Dragon's Dogma 2 Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2 A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead God of War: Sons of Sparta Nioh 3 ??? B. Shadow of the Colossus oder zuletzt Demon’s Souls. Wouldn't it be nice to know the future? To have solid advice on what is about to happen in your life, so that you know exactly what to do when the time comes? For the Ancient Greeks, this wasn't a daydream: it was a real possibility, thanks to Oracles. The most important soothsayer was the Oracle of Delphi. Located high on the remote slopes of Mount Parnassus, Assassin's Creed Odyssey recreates the sanctuary in beautiful detail and allows players to meet the Oracle herself. She is as famous as she is mysterious. Who was the Oracle? Why was Delphi such a special place? And what sorts of questions did Ancient Greeks seek answers to?Matt Lewis is joined by Dr. Garrett Ryan, the historian behind the wonderful Told in Stone. His excellent book, Naked Statues, Fat Gladiators, and War Elephants answers 36 frequently asked questions about the Greeks and Romans that are both fascinating and fun to read.Echoes of History is a Ubisoft podcast, brought to you by History Hit. Every problem cannot be solved with a podcast. Welcome back to the podcast and, of course, to our second episode of Fanbruary this year! Today, we're talking about Far Cry 5, which is, obviously, an installment in the Far Cry franchise and, obviously, not the fifth one because of all the weird spinoffs. Still the thing that most stands out, or at least the thing that was advertised the most, that separates this from its predecessors is the fact that it is set in the United States. Ultimately, this game doesn't do much in terms of commentary, which is unfortunate given the opportunity they had here, but it is still a novel setting for a Far Cry game. By far the most impressive element comes from the open world and its lush forests and rural towns. It looks very good. It's an open world game with a bunch of systems attempting to create that emergent gameplay the genre is known for, and importantly, it wastes very little of your time and nearly everything you do contributes toward progressing the game. Still, it is a part of a series that gets that stuff right more often than not, and it doesn't compare favorably in most areas to previous installments. This is particularly true in the writing, but I won't spoil those things here in the description. It's a good game by and large, but is let down in some key ways that make it more of a mixed bag than it could it have been. We're going to be talking about “confidence” in games and the overstimulation of players, the progression systems across the open world, and we argue for the use of parachutes less than 10 feet off the ground. Thank you for joining us again this week! As someone who bounced off this game when it released I'm actually really glad to have gone back to finish it because there is a lot of nuance to what this game does right and wrong in my eyes. On the other hand, I can't advocate for anyone to play it or any other Ubisoft games for that matter thanks to their awful DRM, so just take our word for how the experience is, I guess. How do you feel this game stacks up against other titles in the franchise, if you've played them before? And if you haven't, how do you feel about the fact that the unusable Ubiconnect software ruins the experience of all people who try to interact with the software? Let us know over on our Discord or in the comments below! Next time, for our third Fanbruary episode, we're going to be talking about Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil, so we hope you'll join us then!

Back to our regularly scheduled day, Sean and Marc discuss what's been happening in gaming, which includes reports that the RAM shortage may, in fact, lead to Sony delaying the PlayStation 6 all the way to 2029, which may coincide with some major games being ready by then, too. Would this be beneficial for the industry and gamers? Or would that be too far out? Marc has been spending some time with Nioh 3, and he has thoughts on the game. Plus, Mewgenics is performing very well in major metrics. YapYap is another co-op title that does well on Steam. SEGA plans for four mainstay IP's per fiscal year. Ubisoft does well despite the bad news it's been involved in recently. Capcom surprise launches Dino Crisis 1 & 2 on Steam and more! The Viking leaders are semi-legendary, cloaked in the mythology of the Norse and the scaremongering of the Anglo-Saxons. Was the army really led by the three sons of the infamous Ragnar Lothbrook, as depicted in Assassin's Creed Valhalla? What were they trying to achieve? It's been a bit since I've sort of been excited for upcoming games. The game awards reveals weren't all that spectacular this year and there's so many of them that you hardly have time to drink them in and remember them. Compare that to what we got from Sony’s recent State Of Play from this past week and it's a night and day difference of what a good show should look like. A lot of video and very little talk in between. It likely could have been shortened just a hair but with things like this you sort of have to cater to all tastes a little bit. So the boring parts for me are the exciting parts for others. Still, all around, this was a good showing. Even more so because a lot of what was shown was not exclusive to the PlayStation platform. My two biggest stand outs were the John Wick game (jury is still out on how it'll play – what we got seemed mostly NOT actual gameplay. It's not a red flag but I'll wait and see) and Star Wars Galactic Racer. Let's focus a bit on that racer, shall we? It's made by a studio that has mostly employed folks from Criterion. The old Criterion from the Burnout days. And if what we saw was anything to go by (again, did we see gameplay? Are we sure? I'm still gonna wait but I'm hopeful) there is a heavy sense of Burnout DNA in that game. I don't mind that it's adorned in Star Wars clothing, I'll take it. For me, you could have wrapped it in a Sesame Street Kart racer but if the Burnout DNA was there, I would be to – day one. Nothing to dismiss from Wreckreation – another game with Burnout devs. I haven't played it yet and it didn't sell well but it exists and I'll eventually get around to playing it. I'll take any and all comers when it comes to my Burnout. Someone's bound to get it right and I'll probably still enjoy their attempts. Then there's that Shinobi Ops game with the Tenchu vibes. You know, seeing how that game plays, I wouldn't mind an isometric stealth title in a Splinter Cell package. Ubisoft, if you're listening (you aren't). It's been…4,563 days since a new Splinter Cell game (non-animated series or guest spot in another game franchise, remake, BBC radio drama, or VR exclusive) was released. Also, there's been 1,280 job losses in the gaming industry since January 1, 2026.

Xbox's marketing beat for 2025 was "The Year Of Obsidian Entertainment." Frankly, it made sense. No matter how you feel about the quality of these games, the fact that this team shipped Avowed, Outer Worlds 2, and Grounded 2 all within a calendar year (while many other teams within the first party fold continue to stumble around) was worthy of all the praise. Well, Obsidian has some thoughts on that marketing tagline. Indeed of it being a rallying cry, Obsidian's own Josh Sawyer defined as a "sign that something went wrong." Both Avowed and Outer Worlds 2 were in development for over six years and the result is that both these games failed to meet financial expectations. What lessons can they learn after shipping so many games? What can they do to cut development costs? What games should they make to meet Xbox's new profit margins? Part of the solution to the team at Obsidian is Avowed 2, but it's anyone's guess what lies beyond that. Thanks to a transparent conversation with Obsidian, the Dukes now dig into the company with this new perspective. With the chase for AI obliterating affordability in computing-related markets, it should come as no surprise that Sony may be deliberating a delay for PlayStation 6's rollout and release. But recent commentary from a well-connected financial analyst suggests that PS6's purported delay may be more substantial than we thought, perhaps precipitated by more factors than we initially thought. When does the gaming world need the next PlayStation? Could we go potentially several more years on PS5 alone? We discuss. Plus: Chris has played Highguard extensively and has a lot to say, Rockstar may take our advice and forego physical copies of GTAVI at launch to avoid spoilers, Ubisoft unions are agitating for an international strike at the publisher's many offices, MLB: The Show 26 gets its cover athlete and a release date, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Are mini-maps useful or distracting? How do we feel about Final Fantasy VII Remake's new "Streamlined Progression" update? Is New Game+ functionality catering to an older, diminishing audience? Did Dustin enjoy his romantic California getaway with Brad?
