While the state eases monetary conditions to prop up a fragile system, ordinary citizens are left scrambling to preserve the value of their savings. Bitcoin/CNY trading volumes jumped over 20% in response, as people sought refuge from a weakening yuan. But while some can quietly escape to harder money, others are trapped in a system that treats access to money as a privilege. In Hunan, an elderly woman in a wheelchair died outside a bank after being forced to appear in person to withdraw her own money for medical care. Too weak to pass mandatory facial recognition scans, she collapsed after repeated failed attempts. In Russia, Google complied with government requests to erase YouTube videos opposing the war in Ukraine, while in China, it removed references to the Tiananmen Square massacre and pro-democracy activism. With more than 70% of Russians relying on YouTube for news and China's Great Firewall blocking independent sources, corporate compliance with state censorship enables state propaganda to proliferate as a dominant narrative. The reform follows a $1.4 billion loan agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that wanted to limit the government's, citizens', and economies' exposure to Bitcoin. Salvadoran lawmaker Elisa Rosales said the latest reform guarantees Bitcoin's “permanence as legal tender” while facilitating its “practical implementation.” But, John Dennehy, founder of the civil society organization Mi Primer Bitcoin, explained that the reform removed “all references of bitcoin as money or legal tender, plus the actual conditions, such as the government accepting bitcoin for things such as taxes, are now prohibited.” The future of freedom technology in El Salvador will be worth monitoring closely as the regime continues to erode protections on civil liberties. Bitcoin fucks a chain spy in the park.    In this episode I met up with Brother Rabbit to discus the 1 sat stowaway torch him and samourai are running to help break on-chain heuristics.   Stowaway is a form of peer-to-peer payjoin developed by Samourai Wallet where one party pays another, obscuring the transferred amount, breaking on-chain heuristics, with no server required to be run by the sending or receiving party.   You can send and receive a Stowaway in Samourai Wallet and Sparrow Wallet. For the transaction, both parties participating provide input(s) into the transaction, and both parties receive an output. The transaction can either be carried out manually between the two parties in-person (doing the "QR code shuffle"), or remotely by quickly and automatically exchanging data between the two parties using Soroban; an app agnostic Tor based communications layer developed by Samourai Wallet.   As the name "Stowaway" suggests it works to obscure the amount being sent from one person to another.   By using inputs into the transaction from both parties this breaks the "common-input ownership heuristic" applied by chain analysis firms in an attempt to trace flow of funds. Common-input ownership heuristic; assumption that all inputs to a transaction are owned by the same entity/person.   Stowaway's are not easily detectable on the bitcoin blockchain. The very fact that Stowaways exist on the blockchain adds doubt to all other transactions which have multiple inputs and two outputs (i.e. a simple spend).   How to send/receive a Stowaway in Samourai Wallet   Writen guide: https://docs.samourai.io/wallet/cahoots#stowaway   Tutorial video: https://youtu.be/C8YZI1bY1P4 or https://inv.pistasjis.net/watch?v=C8YZI1bY1P4     Short bitcoin privacy series: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIBmWVGQhizLrPjpFMN5bQdbOZRxCQXUg  or  https://inv.pistasjis.net/playlist?list=PLIBmWVGQhizLrPjpFMN5bQdbOZRxCQXUg     Show Host: Max    https://twitter.com/MaxBitbuybit     Guest  - @BrotherRabbit_   http://paynym.is/+rabbit     Ungovernable Misfits Socials https://www.ungovernablemisfits.com   Twitter  https://twitter.com/ungovernablemf     Show Sponsor - Foundation Devices   Foundation builds Bitcoin-centric tools that empower you to reclaim your digital sovereignty. Own, control and understand bitcoin with sparrow wallet.   In todays episode I spoke to Craig Raw the sole developer and maintainer of Sparrow wallet.Sparrow is a Bitcoin wallet for those who value financial self sovereignty. Sparrow's emphasis is on security, privacy and usability. Sparrow does not hide information from you - on the contrary it attempts to provide as much detail as possible about your transactions and UTXOs, but in a way that is manageable and usable. Craigs hope is that sparrow is as much a tool for education as it is a tool for interacting with the bitcoin network. Ive found this wallet really usable while still having all of the features you would expect from a modern Bitcoin wallet.    Full support for single sig and multisig wallets on common script types A range of connection options: Public servers, Bitcoin Core and private Electrum servers Standards based including full PSBT support Support for all common hardware wallets in USB and airgapped modes Full coin and fee control with comprehensive coin selection Labeling of all transactions, inputs and outputs Lightweight and multi platform Send and receive to PayNyms, both directly (BIP47) and collaboratively Built in Tor Testnet, regtest and signet support   Sparrow is unique in that it contains a fully featured transaction editor that also functions as a blockchain explorer. This feature not only allows editing of all of a transaction's fields, also easy inspection of the transaction bytes before broadcasting.   I asked Craig about some of the features in the new release v1.7.2 and we went into detail on unique visual fingerprints for a wallets now being displayed in the Settings tab and passphrase entry dialog. This makes it easy for more visual people like myself to quickly recognise colours and shapes rather than a string of letters and numbers. We also discussed BIP329 which defines a standard for importing and exporting wallet labels. I was happy to see Craig pushing this forward as its an issue I'm currently experiencing myself and I don't think I'm alone. As other wallets implement this standard, it will become easier to migrate between different wallet implementations using seeds, output descriptors and label exports. It was a pleasure speaking to Craig and I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed recording. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out and ask me. Self custody is personal responsibility - Actionable advice with Antomous I had the pleasure of sitting down with my good friend @antomousB. Antomous is the founder of the Bitcoin self-custody security solutions company Vulcan21.com. He also joins me and QNA for our monthly shows and has been contributing to the open-source space including his work with SeedSigner, SteelQR and SeedMint.  In this conversation we discuss the importance of self-custody to protect yourself against incompetent and/or fraudulent custodians as well as to uphold the core principals of Bitcoin the network and bitcoin the asset. Most of this episode is dedicated to actionable advice regarding holding your own keys. Getting your keys off exchanges is the Zero to One moment which does not require a perfect setup. We then cover a detailed seven-step-plan to guide you through the considerations and tradeoffs when deciding on a security setup. Antomous also recommends running your own node, planning for inheritance, and practicing with Bitcoin testnet. Lastly, we go through the range of high quality, secure and convenient bitcoin seed security products offered by Vulcan21.com. These include the SeedSigner as an air-gapped signing device in combination with the SteelQR backup plates that secure your seed encoded as a QR-code on 316L stainless steel (also compatible with Blockstream Jade). The SteelQRs can be additionally secured in in the SteelVault. Finally, the SeedMint stamping jig is back in stock which you can use to secure your human readable seed on general-purpose stainless-steel washers. Take personal responsibility, one seed at a time. Fun times in Riga and mobile competition for peer-to-peer bitcoin exchanges. Bitcoin Monthly with BQA and Antomous   Bitcoin monthly 0020   In today's episode I spoke to BQA and Antomous about how much fun they had at the Baltic Honeybadger 2022 conference in Riga. BQA gave a talk during the event for bitcoin beginners and Antomous had a booth representing SeedSigner and Vulcan21. It seems it was a pure bitcoiner event with a high signal-to-noise ratio. One of the larger announcements of the conference was the mobile only peer-to-peer bitcoin exchange “peach”. BQA had the chance to test the app and goes into detail on the setup and workflow. Although we love Bisq and Robosats, this is exactly what we have been waiting for. The app is currently still in beta, but we shouldn't have to wait long for the official release. Speaking of Bisq, they released a minor update with a lot of small improvements. We also talked about two major updates from the two big players in lightning: CLN and LND. MyNode is also working hard to close the gap to the marketplace-based platforms in the node implementation competition and Trezor has finally integrated coin control. To wrap up Antomous let us know that the SeedSigner is finally available again at Vulcan21 and that they are putting out a daily Twitter guide series on handling a SeedSigner. As always, I enjoyed speaking to these two and would urge anyone with questions to reach out my DM is always open.   twitter - @MaxBitbuybit twitter - @bitbuybitpod Website - https://ungovernablemisfits.com   Show guest   twitter - @BitcoinQ_A twitter - @antomousB   Special mentions   twitter -@AnitaPosch twitter -@Marketsbylili twitter - @proofofsteph twitter - @dergigi twitter - @hodlhodl twitter - @vulcan21com twitter - @SeedSigner   Links to discussed topics:   Baltic Honeybadger: https://baltichoneybadger.com/ Peach:       https://peachbitcoin.com/ Bisq:       https://github.com/bisq-network/bisq/ BTCPayServer:       https://github.com/btcpayserver/btcpayserver CLN:       https://github.com/ElementsProject/lightning/ LND:       https://github.com/lightningnetwork/lnd/ MyNode: https://github.com/mynodebtc/mynode/ Foundation Devices: https://github.com/Foundation-Devices/passport-firmware/ Phoenix: https://github.com/ACINQ/phoenix/ Sparrow Wallet: https://github.com/sparrowwallet/sparrow/ Trezor: https://github.com/trezor/trezor-suite/ Zeus: https://github.com/ZeusLN/zeus/ Machankura: https://8333.mobi/ Vulcan21: https://vulcan21.com/     As always please feel free to reach out and ask me any questions. Craig Raw lives in the real world. Instead of going to bed each night thinking about whether he left a spoon in the fork drawer like many in the terminally fragile West might do nowadays, Craig thinks about how well he, his friends and his neighbours have protected themselves and their Bitcoin stashes from a violent break-in the next time it happens. If you're never been to Craig's homeland of South Africa, it is not for the fainthearted. Don't get me wrong – it is a stunningly beautiful country, home to amazing wildlife, wine and people. But it's edgy and, well, raw.   "I saw Sparrow as a tool to be able save with Bitcoin and do so in a way that allows you to really understand the protocol and the details of what was going on. That was the genesis of it – to create a tool that is going to be easy to use but at the same time give bitcoiners the detail that I think that they need in order to get into it and to really do the job well." We're back to talking design on bitcoin. I had to take a break because of some health issues but the design space in bitcoin is evolving so fast this year that we just had to come back to work. For the forth episode, we had the pleasure to talk to Craig Raw from Sparrow wallet, one of my favorite projects in bitcoin. Great for beginners to learn more about the protocol, and amazingly useful for more advanced bitcoin users that want full visibility when it comes to UTXO control. We talked about the origins of the Sparrow Wallet project, contributions, priorities, how much information to reveal to the user, privacy practices and a lot more. Enjoy it!
