Childhood trauma, often referred to as ‘complex' or ‘developmental' trauma, is extremely common but is not often discussed in the context of our work as early childhood educators. And yet, children are showing up to our settings/programs every day carrying the weight of these circumstances and, according to research, a trajectory of negative health outcomes for the lifespan as a result. For 30 years disgraced former Irish swim coach George Gibney (77) has avoided child abuse allegations, relocating around the United States and refusing to answer questions about his past. On Tuesday he was detained by US marshals on foot of the extradition request, and Gibney now sits in a Florida jail as officials attempt to extradite him to Ireland to face 79 charges of sexual offences against four young girls between 1971 and 1981. When abusers wield the controversial theory of parental alienation syndrome as a weapon, protective parents often find themselves losing custody to the very people they're trying to escape.Ruth Guerreiro, Chief Clinical Officer of Genesis Women's Shelter & Support, pulls back the curtain on this troubling dynamic, explaining how a scientifically disputed theory from the 1980s continues to influence family court decisions with devastating consequences. We explore how protective behaviors—teaching children to recognize danger, set boundaries, and seek help—are frequently mischaracterized as attempts to "alienate" children from an abusive parent.The stakes couldn't be higher. This week, France in Focus explores the "Bétharram scandal", named after the Catholic school in southwestern France where hundreds of pupils were subjected to physical, psychological and sexual abuse for decades. The perpetrators of these crimes were never brought to justice, despite complaints lodged as early as the 1990s. Our colleagues at franceinfo investigate. Today, the vast majority of the cases are ineligible for prosecution due to the statute of limitations. But victims are still demanding accountability, notably from current Prime Minister François Bayrou, who was education minister at the time and a high-ranking local figure.  A French parliamentary commission was appointed in March and the findings of its inquiry will be published shortly. When a 911 call came in about a 12-year-old girl who had been in an accident, first responders expected a routine emergency. In this episode, Niall asks a provocative question: Is shouting at your children a form of child abuse?The debate was sparked by a top psychologist who claimed that shouting at children — or even arguing loudly in front of them — can be just as damaging as physically slapping them. The expert warned that such behaviour can have long-lasting emotional and psychological effects, and even suggested it should be legally recognised as harmful.Is this an overreaction? Or are we only beginning to understand the impact of verbal and emotional discipline?Some callers strongly agreed, arguing that constant shouting creates fear, anxiety, and insecurity in children. They believe emotional abuse is often overlooked simply because it doesn't leave bruises, and that parenting should focus on calm, respectful communication.Others said the idea goes too far. Parenting is chaotic, stressful, and imperfect — and sometimes raising your voice is the only way to get a message across. She is also the Director the Family Impact Seminars in New Jersey which provides state policymakers with nonpartisan, solution-oriented research on family issues. Dr. Monagas serves on several statewide Boards, including the New Jersey Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect and the Child Advocacy Center-Multidisciplinary Team Advisory Board. Dr. Monagas previously conducted psychological evaluations and treatment for children and families involved with Child Protective Services. She completed her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Rutgers University Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology.  She also has a Master of Arts in Educational Psychology and a Post-Bachelor's Certificate in Child Advocacy from Montclair State University. Maria Isabella Pontoriero (“MIP”), LMSW, MPH, is a licensed social worker and forensic interviewer. MIP is Program Manager at the New Jersey Children's Alliance, managing New Jersey's statewide coordinated response to youth who are impacted by and/or initiate problematic sexual behaviors. MIP is also Founder and Consultant for Enhanced Choice Training & Consulting LLC, which provides specialized training, program development, and case consultation services to individuals and agencies who serve victims of crime and exploitation. In addition, MIP provides training and peer review feedback as a consultant on an as-needed basis for Modell Consulting Group and RADAR Child Forensic Interview Models. She previously served as Lead Social Worker for the New Orleans Children's Advocacy Center & Audrey Hepburn CARE Center at Children's Hospital New Orleans. There, she supervised the full-time and contract forensic interviewing staff and coordinated a child trafficking survivor services team called BRAVE (Building Resilience for All Victims of Exploitation). In partnership with the New Orleans Police Department, MIP developed Louisiana's first proactive recovery planning team that provided rapid recovery and advocacy response to missing and exploited youth who have left home. If you are concerned about these findings please send a report on https://tips.fbi.gov Subject: Complaint Regarding Buffalo Public Schools – Alleged Failure to Report Abuse and Obstruction of Investigations Dear FBI Buffalo Field Office, I am writing to formally submit a complaint concerning serious allegations of misconduct within the Buffalo Public Schools (BPS) system, specifically regarding the failure to report incidents of child abuse, sexual assault, and attempted abductions, as well as alleged obstruction of law enforcement investigations. These concerns have been brought to public attention through recent statements by Buffalo Police Detective Richard Hy and related media reports. Nature of the Issue: I am concerned about reports that BPS officials have intentionally failed to report incidents of child abuse, sexual assault, and attempted abductions involving students, as required by New York State law for mandated reporters. Additionally, there are allegations that BPS employees and legal representatives have obstructed police investigations by ignoring subpoenas, deleting evidence, and instructing staff not to cooperate with law enforcement. Specific Incidents The February 2025 incident at Dr. Charles R. Drew Science Magnet School involving an attempted abduction, where the school allegedly failed to notify parents and deleted video evidence. There are also several cases where a students reported abuse to counselors who failed to report it, leading to delayed intervention Impact: These alleged actions undermine the safety of students in BPS, violate mandatory reporting laws, and erode public trust in both the school district and law enforcement's ability to protect vulnerable children. I respectfully request that the FBI investigate these allegations to determine whether federal or state laws have been violated, including potential civil rights violations, obstruction of justice, or failure to comply with mandatory reporting requirements. I urge a thorough review of BPS's practices, including their handling of incident reports, compliance with subpoenas, and interactions with law enforcement. If warranted, I request that appropriate actions be taken to hold responsible parties accountable and ensure the safety of students. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I trust that the FBI will handle this complaint with the seriousness it demands to protect the children of Buffalo Public Schools.
