and a Monsters Inc land opening in 2027. – Want to start a podcast? Instead of six or eight unrelated stories, the entire episode covers Disney’s D23 convention, which he compares to Apple’s WWDC. For newcomers, he notes that D23 is Disney’s official fan club, named for the company’s founding year of 1923. This year’s event ran two nights at the Honda Center: Friday for movies and television, Saturday for the theme parks. Marvel Finally Casts the X-Men Friday’s headline was the X-Men. The Associated Press put the crowd near 12,000, and Marvel Studios used that stage to name its rebooted team. Christopher Abbott plays Professor Charles Xavier, Inde Navarrette plays Rogue, and Maya Boyd plays Storm. Adam Driver rounds out the group as the villain Mister Sinister. Meanwhile, Samara Weaving, Kit Connor, and Sadie Sink were already known as Emma Frost, Cyclops, and Jean Grey. Jake Schreier directs, and the film arrives May 5, 2028. Chris calls the lineup spot-on casting. He singles out Weaving as a perfect match for the comics, and he points out that Sink already appeared as Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Navarrette is the least established name, coming off a breakout role in an indie horror film. Boyd, meanwhile, was the name he knew least, with what he believes is a Broadway background. Above all, Chris hopes Marvel does the team justice, and he recommends the animated revival X-Men ’97 on Disney+ as the best place to start. Frozen 3 Gets a Date and a Chaotic Reveal Frozen 3 lands November 24, 2027. That is the Wednesday of Thanksgiving week, the same slot the first two films used. The story centers on Anna and Kristoff’s wedding, which a new villain, an evil Ice Queen, disrupts. Jennifer Lee returns to direct with Trent Correy, and the full voice cast is back. However, the reveal itself fell apart. Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel performed a darker arrangement of “Frozen Heart.” Meanwhile, the audio failed, the video failed, and a set of doors never opened. Menzel asked the crowd whether they should try it again, and Bell simply narrated everything that was supposed to happen. Afterward, Josh Gad sang “Oooh, Samantha,” a new love song for Olaf. Chris is here for it, since Olaf is one of the franchise’s best comic characters. Pixar, Disney Animation, and the Rest of Friday Night Pixar chief Pete Docter laid out a packed slate. Incredibles 3 hits summer 2028 and follows Violet and Dash sneaking out at night to fight crime. Chris hopes that finally shows a grown-up Jack-Jack. Coco 2 follows in November 2029 with Benjamin Bratt returning as Ernesto de la Cruz. That has fans puzzling over how a villain already in the Land of the Dead comes back. Additionally, Pixar showed an original called Ghost Market and a Venice-set cat film called Gatto. On the Disney Animation side, Zootopia 3 is confirmed. The live-action Tangled arrives March 31, 2028 with Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel. Chris considers that casting perfect after her turn in Agatha All Along. A live-action Lilo & Stitch sequel, a new Simpsons movie, a Bluey movie, and a Kingdom Hearts anime series round out the list. For Star Wars fans, Ahsoka returns January 20, 2027. Chris also offers a hot take: he prefers Rogue One to the entire sequel trilogy. Consequently, he welcomes original stories like Ryan Gosling’s upcoming Starfighter. Adam Driver Is Mister Sinister Driver appeared by video rather than in person. He told the crowd that he and Kevin Feige had talked for years about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Then he announced he would play Magneto. After a long pause, he corrected himself to Nathaniel Milbury, which is Mister Sinister’s human alias. The gag landed because fans had floated Driver for Magneto for years. For anyone new to the comics, Chris explains that Mister Sinister is a geneticist obsessed with mutant DNA, a manipulator rather than a brawler. The cast met backstage only minutes earlier, so Chris is curious how their chemistry develops. Notably, Christopher Abbott previously worked with Driver on HBO’s Girls. The script comes from Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear co-showrunner Joanna Calo, two prestige-television names that have Chris excited. Why the X-Men Took Thirty Years to Reach the MCU A business story underlies the casting. In the 1990s, a financially struggling Marvel sold film rights to raise cash. Fox ended up with the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, and Sony took Spider-Man. As a result, Marvel Studios built its connected universe from 2008 onward without some of its most famous characters. The Hugh Jackman era of X-Men films belonged to Fox, with a separate continuity and no crossovers. That changed in 2019, when Disney closed its $71 billion purchase of 21st Century Fox’s film and television studio. Most coverage framed the deal as a streaming play, but it also brought the X-Men home. Chris sums it up neatly: Disney signed the paperwork in 2019, cast the film in 2026, and audiences see it in 2028. Ryan Gosling’s Starfighter, Ghost Rider, and VisionQuest Lucasfilm dated Star Wars: Starfighter for May 28, 2027. Gosling plays Kade Auberon, a pilot from the wrong side of the galaxy tied to the fastest starfighter ever built. Before he walked out, Disney played clips of him as a kid on The Mickey Mouse Club. Gosling said the company changed his life then and is changing it again now. He is also playing Ghost Rider in the Marvel universe. That thrills Chris, since Nicolas Cage last carried the character on the big screen. Meanwhile, the Disney+ series VisionQuest arrives October 14. Paul Bettany returns as Vision and James Spader as Ultron, and the trailer drops the two androids into oddly mundane human situations. Bettany joked that Vision has “rather inconveniently died several times.” Chris agrees the character has been through the wringer since WandaVision. The Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Avengers: Doomsday opens December 18, with Joe and Anthony Russo directing. Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Hayley Atwell introduced the new footage. It offers the clearest look yet at Downey as Doctor Doom, who fights off Thor and takes his hammer. Evans appears as Captain America holding a baby, and Ian McKellen shows up as a haggard, long-haired Magneto. One quieter shot has Doom staring at a portrait of a lost wife and child. That frames him as a grieving avenger rather than a world-ender. He also commands an army of comic-accurate Sentinels. The cast pulls from the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the legacy Fox X-Men, including Patrick Stewart. Hugh Jackman also appeared on screen to say he is willing to return as Wolverine, though that was not a confirmation. Chris, a self-described Marvel nerd, closes with a theory. He suspects the MCU’s Tony Stark was actually Victor von Doom, adopted by the Starks, which would explain the Downey casting. He also predicts the Fox-era X-Men die off in this film and that Thor may be the major casualty. If it happens, he wants credit for calling it. Disney Parks Around the World Saturday’s Disney Experiences showcase covered parks, resorts, and cruise ships, with Neil Patrick Harris hosting. Hong Kong Disneyland gets an Avengers pavilion that reshapes its Stark Expo skyline. Shanghai Disneyland is building the first land devoted entirely to Spider-Man, complete with a new coaster. Since Spider-Man is his favorite hero, Chris hopes to visit once it opens. Closer to home, Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure is doubling in size with two rides opening in 2028. Avengers: Infinity Defense brings back Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Chris Hemsworth, and Downey, while Stark Flight Lab adds Brie Larson. A Coco boat ride into the Land of the Dead is also coming, with no height requirement. Chris admits he prefers California Adventure to Disneyland because the rides are better. Overseas, Disneyland Paris will retire its Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain overlay at the end of 2027 and restore the original Jules Verne theme. Paris also gets the first ride ever based on The Lion King. Tokyo Disneyland adds Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue, the first Wreck-It Ralph ride, plus a Space Mountain launch sequence designed with YouTuber Mark Rober. Finally, Disney Cruise Line announced three more ships, including the Disney Believe in 2027 and an entirely new class in 2029. Back in Anaheim, Tomorrowland is getting reimagined, which Chris welcomes because the land badly needs an update. The Magic Happens parade and the Remember Dreams Come True fireworks are both returning. For the tech crowd, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run now has a Fortnite crossover, where in-game missions unlock content on the real ride. Every New Walt Disney World Ride and Land Chris ranks the Florida parks Hollywood Studios first, then Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Magic Kingdom. Magic Kingdom leads the announcements with Villains Land, now the official name. It features a Maleficent coaster through an enchanted briar and a boat ride through the Evil Queen’s catacombs. Reporting puts its scale near Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and Glenn Close appeared in character as Cruella to announce it. Piston Peak, the Cars area replacing Tom Sawyer Island, adds two more rides, though their exact names remain unsettled. Additionally, the Carousel of Progress gets new scenes and a recast. Jamie Lee Curtis and Bryan Cranston will voice Mom and Dad starting late spring 2027. Chris, invoking Heisenberg, calls Cranston the GOAT. At Animal Kingdom, the Indiana Jones ride now has a name: Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent. It tells an original 1950 story inside a Maya temple, and Harrison Ford personally served as the physical model for the animatronic. Nearby, the Tropical Americas land brings Antonio’s Fiesta de Encanto, with more than fifty animal animatronics and no height requirement. Then comes the fix park regulars have wanted for years. The Expedition Everest yeti broke soon after the ride opened. Rather than fix it, Disney lit it with a strobe for over a decade, earning the nickname disco yeti. Now it is being repaired and returned to full motion. Chris rates Everest among his top five rides anywhere, and he suggests riding it before the fix so you can compare. Over at Epcot, Spaceship Earth gets its first major story rewrite in nearly twenty years, shifting from communication history to human connection. Dreamfinder also returns to Journey Into Imagination, and Disney Experiences chairman Thomas Mazloum introduced that news with two words: “we heard you.” Mazloum added that Disney has more projects underway than at any point in its history. After this rundown, Chris believes him. Monsters Inc Land Opens in 2027 Monstropolis begins opening at Hollywood Studios in early 2027, but in stages. The headline door coaster will not be ready on day one. It is the first suspended coaster in any Disney park. It also uses Disney’s first vertical lift, hauling riders about forty feet straight up before launching them into the door vault. Instead, the land opens with the Glob Theater’s “Welcome to Monstropolis” show and Harryhausen’s, a working sushi restaurant lifted from the first film. The stage show features an original song by Randy Newman, his first ever written for a theme park attraction. Chris also notes that the restaurant name honors stop-motion legend Ray Harryhausen. Wrapping up, Chris names the X-Men casting and the Doomsday trailer as his favorite moments of the weekend. He hopes to cover more movie news on future shows, and he plugs Dune: Part Three, which also opens December 18. Chris signs off with the usual mentions: GNC Insider at geeknewscentral.com/insider, email at geeknews@gmail.com, the newsletter, and modern podcast apps at podcastapps.com. He also thanks GoDaddy for over twenty years of support. The post Huge Announcements From D23!! #1873 appeared first on Geek News Central.

Someday, someone else will have to put on the armor… right? Robert Downey Jr. didn't just play Tony Stark—he helped define what Iron Man looks, sounds, and feels like for an entire generation. So if Marvel eventually recasts the role, how does another actor make Tony Stark his own without simply doing an RDJ impression? In this episode of Marvel Maniac, Eric explores whether audiences are ready for a new Iron Man, what parts of Tony truly belong to the character versus the actor who made him iconic, and why Hugh Jackman's return as Wolverine may offer a blueprint for Tony Stark's future. And then there's another possibility: what if Marvel doesn't need a new Iron Man just yet? Could Robert Downey Jr. return as a different Tony Stark with a different history—and could that launch an entirely new trilogy beginning with Iron Man: Reforged? It's speculation. It's theory. We go back to the Crawlspace archives for this 2008 interview with writer David Michelinie. He had one of the longest run on Amazing Spider-Man. He co-created Venom and Carnage. He also worked with artist Todd McFarlane, Erik Larsen and Mark Bagley in the 1980s and 1990s. Before tackling Spider-Man he had an incredible run on Iron Man. He gave Tony Stark a drinking problem and a best friend in Jim Rhodes.  Are you a Crawlspace patreon member? Episode 546 - We Watched the Avengers Doomsday Trailer: Is Marvel Back on Track?

Mind Gap

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 24, 2026 71:23

The Avengers Doomsday trailer dropped this week and Doug has already watched it four times. The full reaction is here: what landed, what it means for the MCU, why the Russos coming back gives genuine reason for optimism, and why Thor not cracking a single joke in the entire trailer is one of the most promising signs this movie is going somewhere real. The biggest moments get the full breakdown. Captain America's return and the Mjolnir handoff. RDJ as Doctor Doom and the most logical in-universe explanation for why he looks exactly like Tony Stark. The Loki TVA card and whether the average viewer has any idea what that means. Shang-Chi showing up despite not appearing in a single piece of Marvel content since 2021. The Fantastic Four's involvement. Gambit getting a moment that made a 10-year-old lose her mind. And the theory that this film is essentially Marvel's version of Secret Wars, a way of pruning timelines, retiring legacy characters, and rebooting the X-Men in a way that actually makes sense. Speaking of the X-Men, Doug and Natalie watched all five original Fox X-Men films over the weekend specifically to prepare for Doomsday. The full post-mortem covers everything the franchise got wrong: Wolverine was never supposed to be the main character, Cyclops got done catastrophically dirty across every single film, Rogue never threw one punch in three movies, the X-Men never once fought as a team despite that being their entire thing, and Hugh Jackman looked completely fine in the year 2000 and we as a society did something terrible to that man over the next 24 years. Before all that: a Reddit question about socially acceptable life choices that are actually kind of insane when you sit with them. Spending money you don't have to impress people you don't like. Working five days a week just to get two days of freedom. Choosing your entire career path when you are 17 years old. Sports fanaticism and the double standard that exists between jersey-wearing adults and anyone who shows up to a convention. Gambling, specifically the rise of sports betting apps and why that cottage industry is genuinely sinister. Posting everything on social media compulsively. And the hokey pokey. The Urban Dictionary game returns. This round covers Gert, Yop, Opstopper, Cap-tain, Gup, and Poo Shuttling. Justin's definition of Poo Shuttling involves Colorado, underground pipe hacking, and a thriving East Coast black market. It is not correct. It is significantly better than correct. This week's recommendations: Justin: Good Luck Have Fun Don't Die (Hulu/Disney+). Sam Rockwell is extraordinary. Zazzy Beetz, Michael Pena, Juno Temple, Haley Lou Richardson. Weird, funny, and not far off from where we are headed. The third act gets away from itself slightly but the film is absolutely worth your time. Doug: The Long Walk (HBO). Stephen King adaptation. Dystopian future. 50 boys from 50 states walk until one is left alive. Dark as hell. Completely enthralling. Not a pick-me-upper. Go watch it. Hey there, No-Prize Winners and Merry Marvel Marchers! This week's entry in “Tops and Bottoms” [pause for Mike to stop giggling for some reason] is the biggest earner of 2018 and it's the penultimate Avengers movie of Marvel's Phase 3, Ephesians 7, Jackson 5, or whatever it was and it made a barge-load of ducats when it came out, and why wouldn't it? I mean, you've got Doc Bruce Banner it, and while as the Hulk he may be un-glamor-rays, still he's apparently loveable! You've got Captain America throwing his mighty shield! And what happens to those who chose to oppose his shield? Why, they must surely yield! And here's Tony Stark who may make you feel he's a cool exec with a heart of steel, as Iron Man, with jets ablaze, he fights and smites with repulsor rays! He does! I have it on the best authority! Plus, you'll behold in breathless wonder the God of Thunder, Mighty Thor (that's a deeper). There's even some guy in this movie who does whatever a spider can! And so many other superheroes who were never lucky enough to get their own 60's theme songs, poor devils. Black Panther needs a theme song, dammit! So how does this box office juggernaut (wait, he's in another franchise, right? Maybe two?) hold up after the better part of a decade? Give a listen to Mulching Max Levine and Macerating Mike Luce to find out! Expeliarmus! I mean, Excelsior! Poll question: what's your favorite superhero movie? He doesn't want anyone's autograph because he walks away from every shoot with a video of that person instead, which he reckons is worth more. No idols either, just running his own race, and the novelty of rubbing shoulders with Chris Hemsworth and Max Verstappen wears off quicker than you'd think. His biggest fuck-up is a good one. Eighteen hour shoot on the back of fourteen straight days, back at the accommodation copying two terabytes off twelve cards, so cooked he hit Control X instead of Control C and wiped half a card of factory footage they only had one day of access to. Call it thirty to a hundred grand, gone in a silent keystroke. Plus the Tag Heuer after-party at the Melbourne Grand Prix in a $30 million house that looks completely normal from the street until the entire front yard lifts up on hydraulics and you drive down a spiral ramp into a Tony Stark supercar lair with Peking Duk playing. And the reason the Prince of Johor has a collection of white albino alligators, which is that you can't legally export alligators from the States, but apparently an albino one doesn't count as an alligator. Adam digs into why Michael Keaton's Vulture is one of Marvel's best and most sympathetic villains, why that homecoming car ride is one of the great scenes in the Infinity Saga, and the problem underneath it all: Peter Parker never gets to be the hero of his own movie because Tony Stark's shadow swallows the whole franchise. Plus the argument the MCU keeps refusing to make about Stark's legacy, from the Vulture to Mysterio to Damage Control.

However, Peter's plan to leave super heroics behind for a few weeks are quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury uncover the mystery of several elemental creature attacks, creating havoc across the continent. They are rescued by a super-powered fella named Quentin Beck, who destroys the creature. Nick Fury is impressed.  Back in New York,  the school year at Peter's school has restarted after those erased by Thanos returned five years later. So things are a bit wacky there. Still grieving the death of his mentor, Tony Stark, Peter Parker joins his classmates on a two-week trip across Europe, hoping to tell MJ how he feels about her. Happy tells Peter that  Nick Fury is trying to reach him, but Peter ignores the call. He needs a vacay.  The trip's first stop in Venice, Italy, and it doesn't go great. A water monster begins to attack the city. Peter secretly helps protect his classmates while our new friend Howard Beck, aka Mysterio, arrives and defeats the monster.  Afterward, Fury shows up to meet Peter and gives him something that Tony wanted to give him - advanced E.D.I.T.H. glasses. Let's jsut say they're very powerful.   Peter declines Fury's request to join the mission and returns to his classmates, but Fury quietly reroutes the school trip to Prague where, uh oh, the Fire monster attacks. Peter fights alongside Mysterio. Afterwords, Peter and Beck are hanging out and Peter gives Beck E.D.I.T.H. glasses, convinced the world needs a hero like Mysterio more then him. Once Peter leaves, Beck reveals the truth. The monsters were never real but elaborate holographic illusions created with advanced projection technology by a team of hurt former Stark Industries employees. Fired years earlier for his unstable behavior, Beck orchestrated the attacks to portray himself as the world's newest superhero. With control of E.D.I.T.H. and its drone arsenal, he plans to create even larger illusions and cement his status as an Avenger-level protector. After MJ reveals that she knows Peter is Spider-Man, she shows him a damaged projector she recovered from the Prague battle, leading them to realize that Beck is a bad guy. Peter rushes to Berlin to warn Fury, but Beck traps him in a series of illusions.  Peter survives the attack and wakes up in the Netherlands, where he contacts Happy Hogan. Happy flies him to London, where Beck is staging his big illusion. Beck also plans to eliminate Peter's classmates, fearing they could expose his fraud. Peter battles through Beck and is able to use his his Spider-Sense to defeat him. He get the E.D.I.T.H. Back and  defeats Beck.  , Peter and MJ meet back up and kissss! They get to New York and starts dating which means flying through the streets together. Would you like access to our advanced agency training for FREE? https://www.agencymastery360.com/training Have you gotten mediocre output from AI and blamed the tool? Are you running a marketing team that is still activity-based when the clients who trust you need you to own outcomes? Today's featured guest came up through the Navy, where he learned that calm in chaos comes from frameworks, not confidence. In this episode, Kevin walks through SMAC, the military-derived operating framework he uses with clients, employees, and his own agency. He also gets into the Iron Man model for AI usage, how he cut a two-day research process to eight minutes, and what his Red Lens tool does before any campaign goes out the door. Kevin McGrew is the founder and CEO of Strategos, a demand generation agency based in Southern California. He served in the Navy after high school, where he discovered that elite performance under pressure is a function of drilled frameworks, not natural ability. He went on to found and exit three businesses before launching Strategos, which started as a social media agency at the dawn of Facebook business pages and has since evolved into a full demand generation model. Kevin trains his team and his clients on the SMAC framework and has rebuilt his entire production model around what he calls human-led, AI-amplified operations. In this episode, we'll discuss: Kevin's SMAC Framework for successful campaigns The Iron Man model for human-AI relationships How to get a resistant team to use AI Subscribe Apple | Spotify | iHeart Radio Sponsors and Resources This episode is brought to you by Wix Studio: If you're leveling up your team and your client experience, your site builder should keep up too. That's why successful agencies use Wix Studio — built to adapt the way your agency does: AI-powered site mapping, responsive design, flexible workflows, and scalable CMS tools so you spend less on plugins and more on growth. Ready to design faster and smarter? Go to wix.com/studio to get started. Why Spray and Pray Is Still the Default and What SMAC Replaces It With In his time in the Navy, Kevin was impressed by how cool, calm, and collected the SEALs were when dealing with stressful situations. The reason for this was basically training and frameworks. This is something he applies to every aspect of his life, and it's the tool he uses to train his team on how to build winning campaigns with the SMAC framework, which comes directly from military operation: Shoot: knowing your target with enough specificity that you are not wasting ammo. In marketing terms, that is ICP clarity before any campaign launches, understanding who you are looking for before you spend a dollar trying to reach them. Move: staying agile and not sitting still long enough for the competitive environment to get a clear bead on you. Adapt: this is the data discipline: running campaigns on real signals rather than assumptions, the way combat aircraft are identified friend or foe before anyone pulls a trigger. Communicate: this refers to preparation, having the right message built before you need it rather than scrambling to write copy mid-campaign. The reason most agencies default to activity-based marketing instead of this kind of disciplined execution is the same reason Kevin's early Navy self had no framework for anything: nobody built it for them. Spray and pray is what happens when the target package is unclear and the pressure to produce something is higher than the standard for producing the right thing. SMAC does not require a military background. It requires deciding, before the work starts, that clarity is worth more than speed. The Iron Man Model and What the Suit Cannot Do Without the Operator Kevin uses Iron Man to frame the human-AI relationship. Basically, the suit by itself is junk. Tony Stark is the variable that matters. AI handles research and synthesis, first draft production, and reporting narratives, the parts of the work where speed and information aggregation are the constraints. The human operator stays accountable to the client, owns the strategic direction, and runs everything through a quality check before it goes out. The practical output of this model is striking. A competitive landscape analysis that used to take two and a half days of dedicated people hours now takes eight minutes. Monthly client reports that required two hours of prep are now twenty minutes. That compression is coming from building the right AI infrastructure, training it on your frameworks and your quality standards, and having the discipline to keep humans in the accountability seat. The agencies getting burned by AI right now are the ones treating the first draft as a finished output. The ones building leverage are the ones who figured out what the suit is actually for. The Red Lens: Why You Need a Skeptic Before Anything Ships AI is optimistic about its own output. It produces something impressive-looking and fast, and the human reviewing it gets pulled into the quality of the presentation rather than the quality of the thinking underneath it. This is why Kevin built an internal tool called Red Lens. Red Lens is an agent trained as a skeptic that reviews every campaign output before it launches. It runs Gary Klein's pre-mortem framework: instead of reviewing what went wrong after the fact, it anticipates what is going to fail before money gets spent. The results of running this tool on their own output have been instructive. The tool flags messaging aimed at the wrong stage of the buyer journey, audiences that do not match the campaign brief, and positioning claims that cannot hold up under scrutiny. It catches things the human team missed because they were too close to the work. Every agency that is shipping AI-assisted content without a systematic skeptic layer is doing the equivalent of proofing your own copy. You see what you intended to write, not what you actually wrote. Red Lens is the outside read that makes the inside work trustworthy. Crawl, Walk, Run: How to Get a Resistant Team Actually Using AI How do you get a team that thinks AI is cheating or that it will replace them to actually adopt it? Kevin approached the solution at the operational level. The answer was not a training session or a mandate. It was engineering small, undeniable wins at the individual level before asking anyone to change how they work at the system level. Kevin calls them micro moments of awesomeness: twelve to fifteen small experiences where a team member feels the tool working for them rather than threatening them. Crawl, walk, run is the philosophy underneath it. You do not learn to sprint before you can stand. You master the foundation layer until it becomes the floor, and then you add the next layer on top of that. The agencies that have struggled most with AI adoption inside their teams are the ones that announced the new direction without engineering the experience of what it feels like to win with it. Giving someone a taste of the efficiency before asking them to commit to the change is not soft management. It is how behavioral adoption actually works. Send us Fan MailA messy question turns into a full culture check: if getting a superpower required hooking up with a superhero, who are we choosing and are we picking for power, money, or pure attraction? We get into Teen Titans nostalgia, big-name comic picks, and the funniest loophole of all: the idea that Tony Stark's real superpower is wealth. It's wild, but it also sets the tone for how we talk about pop culture the way people actually talk about it with friends. Then we hit a debate that gets surprisingly real: would you rather keep Black music or Black food if one had to disappear? We argue comfort and tradition versus the way hip hop, R&B, gospel, and global Black sounds fuel our lives. We also say the quiet part out loud for anyone thinking about cultural impact: remove Black influence and a huge chunk of modern music changes overnight, even for artists outside the culture who borrow the sound. From there we pivot into music talk and entertainment news, including reactions to big releases, how we find new artists through social media, and the hype around Pretty Ricky versus B2K in a Verzuz-style battle. We close out with BET Awards weekend energy, thoughts on Drewski hosting, and our predictions across key categories, plus a quick sports moment where we make it clear who we think deserves the shine. If you like hip hop podcast conversations, R&B talk, Verzuz debates, and BET Awards predictions with jokes and honesty, this one's for you. Subscribe wherever you listen, share this with a friend who argues about culture for sport, and leave a review so more people can find the show.FOLLOW. Jim Hill and Dan Graney dig into a wild week of Marvel speculation, from murky Avengers: Doomsday leak drama to Sony's carefully controlled Spider-Man: Brand New Day rollout. They also spotlight the Muppets' latest Marvel crossover before Dan unveils a Doctor Doom theory that may reframe Robert Downey Jr.'s MCU return entirely. Plus, brisket, burnt ends, Muppet Treasure Island covers, and one very big question: what if Tony Stark was never the rule, but the exception? HIGHLIGHTS • Jim and Dan break down the blurry Avengers: Doomsday footage leak and the debate over whether it was real, AI-enhanced, or both. • Robert Downey Jr. and the Russo Brothers tease Doomsday as a structurally ambitious, emotionally complex follow-up to Infinity War and Endgame. • Spider-Man: Brand New Day ticket sales arrive with a tiny cast video instead of the trailer fans expected. • The new Brand New Day trailer points toward a Spidey-versus-Hulk showdown and a world where almost no one remembers Peter Parker. • The hosts dig into the mystery of who still remembers Peter Parker, from Savage Hulk to a possible Jean Grey connection. • Marvel's The Muppets Take the Marvel Universe celebrates The Muppet Show's 50th anniversary with Kermit, Gonzo, Deadpool, and one very mean Uncle Ben joke. • Dan lays out his big Doctor Doom theory: what if Doom is the multiversal constant and Tony Stark was the one heroic anomaly? • Jim connects the theory back to Doctor Strange's “one” winning timeline and the possibility that the MCU only ever had one good Tony Stark. Career / Process You broke in around 2006, and you're now pushing close to two decades in comics. How has your approach to storytelling changed from those early years to now? You've been at this for nearly 20 years at this point. What's something you understand about comics today that you wish you knew when you started? You're writing across multiple major franchises right now. How do you shift your voice between something like Superman, Iron Man, and G.I. Joe? On top of all this, you wrote a story in Creepshow Vol. 4 #5 titled Artificial Ignorance. Was that a story you had in a drawer, or…how did that come to be? Superman / Superboy-Prime Superboy-Prime has always been a volatile character, but here he feels almost desperate to prove himself. How do you balance his edge with making him someone readers want to follow? With Manchester Black entering the picture, what excites you about putting those two characters in conflict specifically? Any Superman elements/tropes you want to touch? Iron Man You've said Tony Stark is one of your favorite characters. What's something about Tony that you feel hasn't been explored enough in past runs? Madame Masque and A.I.M. feel like they're operating at a higher level here. What makes them the right villains for this phase of the story? Universal Monsters: Blood of the Wolf Man Do you have a favorite Universal Monsters adaptation? Do you have any favorite werewolf stories? This feels like a very grounded, almost psychological take on the Wolf Man. What drew you to that angle? Is the when of this story important to the overall experience? What makes the Wolf Man a character worth revisiting right now? Rapid Fire Question Round (Stolen from Stephen Colbert so that a guest is “known”): Best sandwich? America Is Racing Toward An AI Cliff With No Safety Net, Will AGI Hurt Or Harm? - Alvin Wang Graylin

Our guest this week, Alvin Wang Graylin spent 35 years in senior leadership roles across HTC, IBM, and other major tech companies. He ran HTC's VR division, came out of the famous HIT Lab, now teaches at MIT, holds a fellowship at Stanford, and just published a paper called "Beyond Rivalry" proposing a seven-point plan for deescalating US-China AI tensions and building a global safety net before the economy breaks. His thesis: America is the fastest in the AI race and the least prepared for what it's creating—a cliff where human labor theory of value collapses, capital concentration accelerates, and 40% of the population living month to month faces chaos. The conversation becomes a wide-ranging debate between Alvin, Charlie, and Rony about whether AGI will be benevolent by default (Alvin's position: research shows smarter AI seeks global coherence and becomes less controllable by individual humans, which may actually make it safer) or whether benevolence must be designed in from scratch.AI XR News You Should Know: Elon Musk merges SpaceX, xAI, and X into a single entity—Alvin dismantles the space data center concept with physics (vacuum cooling is a myth, micro-meteorite collisions would destroy hardware daily, and energy is only 10% of data center costs).Amazon invests $50 billion in OpenAI that round-trips back to AWS. Alphabet breaks revenue records at $400 billion but spooks investors by disclosing $90 billion in AI spending. ElevenLabs raises $500 million at $11 billion valuation. Rony's SynthBee hits unicorn status with $100 million raised at a multi-billion dollar valuation.Alvin warns the AI bubble dwarfs the dot-com era (298 companies raised $24 billion total during dot-com; OpenAI alone is raising that in a single private round) and predicts OpenAI may implode before going public.Key Moments Timestamps:[00:04:47] SpaceX/xAI/X merger: Rony calls it Elon's "return to Tony Stark form"[00:06:41] Alvin dismantles space data centers with physics: vacuum cooling myth, micro-meteorites, $7K/kg launch costs[00:10:04] Amazon's $50B investment in OpenAI as a round-trip to AWS; the scam economy[00:11:26] Alvin predicts OpenAI may implode before going public[00:14:23] Alvin on 35 years in AI: the technology is transformational but everyone's making a commodity product[00:17:04] The AI bubble dwarfs dot-com: $24B total vs. single private rounds today[00:19:04] Rony's contrarian: the $110 trillion global economy is what's being bet against[00:21:06] Labor theory of value collapses: what happens when humans exit the production cycle[00:23:00] America is fastest in the AI race and least prepared; 40% live month to month[00:24:00] Alvin's Stanford paper "Beyond Rivalry": a CERN for AI and global data pool[00:28:00] Davos reflections: the rest of the world is more rational than America[00:34:00] Chinese vs. American culture: reverence for teachers, respect for elders[00:42:00] Alvin's "Abundant" framework: valuing human dignity over production after AGI[00:44:22] The great debate: will AGI find benevolence naturally (Alvin) or must it be designed in (Rony)?[00:47:00] Rony on risk: AGI systems are unverifiable, untestable, and we cannot take the chanceListen to the full episode and subscribe to the AI XR Podcast for weekly conversations at the intersection of AI, XR, and the future of humanity. This episode is brought to you by Zappar, creators of Mattercraft—the leading visual development environment for building immersive 3D web experiences for mobile headsets and desktop.   ABOUT AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR The Avengers and their allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe. AIR DATE & NETWORK FOR AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR April 27, 2018 | Theatrical Release CAST & CREW OF AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Directors: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo Writers: Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely, Stan Lee Cast: Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man Chris Hemsworth as Thor Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Hulk Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow Don Cheadle as James Rhodes/War Machine Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa/Black Panther Zoe Saldaña as Gamora Karen Gillan as Nebula Tom Hiddleston as Loki Paul Bettany as Vision Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier BRAN'S MOVIE SYNOPSIS So, they get right to it. Bad boy Thanos gets an infinity stone, the Power Stone. His play is to get all six Infinity Stones and wipe out half of all life in the universe.  His first stop is the ship carrying the surviving people of Asgard. Thanos easily overwhelms the remaining Asgardians, beats up Hulk, and steals the Space Stone from Loki's Tesseract. He then kills Loki. Thanos then destroys the ship and continues his hunt. Edris Elba helps make sure that Hulk returns to earth, where he crashes through the New York Sanctum. Back as Bruce, He warns Doctor Stephen Strange and Wong that Thanos is coming.  Tony Stark joins the conversation. Before he can call Steve Rogers to get the band back together, they attack the city to claim the Time Stone from Strange. Spider-Man is pulled into the chaos, and after they captures Strange aboard his spaceship, Stark and Peter Parker secretly hitch a ride into space to rescue him while Wong remains behind to defend the Sanctum. Meanwhile, the Guardians of the Galaxy answer a distress signal and save Thor floating in space. They agree they need to work together to stop Thanos. But they're too late. Thanos already possesses the Reality Stone and uses its power to manipulate everything around them. He captures Gamora after learning she knows the location of the Soul Stone. Desperate to save her adopted sister Nebula from torture, Gamora tells him where the stone is .  When they get there, the keeper of the Soul Stone, one Red Skull, reveals the price required to obtain it: the sacrifice of someone truly loved. In one of the film's most tragic moments, Thanos throws Gamora to her death, earning the Soul Stone. Vision and Wanda are ambushed in Scotland by Proxima Midnight and Corvus Glaive, who attempt to rip the Mind Stone from Vision's forehead. Captain America, Black Widow, and Falcon arrive just in time to save them, bringing the wounded Vision back to the Avengers Compound. Vision urges Wanda to destroy the Mind Stone and kill him if necessary to stop Thanos, but she cannot bring herself to do it. Instead, the team heads to Wakanda, believing Shuri may be able to safely remove the stone without sacrificing Vision's life. Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange end up on Titan and come face to face with Star-Lord, Drax, and Mantis and they realize they're in the same team.  Using the Time Stone, Strange studies millions of possible futures and discovers only one path where they succeed. Together they execute an elaborate plan to restrain Thanos and remove the Infinity Gauntlet. For a moment, it almost works—until Nebula reveals that Gamora is dead. Overcome with grief and rage, Star-Lord attacks Thanos, ruining the team's hold on him. Thanos breaks free, defeats everyone, and nearly kills Iron Man. To save Tony's life, Doctor Strange willingly surrenders the Time Stone, despite knowing how dangerous it is. In Wakanda, the Avengers prepare for an all-out invasion from Thanos's army. Bruce Banner, unable to transform into Hulk, enters battle wearing the Hulkbuster armor. The tide finally turns when Thor arrives in spectacular fashion alongside Rocket and Groot, tearing through Thanos's army with his fresh new hammer/ax combo, Stormbreaker. Despite their efforts, Thanos himself eventually reaches Vision. Wanda heartbreakingly destroys the Mind Stone—and Vision with it—just before Thanos can claim it. But using the Time Stone, Thanos reverses time, restores Vision briefly to life, and violently tears the stone from his forehead, killing him again. With all six Infinity Stones finally united, the Infinity Gauntlet is complete. Thor attacks and buries Stormbreaker deep into Thanos's chest, but Thanos coldly tells him he “should have gone for the head.” He snaps his fingers and vanishes. Across the universe, half of all life immediately turns to dust. Bucky Barnes, Black Panther, Groot, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Star-Lord, Drax, and Mantis all fade away. On Earth, Nick Fury manages to send a desperate signal from a mysterious pager moments before he too disappears. The survivors are left shattered and defeated. Tony Stark and Nebula are stranded on Titan. The remaining Avengers stand in stunned silence in Wakanda. And somewhere far away, Thanos sits alone on a quiet planet, watching the sunrise over a universe he believes he has finally “saved.” Watch the show on Youtube - www.deckthehallmark.com/youtubeInterested in advertising on the show?
