The film had an incredible message with nods to (gently) exposing satanic ritual abuse and organized child abuse and was a fantastic depiction of the realities of child trafficking and hidden networks of crime syndicates that operate under our noses targeting children and using them as commodities. Compared to many films showcasing similar topics, "A Child's Voice" was (and is) a minimally graphic film with an overly accurate portrayal of child abuse crimes. The censorship on Amazon was an abomination and slap in the face for such a carefully crafted independent film advocating for the rights of children. John took to Instagram Live to vent about this censorship but instead began a conversation about the topic of his film existing all over the world in secret - hiding in every corner of society. His unplanned and unscripted speech went viral instantly and became a moment of awakening to so many listening on the other side of the screen. Survivors were given a voice and listeners had a veil lifted from over their eyes. John's words were moving - exposing darkness enveloped in the love and compassion he brings to every conversation. Raw, vulnerable, true and worded in a way only John Paul Rice could do. The Independent Children's Monitor says it's clear our child protection system is under immense stress. Its review shows carers killed 24 children between December 2021 and June 2025. It finds no improvement, despite recommendations in a review of the murder of five-year-old Malachi Subecz in 2021. Children's Monitor CEO Arran Jones told Mike Hosking that while there are deep-seated issues that go beyond what the agencies can respond to, there are certainly things that can be improved. He says the lack of progress up to this point is an issue of prioritisation, and it's about making sure the problem is front of mine not only for Oranga Tamariki, but for all the agencies that have a role to play. Malachi Rain Subecz was 5 years old when he was murdered by his caregiver, Michaela Barriball, who is now serving a life sentence with a minimum non-parole period of 17 years. Coroner Janet Anderson has now made several recommendations including the development and implementation of an awareness campaign to encourage the identification and reporting of suspected child abuse. Safeguarding Children CEO Willow Duffy told Heather du Plessis-Allan, "I think a very well designed public health campaign would be excellent, but it cannot just be done on its own. Tell you what—I'm not feeling terribly hopeful about the situation for vulnerable kids in this country after reading the coroner's recommendations following the death of Malachi Subecz. You'll remember the case of Malachi. I'm not going to go through the details again; sufficient to say it happened about four and a half, nearly five years ago, and it fired up public anger because of the number of times his wider family tried to warn authorities that something was going to happen—and yet he was not protected. One of the recommendations the coroner has made today in her report is that Oranga Tamariki—OT, formerly CYFS—run a public awareness campaign to help people identify possible signs of abuse and understand how to take action. To be fair to her, that idea isn't new. It came from an earlier review. She's simply pointing out that it still hasn't happened, and is reiterating that the campaign should go ahead. But really? Is that what we need in this country—a public campaign to tell us what child abuse looks like? I think we all know what child abuse looks like. I struggle to believe that there are people who do not know that breaking a child's bone is abuse. So isn't this just the kind of thing well-meaning people suggest to make themselves feel like they're doing something, when really it changes nothing—because maybe there's very little you actually can do? The problem in Malachi's case wasn't that people didn't know what child abuse looked like. People did see the abuse. They absolutely recognised it as abuse. And they went to OT and said, “Hey, Malachi is being abused. Here's the proof.” By my count, they did that about five times—if not more. And OT didn't stop it. That is the problem. And it's the problem in so many of these tragic cases. When a child dies, we often discover afterwards that OT already knew the family—and yet the child ended up dead anyway. The problem isn't that you and I don't know what child abuse looks like. We do. The problem is that the agency responsible for stopping it apparently doesn't know what child abuse looks like—or at least doesn't act when it sees it. Never mind a public campaign. The brutal death of that poor wee boy Malachi is a disgrace. It's heartbreaking to think an adult could be so cruel to young child. Malachi was beaten, starved, thrown against walls... you name it. Basically torture. Now we have these debates popping up about it. Should the Minister front for interviews? Karen Chhour, herself a product of the foster care system, was criticised yesterday for attending a pre-planned lunch event to eat some lamb on Parliament's lawn. She should have, according to the RNZ story, presumably been inside answering questions about why more wasn't being done about this boy's murder, which you might recall was back in 2021. Kelvin Davis, you may also recall, came in for a hammering from the media when was Minister. So, I think we should all be really clear, neither Karen nor Kelvin nor any politicians are responsible for the deaths of babies. The fact there is no culprit for the death of Baby Ru in the Hutt is, you could say, the fault of the Police. But ultimately, as with all these cases, fault ultimately lies with those who do the killing, and those who do the covering up. You know, the family who won't speak to Police. The partner who won't do in their other half. They're the real culprits here. Yes, there are things we can learn. Things we can do. Things we change. We can change the name of the agency. We can add a red-flag system. We can appoint a Children's Commissioner. But ultimately none of it does much good, does it? We average around 10 or 11 kids killed by homicide ever year. Ask OT, or CYFs before them, and they'll tell reports of abuse seem to be trending down, but they have a new thing called reports of concern which are going up. We actually don't know if it's getting better or worse because of there's a data lag - I know, incredible. But you'd have to say, on the whole, the picture's not rosy, and no amount of stalking MPs around Parliament is going to fix it. Emmy winning actor and director Timothy Busfield is facing serious criminal charges in New Mexico following allegations involving two child actors he worked with on the Fox series The Cleaning Lady. Prosecutors have charged Busfield with two counts of criminal sexual misconduct against a minor and one count of child abuse. He has denied all allegations and maintains his innocence.According to court documents, investigators allege Busfield encouraged the twins to call him Uncle Tim, gave them gifts, and spent time with their family outside of filming. Prosecutors say he used moments of confusion on set to isolate the boys. One child reportedly disclosed that inappropriate contact began when he was seven years old, describing incidents that allegedly occurred on a bedroom set after filming paused. The second twin reported similar discomfort but said he did not speak up at the time.Authorities cite therapy notes, medical evaluations, behavioral changes, and witness statements as part of the evidence supporting the charges. Prosecutors have also referenced prior allegations spanning decades, though none previously resulted in criminal convictions.Busfield surrendered to authorities in January 2026 and was ordered held without bail. His defense team says the accusations are retaliatory after the children were written out of the show and claims he passed an independent polygraph test.As the case moves forward, the court will decide whether the evidence supports the charges. Until then, the allegations remain unproven, and the outcome could have major implications for accountability and child safety in the entertainment industry.

On March 15, 2024, a Piedmont, Oklahoma police officer responded to a routine runaway report that would uncover one of the most disturbing child abuse cases in recent Oklahoma history.The officer found a 14-year-old girl hiding under a blanket, weighing approximately 60 pounds—the size of a first grader. Her skin hung from her bones, and her eyes carried a fear that went far beyond a typical runaway. She had fled from her foster mother, 43-year-old Tina Marie Ramirez, and she was terrified to go back.What the officer discovered inside the Ramirez home shocked even veteran investigators. Every cabinet was padlocked. The refrigerator was locked. The pantry was locked. Surveillance cameras covered every room in the house. The children couldn't access food without permission—and permission was rarely granted.The officer found a taser that Tina had used as "discipline" on the malnourished children. He also discovered a handwritten letter from one of the children, addressed to God, its desperate words scrawled by a child who had lost hope that any human would help.This was the girl's seventh runaway attempt. For reasons that remain unclear, this time someone finally listened.Five foster children were immediately removed from the home and evaluated at OU Children's Hospital, where medical professionals described it as one of the worst malnutrition cases they had ever seen. The children were placed with their biological grandmother, Shelly Yates, who described them as "fragile and very thin" upon arrival.On March 28, 2024, Tina Marie Ramirez was charged in Canadian County District Court with four counts of child abuse by injury, two counts of child neglect, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Her husband, 26-year-old Anthony Ibeziako, was charged with two counts of child neglect and child abuse for failing to intervene. Both remain free while court proceedings continue.As of early 2026, the children are reportedly recovering with their grandmother—gaining weight, attending school, and slowly rebuilding their lives away from the locks, cameras, and fear.This episode features body camera footage, police interrogation recordings, and 911 dispatch audio. It's been more than a year since Gov. Mike Kehoe announced that state government veteran Jessica Bax would lead the Missouri Department of Social Services. It's arguably the most challenging state governmental department in Missouri that oversees Medicaid, benefits like SNAP and TANF and the state's Children Division. Bax joined “the Politically Speaking Hour on St. Louis on the Air” to talk about the big changes ahead for the state's Medicaid program – and a plan to help retain investigators looking into allegations of child abuse and neglect.

Ep. 79 As Child Abuse Detective Kristen King says in this episode, “If you haven't cried in child abuse, you probably haven't been there long enough or you're lying.” In the years I've interviewed law enforcement, officers have always said that incidents with kids are the hardest. I wanted to shine a light on those that handle these cases on a daily basis. Kristen has been with Dallas PD for 12 years. We review her career and talk about her not so predictable path to choosing law enforcement, some memorable calls from patrol and making the move to Child Abuse, something she said she knew she wanted to do during training. As she says, when it comes to crimes involving children – children are always going to be the victims, and she wants to help give them a voice. She cites the hard work of a multidisciplinary team of experts, agencies and organizations that make this possible. Kristen explains what constitutes child abuse, the calls she has responded to and the cases she has handled as well as the importance of weighing all the variables when determining if an incident was a crime, an accident, or just bad parenting. Kristen shares the emotional toll this work can take and why wellness matters — a topic that connects to Ep. 77 in which I interviewed her husband, Dallas Police Officer Joe King, head of the department's wellness unit and host of the podcast ATO: Bridging the Divide.A big part of Kristen's passion is educating families on various topics to keep their kids safe. For example, why teaching “Stranger Danger” falls short because most assaults on children are committed by someone known to the child. She talks about what parents should teach their kids and how to recognize warning signs.
