Ten child protection organisations have written an urgent letter to the home secretary expressing concern over the omission of child sexual abuse from the upcoming government strategy on violence against women and girls. A draft version of the strategy, due to be published in September, was leaked to Sky News's Mollie Malone, who first broke the story. She joins Nuala McGovern, along with Anna Edmundson from the NSPCC, one of the organisations that signed the letter.Miriam Robinson's debut novel And Notre Dame is Burning tells how Esther, a mother, tries to pick up the pieces of her life after a miscarriage - while her marriage falls apart. It is written in short bursts, in fragments of notes and letters. Miriam joins Nuala to talk about the female experience of losing a baby, betrayal, break-ups and moving on.It's a love story, Taylor just said yes! Pop superstar Taylor Swift is engaged to her American footballer boyfriend Travis Kelce. In photos, which have been liked more than 18 million times, the pair are surrounded by roses, delphiniums and hydrangeas. Taylor's love life has been the inspiration for a huge amount of her music, and the subject of tabloid speculation for years. What does this moment mean and how could it impact her music? Joining Nuala to discuss is freelance journalist and author Olivia Petter and Guardian Deputy Music Editor Laura Barton. With maternity services stretched across the UK, a new startup called Kove aims to address some of the problems in midwifery by providing a pay-as-you-go service at £180 per hour. But why are women opting for private care, and is it a good idea? Nuala talks to Kove co-founder Alakina Mann and NHS midwife and author Leah Hazard. In this explosive conversation, former School District teacher Laura Boulton reveals the disturbing pattern of institutional failure that she uncovered during her 23-year teaching career. What began as standard mandatory reporting of student disclosures about sexual assault evolved into something far more sinister—a suspected pedo ring within the district with connections potentially dating back to the 1980s.Boulton, an immigrant from Malaysia who built her American dream through education, shares how her commitment to student safety ultimately cost her the career she loved. After students reported sexual misconduct to her—both peer-to-peer incidents and staff-student violations—she discovered the district was systematically mishandling these reports, directing teachers to report only to administrators rather than law enforcement as legally required. The consequences for Bolton's advocacy were severe. Twice suspended and eventually forced to resign, she faced what she describes as the district's four-part strategy: "delay, deny, discredit, distract." Yet in a bewildering contradiction, the district paid her $400,000 in a settlement while simultaneously banning her from all district properties until 2027.Through her nonprofit Phoenix Advocacy, Boulton now helps families navigate similar situations, working with law enforcement and politicians to reform mandatory reporting protocols. Her message is clear: the safety of our children must transcend politics, institutional reputation, and personal career considerations. For parents, educators, and concerned citizens, this conversation serves as both a warning and a call to action. Send us a textReligious teachings wield profound influence over family dynamics and human behaviors, sometimes enabling abuse under the guise of spiritual teachings and guidance. This raw and revealing conversation confronts the troubling legacy of religious parenting methodologies that promote violence, rights removal, and coercive control rather than nurturing safe, consensual connection.Ruth shares her personal experience growing up under the influence of James Dobson's parenting teachings, exposing how these "Christian" parenting strategies actually originated from eugenicist theories of the 1930s. David and Ruth dissect how these methodologies create detailed systems for child abuse by advocating for escalating physical punishment, demeaning, demanding affection after violence, and treating children as inherently manipulative or "demonic." Most disturbing is how these approaches specifically target vulnerable children, with neurodivergent and LGBTQ+ youth suffering disproportionately under these regimes of violence and control. The conversation explores how religious justifications for violence extend beyond parenting into marital relationships, where men are positioned as divinely appointed authorities with the right to abuse and control women. This creates intergenerational patterns where violence becomes the primary coping tool for men and women for managing anxiety, fear, and situations where one feels out of control. David and Ruth challenge these distortions of faith, emphasizing that "coerced faith is not faith" and that true spirituality requires free will and personal dignity. For professionals working with families, this episode highlights the importance of going beyond trauma-informed approaches to understand how religious values shape family dynamics and entitlement for coercion and abuse. For those currently practicing these methods because they believe them spiritually necessary, there's an invitation to question whether these approaches truly reflect deeper values and support healthy, long-term connections to partner, parent, and pastor or simply perpetuate trauma and harm.Join this eye-opening discussion on how we can recognize, resist, and heal from religiously justified abuse while creating healthier spiritual environments for ourselves and future generations. Kentucky has one of the highest rates of child abuse in the country—nearly double the national average. We're looking at the factors that contribute to abuse and neglect in our state, and what's being done on the ground to make a difference. We talk with Elea Fox, President and CEO of Family & Children's Place, about what abuse can look like, what to do if you suspect a child is being mistreated, and how our systems can better support kids and families to prevent abuse in the first place.

I want to talk about kids being bashed by their families. We've had a really bad run of it - I don't know if you've realized - in the last few weeks. As far as I can see, just in the last 8 weeks, we've had the toddler in the suitcase, and we've had the baby in the bin in Auckland. We've also had a 2-month-old go to hospital with serious injuries that happened today, we've had a 3-month-old taken to hospital in Wellington in June, and we've had a 6-month-old critically injured at a Foxton Beach house in July. And we've hardly talked about this. I mean, we've talked about the toddler in the suitcase yesterday, world media talked about it too because it is so bizarre, it's hard to ignore. We also talked about the baby in the bin, that got about a day's worth of coverage, again, because that was pretty out there - putting a baby in a bin. But everything else, almost no coverage. Now, do you know why that is? I mean, part of it is obviously that this is now not unusual anymore. We just bash our babies all the time in this country apparently - but also because you're not actually allowed to talk about it. I don't know if you realize this, but the moment that Oranga Tamariki, which is the new CYFS, uplifts a kid, the Family Court orders basically automatic blanket suppression on it. Which means the police can't say anything, it means OT itself can't say anything, it means the media can't say anything. So the news coverage just basically dies. We get: "baby's gone to hospital," and that's the end of it. No more coverage. It's actually only when the child dies that we can talk about it in detail because there is now no young person to protect anymore. Now, isn't that the opposite of what we want? I mean, I think this is doing our kids a disservice. I understand why we did this in the first place, why we put these suppression orders in - the idea was to protect the privacy of these young people. But what it is also doing is protecting the privacy of the thugs in their families who put them in hospital or in the suitcase or in the bin. And what it also means is that no one then talks about what's going on. We're not horrified by the detail because there is no detail, so we don't talk about it, including politicians - and they should be the ones pitching solutions. At the rate that we're bashing our kids, this should be an election issue every single election - but it's not because we hardly talk about it because of the rules. So surely the rules should change. Nick Bryant thinks so.  Nick Bryant's writing has recurrently focused on the plight of disadvantaged children in the United States. He's been published in numerous national journals, including the Journal of Professional Ethics, Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, Journal of Social Distress and Homelessness, Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved, and Journal of School Health. He co-authored America's Children: Triumph or Tragedy, addressing the medical and developmental problems of lower socioeconomic children in America. What happens when the only community you've ever known becomes your prison? When sacred teachings become weapons of control? Jo Lloyd Johnson takes us on a raw, unflinching journey through the hidden world of religious cults and the long path toward reclaiming personal autonomy.Growing up in what she eventually recognized as a cult environment, Jo experienced multiple layers of abuse – religious, spiritual, and sexual. Raised within a strict hierarchical structure where men held all power and women were expected to remain silent and submissive, Jo's childhood was shaped by what she calls "the umbrella of authority." Under this system, pastors claimed direct communication with God about their followers' lives, husbands controlled wives, and children had no voice at all.The damage of purity culture forms a central thread in Jo's story. As she powerfully explains, this toxic ideology taught her that her body was dangerous, that sexuality was shameful, and that women bear responsibility for men's thoughts and actions. For Jo, who experienced sexual assault at age six within the religious commune, these teachings were particularly devastating – leaving her wondering if she was already "tainted" before she could even understand what that meant.Jo's path to healing began with motherhood, when instinctive protection of her child sparked questions about her indoctrination. The real catalyst came when her husband was offered a position as a pastor – suddenly facing the reality of becoming what she had been "prophesied" to be, Jo realized she wanted something different for herself and her children. This awakening led her to examine her beliefs piece by piece, confront repressed memories, and ultimately forge her own path forward.Today, Jo channels her experiences into supporting other survivors through Louder Than Silence, an organization providing community and therapy for victims of sexual violence. Her story reminds us that healing isn't about forgetting – it's about transforming anger into constructive action and finding community that celebrates authenticity rather than demanding conformity.Listen and discover how sometimes, the most spiritual act is finding the courage to question everything you've been taught and create a new story – one where you belong not in a carefully tended garden, but in the wild, beautiful forest of your authentic self.

It's betrayal. Why is Trump suddenly acting like an Israeli ambassador? Why are American leaders more loyal to a foreign state than to their own people, and their own children?Justice delayed is justice denied, and we need to keep the pressure on until Trump becomes even more of a "panican" about this.No more Kash Patel. No more hiding behind “ongoing investigations.” No more delays. Fire Pam Bondi and whoever else is obstructing the truth.Epstein's victims deserve justice. And if Trump won't deliver it then, again, we will.—https://policecoffee.com/collections/coffee

Today we're talking about what no one else will: The Trump administration has failed to release the Epstein client list — and that's not just a mistake, it's a betrayal. The powerful pedophiles of this world are being shielded, protected, and enabled while children are trafficked and raped. This is what happens when kings fear exposure more than they fear God.We're connecting the dots: Epstein wasn't just a creep with an island — he was part of a global blackmail machine. And it's time we ask why a man with a Jewish surname, operating with international impunity, ended up so close to the Mossad, Israeli intelligence, and foreign interests. Why is Trump suddenly all-in on Israel and Netanyahu? Is it coincidence… or is this the whole game?If Trump is serious about justice, he needs to act like it. No more hiding behind Kash Patel. No more empty speeches while Pam Bondi sits on a “truckload” of Epstein files. Fire them. Release the list. Send us a Positive Review!Series Title: In-depth Exploration of Patriarchy & its Correlation to Violence & Abuse [Part VIII of X]Join Val & Nathan as they respectfully lean into specific risk factors associated with formalized patriarchal religious institutions (including the LDS church) & how these vulnerabilities play out in very real ways.  They also explore how our children can eventually become safer as their caregivers become educated & reach a critical mass of light & knowledge about the harmful (even if unintended) consequences to many children raised within patriarchal homes & churches. **Please note, Val & Nathan are not implying that child abuse & violence are *inevitable* when their families and churches are patriarchal. They are simply unpacking all of the heavily researched data pointing to heightened risk factors associated with patriarchy and violence/abuse. Please, let us learn from the ample data & protect our children.Referenced in this Episode: Associated Press: Seven years of sex abuse: How Mormon officials let it happenSupport the showListen, Share, Rate & Review EPISODES Friday Episodes Annual Subscription $89 Friday Episodes Monthly Subscription $10 Valerie's Support & Processing Groups Donate: Venmo or Patreon Visit our Website
