Today's episode kicks off a four-week series Michelle recorded before heading to Morocco—so your feed stays nourished while she's away. She starts by naming a trap many of us fell into this month: believing that if we just grit our teeth and push harder, everything will fall into place. That belief is intoxicating because it promises control, but in practice it leaves us exhausted, irritable, and convinced the problem is our character—rather than our capacity. We zoom out to the bigger picture: how diet culture, fitness culture, and hustle culture all glorify discipline. Michelle shares how this showed up for her (from “no eating after 7 p.m.” to six-day workout rules) and how the inevitable pendulum swing—restriction, then rebellion—fed shame and eroded confidence beyond food into work, relationships, and daily life. From there, she breaks down the science in plain language. Willpower functions like a battery: decisions, stress, and energy output drain it across the day, which is why 9 p.m. cookies feel harder to navigate than 9 a.m. ones. More importantly, when your nervous system is in survival mode (hello, big emotions, illness, or an ER shift full of high-stakes calls), your “chimp brain” is focused on keeping you alive, not on helping you stick to a plan. Trying to muscle through from that state isn't a character flaw—it's biology working exactly as designed. The middle of the episode gets wonderfully practical. Michelle contrasts rigid rules with living rhythms—sleep, meals, movement—that bend without breaking. She shares how choosing “audio only” last week (skipping the usual YouTube/blog/Substack blitz) honoured her capacity and kept the podcast streak alive. You'll also hear how she and Rob set up systems and a supportive environment (like regular fridge/pantry resets) so the path of least resistance becomes the nourishing one.We close with five shifts to try this week, framed as invitations rather than prescriptions: meet yourself with compassionate curiosity (“What's making this hard right now?”), tend your nervous system before you task-master yourself, build flexible rhythms instead of brittle rules, let your environment do the heavy lifting, and practise self-trust—listening in and responding—so behaviour change feels collaborative, not combative. In this episode, you'll learn:Why “just try harder” is a broken strategy for long-term change, even when it briefly “works.”How decision fatigue and stress physiology deplete willpower across the day.Why your brain prioritizes safety over discipline when you're overwhelmed—and how to work with that, not against it.The difference between rules and rhythms, and how rhythms reduce all-or-nothing thinking.Five concrete ways to replace willpower with trust-based support.Series roadmap (what's coming next):Part 2 (Ep. 223): The Myth of Food Addiction — a science-grounded rethink of why certain foods feel so charged.Part 3 (Ep. 224): The Myth that Thin = Healthy — what the evidence actually shows, and how stigma harms health.Part 4 (Ep. 225): The Myth of Control — why gripping tighter creates rebellion, and what trust makes possible.Links & resources mentioned:Michelle references her “chimp brain” shorthand for the survival-focused part of the brain and the idea of willpower as a finite battery—both used here as accessible metaphors to explain stress physiology and decision fatigue.Programs & support from Michelle: Nourish Yourself: Body+MindEnjoying the show?If this episode helped you rethink willpower, follow/subscribe so you don't miss the rest of the series. Welcome to Real Food Recovery, a podcast created by two lifelong processed food addicts with over 100 years of addiction (and recovery) between them. Paige Alexander and Jamie Morgan Reno use their Real Food Recovery podcast and social media channels to share their struggles, lessons learned, tools, tips, and resources that freed them from decades of food addiction, obsession, and loss. Braci Dutton is a wife, mother, and wellness educator who hit rock bottom with food addiction before finding lasting healing through clean living. For years, she felt trapped in cycles of bingeing, exhaustion, and shame—parenting from the couch and wondering why she couldn't “just have more willpower.” But everything changed when she became a mom and realized something deeper was going on. That's when she uncovered the truth: the food industry was designed to keep her addicted. Instead of staying stuck, Braci took her power back. She learned how to read labels, detoxed her pantry and her home, and began rebuilding her health from the inside out. Today, she's dedicated her life and career to helping other women do the same—through food, beauty, and lifestyle education rooted in truth, simplicity, and freedom. She believes women deserve to feel good again, not just in their bodies, but in their motherhood, their minds, and their everyday lives. In every Real Food Recovery episode, Paige and Jamie take time to answer viewer questions about processed food addiction, obsession, and recovery, be sure to submit yours on their YouTube Channel or Facebook Page. In this episode of the Food Junkies Podcast, Dr. Vera Tarman speaks with Bonnie Newlin, registered dietitian nutritionist, Certified LEAP Therapist, founder of Crave Nourishment, and member of the Lipedema Education Group. Bonnie specializes in the nutritional management of lipedema and chronic inflammation. Lipedema is a progressive adipose and connective tissue disorder that primarily impacts women, often misdiagnosed as obesity. Bonnie shares her own story of living with lipedema—including a 170-pound weight loss, delayed diagnosis, and eventual lipidema reduction surgery—and how food addiction and weight cycling complicate early recognition of the condition. Together, Dr. Tarman and Bonnie explore: What lipedema is and how it differs from obesity and lymphedema Early signs, symptoms, and barriers to diagnosis The role of hormonal changes in progression Why ultra-processed foods and sodium worsen lipedema symptoms The connection between lipedema, food addiction, and binge/restrict cycles How anti-inflammatory nutrition and lifestyle strategies can reduce pain, swelling, and disease progression Emerging treatments, including compression therapy, lymphatic drainage, vibration therapy, and lipedema reduction surgery Myths about lipedema and why it's often misunderstood in medical settings Bonnie's vision for DNA-guided nutrition research to better serve this population This episode sheds light on a condition that may affect up to 11% of women yet remains underdiagnosed and misunderstood. If you or someone you know struggles with chronic swelling, painful fat, or unexplained weight changes—especially alongside food addiction—this conversation offers clarity, compassion, and hope.

Breaking Food Addiction and Overeating Why Abstinence Beats Moderation with Joel Fuhrman, MD by Chef AJ
Is food addiction a mental illness? Should ultra-processed foods rich in sugar and refined carbohydrates be classified alongside alcohol, nicotine, and other addictive substances linked to substance use disorders?Food addiction (especially to processed, packaged, carb-heavy foods) is real, widespread, and often misunderstood by both the public and healthcare professionals.Dr. Bret Scher and Dr. Georgia Ede sit down with Dr. Jen Unwin, a psychologist with over 30 years of NHS experience, to explore the science, diagnostic challenges, and recovery strategies for ultra-processed food addiction. In this interview, you'll learn:Why food addiction isn't yet formally recognized as a substance use disorderHow food addiction differs from emotional or disordered eatingBiological mechanisms driving addictive patterns, such as dopamine spikes from refined carbohydratesThe six WHO criteria for substance use disorder and how they apply to foodThe role of ketogenic and low-carb diets in recovery from food addictionThe influence of artificial sweetenersThe importance of defining the addictive substances involvedYou'll hear practical strategies for treatment, including abstinence-based approaches, personalized dietary plans, group support, and brain-retraining education. The conversation also explores the rise of GLP-1 medications—where they can help, where they fall short, and how they compare to dietary interventions in addressing root causes. If you or your patients struggle with cravings, cycles of relapse, or feelings of helplessness around food, this discussion offers hope, clarity, and actionable next steps toward lasting recovery.Expert Featured:Dr. Jen Unwinhttps://x.com/drjenunwinwww.the-chc.orgDr. Georgia Ede@GeorgiaEdeMDResources Mentioned:The International Food Addiction Conferencewww.the-chc.org/fas/conferenceDr. Unwin's Bookhttps://www.amazon.com/Fork-Road-Hopeful-Guide-Freedom-ebook/dp/B08XZL1LLJ/CME's Mentioned:Managing Major Mental Illness with Dietary Change: The New Science of Hopehttps://www.mycme.com/courses/managing-major-mental-illness-with-dietary-change-9616Brain Energy: The Metabolic Theory of Mental Illnesshttps://www.mycme.com/courses/brain-energy-the-metabolic-theory-of-mental-illness-9615Follow our channel for more information and education from Bret Scher, MD, FACC, including interviews with leading experts in Metabolic Psychiatry.Learn more about metabolic psychiatry and find helpful resources at https://metabolicmind.org/About us:Metabolic Mind is a non-profit initiative of Baszucki Group working to transform the study and treatment of mental disorders by exploring the connection between...

Send us a textComfort is slowly killing us, but we don't even recognize it as an addiction. What happens when society's most celebrated coping mechanisms become our greatest chains? In this transformative episode, I pull back the curtain on the socially acceptable addictions that hide in plain sight: food and alcohol. These aren't stereotypical addictions – they're the wine moms at PTA meetings, the neighbors hosting barbecues, the coworkers bringing donuts, all numbing themselves with substances we collectively celebrate. The neuroscience tells a clear story: food and alcohol hijack the same brain pathways, creating powerful dopamine loops that keep us coming back despite the consequences. I share my personal journey through these dependencies, revealing how childhood conditioning, identity attachment, and cultural pressure maintain our comfortable prison of numbing behaviors. The most dangerous lie? That moderation proves we're not addicted.Breaking free requires more than willpower – it demands replacing numbing habits with regulation practices and confronting the emotions we're desperately avoiding: shame, loneliness, rejection, and boredom. My two months on the carnivore diet after years of sobriety have shown me what clarity and presence truly feel like, but the path wasn't easy. When you change, expect resistance from everyone comfortable with your former self. The ultimate goal isn't just avoiding substances but creating a life so fulfilling you don't need to escape from it. Take one step today – whether that's seeking community support, establishing accountability, or simply choosing presence over numbness. Subscribe to join me on this journey toward authentic living, and remember: there's nothing more powerful than building a life worth staying present for. In this riveting conversation, Dr. Stephen Riggs shares his remarkable journey from conventional primary care physician to pioneering metabolic health specialist. After 30 years of traditional practice, everything changed when his wife handed him "The Obesity Code" by Dr. Jason Fung. Initially skeptical, Dr. Riggs tested the low-carb approach with his patients and witnessed transformations that defied his medical training: patients reversing type 2 diabetes, coming off insulin, and experiencing substantial weight loss in mere months.Dr. Riggs reveals how he built a comprehensive metabolic health clinic within a traditional healthcare system by meticulously tracking patient outcomes and demonstrating remarkable cost savings—over $550,000 annually in medication reductions from just 220 patients. He discusses his "Low Carb Bootcamp" program that achieves a 73% diabetes reversal rate and how his team approach incorporates health coaches, nutritionists, and food addiction specialists.Perhaps most fascinating is Dr. Riggs' observation that 95% of patients with food addiction see their addiction resolved within 8-12 weeks on a ketogenic diet—without specific addiction counseling. He offers practical insights on protein requirements, implementing lifestyle changes in America's heartland, and navigating resistance from colleagues and insurance companies. This conversation offers a powerful glimpse into how evidence-based nutritional interventions are quietly revolutionizing healthcare from within the system, bringing joy back to medicine by truly healing patients rather than merely managing their decline.BIG IDEA"Nutrition went from being basically irrelevant to me—I got almost zero nutritional training, what little I did was probably wrong—and now it's the biggest tool in my toolbox by far."Stephen Riggs, MD Contact InfoPersonal Website:www.livingbyDesignKetonutrition.com Metabolic Clinic Site:MercyOne.org/LivingbyDesign Send Dr. Ovadia a Text Message. Whether it's food addiction or something a little more complicated and why a distorted relationship with food can also show up in how you manage love and money...

America's obesity epidemic isn't an accident - it's a carefully orchestrated assault on your health designed to create lifelong customers for Big Food, Big Pharma, and the medical industrial complex. In this explosive investigation, we expose the shocking truth behind why two-thirds of Americans are now overweight or obese, and it has nothing to do with willpower or personal responsibility. This is biological warfare disguised as food, and you're the target.Prepare to be outraged as we reveal how food scientists have weaponized addiction by engineering hyper-palatable processed foods that hijack your brain's reward system more powerfully than cocaine. We'll expose the secret laboratory studies that proved these foods cause obesity, diabetes, and heart disease - studies that were buried by corporate executives who knew exactly what they were doing to the American people. From high fructose corn syrup that triggers unstoppable hunger to artificial additives that disrupt your hormones, from marketing campaigns that target children's developing brains to government nutrition guidelines written by food industry lobbyists - this is systematic poisoning for profit. But the conspiracy goes deeper than you could ever imagine. We'll reveal how pharmaceutical companies deliberately created the obesity crisis to sell you diabetes drugs, weight loss medications, and surgical procedures worth hundreds of billions annually. The same corporations making you fat are selling you the "cures" - and none of them actually work because that would destroy their business model. We'll expose the suppressed research on what really causes weight gain, the natural solutions they've criminalized, and the doctors who've been silenced for telling patients the truth. They don't want you thin, healthy, and energetic - they want you sick, dependent, and profitable. Your obesity isn't your fault - it's their business plan.

Have you ever felt addicted to ultra-processed foods---like you knew they were bad for you, but you couldn't stop indulging? This happened to our guest today who at age 15 weighed over 300 lbs. And she didn't know who she was anymore. Today, Penelope Popken is 19 and she's overcome her addictive behavior. During this revealing interview, mother and daughter discuss what led to Penelope's struggles with weight, the drugs she took, the (mostly unhelpful) therapists' recommendations and more. They go over how most weight loss drugs (including Ozempic) and other quick fixes (like gastric bypass surgeries) have dire consequences. And they cover what it took to turn things around for Penelope. By the way, her healing path included not just returning to real nourishing food but addressing dysfunctional family patterns that contributed to unhealthy behavior. Since both Helene and Penelope have had to overcome their individual struggles with unhealthy eating and obesity, they have started the Step it UP program to help other women in just their position. After failed attempts at diets, injections, and pills, they are on a mission to help everyone learn how to nourish themselves more deeply and to thrive.
