Mayor Karen Bass is the 43rd Mayor of Los Angeles, a dedicated public servant whose career has been defined by her relentless fight for social justice, equity, and community empowerment. Growing up in Los Angeles during the Civil Rights era, Bass was inspired from a young age to advocate for those without a voice. Before entering public office, she founded Community Coalition in 1990, responding to the crack cocaine epidemic and advocating for criminal justice reform. As mayor, Bass has made historic strides in reducing crime, addressing homelessness, and uniting Los Angeles under inclusive, compassionate leadership, all while confronting and overcoming national scrutiny and federal challenges with courage and clarity.  Takeaways Leadership Rooted in Justice: Mayor Bass's motivation has always been about fighting for justice and equity, shaped by her upbringing during the Civil Rights movement and personal experiences in Los Angeles. She leads with a focus on ensuring the city's wealth and opportunities are accessible to everyone. Action in Crisis and Unity: From declaring a state of emergency on homelessness her first day in office to calling out misinformation in the media, Mayor Bass leads decisively and transparently, uniting diverse communities and refusing to let past mistakes repeat themselves. Truth Over Media Narratives: Throughout heightened media scrutiny and federal intervention, Mayor Bass consistently prioritizes honest communication, directly addressing misconceptions and ensuring the people of Los Angeles—and beyond—hear the real story from their city's leader.  Sound Bites “We have so much wealth and opportunity in the city, and for a segment of the city to not be able to access that, it's the same problem of injustice in the world of plenty.” “It was most important that we address the crisis that was facing Los Angeles. …I declared the city to be in a state of emergency.” “You can do that now and it can be carried as news, whereas in the past it wouldn't even be carried because it was so absurd. So I think it's been very important that I constantly am out communicating what is real and essentially painting the picture of this is Los Angeles.” Connect & Discover Mayor Bass: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mayorofla/?hl=en Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MayorOfLA/ Website:https://mayor.lacity.gov/ YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@mayorofla

Desde a infância, o esporte sempre esteve presente. We bring you this week's episode from Los Angeles and New York City, as we prepare for tomorrow's performance of the OCTOBER 7 play at Bowdoin College in Maine. We traveled to Israel after that terrible day and interviewed survivors, the bereaved and the heroes who saved lives, and brought their testimony to the world in the form of a verbatim play.We are nervous, but excited. It's a dangerous time to bring the truth to College Campuses. And just at the weekend there were threats against a Bowdoin College vigil organised to honor Charlie Kirk. We are ramping up security for the play- we are taking every precaution to ensure the safety of attendees but the bad people who walk among us want to shut us up. They want to prevent you from hearing the truth. We are determined to bring the truth to Bowdoin and colleges across the US. It is the least we can do to honor Charlie Kirk after he was assassinated while doing God's work, bringing the truth to university campuses that preach wokeness and toxic, left-wing ideologies. We are heartbroken for his wife who has been left without a husband and their children who are now without a father. This week we talk about why Charlie Kirk was so effective and why his legacy will always continue, even in the face of danger. You can still come and support the OCTOBER 7 play at Bowdoin. If you know anyone in the area please send them the link below to register. It has been very disturbing to see the response of the many on the hateful left to Charlie's assasination. Particularly disturbing was the number of teachers and so-called educators who openly celebrated his death. We expose them all. It is shocking that they have influence on our children. Phelim also reveals why they are celebrating. He has seen it all before, growing up during the Northern Ireland troubles. You can read the truth about these people through the link below. And we tell you as journalists how to handle breaking news stories such as Charlie's murder - what to watch for and how to untangle the truth from the errors and lies. You can read Phelim's substack on the issue (linked below).  As we mentioned OCTOBER 7 the play is coming to Bowdoin College in Maine tomorrow. The play is verbatim with no editorializing and no spin, presented in an American university where Hamas-sympathizing radicals have been intimidating students who don't agree with them. Please register to attend the play at October7Bowdoin.com, or by clicking the link below. We have over 600 seats to fill up and look forward to seeing you at Pickard Theater at 7:30 pm, doors open at 7:00 pm. And please remember that we are a non-profit organization so please go to unreportedstorysociety.com and give what you can so that we can continue to bring our special projects like the play, and our weekly podcast, to you. Inside The Cecil Hotel: Dark Truths Behind Elisa Lam's Elevator Video On a February morning in 2013, guests at the infamous Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles complained of brown, foul-tasting water. What the maintenance team discovered on the rooftop would spark a global internet frenzy - the body of 21-year-old Elisa Lam inside the hotel's water tank. In the days leading up to her disappearance, Elisa was captured on the hotel’s elevator CCTV behaving erratically. The now-viral footage has since fuelled endless theories, speculation, and conspiracy. But for those who worked inside the walls of the Cecil, Elisa’s case wasn’t unusual. The hotel had a long, dark history of death, violence, murder and tragedy. This week on True Crime Conversations, host Claire Murphy speaks with the Cecil Hotel's former manager, Amy Price who lived through the sheer horror and chaos. From eerie theories to the realities of running a place with such a dark history, Amy shares what it was like inside the hotel when one of the internet's most enduring mysteries unfolded. The screenwriters Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn are cousins, and they grew up in the 1970s and '80s in a big Catholic extended family in St. Louis. The Gunns are an incredibly creative clan that has produced all sorts of actors and writers and directors, including Brian's brother James, who you might know as the director of the most recent “Superman” movie and the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise. Brian and Mark are both Jesuit educated twice over, alumni of St. Louis University High School and the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. It was during college that they started performing sketch comedy together, and they both moved to Los Angeles in the '90s to pursue Hollywood dreams. Since then, Brian and Mark have worked together on films and TV shows, including the family adventure movie “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and a 2019 superhero horror film called “Brightburn” featuring Elizabeth Banks. Their first project that made it big was a movie and series called “2gether,” which debuted on MTV in 2000. It was a hilarious parody of the boy band era of Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC and it was influential on the development of AMDG host Mike Jordan Laskey's sense of humor. The actors playing the boy band became an actual boy band themselves, opening for Britney Spears and hitting the Billboard charts with two different albums. If you are an elder millennial, all we have to say is, “I know my calculus,” and you'll sing back: “You plus me equals us.” Mike asked Brian and Mark about their family and their Jesuit education, how they work together as a writing team, and what it's like to work in the film industry. Mark and Brian also shared some creative tips they've learned in more than a quarter century in the trade. Finally, Mike couldn't let them go without reminiscing about “2gether” and marveling at the fact that 25 years after the movie's debut, the most popular film in the world right now is another movie about a fictional boy band. Though this new one is composed of demons and they're being hunted by a KPop girl group... Anyway, we think you'll enjoy this sneak peek into the lives of Hollywood screenwriters. www.jesuits.org/ www.beajesuit.org/ twitter.com/jesuitnews facebook.com/Jesuits instagram.com/wearethejesuits youtube.com/societyofjesus www.jesuitmedialab.org/

As President Trump announced that he will restore law and order in Memphis with the Memphis Safe Task Force, Tom Homan is with us today to describe what that looks like. As ICE agents get harassed in sanctuary cities like Chicago, Boston and Los Angeles as they arrest bad guys, President Trump and Tom Homan have a zero tolerance policy when t comes to violence against their agents. Memphis has a serious crime problem and state, local leaders and residents are welcoming the help from President Trump. This week's episode is all about documentary narration. Voiceover actor Paula Tiso joins me to share her journey from sketch comedy in Los Angeles to working steadily in promos, radio imaging, true crime, and documentary series. We talk about training, the shift from “perky” reads to grounded storytelling, and what it really takes to support a story with your voice. About Paula: Paula Tiso is a veteran voiceover actor whose work spans documentary narration, true crime, television affiliates, video games, and more. She's voiced Smithsonian Channel documentaries, Oxygen and ID series like Living with a Serial Killer and The Devil Speaks, and brought characters to life in games including Final Fantasy X, No More Heroes, and Fallout 76. Whether narrating history, guiding audiences through true crime, or connecting viewers to their local TV stations, Paula's voice combines warmth, authority, and authenticity.   From Comedy to Narration Paula started out in sketch comedy and found her way into voiceover through commercial training. She explains how those early skills built the foundation for narration work across genres. True Crime and Empathy Narrating true crime requires neutrality and steadiness. At the same time, it calls for empathy when addressing victims and families. Paula shares how she prepares for heavy scripts and keeps her delivery both clear and compassionate. Core Skills for Narrators Commercial training as a base for timing and clarity Adaptability when scripts change mid-session Authenticity in the read, not a “performance” Curiosity to keep learning and exploring new material Preparation that marks cues and supports clean delivery Types of Documentary Narration Nature: slow pacing, voice supports the picture History: sometimes includes character inserts, with age shifts in voice In-show and lifestyle: friendly and helpful Promos and affiliates: concise and reliable Building a Career Paula describes narration as building a career vine by vine, one connection leading to the next. She emphasizes curiosity, preparation, and adaptability as the keys to staying relevant. AI and the Future Paula also discusses how AI is impacting voiceover, and the work organizations like NAVA are doing to protect performers through transparency and consent. CSX CEO Joe Hinrichs challenges the long-standing obsession with operating ratios and pushes for volume growth, especially in high-potential areas like intermodal. He believes railroads can achieve both high profit margins and volume growth, emphasizing interline partnerships as a critical strategy to access new markets and improve service. Global trade winds are literally shifting freight patterns, with China drastically reducing its U.S. soybean imports due to trade tensions and retaliatory tariffs. This significant decrease in exports is creating a substantial drop in freight demand, particularly affecting Midwest states and potentially leading to job losses across trucking, rail, and port operations. High-stakes trade negotiations between the U.S. and South Korea, involving a proposed $350 billion South Korean investment fund aimed at underwriting U.S. shipbuilding, manufacturing, and other critical development. Despite reported stalls in discussions over foreign exchange markets and recent tensions, strategic commitments like Hanwha Group's $5 billion investment in a Philadelphia shipyard highlight re-industrialization efforts. At home, the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are showing positive trends, reporting improved truck and rail dwell times in August 2025. This reflects strong coordination between terminals, trucking partners, and railroads, ensuring supply chains remain reliable during peak shipping season despite high cargo volumes. Uber Freight has launched its Dedicated EV Fleet Accelerator Program in partnership with Tesla. This program aims to overcome major adoption barriers for electric trucks by offering subsidized access to Tesla Semi-trucks, guaranteed freight demand, and direct operational support. We also address recent operational realities, including the temporary outage of critical FMCSA public data, which underscored the absolute importance of timely and accessible information for trucking safety and compliance. Finally, the ongoing liquidation of Yellow Corp. continues to reshape the LTL landscape, with over 200 service centers sold for nearly $2.4 billion, significantly realigning physical assets and market capacity. The Helium Boys are back from the road!  Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return to the remote studio to break down USC finally winning a Big Ten road game outside Los Angeles with Saturday's 33-17 victory over Purdue. It marked USC's first win in the Eastern Time Zone since 2012.  Shotgun spends his 'Two-Minute Drill' discussing the unique rain delay that caused this game to be delayed more than three hours and the vintage drainage system at Ross-Ade Stadium that led to a dry field. Chris uses his time to praise the USC fans that made the trek to West Lafayette and finally got to see a Trojan win on the road after struggles last year.  The podcasting duo then break down the positives and negatives with a hearty "Stock Up/Stock Down" segment, discussing among other things USC's three interceptions and the celebration of the most notable one along with the impact the tight ends are having. The pass rush that produced 31 pressures and a run game that got stronger as the game are also discussed. In the second half of the show, the Helium Boys dive in to a preview of this weekend's late-night matchup with Michigan State (3-0). Michigan State is currently No. 69 in the ESPN Football Power Index with a projected win total of 5.5. They also answer your questions, fielding inquiries about USC's offensive line through the first two games, which commits from 2026 they would add to this team, the secondary and ranking a few Greek mythology movies.  To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Can depression be healed without antidepressants? Josh Trent welcomes Pixie Acia, Spiritual Wellness Coach, to the Wellness + Wisdom Podcast, episode 771, to share how nutraceuticals helped her transition off 15 years of antidepressants, why trauma shows up in our bodies until we face it, and how breathwork, community, and cycle-breaking practices can unlock healing far beyond pharmaceuticals. Nutraceuticals from Altrient (LivOn Labs) In order to repair the structural damage caused by a continual barrage of toxic substances and pathogens, your body requires a constant supply of phospholipids. Whilst humans can synthesise some phospholipid compounds, others are sourced from food. Phospholipids that are obtained from the diet are called ‘essential phospholipids'. The liposomes used in Altrient products are made from essential phospholipids that include a high percentage of Phosphatidylcholine (PC). These liposomes not only provide optimum protection and transport, but they also satisfy the body's need for PC, omega-6 fatty acids, and choline. Now Altrient has taken the power of LET out of the laboratory and put it into your hands. It's why Altrient products are so effective. High-performance nutrients delivering enhanced absorption! Try it for yourself In This Episode, Pixie Acia Uncovers: [01:10] Nutraceuticals: Natural + More Efficient than Anti-Depressants The role of nutraceuticals in treating depression. Why Pixie spent 15 years on depression medications. How liposomal applications help us absorb 80-90% of nutrients from a supplement. Why nutraceuticals provide clarity and allow us to feel our emotions more than antidepressants. How nutraceuticals affect both the brain and the gut. Why depression is a combination of trauma and imbalances in the brain. We can't heal from depression with just one practice. They help not just build the foundational blocks in the brain, but also in the gut, affecting the serotonin and giving you the essential support that it needs to not be depressed." — Pixie Acia "Your nervous system is looking for familiar situations to identify whether it's safe or not. Novelist, essayist, and publishing coach Leigh Stein returns to the show to discuss her new gothic-inspired novel, If You're Seeing This, It's Meant for You. Set in a Los Angeles “hype house,” the book follows a 39-year-old woman managing a mansion full of TikTok influencers—and confronting the realities of aging out of digital media. Leigh talks about the inspirations behind the novel, from a Frank Lloyd Wright house to parasocial relationships to the controversies around Joan Didion's private papers. We also explore bigger questions: the future of Substack, fandom as a cultural force, the blurred line between art and content, and how young writers can navigate the creator economy. Along the way we get into Coldplay-Gate, public shaming as a modern scarlet letter, and what it really means to make a living while making art. About the Guest: Leigh Stein is the author of six books, including the satirical novel Self Care and her latest gothic novel, If You're Seeing This, It's Meant for You. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The New Yorker online, Airmail, Allure, ELLE, BuzzFeed, The Cut, Salon, and Slate.

Famed Chef Jonathan Waxman came to Wine Talks through a mutual friend who we lost last year to cancer; Melvin Masters was a one-of-a-kind character in the wine trade and Jonathans partner in the famed Jams Restaruarant.    On a recent trip to Nashville, Tennessee, I insisted that the group I was with follow me to Roberts Western (most probably the last true country bar in Nashville), for a fried bologna sandwich. They looked at me crosseyed and followed blindly. You see, we had just finished dinner and everyone had overeaten and were tired. But I knew if I didn't go the first night we were there, I wouldn't make it.  Pray tell, why would one do that? Well, if Jonathan Waxman says the first thing he did was take famed Italian Chef Giada De Laurentiis to experience the $5 fried bologna sandwich. Who shouldn't? A slice of flat top freid bologna between two pieces of white bread with a side of Lays potatoe chips, I was in hog heaven. Add a PBR, and you are off to the races. Jonathan Waxman is the kind of chef who can turn a honky tonk fried bologna sandwich in Nashville into high culinary art, then philosophize about the virtues of a perfectly marbled 1961 steak—all before your first glass of Beaujolais is finished. In this episode, you'll discover the inner workings of an acclaimed chef's mind as Jonathan shares the flavors, friendships, and formative experiences that shaped his career. You'll hear about how “wine comes first, food comes second” became his guiding principle, the serendipitous plane rides sourcing lamb and lobster for legendary winery dinners, and the awe-inspiring meals in the kitchens of France that sparked his lifelong passion for simplicity and flavor. Alongside host Paul Kalemkiarian, Jonathan revisits the rollicking days at Michael's and Jams, brushes elbows with food world icons from Alice Waters to Melvin Masters, and reveals the quiet intensity required to survive and thrive in the high-wire environment of fine dining. From the intricacies of nouvelle cuisine to the rainbow of immigrant influences shaping American food culture, you'll gain an insider's appreciation for the nuances of restaurant evolution, the subtle art of pairing local wines with regional dishes, and the uncompromising drive that keeps chefs inventing and adapting—even when the world turns upside down. Whether you're curious how the Michelin Guide still shapes a restaurant's fortunes, or just want to know what it's like to be mentored by legends while flying by the seat of your pants, this episode peels back the layers of taste, tradition, and tenacity, one delicious story at a time. From making vocals feel natural to giving drums the depth of a live room, room verbs can glue your mix together without drowning it in washy tails. We also dive into the shift from long Post Malone–style reverbs to today's drier, punchier sound, the plugins we rely on most (Valhalla Vintage Verb, Valhalla Room, UAD Ocean Way, Cooper Time Cube), and why EQing your reverbs is essential for clarity. Beyond the technical, we talk about the unpredictability of the music industry, why labels can't manufacture guaranteed hits, and why the only real “secret sauce” is loving the music enough to keep creating.Topics covered:Why room reverbs make mixes sound natural and aliveHow to add depth without washing out vocals or instrumentsFavorite reverb plugins for vocals, guitars, and drumsWhy EQing reverbs can make or break a mixThe myth of “secret formulas” in hit songsWhy unpredictability makes the industry more fair than it looksWhether you're chasing a more professional sound or just want your mixes to feel more real, this episode will give you both technical takeaways and perspective on what really matters in music.SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PATREON FOR EXCLUSIVE CONTENT!SUBSCRIBE TO YOUTUBEJoin the ‘Mixing Music Podcast' Discord!HIRE DEE KEIHIRE LUHIRE JAMESFind Dee Kei and Lu on Social Media:Instagram: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLu @JamesParrishMixesTwitter: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLuThe Mixing Music Podcast is sponsored by Izotope, Antares (Auto Tune), Sweetwater, Plugin Boutique, Lauten Audio, Filepass, & CanvaThe Mixing Music Podcast is a video and audio series on the art of music production and post-production. In our mythological retelling of the Civil Rights movement, Martin Luther King, Jr. vanquished the racist apartheid system of Jim Crow in the American South. However, in her groundbreaking new book, historian Jeanne Theoharis argues that King's time in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago—outside Dixie—was at the heart of his campaign for racial justice. As the book description lays out, “King of the North follows King as he crisscrosses the country from the Northeast to the West Coast, challenging school segregation, police brutality, housing segregation, and job discrimination. For these efforts, he was relentlessly attacked by white liberals, the media, and the federal government.” In this episode of The Marc Steiner Show, Marc speaks with Professor Theoharis about the MLK Americans have deliberately forgotten, and what this recovered history tells us about how to fight against injustice today. For full show notes and transcript, click here.Credits: Producer: Rosette SewaliStudio Production: David HebdenAudio Post-Production: Stephen FrankFollow The Marc Steiner Show on Spotify Follow The Marc Steiner Show on Apple PodcastsHelp us continue producing The Marc Steiner Show by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer.Sign up for our newsletterFollow us on:Bluesky: @therealnews.comFacebook: The Real News NetworkTwitter: @TheRealNewsYouTube: @therealnewsInstagram: @therealnewsnetwork

Would our troops be used to quell demonstrations in the United States with force? Seeing crowds in Washington, D.C., during the George Floyd riots in 2020, Trump is reported to have asked "Can't we just shoot them?"  How do we answer the question as to whether the current administration will have U.S. troops fire on the crowds? We will look at the Constitution, especially the 10th Amendment, the Insurrection Act of 1807, and the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878. We will review some history where the military has been used domestically to safeguard civil rights marchers, intervene when requested by governors during violent riots, to stop the Bonus March on Washington in 1932, and to imprison Japanese civilians during World War II. We will also define who is in today's military, where do they come from, how do they line up politically—and would they follow an illegal order and fire on unarmed civilian demonstrators or support a government coup? This is concerning, says Dr. Michael Baker, given the militarization of ICE agents and the deployment of National Guard troops and the Marines to Los Angeles for specious reasons. About the Speaker Dr. Michael Baker recently retired from a 40-year career in general, vascular and trauma surgery. He also served 30 years in the uniform of his country and retired with the rank of Rear Admiral and has numerous kudos, including 3 Legion of Merit Awards, the Combat Action Ribbon, and River and Coastal Patrol Officer-in-Charge warfare pin.
