In the new game Anno 117: Pax Romana, the Emperor has appointed you as governor, tasked with developing new provinces in the Empire. It's tempting to think of the Roman Empire as, well, Roman. But by its very nature the Empire consisted of people from a diverse range of cultures, with their own languages, traditions and architecture. How did the Romans keep this hodge-podge of territories together? And how much of what we think of as “Roman” is really borrowed from other ancient peoples? To help me grapple with the vastness of the Roman Empire, Matt Lewis is joined by Professor Benedict Lowe.Echoes of History is a Ubisoft podcast, brought to you by History Hit. Joe shares his insights with Cody, highlighting the transformative impact AI is having on industries ranging from healthcare to entertainment, and the ethical dilemmas that come along with its advancement. He emphasizes the importance of understanding AI's capabilities and limitations as society navigates this technological frontier. Following this engaging conversation, Joe shifts gears to talk about his recent experience with the open beta for Battlefield 6 multiplayer. He describes the thrill of jumping into the action, detailing the game's graphics, mechanics, and the overall gameplay experience. This leads to a broader discussion about the Battlefield franchise itself, where they reminisce about the evolution of the series, its iconic moments, and how it has shaped the first-person shooter genre over the years. They also explore the competitive landscape of multiplayer gaming and how Battlefield 6 stacks up against its rivals. As the episode progresses, there is a brief yet exciting talk about the revival of the beloved animated series King of the Hill. The guys reflect on the show's cultural significance and its unique portrayal of American suburban life, pondering what new storylines and character developments might be in store for the revival. They speculate about the potential for nostalgia to play a role in the new episodes and how the creators might balance honoring the original series while introducing fresh content for both old fans and new viewers. The episode takes an intriguing turn when they discuss a recent story suggesting that Ubisoft may have inadvertently leaked information regarding FX's plans to develop a live-action television series based on the popular video game franchise, Far Cry. Joe and Cody examine the implications of this potential adaptation, considering how the rich narratives and diverse settings of the Far Cry games could translate to the small screen. They also talk about the involvement of notable creators Rob McElhenney and Noah Hawley, speculating on how their unique storytelling styles might shape the series. This leads to a broader conversation about the trend of adapting video games into television and film, discussing both successes and failures in the industry. Overall, this episode is packed with insightful commentary and lively discussions that not only entertain but also provoke thought about the intersections of technology, gaming, and storytelling in contemporary culture.Official Website: https://www.comesnaturallypodcast.comOfficial Merchandise: https://shop.spreadshirt.com/comes-naturally-podcast/iTunes: http://tinyurl.com/kqkgackFacebook: http://tinyurl.com/myovgm8Tumblr: http://tinyurl.com/m7a6mg9Twitter: @ComesNaturalPodYouTube: http://tiny.cc/5snxpy

[4:51] So the web3 version of Reaper Actual will only be available via its own website.[5:45] Splitting the game into web2 and web3 versions isn't strong from a marketing pov.[8:30] The problem is they'll have a web3 game with most players playing the web2 version.[11:57] Shrapnel has raised $19.5 million for its global launch in Q1 2026.[13:03] It's funny to see how all the Avalanche fanboys ignore Shrapnel now it's moved to Gala.[18:05] Fully onchain game Craft World now accounts for 50% of all transactions on Ronin. Being a sociologist means that there often are only so many opportunities to “do sociology” in a way that has impact. It is not that sociology doesn't have value and practical applications. On the contrary, I would consider it one of the most useful and practical disciplines. But it can be hard to combine the opportunity to do practical application while working in an academic environment. I am very lucky that I found one such place to work.My guest today on Experience by Design had similar fortune. Dr. Ashley Guajardo first fancied a job as a marine biologist due to a love of dolphins. But a fear of the ocean and aversion to being in the water curtailed that path. Lucky for us, she found sociology instead. While at Brunel University she studied with a professor who worked at Ubisoft as a user researcher. This, along with her own love of video games, led to a research interest and career in the design of video games. As well as the current President of the Digital Games Research Association. Additionally she was recently inducted as a Higher Education Videogame Alliance Fellow.  Finally, she has recently left the University of Utah and will be starting at New York University as a professor and joining the Games Center faculty and staff. We cover a lot of ground around applied sociology and public scholarship, since along with her academic work, she also is a livestreamer on Twitch and content creator through her new effort “The Research Left Behind Podcast.” We cover how there can be fun in frustration and forming positive social relationships through gaming. We talk about how gender is portrayed in and how genders approach gaming. We talk about the perils of livestreaming as a woman, and what female content creators say about how they are perceived and targeted by viewers. Finally we talk about how academics need to make their content more accessible to broader audiences and disseminate our findings though alternate formats.Dr. Ashley Guajardo Webpage: https://amlbrown.com/Ashley Guajardo LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/professor-ashley/The Research Left Behind Podcast: https://www.youtube.com/@TheResearchLeftBehindProfessor_Ashley on Twitch: http://twitch.tv/professor_ashley

For nearly two decades, the Assassin's Creed video games have transported players to worlds of the past. From the hot sands of the medieval Middle East to the frozen Arctic of 18th century Canada; the variety of periods, people and places of the past that have been built from scratch, in detail, is immense. But video games are also meant to entertain, and there are gaps in our knowledge of history which must be filled when creating these interactive worlds for players to escape into. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesMarvel Studios may be sitting out of this weekend's storied San Diego Comic Hall H, but that hasn't stopped the big news and updates from pouring in. First, last week in a huge move, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige invited a small group of journalists to Marvel Studios' offices where he laid out the future for the next 5 to 7 years for the MCU. The biggest takeaway, arguably, was Feige's cagey hints regarding a likely reset to the universe during the events of Secret Wars, saying, “Reboot is a scary word; Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline — we're thinking along those lines.” Other tidbits from Feige's comments include a commitment to recasting the X-Men with new actors for their post Secret Wars film, an update on the Mahershala Ali-led Blade film and Sony's mandate that they stay away from a live action Miles Morales until the conclusion of the animated Spider-Verse trilogy. In Marvel news that looks to the more immediate future, director Matt Shakman shared that John Malkovich's role and performance as the Red Ghost has been removed from The Fantastic Four: The First Steps, which opens this week!Superman continues to live up to its name when it comes to its performance, as the superhero flick passed $409 million at the global box office in its second weekend of release. The $58 million second weekend, which is a respectable -54% drop from the opening weekend, is in keeping with 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine and bodes favorably compared to other recent releases from the comic book genre; plus coupled with other wins like A Minecraft Movie and Sinners, the latest success has helped Warner Bros become 2025's top earning studio with $1.32 billion in ticket sales. In other news, Variety confirmed Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira has been tapped to pen the Wonder Woman reboot for the DCU in addition to being attached to a live action Teen Titans project for the studio.Lots and lots of trailers hit the interwebs last week, lets run them down and talk about ‘em:Alien: EarthPredator: BadlandsTron: AresStranger Things S5Mortal Kombat IIChristopher Nolan made history by putting tickets on sale for The Odyssey exactly one year before the film's release, marking the first time any movie tickets have sold a full year in advance. The early sales were exclusively for IMAX 70mm screenings at select theaters, supporting Nolan's epic adaptation of the Greek myth that is being shot entirely on IMAX film cameras with a $250 million budget.Hulu announced that Futurama Season 13 will switch from its recent weekly release format to an all-at-once binge drop, with all 10 episodes premiering simultaneously on September 15 at 5 p.m. PT. The change marks a departure from the weekly rollout used for Seasons 11 and 12.Aaron Taylor-Johnson is set to star in Robert Eggers' upcoming werewolf horror film Werwulf, with Lily-Rose Depp in talks to join the project in what would reunite the Nosferatu co-stars. Nintendo and Sony's live-action Legend of Zelda movie has cast Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link, with Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto revealing the casting choices alongside first-look photos on social media. Taika Waititi is attached to direct a new feature film take on British comic book character Judge Dredd. Drew Pearce, the scribe known for Fall Guy and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, is attached to write the script.Disney's live action Lilo and Stitch has become the first film of 2025 to pass the $1 billion dollar mark at the international box office.Nearly five years after Netflix entered into a content agreement with Ubisoft, the streamer has ordered an Assassin's Creed live-action series, based on the best-selling video game franchise. The project will be created, showrun, and executive produced by Roberto Patino and David Wiener.

Your thoughts on the kiss-cam episodeAndrew Ross Sorkin's note yesterday about Andy Byron, the C.E.O. of a tech start-up caught on camera with a colleague from H.R. at a Coldplay concert, struck a nerve with DealBook readers, who have flooded our inbox with responses: “The moment seems to encapsulate the pervasive schadenfreude within our culture, especially our office culture, and a deep-seated animosity toward bosses and colleagues,” Andrew wrote. “It highlights a zero-sum mentality in which a colleague's success is perceived as your loss, and their failure your gain.” He added that, “The incident also underscores our surveillance state.”Here's what readers had to say:“The surveillance state is a bit aggressive of a take on this. They were lovingly embracing at a concert during a love song while the kiss cam was on the prowl.” — Bob McMurtry“The public is not just reacting to someone else's misfortune, it is reacting to the utter hypocrisy revealed yet again by those in power who dictate rules that others should follow, yet arrogantly disregard following them themselves. Employees endure hours of H.R. training on the impropriety of workplace relationships, especially between manager and subordinate, yet the actual HEAD of H.R. engages in an affair with her married C.E.O. Do you not see the specific irony of this outing?” — Jim Woidat“I don't think we commoners' resentment of C.E.O.s is so much about jealousy as it is about pay inequality (their pay rate today vs. what it was a few decades ago) and stuff like golden parachutes.” — Tom EshbaughWhat nobody is talking about:Before the kisscam: 12 executives (11 men and Chief People Officer Kristin Cabot); 6 directors (all men)They've also disabled their LinkedIn links and yetAstronomer board launches investigation after viral Coldplay 'kiss cam' video appears to show CEO embracing HR chiefDealBook Hot Take: Board members should be licensedJonathan Foster, a consultant and former managing director at Lazard, has served on more than 50 corporate boards. Along the way, he says, he has encountered directors who have stayed too long, or ones whose “knowledge of financial statements and M&A is lacking.” He drew on that experience in “On Board: The Modern Playbook for Corporate Governance,” his new book. One of his big ideas for improving director performance: “a license,” he told DealBook, like the kind required “for investment bankers, doctors, lawyers, even massage therapists.”That, he said, “might increase confidence in corporate directors.”How it would work: Some of the requirements Foster envisions include 10 years of work experience, being at least 35 and passing an exam covering legal standards, basic accounting and finance principles, and ethics. “It doesn't have to be particularly onerous,” he said, comparing it to the Series 7 exam for financial advisers. To issue licenses, he says, the New York Stock Exchange could oversee an organization like Harvard Business School or the National Association of Corporate Directors. He says he sees the arrangement as akin to how the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board operates under the authority of the S.E.C. That independent nonprofit group, he noted, “has commissioners, and they go do their thing, but they're ultimately responsible to and can be pre-empted by the S.E.C.”Is it workable? DealBook asked Edward Rock, a professor of corporate governance at the New York University School of Law. He said he worried that standardized requirements for diverse companies could disqualify board members with otherwise strong attributes. For example, he wrote in an email to DealBook, “Why would anyone want to prevent Mark Zuckerberg (28 at the time of Facebook's I.P.O.) or Larry Page and Sergey Brin” — both in their thirties when Google listed — “from serving on the board of directors of Facebook and Google?”(Foster said exceptions could be created, including for founders.)Shareholders have an incentive to demand the most qualified board members, Rock continued, and they tend to do so.Coca-Cola will roll out cane sugar version of namesake soda in the U.S. this fallPrivate jet sales are poised for takeoff thanks to a revived tax breakA federal tax change now lets companies write off the full cost of buying a private jet in year oneStarbucks' formerly remote CEO has bought a home in Seattle and he's ordering all staff back to the office 4 days a week Jeff Bezos taps former Amazon Alexa head to lead $10 billion Earth fundElon Musk's other companies could soon pour billions into his AI startupSpaceX, the rocket company Musk founded and controls, is reportedly investing $2 billion into xAI, his AI startup best known for the chatbot GrokElon Musk promises Tesla shareholders a vote over buying equity in his Grok startup: ‘If it was up to me, Tesla would have invested in xAI long ago'Musk's xAI faces European scrutiny over Grok's 'horrific' antisemitic postsElon Musk's AI chatbot Grok is now working with the federal governmentElon Musk's Neuralink filed as 'disadvantaged business' before being valued at $9 billionOpenAI warns that its new ChatGPT Agent has the ability to aid dangerous bioweapon developmentA Staggering Proportion of Teens Say Talking to AI Is Better Than Real-Life FriendsElon Musk announces Baby Grok AI chatbot designed specifically for children's learning needsTelegram CEO Pavel Durov on French probe against Elon Musk's Twitter: “at this point, any tech company can be declared a ‘criminal gang' in France". Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast

Sony-owned Santa Monica Studio is one of PlayStation's first party powerhouses. Responsible for the God of War franchise -- and, other than Kinetica early in the PS2 era, only the God of War franchise -- there was some excitement building about what was next. But what if it's just more God of War... at least kinda? New rumors indicate that Santa Monica is working on something more familiar than we might have hoped, and from our perspective, that can only mean one thing. We discuss. Plus: Sucker Punch expresses interest in returning to Infamous, Ghost of Yotei gets special edition PS5 hardware and a DualSense, HBO's second season of The Last of Us earns a ton of Emmy nominations, concept art for Deviation's cancelled PlayStation exclusive emerges, Dragon Quest VII is apparently being remade at Square Enix, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! With the demise of Xbox's Turn 10 Studio, is it time for PlayStation to port Gran Turismo to its rival's machine? Is Colin totally off-base with his desire for Arc System Works to create a PlayStation fighter instead of a Marvel one? What's the worst example in our personal gaming lives of losing a save file? Should Dustin enter into an illicit relationship with an eager listener? John and Ryan are back at it with a jam-packed episode of gaming goodness and industry buzz. Things kick off with their latest gaming-related pickups and what's currently stealing time from their backlogs. Then it's onto the mystical halls of Strixhaven, as John leads a recap of their ongoing D&D campaign discussing enchanted puzzles, morally murky professors, and all the magical mayhem you'd hope for from an academic arcane adventure. After the fantasy fades, the duo dives into real-world drama—first tackling Ubisoft's eyebrow-raising comments on microtransactions from its recent financial report and recent layoffs by Candy Crush makers King Games. Finally, the hosts wax nostalgic with a review of Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer on the Nintendo GameCube, revisiting wave mechanics, extreme sports culture, and whether this sleeper hit deserves a second ride. We dig into what makes it so fun, why fans are calling it a return to form for DK, and whether it's actually better than Super Mario Odyssey. We also unpack a new report revealing that FromSoftware is deep into development on a secret project codenamed “FMC.” Could it be a Dark Souls III remake, an Armored Core VI expansion, or something totally new? We look at the evidence and what it could mean for the future of the studio behind Elden Ring and The Duskbloods. Also in the mix:New Ghost Recon leaked by Ubisoft's CEOPokémon Presents goes live tomorrow—with DJ Pikachu??Rob's getting married, so no episode next week!Make sure to follow The Gaming Duo on Spotify and Apple Podcasts, leave us a review, and hop into our Discord—where friendships are built through gaming.
