Missouri's Children's Division is on the verge of a major overhaul. Workers who look into alleged child abuse and neglect will transition into more specialized roles on Sept. 1 with the goal of reducing a traditionally high caseload. But the workload for investigators has risen, sparking concern among some who work for the agency. Nationally, 1 in 7 children is abused before their 18th birthday, and there are over 19,000 reports of child abuse and neglect annually in Cuyahoga County alone. To help address these issues, Canopy Child Advocacy Center (CAC) opened its doors in Cuyahoga County in 2018. It was the last urban county in the country to establish a CAC, a national model for helping children and families affected by abuse and neglect.rnrnBefore the CAC, and in communities without a CAC, an abused child would have to tell their story an average of nine times to receive the services and support necessary to begin the healing process. And some abused and neglected children do not receive services at all. The innovative CAC model reduces potential trauma for children and families impacted by child abuse by having clients come to one child-friendly, trauma-informed location when they receive services and resources to begin the healing process. A federal police investigation into a Sydney childcare worker who allegedly abused 136 children has expanded to a remote Indigenous community in South Australia. Hamish Tait is facing 329 charges related to the alleged abuse of the children over a 16-year period. Australian correspondent Murray Olds says police have released additional material related to the case in order to encourage more impacted families to come forward. A new national study has found that artificial intelligence (AI) escalates the amount of online sexual exploitation against children. The research, a collaboration between the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children Australia and the Australian Federal Police's Centre to Counter Child Exploitation, found that at least one young person in every Year 12 classroom has experienced or known someone who has experienced AI-facilitated sexual abuse. Associate Professor Tim Cubitt from Adelaide University, an author of the study, tells SBS reporter Wing Kuang that AI is not only escalating sexual child abuse online, it's also become a safehaven that many children who experienced sexual exploitation turn to for help.

Are the limits of what can be said – the field of the non-verbal, the texture of affects, everything that resists symbolic capture – the true challenge facing psychoanalysis today? In her thought-provoking podcast, “The Body as a Pulsing Frontier”, Ema Ponce de León offers her particular view on the theme of the body in psychoanalysis, developed through her dialogue with Freud and with contemporary authors. Among other ideas, she suggests that the analyst not only listens but also “resonates bodily” feeling in their own body the patient's pre-verbal elements, especially with those with limited capacity for symbolization or with severe trauma. From this perspective, Ema Ponce proposes an embodied metapsychology in which the body is the fundamental support and grounding of the psyche, which is born out of the original body-to-body encounter, within a constitutive intercorporeality. In this embodied metapsychology, the author highlights concepts such as the tonic dialogue and introduces others such as tonic-emotional mirroring. Ema Ponce de León is a psychoanalyst working with children, adolescents, adults, and couples. She holds a PhD from the Complutense University of Madrid. She is a Training and Supervising Analyst (Titular Member with teaching functions) of the Uruguayan Psychoanalytic Association. She currently serves as Chair of the IPA Inter-Committee on Child Abuse and as the Uruguayan liaison to COWAP (Committee on Women and Psychoanalysis). The murder of a child in south-west France has caused outcry after it emerged that the chief suspect was previously accused of raping and sexual assaulting other children – but had never been charged, or even interviewed by police. Child welfare advocates and feminist groups have started weekly demonstrations outside the Justice Ministry, demanding stronger action against systemic failures to investigate, prosecute and convict child abusers. Steffy Alexandrian and Arnaud Gallais, who both founded child protection groups after being sexually abused, describe their experiences with the justice system and why an overhaul is long overdue. There's a moment in a pediatrician's day that doesn't show up on the schedule. It's the bruise that doesn't quite match the story, or the awkward pause after a parent answers a question just a little too quickly or the child who won't make eye contact or let go of your sleeve. In these moments, pediatricians become more than clinicians. They become interpreters, advocates and sometimes the only line of protection. To help us understand the latest on child abuse, we are joined by Denise Abdoo, PhD, CPNP. Dr. Abdoo is a pediatric nurse practitioner who specializes in child abuse and neglect. She is also an associate professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. It's not a delusion or a bad parenting moment — it's calculated, premeditated, and persistent abuse that can include unnecessary surgeries, poisoning, and starvation.Social media has supercharged this abuse by giving perpetrators an unlimited audience for sympathy, an online playbook for faking illnesses, and access to rare disease communities they can infiltrate. Support groups, GoFundMe campaigns, and medical blogs become tools for manipulation — turning the attention economy into a weapon against children.The system meant to protect kids often fails them — there's no official designation for Munchausen by proxy in most states, CPS may miscategorize it as "medical neglect," and perpetrators routinely cross state lines to dodge investigations.
