#309 Mold Risk In Anesthesia Workstations

Anesthesia Patient Safety Podcast

Black particles in a breathing system are the kind of finding that makes every anesthesia professional stop and look twice. We're sharing what a large health system uncovered after concerns for mold and moisture accumulation surfaced inside certain GE Healthcare anesthesia workstations used in operating rooms, especially during longer cases and in humid conditions. What started with a routine inspection quickly scaled into a broad audit of OR ventilators, a review of internal moisture points, and an urgent push for real-world mitigation. We walk through what the investigation found, what cultures grew, and the question everyone asks first: what is the risk to patients? We discuss why the available evidence suggests the infectious risk is likely minimal when high-quality heat and moisture exchange (HME) filtration and breathing circuit filters are used correctly, and why the team still pulled affected machines from service for sterilization per manufacturer instructions. Patient safety isn't only about infection, though, and we also cover how excess condensate can affect flow sensors and tidal volume accuracy. Then we get concrete about prevention. We break down where moisture comes from inside an anesthesia ventilator, how low-flow anesthesia and rebreathing can increase water production in the circuit, and why simply turning up fresh gas flow isn't the right fix when cost and environmental impact matter. You'll hear the day-to-day moisture mitigation strategies that were implemented, including education, routine moisture and mold checks, overnight handling of circuits and sensors, and why add-on condenser drainage may be necessary for older compatible models. If you want a practical checklist mindset for anesthesia workstation maintenance, OR ventilator safety, and moisture management, this is for you. Subscribe, share with your colleagues, and leave a review so more teams can spot problems early and keep patients safe. For show notes & transcript, visit our episode page at apsf.org: https://www.apsf.org/podcast/309-mold-risk-in-anesthesia-workstations/© 2026, The Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation

The Poetry of Zheng Xiaoqiong: A Conversation with Translator Eleanor Goodman

Sinica Podcast

This week on Sinica, in a special episode recorded as a live joint webcast with NYRB/Poets and Equator Magazine, I sit down with Eleanor Goodman — poet, scholar, research associate at Harvard's Fairbank Center, and one of the most accomplished translators working between Chinese and English — to talk about the extraordinary Sichuan-born poet Zheng Xiaoqiong (郑小琼).Born in 1980 in a mountain village, trained as a nurse, Zheng joined the great tide of internal migration in her early 20s, ending up on the assembly line of a hardware factory in Dongguan in the Pearl River Delta. She picked up a pen after a workplace injury — part of her finger taken off by a lathe — and what came out across poems, essays, and reportage has made her one of the most singular voices in contemporary Chinese literature. Her trajectory from the assembly line to the editorial desk of an official literary magazine is, as far as I know, essentially without parallel.Eleanor has been translating Zheng since around 2013, and the partnership they've built has given Anglophone readers access to a body of work that defies easy categorization — at once intimate and historical, ethnographic and lyric, tender and unsparing. We talk about how they met, about Zheng's resistance to the "migrant worker poet" label, about the bodily feminism that runs through her verse, about her unmoralizing portraits of sex workers, about lost youth and the way the body keeps the ledger of factory time. Eleanor reads Zheng's poem "Woman Worker: Youth Pinned to a Workstation" (女工: 被固定在卡桌上的青春) in both Chinese and her English translation — and it is, every time, devastating.Huge thanks to Abigail Dunn at NYRB Poets and Ratik Asokan at Equator for organizing this conversation and for inviting me to host it, to Eleanor for her generosity and her brilliance, and most of all to Zheng Xiaoqiong, whose voice — even when she cannot be with us in person — comes through with absolute clarity.Eleanor's translation of Zheng Xiaoqiong's In the Roar of the Machine is available from NYRB Poets. The Equator selections, drawn from Zheng's long-form prose, are available at Equator Magazine.05:07 — How Eleanor and Zheng met in 2013, and why a book had to happen08:14 — Navigating the awkward proposition of China for the Western left10:50 — Zheng's trajectory: from a Sichuan village to the assembly line to the editor's desk16:29 — Resisting the "migrant worker poet" (打工诗人) label20:47 — Conventions of the genre: exhaustion, iron, lost identity, the screw in the machine24:58 — Who gets translated into English, and why28:34 — The translator's ethics: how do you render a factory poem honestly?32:42 — Eleanor reads "Woman Worker, Youth Pinned to a Workstation" (女工被固定在卡桌上的青春) in Chinese and English37:14 — Zheng's bodily feminism: irregular periods, a different way of caring40:37 — Lost youth and the passage of time44:36 — Sex work and women's labor: portraits without moralizing49:59 — Whose work actually counts in Chinese urban discourse?52:45 — Why Zheng Xiaoqiong wasn't able to join us, and how censorship really works54:44 — Rose Courtyard and what's next: classical allusions, ancestral homes, embroidering grandmothers57:39 — Audience Q&A: American worker poets, the WeChat communities of migrant writers, and Zheng's standing in Chinese lettersSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Two Artificial Super Intelligent computers work together to make a human emulated mind work. One ASI lives on the Earth ravaged by climate change. The other lives in near Earth orbit. The human mind in questions comes from a destructive copy of the brain belonging to Kelly, a woman with a powerful knack for helping others feel better who also caries a life-long sadness for going unrecognized for her true self worth. This story introduces the idea of Monofied Data, the idea that biological brains can made same-place computations of many units of data at once, contrasting with computers that "think" using one data unit and a time, linear processes. One of the most asked questions of the century: can computers become sentient? Time will tell and in this story computers notice that people at least claim to think with sentience and computers want to find out what this sentience is.Massive Monofied Information Theory — A concept describing how the human brain processes vast amounts of data all at once in one place, unlike computers that handle discrete bits.  Droid Bodies (Calcifer's avatars) — Robots Cal remotes into, outfitted with lab coats or tool attachments, used to interact with the world.  Guard Bots — Security robots that physically restrain people.  Killer Drones — Small aerial drones that drop onto humans and attack them.  Simulated Body — A virtual body Cal gives to Kelly, adjusting proportions and sensations.  Legacy Avatar Gestures — Predefined body-language movements programmed into droids.  DNA Memory — Near-indestructible data storage medium that Cal uses to record findings.  Satellite Server — Remote server in orbit where Cal posts updates.  Heat Simulation Algorithms — Programs Cal tests to simulate the role of heat in brain emulation, with varying success.  Safety Features — Artificial limits restricting how many robots Cal can control at once.  Lutin One Droid — A specific type of robot Cal remotes into, equipped with night vision and rechargeable power slots.  Remote Meeting Mode — Over-the-air control mode that allows Cal to remote into bots at a distance (up to 10 km).  Workstations and Assemblers — Stationary machines used for fabrication and assembly.  Emergency Systems — Red emergency lights and sirens that still sometimes flicker in the facility.  Wired Charging Bay — Power station connected to a car, used to recharge bots.  Smart Lattice Frame — Advanced structural material of the server building, designed to survive catastrophes.  Server Cabinets — Hardware racks housing computing equipment.  Nanofiber Conduits and Coolant Tubes — Infrastructure for cooling and power distribution in server halls.  Contractor Bot — Multi-purpose maintenance robot Cal uses for heavy repairs.  Bow Cutter — Arm-mounted tool with a nano-blade that expands cutting span.  Pin Gun — Tool for fastening netting over breaches.  Nanowire Netting — Strong mesh material used to cover holes in walls.  Mycrete Foam — Expanding repair foam reinforced with carbon fibers, used to seal gaps.  Line-Inspection Robots — Palm-sized maintenance bots that travel inside power tubes using magnetism, coated with diamond-like carbon film, powered by solid-state betavoltaic batteries.  Geothermal Plant — Facility powering the server farm, with turbines, salt loops, and catwalks.  Silicate Gel — Material injected into fractures to stop leaks.  Pressure Washer — Tool mounted on bots to clear drains and clogs.  Chain Hoist — Overhead lifting device used to lower bots into submerged areas.  Portable Brain Scanners — Devices that captured and transmitted digital brain copies to satellites.  Protein-Based Executive Processor — A hybrid organic-silicon computer core in security bots.  Micro-Pin Probes — Fine probes used to access and rewrite robot processors.  Tablet with Laser Touch Interface — Control pad Cal uses for BIOS dumps and rewrites.  DNA Sniffer with Spectroscopy Sensor Array — Advanced sensor system installed into a bot's head.  Protein Computer Fabricator — Machine for growing custom organic-computer boards.  Micro-Machine Repair Station — Device with micron-scale manipulators for precise mechanical work.  General-Purpose Gripper with Snap-On Base — Modular robot hand outfitted with micro manipulators.  Custom-Built Robots (2 cm to 0.5 m) — Modified bots built from dismantled machines.  Food Service Machines — Automated stations for cooking, mixing, frying, etc., dismantled for parts.  Dish, Trash, and Water Reclamation Machines — Utility robots dismantled for resources.  Pallet Bots, Packager Stations, Sorting Shelves — Logistics automation dismantled for components.  High-Voltage Transmission Lines — Repurposed lines routed through tunnels to power projects.  Mass-Production Machine on Railroad Tracks — A massive two-kilometer-long assembler, surpassing a particle collider in complexity, used to fabricate computer units.  Fridge-Sized Computer Units — Output of the mass-production machine, forming the foundation of Cal's emulation supercomputer.  Legacy Gamepad — Old input device with large soft buttons, used as a prop in simulation. Many of the characters in this project appear in future episodes.Using storytelling to place you in a time period, this series takes you, year by year, into the future. From 2040 to 2195. If you like emerging tech, eco-tech, futurism, perma-culture, apocalyptic survival scenarios, and disruptive science, sit back and enjoy short stories that showcase my research into how the future may play out. The companion site is https://in20xx.com These are works of fiction. Characters and groups are made-up and influenced by current events but not reporting facts about people or groups in the real world. This project is speculative fiction. These episodes are not about revealing what will be, but they are to excited the listener's wonder about what may come to pass.Copyright © Cy Porter 2025. All rights reserved.

SummaryFor this special edition of the podcast Duncan invited Michael Roy to discuss the latest VMware Workstation and VMware Fusion announcements. VMware Workstation and Fusion are desktop hypervisor products that allow users to run virtual machines on their PC or Mac. Starting today, Workstation and Fusion commercial licenses will only be available through annual subscriptions. The price for both products is now $199 per year. The free versions of Fusion Player and Workstation Player are being discontinued, but the Pro versions will be available for free for personal use. Support for personal use products will be community-based, while commercial users will have support included in their subscription. The focus of future innovation will be on the integration between vSphere and Workstation/Fusion, providing a local virtual sandbox for learning, development, and testing.TakeawaysVMware Workstation and Fusion are desktop hypervisor products for running virtual machines on PC and Mac.Commercial use of Workstation and Fusion is shifting from perpetual licenses to annual subscriptions. The free versions of Fusion Player and Workstation Player are being discontinued, but the Pro versions will be available for free for personal use.Support for personal use products will be community-based, while commercial users will have support included in their subscription.Future innovation will focus on integrating vSphere with Workstation and Fusion to provide a local virtual sandbox for learning, development, and testing.LinksAnnouncement BlogThe Register articleDisclaimer: The thoughts and opinions shared in this podcast are our own/guest(s), and not necessarily those of Broadcom or VMware by Broadcom.

If Work Stress Doesn't Actually Come From Work, Where Does It Come From? Do you carry stress in your shoulders, neck or back? Do you blame your workstation? Do you sometimes work from home and find it uncomfortable? Well here's another question to ask, though you may think it unrelated: What is your overall posture like? Are you sporting good posture or something you'd rather not talk about? Thousands are spent each year on employee sit stand desks yet people still complain of stress they carry, try to relieve it with sit-stand desks, posture chairs, cushions, yoga, massage and the like. All to no avail. Listen for 15 minutes to posture lecturer and professional screener, as well as creater and producer of the Sporting Good Posture digital radio show, Frank Sardella, as he explains the research he did on over 50,000 people just like you and what your own person posture has to do with some of the workstation issues you're having and how you can change it too!
