Breaking Silence: Navigating the Complex Path to Disability Inclusion in the Workplace

Discover why tearing down the barriers to disability disclosure is more than a corporate responsibility; it's a journey toward true societal change. This week, Neil Milliken, Debra Ruh and Antonio Santos shed light on why individuals with disabilities often choose silence over sharing despite the increased acceptance of diversity in today's workplaces. The episode peels back the layers of this complex issue, looking at the societal challenges and job market uncertainties that can dissuade even the most confident from self-identification. We also examine how misconceptions about who is part of the disability community impact self-identification rates and consider the role of technology as an unwritten ally in supporting those with disabilities. In a world where data shapes the future of inclusivity, we probe the importance of this information in bridging the disability pay gap. Just as the data-driven approach has helped narrow the gender pay gap, it could be the key to empowering disabled employees. Our discussion also scrutinizes the unexpected shortcomings in non-profits and charities, where advocacy for the disabled doesn't always align with inclusive practices. We call out the need for a corporate culture that doesn't just wear inclusivity as a badge but weaves it into the very fabric of its existence, creating systemic change that reflects the true diversity of our society.Support the showFollow axschat on social mediaTwitter:https://twitter.com/axschathttps://twitter.com/AkwyZhttps://twitter.com/neilmillikenhttps://twitter.com/debraruhLinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/antoniovieirasantos/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/axschat/Vimeohttps://vimeo.com/akwyz

Hosted by Antonio Santos, Debra Ruh and Neil Milliken.6 years ago, at age 35, Wendy became the Queen of Social Distancing when she became a disabled chronic Lyme disease fighter. Feeling exhaustion, pain and like daily flu with autoimmunity issues that makes Wendy catch what sicknesses others have when in groups — meant she couldn't travel on a plane, go to work meetings or even go with her boys to their school events.   In 2015 from her recliner, she invented the YES to SEX app, a safe way to learn about sexual consent. It was then that she realized if domestic violence event began around a sexual encounter — no one could just sit-up or run to the bathroom with their phone and have a conversation asking for Emergency help. She also learned that if a person called and hung-up, the Emergency operator would have no idea where they were calling from.   To fix these Emergency Caller issues, in 2016 Wendy invented SafeTracer's distress transmission: a universal update to the standard “Emergency SOS” caller tools on every smartphone and wearable. This is a completely new user interface designed to stop SOS butt-dials, while it shares every caller's SOS location and helps protect every victim in an emergency situation, especially people that can't talk, hear or move when danger strikes.   In 2019, she took on the DisabledCEO title to show the world that even though she is disabled, she can accomplish amazing things — this was inspired by the Valuable 500's CEOs talking about their invisible disabilities.   Educating the world's top executives about the problems with Emergency Calls being non-accessible and non-usable to so many millions of victims through social media, while marketing my SafeTracer and disability-focused FastFactsSOS products exclusively online to Apple and Google was a big challenge until COVID-19 hit. Now everyone is working from home, they don't expect me to fly out to conferences to be able to meet in person — with phone calls and Zoom meetings being commonplace, this works so much better for me!   As a Founder's Circle member of the Global Alliance Disaster Recovery Acceleration, she ready to help make everyone in this world feel safer and be better protected on every Emergency Call by 2021.   Wendy knows she can make this universal Emergency Caller update happen, and asks for the continued support and backing of the disability community, as convincing big tech's Public Safety and Accessibility departments about these over-looked lifesaving Emergency Caller needs is not easy, but it is definitely possible — and she patented solutions all ready to help save people from Emergency danger worldwide.

He had a butter knife at his side pointed down. His death sparked widespread protests and prompted a federal investigation and ultimately resulted in the resignation of then-San Francisco police chief Greg Suhr.  Mario was shot and killed by San Francisco police officers Charles August, Winson Seto, Antonio Santos, Nicholas Cuevas and Scott Phillips in 2015. Then-San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón declined to criminally charge the officers. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors declared Mario Woods Remembrance Day to take place every year on July 22nd, Mario's birthday. Mario is survived by his two brothers, Monroe Whitt and Michael Woods Jr., and Gwendolyn Woods, his mother, who has relentlessly fought for justice for her son. The following is an edited excerpt from a longer interview with Gwendolyn Woods: ______ Mario was quiet, very unassuming. You probably wouldn't even notice he was in the room. He had this kind of dry sense of humor. And he was just an old soul to me. He would bring friends home that didn't have anything to eat at their moms'. I remember buying him and his brother their winter coats. I said, where's that coat I brought you? And he said, I had to give it to my buddy cause he didn't have a coat mom. And we can get a coat. And so he was that. He just had this beautiful heart. I cannot describe his heart. It was so beautiful. “He just had this beautiful heart. I cannot describe his heart. It was so beautiful.” Mario was the one that, he was going to make life right for me. That was his thing. I always think we had in common, he was the youngest. I was the youngest. I think a lot of times he went under the radar, like I did. I was responsible for a lot of things, being the youngest. And I worried a lot more than my other siblings about my mother. Mario was like that for me. He never forgot Mother's Day cards. Those things. I can say Mario was my ride or die. He really was. His issues were no different than anybody else's issues. And I had taught him how to drive. And every time he accomplished something, his first bank card and how to use the ATM and how to deposit, all these things, I saw him believe more in himself. And I remember saying, you're going to have some down days, but we're going to get right back up. And as long as we're together, we're good. And I remember telling Mario one time, I said, laugh out loud more because he hardly would laugh. He had this kind of nervous, goofy laugh. I hear it in my head, and I realize I was saying it more for me than him. The way he would always just say, Mom, Mom, Mom, always needed something. Mom, mom. I miss that. I miss that. He just got a raw deal that day. It was so, so wrong what they did to Mario. He was a little, I think that day I didn't read much into, he might've been a little, a lot depressed. He did give me a call. And he was a little bit, I don't know, a little bit down about seeing the parole officer. And I was a little bit firm with him, like just call the parole officer and do it, and then I'll see you tonight. And kind of hung up abruptly. And so as the day goes by, I see a friend Kelvin Brooks who lived in our community. And we're friends on Facebook. And he posts something, does anyone know about the man that was just killed in the Bayview? And then Kelvin has this image posted. And I know his walk, pigeon-toed. And I quickly shut it off. And I call my niece. I said, I'm gonna send you this Facebook page image. I want you to tell me, is that Mario in that image? (whispers) And it was Mar. She was like, that's my cousin. And, you know, you don't want to admit it subconsciously. You can't accept that. But I knew his little walk. And I think from that day I've been trying to put it all back together, trying to make sense of it. I can't. I can't. And our life is now forever changed. When I think about the pain, I remember carrying Mario. I remember the labor pains. And I remember the sound of his heartbeat and him swimming in the sack and on that machine. And it seems like the pain comes in like that. With the labor, it starts up and it like goes up and up. And you can just see it. And you have to ride it out. I do say, I'd rather stay angry and mad because that keeps you in the fight of it. To me, it keeps you alive. The grief takes you out. You can't move on it. You can't function. You're dormant with it. And now I'm starting to finally maybe grieve this. And it's horrible, you know, because there's so many triggers with it, that comes with it. For us, as parents that lost our loved ones to police state, policing brutality, and to see it videotaped because it's ever going to be an image scarred in your mind, you can never shake it. But you see your child. You just triggered. You're back there. I'm back in 2015. It's December 2nd, 4:44 PM when this happened to Mar. And so you're in that moment. And as a mother, I think it's all I can do for him. It's like when they're little, the things you do, tuck them in, all these things you do, brush their little hair. All I can do for him now is tell everybody who he was. ______ This story is part of the series TAKEN FROM US: Remembering lives lost to police violence. This piece was reported and produced by Lucy Kang. First aired on UpFront on July 22, 2020.     The post “He just had this beautiful heart”: Remembering Mario Woods appeared first on KPFA.

Hosted by Antonio Santos, Debra Ruh and Neil MillikenChris Grant is AbilityNet's Area Coordinator in Scotland, or “King of Scotland” as he is affectionately known by the central team. Since starting in May 2018, he has completely transformed their free services in Scotland, generating huge growth in the number of volunteers and the hours of free tech support provided to older people and people with disabilities.  He has recruited and now manages a team of 25 volunteers who provide telephone, remote and in-person IT support to older people and people with disabilities, with another 25 volunteers in the pipeline.  They fix IT problems, give impartial advice and adapt equipment to suit the clients' individual needs.  Alongside this, Chris motivates and supports his volunteer team offering regular meetups, training and one-to-one support & coaching.  In Scotland, he is a networking champion, contacting like-minded organisations and charities to spread the word of their free services and increase their impact.  There is not a day goes by that he is not making contact with a volunteer, potential volunteer, client, local organisation, or anyone else he can get his hands on (!) to grow the AbilityNet service in Scotland.  All this is despite long term health issues that mean he is in constant pain and discomfort.  He's energetic, reliable and truly committed. Before Chris joined there were just 6 volunteers in the whole of Scotland. Within just one year, Chris had recruited 25 new volunteers and there are now 50 volunteers in his team..  He has interviewed each of these potential candidates, and communicated with them throughout the process so they feel part of a team before they are even actively making visits. He has also set up eight training sessions in Scotland, inviting experts from other organisations or running it himself, covering topics such as Facebook security, Dolphin, Apple software, etc. He instigated and organised their first-ever Scottish volunteer event. Collaborating with RNIB, he set up the day and organised for volunteers and local charities to attend and take part.He has helped numerous clients. He personally calls every new client to introduce himself, reassure them, and have a good long chat about their IT issues and anything else that's on their mind. Chris' persistence, endless energy and commitment is special.“In recent years, the Scottish volunteer community had become quite dormant, with very few calls coming through. Chris breathed new life into the area, putting an immense amount of energy into working with the existing volunteer group, finding new volunteers and looking at ways to publicise the service so that we find clients who need our services. He's pretty much the non-stop human dynamo in this regard! He also carefully finds the right balance between providing a professional service to our clients on the one hand and awareness that the people providing the service are volunteers with many other demands on their time on the other. This is a real skill – to get the best response possible from a volunteer workforce, while keeping everyone feeling that they are making a valuable contribution.” Simon Flower, AbilityNet volunteer
