Wes Bertrand and I discuss facets of healing trauma and activating 7th pillar true-self motivation. This is the fourth part in our rebooted series based on Nathaniel Branden's book, Six Pillars of Self-Esteem. This extension to the original series focuses on Branden's concluding chapter and what he calls the "seventh pillar." We will be reviewing each of the six pillars; the previous discussions focused on the what and the why of those practices, and this time we turn our attention to the how. INTRO MONTAGE: The 1989 film Parenthood is a humorous but touching look across three generations of a family system. The film's protagonist (Gil, played by Steven Martin), despite not having the reparenting/self-integration vocabulary, is determined to learn from his father's mistakes and apply them to his relationship with his own children. Throughout the film, he expresses great stress over the prospect of failing as a father. Clips from Parenthood are interspersed with some of the advice of Dr. Daniel Siegel. DISCUSSION: - today's theme: reparenting - started with severe abuse cases, but we could all use it - Re-parenting is a process of giving yourself what you never got: love, nurturing, and protection. - self-teaching is an important parallel to this process - this practice aids with self-integration HOW TO DO IT: 1. We will be reviewing each of the six pillars; the previous discussions focused on the what and the why of those practices, and this time we turn our attention to the how. INTRO MONTAGE: Domination systems scale up. From the home... to the schools... to the military and the police... to the state. DISCUSSION: - The main hurdles: (in embracing and working towards a better concept of self) - Systems of domination (abusive and neglectful parenting, schooling, religion, and government), which sacrifice needs and induce trauma - Eisler's Domination Cultures vs. Partnership Cultures (and the problems with that view) - Origins of Domination systems (are they an evolutionary step?) - Myth of Redemptive Violence. It enshrines the belief that violence saves, that war brings peace, that might makes right. It is one of the oldest continuously repeated stories in the world." - The LANGUAGE OF DOMINATION SYSTEMS - the relatively non-integrated and non-optimally designed brain that struggles to make sense of traumatizing experiences (being overpowered, overwhelmed, or put in jeopardy) and the sacrifice of needs in general - overcoming the kluge THE SIX PILLARS OF SELF-ESTEEM 1. We will be reviewing each of the six pillars; the previous discussions focused on the what and the why of those practices, and this time we turn our attention to the how. INTRO MONTAGE: Collectivism pulls us away from pursuits of self-knowledge, self-assertiveness and self-actualization, away from becoming who we are. The easiest forms of collectivism to carelessly embrace are tribalism and racism. Pseudo-self-esteem is often the result of such embrace. This montage is a 2016 update on Rand's thoughts on racism, Branden's 1971 warnings about anti-individualist psychology and our 2014 discussions on self-esteem. DISCUSSION: We aimed to focus this segment on the importance of self-knowledge and how it prepares us for self-education, but due to the gravity of the current political situation we spend a considerable amount of time on race, IQ, tribalism and a culture focused on non-essentials. In this latest installment of the Fall of Stefan Molyneux series, Wes Bertrand and I go through a laundry list of concerns over the inconsistent messages from Freedomain Radio. We could not help returning to the topics of IQ, race, genetics, R vs K, immigration, and Donald Trump. These ideas are the backbone of Stef’s thinking these days, overarching themes, so even though they've been covered thoroughly earlier in the series, we still briefly address them in this episode. Having said that, our discussion goes into many new areas, including the following: Adam Kokesh's appeal to Stef to debate him about soap opera politics and click bate podcast titles Stef's cult of personality, where he is not questioned Psychologizing by Stef and the FDR community Stef's abondonment of Objectivism and the individual (and his corresponding embrace of collectivism) Stef's inconsistencies about the win-win nature of the free market Is Donald Trump a lesser evil? Wes Bertrand and I are joined by author David Hathaway to discuss his excellent book Immigration: Individual vs National Borders. David's book provides a logically consistent view of immigration from a Libertarian's perspective. It details the various fallacies that are put forth by so called voluntaryists who advocate the use of state power to "protect" the borders. This show continues The Fall of Stefan Molyneux series. The principled arguments David makes during our conversation match those that Molyneux use to make. The Freedomain Radio shows linked below illustrate this. Unforutnately, Stef has done a complete 180 on immigration, as a supporter of Donald Trump and a proponent of using state violence to "close the borders." Wes Bertrand joins me to discuss a couple emails he recently sent to Stefan Molyneux and Mike DeMarco from Freedomain Radio. Those emails are reprinted below:   From: Wes Bertrand Subject: Ominous parallelsDate: September 4, 2015 at 8:41:45 PM EDTTo: Michael DeMarco Hello, Michael, and by extension, Stefan. I’ve appreciated the many helpful and insightful messages FDR has sent its listeners and viewers over the years. Thank you for all the time and effort you’ve expended to inspire individuals in so many enriching and enlightened ways. Though this is not a fan email, I hope you note the vital significance of it, so that your show is able to gain more respect from those who value truth. Basically, I’m writing to express my grave concerns about the ideas that have been promoted on your podcast, particularly in this episode:FDR3052 Donald Trump’s Immigration Plan: An Honest Conversationhttp://cdn.freedomainradio.com/FDR_3052_Trump_Immigration.mp3 I realize that both of you believe in the efficacy and morality of free markets instead of tyranny, which in the past have been articulated extensively. So, your advocacy of Trump’s anti-immigration views and his overall anti-economic agenda (which Jeffrey covered with sufficient clarity here: https://tucker.liberty.me/trumpism-the-ideology/ ) runs noticeably discordant. This particular topic of policing statist “borders" really hits home with me, despite not being an “illegal” person (one must be privy to The Anatomy Of Slavespeak - http://www.mind-trek.com/reports/tl07a.htm ). In 2009 I was detained (with threat of being gunned down) by the so-called U.S. border patrol for about 6 hours with my Indonesian friend Siska, who had a student visa, just not with her at the time since we were going to photograph wild flowers, so her sister was ordered to drive for hours to deliver her paperwork to us in the desert of Ocotillo, CA on her behalf. The papers her sister brought were insufficient for our captors, however. Had it not been for a bureaucratic paperwork glitch, she would have been deported that day (through no fault of her own). It might come as a surprise to you that we weren’t crossing any statist borders. The jackboots in southern California were running a check point approximately 12 miles inside the arbitrary statist line in the sand (still present here - https://goo.gl/maps/Y4Bj0 ), which I recounted in this episode of Complete Liberty Podcast:Episode 63 - Freedom to travel, reside, and work without government, where property rights are respected -> link When I heard Stefan read Trump's proposed policy of actually building a physical wall from California to Texas (the ultimate police-state boondoggle, aside from the insane NSA data mining process) in order to supposedly keep out Mexicans, as well as any Americans like myself desiring free travel, I waited for some sign of objective, critical philosophical analysis from him. Tragically, there was none, and I’m still waiting to hear it. Instead, I heard various economic fallacies about “illegals” harming the economy for “citizens" amidst the domestic ills of welfare statism. I encourage you to process your fears and concerns with the principles of voluntaryism (honoring individuals and markets, strictly disavowing governmental methods) as well as more evidence; Benjamin Powell has done a lot of freedom-oriented work in this realm - http://www.independent.org/aboutus/person_detail.asp?id=1023 . I’m puzzled about why you did not explicitly note the massive contradictions and intolerable harm involved in playing politics too, i.e., granting any legitimacy to the enforcement of statist “laws”—since no one has ANY right to such a rights-violating process. Not to explicitly and consistently denounce statist policies (i.e., aggression) is not to be philosophical. It’s a massive contradiction to say that, in the absence of a free market, we need to engage in the coercive, political means; such pragmatism only perpetuates rights-violations. The really odd thing is that I suspect you know that a paradigm shift in the philosophy of a society cannot happen with more advocacy of the political status quo (collectivistic, in-group/out-group, tax-fed, law-enforcing, welfare-statist thinking). As you know, many of the podcasters in the liberty community viewed your initiation of the DMCA take-down process on YouTube as being pro-IP and, thus, a major departure from your previously voluntaryist moorings. I disagreed with that position too, because it violated property rights, as well as Stefan’s previously stated beliefs against IP. Yet, the gravity of your recent choice to promote the totalitarian fascist agendas of Trump overshadows this (as does endorsing the costly, coercive strategies of the spurious “freedom club,” via the collectivistic abstraction of "Western civilization”). This strikes me as eerily similar to the intellectual inception of Nazi Germany—definitely no joke. Trump’s views are the epitome of populism, nationalism, and mob mentality, based on contradictions, fear, distrust, and aggression. There are ominous parallels in our culture to those of Nazi Germany (as Peikoff outlined decades ago: link ), which were evidenced at the end of your episode regarding a survey of Americans’ confused views on immigration. from http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424127887324577904578557352244619768"Their theses were often focused on racial and biological studies within populations, particularly where German minorities lived. The controversial borders that were drawn after 1919 in countries like Poland and Czechoslovakia rankled many of them.” from http://www.slate.com"Hitler, the suitable ruffian, could never have done it on his own. He could never have done it with all his party. He needed a climate of belief—the belief that Weimar was a problem requiring a solution. Having solved it, he was free to answer his version of the Jewish Question—the question that the intellectuals had fooled with on paper. Only the madmen among them had ever thought it needed to be answered with fire. But the sane ones had helped open the door for the avenger that the madmen had dreamed of.” wikipedia link Please let me know if you want to discuss these matters either in public or private. Understanding and promoting the principles of true freedom mean a great deal in an age of philosophical confusion and psychological unawareness. Thank you for your time and consideration, Wes p.s., I have a lengthy list of notes I’ve taken over the last year concerning various other ideas conveyed by FDR, because they diverge from logic and sound evidence in places, so clarification is needed. The issue above takes precedence for now, however.   From: Wes Bertrand Subject: Fwd: Ominous parallelsDate: September 24, 2015 at 3:37:12 PM EDTTo: Michael DeMarco Cc: Chris Stefanick Hi again, Michael. It’s been nearly three weeks since I sent the email below to you, and I’ve gotten no reply. Am I correct in assuming that you and Stefan do not want to have a conversation about this disturbing and confusing trend in FDR’s message these days? I want you to know that there is still the possibility to reverse course, make amends, and engage in restorative justice with your listeners who seek philosophical rigor and objectivity. As I see it, that is the only way you can regain credibility as a philosophy show, which I’d like to see you do. If you believe that I’ve somehow misinterpreted your present views, then let’s have a discussion about it (again, in private or on your call-in show). A few days after I sent this first email, I was waylaid by armed enforcers of the so-called U.S. border, while driving back from Ottawa (visited some dear voluntaryist friends there). After asking a litany of intrusive questions, which seems to be their primary tax-fed “job,” they demanded that I stay in their building while they proceeded to search every nook and cranny of my vehicle, including all my personal possessions, which took the better part of an hour; I was also personally searched. It was a complete violation of property rights, and when I conveyed this simple truth to them, among other liberty-oriented statements, they of course provided rationalizations in place of valid arguments—the mainstay of humans who are trying to downplay the significance of massive contradictions. If I had defended my person and property from their aggressive actions, I would have been murdered. This is the nature of “border enforcement”: individuals are harassed, suffer, and even die as a consequence. You know, Stefan used to not give disclaimers or caveats in his shows (like you've done on the ones that cheerlead for Trump), because he adhered to the principles of voluntaryism. Here’s an example (from over eight years ago) of the person who the liberty community admired, when he recognized the profound significance of the individual (based on reason, volition, and life-giving values) rather than the collective (based on spurious notions of race, genes, “ethnicity,” etc.):link I’ve Cd’d my friend Chris in this correspondence, because I plan on reading my email below that I sent you and Stefan (who also apparently un-contacted me on Skype) as well as sharing related thoughts on his Choice Conversations Podcast, when we record in about a week. We will also post Stef's “Immigration And Empathy” episode in order to show the stark contrast between promoting sound principles and deviating from them. If you take it off your server, I can put it in my Complete Liberty Podcast feed, since these ideas matter so much—individuals matter so much! Wes Bertrand is back to discuss his wonderful new book Complete Liberty Inside Out: Honoring Yourself and Others for Optimal Enrichment.  We take a hard look at not only the philosophy of liberty, which has been thoroughly covered by those who have come before us, but also the psychology of liberty, which has been not so much.  How does culture damage our minds, lessening our lives?  Religion, school, and the family are systems of domination, not unlike the state?  Sacrifice isn't a virtue?  What are the four stages of liberty?  Can this book build a bridge between the liberty community and the Non-Violent Communication community, two groups which each have half of it right?  We cover all this and more during this enlightening and entertaining discussion!   Get the book here:  http://completeliberty.com/pdf_and_ebook_downloads.html   Find more from Wes here:  http://completeliberty.com/   Here is the interview with Kevin Koskella discussed during the show:  http://choiceconversations.libsyn.com/the-mental-side-of-freedom   Please subscribe, rate, and review on itunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/choice-conversations/id315666764?mt=2   Like me on facebook and share with your friends:  https://www.facebook.com/ChoiceConversationsPodcast   Follow me on twitter and please retweet: https://twitter.com/ChoiceConvo   Subscribe to my youtube channel and like my videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3po4LKObROu3EoieVGdaFQ   Bumper music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WiPlcWBOFI&list=PLoe-H2xJOW56v_XOx1oJnZXOfCIr4YfSy&index=1

Author and blogger Rosyln Ross joins me to talk about her new book A Theory of Objectivist Parenting.  The school of philosophy known as objectivism, proposed by Ayn Rand, is very strong in most ways, but is decidedly lacking in the area of interpersonal relationships and especially parenting.  Roslyn shores that up nicely.   Do schools murder the authentic self?  Are high achieving youths numbing out in their down time?  Is Roslyn moving to Nicaragua so that she can take her kids into bars and casinos?  And what’s wrong with Sudbury schools anyway?  All this and more during today's show!   Note that when Roslyn mentions "Wes" and "Antony," she's referring to mutual friends, and prominent members of Team Choice, Wes Bertrand and Antony Sammeroff.   My apologies for the accoustics on this show.  This is the first podcast recorded in my new home, and I've not yet unpacked everything.  The room I was in had nothing soft to absorb sound, and thus it sounded like I was recording in a cave.  I'll be sure to remedy that in future episodes.     Find more from Roslyn here:    Her book - http://www.amazon.com/Theory-Objectivist-Parenting-Roslyn-Ross/dp/1502315548/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8 Her lectures - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCmDUquKAUQ  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJG1rrjD3lQ Her blog - http://roslynross.blogspot.com/        Follow me on twitter and please retweet: https://twitter.com/ChoiceConvo       Subscribe to my new youtube channel and like my videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3po4LKObROu3EoieVGdaFQ       Like me on facebook and share with your friends: https://www.facebook.com/ChoiceConversationsPodcast        Please leave a rating and review on itunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/choice-conversations/id315666764?mt=2           Bumper music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIh_AxO2m4M&index=2&list=PLoe-H2xJOW57M60JJT0mMl8gwp1MazHdP

My second collaboration with Kevin Geary, integrative health coach and founder of RebootedBody.com. Our discussion is built around two emails I received from listeners, each facing different challenges in their quests for health and fitness. WARM-UP: -The origins of RebootYourKids.com EMAILS DISCUSSED: #1: I was listening to your podcast about procrastination and you mentioned your diet. You said that you ate a lot of garbage and came up with excuses on why it is you can't or don't eat well. This resonates with me so much! I was wondering if you had any advice on getting the ball rolling with dietary changes. As someone who is an incredibly picky eater and doesn't know the first thing about what the human body needs, the task of eating well seems overwhelming. #2: I was introduced to the Low Carb/Bulletproof Diet via your show. I believe you were chatting with either Wes Bertrand or Richard and Tony about the diet - and how following it had given you more energy and an overall improvement in health. Without any further study or research, I decided to give the diet a try - that being a diet consisting of: no wheat, pasta, grains; very few fruits; lots of grass-fed beef & butter, organic chicken, vegetables, coconut oil, and saturated fats. One year and six months later, my health was in egregious condition. I developed a thyroid condition that resulted in bulging eyes; I developed frontal bossing (enlarged, protruding forehead); I developed TMJ and tongue thrust, which has resulted in slower speech. I also was suffering from both physical and mental lassitude - terrible brain fog, terrible fitness. What I listed above is just what is coming to mind at the moment; there is more, but I think that will do for now. My question to you is this: Assuming that you are still following the diet, how do you feel? Have you noticed any changes in your appearance: bulging eyes, frontal bossing, tooth decay, etc? Would you say that you are in better health since adhering to the Low Carb lifestyle? I'd really like to hear from you, and I hope I'm not being too snoopy. There is so much more I'd like to say, but I don't want to flood you with a tomb of haphazard thoughts. Part 10 in the survey series, A Renegade History Course. This is a live discussion with historian Thaddeus Russell, the author of A Renegade History of the United States. Thaddeus addresses questions and objections from the audience regarding our previous shows. Carlos Morales (http://www.truthovercomfort.net/) and Wes Bertrand (http://www.completeliberty.com/) are the co-hosts. Discussed Today: Most of the discussion in the second half of the Q&A is built off Ali's question: "My opinion is that stealing is always bad practice because of the golden rule of property rights (or the NAP) regardless of how big the group is you’re stealing from, how many handouts they receive from the state, or whether you get caught doing it. Thadeus claimed that his only problem with stealing is in cases where it does not serve your self interest in that you may get caught in which case future trade with that person or organization would be impossible or limited. But then he claims its okay steal from large corporations such as Walmart because they receive corporate handouts from the state. Let’s put aside the fact that it’s in Walmart’s self interest to accept these handouts and instead explore which place you’re better off stealing from based purely on self interest: Walmart or your locally-owner corner store. If you are caught stealing from the small business the only cost is that you can’t shop there. Worst case scenario the word spreads among business owners, you have a poor reputation in this limited sphere of perhaps your town, and you have to move to another town. If you get caught stealing from a large chain like Walmart and tarnish your reputation with them you are worse off than in the other example because Walmart is everywhere. It doesn’t matter where you are, if you’re blacklisted by Walmart you are arguably much worse off than if you can no longer shop at Bob’s discount beverages. So by Thadeus’s logic, wouldn’t you be better off stealing from small businesses because of their limited influence than a big corporation like Walmart?" We also return to the objectivism vs. relativism debate, and we then touch on academia, parenting and Stefan Molyneux. Discussed: -everything going on inside me is weird and alien to the rest of the world -we have this natural desire to be seen, heard, understood -what would happen if we extended the courtesy we have for adults to children -Understanding the need or the fear behind scolding? -When we convey love, appreciation, acceptance, respect and empathy we make the child visible -When we convey Indifference, ridicule, condemnation and scorn drive child into "lonely underground of invisibility" -Inappropriate Praise -evaluative praise vs appreciative praise -state the facts and leave the evaluation to the child -Don't create "approval addicts" -A child needs sanity for healthy development -parents who can acknowledge that they make mistakes -embed values into family life, don't just preach them THE SIX PILLARS OF SELF-ESTEEM 1. Wes Bertrand and I continue our series based on Nathaniel Branden's book, Six Pillars of Self-Esteem. Today's show includes a discussion based on the sixth pillar, the Practice of Living With Integrity. Do your ideals, convictions, standards, beliefs and behavior line up? Do most people know what their ideals, convictions, standards and beliefs are? The root of self-esteem is not in accomplishment or output, but in our practices. However in school, we are only our output. WORDS AND BEHAVIORS MATCH “Integrity is the integration of ideals, convictions, standards, beliefs—and behavior. When our behavior is congruent with our professed values, when ideals and practice match, we have integrity. If they don't, we lose face in out own eyes." SUPERIORS AND AUTHORITY FIGURES untrustworthy because of incongruence Being an adult with an inconsistent boss was stressful enough "ONLY I WILL KNOW..." -dispel the idea that only the judgment of others counts -TRUTH: only mine counts when it comes to self-esteem LIVING WITH GUILT (original sin is anti-self esteem) 1. face and accept full reality, without disowning or avoidance 2. seek to understand why we did what we did 3. acknowledge to others the harm we've done, convey understanding of consequences 4. take restorative action 5. firmly commit to behaving differently in the future SELF ESTEEM isn't taught but IRRATIONAL STANDARDS ARE -religious teachings that damn pleasure, state, culture, society courage to challenge deepest assumptions of "good" -teaming living consciously with need for integrity to examine values we were taught -Practice of Integrity has inconsistencies in our lives explore this! why? -challenge: high personal standards while feeling like we're living in a moral sewer, the feeling of a lonely and heroic undertaking PRINCIPLE OF RECIPROCAL CAUSATION behaviors that generate SE are also expressions of SE practice of pillars genesprates a need for them, not work anymore (exercise or nutrition) THE SIX PILLARS OF SELF-ESTEEM 1. Topic: Wes Bertrand joins me to discuss Nathaniel Branden's book, Breaking Free. Wes is currently doing on series on this book on Complete Liberty Podcast. "Do you believe you're worthless? Ineffectual? Mediocre? Helpless? Nathaniel Branden, best selling author of The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem introduces a revolutionary method to show you how repressed feelings and forgotten past experiences may have shaped your current sense of self. Breaking Free introduces 22 key questions designed to break down repressive barriers. Questions such as: Were you taught to be an independent thinker, or encouraged to be obedient? Were you free to express your fears openly, without fear of punishment? Did your parents' behavior towards you make you feel guilty? Were you taught to have a healthy and positive attitude toward sex and toward your own body? Through dramatized case studies, Branden reveals how responding to these key questions can expose you to new ways of thinking about yourself and your past. Breaking Free will liberate you from your inhibitions and allow you to have a greater sense of yourself and your true potential.." -GoodReads.com Complete Liberty Episode 165 - Breaking Free, part 1 Complete Liberty Episode 167 - Breaking Free, part 2 Complete Liberty Episode 170 - Breaking Free, part 3 Complete Liberty Episode 171 - Breaking Free, part 4 Complete Liberty Episode 172 - Breaking Free, part 5 This is an edited version the 10-18-12 Ustream-only live show. Schelling and Hegel are Lutherans that ascribed to “inner freedom”. And the French Revolution externalized that “inner freedom”. German Idealism post Kant and the Enlightenment Meaning of Idealism - The word "idealism" has more than one meaning. The philosophical meaning of idealism here is that the properties we discover in objects depend on the way that those objects appear to us as perceiving subjects, and not something they possess "in themselves," apart from our experience of them. The very notion of a "thing in itself" should be understood as an option of a set of functions for an operating mind, such that we consider something that appears without respect to the specific manner in which it appears. The question of what properties a thing might have "independently of the mind" is thus incoherent for Idealism[citation needed][clarification needed]. Central theme – the universe as a coherent whole and the role freedom plays in that conception Differences in formulating an underlying principle to Kant's work Spinoza – Sought to show mind and matter as the same basic substance Schelling – The absolute as a “neutral identity” that underlies both the subject and the object Fichte – Philosophical system needs to be based on a single underlying principle – Absolute Subjectivity – i.e. All reality is a subjective (mind) whole Hegel – The Phenomenology of Spirit Absolute Idealism – “Hegel. It is Hegel's account of how being is ultimately comprehensible as an all-inclusive whole. Hegel asserted that in order for the thinking subject (human reason or consciousness) to be able to know its object (the world) at all, there must be in some sense an identity of thought and being. Otherwise, the subject would never have access to the object and we would have no certainty about any of our knowledge of the world. To account for the differences between thought and being, however, as well as the richness and diversity of each, the unity of thought and being cannot be expressed as the abstract identity "A=A". Absolute idealism is the attempt to demonstrate this unity using a new "speculative" philosophical method, which requires new concepts and rules of logic. According to Hegel, the absolute ground of being is essentially a dynamic, historical process of necessity that unfolds by itself in the form of increasingly complex forms of being and of consciousness, ultimately giving rise to all the diversity in the world and in the concepts with which we think and make sense of the world. Master-slave dialectic - The passage describes, in narrative form, the development of self-consciousness as such in an encounter between what are thereby (i.e., emerging only from this encounter) two distinct, self-conscious beings; the essence of the dialectic is the movement or motion of recognizing, in which the two self-consciousnesses are constituted each in being recognized as self-conscious by the other. This movement, inexorably taken to its extreme, takes the form of a "struggle to the death" in which one masters the other, only to find that such lordship makes the very recognition he had sought impossible, since the bondsman, in this state, is not free to offer it.It is a story or myth created by Hegel in order to explain his idea of how self-consciousness dialectically sublates into what he variously refers to as Absolute Knowledge, Spirit, and Science. As a work the Phenomenology may be considered both as an independent work, apparently considered by Hegel to be an a priori for understanding the Science of Logic, and as a part of the Science of Logic, where absolute knowledge is explained. History as Self-Realization – Patterns where the parts fit the whole, a fractal A pattern of subjective awareness of the pattern towards freedom, both intrinsically and extrinsically. The Hegelian Dialectic Attempted to create a new system of logic that would supplant Aristotle's deduction syllogism Dialectical Thinking – Hegelian dialectic The concept of dialectics was given new life by Hegel (following Fichte), whose dialectically dynamic model of nature and of history made it, as it were, a fundamental aspect of the nature of reality (instead of regarding the contradictions into which dialectics leads as a sign of the sterility of the dialectical method, as Kant tended to do in his Critique of Pure Reason).[26][27] In the mid-19th century, the concept of "dialectic" was appropriated by Marx (see, for example, Das Kapital, published in 1867) and Engels and retooled in a non-idealist manner, becoming a crucial notion in their philosophy of dialectical materialism. Thus this concept has played a prominent role on the world stage and in world history. In contemporary polemics, "dialectics" may also refer to an understanding of how we can or should perceive the world (epistemology); an assertion that the nature of the world outside one's perception is interconnected, contradictory, and dynamic (ontology); or it can refer to a method of presentation of ideas and conclusions (discourse). According to Hegel, "dialectic" is the method by which human history unfolds; that is to say, history progresses as a dialectical process. Hegelian dialectic, usually presented in a threefold manner, was stated by Heinrich Moritz Chalybäus as comprising three dialectical stages of development: a thesis, giving rise to its reaction, an antithesis, which contradicts or negates the thesis, and the tension between the two being resolved by means of a synthesis. Although this model is often named after Hegel, he himself never used that specific formulation. Hegel ascribed that terminology to Kant.[28] Carrying on Kant's work, Fichte greatly elaborated on the synthesis model, and popularized it. On the other hand, Hegel did use a three-valued logical model that is very similar to the antithesis model, but Hegel's most usual terms were: Abstract-Negative-Concrete. Hegel used this writing model as a backbone to accompany his points in many of his works. The formula, Thesis-Antithesis-Synthesis, does not explain why the Thesis requires an Antithesis. However, the formula, Abstract-Negative-Concrete, suggests a flaw in any initial thesis—it is too abstract and lacks the negative of trial, error and experience. For Hegel, the Concrete, the Synthesis, the Absolute, must always pass through the phase of the Negative, that is, Mediation. This is the actual essence of what is popularly called Hegelian Dialectics. To describe the activity of overcoming the negative, Hegel also often used the term Aufhebung, variously translated into English as "sublation" or "overcoming," to conceive of the working of the dialectic. Roughly, the term indicates preserving the useful portion of an idea, thing, society, etc., while moving beyond its limitations. (Jacques Derrida's preferred French translation of the term was relever).[29] In the Logic, for instance, Hegel describes a dialectic of existence: first, existence must be posited as pure Being (Sein); but pure Being, upon examination, is found to be indistinguishable from Nothing (Nichts). When it is realized that what is coming into being is, at the same time, also returning to nothing (in life, for example, one's living is also a dying), both Being and Nothing are united as Becoming.[30] As in the Socratic dialectic, Hegel claimed to proceed by making implicit contradictions explicit: each stage of the process is the product of contradictions inherent or implicit in the preceding stage. For Hegel, the whole of history is one tremendous dialectic, major stages of which chart a progression from self-alienation as slavery to self-unification and realization as the rational, constitutional state of free and equal citizens. The Hegelian dialectic cannot be mechanically applied for any chosen thesis. Critics argue that the selection of any antithesis, other than the logical negation of the thesis, is subjective. Then, if the logical negation is used as the antithesis, there is no rigorous way to derive a synthesis. In practice, when an antithesis is selected to suit the user's subjective purpose, the resulting "contradictions" are rhetorical, not logical, and the resulting synthesis is not rigorously defensible against a multitude of other possible syntheses. The problem with the Fichtean "Thesis-Antithesis-Synthesis" model is that it implies that contradictions or negations come from outside of things. Hegel's point is that they are inherent in and internal to things. This conception of dialectics derives ultimately from Heraclitus.Hegel has outlined that the purpose of dialectics is "to study things in their own being and movement and thus to demonstrate the finitude of the partial categories of understanding"[31] Sublation – Aristotle's law of identity, particular self-identities in deductive patterns – Hegel sought to dissolve the static view in favor of a movement towards the whole The whole is fractal in nature; i.e. it preserves what it overcomes.  Therefore, it preserves contradictions as a movement towards a synthesis. Quantum Theory, Postmodern Cosmology, Chaos Theory, Computer Interfacing, and Ecology, as well as Cybernetics, ascribe to parts fitting into a whole. Sublation is the term that signifies the contradiction of overcoming and at the same time preserving that which it overcomes. Negation - Hegel calls this dynamic aspect of his thinking the power of "negation". It is by means of this "negativity" of thought that the static (or habitual) becomes discarded or dissolved, made fluid and adaptable, and recovers its eagerness to push on towards "the whole". Source: Introduction Hegel by Lloyd Spencer and Andrzej Krauze Dialectical thinking derives its dynamic of negation from its ability to reveal "contradictions" within almost any category or identity. Hegel's "contradiction" does not simply mean a mechanical denial or opposition. Indeed, he challenges the classical notion of static self-identity, A = A, or A not= non-A. By negation or contradiction, Hegel means a wide variety of relations difference, opposition, reflection or relation. It can indicate the mere insufficiency of a category or its incoherence. Most dramatically, categories are sometimes shown to be self-contradictory. Three Kinds of Contradiction Being – Nothing / Quantity – Quality Essence – Inner and Outer, Intrinsic and Extrinsic, Implicit and Explicit Concept – Particularity and Universality, out of which, abstractly, we see the opposed principles produces a synthesis called Individuality Thesis – Antithesis – Synthesis Thesis – A thought affirmed which on reflection proves itself unsatisfactory, incomplete or contradictory… Antithesis – Which propels the affirmation of its negation, the anti-thesis, which also on reflection proves inadequate… Synthesis – and so is again negated Kant's Dialectic vs. Hegel's Dialectic Kant's dialectic logic of transcendent noumena “things in themselves”, which operates independently of experience Hegel's view contrary to Kant's transcendent is that of reality as a totality which gives true knowledge Absolute Knowledge - Knowing, for Hegel, is something you do. It is an act. But it is also presence of mind. Hegel seems to hold out the vision, even the experience, of thinking as self-presence. Of being present to, or with, oneself of being fully self-possessed, self-aware. Of self-consciousness as a huge cosmic accomplishment. Source: Introduction Hegel by Lloyd Spencer and Andrzej Krauze Reading Hegel gives one a sense that the movement of thought will coincide with a vision of harmony that awaits us at the end of the whole process. Every serious reader of Hegel can bear witness to the intoxication of such moments. Absolute Knowledge, in the form of the complete self-consciousness and self-possession of spirit, is only available at the end-point of the think process. But there is no distinction possible between the driving energy of thought and this sense of harmony and fulfilment in the whole. It is ultimately the universal which has the upper hand. As Hegel's Logic puts it ... Everything depends on the "identity of identity and non-identity". In philosophy, the latest birth of time is the result of all the systems that have preceded it, and must include their principles: and so, if, on other grounds, it deserves the title of philosophy, it will be the fullest, most comprehensive, and most adequate system of all. "Logic is man’s method of reaching conclusions objectively by deriving them without contradiction from the facts of reality—ultimately, from the evidence provided by man’s senses. If men reject logic, then the tie between their mental processes and reality is severed; all cognitive standards are repudiated, and anything goes; any contradiction, on any subject, may be endorsed (and simultaneously rejected) by anyone, as and when he feels like it." -Any Rand “Nazism and Subjectivism,” The Objectivist, Feb. 1971 Topic: Wes Bertrand joins me to discuss the foundational concepts in the science of logic.
